Prof Hill is a very kind and caring professor. She is always willing to help and will work with you if you are struggling, you just have to ask for it. Chemistry is hard in general, but if you stay on top of the homework, utilize OWL, go to class, and reach out for help if needed, you'll be fine!
She is a great teacher! Definitely there for her students and loves to help and answer any questions you can. REALLY important to read the book and do the practice problems! I would take her again in heart beat.
Basically just reads the PowerPoint's. Don't really need to read the book, because the PowerPoint's are the book. I wouldn't have taken the class, of chemistry wasn't my major. Tests are much harder than the class.
Dr. Hill is an amazing woman. She is helpful and will try her best to get you to understand the material. I stress practicing the math problems; that's where I lost most of my points on exams. Expect half of every exam to be based on the math problems. If you understand the material then you will be able to answer standard multiple choice questions
Had her for Chem I & Chem II; Nice lady, but in chem I her teaching approach is pretty irrelevant since the material is straight-forward. Chem II can be a little rough having her as a professor. Hold onto your book and do the OWL online questions because they're the tools that are really going to help you through the course. Lots of homework.
She reads off the powerpoints which are essentially the text. There's a lot of work for this class, sometimes overwhelming between all the book work, quizzes, and labs due within the week. Exams are very hard, you must study and understand how to do problems. Very tough course but manageable if you stay on top of things.
Dr. Hill will definitely go through examples on slides (or written out if asked) but seemed like she didn't always understand the questions we students asked her. Exams are mostly based off of calculations and I rarely finished on time(she lets you stay after if possible tho, Im bad at math). OWL helps. Homework/book problems similar to examdoable
I feel her class would be better if she didn't read right from the slides, which she sometimes tends to rush through. Doing the homework is necessary if you want to have any chance at passing the tests, which are long. On the upside, her labs are super easy and do not require a full writeup.
Some of her lectures are poor, they confused me more even though I took an honors chem course in high school. IF you did the same as me in high school, expect this class to be fairly easy. Just do the homework and study for the tests. Her quizzes were online, fairly annoying at times tho. Lab days are fun and simple; straight to the point.
She honestly doesn't know how to make sure students understand chemistry. She just gives long lectures, tough exams with tough grades. She never made sense to me. Had to do study with my friends all semester to pass.
Im not a science major, but I needed this class for engineering and I found this class to be fairly straightforward. She's pretty good with getting you to understand the material with the exception of a few topics where I feel she could not have explained them worse. You def need to study but if your willing to put in the work, you should be fine
Dr. Hill is a good professor. She is always there to help you but only if you ask for it. The labs are easy with no formal lab report. Lectures are long and can be boring because of class size. . Homework is not graded but helps you to understand material that are on exams. Only get textbook if you are bad at chemistry.
If you already have trouble with chemistry, this class will be a challenge. She rushes through lectures and expects you to understand material the first time. USE YOUR BOOK and study on your own and with friends and you'll get by but you're gonna need to work for it. Nice lady, bad teacher
Nice lady. Minus the fact she stands in front of the class writing on a small white board that no one can see skipping half the steps so your left confused. Prepare to teach yourself. Labs are easy and no lab reports. She DOES NOT curve regardless of how bad you do!! If your good at chemistry take her.
She tries too hard to seem like a good professor. Her lectures are simply rewriting and doing sample problems from the textbook. Sometimes she confuses herself and the students. I guarantee you will get frustrated at the lack of explanation. Labs take forever because she takes too long to explain what to do. Easy grader. Show up, live off textbook.
rushes everything and is never clear when going over problems. expect to teach yourself everything
She was a decent teacher for Chem 1127. However in 1128 the topics cover a lot of stuff and she doesn't explain them well enough to understand. She rushes through powerpoints and gives hard exams. When asking a simple question, she answers in a condescending tone or says she explained it already. I don't recommend taking her class.
She rushes through lecture material and expects students to already know a lot of material that she is supposed to teach. Tests basically make up your whole grade and she grades tough. Be prepared to teach yourself.
350 characters is not enough space to describe how awful this class was.
I have to retake chem because of her. Don't take her ! Lectures are long and boring I never learned anything and never finished writing problems down because her handwriting was terrible and she went way too fast. I had to teach myself everything I know.
She should have never became a teacher.
She cant teach, the book is ur savior and online videos. make friends in the class its the only way youll pass. lab is good, not with her tho. she rushes lectures, writes sloppy, is disorganized and its just a god damn mess. if u can take it at another regional campus, if not buckle up. despite all this, shes a cool person outside class.
This class was the single class I dreaded. She basically just reads off powerpoints (with the odd problem on the board), her tests are super stressful, and she's not really good at teaching. However, homework is optional and her grading criteria is very flexible. If you hate studying, you're gonna have a terrible time; I'd recommend someone else.
I dropped out of this class halfway through the semester. She responds to your questions as if you are dumb and barely answers what you're looking for. I always ended up so confused and had to teach myself everything. Don't miss class! You will get so confused and lost. Not worth it, her lab partner was unhelpful and didn't know anything about chem
Chemistry is a hard course to teach and to learn. You can't go to lecture and expect to get a good grade. You have to read the textbook, go to every class, watch online videos, do the hw, etc. Anything to reinforce the topics in covered in class. Hill is so sweet and very supportive and understanding. I would recommend taking Chem with her!!
This is the class you have to put a lot of outside work into. You will leave lecture more confused than when you came in. I do well by doing most of the practice problems in the textbook and reading from it. She gives examples is class but goes quickly through them as if you know this subject. Not a tough grader but exams are tough.
I absolutely LOVED Dr. Hill! She makes her class interesting and it is clear that she is very passionate about the subject at hand. She is always willing to help those that put in the effort. Granted chemistry is not an easy course but if you do your work and keep up with the class/ go to her for extra help she WILL help you in any way she can!
this class depends a lot on exam grades. The exams are very difficult to prepare for. good luck. -you will need it
Sandra is a very nice lady. She cares about her students although many do not realize how much work STEM courses are. If you do the homework and quizzes (online) and understand them you will succeed without a problem. If you expect to do no HW and pass this class you will not. Lectures can be boring though the examples she gives are like the exams
Granted I didn't fail this class, but I found it extremely difficult to pass with a decent grade. Just doing the homeworks and reading the powerpoints/textbook didn't do much to prepare us for exams. A lot of people in my class failed and many people dropped because they couldn't handle it. Too difficult for just an introductory course.
Its unnecessarily difficult. Shes a horrible professor! Rushes around everywhere, its all PowerPoints & if she does write stuff out she doesnt take the time to explain it & its all jumbled up together with everything else. She really never gives extra credit & the exam averages are never higher than 60. Youll have to teach yourself everything!
It's like she tries to make this course unnecessarily difficult for an entry level chemistry course. She is a horrible professor and terrible at teaching the topics. She will move extremely fast, and makes you feel dumb when asking a question. She does not provide much assistance during labs either. Do NOT take this class with her.
I took this first semester. Lecture is very dry and boring. Prof is very caring and clear about what is expected of you. PAY ATTENTION, there are things that are important but is merely brushed over in class. Two words, Chegg Study. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. The questions are from other books, chegg has answered almost all of them. Helps with exams a ton.
You will need to do good on the quizzes because the exam is impossible
All of my classmates disliked her. Personally, I don't think she's the best professor but she's not the worst either. Everyone is just bound to think she's bad because Chemistry is hard! She gives a lot of partial credit on tests. Be prepared to teach yourself some of the key concepts if you don't understand the way she teaches things.
Okay, She is a clear example of a good person but a bad teacher. She goes through every example way to fast for majority of students to keep up so u have to spend 3 times the amount of time reading the chicken scratch she wrote on the board. In lab, she was a gem, but those lectures are an absolute mess. I really like chemistry but this wasnt it
I took this freshman year while I was also traveling to Storrs campus to take classes. Doctor Hill is very dedicated to making the class as efficient and manageable as possible. If you think you can do STEM classes at UConn and not do homework, study, take adequate notes, and review properly you fail no matter who teaches the course. Work harder.
Do yourself a favor and do not take this class with her. Chemistry is already a hard subject to begin with and with her teaching you, it does not get any worse. She rushes through problems on the board and acts like you will understand everything. If you ask a question she makes you feel stupid or she avoids/ is rude. impossible to contact.
Sandra Hill is a terrible professor. She goes over contents of the current lecture too quickly along with glancing over important information. Her lectures are long and boring as well with her scribbling things on the board attempting to "teach". Her powerpoints in class DO NOT help on exams, save yourself the torture and take another professor.
Dr. Hill is a horrible professor. I took this class with her freshman year. I was already not good at Chemistry and I didn't learn anything in her class. She didn't clearly explain topics and "scribbled" notes on the board in illegible writing. The powerpoints were very lengthy and never helped with quizzes or exams. Don't take this class with her.
Want a lower GPA, ever want to see how it is to teach yourself, wanna cry yourself to sleep because of an exam, WELL THIS IS THE CLASS FOR YOU!
In order to save yourself future frustration, money but most of all your time, avoid this class at all cost. If you are interested in truly learning the basics of chemistry, this class isn't it. Dr. Hill is one of the most monotonous professors out there who is unable to communicate scientific information. She is lackluster in her teaching method
If you are a incoming freshman whatever you do stay away from this professor. The tests never average above an 75 and according to her the norm is typically in the 60s. Save your time and money and do not take this class. The homework is the most frustrating thing in the world and her lectures will litterally put you to sleep if you are tierd.
Dr. Hill's slides are kind of boring, and you don't really need to read the textbook. Try to have the online HW done well before the exams. If you do her worksheets and online HW you're fine. The labs are not difficult, and if you miss one it really affects your grade. If you have taken chem in HS, then you're familiar w/ material until 1st exam.
Dr. Hill is such a sweet lady she always cracked jokes with me during lectures and always kept a smile on my face! I failed her class my first time taking due to my own personal problems and the 2nd time I retook it with her she was SUPER encouraging and helped me get back on my feet. For this class you dont really need a book just take notes!
The entirety of lectures were powerpoints and a few examples. A lot of classmates struggled as it was fast paced and a lot of information to take in at once. Exams were a bit on the difficult side. There were chances for extra credit for all three exams and final. Knewton Alta wasn't horrible but was tedious.
Terrible, period.
Honestly might be the worst professor Ive ever had. She doesnt know how to teach, and literally bombards you with a bunch of work and you basically have to teach it all to yourself.
Honestly, Dr. Hill is an amazing professor, sure the exams are hard and I didn't get away with an A, yet as a Chem major and a person who is getting into Stem, this class surely makes me a better student and prepares me to tackle more difficult classes within the future. Dr. hill is also very accessible outside of class, willing to always help!
To be honest, I was not a big fan of the class. The only reason I got an A is because I took AP Chem. The lectures weren't useful and I never paid attention. Knewton Alta did help. She's not a good teacher but I feel like she tries. If you're not good in chemistry don't take her.
Lectures are rushed and useless. Don't need to show up for class unless its for participation points. Labs are fun, but i suggest you make a friend so you can figure things out together. She is VERY lenient with grading though. If you're not familar with chem already, wait spring and take it with Stein. AWFUL class but shes a good person.
Dr. Hill genuinely cares about the subject & her students. Elements of hybrid course during COVID: 2 weekly in-person lectures + 1 online one (all recorded), weekly Chem101 quizzes (helpful!), in-person lab w/Labflow assignments and 3 hard exams + final. Best bet: read the textbook BEFORE class & bring ppts to take notes on during lecture!
Worst professor you could ever take, does NOT teach, people fail every exam, will leave you to the wolves, organic chem is easier than Hill's class, she was on probation in the past and should be again, if you can take chem1127 and 1128 at storrs or another university.
Dr. Hill is a wonderful person but she is not well suited to teach intro gen chem. If you are willing to teach yourself, take her class. Lab was helpful, lecture was extremely disorganized. Hybrid format: constant posting of online lectures (w/o notice), math heavy in class, labs, online exams in lab (most fail so more weight given to quiz/HW/lab).
Sandra Hill talks too much and tries to go over at least 3 chapters in one lecture. She tries to be relatable and fails. She also jumps from chapter to chapter and it does not make sense because she doesn't explain information and does not answer questions. Overall she is not someone I would ever recommend to anyone for a course.
The lectures weren't helpful for learning, I only took notes to stay awake in class. I've learned more from Chem101 and Knewton Alta than from her teaching. Practicing the material by yourself would be the most helpful. Don't bother reading the online textbook, unless you will be able to not fall asleep and actually retain the information from it.
This professor really is awful. Try not to take any of her classes as she is a horrible teacher and is practically unreachable.
DO NOT take this class. If you need to take chem for your major, either wait until you get to Storrs, take it over the summer, or take it at a community college. If you still insist on taking this class with Professor Hill, make sure you're either familiar with chemistry or be good at teaching yourself. She's a nice person, bad teacher.
She lectures as if we're already pros at chem. Make sure to go over the material before coming to class bc she won't teach you anything. She does give extra credits. You really have to put some work into this class and you will do most of the learning yourself. She seems like a nice person but she needs to step it up a bit.
I fought back tears in this class
Professor is clearly passionate about chemistry, but her teaching methods are not the most helpful. Lectures were disorganized and boring. Labs were hit or miss, sometimes insanely frustrating with no guidance, and other times quick and easy. Lab topics of the week did not match lecture topics, which made it more confusing overall.
Worst Professor I have ever had
Terrible instructor. Her lectures are mostly gibberish and the stuff she writes down is chicken scratch.
The lectures up to the first two exams were pretty good. Once we got into stoichiometry and stuff after that it became very difficult to understand the course material. She will go all around the room and write problems down that are hard to see unless you follow her around. Can't imagine taking her for 1128Q where it's all stoichiometry based.
Don't get me wrong she is a nice person, but all she does is read of the slide and copy down what the slide says on the whiteboard rather than teaching. Persoanlly im im surprised I got such a decent grade because this class was dreadful. If you have no choice but to take this class then your better off teaching yourselves.
Not sure why there are so many negative reviews, I had Sandra for a summer session and she was very nice and always willing to help. Chemistry isn't an easy subject but this content was definitely manageable if you focused enough, and lots of the grading was based on online assignments and quizzes where you had multiple attempts
Very monotone voice and basically no energy leading to incredibly boring lectures.I just feel like in addition to this just being an especially hard course, she just doesn't offer any type of help.I thought the people below me were joking but I genuinely did fight back tears in this class because of how lost I was sometimes. If you must take it, gl
Well, all I have to say is that you will have to meet her half way. She isn't a terrible professor but her teaching style isn't the best. She does give you extra credit and different ways to passing her class. You will probably have to spend a lot of time outside the classroom either reteaching yourself the material or enforcing it.
Great professor . Professor Hill is caring and very helpful . You just need to communicate your needs to her. She will listen and explain. She has a lot of office hour offerings. You will pass if you show up to lecture , labs and review times. Plus taking notes and reading the text book will help completely.
She can be a little tough if you ask for extension of late assignment, but overall always helps. Review session before every exam, You will see a lot of questions on exams that are very similar to aktive quizzes questions. For 1128 she gives tons xtra credit to improve class average, so many kids in my class had like 10/100 LOL.
she loves chemistry but is not the best teacher. Lectures are boring and highly disorganised. she writes all over the board but if you sit in the back you can't see anything. She is available during her office hours which are helpful. Personally I learned more in labs than lecture.
As a previous AP Chem student, this teacher did a bad job explaining concepts and the math behind them. I oftentimes used the methods I learned from the AP class or searched it up to quickly relearn it. The weekly lab quizzes can either be your best friend or the reason why you fail this class, be careful if you struggle to teach yourself.
So I had Dr. Hill for 1127Q. She is really a good professor. Her lectures are heavy but then again this is a stem class. She doesn't give quizzes in lecture but in lab, there's quizzes, which aren't bad. The quizzes can be from 4-10 questions, and she gives hw and practice quizzes to prepare you for the quizzes. Very understanding and helpful too.
Dr. Hill is not a bad professor. This is a lecture-heavy course that has lots of notes but are accessible online too. She usually gives examples and small class work to do before or after class. There are no quizzes in lecture; lab there is. She tries to lighten the class with some jokes too on the side. If you need help, she will also help you.
Professor Hill's class was extremely easy. There was weekly online HW on Aktiv, which was very self-explanatory and very easy to navigate. Along with this, there were weekly lecture quizzes before your lab. As long as you study a decent amount and use the practice quizzes given days before, then you should ace this class. Not a good lecturer though
She's nice but a horrible teacher. Her lectures are so unorganized, she goes through 20+ slides per lecture and gives you 30 seconds to copy each down and reads off the slides. She writes all over the board it's not legible and never explains what she's writing. There are weekly assignments and NEVER puts anything in the gradebook.
She is a very nice person overall but her teaching skills aren't together. It is very fast paced and very unorganized. We will be on one chapter but she will skip like 8 slides at a time and then go back to it on a future date. Then when she writes on the board it is all over the place and very unorganized. The quizzes in lab are very difficult.
She is not the best lecturer but even if you don't pay attention and go over slides after, you will be fine. Final is only 15% of grade and the rest of the assignments/weekly quizzes are so straightforward and easy A's. Gives practice quizzes that are identical to each weekly quiz, just the numbers in the problems are different. No reason to fail.
Dr Hill can be a kind understanding person and personally I liked her. I just couldn't stand her teaching style. You had to have time to teach yourself the material outside of class and if you couldn't then you were screwed. The Aktiv quizzes weighed the most on your grade. Some extra credit opportunities but hard to recover. Can't see full grade.
Very hard class, I think she's very smart which is the problem. She tends to cram information and connect dots in her head out loud creating a lot of confusion. Intro chemistry class but presents information like you've been taking it for 10 years
Keep up w/ topics & you'll be good, weekly quizzes in lab are identical to practice quizzes. Lectures aren't good, you could teach yourself tbh. Hard to see the board & her writing is somewhat illegible. She reads slides & does examples, but really fast. Good communication & willing to help, just not during lecture bc she goes through lots of info.
monotone professor and she writes literal chicken scratch on the board. i recommend anyone else but her she cannot teach at all. I passed but I know a solid 30 other people had to retake this class. GOODLUCK if you have her!
Professor Hill is amazing! She is always willing to help, go to her office hours and reach out and she will help you with topics that seem unclear. I would recommend to make the Aktiv Quiz your best friend she gives practice quizzes that are very similar to what you will get on the actual Quiz. Sit towards the front of class so you can take notes!
