Very cut and dry teacher - what I thought was going to be an interesting class has been totally ruined by her. Her exams are difficult and confusing because she doesn't word things very well. Be preparedif you are going to take this class
Very slow at speaking, can be very boring, tends to repeat things WAY too much, and her ego is a bit inflated...even after that all, she is an okay professor.
Shes always willing to listen to stories and help anyone who has any question. Her knoweldge of the material is quite profound. However her lectures move really slow and she treats her students like were all complete idiots. I also didn't find it very entertaiing but thats a personal thing.
First year sociology: makes it EASY to get above 6 with her syllabus. Doing all the small assignments takes maybe 5 minutes each, some are helpful in learning the material, but all are an EASY MARK. Her lectures can be a little dry, but are important. Her midterm/exam questions are fairly lengthy. Overall, very helpful and ENJOYS student input.
great professor, VERY interested in student input. wants to hear feedback and opinions from everybody. her exams aren't overly difficult if you study for them and keep your notes up to date. overall, i totally loved her and am looking to take more of her classes in the future.
Dr. Colavecchia knows her material and her interest is genuine and infectious. She does move slowly sometimes but if you pay attention, it's easy to figure out what will be on the exams because she emphasizes points repeatedly. This professor genuinely wants her students to do well and with some effort and good attendance, double digits are easy.
Great Prof! Can seem a bit intimidating during lecture, only because she doesn't waste time with annoying or disruptive students (rightfully so). But in person she's very sweet & approachable! You can tell she loves what she does which is what sets her apart from a lot of other profs.
She is a good prof who seems to really enjoy teaching, however can treat her students like they are children. Its amazing when she kicks people out because they are talking!! She stands at the podium the entire class and reads off of her notes. Hard to keep my attention because she doesn't move- would love it if she walked around. She seems nice tho
Did not enjoy class. Could have been the material, could just have been her.
Her exam review slides were helpful to me but every class she put me to sleep.
Amazing professor, really loves her job. ALWAYS replies emails. I love her way of teaching, it's like a talk show. Also we learn how to apply the theory in creative ways which help me remember all them, although i took this class 2 years ago
Very engaging in her lectures and tries to keep the class participating. One of the few profs who relates academics with real world scenarios (essays, timelines, punctuality)... Can sometimes treat students like they are younger than they seem, but not intentionally. Very fair and a great professor overall...If you wanna talk in class, then leave!
Prof Colavecchia's way of teaching is extraorindary compared to many other profs. While i cant always attend lectures due to work conflicts, i appreciate her use of podcasts. She is extremely knowledgeable and approachable. A++ in my books!
Was intimidated by her at first, but shes a very sweet lady. Interesting stories, great presentation. Clear and concise. I attended all her lectures, took VERY thorough notes in class and did not read the textbook...I ended up getting a 90%. There is a midterms and exam ( multiple choice), 4 or 5 short quizzes worth a few percent and a paper.
Good, easy class. Puts up podcats and powerpoints online. I ended with an A and decided to major in Criminology(at York University) following this course. Recommend it.
such an amazing prof!
Honestly, if you love listening to older women babble on about their children and friends then this is the class for you! Also she speaks so slow, I could barely keep my eyes open.. lectures are almost wholly derived from the readings. Her quizzes were easy to ace but probably as a result of her repetitiveness.
Brutal difficult class
She is rude when you talk to her one on one. She is also very difficult to follow durring lectures because she is so dry. Her questions are poorly worded and uses trick questions. She talks a lot, and makes the course hard to be interested in, she through me away from sociology for good. Did not like her as a prof at all.
Dr. Colaveccia was an incredible prof. Her class is very much one in which you should attend both lecture and MAKE SURE TO READ YOUR TEXTBOOKS THOROUGHLY. You'll do fine if you do both these things, if not, you'll fail easily. Tutorials were boring, and not necessary. As a prof, though, she's interesting and quite funny, I loved going to lecture!
If you attend or listen to all of the the lectures there is no reason you can't do well in this course. She gives very clear instructions on the assignments, all tests are multiple choice. I finished the class with a perfect grade.
The only textbook that was useful she recommended was New Society. The rest like SIQ and the writing book were useless or you can find them at Mills. Her lectures were interesting and easy to follow along. She talks quite fast and expects you to write. Also, don't talk to your friends or she will call you out and will really kick you out.
great prof. never went to her class, never read any of the textbooks, just listened to the podcasts and made notes and got a very good mark. i like the fact that she podcasts every lecture.
very interesting lecturer makes course material interesting and fun. She clearly goes through concepts and things we should focus on for tests, exams and assignments.
EXTREMELY clear. Talks with the most clarity I've ever encountered. Her enthusiasm and interaction with the students is quite uplifting. The way she delivers her lectures are worth attending to. You can easily get an A- or B+ with minor effort. But note, I still said EFFORT!! She's great!!!
favourite class by far, super easy just go to lectures and you'll be fine, lowest grade for me was an 80. rarely did you need to do readings if you attend class and tutorials were not mandatory.
Really explains expectations clearly, I loved the podcasts because after lectures I listened to them at home and this helped for reviewing at exam time. She was extremely compassionate with some struggles I was experiencing. I loved her class and would certainly take all her other courses in upper years. She's strict with talkers but very fair.
A professor that will not respect answers that may seem silly and has no patience, even when she is in the wrong.
I really like her! Super professional and non-emotional which I think may get misinterpreted by some. But she knows her stuff and discusses interesting content in a well organized, clear way.
She is very well-spoken and articulates her ideas well (super helpful as this course was also podcasted for students listening from home). Provided many practice questions for her quizzes. The best part was there were no exams for this course. Merely, six quizzes throughout the semester each focusing on 2-3 chapters of material and a big paper!
This is the only class of my semester I genuinely enjoyed learning about - all real-life specific and easy to understand. SUCH AN AMAZING PROF to listentalk to, plus her podcasts are a LIFE SAVER
Shes a great teacher. Kinda funny but really sweet :)
The podcasts were extremely helpful, especially for students who only had sociology that day. If you take extremely detailed notes (really important if you want to do well) and do your readings, you should be able to receive a double digit score. In terms of the assignment, I found the teaching assistant extremely helpful in guiding me.
Amazing prof!
I am in love with this Prof. Her lectures are SO interesting and relevant to real-world concepts and ideas, barely do the reading (except Becker) and am receiving a very good grade because I am actively engaged in the lecture material. She's very nice, speaks very clearly, no surprises on tests (very clear questions), no final exam, awesome course!
Amazing prof! Podcasts are super helpful and she clearly states how to get an A. Would take any class with her!
Great prof! Her lectures are very clear, and podcasts are SO helpful. She covers very interesting material, and sets you up with the potential to do well. The only thing that I didn't like about this course was the way the essays were structured. I would absolutely take a course with her again!
She's a great prof who explains concepts very well. Her lectures are a little dry, but you'll be fine watching the podcasts. Her quizzes aren't too difficult, as long as you make good notes during lectures, and read the textbook. Definitely possible to get a 12
I hated her as a prof, lectures were dry, the TA's were badt, it was unclear (I found) what she wanted for her essay. Her tests I need a dictionary to figure out some of the words.
Her lectures are super dry. Considering Sociology is such a popular subject, I was disappointed by how boring classes were. (That being said, I appreciated that she also posted podcasts of her lectures). Also, the multiple choice questions she takes up in class are very misleading. Test/quiz questions are much harder than the practice questions.
Love this prof. Realistic, straightforward, and intelligent. If you do the readings and listen in lecture, you'll do great.
Her lectures are insanely dry, and her quizzes are either extremely easy or overly hard. There is no in between. I never go to her classes because her lectures are podcasted. That is the only good thing about her besides there being no exams. I really do not recommend her.. I don't like her whatsoever
the driest, most boring class that was hard for no reason. Her material barely made sense, and the lecture attendance proved it.
People say her lectures are boring but I didn't find that. Loved that they were podcasted! I will say - I got a very high grade on the research proposal but did not do as well on the paper itself.. I think the expectations could have been clearer for that portion of the assignment. Overall, I'd take her class again.
By far the best prof that I've had to date. Very clear teaching style and she has a way of taking terms/theories and explaining them in a way that is easily understood. Simply fantastic! Should of received higher grade but I procrastinated on the term papers but aced the tests.
Dr. Colavecchia is simply one of the best, if not best profs. I have come across at McMaster. She is insightful and explains theories and content in her lectures in a way that gets students to think outside the box. Her classes challenged my own views of society and I am so privileged to have been taught by her. Amazing person.
My absolute favourite prof at McMaster! Her lectures are great and she speaks about concepts so clearly that helps everyone understand. Love love love this prof.
Love the course content, found content I didn't attend lectures for to be difficult to catch up on. It was also difficult to obtain a great grade on assignments due to how broad the rubric and criteria were- however, this depends on your TA.
Honestly one of the best profs I have ever had! Sandy C is a gem, there is no surprises in this course she is very clear about the marking and expectations plus the lectures are super interesting. 10/10 would recommend
Her lectures are very dry and she gets off track easily. It takes her forever to start the lecture since she always has some random thing to say at the beginning of class. Her tests are by far the laziest I've seen which leads to the wording to be either convoluted, ambiguous, or unclear. Even the typography and appearance of her tests look bad.
Class on policies in Canada, if you know a lot about social policies and social issues in Canada it's quite easy and rather interesting to just listen to. Tests are made to be tricky because it's multiple choice but if you do process of elimination based on what you've learned, you should have little problems. Quiz questions given beforehand.
Really enjoyed this class! Super well structured and the tutorials are actually really helpful in understanding reading material. We covered LOTS of content in lecture, however there were podcast lectures available to help incase students were absent or needed to review a slide for their notes. Overall a very encouraging prof and great experience.
Interesting lectures, she podcasts them too which is great. The material is actually useful, and she teaches it in an engaging way (asks the class questions, gives examples, etc.) I genuinely enjoy this class and the way she teaches it. Only downside is her multiple choice is tricky but still doable.
Dr. Colavecchia is a great lecturer. Her podcasts are useful when you can't make it. I re-watched/re-listened to the podcasts when I was studying for the term tests. You can re-listen at the gym or while you're driving. The content is interesting. Make sure you read the courseware and know the facts for the tests/quizzes and you'll do well.
Great lecturer, interesting life stories before class, has a lot of knowledge on policy and law and relates it to everyday life. You can catch up with podcasts which is super helpful if you commute. Readings are not too long compared to other Classes and if you do them and go to class its easy to do well. Test are fair. Super interesting material!
She posts podcasts of her lectures which is really helpful for off campus students. The tutorials are boring and pointless, but the content in her lectures is very interesting. She is very passionate about what she is teaching. Her tests are also super fair, just do the readings and pay attention in lecture
I love Dr Colavecchia. She's one of the best professors I've had because she cares a lot about what she's teaching and she makes the material interesting. She's an amazing person too and really cares about her students but her tests are decently hard. You really need to study and know the material but it's 100% worth it to take one of her classes.
Sandra is such a kind lady! A great first year prof, she really made my experience enjoyable! She wants the best for her students and always makes sure students know that they are being thought of. Her lectures and helpful, readings are necessary, and course material is applicable to real life! Her tests and exams are fair. Overall, great prof!
The textbook and the lecture are word for word the same. Completely and utterly useless. The lectures are SOO long for no apparent reason, but the content itself is interesting. The way it takes forever to make notes, and her tests are based on fine details rather than the general topics. -11/10 would not recommend!
During covid, she chose to have her whole class asynchronous. The content is very dry and sometimes copied word for word from the textbook. There is nothing captivating about the class since you only look at the slides and lecture notes and readings. She also clearly doesn't read my emails b/c she doesn't ever answer my questions.
Heard from a couple of classmates that she can be kinda rude. Tests are filled with trick questions but you often won't have enough time to catch them. It's only lectures and readings. Not the worst class but not engaging at all.
Does not even try even a little bit too make her class engaging. Not to mention that the lecture and textbook readings are literally word for word. Her tests were tricky and with limited time it was really easy to mess up. Felt that she didn't want to teach or want her students to do well.
reads straight from textbook for lectures, very monotonous
Avoid this prof at ALL costs. I'm in my fourth year and this was one of my toughest classes, it was supposed to be an elective. Lectures took me 4 hours to get through, no midterm review, tons of textbook material, HARD and time-constraining tests, and extremely hard marker on essays. She was also short with me when I emailed her a question. AVOID!
Was not a fan of this class or professor. Very dry lectures that were essentially read from the textbook verbatim and not engaging whatsoever. I took this class during COVID and the entire course was just multiple choice tests... Try a different professor if you actually want to enjoy this class.
Literally the nicest professor don't know why other people in these reviews don't like her. 1C03 and 1z03 were the easiest A's (1Z03 is a little more difficult because TA's mark harder- got an A) you literally only have to read through slides a few times and the tests will be super easy. Sociology 1c03 was the easiest A+, so I recommend taking it.
I hate to be rude, but I will never take a sociology class again. So glad I'm switching out of this department because I don't want one cent of my tuition going to this woman ever again (idek if that's how it works). 2 tests and 3 papers, worth 20% each. Prereq lectures and she sounds so bored, its hard to stay awake yourself. Just take psych.
It's an intro course. Sandra isn't overly active in engaging with students and her lectures are pretty dry, but the TA's are helpful. There's little room for error with 3 quizzes and 2 papers at 20% each. If you have an interest in sociology, it's manageable. The papers are fun to write! If you don't, I definitely wouldn't take this course.
Pre-recorded lectures in 2020, very boring and always one tone throughout the one-hour lecture videos. Not recommended to take with Colavecchia at all
This class was a very fun class and you have many opportunities to boost ur mark. You have to read the lectures and the tests were straight forward. We had two reflection papers which were very easy and u can easily do well on them. I loved this class and the prof is amazing.
Extremely fair marker, theres not an overwhelming amount of assignments and you can get a decent grade in this course just by doing the bare minimum, I would definitely recommend Prof. Colavecchia
HARDEST GRADER EVER. her tests are next to impossible. Genuinely never felt like she wanted her students to succeed! Do not enter her courses unless youre ready to be tricked on allllll her tests haha I have taken all her courses hoping i would just get better - never did!
sandra is not it. tests are all multiple choice- no one likes an entire multiple choice test. she honestly does bare minimum !!!
Theres a lecture every week, 3 tests in total, and 2 written reflections. At first I would take notes about the lectures, but I realized printing it out is just as effective. The reflections werent bad, did them 2 days before they were do and luckily my TA was nice. The tests were okay, most answers are from her lectures. Dont buy the textbook
Her tests are designed to trip you up. Rather than testing content, she wrote questions that were easy to misread. She does not give any practice questions. The big problem with the class was the papers depending on your TA. There were 2 weighted 20%. For the first paper, not one person in my tutorial section got above a 77%.
Horrible. Her personal opinions get in the way of her lecture material. Class is a bird, but is painfully cringe.
She was great!! Tests and exams were straightforward and pretty easy. She took time out of every lecture to ask us questions and answer anything we had. She consistently pushed back due dates if she found out we were busy in other classes. Lectures were pretty light, same with assigned readings. Such a sweetheart
I have had professor Colavecchia 3 times, she is extremely far, makes sure all her lectures are recorded and accessible, and understands outside factors that may prevent one from completing an assignment and will allow extensions.Tests are straightforward and even if you aren't positive you can likely figure it out if you even glanced at the class.
she is such a condescending woman. her tests were easy but the essays were marked so ridiculously hard. no one in my tutorial section got higher than a 78 on our essays. she had to curve us in the end because the essays brought down the average. content was interesting though
Overall, I'd probably have given a 3-3.5, but I contested my grade for my first Reflection, and while she did not change the mark, Dr. Colavecchia clearly put time into reading it and providing thoughtful, actionable feedback. I appreciate profs who don't view students advocating for themselves with antipathy.
I found Dr. Colavecchia to be a very arrogant and rude person, and poor instructor. Her email responses were always short and vague, especially regarding questions on further clarification for assignments. I would not recommend taking her courses if you haven't already. She also suggests students buy her textbook as a requirement for her course.
The professor taught all of the material that was on the midterm and exam well enough and also recorded lectures which was great. She also didn't force anyone to participate. Overall though, she didn't present the information in a really engaging way and there wasn't a lot of instruction provided for how to write our papers
Super nice lady, but HOLY CRAP does it take long to get grades back. Submitted two papers for the class, and don't get the grades back until after 1 month.
very nice and caring, tries to engage students in lecture material
My fav prof at mac!! Exams were very straightforward and easy, paper was fairly graded and well organized. Lectures were really interesting, impactful and in general fun. Sandra is so sweet and a really lovely lady. Attend lectures and have some interest in course content and you will succeed.
Love love love colavecchia! Hands down my fav prof. Super interesting lectures. It's obvious she cares about her students and does her best to engage with them.
She's awesome! Her tests and papers are graded harshly but fairly, and her lectures are audio recorded. You need to show up and pay attention to do well, but it's really not that difficult as long as you listen and take notes. She's kind and caring and always has time to speak to her students.
I would say if your looking for a super easy course I would take something else (I found SOCPSY 1Z03 to be a lost easier), but if you are interested in sociology you can do well in the course. Make sure you write down EVERYTHING in this class as I found the tests were quite difficult and specific for a first year sociology class.
She mostly read off her slides and there was no need to purchase the textbook. Her tests and assignments were based on lectures, but be careful with the tests as they can be a bit tricky!
I took her Social Policy course last term, and she was very interactive and passionate about what she was teaching. She loved hearing personal experiences from students when it came to course content. Her tests were super easy if you paid attention to lectures and the papers were fairly graded.
Sandra was a bit quirky but did seem to really care for her students. Her lectures were difficult to follow, not because the content was particularly demanding, but because she didn't speak in a cohesive or linear way. She would often jump back and forth between topics or ask unnecessary questions. Overall, pretty easy class though!
Dr. Colavecchia's classes are great! They're recorded, which is very appreciative. She sometimes gets off topic but the content is overall interesting and significant. Also a very kind and passionate prof who loves getting to know students :)
All she does is read off of a long script. It is very boring, and her slides are not clear and are just filled with words. She has no idea how to teach. You also need to buy her textbook because she makes sure she asks questions from it. TA's are OK, they try but not very helpful.
The professor had no relationship with her students as all the lectures were prerecorded, based off a long (really long) script that was insanely dry and compact with information. These lectures were time-consuming and the content was repetitive. My TA was horrible. She graded harshly and never responded to emails following up on feedback.
LISTEN TO YOUR ELDERS AND DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS AS ELECTIVE. She very obviously does not like to teach. Tests basically only cover material from the textbook that she wrote. BS paper grading scale. Lectures stale and repetitive. She does not seem like she cares about her students. Beware!!!
Her lectures were obnoxiously long and she spoke with a monotoned voice. The lecture slides were copy and paste from the textbook. Tests were BS and the questions did not make sense at all. The textbook was also heavily used for the making of test questions and the lectures were useless for studying. My TA was bad and marked my papers horrendously.
Professor Colavecchia is a super kind individual who CARES for her students and wants to see you succeed. The course consisted of two tests and one written assignment. She gave me amazing advice on how to improve on my second test, considering that I did not do so well on my first one. She was just the sweetest ever and I really appreciated it! :)
Online lectures were boring. Every small thing she says in her script is testable for the online tests. The questions themselves felt very random and oddly detailed. The marking scheme for the reflections across TAs was not the same all across the board. This is not a bird course, and I would not recommend taking this as an elective.
Dr. Colavecchia is amazing! She records all lectures, so you only need to go in for 2 tests throughout the term. No final exam. The assignment is a reflection which is simple, but you do need to be thorough to get a good mark. Her lectures repeat textbook content, so you could probably do without buying the textbook if you wanted.
Dr. Colavecchia's class is worth taking. Lectures are engaging, and she's passionate about the material. Use unstuck study and the free textbook to ace this course.
Professor Colavecchia is very caring and approachable as a person, which was really nice to see. However, her lectures are basically copy and pasted from the texbooks and her teaching method can be pretty all over the place. Additionally, her tests are formatted really poorly and throw you off due to how detail focused they are.
not only are the textbook chapters ridiculously long but the lectures recordings is literally just the prof reading off the slides in a monotone voice. it sounds like the prof is reading off of a script or something which is disappointing because I really do love sociology and the way the content is presented makes it hard to enjoy the course.
PT. 1 I took her class last year, unfortunately mandatory for my major and let me tell you I would've done anything to avoid that disaster. She plays favourites like it's an Olympic sport and goes off on the weirdest tangents every two seconds.
PT. 1 I took her class last year, unfortunately mandatory for my major and let me tell you I would've done anything to avoid that disaster. She plays favourites like it's an Olympic sport and goes off on the weirdest tangents every two seconds. Like girl, no one cares about your personal life, we're just trying to pass!
lectures are boring asl. all she does is rely on a script and most of the things she says are unnecessary, making the lecture videos over an hour long when it couldve been like 45 minutes max.
Professor Clovecchia is kind and truly cares about her students and the experiences they share. I find that her lectures can be hard to follow as she ties in many different concepts at once and often refers back to past material, which can be difficult to navigate. This is a VERY test heavy course, there are 2 midterms and one final exam.
Took her first year course and thought I would enjoy her seminar but this was one of the worst classes i've taken at mac. Half the time discussion was ppl complaining abt their dating lives & she almost never redirected back to something relevant. Also would not communicate her boundaries/expectations clearly & made it the students' problem instead
Not bad but it was online so it was a bit dry
lowkey racist, HOGS discussion time, demeans students in a subtle jabby way like she's a mean girl in highschool.
This class was okay, ruined my interest in sociology a bit. Lectures were rigorous and boring. Tests and papers were relatively easy.
