An incredible teacher. She expects a lot, but gives a lot in return. Ultra-understanding, intelligent, and beautiful. Not just an excellent teacher, an incredible person!
Not an easy class for casual writers, but well worth it! Go to class, rewrite! and always be open to feedback.
She is an awesome teacher.
She's just amazing!!
She grades really hard and she gives a lot of work, but she makes the class fun. I really enjoyed having her last semester

And ENH214. Greating writing teacher. Will not BS you. Her experience shows!
this class was so boring and though she is very nice she also has a very strange was of communicating and makes things harder then they really are.

Wonderful class, but not a breeze. Willing to give you Ds on assignments, unless you try, re-write, and participate. Will seem like an easy-going class, but it isn't.
shes pretty hot for an older lady. i dunno, something about her i found sexy. shes really smart and warm. the class was intresting too.
Dogmatic teaching style. Class centers around receiving public feedback on short stories and poems from other students. Feedback from people with little experience reading short stories and poems is not particularly helpful. Instructor's feedback cryptic at best. Great at finding flaws, few concrete suggestions for improvement. Just rewrite it!
I enjoyed the class very much. Four essays, pop quizes here and there and one group presentation. Hated presenting but made it - the class is fantastic if you enjoy mythology. Sandra is very helpful and very encouraging. I am one of those "older students", but I think that would make me tougher on her, not softer. So go for it.
She grades based on how much she likes you and if you agree with her politically and or culturally.
this class was an interesting class but the way she gave random quizes was off.You have to do a lot of reading before classes out of the textbooks for quizes but she does not give any tests. only four main papers and one group project to do. She can find her teachers pets and side with them a lot and make you feel dumb if you dont say the right thi
She is a nice teacher, but only if she likes you. If you do not agree with her points of view, she will automatically blacklist you. Also an unfair grader.
She is a really great teacher.. but make sure you read the stories in longman reader because there is always a quiz on them the next day. you really dont need to buy the writers resource because you never use it. Shes a hard grader but if you like writing she'll definitely make you a better writer. make sure you turn essays in online!
Very good for bringing insight out and uotside in.
I liked this professor overall. She is approachable and nice. However, her grading was sometimes inconsistent. I agree she grades based on whether she agrees or not. Sometimes she would write really nice comments on my HW, and other times they were a little mean. A lot of HW, and the questions take a lot of thought. Take only if ready to work lots.
Horrible, listening to her is a task within its self, she grades unfairly and thinks she knows everything. dont recommend AT ALL.
She's an amazing English 101 teacher her class is probably my favorite class I have and I'm not saying that because I'm an English major
I have never had someone grade so difficultly. Also, whenever she gives homework, the questions she gives are so broad that it takes 2 hours to answer one question and then she grades you terribly. And the tests are absolutely ridiculous. She gives you the exam to take home but you have to memorized the page long answers instead of just turning it
I took ENG101 while I was still in high school and it was easier than high school English. Desjardins is a liberal hippy so she came down hard on papers written from a conservative standpoint. I don't feel like I got much out of the class. We wrote 3 papers and she sometimes gave quizzes in class. Attendance is necessary.
I also took enh 251 with her. She is an amazing teacher and helps you see the world in different ways. In her eng 101 class its all about you and learning how to open yourself up through writing. She LOVES essays with emotions to them. She is extremely helpful and very supportive if your having trouble. all you have to do is attend and be open.
She is awesome! i failed eng 101 with my first teacher and sandra knows how to make class fun and helpfull! the workshops really help to edit your essay! shes not to hard if you just read the few pages she assigns and do the papers! great teahcer! very nice!!!
I think she is the best teacher.
She grades WAY too hard. Doesn't end class on time. Her questions for her homework, tests, and essays are so unclear. She also doesn't provide online grading, she expects you to add all your points up and divide. Which is difficult when her points don't add up to what her syllabus lists. WORST TEACHER!
unfair grader.... dont reccomend her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
uselessssss.Dont recomend her .She got me lost allthe time...what is wrong with her ...
I heard bad things about this lady but didn't take the comments seriously. I should have dropped this class and taken it at Mesa CC. Just for ENG 101. What a bloody nightmare this lady is.
Not a good teacher.
She grades students unfairly. While knowledgeable in her field, she totally lacks the common skills necssary to teach English. I would not recommend taking this person for any class.
She has the know how in English. Just a severe lack of interpersonal skills. You better d@mn well agree or pretend to agree with her political views.
Not my favorite teacher.
I should have taken this class at ASU. This professor was a nightmare.
She definitely knows her stuff. Felt like grades were skewed a little at times, and a few times got told that answers to opinion based questions were wrong. Always great to have an intellectual discussion with if you're into history.
She has a slanted twist of grades. She is not straight forward.
I wouldn't take this professor unless you didn't have any other choice. If you have really strict/mean parents, you'll do fine in this class.
I learned a lot in this class due to the book, not from anything the instructor contributed.
At best, a medicore level of instruction. Sounds like she has the experience, but maybe has the lost the interest in students.
I took a creative writing course expecting to develop a better understanding of literature. Instead, I walk out of class on our last day knowing exactly what I knew previously. We would sit in a circle and analyze poetry and short-stories. Never were our assignments clear or productive.
She's more interested in your agreeing with her versus teaching you anything of value. She had us sitting in circles and doing her work for her.
Not a very good professor. Not a very nice person. Grades were distorted. I did fine. Others she didn't like, suffered. Not a very professional way to teach a class. Let this serve as a warning. You better at least act like you agree with "EVERYTHING" she says. It takes integrity to grade a student fairly. She doesn't have that.
Professor Desjardins is a strange person. She has difficulty communicating with students. Her class was boring. By no way does this instructor represent the other instructors at SCC. This was my only bad experience at Scottsdale Community College. My guess is they get a certain amount of years and it's tough to get rid of these bad teachers.
Be very careful with this lady. She is married to Robert Mugford, who also teaches English at SCC. Guard your words carefully.
Best teacher I've ever had.She is a hippie but that's the best part of the class. She's awesome!!!!
She is competent in English. She is inept in teaching.
She's ok if you don't mind being belittled in front of the entire class. I was surprised they allow this in a community college.
Not my favorite teacher. I would have learned more from another teacher. This was an unpleasant experience.
She's an alright teacher if you're not interested in learning too much.
This professor goes off of topic too often. She skews her grades. Too much work for an ENG 101 class.
I had Sandra last semester and she was one of the best professors I've ever had. She is quite generous when it comes to deadlines and even let's you re submit graded papers. She was down to earth and interesting. I would definitely recommend her!
Interesting topic, not so good instructor. My advice is to get a teacher without a chip on her shoulder.
This lady goes off topic too much. Taking this class online now. Much better teacher now. This is an example of SCC, no thank you.
Many times, the whole class did awful on the homework, and she never once thought it was her fault. She always blamed the students for any mass failure. Her directions were never clear.
An acquired taste. You either like her, or you don't. I really don't think there is an in between.
Ms. Desjardins is certainly not the most helpful instructor in her department.
I wish I'd read the comments on this site prior to taking this class with this teacher. She is really not good. Very vague when it came to explaining the calculation of my class grade. Ruthless, when defending the grade she gave me.
At first, her expectations of the students seemed high. Later only to find out, her grades are based on her personal view of the student and not merit. This situation is tragic. I would not recommend anyone with any choice to enroll in any of her classes. Sorry to say, other intructors teaching the same topic are capable and honest. She's not.
Not bad, really bad. Unfortunately a very unprofessional approach. She did not follow her own syllabus. Very critcal instructor.
I had a terrible time with this instructor. Her instructions were unclear. Her syllabus was messy. Her grades very unreasonable. I finally went to Mesa Community College to get an instructor with a clue.
Great experience!
I'd prefer to have a professor who was interested in teaching. With this instructor not following the class syllabus, staring students down and emphasizing her political views, was out of line.
Going into the class, my interest was high. After a poor experience with Ms. Desjardins, I'm changing my major.
I think I would have learned more if the instructor had a more pleasant demeanor. Her syllabus didn't help. It confused me.
I would have rather had another professor that cared.
Not sure what her problem is. Whatever it is, not really appropriate for the classroom as an instructor.
Professor Desjardins is a big liberal. She comes down hard on papers written from a conservative standpoint. I don't feel like I got what I paid for. She required 3 papers and she sometimes gave quizzes in class.
This teacher knows her topic. She's just not very good at teaching it.
The course requirements are somewhat heavy, at least in regards to writing assignments, but I have never had a better professor in my college years. She is inspirational and Ive taken every class she offers. If you do your worktry she will go miles out of her way to help you, and gives second chances.
Her teaching style is harsh. Her grades are unfair & unrealistic.
Sandra is challenging, but only because she wants you as an individual to challenge yourself. Sandra gives a lot of extra credit to fill in for the times you may mess up on an assignment or paper. I would get on average B's on paper and she would still offer tons of opportunities to get my grade back up! a great teacher and hope to attend more.
Ms. Desjardins is competent in English. She's just missing social skills. Also, it would have have been more professional if she'd follow her syllabus and did not skew her grades in favor of her pet students.
Intro to Creative writing is a tough class for serious writers. You are expected to work your butt off, take feedback gracefully and read, write, think at least twice a week. If you want an easy A, skip this. If you want to learn, improve dramatically, engage deeply with the process of being a writer, this professor will support you all the way.
Lots of reading for homework assignments that are due before the class period that they are lectured on. She's willing to help but make sure your question will get a straight-forward response otherwise you might get a mini-lecture on what you want to know. Take notes that reflect hw questions because that's what the test questions are based off of.
Yes, Desjardins can be a tough teacher as far as grading, but she is always willing to help students outside of class. She's very friendly and knows her material very well. I say she's an excellent professor; she has definitely brought out the best in me. I have learned so much in her class!
Learnt a lot from this professor!
Certainly, not my favorite.
Last moment, I hastily signed up for this class with this instructor. I really regret that decision. Ironically, I learned more from my critical error than anything actually taught in her class. I learned that when someone says to be careful, they are saying that for a reason. Next time, Ill be darn sure to listen and act on their warning.
Sandra is an exceptional instructor. Not only did she teach me how to be a better writer and poet. She was very helpful in other areas of my college experience. I was going through personal issues and I was going to drop her class, but she helped me. I feel very grateful to who she is as a teacher. I am going to take another class of hers.
Sandy expects her students to work hard and care about the class. She knows when you are not putting in due effort, and will push you to do better work. She is a great teacher with high standards-- no easy A's! She is very supportive and will take time to talk with you one-on-one when you need her. Classes are amazing if you put in the work.
Sandy is a great teacher and truly wonderful human being. She really invests herself in the class and in her students. Other reviews have said that she is biased and she is not. She does not tolerate mediocrity and challenges her students. Those who are complaining are clearly just not up to the challenge and are going to have a hard time in school
Ms. Desjardins never kept her office hours. Her syllabus was far from clear. She was excessively crticial of my homework. Her unreasonableness fuels my recommendation not to take her as a professor in any class.
Expect no help from this professor. Several times, I showed up to her office during her office hours. The door was always locked and the lights were out.
Horrible teacher
The lectures are long and there is lots of homework and papers. Tough grader and not always clear on what she wants, or CHANGES HER MIND. GROUP PROJECTS. Assigns projects at the beginning of the semester with scattered due dates, then tells you to exclude your partners who aren't doing so hot when it comes along. Did entire project BY MYSELF
Not very helpful.
This class is not for any student wanting to learn anything about creative writing. If you want an experience of a hippy "my way or the highway" attitude with her little favorites, this professor is perfect for you. I really wish I saw these reviews prior to taking Ms. Desjardins. She is a nightmare.
She can come off as very arrogant. She is a woman who believes very strongly in all of her opinions, but if you don't let external things get in the way she's amazing. She's very insightful, and caring. She has a lot of knowledge to offer. Overall, very smart woman with a lot to teach you about yourself. You must be open minded in her class.
Ms. Desjardins has an extremely abrasive teaching style/attitude. I didn't learn anything from her. I had to do it all by myself using the materials. I could have gotten the same level of assistance from my Pomeranians and saved a lot of time, money and grief.
It took me several tries to get her in her office at her committed time. I felt I should have learned more from the professor. Lots of work just to pass this class. Not for the light-hearted.
Really tough and unfair grader. Lots and lots of work just to pass her class.
A large amount of work required.
After completing all of her petty directives, she failed to abide by her very own created rules. After complaining to the department chair with written proof, my grade was correctly changed.
She tells you what the homework is the night before it's due. Don't bother working hard in this class because you'll get a bad grade either way. She insists that society is awful and you're awful for being part of it.
Tough class but I learned a lot.
Not understanding. Very moody. Her lectures were political, or they just tell you what she wanted on the HW due that morning. Grades fast but tough. Expects you to have a profound understanding of the book for HW/tests, sometimes even outside knowledge. Tough class if you have a tight schedule.
She will give long lectures reviewing what you already read. If you don't participate she'll just stand there and wait for someone to say something. Not to mention she will take the WHOLE period to ramble about the topic. She makes you feel bad for not understanding the value of the stories you read too. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT TAKING THIS CLASS.
Ms. Desjardins goes out of her way against struggling students. I was very surprised to personally witness such an attack. The student simply dropped the class. I'm sure the student doesn't feel good about it. I still have a bad feeling about this instructor and SCC. Others also left, just sickened of the high level of offensive conduct.
The most difficult class I have ever taken. The course work wasn't too bad, but everything that I wrote was expected to be written at a much higher level than a 101 class. I wrote a poem about very personal things and she attacked it and made me cry in class. Very stern and doesn't care about your feelings whatsoever. Do not take this class.
You MUST read the textbooks, take thorough notes, and participate in class. Don't provide short/simple answers on homework. Do elaborate and provide examples from the readings/personal insight as to why that's your answer. She's passionate and knowledgeable. Class isn't hard and her expectations aren't unreasonable. She just expects effort.
Over the top in assigning assignments. Tough grader also.
Sandra is an amazing lecturer. Be sure to give detailed, in depth answers on homework. You will be given clear deadlines, assignments, and instructions. If you follow all of them, you will pass! Also, you will learn a lot. The class was fun, even for people who don't normally take art/history/philosophy courses.
If you just do the work & participate, you will be fine. This was my 1st creative writing class and I enjoyed her class. She's a tough critic and grader but that challenged me. She engages and she'll pull you aside to talk about your work. She will call you out if you don't care. Last thing, do NOT write like your favorite author/poet.
I took HUM250 and 251 with Sandra and I got above a 95% both semesters. This is because I worked hard to earn my grade in a very hard class, meanwhile I watched other students fail and drop the class because they did not make school a big enough priority. Lol. How many dislikes can I get? #tryharder #suckitup
Best professor I have had, so far. Funny, caring and passionate about what she teaches. I got a 98.4% in the class, and it was not difficult. Listen closely to her lectures, take notes, put forth more effort than copy/pasting one or two sentences for homework responses, show up to class. Most students want an easy A and are simply too lazy to try.
Not the most positive experience at SCC. Be prepared for a lot of work in this class. Tough tests. etc.
Ms. Desjardins is not the norm at SCC. She is a tough grader. No sense of humor and never available during her scheduled office hours.
Instructor is not clear on assignments. I wouldn't take her again for any class.
As a student wanting to learn, I found this professor not very helpful. Just my personal experience.
Ms. Desjardins certainly knows her stuff. But, she is boring and complains about how much she hates teaching this class. A syllabus was not handed out. She was not clear about the requirements nor how much they count. A huge amount of work, petty rules and she presented the material in a confused way.
Smooth sailing until anyone indicates any level of questioning her assignments. Then it's watch out. Graded by few very difficult assignments. Inappropriate comments about an incident in 1999 regarding Chambers Moving and her husband.
Despite my making an appointment with her, Ms. Desjardin's failed to show up during her scheduled office hours. Also, she is disengaged - stopped caring, extremely forgetful and she's not able or not willing to elaborate on a concept beyond whats written in a textbook.
A large amount of work. If your schedule only includes taking this class in your life, you'll be fine. If you have anything else going on, like another class, work, a family, etc., you will not succeed in this class.
Tough grader. When on the fence, a borderline grade will receive the lower grade from this professor. You will never receive the benefit of the doubt from her. She is rude, uncaring and mad at the world for you being in her classroom.
Advice: Don't skip class. Pay attention and don't use your phone in class. Tests are based off of homework questions and answers, so study those. She also gives a study guide that is EXACTLY like the test, so study that. Ask questions if you need help. Even if you don't care for her personality, which many don't, you can pass the class with effort.
After two years at SCC, this was my worst professor.
Lots of material covered in a relatively short time period. You best be prepared for a lot of work. Ms. Desjardins is a hippy-type personality. As long as you always agree with her, no matter what she says about anything, you'll be fine.
If a student only has this class to contend with, it would be easy to pass. Unfortunately my grade suffered. I have a family, children and a job.
This professor was resistant to any other thoughts except her own. She is a rude person.
I'd recommend you seriously consider a different professor. If you're in a situation you must enroll in her class, consider a different college.
I raised a legitimate issue with this teacher and was treated like I had committed a felony. I dropped her class and went to PVCC.
My way or the highway minded professor. I witnessed several students just walk out and drop her class. I've never seen that before. This professor doesn't pull any punches. Just be prepared for that.
Disengaged professor.
Lots of surprises in this class, always bad. I still dont understand her not following her own syllabus.
This was a very difficult class for me. The extreme high level of work almost failed me.
An incredible high amount of homework. Most depressing, she never ever covered it.
Professor is much rougher than you would normally find at a community college. She really didn't care that my daughter was in the hospital with pneumonia.
I recommend you take a different professor. Her abrasive attitude is not very pleasant.
Lots and lots of reading. Most of it never addressed by this professor.
Her expectation is that you have nothing else to do besides her homework. I am a mother with 3 children. I have a job.
Lots and lots of homework. You'll get the sensation of drowning if you take this professor.
A very large amount of homework.
Get ready to dedicate much of your life to this class.
Entirely too much work for a 3 semester hour class. This professor has lost her touch with reality.
I wouldn't ever take this instructor for anything again. Very bad experience.
This professors personality flaws far outweigh any other factors,
The homework demanded by this professor was more than my other 3 classes combined. It was overload.
Way too much work.
Ms. Desjardins is not the best example of academic professionalism.
A very large amount of work due in a relatively short time period.
Professor Desjardins requires a much larger amount of homework than any other class I've had. She is competent in the field. She just doesn't care if you make it or not. As long as you know this, and don't mind getting a final grade of "C" or "D", from all of your work, you'll be just fine.
The heavy level of homework was a bit too much. Very strict on grading criteria.
Professor Desjardins makes the class more difficult than it should be. There are many homework requirements that take a lot of work to complete. If your grade is on the fence between two grades. She will assign the lower of the two. Her attitude is not very nice.
I think this instructor gave us too much work.
The workload created by Professor Desjardins was unrealistic. She failed to properly explain her requirements for completing homework. She was never available during her office hours. Her attitude was harsh.
As a professor, Ms. Desjardins was quite the challenge.
You have to read multiple pages for a few questions and doesn't tell you what pages to read. If you don't completely understand the entire concept of the writing in full detail you wont get good grades on the homework which is a very large part of your grade. She doesn't help you with understanding what you did wrong or how to do better next time.
She gives a lot of homework. She is a very hard grader. Her tests are very difficult.
Ms. Desjardins did not follow her syllabus. She is also a very tough grader.
Professor Desjardins made the class much more difficult than necessary. The heavy homework load is overkill. Her syllabus is inaccurate. Don't count her on showing up for her office hours.
I don't think the attitude demonstrated by Ms. Desjardins is helpful in a teaching environment. She is a abrasive instructor not open to any other concept except her own. She is very strict and maintains a chip on her shoulder.
She designs her class to involve a lot of student homework. Lots and lots of reading.
Sandra Desjardins has an impractical class agenda.
Ms. Desjardins is a tough grader. Her syllabus does not match her actual grading criteria.
Her lectures were hard to follow. Lots of homework & readings. Maybe too much if you ask me.
Too much homework. Really tough grader.
So much reading. A lot of work.
I got the impression Ms. Desjardins lacks the will to be an effective teacher. Her attitude was not in the right place. She gave incredibly lengthy difficult assignments. I could never find around during her office hours. Students on the border between grades never get the benefit of the doubt.
Professor Desjardins assigns a very large amount of difficult work. She is a tough unfair grader and fails to honor her office hours. Her belligerent attitude towards students is incredible.
Ms. Desjardins has a harsh educational approach. Her way or the highway. She doesn't mind belittling students in front of the whole class. She enjoys embarrassing students in front of everyone. She assigns a heavy difficult homework load. You will be kept very, very busy just to pass this class.
She doesn't follow her syllabus. Really tough grader.
Professor Desjardins required workload exceeded the total of my three other classes.
Firestorm level of difficult homework.
Attendance is a really big deal in this class. She also requires a lot of homework done outside of class. She is very strict.
Lots of outside class reading and homework. Very tough grader. If you hope to pass, you better never miss a single class.
While professionally competent, Ms. Desjardins has too harsh of an approach to students. The colossal quantity of homework is excessive.
Ms. Desjardins is a rough professor. Tough grader and she tracks attendance. I chose this class as an elective. It was a big mistake.
Her syllabus didn't match her actual grading and teaching schedule. She did not honor her office hours. Her attitude is very confrontational.
Ms. Deskardins is a tough, unfair grader that fails to keep her office hours.
This professor is a tough grader. I waited for an hour and she never showed for her office appointment. She requires a lot of difficult homework.
Ms. Desjardins knows the material well. She's just not very good at teaching it. Her syllabus is misleading. She is a tough grader. Don't count on getting help from her during her posted office hours, she won't be there.
This professor teaches the class as if you were at the university level.
An enormous amount of homework.
Ms. Desjardins is an extremely tough grader. She fails to follow her syllabus and is never available during her posted office hours. She carries a chip on her shoulder. She takes a very long time to get graded assignments back to you. She frequently comes to class late but you better not try it.
Great professor. Teaches as if you are at the university level, which is good for those who plan on transferring to a 4 year college after SCC. Come to class, take notes, ask questions, and study. There is no reason for failure. Those in my class who got A's worked for them, and those who failed simply did not put forth effort.
This professor can offer some good insight but also seems to be narrow mind on what she considers good writing. Her feedback can be very harsh when she is grading. While the feedback can be useful, I don't like her approach to providing it.
Sandra is amazing! All you need to do is show up for class, engage in the lecture, and complete your homework. If you put in the work you will be fine, but if you half-ass the assignments she wont be lenient. Shes a wise and kind person, as long as you dont disrespect her or the subject shes teaching. I got a 102% in mythology with her.
don't take her. you'll save yourself headaches. lectures are whack. material was ok tho. IGN rates 1/5
Very knowledgeable person. Large amount of homework. Very difficult exams. Incredibly callous individual.
