she is a fair teacher. her class consist of interesting lectures. you learn alot. She only gives 2 test the whole semester, and a term paper. It is an enjoyable class.
Sandra teaches Art History. Her lectures are conversational based. She shows a slide and you talk about it as a class. Don't let the term paper scare you off, it's actually not as hard as you think it is. Just make sure you take good notes in class.
Her class is manageable, but very very boring. Maybe because the lights are always off. But yea, I'm no art major, so I wasn't too interested in the class. So if it's a GE class, you might find it boring, not too difficult, but boring. Nice teacher though
I Took her online class last semester. It was fun if you like to go to museums and take pictures. Her papers are based on the topic and you can pic whatever topic. She grades not hard and you have to be very neat and organized if not she takes points out

FALL 2004/ONLINE CLASS, it's online class, those 9 weeks were very intese of reading and 4 museum visit through out the city. 4 tests at mtsac and 2 essay. i like art, but i dont have much time to spent on it, thaz why i got C.
She is a nice lady. Knows the stuff. She teaches this class with Hernandez. Preaty good team. They both interact. It is an interesting topic. Makes you think a lot. She is good.
Professor Esslinger truly knows about art. I needed the class to fulfill G.E. requirements. But I found the subject to be quite interesting. Her tests are not easy, but they aren't as challenging either. The tests are based primarily on her lectures, so you have to go to class. I'd recommend her.
EXTREMELY INTELLIGENT LADY THAT KNOWS HER MATERIAL, GRADUATE FROM USC, HIGHLY ORGANIZED, EXPLAINS MATERIAL WELL, U WILL LEARN TO DO RESEARCH LIKE NEVER BEFORE, I AM THANKFUL FOR HER GUIDANCE AND TEACHING TECHNIQUES. PASS WITH A B FOR SURE.
I don't recommend taking her honors course. The research paper is very hard to write and she holds expectations up high for the honors. test is not hard but you must read the book to get As. a lot of reading, but it's very very interesting. Once you start the class you earn interest. hard but fun.
Professor Esslinger grades very harsh, I did all museum visits, took alot of very nice pictures and still got a grade that I really thought was pretty unfair. She definately knows art, but for those of us that are not focused on art, TAKE IT EASY!
She is CRAZY STRICT with the essay portion of the tests. I knew everything on the essays and wrote it all down with superb english (its my major) and she marked me down for not putting more things in my essay when I already had over five examples/supporting arguements. Take Hernandez instead.
Esslinger is an awesome professor. She is very eloquent in her words and definetly knows her art! her grading is tough, so you really need to be on the ball and pay attention in class! you earn your grade, but you learn a lot in the process!
Her lectures are pretty interesting, considering I was very uninterested in art. I learned a lot in the class. VERY strict on the essay portion of tests. On one of my tests, I got about 90% of the multiple choice questions correct, I felt I answered the essay question thoroughly but my test ended up being a C. Recommend Hernandez.
very knowledgable in her subject area, tries to engage the students. not sure about the grading becuase of the combined class with esslinger.
SHE WAS NO HELP
I took this as a distance learning class. During the orientation meeting she was very precise in her instructions, however, changed them once the class started. This caused alot of confusion as she was very hard to get in touch with. Within the first two weeks of class other students were calling the department head to complain.
This professor has no people skills. When speaking to you by phone or through email response, she treats you like dirt. No matter how effective she may be at her trade, making others feel bad is never professional. I would not reccomend her to anyone!!!
Definately knows her stuff, very intelligent. but she went to school for art history, not to teach, so her teaching skills are out of wack. Hernandez is a way worse grader though. I'm an art history major, esslinger was alot easier hernandez is a super hard grader on essays, but she gives away lots of test answers cuz she doesn't double check them.
This professor is really rude and condescending to students. Class is okay but she needs a personality makeover.
Yeah, she knows her stuff but I agree that this professor can be kind of mean. I thought she was overly critical on the exams - doesn't help explain how to improve. Just makes you feel bad.
i knew i should have taken madsen for this class. i did everything i was told, but he tests were so damn hard. TAKE MADSEN!
She is an awesome individual. Do your work and interact in her class and you will do well!!!
Great for students who have an extensive background in Art/History. Those students will do VERY well. If this class is truly an "introduction," as it should be, proceed with great trepidation! There's little, if any, explanation give as to format. Lastly, take care not not ask the wrong question ... you'll be quickly labeled and categorized.
I took an online course, You have to study. But if you just read through and are a good self studier, you'll be fine in this class. Her museum visits are easy too. She is very fair and helpful through email communications.
dont ever take her class! doesnt help you at all she treats you like crap not very helpful when it comes to test she doesnt prepare you grades very hard on tests
She is seeminly unorganized at times and always arrives late to class and has endless technology problems. But she is very nice. Maybe a year makes a big difference but always as sweet as she can be. Also very intelligent. Knows her field and can offer tons of info. Great Lectures. Challenging Tests. I would reccomend her.
Online class. Didn't have much interaction, but she did respond to e-mails promptly. I took this class thinking it would be little work, I was wrong. Beware! I received an A. My advice is read the chapter right before taking the quiz (it will take 2-3 hrs). Go to course documents, print the Chapter Review, read it,then take the quiz. Good luck.
I've never seen a professor who tries to fail her students before. The class average for the quizzes has been between a C and a D, even from 4.0 students. Esslinger will NOT work with you and makes it incredibly hard just to get your work in to her in the first place. If there is any choice, take this class from a different professor!
Fantastic teacher and very knowledgeable about art history! Took her class for a gen. ed. credit and it ended up being one of my favorite classes! Learned a ton! Get out what you put in. Get involved in the discussions, take notes, and use the book as a study guide and you will pass, no problem. The only way you wouldn't pass is by not trying!
don't take her class! i had her online class and she gave off a really bad impression. appeared to be very stuck up. took a couple quizes before dropping. her questions are very desieving. a lot of work for a ge, especially for art history.
I worked really hard in her class, very hard I couldn't get an A. All the comments about her being good are put by herself, Everyone that took her class would agree.Do not take her.
I just took her online class, she knows her stuff, but she is very demoralizing, very hard teacher gave us way too much work. She is a very hard grader..She wants her students to fail. If you can take someone else!!!
KICKBACK CLASS, ATTENDANCE IS NOT MANDATORY BUT IT DOES HELP TO BE IN CLASS, SINCE THE TEST AND QUIZES ARE PRETTY MUCH ON NOTES....I NEVER OPENED MY BOOK AND I RECEIVED A B.....NO HOMEWORK, JUST 4 TEST AND MAYBE A COUPLE OF QUIZES
She is terrible & very mean. She has no respect for students and talks down to you.She also tried to make the online class of Summer 08 go on 4 museum trips (all in West L.A.)& threatened to give a F if we couldn't find a way to go.Luckily,a number of us students protested it and forced her to give us an option to take a deliberately difficult test.
Very hard class. Wants students to fail.
I TOOK THIS CLASS ONLINE. THERE WERE 4 FIELD TRIPS REQUIRED AND A DIGITAL CAMERA IS REQUIRED. I HAVE TO SAY THAT ALTHOUGH GETTING TO SOME OF THE MUSEUMS WAS A PAIN, THE ASSIGNMENTS THEMSELVES WERE NOT THAT DIFFICULT. SHE GIVES YOU 2 WEEKS TO COMPLETE EACH ASSIGNMENT. SHE IS ALSO VERY UNDERSTANDING AS LONG AS YOU COMMUNICATE WITH HER.
Good teacher
Took her online class. Not helpful at all and seemed very mean and intimidating during orientation. Hard grader and lots of driving to museums. Not a fun class unless you really like art and writing essays about them. Got an A though but it was hard earned.
I took the online class and it was very subjective. You will never see the key, you will never know what you got wrong. Essay grading very subjective also.
I tried communicating with her...never emailed me back!
Took her class online. She was the worst professor I have ever had. She was unclear in her directions, condescending in her reaction to our concerns, and hard to reach. she never finished grading assignments when she said she would and the museum trips/assignments were painfully boring. her class was a big waste of time! i got an A... not worth it
I took her Intro to Visual Arts online summer class. The quizzes were easy; there was only 2 or 3. The writing assignments were ok. Just flip through the book and look at the museum plaques for answers. If you write at a college level she will appreciate your work. I got an A.
Not the one of the best at SAC. I suggest trying for a decent prof, but don't have to avoid the class if she's the best you can get. Basically on your own, hope for the best.
As an online course, definitely the worst I've taken. She forces you to turn all work in on campus when blackboard is available for that. Tests are restricted to a 23 hour (yes 23) window that if you miss you fail because they are worth so much. Online classes are meant to be work at your own pace, but you are tied to her schedule. Skip her
I took her online class and it was great! I didn't mind turning the assignments in on cmpus...I understand her reason for that...she didn't want anyone faking their visits and she needed proof with a receipt. I enjoyed the class and it was well structured and organized.
Don't do it! I took her on-line class and it was a huge mistake. Requires you drive you assignments into school, grades your assignments and tells you standards afterwards. Wont allow early/ flexible submission of assignments and has no mercy for any life events. You are required to visit museums(fun) but grades you work with a sea of red!
Tried to take this class online in the winter thinking it would be a quick class to take but it?s a lot of work so I dropped. You can e-mail her questions and problems she will help but u have to go to 3 museums, a lot of homework packets and read the whole textbook and take timed quizzes. See if you can take another course.
I think some of the comments about her online class are unfair. People think an online class is going to be easier and they can take the tests whenever they want. Ive taken a couple online classes and they always have deadlines & sometimes you have to go into school or on fieldtrips. don't take an online course because you think its easy. Its not.
esslinger is a great professor and very qualified for her job. she is incredibly knowledgeable and obviously loves to teach. but it can be difficult to grasp some of the material covered in class, and when test time comes around its hard to know what to study. this is not a class you can pass if you slack off.
Her class is really hard to pass! You'll know that you should have write down "every single word"she said in class when you're taking test online. She'll give you the museum visiting instruction at the last few weeks of a semester. Trust me, that can take all your time away from your other classes. She may be the most difficult profs of art history
To the one saying comments are unfair, I take most classes online, and she is by far the most restrictive(not what a GOOD online course should be) I've taken. She def. knows her material, but I was forced to drop after a lack on her part of communication (emails were sent regarding a field trip and test that went unanswered) Waste of my time
I took this course online during summer, the comments are partially right, it is not an easy class just because it's online. There is quite a lot of reading but the museums were very fun. The assignments are easy and if you know follow instructions you will surely get and A. The tests were also simple. No trick questions. I enjoyed learning art!
I knew nothing about art before taking this class and totally enjoyed it and learned a lot. As long as you do the reading and the module worksheets you'll do fine. A huge plus is that there was no midterm or final, the module tests were considered a midterm and final.
This class does require lots of reading and hard work, but it is not difficult. Make sure to plan your museum visits so that you have enough time to thoroughly and concisely complete the assigned modules. This will help you be prepared for the essay exams.
I had zero interest in Art History prior to taking this class as a requirement. I am glad to say that I have since taken quite the interest and have even gone onto do a little independent study on the subject. Her lectures are very informative and she encourages student interaction (which makes the class very fun). Great Professor!!!
I took this class online. The profssor was very clear on readings and what she wanted in your projects. There was a ton of reading and projects took time. Exams were essays, but she gave us the questions ahead of time to study and multiple choice. All based on reading cuz of it being online. Gave extra ponts if class was struggling and graded fair.
Took online class in a short session, thought it would be a fun class because we got to visit all the museums. Makes you do a lot of work in a short amount of time, wants multiple essays in assignments for the museums and grades them extremely hard, confusing with what she exactly wants.
Just finished taking this class online during the Winter Session. Tons of reading, videos, and 3 MAJOR projects. It may be easier to take this class during a full session and in the class. I enjoyed the museums, just make sure you take pictures of every item on the worksheet (+ the wall plaques) to help you answer the questions fully.
Took it online; did well, but it did take a HUGE amount of work. First of all, get your textbook: Art of the Western World (Wood, Cole, and Gealt) and READ it. Watch the videos! Dr. Esslinger is fair and encouraging, but she does have a high standard, so you'll have to put in quite a bit of time and effort into your work to earn an A.
Class wasn't too hard. Lots of work, but not difficult. Make sure to read and spend time on the museum assignments. Tests were difficult with 2 minute per question, but she gave extra time for the final. Not too bad.
MANDATORY MEETING. THREE MUSEUM VISITS. THREE ASSIGNMENTS. THREE QUIZZES. THREE TESTS ON THE THREE ASSIGNMENTS. FAIRLY EASY IF YOU DO YOUR WORK AND GO CRAZY WITH PICS OF THE MUSEUM AND WALL PLAQUES. CAMERA NEEDED AND RIDE TO MUSEUMS. I GOT A B! AND WORKED FOR IT. =]
Don't do it. If you think about taking her, smack your self and pick some one else. She will be the worst choice you ever make. She doesn't help you. she doesn't clarify anything. She forgets everything. And you have to pay for her mistakes.
Great Professor! I highly recommend her class to anyone that has an interest in art history. She is very clear and is always available to work with you if you need help. Her lectures were inspiring. Do yourself a favor and take her class. She prepares you for upper division classes, and makes sure you are a competent college student in the process
Personally, I would not recommend her. All the information she tells you that you will need for the tests/quizzes YOU DON'T EVEN USE. I studied hard for a test only to find out none of the questions were relative to what she told me to study. You have to drive to your assignments (Museums) The visits were the only fun part.
DONT TAKE HER! I took this class online due to working full time and you only have a certain window to turn your assignments in AND you have to drive to the school to drop them off. I get it if you were taking the class in person but the whole point of DISTANCE LEARNING is because something is preventing you from being there in person.
I would only reccomend this professor to people who are really interested in this particular subject or subjects like it. They key to passing this class is to spend as much time out of class as possible studying. No homework is given but you should still take this class seriously.
Great teacher, easy to understand. if you're not interested in art history she makes it less painful. A lot of memorizing paintings and terms.
Shes tests on only a few art pieces but expects you to have a more in-depth understanding of them. I found her tests included some questions she never discussed in lecture. Curves. She required a museum visit with a very large essay. Don't take her for a super easy A, but it is possible to get an A. People who already love art will love Esslinger.
Very Interesting, Take good notes. Tests are based on the lectures more than the book.
great teacher she was helpful and informative. just do the work and put forth some effort you'll pass.
As a science major, taking an AHIS class felt pretty irrelevant for me at first. But after taking this class, it allowed me to have a whole new perspective towards art! Just memorize the paintings and take really good notes during lecture and you'll be fine! Sandra is amazing!
I took her online class of AHIS1, and it wasn't too bad at all. You will need to go to three museums during this course, and fill out a long questionnaire type-assignment in regards to the art for all three museums. Also, for the tests, make sure to really focus on the study guides she will give as it can be of a huge help!
She seems very sweet but the way the class is set up is bizarre. You are required to go to three specific museums (Pasadena, San Marino, and Brentwood) between very specific dates- no sooner, no later. The other large issue is that you must turn in a physical packet to the library every few weeks. It all defeats the purpose of distance learning.
I took this class online and it was very hard! I didnt think an INTRO to art history class would be this hard. The study guides are not that great and the tests and quizzes are timed and in my opinion she does NOT give enough time for either.
Took her in winter and it was SUPER HARD. Moves VERY fast and doesn't guide you. Lots of reading from 2 books. Timed quizzes/tests based off the readings and 2 museum trips to Huntington and Norton Simon. Trips require VERY long questionnaire forms that are hard to do. Didn't expect an online intro art class to be this hard. Don't recommend her.
GREAT art history class from renaissance to modern. Extremely well versed on the subject and brings lots of genuine enthusiam to the class. Fun clase for art lovers, stay away if you want some Easy throwaway online course like some of the weak student reviews posted here.
Class is difficult in but she is willing to help. If you put in the time and work then an A is manageable but if not you'll struggle. She is super sweet and is very enthusiastic about AHIS and she tries to make it as interesting as possible. 2 trips required with questions forms about the art but they're not that bad. Take her.
Took ONLINE class to raise GPA. You basically read entire textbook. HER study guides REALLY help !! Two museum trips museum worksheets take a while to complete b/c they are long and detailed. 3 Exams were not difficult BUT read and do the study guide !!! 2 quizzes, study as well. You wont have time to go online and find answers. Not easiest cour
I wish I could just ask, why. Why are my answers supported by the quote from the text she assigned are marked wrong when the answer is in the quote? Why is there no break whatsoever even in the midst of the pandemic when the whole school pushed for mercy and understanding? Why is content so disorganized that it takes hours to figure out what's due?
Professor Esslinger did not provide any lecture videos and no security for taking MULTIPLE CHOICE TESTS! Required readings are decent but lectures elaborating on the readings would of been nice. Some exams were unprofessional in language. Her Museum project was fun. Very easy class if taken over the summer but would be difficult in person.
It's an art class, and you will have to work like a workhorse just to get a passing grade. There are no curves, no point adjustments, and a very expensive textbook that you'll need to buy due to the access code. If you're attempting to take this class just for the 3 units, take another class! This professor is not your answer to 3 units.
this professors test have non-thing to do with the reading or art it is about obsolete fact with in the reading not what you would focus on or take notes on and she does not let you know what her test could be, what you should focus on. If you pass her test you are cheating or mind reader. I took her class several times she does not teach anything
