Tough to get an A. 250 points total/ 5*50 point mc exams. You'll end up with 8-10 bonus points at the end of the year. The grading scale is not curved(90A,80B,70C). Lectures aren't essential to go to unless you pay really good attention. The book is a good way to figure out the lecture slides. Do not take this during summer!only fall and spring
Very helpful, provided as much help to anyone who asked for it. Was not even close to as difficult as people say. Studying was necessary, but other than she made every attempt to help the students do well in the class
I took this class last spring. It is very easy to get a B in her class. She gives extra credit, and she also gives e.c. if only a certain number (6) of cell phone calls go off during the semester. The material and the way she teaches is very straight foward and simple.
i was actually scared of this class, the material isn't as hard if you go to lecture and go for help! she is one of the nicest professor that will actually HELP YOU if you just come and ask. very easy going and nice personality. as for the class material, it is tough but as long as you stay on top of things... easy class.
She's the best prof. I've had. She made me feel really comfortable and was ALWAYS willing to help out. I stress that you get help and ask q's. There is a LOT of material, but keep up with it, and you will do fine. Make sure you study the lecture notes and her study guide/questions. Those are really helpful.
extremely nice lady who helps you out, just come to her office hours or if youre afraid, you can post a question online. her test is pure memorization for 35 questions and the other 15 questions are critical thinking. take her instead of witmer, since she gives extra credit and her lectures are far more interesting ;)
Her test averages were below 60% for the first two exams and the Final. I would NEVER take her again or the other teacher at UIC. They both never finish the lecture material, but test you on it anyways. There is not enough homework assigned to help make up for subpar test performance. How can you have half your class fail the first two tests?
I had this class at 8:00 am so I almost never attended the lectures. For the tests I read the slides and went over her review sheets and a got a B in the class. In my opinion this is an easy class.
She's very clear on what you're suppose to know for the exam. She gives out a TON of extra credit points. The papers are easy A's that boost up your grade. The exams are straight out of the lecture slides (kind of a lot) but it's so do-able. She's nice and easy going.
Not the best teacher
Even though the professor is very nice, and is willing to offer a great deal of help, do not take the class during the summer. You only have 3 exams, and you can lose your chance to get an A as of the first exam. Exams are very detailed, and you have to memorize all of the minute details, so study ahead of time!!! Answer all of the objectives too!!
good professor, but I HATED HER PERSONALITY! Never go to her for anything but learning the material. I got dropped from the class, and althought it was the school's mistake, I never got credit for the class even though I took almost all of the exams. She was of absolutely NO help. She's not like other caring UIC professors
She's a great teacher, very clear and powerpoints notes are very helpful. She almost never finishes the material and tests you, but she helps out by posting notes online before the test. Easy if you go to class and study.
Does not care how her class is doing. She claims curves are rewards for bad grades, what the hell! The people taking this class are not just in it to slack off. When everyone fails the first two tests SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH YOU. I have NEVER studied so hard in my life! You have to memorize the tinest details to do well on her tests!
i liked her lectures very much. made the material VERY interesting! her exams are tough but it's a 300 level course so expect it to get hard. Know every detail, go to office hours for help, show interest, and enjoy the course and you should be fine. You do have to expect to put a lot of time into it though.
very nice
She is one of the nicest teachers I have had at UIC. She really cares about the students and has a true interest in whether or not the students are learning the material. I wouldn't say it's a must to attend her lectures since she puts everything online, but it's definitely a plus. She makes the material interesting and explains in more detail.
She's nice and helpful with most of the material. Her powerpoint slides contain most of the material on the tests. But the tests are near impossible to getting an A, but its a 300 level class so be prepared. Don't expect to enjoy the class if Biology is not your strong point. No final but there are 5 exams and hmwk is easy but the grading is tough.
Interesting class, but if you screw up in the beginning your messed up for the whole semester. Shes a cool teacher, everything on the test is on the slide lectures. But sometimes she puts whack questions that aren't on the slides so yea watch out for that.
She is a great instructor and always eager to explain things, and class is also great. The thing with that class is that is not curved but there's no cumulative exam which is good since it's a lot of material.
Its a 300 level class so be prepared. No final, just 5 tests and hmwk. You need the book to do tutorials, but otherwise her slides contain everything you need to study for. This class is very hard especially since Biology isn't my strong point! IF it wasn't for the homework and tutorials, I wouldn't have passed.
She's an awesome professor. You should go to class because she explains EVERYTHING in her lectures-which is good because the book is BORING. The tests are hard but its a 300 level class so should be expected. She also gives extra credit to help your grade. She's the best bio professor I've ever had!
If you have had cell biology, the class will be so easy. If you haven't, this class I hear can be hard. Don't buy text book because all exam problems are from lecture slides. You however need to borrow it for doing 5 online assignments, which took me about 6 hours. The exams are straightforward DIRECTLY from lecture slides. Attendance is a must
I love her!!! she is THE best professor at UIC! feels good to have a professor who is so sweet and caring and loves to explain and have students understand!! but you have to attend all lectures because most of the test is from what she says in lecture and not in the book or powerpoints but who cares..she is AWESOME!
Go to class, write down everything she says on the printed lecture slides, and fill out the objectives asap. This will all show up on the exam. You don't need the big textbook, but you do need the story book for hw. She's a nice lady and very understanding. She will help you understand certain concepts if you don't. 310 points in the class with e/c
She is a superb lecturer but the class is harddddd you have to keep up. Go to class and take excellent notes, record lectures if u can and reading the book also helps for clearification. She goes really fast and always behind on the schedule. also every figure in lectures is important, know them in &out.
Super hard! The material is very difficult to understand already, still her exams questions are often misleading. She does give extra credit points though. Also, she's very helpful when you stop by her office hours. BUT STILL--study a week before the exam if you're not keeping up with the material, read the book and DO read her questions carefully
An A is easy if you study for the first few exams. Exams are mostly based off the slides. Nonetheless, she did make exams increasingly difficult, because more people were getting As in the class than she could allow. Homework was bogus (most students I talked to thought so), and it's as if you're not allowed to get full credit.
She is a great prof and is extremely helpful. Just because she has great ratings does not mean she will go easy on the exams. They were difficult and requires lots of time to study. Do not take this class as a blow off class. If you go in for help, she is willing to help at any cost. Homework for this class was great and easy full credit.
From the first class she said to STUDY THE DETAILS and yes, she requires a lot of details on the exams but the slides she posts on blackboard are very helpful. I would recomment to record her in class and listen to the lectures later to do detailed notes( there is no way to write she says in class). $ online quizes and book club assignments.
workload for the class wasn't bad. tests were difficult, you have to really know the concepts well. tests were not cummulative and there was no final. come in to office hours because she is more than happy to help.
Probably the best professor I've ever had at UIC. She really cares about her students and their understanding of the material. Because she explains everything so well, exams aren't horrible. You must study, but she has a list of things to know for each unit (objectives). There are online quizzes and articles you answer questions on, but they're easy
She is one of the best professors i've had at UIC. She is really great at explaining what you need to know and is open to answering all questions. Her exams required a lot of studying and some oustide work is required for homework. It is not a blow off class at all, but it is a very interesting class.
She very very good. Very helpful and friendly. Makes sure we understand befor moving on and encourages questions. Super easy to get B if you want an A, you'll have to be in time.
She's a pretty good professor. She restructured her class and it's awful, with pointless online homework that's due before you ever cover the material. As a teacher though, she's fairly knowledgeable, a very nice lady, and a pretty competent teacher. I hated the class, especially with the ridiculous grading now, but I do like her. Good lady.
Great teacher! A lot of homework, a lot of extra credit. If you do everything one time and attend classes you should be fine. You mostly need to study notes from class.
Good teacher. Unnecessary homework, but it is easy. Exams are tricky memorize the slides and attend class and watch it again. Do all the questions of the day. Never used the book except for homework. Get all the extra credit. She will not bump you up even if you are .1 point off from the next grade.
Amazing teacher. Study the slides and you will be fine. There are homework assignments but they're not bad and masteringmicrobio doesn't count for much in the end anyway.
Lots of extra credit, so don't worry too much. As long as do all assignments, and get high B's on exams, will get an A in class. Go to her office hours- very helpful for exam hints etc. Turn in assignment to BB early bc if there's a glitch, too bad so sad. Memorize slides, especially the stuff she says in lecture. Don't need to read book.
She is a very good professor. To get an A or B in the class, go to lecture, listen to lecture capture, do the questions of the day, and do the homework (obviously). The exams are based off of what she says in lecture so don't waste your time reading the textbook. The book is only useful when it comes to doing the online homework.
very nice lady! cool class learned a lot of interesting things. definitely a must take
Very straightforward class. I didn't end up using the book at all. If you're going to ditch class, watch the lecture capture. If you only go off the slides you will be in trouble. Online homework is easy and comes word for word from the book. Tests can be tricky. Overall one of the easier biology classes I have taken at UIC.
she talks really fast so i suggest using lecture capture & really understanding everything b/c the tests are really hard. homework is easy except aren't really worth much. shes a nice lady i just think her class is really difficult due to the fact that her exams are really tricky and you REALLY have to know your material and it is a lot of material
This class was VERY interesting! There are three exams which are no bad if you studied hard. She gives a good amount of extra credit and the masteringmicrobiology points make a difference. You learn a lot in this class and its worth taking. I got an A! :) Lecture capture was helpful because she is a fast speaker.
Don't listen to anyone who says this class was hard! They are clearly not the sharpest crayons in the box. I skipped every lecture. All you need to do is watch lecture capture and note what she writes in RED on her slides. This is very important! The questions on her exams refer directly to these RED markings. Do all assignments. Easy A.
Book is not needed for this class, a lot of homework but is easy to do...overall class was interesting and i learned a lot from her. Nonetheless her teaching was superb!! I wish she taught different type of classes.
Interesting class. Not boring and one of the best Bios classes at UIC. HW is easy. Service learning units easy. Scientific American is easy but time consuming. EXAMS are what determine your grade. Written portion is freebie. Multiple Choice is tough, but NOT TRICKY. TAKE HER CLASS IF YOU CAN. You won't regret it.
this is an interesting class but not an easy A. you do have to either go to lecture or watch lecture captures. homework is easy. exams were somewhat difficult but the essay portion is pretty much given to you ahead of time, you just have to memorize the answers. shes REALLLy helpful if you go to office hours. textbook is just there for help.
Exceptional. She really wants to help her students succeed. It seems like she gets angry if you don't ask her for help. But the tests aren't bad. Most ?'s came from the online HW. She gives you the short answer questions beforehand. Her HW is also easy, but time consuming. Downside is that she talks a little fast. Overall, take her.
I recommend not buying the book b/c there's an online book. Write down everything she says, attend class, and do challenge questions ahead of time. She's nice and helpful during office hours and after class. Interesting class, I gained a sense of appreciation for biology through this class.
Professor Gibbons is awesome. She made me appreciate more about the health care field and biology. There is a lot of materials.. listen to her lectures! and book for specific details. Come to her office hours if you have "Any Questions!" haha. She is so helpful and so expert at the subject :)
Awesome professor! The exams can be a bit challenging but it is a 300 level class. Really easy to get a B in this class and you have to work a bit harder for an A. Homework is very easy and helps boost up your grade. She's sweet, helpful, and makes the course very interesting. Highly recommended course for bio majors.
Amazing professor. She records her lectures so if you miss it you can basically watch and listen to it from home. Her tests are based off the lecture notes which are based off the book and she gives you the essay questions that are going to be on the tests beforehand so its not that hard to study for it. She also gives extra credit. TAKE HER!!!!
For those that don't go to lecture you better take her afternoon class because if you take her morning class and not more than half the class shows up she won't put up a lecture capture of the materials you missed. For homework, read the powerpoint then answer question and you'll get most of it right. For exams read the other post here.
Gibbons was a great professor. She explained everything well and repeated things several times if they were important. She is nice, helpful during office hours, and just a great professor in general. She has definitely increased my interest in the topic.
The class was overall very interesting. She gave excellent lectures which were essential to understanding the material. Most of the exam questions came right from her slides. Make sure you study what she writes on them. The only bad thing about this class is the strict grading scale. 90-100 A 80-89 B etc... So make sure you aren't borderline.
Have to do a joke of service project. She is a very good teacher, but erroneously adds clicker points at the end so make sure you show up or have a friend in the class to rack them up. Tests are basically off the slides and make sure you are prepared for ALL the short answer questions provided. A lot of A's were blown because of short answer.
make sure you go to lecture. her tests are easier than malchow's. if you want clear and concise. she does use iclicker in every class, so attendance is mandatory. study from past exams.
She basically dumbed-down the material so even an elementary school kid could understand it, which was helpful even though the material wasn't difficult. Her multiple choice test questions are easy and straight-forward. It's definitely possible to get an A in this class with all the homework and extra credit assignments.
Professor Gibbons simplifies complex biological concepts and basically what she teaches in lectures are on the exams, which are super easy if you go to class, do the homework, and read the textbook.
Sandra Gibbons is a great professor and lecturer. She explains the concepts very very clearly and is good at explaining the material in the class. She practically spoon feeds you the material. If you do bad in this class, then you either didn't try or should change your major.
If you're the type that reads the textbook before lecture with the expectation that the lecturer will expound on the intricacies of the material (because heshe expects that you've read the textbook before lecture), Gibbons is not foryou However, if you just want to be given powerpoints summarizing the textbook, take 100 with her. She's an easy A.
This prof has a knack for teaching and understands her students. Extra credit was given and a couple HW that really is there to boost your grade. Test were basically from the slides. Lectures were really well written and she explains everything so effectively while genuinely keeping my interest.
She changed the way she lectures. She prefers to do the learning outside of class by assigning guided readings for the book. Then there is participation in class by using learning Catalytics, sort like iclicker. The reading needs to be completed before learning Catalytics and mastering assignments. There is no curve. A 89.9 is a flat B+.
Use the book for guided reading assignment. Some people uses her slides but she doesn't lecture on them. The learning is outside of class and participation is in the class by using learning catalytics. Read the whole chapter and take notes because the tests uses questions from learning Catalytics and mastering. 4 tests. 2nd test is HARD. NO CURVE!
Professor Gibbons is great, exams consists of 50 multiple choice and lectures are not really lectures, but learning catalytics (like iClickers), 7-8 questions per day. You're expected to read before class and online HW is easy. Exams were straightforward, with no tricks or strings attached. I never did the guided readings and still got an A.
Professor Gibbons uses Learning Catalytics, you need to learn material independently and reinforce what you learned during class, there is no traditional lecture. If you keep up and take advantage of the class format, this class is not difficult. Mastering hw and postlectures are free points and the exams are fair. With effort, you should get an A.
She changed course grading strategy, which now includes in-class participation and online homework. No traditional lecturing, but you can still use the powerpoints that she posts online. Exams were fair and easy, except Exam 2. Make sure to review all homework and assignments questions before exams. Expect similar questions on exams. No curve!!
She uses learning catalytics and as said before, you're expected to read before coming to class so that she can reinforce what you've learned. Exam 2 is HARD! The rest are okay, and it's possible to get an A if you work for it. I was taking KN 252 along with it, and I felt like I learned more in that class when learning the same material.
In lecture everything seems really straight forward but on the tests the way she makes you apply it is really difficult. you must thoroughly study for the exams any questions
Easy class as long as you go to class and pay attention.
This class was not as easy as everyone below described it. Biology is my passion, but this class was very challenging. 4 exams with questions from mastering & learning catalytics. With effort, you can easily get a B. I worked hard, but the style of the class is not easy for me. You use learning catalytics and studying must be done on ur own time.
The course was difficult! Reading the book is a must if you want to get a good grade on the test. Exam 2 is the most difficult- all the others are OK. Going to lecture is also a must since points are given for learning catalytics. I highly recommend to go to class and do all hw assignments. Points for hw make a big difference at the end.
Instead of using I-clickers, we used our computers to answer questions during lectures. No more power point lectures anymore, READ the topic in the textbook. There's a ton of homework and quizzes online. Try to get at least an "A" or a "B" in all of them. She has worksheets to help for the test and very approach if you have questions.
There's a lot going on in the class. If you don't put he work in, you will not pass. Many homework assignments to help you succeed.
This semester she changed the way she teaches the class--she actually lectures now instead of just doing learning catalytics every dat. There are a lot of hw assignments (and you actually have to read the book), but it helps you tremendously. Doing well on the hw and learning catalytics will save your grade at the end of the semester.
Dude i have no idea what everyone else is talking about, but avoid ! exams are extremely difficult
This class is a lot of work, but it's manageable. Each week there's a packback assignment, guided reading questions, and usually a mastering assignment. So be ready to work. However, Gibbons gives good lectures and keeps them somewhat interesting.
You have to be on top of everything from day 1. Instead of reading the book, I rewrite my notes from lecture capture and study those before the exam. She requires a good amount of homework, but it's mostly graded on completion, so do them, bc every point counts! It's an interesting class and I learned a lot, no matter how much I hated the homework.
Gibbons is an amazing professor! She's very nice and her teaching is one of the best I've seen at UIC. No textbook needed! Just go over the lecture captures and take detailed notes/understand what she's teaching. A lot of homework compared to other BIOS classes but they boost your grade. Exams are decent. Stay consistent and work hard. Liked 350!
Professor Gibbons is an amazing professor! Her exams are all lecture heavy and straight from the powerpoints, so make sure you take note of what she says in class while going over the slides, that stuff will always be on the exams. Although there are a lot of assignments, they are all so easy and most of them are graded based on completion.
The class is very difficult. Not only because of the huge amount of material but because she gives you a million of homework, group projects, online assignments, you have to create questions about each chapter, write reviews so there are lots of additional jobs which was completely useless.
Professor Gibbons is a good teacher. Her voice can be a bit grating , which makes listening to her lectures sometimes a pain. However, her lectures are very clear and explanatory. Her exams were difficult for some people, but as long as you studied and took the time to actually understand the material, you'll be fine. Got an A, didn't take final.
although she may come off as intimidating, she is a caring, understanding professor who is always willing to assist her students.
One of the only good profs at UIC. Take her if you really want to understand stuff. I loved and UNDERSTOOD stuff in her class. Micro does have a lot of material tho, so attend lecture, take good notes, and keep up with hw and its easy peasy, at least for a 300 level class, piece of cake. I wish she taught other classes too!
Don't, just don't.
A good professor, she gave us the textbook for free. Took attendance but lectures are super important because everything she verbally says could be on the test. And yes I mean verbally. Listen and take notes, study and you'll survive.
I loved having Professor Gibbons for Microbiology. She honestly knows her stuff and is excited to teach about this subject. She explains things so clearly and gives a lot of metaphors and comparisons to simplify the material. She uses a free online textbook to help students out. The class is hard, but if you read and listen to lectures, it's fine.
Very stubborn and refuses to listen to other students. Lets just say it took people reporting her to the head of the biological science department for her to realize her online final was glitching for many, many people. I did well and loved her lectures. But I hate how she treats her students.
Her formats for exams this semester are insanely hard... I study so much for the exams and still don't get A's on them. 50 scenario questions in 50 minutes, not enough time and very difficult questions.
She does not give enough time for her 50 minutes of 50 questions. Her exam 2 was extremely stupid!! She does not know that those applicaition questions take more time. Average of entire class was a low 60. she also refuses to give any extra credits, which is fine. But her exams are to a point that you end up doing worse than you thought.
All you're graded on is exams and a few online assignments that don't count for much. The exams cover 3-5 chapters, and the questions require that you have multiple things memorized for each one. The concepts aren't difficult, but be ready to memorize for hours a week if you want an A. If you're just taking it as an elective, choose something else
This class is all based on exams. She doesn't curve either even though all our exam averages were in the low 60s. She makes this class harder than it needs to be, the exams don't reflect her lectures and she makes no accommodations for students.
Gibbons does an amazing job explaining, but her exams have nothing to do with what we learn in class. I dropped her class to take it at a different school because she is the only professor for BIOS 350. I can see how passionate she is about teaching it but I can all see how passionate she wants to fail her students.
Difficult, stubborn, and FORGETFUL!
She explains things really well but exams are HARD. Her questions are very much in detail and more of application stuffs. Even if you understand all the materials, her questions are just hard. Pretty much thought i did well on all the exams, but always got in 70s. She never curves, so don't take this class with other heavy material classes.
lecture captures are not fully reliable. not her fault. just heads up for upcoming class. She is very specific, Avoid if u can.
Even if you study, you are not going to get more than 70. its her deal .... hate taking this class. saw good reviews but not true of them.
I was recommended this class and knew ahead of time it would be difficult, this professor clearly has lost any heart she had for the job since the recommending student took the course. Sandra is clearly in it for the overpaid money and not to actually help students.
Hopefully I can save other students some time, DO NOT TAKE ANY OF SANDRA GIBBONS CLASSES!!!, she is a scatter brain, has no heart for teaching if I was the collage I would seriously persuade her to retire for her own good before she embarrasses herself anymore.
She doesn't follow the course , not reliable, all over the place.
Lectures and other information never matches up with tests/quiz
Ive never felt compelled to write a review before but with all of these negative reviews I figured I should. This is the easiest course Ive taken by far. I am not going to lie I am a lazy student, I dont always put in much effort in to my classes and I tend to cram so my grades arent great. If this classes grade were based solely on exams I pro
Easiest class. Clear grading criteria-knowledge checks per chapter for 5pts, 4packback assignments for 15pts and 4 exams worth 100 points. Exams are based on lectures which are recorded on lecture capture so attendance isn't mandatory. only thing hard about this class is memorizing the points that she makes but if you can do that you'll get an A
First prof here to genuinely make me rethink my major. Exams are an absolute joke. She says they're application questions but how can you apply something if you haven't learned it?? Idk where these good reviews are coming from. I suggest taking 350 elsewhere bc she's the only prof at uic to teach it. I have no idea how or why she's still teaching.
Her lectures arent bad but you need to actually learn the material to do well on exams. Alot of the questions are application types so memorization wont work. If you put in work youll do fine. I only gave her a bad rating bc shes very rigid and not rly helpful. I wouldnt recommend taking this class with other core classes bc of the studying time.
I won't say her class is hard. It was pretty easy but the only way you can pass her exams would be to have a really good memory or be a bios major. It's really easy to get a B but an A is hard to get. I recommend to take the bios 351 lab with it. My friend said it helped her score high in exams.
WORST professor at UIC, literally does not care about her students and RUSHES through lectures when she's behind on her material. Will literally go through an entire chapter in one class then make the exams on the rushed material. She is unhelpful. I honestly feel like I haven't learned anything in this semester.
She is a terrible professor. Doesn't care about her students, rushes through material when she's behind on lectures and still expects you to know every detail. Her exam questions are like brain teasers and you will be tested on details that aren't on the slides but were mentioned for 3 seconds by her. Won't round you even if you are 0.5 points away
No real wisdom imparted
Made me want to transfer to another university. Do not recommend taking this class unless you want to be stressed out of your mind everyday.
This is the worst Professor I have encountered. Her pppt's for each chapter are 10-15 slides with minimal information. She expects you to learn from her verbally for 50 minutes 3 days a week and even then you must further investigate concepts on your own. She has 0 compassion and expects you to figure out how to teach and challenge urself for exams
The work is very tedious and you have to buy two apps to use that really do nothing for you. You have to watch her lecture captures in order to comprehend what she says and the exams are all concept based. wILL LITERALLY She only rounds if you are 0.5 points away (89.5 means you'll get an A).
She was a very good professor and really knew what she was talking about. Her tests were application based and did require a good amount of knowledge. Her powerpoint slides are basic and you need to watch her lecture captures to truly understand, but assignments outside the test are very easy grade boosters. You will learn a lot from this class.
I remember being really scared to take this class because of the reviews I read, but they are not accurate at all. Professor Gibbons teaches everything really clearly and always stopped to take any of our questions. You definitely have to study and work hard for her exams, but this class is meant to prepare us for the real world. She really cares.
I'm almost positive that the people giving Prof Gibbons a bad review did NOT want to put in the work for this class. It's a 300 level bio course obviously going to be challenging. Averaged 87.5s on her tests studied with a couple people. Make sure to take in depth notes on her lectures and just review that. You will get an A. You have to work.
Microbiology is actually very interesting, but it is A LOT of memorizing. Recommend going to her lectures and writing everything she says down, because most (if not all) that she says will show up on the exams, which are tedious. UNDERSTAND CONCEPTS, don't just memorize. Gibbons herself is sweet and caring, good at explaining. Just put in the work
Focus on the lectures. She mentions a lot of materials in lecture that is not on the book. Small details in class will show up on your exam. Exams are detail oriented and application based. Attendance not mandatory, everything is on lecture capture. The assigned brochures and knowledge checks are good grade boosters! Class is not curved.
Professor Gibbons knows what she is teaching and honestly explains the concepts really well. She offers a lot of homework and other opportunities to getting more points for a better grade. She can be strict on deadlines and other formalities but isn't too unreasonable. Tests weren't bad. Rewatching lectures and noting down details HELP a lot.
This class is difficult if you do not take lab with it. All the test questions are application and if you don't take lab, it's hard to understand how the concepts apply. Taking notes was useless because all the material was information based, unlike the exam. Take this class somewhere else.
Said she was retiring like 10 years ago
Sandra is nice in lectures but when you approach her individually shes rude. She is not accessible at all with test taking. Shes very monotone so its easy to fall asleep in class. Brochures are graded easily and packback questions are just a pain. some Exams Qs ask for details and are long and just tricky. LECTURE CAPTURE WILL BE YOUR BEST FRIEND
She taught me nothing. No lectures, she would just assign YouTube videos and readings from the textbook. She does not curve or drop any grades. She is rarely accessible outside of class. She is a firm believer and encourager that a letter grade of C is not the end of the world. By far the worst professor, take this course somewhere else if you can.
professor gibbons has a passion for microbio, but she did not show it as much this semester. she posted lecture videos only 1 week of the 16 week semester. if you don't read the book, you will NOT get an A. she is not a mean person, she's just kind of lazy. her course was very well structured!
She will make you read, teach, watch, and do everything yourself. You cannot rely on her for anything. She will not help you. She will email saying, "I appreciate your hard work and I hope you appreciate mine too", but she barely did anything. She posted youtube videos and book chapters for us to study. This class is very much self-taught.
I never used this website until today so I can warn people about how awful this professor is. It was all online and somehow she decided to provide no lectures. She gave us the textbook and homework and had us figure out what to do for the exams on our own. This class is for med students, if you want a good grade do not take this class.
She's okay, but I would have preferred her to provide lecture videos instead of just telling us to read the textbook because tuition is not cheap at all. If you ask her to do a review session during normal class time, she'll make excuses of how busy she is. It was her choice to teach 4 other classes online & we shouldn't be affected by that lol
I too didn't ever feel compelled to rate anybody on here until now. Exam questions are tangentially based on what we learn (by ourselves!) and I honestly got more right from my own medical experiences than from the materials she didn't even make. I maybe heard her voice once this whole semester because she refused to give lectures. Disappointed.
You answer weekly learning targets, critical thinking questions, and knowledge checks (took hours to complete, all from textbook, dont bother watching yt vids). Completing these was a snooze-fest every week. Preparing for exams disintegrated my brain cells bc of how much we had to know. Lockdown browser for exams.
I was excited about this course when i registered but it was AWFUL. Since it was an online class, Prof Gibbons did the bare minimum. No lectures, she just linked a ton of youtube videos, so you will need to rely on the textbook. SO MUCH material is squeezed into each section, making exams difficult. Other assignments were also very time consuming.
Ignore the bad reviews, I say that because it's the truth. If you're lazy and don't want to study, you'll hate her. People would even admit in the group chat that they would study on the day of the exam (with only a couple hours to spare)!! People would turn in assignments late and would get full credit. Come on guys, get it together.
Horrible. You basically have to teach yourself from a poorly written book and Youtube videos. She gave a lot more work than any other class for a 3 credit hours course; half of my time was spent on this class and I took 18 credit hours in the fall! There were no lectures until the last exam units. I would wait for the in-person classes to take her.
Very bland teacher, little if no emotion in her work that sure is not needed but is helpful.
This is literally the worst professor Ive ever had. She never lectures or teaches. She expects us to learn and memorize ALL THE MATERIAL through the reading the textbook and YOUTUBE VIDEOS. If I wanted to teach myself microbiology, I wouldnt have paid for this class. I should be the professor by the way I have to teach myself all the material.
The majority of the class was about how she was suppose to retire 15+ years ago, it was an annoying class.
She gets paid for doing absolutely nothing, and this class is based on youtube Videos. There's lots of homework in this class every week. There are 5 difficult exams based on heavy content, Which we are gonna learn from Youtube, how Someone gets paid for doing absolutely nothing.
She did not really put time into anything so I'm not putting time into my review.
She doesn't provide study material or any review session before the exam. Her class is about self-study by using the whole textbook. During this pandemic, many students struggle with their lives and don't care about how hard our lives are. I would not recommend this prof for BIOS 350.
My semester isn't even finished and I completely agree with all these reviews. Lazy professor that expects you to know lots of information from the textbook without giving any lectures herself (she just links youtube videos!). Definitely the worst professor I've ever had. It's absurd and enraging that I'm paying her salary.
i would stay far away.
Worst professor I've ever had. When youtube is your go-to for teaching then anybody can be a teacher, right? What a joke. I can't believe an institution allows this type of professor to be teaching such a difficult class. Prepare to do a lot of self teaching and it helps to have friends in this class.
We've literally never seen her face because she literally does not teach. All she does is link the textbook and YouTube videos. She is the laziest professor I have every had. What are we paying UIC for honestly?? She's obviously tenured and does not give a crap. What a waste of money and effort for us students.
Dont even find a way to convince yourself to take this class with her even after reading the reviews, that was my biggest mistake. she is terrible, her "teaching" is linking YT vids, and textbook. She is extremely lazy and doesn't have any passion to teach, if she even ever did teach. I have no clue how she still has a job.
I have never in my academic career had such a horrible professor. Every aspect of this course exudes her laziness. She pawns off other people's youtube videos as our lessons for the week. It took a month to realize she doesn't even care enough to switch the matching question on our homework out of ABCD order. I'm horrified she's allowed to teach.
Worst professor ever. I didn't even take her class yet and I'll make sure not to based on these reviews. A buddy of mine took it, he is tears right now. Also, her class should be called Youtube and chill since you won't hear her voice at all during the semester.
Please do yourself a favor and do not convince yourself that youll be okay taking micro with her. How does someone even have a degree to be a COLLEGE EDUCATOR when YouTube is doing all the work? On top on that for some of us, our final exam wasnt working. She told us to contact lockdown browser support team, shood us away, and showed no empathy.
To be honest, I actually liked the textbook we used. It was kinda interesting and easy to understand. But I absolutely did not watch a single one of those boring videos. The weekly assignments were honestly some bs and the TAs would take off points for no reason and she wouldn't do anything about it. Hated that. Respondus was used, exams were ehh
This class is the most interesting science class I've taken at UIC. Dr. Gibbons has been nothing but amazing. Her lectures are very well organized, and she is very clear about what she wants students to learn and study. My advice is to take notes based on the learning targets of each chapter, attend class, and use the provided resources to study.
BIOS 350 is a memorization heavy class; however, the slides are essential for this class. I personally did not follow the "learning targets", and mainly just memorized/understood everything written on the slides. Her lectures are great at emphasizing the important parts, and correcting or clarifying material on the slides. Tests weren't difficult.
Worst professor I ever had. It's almost as if she doesn't care about her students. Her teaching skills consist of just reading off lecture slides. She's not very understanding and does the bare minimum. Every science class I've taken came with a curve at the end except this one. I hope she changes her grading system before she "retires".
Grade is heavily based on exams. There's 5 in total but easy to fall behind if you get a bad grade since the other assignments aren't worth as much points. She was not very lenient and doesn't show empathy at all. Reading from the book helped me a lot more than the lectures.
I really enjoyed taking her class, I think the bad ratings were when she was online, but I had no issue w in person. Sometimes she can trail off during lectures, but I think it shows she's actually interested in what she's teaching and honestly helped me understand. Exams are very very fair and never tripped me up. I recommend her!
Very bigoted
I took this class spring 2020. The negative reviews here didn't make sense so thought of adding my own. It's an easy class if you do the right things such as following her lectures and taking notes. Do extra research on some topics to understand the concepts deeply. Exams were easy, discussions and assignments were straightforward.
This prof is awful, I would not take this course again if anything depended on it or any course by her. She talks to much, her heart is not there she only talks about retirement and wanting to go to Michigan.
This teacher does not seem to be a teacher imo.
The class can be manageable if you follow the lectures and do extra research. Exams are straightforward, but the professor lacks empathy. Unstuck AI helped me prepare for tests.
