I got the feeling that some students were getting help that others weren't. The in-class writing really was a farce. AVOID...Mean spirited and biased.
I had this professor over two years ago and when I think about her it still makes me mad. She played extreme favoritism to students and was very biased. I never felt like I could do anything right in her class.
Rude, nasty, unhelpful, and blatantly biased. Trust your instincts with this teacher; if you think something is wrong, bail out.It's not your imagination.
Some students produced perfect papers in their in-class writing assignments (front and back sometimes)in ten minutes. How did they do it? Hmmmmm...
This woman is stuck in the '60's. Expect to pay for the sins of your forefathers.
She is extremely biased to some students. If you are in her clique then you will do just fine. She is not at all helpful if you go to her. Not structured AT ALL and makes it obvious who her favorites are. Nice sometimes, but not in class.

Biased to the extreme; actually sneered and rolled her eyes in front of the whole class at my choice of author for an oral report because he was white and male. If you're white, expect to be treated like crap, still pisses me off and took her years ago

She is a very good teacher very interesting. She will call you out if your late though or fall asleep. Jus do the work and come to class prepared and you'll do fine...otherwise u'll hate the class and her
Dr. Govan is the best professor I ever had! If you are here to learn you should definitely take a class with her; she'll make you rise above yourself if you're willing to work hard. It totally eludes me why someone would call this devoted teacher biased!
Dr. Govan is certainly devoted, she does enjoy what she is teaching. She is VERY biased, however, so be warned. If you are white, then do not expect as much attention. I saw this happen in several instances. She is quite unstructured as well.

Its not that poeple don't want to exceed their best, but she definitely doesn't encourage you to. In fact, she makes one afraid to even speak for fear she will think their ideas are stupid. She is biased, totally. Not friendly and humiliates students.

She is very inconsistant with grading, do not submit anything for help for she will not guide you to do better. She leaves you very unprepared for finals/midterms/presentations. No guidelines for anything

Govan is definately a good teacher and you can learn alot. BUT: She is also definately biased. If you are white you will have to prove yourself to her (showing an interest in black authors goes a long way). Liked the class, but did feel uncomfortable.
I love having class with her. She engages the mind and approaches many different aspects of a piece. I'm white and I have not noticed any sort of biasness. I enjoy taking her classes because she encourages discussion and intelligence.
The woman has a chip on her shoulder. She needs to get over it. If you don't detect overt bias, you're either deaf, blind, or biased yourself. Her class is not worth the money OR the aggravation.
I don't think anyone else could get away with the stuff she gets away with in her class. Students show her MUCH more respect than she shows to them. What's wrong with this woman? WHY IS SHE STILL HERE?
It is difficult to add much to what has already been said about this teacher except that her attitude is very apparent to all. It's like she is trying to even a score or something. I can't imagine why her behavior is tolerated.

If you find yourself in this woman's class and you suspect that you have made a huge mistake, you have. Get out of the class as fast as you can.

She is definately demanding, but I got alot out of her class. It basically gave me direction with how I read book etc. (English Major) and this being my first 4000 level class definately told me what was needed of me. Great women in my opinion.

Great teacher! Whiners and those looking for a free ride beware, you won't get it from this ALLSTAR professor. Very passionate, knowledgeable, and FAIR. I didn't get an A, but I don't believe that I earned one; so, I'm content. Dr. Govan is top-notch!

I am 2nd generation Scandinavian-American (blonde hair, blue eyes). I can trace my family tree to the 1300's.She remarked -- in class-- that I am probably part black. What was the point in that? Form your own opinion.
GREAT professor--if you're not afraid of an intelligent, proud African American female. VERY knowlegeable. Would definitely take her again! If you're looking for a challenge, Govan's your woman! Whining, spoiled, and unchallenged individuals--BEWARE.

If you find yourself in this woman's class and you suspect that you have made a huge mistake,you have.Don't wait until the end of the semester. Drop the class ASAP. You don't have to take her nonsense.
You do not have to be of any particular persuasion to see what goes on.
"In your face" is right. I am not sure anyone wants an "in your face" kind of professor. What's the point? As for "making you think"... All I thought was how much I wanted to get the class over with.
Now here's another winner for ya! Can't imagine who would take a second class with her OR find her particularly engaging except for certain marginal students for whom she goes to great lengths to make sure they pass. Even the faculty is on to her.
Was expecting a diverse basic English and composition course. The authors we read were a rather undiverse mix of minority authors and touchy politcal issues. Was often confused if Eng. Comp. was the goal of the class or exposure to minority literature.
Let's put it this way... well, uh.... SLAM! How else could i put it?
VERY challenging professor. Great class! Not an easy "A". Teaches you to think OBJECTIVELY. Close-minded babies BEWARE, she will not babysit OR bottle-feed. Very knowledgeable in AA literature so EXPECT to learn a little about it. Embrace divers
This is one woman who is hard to put into words. Let me just say this: get to know her and befriend her, you will do okay. She definitely plays HUGE favorites with her students. If you are a favorite, guaranteed B, if not, expect to work hard for a B.
Think objectively. READ! READ! READ! No easy 'A' or 'B' here. Oh...be ready to learn about African American culture. FANTASTIC professor! Just do what is requested (i.e.; READ) and you'll do fine.
Great class and professor. I learned alot from Govan, including how to read objectively. She doesn't give 'freebies' and she expects...no...DEMANDS that you learn. I am a happy white student who learned alot--including something about another culture.
I found her personality unapproachable and manner of speaking confrontational. Class is interesting when lectures remain on-topic and objective. Those who are most likely to give negative evaluations quit LONG before evaluations are given.
Govan is a quirky lady who lets the occasional expletive slip during lecture..i'm never bored in her class and i actually look forward to it. no easy "A", thats for sure. pay attention to her syllabus - she's no babysitter or high school teacher
Unless you enjoy being insulted don't take any class with this teacher. Be prepared to drop the class if you DO make the mistake of taking her class. And make sure you get the same handouts that others get. And watch who drops the class before you do.

Dr. Govan is smart, but very hard- she expects us to do the work and not whine about it. The TA is really helpful and funny- as long as you don't try to BS her.

if you need to learn ANYTHING about western culture,this isnt the class. take this as an oppertunity to learn about racism, and black history...bc thats ALL we talk about. Its obvious who she favors

Opinions & facts are two totally different things. Just because CERTAIN students aren't interested in the 'real world', the facts of it and the multi-layered history that goes along with it, doesn't make the course content inappropriate. If it were this professor wouldn't have the position she does.
If you are interested on learning about Western Culture DON'T take this class. The only thing you will learn in this class is about racism and black history. You do a ton of reading and the tests are on pacific quotes in the book. Unless you have a incredible memory I wouldn't take this class.
I am really thankful that I sat through her arduous lectures and harangues.Before I met Dr. Govan,I THOUGHT I understood racism and discrimination. I learned about it firsthand in Dr. Govan's class by witnessing it and experiencing it. She made the issues real. I'll never forget her.THANKS SO MUCH!
She looses people's papers and tests. The class objective made the class seem like we were going to be learning one thing, but she made it all about the oppression and struggle of minority groups. Beware she doesn't take opposing positions well.
she is one of the worst teachers here at UNCC. Hard headed and loud mouth. even if she is the only class open that satisfies your goal dont take. she makes it way to difficult to learn, and has a chip on her shoulder about things that happend long ago. let it go!

I took Dr. Govan's (van-like the car!) class about 10 years ago.She opened up our eyes from a lifelong slumber of prejudices which most of us didn't even know that we had.Because she challenged me so creatively and on so many levels, I consider her to be the best English teacher that I have ever had

This was one of the worst classes I have ever taken. Everything related to race.She Picked her favorites. Called students out in front of the class like in high school. Lost papers, assigned busy work, would cancel class and not tell ya, and when she was there she would eat your food!
Dr Govan is the best professor at UNCC! If you think she is difficult you must be lazy. This is the 1st professor who challenged my CRITICAL reading skills & race is a HUGE issue that many of us live with daily. If you are lazy and unmotiveated, dont take her. If you're not, you will enjoy her alot!
She is very unorganized, constantly late and keeps an attitude. She is unclear about her objective and I didn't learn anything from that class. Her class is a waste of time and money. If the answer is not to her liking then she will tell you. DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HER CLASSES!

You're in college, stop the whining! She's not going to babysit you. Yes, she doesn't handfeed you material, but she's fair and she knows her stuff. I made a B in her class, but I learned more than in any other English class. She's not the most organized, but I know I'm better prepared for other classes beyond this because of her.
God, she was tough! But, I learned so much. I'm white and made an "A" so you can stop the BS about rascism. For god's sake, it's African American studies; we're going to talk about slavery. She NEVER made me think my view was unimportant & regardless of my opinion, she listened to me. I didn't talk much in class, but did my work and it paid off!
Nah. The class was horrible. Teacher had favorites. I felt excluded (I wonder why?). She took way too long to respond to important emails. Yeah, she knows a lot, and if she didn't have such a chip on her shoulder, she'd be a GREAT teacher. She has issues which negate anything good that I could say about her and her class.Compassion is lost on her.

I agree with the previous post. She seemed a bit over her head. Made lots of errors and was often vague. My HS teacher was better than this one.
She annoyed me as a teacher, however, I am glad I took her class. Her lectures and class discussion helped me to find a deeper meaning of covered materials. The work and reading was excessive but I made a B in her class. If anyone taking her classes will read and follow what she puts in the syllabus then you should make at least a C.
This class was a waste of time. All the books we read, and there were many, were the same. The quizzes sucked and she only gave us a few days to read books before a quiz. The class was so boring and I really didnt like the way it was taught.
Worst teacher at UNCC. Definitely ****. Gives you like 1-2 days to read a book, then gives insanely hard quiz on it. If you speak out in class, you'll either be a favorite or she'll talk to you like your stupid. definitely NOT recommended!
While I think she is a good teacher, she knows what she is talking about and I think she is genuinely a good person, I would not recommend taking her class. She basically expects you to have a new book read each class period and when it comes to her tests and quizzes, they are extremely vague and very difficult even if you read the book.

I hated this class and professor. the quizzes and tests were too vague and she expected us to read a 500 page book every other day. she didnt teach anything and it gets so boring you will either drop it or stop going all together. don't take her class! you will regret it
I hated this teacher and this class. Her quizzes are ridiculous and she is extremely biased. You are always wrong in that class unless you agree with her. I had three other friends in this class and the grades ranged from A-D and we all had the same quiz grades, journals, and attendance. DO NOT TAKE HER YOU WILL IMMEDIATELY REGRET THAT DECISION.
when you get to class the first day, she gives you a syllabus with 8 books to read plus an expensive coursepack to buy that has more stories in it. she doesn't start assigning books until like halfway thru the semester so you play catch up the whole time. i stopped going to this horrible class and took the F.
I went to every class, and read every book, I still ended up with a C, she does not respect her students, she thinks that her class is the only class in the school. She does make the class interesting with her humer, but thats about it.
I thought this class was horrible. Although she can be funny sometimes, she assigns too much reading too fast. We had to read two novels in a week more than once. Quizzes and exams were multiple choice and the homework are easy grades. But if you're not a reader, forget it.
My first C in school altogether was in this class. Her personality is great, but she expects you not to have a life; or even other classes, for that matter. no possible way to read 2 400 page books in one week, unless you are part-time. She wouldn't even tell my class exactly what was on the final. She said "everything". So make your own judgment.

She can be wicked and a tyrant to her students, especially if you are having trouble in this course. I've seen her make students cry in front of the class just because they didn't understand something.
Honestly, taking this class was the worst decision I could have made. She doesn't help you at all, and if you have any problems whatsoever, she only tells you 'it's your fault'. The first day of class seemed promising, but as the semester went on, I just can't get over how RUDE and UNHELPFUL she is. Her quizzes (oh, so many of them) are really pointless and bias to her own views. I think if she really paid attention to how WE students feel, then maybe more people would come to class. Overall, don't take her!
She wants to see everyone fail. She puts opinion questions on multiple choice tests, and if you don't have the same opinion as her you get the question wrong. She won't ever help you, or if she tries to she just makes you feel stupid. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS OR ANY CLASS WITH HER.

She certainly picks her favorites and those people will SOAR through the class. I happened to be a favorite of hers, no idea why, and ended up with a B, even though I had made C's on everything. Hers is the only English class I ever received a B in, I always made A's. Seems to enjoy embarrassing people and is fairly full of herself. Not recommended
Requires you to read entire books in 2-3 days. Has quizzes daily, and will that there might be more than one answer when it's MULTIPLE choice (there should only be one right answer!
