Hes wonderful to be around. He teaches in a way that lets students be creative and encourages positivity.
He is a very nice person, and has very flexible office hours, but he is not the best teacher. He skips steps often when explaining things, and he'll assume the class knows more than what he's taught. His tests are very difficult, and much more complicated than the homework. Expect lots of teaching (hours, daily) on your own time.
He uses a lot different ways to help kids succeed, and a lot of ways to help boost grades. During class he goes over both concepts and examples, and is super willing to answer any and all questions. As long as you are paying attention in class and do your homework, this class is really interesting and fun.
Sandi's heart is in the right place, but his method of teaching is extremely ineffective for the majority of people. The biggest issue being that he doesn't go through problems to show us how it is done almost ever. As a result, the notes become a jumbled mess of uncertainty. You end up teaching yourself the whole course due to a lack of teaching.
He tends to teach unnesscary information constantly throughout the quarter making things very difficult. Also he likes to include a lot of trick questions in his tests which are actually worth a huge portion of the exam and really annoying to me. Also he is one of the few math teachers I have had that makes you create multiple writing papers.
He's kind and ready to help at any time. However, his assignments are lengthy and unnecessary. We have had five essays and short responses due, each on interesting, but unrelated, long videos or articles. His lectures get confusing and it's seems he expects us to know most of the content already. I have to spend hours each night teaching myself.
Sandi is a very confusing professor, he even confuses himself. He makes silly mistakes and doesn't catch them, so he confuses the class. He is very focused on the conceptual part of calculus, but is not very clear on explaining anything. His test almost always have mistakes in them. I learned most of the content from the online homework.
I really don't understand all the negative reviews about Sandi, because he's such a caring professor and if you go to his office hours he's willing to help you. However, there's a lot of homework, his lectures were kinda confusing, and he gives out random unrelated essays. Just do the hw and you'll be fine and the BOOK is VERY helpful.
Sandi cares for his students and always tries to help them outside of class, but during class his teaching methods aren't the best. He just stays at the front of the class and attempts to explain the content, but he doesn't do a very good job. He never gives examples on a problem and either spends too long on a problem or too short.
First of all, he is a very caring instructor. No one wants you to succeed as much he does, not even yourself. His tests are hard with conceptual questions that makes your brain rip out. Homework everyday. 6 tests and 1 final. The final is take-home, the only actual "test" I got an A. His extra credit gave me a final grade of A with 93.1%
Sandi is one of most caring profs I have ever met. He really truly wants u to succeed. Where he goes wrong is, he often explains things conceptually and doesn't integrate examples into his lesson till the end, so u end up confused sometimes. Tests r similar to review. They r 3 essays, which are super easy and boost ur grade. HW online, free book.
If you are someone who wants to solve a few practices problems before exam, do the review, miss lectures, and just hope the homework boosts your score, don't take Sandi. But wait, if you want to LEARN HOW TO THINK like Mathematicians do and really learn the concepts of Calc 1, especially if you are going to take Sandi, then take him.
Not for someone looking for an easy A, gotta work for it. If you're a math major or genuinely interested you'll enjoy the class as much as I did. Challenges are named that way for a reason, gotta really work the brain muscle and think big. Formulas and how they work are explained and if you pay attention it will all make sense right away.
His class was very interesting. He uses a different teaching style than most teachers which is much more interactive and interesting to me. His class was not really easy, but it felt more like we learned the material rather than memorized it. Very good prof, there were times when... dare I say... I had fun in a calculus class.
It was his first year teaching calc, and it showed. He speaks quickly and skips steps in the process so you have to struggle to keep up. I spent hours in the math lab everyday for homework and assignments, and it was still very difficult. I was lost in class pretty much everyday. He had us write text posts about ourselves and respond to others'.
Sandi wants you to succeed and will always offer extra help, if you ask for it. He is very kind and you can tell he really enjoys math. The homework and daily work definitely didn't prepare me for the 5 tests that we had. Don't take this class if you don't want to work. Also - the final isn't take home anymore :(
He will give you group discussion paper everyday to do group work. Learning through the discussion, but these wont come out much on the test. The test will be 2 pages long and you wont have enough time to finish it because the questions so different with what we learned. Good luck if you take this class
i started this class planning to become a math major. i left this class hating math. i haven't taken a math class since this one. if you think you like math or that you're good at math, this class with him could change that very quickly.
I can tell he loves math and truly cares about his students. I struggled with this class. I don't think his teaching style is very helpful for me. Its a lot of group work and I have severe social anxiety. His lectures are good but take his class for the tests. Sandi writes the best tests I have ever took I learn more taking the test than In class.
I can bet you that Sandi will be different from any math teacher you've had, in a good way. His teaching method is unique, and makes math engaging and interesting. His tests, "challenges", are challenging and will push you to think outside the box. He offers many extra credit opportunities an 'A' is totally manageable. Would take again.
he is the worst professor i have ever had. he grades extremely harshly, there is no partial credit, and he refuses to teach the material. everything is self-taught and he uses the textbook that another professor wrote, it's super confusing and poorly written. there's weekly discussions (for a math class?) stay away from his class
In general, this professor is a nice person, but not a good teacher. During the pandemic, everyone is facing the challenge due to the lack of resources. We try to give this professor some advice, but he refused to listen to any of them. The grading system is exceptionally harsh. In general, I only recommend this professor to math major students.
this class was maybe the most brutal "math" experience I've ever had. there was no real teaching involved, just textbook pages and youtube videos, and then the "challenges", which are like quizzes except there isn't any partial credit, which are 50% of your grade. if this class is your only option, wait a quarter to take calculus 3
Study early on and consistently or be prepared for a stressful quarter. Tests are all or nothing score wise which is good&bad. There are multiple chances to earn back points on tests which is really nice. Sandi is a great guy, get to know him and go to office hours for help. Ask questions he will help. Do the extra credit!
He is genuinely a very sweet and nice guy. The course itself is very challenging and his pronunciation might give you some challenging time, but I've learned a lot from him. I still don't get how I got A- doing terrible on his tests and quizzes. He likes students who are trying hard and ask lots of questions so visit his office hours!
This was the most awful class structure I've ever had in my entire time at BC, especially during online. Theres annotation/participation in a math class, WEEKLY difficult tests called "challenges", and no partial credit. Not to mention it's basically entirely self-taught even with class. There were kids with 0s in the class for the first 5 weeks.
I hate to do this because prof seems like a genuine guy, but the first half of this class was incredibly hard. The curriculum and resources to learn were super confusing bc it's spread across like 3 platforms. Classes are basically just group work which don't really teach you much. He asked for feedback though and is working to improve the class.
Sandi is a super nice professor. his curriculum certainly takes an adjustment period since it is very different from a traditional class, but it really helps you learn and he is always taking feedback from students to improve his class. make sure to be very communicative in this class with prof and your peers, as it is the best way to succeed.
Once in a lifetime human. First A I've ever gotten in a math class. Sandi uses a more modern curriculum structure called Mastery Learning (search "mastery based learning explained" on youtube). In short, made Calc actually make sense, even for someone AWFUL at math and w/ ADHD. I actually care for/understand math now. Sandi is simply amazing.
The class is structured in a way where the professor refuses to teach and expects the students to understand the questions that weren't in the homework or textbook. Do not take this class if you are expecting the instructor to do anything to help you learn course content. Most stressful quarter of my life and worst math class I've ever taken. AVOID
After taking both Calculus 2 and 3 from Sandi, I can confidently call him one of my greatest inspirations. He is passionate about his subject and uses innovative methods to help student really learn the material, instead of just memorizing it. The grading system works with the student; effort in, grades out. As long as you try, you'll love Sandi.
Math 153, is a tough course. If you actually want to learn math you take this Professor, not only do you learn Calculus 3 you learn the gaps you have accrued in math from all your past courses and you can begin to find them and fix them. If you just want a passing grade because you are not serious about math, take someone else, you wont pass.
His tests are all or nothing and they are unbelievably more complicated than the homework. The homework itself also doesn't align with the material so there is no other way to get it done in time except to study two chapters ahead every week! The prof. seems to genuinely love math but he can't explain concepts at all and his textbook is terrible!
He's an awesome guy! Very funny and fun person to be around. I struggled in his classes sometimes, but he was always nice about it. He's a great person and a great professor. I recommend you take him!
Alternative and forgiving grading system. Great teacher, always willing to discuss math topics in discussions and optional class meeting times. You have to pay attention and apply the knowledge you learn; the questions on the test require more original thinking than the homework.
An analogy for this class would be if in high school you had the choice of taking regular calc or AP calc; Sandi's class would be the AP calc version. The course truly makes sure you understand the material in depth with its tough tests. His class structure is unique and it takes a long time to get used to it, paired with its egregious syllabus.
Sandi is a really sweet guy, he just loves math so much! ex of how your week would look like: watch videos and annotate them, attend stdnt hour do homework, post questions on your weekly group write an essay about math, annotate each ch,&by the end of the week you gotta list everything you did and send it to him. quiz is open book but is SO hard.
Professor Xhumari is a great and cared professor. His grading system is different, but it will lessen your stress about the tests. However, the test is difficult, and you need to practice with the resources he gives outside of homework to do well.
very confusing grading system and syllabus, but once you figure it out things go pretty smoothly. participation is a pretty big part of the class, but it was essentially self-graded with really easy tasks to get points. tests were around once every two weeks, with group tests as well; but tests are essentially open-note and retake-able
I'm usually not inclined to leave reviews for professors, but Prof. Xhumari inspired and brought out a love of math that no previous math course or professor has. His grading scale is tricky to figure out, but his criteria are forgiving and fair. Highly recommend taking this course, he's an infectious teacher and a great professor.
I can't believe those who gave Sandi a low score! He is def the BEST! His way is so cool that you can choose whatever learning method suits you the most. For every core concept of the course, you have multiple entries to make it perfect. He gave feedback whenever you need it and is absolutely one of the most caring professors! Sandi is worth 5.0!
The first weeks with Sandi are rough as you decode his syllabus and alternative course structure. Once I did, it was smooth sailing, and I learned more in his class than any math class before. He gives you readings, videos, and exercises to learn each concept, and you can choose what works best for you.
It is a math system that's different from any other. Some love it, some hate it. If you plan to take him, don't take him online, also don't slack off either. Be ready to work for your grade. The online class has a lot of participation and the testing system is relatively difficult. Just plan to work harder than needed and decode the system.
BCs most caring professor. Sandi creates a class where you get out what you put in. The grading may seem confusing because its new but if you put in the effort to learn it, its actually straightforward and rewards you for trying to learn. Everything was open book but the questions were tough. If you care about your learning, take Sandis class
His Pass-Fail tests become too difficult and unpredicting! $150/hr MATH Tutors turning down students who send samples and Problems! saying "they arnt able to help or even be helpFUL!!" the classes Entirely unfair grading is dependent on who Is in your small groups! Testing-People helping each-other obviously cheating causing Convoluted results!
Mr. Xhumari is a super nice and dedicated teacher. I liked the test structure. I saw many other comments saying the tests were all or nothing. That's true. However, you have MULTIPLE attempts. He even lets you make revisions if you make minor mistakes. I highly recommend asking Sandi for help as he explains topics really well.
His grading is as follows:25% on homework, individual tests, group tests, and participation, each. Except those tests are 100 or 0 and you have to beg him for feedback if you got 0, also the hw is really easy and not comparable in difficulty to his tests/challenges, office hours are 5hrs after actual class and makes no effort if youre busy.
Awful grading system. The exams, which he calls challenges, are very difficult and all or nothing, and they do not reflect what you practiced on the homework. When math doesn't come easy to us, we work very hard to get B's and C's, and when you see zero in the grade of the challenges it is -very- discouraging.
Nice guy always willing to answer questions. But his class is super difficult to pass. There are 4 exams graded 1 or 0. Everything correct=1 but if you made mistakes you get 0. He gives you 4 attempts for each test, but this doesn't make things easier because the tests are so hard. Homework doesn't train you for the problems on the exams.
His tests are only 1 or 2 questions, they'll blow you out because they are nothing like what you learn by putting hours and hours on completing the homework exercises and understanding them. You'll have a few chances for each challenge but all of them are made up with difficult questions that no youtube video will help you understand or solve.
Sandi's grading is tough to decode at first- then when you understand you have 4 chances to pass every test you'll be like yes! this is going to be awesome! - but then you see the test problems and how crazy difficult they are because you havent seen anything like them before, not in homework not in online practice sites...the rest is history
Sandi cares about his students and the material. There are 4 challenges with 4 attempts each, all or nothing. He sometimes allows for corrections. The tests are meant to be easy if you know the material but hard if you don't because he wants you to really learn. The alternative grading system is hard to understand but is lenient overall.
He did give lots of attempts on challenges, but each attempt are quite different from the last time. It makes me hard to understand what mistakes I did. I just hope he would try to give partial credits for the questions rather than a 1 or 0.
No partial credit for challenges, not enough time to finish them either. If he were to allow us 6 hours for the challenges, we would use every minute of those 6 hours to dead study the material he wants us to. We simply can not be expected to study such vast ranges of concepts and types of problems.
He did not teach the students and only give all assignments through chats. I took this class because it was the only online class during the quarter and I noticed there was two meetings per week which was supposed to be a lecture meeting. But instead, he used it to do quizzes (in his way of teaching called Challenges). really don't recommend him
does not teach students anything. This is a SELF-TAUGHT class! all challenges are different from homework and it's worth for 50% of total grade. He uses the lecture hours for quizzes. really don't recommend anyone taking him because it's not worth your money and time!!!
The grading is very strange. Your grade is dependent on Challenges that replace test and quizzes. They are doable but extremely tough. There are other things in the course (like loads of hw) but they don't really count. The grade you see on Canvas isn't your actual grade too. There are no lectures at all so it's all self taught. I don't recommend.
At no point during the course will student priority be to study calculus concepts. Grading only depends on weekly challenge problems that are difficult, fair. However, Xhumari knows what we expect on each challenge, so he will assign problems on the challenges that he knows we have not prepared for. We have a study guide, it's the entire textbook.
Sandi is a very responsible professor who always tries his best to make his students learn more, which means that his workload will increase as well. He is very passionate about teaching. It was a little confusing at the beginning of the quarter, but it will get better later. I have to say I have learned a lot more in his class.
A huge work load for this class that will be unrelated to what the test questions will cover, so you will work a lot and hard to comply with all his assignments and to understand the material, but you will still fail because the test questions you have not ever practiced before.
Sandi is a very nice person but his way of managing the math class is awful. Lots of work for the class. He uses class time to do his challenges (tests) not to explain concepts, every week you have to take the challenges because even though you have 4 attempts, the tests are so difficult that is your only chance to maybe pass.
Just don't take his class unless you want to through away money and don't care about your grade. It is overly complicated by his system in place. You will not see him teach any lessons, just youtube videos of other professors that barely covers the material on test. Be prepared to spend 5-8 hours a day trying to figure out his system and material.
This professor is not even "ok." He is self righteous with an agenda that doesn't consist of fair grading. Because its blatant that his grading system is random letter assignment he pulls out of a hat, it is MIND BLOWING that he is employed at any college. Final grade has NOTHING to do with performance, instead its decided on a subjective whim.
The class is asynchronous but there are required group meetings and weekly "challenges". What is covered in Homework and example is vastly different than the so called challenges. The challenges have a multiple attempts but the topics each attempt are completely different and get significantly harder the more you fail. Take if you have urself.
I'd really suggest steering clear of Professor Xhumari for MATH152. In comparison to what I learned in MATH151, I basically learned nothing from Xhumari's calc 2 class. He essentially works against you via his unorthodox grading system, and he did not provide actual resources to help you prepare for his tests, which he referred to as "challenges."
These reviews of prof xhumari, are a little exaggerated. Yes his tests are all or nothing, and loads of hw. But they aren't outrageously difficult. He does not have lectures, but his office hours are very helpful. Hes kind, fair, & really puts a lot of effort into his class. This class is manageable, but take a light load with him.
YOU WILL BE OVERWHELMED BY THE SYLLABUS, BUT DON'T QUIT. It's a strange setup, but you get used to it after the first few weeks. The main thing you gotta worry about are the challenges, but they're not impossible if you actually pay attention to the hw. Definitely make a class group chat and go to office hours. The workload is pretty heavy.
I really dont get why people dont like Sandi. He is literally one of the best math teachers in BC. He has a unique grading style that reduces stress a lot by having 4 opportunities to retake any of the quizzes. He also gives all the quiz questions and answers from 4 previous quarters. Amazing teacher who is very passionate about math!
The syllabus and class layout are confusing but once you get the hang of it the class is not as hard as it seems. Your grade is based off quizzes, group quizzes, homework, and participation points. The workload is manageable. Average. Communication with the teacher isn't great. Look at previous quizzes in one note to see what it will look like.
Terrible professor, terrible grading system.Tries to be unique with his grading system, but it just makes it more stressful for everyone. He says that he wants the class to be not based on exams, but then weights the final exam abnormally high.Only reason he's still a teacher is because he gives so much extra cred for evals.DONT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM
His class is very demanding with homework due almost every day (including weekends) with breaks for tests/challenges. His tests are super tough and rarely match the online homework. His grading makes it stressful to pass the class and sometimes he will fail your test if he feels you need to learn the topic more, even if you get the answer right.
People are over hyping the challenges. Learn content. Even if you don't know how to solve the challenge you can get the answer by using Wolfram Alpha 90% of the time. Course is self taught which sucks. Key to success is do practice challenges so you get a complete on the first attempt of every challenge. Attempts scale in difficulty so this is key.
Dr. Xhumari has a good system for these hybrid courses, even if the material is tough. A lot of people don't seem to get that you ARE going to have to learn by yourself and that there WILL be homework and tests because this is a college calculus course, given his lenient stance and many chances if you know how to learn by yourself you'll be fine.
Sandi really helped me struggle through a tough class (Calculus 2) and get a good grasp on the content. I came to office hours frequently and he would often spend the whole time there answering my questions. He teaches you how to be successful in any class through his unique processes. He is empowering and knows how to push you to make you better.
His "unconventional" teaching methods did NOT help me learn at all. I've had instructors in higher-level math classes that I had to learn HIS material from, and I learned much better from THEM (not to mention that he used lecture videos from OTHER instructors instead of recording his own). Also, people shouldn't have to "decode" a SYLLABUS.
He's absolutely horrible. I can't even begin to express my dissatisfaction within the ratemyprof guidelines. You absolutely must avoid at all costs if you care about your GPA. The guy is a total whack job and sits around on teams 24/7. He'll spam you with bizarre, inappropriate messages; title 9 incoming.
Very ineffective and unorthodox grading system. It wouldn't have been that bad if instruction was decent, but it was subpar. Had to rely on Wolfram Alpha the entire course to eke out an A-, if you do a min of 15 hours a week study, you'll pass... you just won't like it. It's not actually hybrid, you only take tests in person, no instruction.
This is one of the worst math classes that I've ever taken. I usual try to take in person classes, but that class was full this quarter, so I took his class which was hybrid instead. It was a horrible choice, I would've been better off in the all online course that was offered. Everything except challenges are online, and he doesn't make videos.
Hes pretty kind, though his syllabus may seem to be very sophisticated (I took almost 4 weeks to figure out what was even happening) but as long as you fully read and understand his grading guidelines and stuff, you'll be fine. He has 4 grading criteria, individual and group challenge, learning engagement, and homework points all graded seperately.
He has a very unconventional structure of class, it took me the whole quarter yet still have not fully understood the syllabus. It's like a rule book for a game. I appreciate his teaching philosophy, you have many attempts to improve, BUT, he DOESN'T teach, you'll watch videos and study on your own a lot instead, what's the point of a hybrid class?
He doesn't teach, only posting a bunch of videos and incomplete textbook. You can't get all the information from the textbook so you're forced to watch a bunch of videos which have overlapped materials. And he gives cheat sheet with wrong function!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All these reviews are off puting imo. If you actually try in the class and read the material thoroughly you'll get a good grade. His grading format of challenges versus tests is much nicer for the student and in the end its easier to get a good grade bc you have multiple attempts for a topic. I recommend him. These reviews aren't accurate
He allowed the use of computers and internet in his class. Half of the people including myself were watching YouTube videos for help during the tests. He gives you multiple attempts and if you look at the previous tests he posts, you get a decent idea of the test. Would recommend. His unorthodox grading rubric once you understand it is very good.
Make sure you understand that you have to get 80% on homework assignments with a bunch of retakes, pass 4 tests with 4 attempts, group challenges are easy since you do the same tests just with a bunch of others who can help you so no need to worry there, and participate in discussion each week and that is it.
He doesn't have ANY lectures, so you need to self-study everything in the class. Many people say that his grading or syllabus is complicated, but it is easy to understand when you actually take the class. He is a tough grader, but he also gives students a chance to fix the problem. In general, he is a caring teacher, and I would retake his class!
