He's fun and knows a lot, but he's kind of intense and grades hard. You learn a lot though!
Excellent professor. He is very funny and entertaining. He is a good model for how college professors should be. You will have to work hard to earn an 'A' but its well worth it.
One of the best Prof's at CSULB. He is a very nice guy, funny, knowledgeable and approachable. The class is not easy; tests are tough and there are several interview assignments etc. but you will enjoy coming to class as he makes the material easy to relate to and interactive. Would highly recommend taking his classes to anyone and everyone!
By far the best professor you'll ever have at cal state long beach! He makes learning the material extremely entertaining, if you are having trouble in class he is willing to help! The tests are by the book and his lectures. They're difficult but if u study u'll pass! Take him!
Classes are extremely interesting and relevant.
Dr. Bolkan is a very intelligent professor that will teach you about things that are relevant to real life and relationships. Creates an understanding for things you never knew. Not an easy class but very interesting and you will walk out a smarter person.
Bolkan is an awesome professor!! Best professor on campus. Engages his students every class session. His teachings methods are so effective it's impossible not to do well. Take him!!
TAKE HIM! seriously, he is intelligent, hilarious, and makes the class incredibly interesting. tests are pretty darn hard, but if you do ALL of the reading (reading is mandatory) and pay attention to his lectures then you'll be fine. awesome awesome professor
best professor ever! it's an interesting subject and he makes this class so fun! tests aren't nearly as hard as his 306 class, he does offer some extra credit. You could do ok in this class without the textbook, but if you want an A i'd recommend reading it. highly recommend Bolkan- he's so freaking funny!
COMM 410 was by FAR my favorite class this semester! It gave me the challenge I needed in order to retain the information. San was HILARIOUS and VERY INTERESTING!I ALWAYS told my friends TAKE BOLKAN!I thought the test were challenging, but that was my fault.I suggest you get in study groups! Also, apart from the fun learning, his attire was fly!
He is really funny, really good looking, and has good style...which makes it really hard to focus on anything else!
After looking through his ratings, I got excited about taking this class for summer session... and sure enough, the ratings are all true! Bolkan is charismatic, enthusiastic & humorous! Even though the class is 4 hrs long (well, it's supposed to be, but he let's us out an hr earlier b/c he's awesome:) I can't fall asleep in class. Highly recommend!
Take him. You won't regret it.
Excellent professor. Relates everything to real life so it's very easy to remember things during exams. Gives extra credit if you buy his book! Definitely recommend taking him for any class!
BEST PROFESSOR EVER. Best class ever. He lectures thru example, provides study guides, he is funny and personable . Truly the best class I have ever taken .
He is hands down the best prof ever! He is also so hot and strong! Take this class and you will not regret it!
Bolkan is THAT professor that you hope to take again in the future! He lectures through real-life examples, which makes it easy to comprehend all the material. His class is challenging, but worth it! If you do the average, you'll receive the average grade... so TRY HARD! And ladies, he is ridiculously hot! You'll be motivated to go to class!
Amazing professor, he lectures in a way that is entertaining and allows you to relate through real life examples. His ego is huge, which sometimes gets annoying. But truly my favorite professor ever.
Prof. Bolkan is a great professor to have for Public Speaking. He has a lot of experience and he is very clear presenting that information to his class. His class is organized very well and allows for students to be productive. His class isn't the easiest Public Speaking class, but you will learn a lot. I highly recommend it if you like to learn.
This might have been the only Communications class that I enjoyed and learned from at the same time. The class was enjoyable and while it isn't the easiest, he does push you to learn.
San is hands down the best professor I've ever had. His class was extremely difficult but he made it worth learning all the material. He is hilarious and hott... I definitely recommend him for any COMM class, you can't go wrong.
Bolkan is hands down one of the best professors I've every taken. He knows the material very well and he uses alot of funny stories to explain it in his lectures. His classes are fun but this is not an easy class, its a 400 level class learn how to study.
Prof. Bolkan is by far the best teacher I have had in my 3 years of college. His classes are always fun and there is never a dull moment. He is always there to help you and guide you on the road to success. It also helps that he is very easy on the eyes! If you are looking for a great class with a strong and handsome professor take this class!!!
Took it over may intersession and learned so much in 3 weeks. He is not hard, but he is also not easy. If you want an A, then you must work for it like any other college class. Read the book because the final exam was online and was still difficult. Overall great class where you can learn interested tactics that will benefit you in the long run.
Took this class during winter, really great professor! Very clear and helpful, but you must work to earn you grade. Book is cheap! San presents info in a way that you are so focused through lecture! Work hard and you will get an A :)
One of the greatest teachers you will ever have, I promise. No words can describe how amazing he is as a teacher. I've taken both of the classes he teachers and I'm bummed he doesn't teach any other ones for me to take. He's amazing. In order to understand, you have to take his class. It's better experienced than explained.
Bolkan is hands down the best professor at CSULB. He is an awesome guy who is willing to do whatever he can to make sure his students learn the material, and he has the best stories and examples for every concept to make them easier to remember. His courses can be a bit tough, but the work load is fair.
He puts the "Pro" in professor. Enough said.
I graduated in December & had never taken a class with San before. I took him my last semester & realize I really missed out all those previous semesters. Of all my professors he was my absolute favorite! Definitely not easy; but, I learned more, & retained more, than any other class. His was so enjoyable, so much fun to learn & fun to laugh.
Dr. Bolkan is the best. Hilarious throughout every lecture. Learn a lot about his Turkish ancestry. Genuinely cares about his students. Did I mention he is hilarious?
He's awesome! Took this class during winter session. Very easy and under stable. Every class was interesting! Plus he's hot:)
Mr. Bolkan is by far a great professors hes the example of what most should be. Through his use of personal examples and negotiation exercises, jeopardy reviews, I would highly recommend taking him in your college career. Three test including final, negotiation exercises, 3 papers @ two pages each. Thanks Bolkan for great semester!
Dr. Bolkan is impossible *NOT* to like. His lectures are well-prepared and laugh-out-loud funny. Folks laugh during his tests too. Material is presented in an easy to learn, easy to understand, easy to remember manner. Assignments are relevant and not too long. Tests are fair. Dr. Bolkan is also very, very strong. Remember that, now.
I freaking love this guy. He made class fun and enjoyable and i am going to florence with him in May now. Don't pass up the chance to take his class!
He's by far the best professor I've had at CSULB. Very clear with what he wants, and really wants you to succeed and do well. Take him. You won't regret it.
One of the best professors in the Communication Studies department! He made class fly by with his hilarious lectures and as long as you do the assigned reading and study, the tests are fair. Beware: there is a group paper! Get a good group, START THE PAPER EARLY, and go to office hours in order to get your paper reviewed before submitting it.
Took the Hybrid 306. Homework every week but if you do it, it will really pad your grade. One group paper and 3 exams. Exams are funny and questions are scenario based so you have to actually understand the terms. Best lectures ever. He is the best!!! Take him if you can!!!!
Hilarious, insightful, helpful, straight-forward, and fair. Three exams (don't miss review days), online hw assignments, and one major paper. Would've definitely preferred the paper to be individual instead of 5-6 group. Kind of hard to go to office hours for help on such an important paper when half of your group decides to start the night before.
Very funny guy, with entertaining lectures. Class only consists of 170 pts(200 w/ OPTIONAL paper), so there is not a lot of room for error. You NEED to read to do well. Attendance worth 20 pts. 3 exams @ 50 pts each. 1st exam is the easiest, DON'T blow off 2nd exam, it hurt a lot of students who thought it wouldn't be difficult. Some EC available.
Class is pretty entertaining and you have to make sure to be there to get the information, but that's not hard since he's pretty good looking :p His personality makes the class entertaining and also he makes you work for it. Overall I suggest you take this class!
Okay great professor!!!! lectures are interesting he makes it fun. If you not take notes and listen and STUDY then you won't pass. a lot of things you need to know and memorize for test but if you study and know everything you're good!!!! PAY ATTENTION TO ALL HIS EXAMPLES AND STORIES ATHEY WILL POP UP ON TEST AND THE PICTURES HE SHOWS
Amazing Professor, and you always want to attend his amazing lectures. Class is test heavy and they are really difficult. He's a great person and professor. You'll enjoy class but be aware of difficult test.
Took him winter 2017. He is a very caring professor, hilarious and also Hot . Do yourself a favor and take him. He is the best!
Lecture was always entertaining, always laughed and learned. Straight forward grading 3 Exams, 50 points each, no wiggle room at all. Offers some extra credit. If you bomb one, grade in class will most likely be a B or C depending on how you do on the other Exams. Either way, the experience is worth it
I know this sounds crazy, but I watched an entire movie the other day thinking the whole time that it was a biography about Dr. Bolkan. It was only at the very end that I realized the movie was about someone else. The movie? Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. This professor is that awesome.
Teaching style you feel as though you are being trained to take over the world. A planet where you use communication to win the hearts, admiration, and beliefs of an ethical nation. No professor is more clear. In fact, Dr. Bolkan talks about clarity and his research on it - he exemplifies organization and clarity. Bumper sticker, Bolkan 2020!
Buyer beware, best brofessor bar none. Bodies better believe that Bolkan is the best at the Beach. Believes in bettering students, never boring always beguiling, brandishes bold boombox of a voice. His class is like a banquet, or boquet, better - a bonanza of booming academic butterflies. Even bad students are bewildered by his betterment.
Love this professor: clear, caring, understanding. Classes were always fun and he pushed you to learn a lot and do your best. Highly recommend.
B O L K A N - a teacher who taught a class I signed up for randomly. B O L K A N - my life is now changed. Take his class, otherwise your college experience will be incomplete.
Dr. Bolkan is an elite professor. His lectures are organized and he is always passionate about the material. He backs everything he teaches with current research. I highly recommend visiting him during office hours because he is super caring and insightful. He publishes a lot of research and is really raising the bar. Definitely a role model.
You learn you laugh. Dr. Bolkan works cats, birds, and monkeys into many of his lectures. You learn about all kinds of things related to real life and how to improve both academically and socially. He expects the most out of students and himself. If there was a professor hall of fame he would be inducted.
great professor who is smart. gives small extra credit. no homework. must go to class since he will use information from lecture on his exams. he likes assigning cumulative exams so be careful. make sure your lecture notes are written really well since he does not upload much information onto beachboard. no textbook, but assigned readings on bb
Bolkan made me laugh the first day and the last day. Sometimes I laughed in between. I cried after I came to the realization that I almost got through college and almost missed having him as a professor. The tears were those of rejoice.
Please take him during WINTER if you want easy A & still able to enjoy the break. (not fall/spring!) Winter 3-week hybrid class includes: 1 page reading reflective/week, 1 reading pop-quiz, 1 30-sec elevator speech, fun in-class activities, 1-hour online final 40 questions (from readings and notes from class). met only 4 times for a whole course!!
There are only three words to describe this professor: AMAZING
Attendance isn't mandatory but if you want to pass you have to go to class and take good notes. He won't post the lectures online, so make sure to write down everything he says. only graded n 3 test, if he offers extra credit do it.
San Bolkan is the best prof I've ever had ! His classes are hilarious, you spend such a great time having his lectures you'll never be late or look at the clock. Every point he makes is supported by a story, which makes the learning process so much easier. If you have the opportunity to take San's class, whatever he's teaching : Go for it !
Professor B gives amazing feedback with all the assignments that were turned in. His quizzes are okay, the first two were a little difficult so make sure you understand the reading before taking the quizzes. Depending on how well you do on those quizzes will basically determine your grade so make sure you study before taking it.
The class textbook was just two paperback books about negotiation. Every week there is a one-page paper answering questions about the readings or the exercises that you will do. There are 3 exams total which are difficult, definitely study! Professor Bolkan is super chill, and funny. We only met on Zoom about 1-2x times a month.
Took San Bolkan for a 2 week winter session. Class consisted of only 2 exams (100 points total for class) and he offered extra credit. Tests are lockdown browser with camera so be sure to study!! Overall, you do become a better negotiator but you have to study hard to get an A.
This professor is so cool. His class is lecture-heavy for sure, but he is so interesting the time flies. The class is graded by test only, and he uses lockdown browser and webcam for the exams. So attend class, read the text, and take good notes. You truly learn to negotiate in this class.
2 EXAMS+ CUMULATIVE FINAL. 1-2 PAPERS (depends). 1 opportunity for extra credit. The class is not worth many points which can quickly bring down your grade if you don't do well on exams... about 8 nego. activities worth 1 pt each. Exams w/ lockdown browser & webcam. Book inexpensive but required to read to pass exams. Posts articles to read on exam
Great class. Clear teaching style and engaging material. If you want to learn and you are ready to work hard then you can do well in this class. You will leave the course a better negotiator that's for sure.
Prof. Bolkan specializes in effective teaching practices and it shows. I had to work for my grade because his exams are tough but he makes things clear and cares about his students. Take him if you have the chance. One of the best professors I have ever had.
Professor Bolkan is an awesome and passionate teacher. I took his summer course and while it was not easy due to the amount of reading, it was interesting and I learned a lot. You definitely have to read and watch lectures to ace the exams. It is not a hard class to pass if you put in the work. I highly recommend!
One of my favorite teachers so far. 6 easy one page papers, 3 exams, one group project at the end of the semester. He offers 3 EC activities. He wrote his own textbook so you kinda have to buy it, but it is just as important as the lectures. We would have study session before each exam. He grades everything within 24 hrs. Take Bolkan! He is great.
Attend class, study for the quizzes by reading the chapters along with his lectures and you'll pass. He is an interesting professor and gives positive feedback.
Dr. Bolkan is one of the best professors in the Communication Department. I took COMM 421 during Winter 2023. It was a 3-week class, and I still remember a lot of things from his book that I am always applying while negotiating with people around me. I strongly recommend this class with him!
Bolkan was an amazing professor. Lectures were amazing and will stick with me forever. Weekly assignments were manageable. Tests were very application based so be prepared. My one problem was that the final project appeared to be fairly simple, but came back with points being taken off on things that were unexpectedly graded.
Took this class during winter and it was very challenging. 3 week course which included 3 exams and 3 one page single spaced papers. The tests were based off 3 (long) chapters and 2 lecture videos, the final exam covers 4 chapters and 2 videos. The study guides were available since the start of class but the tests were just applying knowledge.
bolkan's class is HARD. the content for 306 is dense + he expects you to learn it all on your own. barely has expectations for the (8) papers, no rubric, + still docks tons of points if you don't do it exactly the way he wants. 14 5-point quizzes, some w/ 1 point ec but it's not enough. doesn't let you retake anything, unforgiving + unempathetic.
Bolkan's class is definitely challenging, but it is not "hard" if you do the work and actually put in the effort to learn. This course is online and it is asynchronous, so the appropriate expectation is that students need to have the self-discipline to learn on their own. He provides guidelines for grading and give good feedback for improvement.
Asynchronous online course. If you struggle w/time management, this probably isn't the course for you. If you can put aside 1.5 hours a week, you will pass. One quiz and one assignment per week. You only need to complete 8 of the 14 assignments given weekly along with every quiz. Perfect for someone working while in school or in a routine schedule.
I learned more in Dr. Bolkan's class than any other class I have taken. He wrote the textbook and it is excellent. You have to read the chapters and take notes to succeed on the quizzes. The midterm was graded harshly, but he gave great feedback on how to succeed on the final. The exercises are fun and engaging. I would take a course of his again.
If it wasn't for me slacking off, I would've easily gotten an A. He has his own book that you have to buy and read for quizzes. Other than quizzes, you do mock negotiations, and write reflection papers about how it went and what you could improve on. Each quiz has one extra credit question at the end. Don't be late! If looking for UD, take ASAP!!!
Great professor. Knows his stuff and is excited about teaching. The book is straightforward and easy to read. You get what you put in - if you do the bare minimum you won't do well because Bolkan has high standards. But if you work hard and put in the time you will become a better negotiator. I highly recommend this professor and this class.
This professor is knowledgeable and willing to help. Classes are well-structured and the workload is not overwhelming like it can be in other classes. Fair grader and always available to help after class. Interesting lectures. Negotiation is critical subject matter for any student, this class is super helpful for developing real life skills.
Professor Bolkan has high standards that push students to work hard and I learned a ton as a result. You definitely have to put in the effort, but you'll be rewarded with life long skills if you do. Very organized and straightforward course with a textbook that is easy to read. I highly recommend Professor Bolkan and tell others to take this class!
25 pages of light reading a week. Grades are based on 10 quizzes(5pts) & negotiation exercises(5pts). Each quiz has 1 point E/C and ask you to apply what you learned. If you follow directions you get 5/5 on exercises. As a 400-level class, expectations were quite minimal. Very manageable workload, pretty easy to do well if you put in basic effort.
He's not terrible but he's not great either. He likes to pretend he's not as grouchy as he is but he's always kinda grouchy. Super harsh grader, no flexibility. He won't write out all the directions to assignments but he'll tell it to you in class so def don't miss classes or you're going to do assignments wrong.
Great professor. Organized and cares about students actually learning instead of just memorizing facts for a test. Material is interesting and as long as you show up, pay attention, and try then the class is pretty straightforward. Some classmates were upset that the prof held them responsible if they skipped class or skipped assignments/tests.
My favorite professor in the Comm department. I have taken multiple classes with him. Clear grading criteria - 10 quizzes and 5 one-page written assignments about negotiations you do in class. NO EXAMS. He offers 1 point of extra credit with each quiz. Must read a chapter weekly but they are short. His class lectures are enjoyable. Take him!!
Prof. Bolkan's course required a lot of reading, proctored quizzes, and two-page written assignments every week with no flexibility on deadlines and has no empathy. Be careful using spell-check tools otherwise you will be accused of using AI, resulting in no credit for your work. He is paranoid about students using AI on assignments/quizzes.
Online class. Readings are interesting & applicable to life. Easy assignments - apply concepts to personal experience. Late assignments receive 1/2 credit. If you use Chatgpt to write papers you will be held accountable (duh). Quizzes every week, extra credit available on each. Bolkan is accessible outside of class and always helpful. Great class!
Dr. San is professional, fair, kind, and truly cares about his students. His lectures are clear, engaging, and based on his own excellent book, fun, personal, and easy to understand. I learned real-life negotiation skills and enjoyed every part of the class. I highly recommend him!
