Great Prof. Always helpful and wants her students to do well. Lots of information, but an interesting class
An educator extrodinaire!! Very organized and interested in the material. Tough material and fair exams. I wish all profs were this keen about education.
Very nice lady, and very intelligent - and she can actually teach! (not always true for profs at UVIc)
Amazing! She's probably the most organized professor I've ever had. She'll bend over backwards to ensure that you know the material before writing the exam.
She would scare all the students in the class to make us feel that no matter how hard we try in the subject, our writing is never enough..
A great prof!! She's super organized, and puts in tons of effort to help the class do well on tests.
Don't take this class! The E homework was ridiculous and not a good representation of the course material. Don't buy the workbook. It's useless!
I didn't want to take the class, but I had too. And now, I am glad I did. Sandra is a great teacher - super prepared, likes interaction, encourages questions (even from the annoying people) and altogether awesome. Be sure to study the notes she provides for the tests.
Great teacher, very organized and clear. Will answer questions without making your feel stupid and is approachable and helpful. I didn't want to take this course but I had to, and now I'm glad I did. Final exam was a bit insane though.
She asks really ****ing retarded questions and then lets the class sit in silence for a really long time before giving us the answer (which everyone knows but is too lazy to call out). She also says "okay" "yup" "mmhmm" or the like after every single ****ing sentence that comes out of her mouth. AHHHH!!!!
One of the most organized and helpful teachers out there. Enthusiastic and truly wants everyone to do well.
If you're not doing well in the class, she has NO compassion for you, no matter what your reason is!!!! She's a robot -zero consideration for her students...unless you have an A!
She was indeed very organized with her powerpoint presentations and her e-homework and webct, but everything about her bothered me and I couldn't stand going to class. She asks dumb questions that everyone knew the answers to. This class was actually harder than my LING 203 or 396 classes.
Class materials are not 100% related to the tests. Talking to her is not helpful for the tests.
She does say okay a lot, and does ask stupid questions. We spent an entire day analyzing "The dog ate the cookies" But compared to other teachers, she provides excellent power points, webCT support and study aids. She doesnt put the PPs up in advance though, and then gets mad when everyone is copying down the notes in class.
The prof is very organized and very thorough. She says OK alot, which is a little irritating, and asks questions alot and will not move on or give the answer until someone finally gets it right. I often wished she would just tell us the answer so we could write it down and move on. The class is definitely slow-moving and dull, but still informative
Lots of examples. Helpful when having trouble
Sandra was an awesome prof. As long as you go to classes and take down the notes (she doesn't post them), you'll do awesome. She's interesting and one of those profs who has passion for what she's teaching. Great prof, and as long as you do the work it's an easy course.
She knows what she is talking about and really has her act together. It was quite a good class and the tests were fair.
She was great! She was super organized and made learning fun.
Very organized, good if you are interested in the material and want to go on in linguistics. I really disliked her demeanor. Whenever a question was asked it was as if she wanted to prove that student wrong or make them look dumb for asking. I went to see her outside of class and she was rude and didn't seem to want to help me. Left a sour taste.
Kirkham is probably the best first year prof I had. Amazingly organized, crystal clear delivery, and knew the material very well. She isn't bubbly cheerful or anything, but is very professional and understanding. If you want Linguistics explained well look for her. Read and do the hmwk and the tests will be easy. We're priviledged to have her.
Wow. One of the easiest A+'s I've ever gotten. Her teaching is super clear, and is in fact sometimes so clear and detailed that it is boring because she spends too long on stuff. The e-homework was super easy, as were the tests, and she gave 8% participation. I barely had to try to get my A+, yet I still feel like I learned stuff. Good prof.
AMAZING PROF! Seriously, best prof I've ever had at UVIC. Her blackboard page is so organized and there are so many resources to help you study for the tests. Her lectures are fun, interactive, she plays games and does participation activities. She is such a nice lady and very helpful!
I love this prof. I had so much fun in 100a I am sorry that I didn't take it sooner. The class activities often feel like fun puzzle games. She's very clear about what she expects, and gives more supplementary help material than any other teacher I've had. Study terms/definitions, and know the material well. Don't slack off.
Excellent teacher
Incredibly clear and very friendly. A fun class. You must attend ever class though because you cover lots of ground in one hour. Very interesting. However, really does mess with your spelling
very boring class. Sandra is sometimes unbearably annoying: poses open ended ridiculous questions to the class and sits in silence as no one answers (this can get really bad) , has a number of catch phrases (sandra-isms), over uses Web CT, and unable to explain concepts in more than one way.
Horribly annoying. Treats her students like they are in grade 2, and does not properly listen to or answer questions and poses questions that make no sense. Not the worst teacher, but avoid her and her "Right, M'kay"'s if you can. Try counting how many times she says: Right, M'Kay - you'll go mental.
I feel sorry for the anthro students who got her as their first linguistics prof. She will ask rhetorical or excessively simple questions and then REFUSE to move on until they are answered. Completing large project for this class was like taking a whole other class, but was only worth approx 15% overall. Useless. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES!
I have had her for two classes now and I have promised myself to try and never have her again. She is very unclear about requirements for exams, and marks things wrong when most profs would give half marks. Her explanations are unclear. While I normally keep a good average, her classes bring my gpa down. Class attendance was extremely low.
I found her lectures a bit dull, but I ended up learning a lot in the class. I did have to review the material a lot on my own and attending class was mandatory! I found her annoying at times (often deferred questions) but her e-hw was helpful and her lecture q's online. Marking was decently fair.
Very clear lectures in a class I found surprisingly hard because oft he amount of stuff to memorize.
Throws info @u too fast and too much. Hard to get clear answers. She had hard time understanding students as well. Very motivated, energetic. TA's- useless. Watch out test markings! Could be many mistakes! To do well, attend every class and participate as much as yo can! It's possible, interesting and challenging class!
I found her to be an extremely well organized and helpful prof. She always laid out concepts well, though sometimes answered questions with an irksome air of superiority. I absolutely loved her and her class though. Reccommend!
Doesnt prepare you at all for her incomprehensible tests. Often you have to sit there just trying to figure out what she meant to say in lectures and tests. Doesnt answer your questions, just repeats what she already said that confused you in the first place. I will never take a class with this prof again.
Sandra is not a very good teacher in general. I hate to be rude but I will NEVER take a class with her again, I had the misfortune of having two courses with her this semester and she honestly made me lose my love for linguistics! Mandatory attendance but she is so dry you wont want to be there. Group work...everyday! plus she leaves you unprepared
A great TEACHER! Many profs at Uvic know their subject but dont have a clue how to teach- Sandra knows both! Anyone complaining on here that she makes you "do group work" or "attend class regularly" doesnt understand how effective teaching and learning works. I would recommend this class to anyone interested in Linguistics(much better than Nyvlek)
She was great, always willing to explain more but gave very clear lectures. Yes, she moved fast through the slides, but her classes were engaging and she posted ample material help online - practice questions, sample quizzes, lecture questions, etc. Totally recommend her.
Great prof and very knowledgeable. She's passionate about linguistics and wants to pass on that passion to her students. People that are complaining on here just don't have the mental capacity to grasp a linguistic paradigm. I recommend if you're capable of such a task.
Excellent prof. Very organized, and explains concepts clearly (even to us non-Linguistics students). Definitely have to attend class to do well, but she makes them interesting. Textbooks are unfortunately pricey, but necessary. Have taken my only two Linguistics classes with her, and would happily come back for a third.
Very hard marker, MUST go to class, as her powerpoints only have a few words on them and she elaborates much more. Guidelines for assignments pretty unclear/ambiguous. I would take her class for a more technical Ling, but do not recommend for 397
worst prof ever! Never post notes online. In-class PPTs are hard to copy cause she leaves all the lights on and change it really fast. Lots of definitions in the tests with no early notice. She spend 20 min on homework each class and ALWAYS assign hw after the bell.
Worst prof ever! She was not helpful at all. Her PPTs were hard to see because the font size are small and she used colors like yellow on them and she never turned the lights off which made it even harder to see! And she never post the notes online. Spent half of the class on homeworks and never ended classes on time! Exams were hard!
I have had her in 100A and in 361 and I think that she is a great prof, looks at concepts from different points of view and really gets the class thinking about the material. Her tests are hard but she is always willing to help you
She is the reason I'm a Ling Major! I loved her, she made all the concepts really clear and kept us engaged. Write down the slides! She doesn't post them. Tests were all really fair, treat quizzes like midterms.
This class had no prereqs, but it became sharply clear that if you wanted to get a good mark, you needed to have a background in Linguistics. The midterm was eight pages in 50 minutes, and required you to have comprehensive knowledge of ANYTHING she mentioned in class. Can't help but feel her expectations were way too high for a month-long course.
I am surprised by some of the negative ratings here. She's a great prof and is always willing to answer questions. My only complaint would be that she goes through ppt slides a bit too fast. If you are not completely stupid, show up to class, and take notes you will get a good grade. The textbook is not necessary (although helpful for ling majors).
Would be a great bird course, except attendance is almost mandatory due to random 'participation' activities. If nobody bothers to answer her trivial questions she poses, prepare for 5 minutes of pointless 'group discussion'. Odd teaching methodology but material is very simple and actually pretty interesting. Needs some Halls...
Such a good teacher, she is very helpful and her class is very clear. The only weakness is ,the content is a little bit hard and the quiz is hard.
Although the class was not an easy one, she is a really great prof. My only complaint is that she doesn't really give straight answer to questions. That said I did learned a lot, I really like that the midterm was written twice: once on your own and once in a group. The grading is very fair, and she seems like she likes her job. I would recommend!
I really like Sandra, the class was REALLY fun compared to other linguistics classes I have taken. Her coursespaces is top notch, as are all of her technological contributions to the course. She is good for answering questions in class but when it comes to assignments she can become cryptic and guarded. I would recommend, but be ready to work!
This was super fun! I sincerely enjoyed this class! Would recommend to take 200 with Sandra.
Sandra was great. She has taught two of my classes (290 & 200) both were interesting and challenging in their own respects. The only issue I had was her reluctance to distribute her slides or certain documents for printing due to copy-write issues. I get that it is becoming a paperless world but sometimes its nice to have a hard copy of the slides.
Group project that was only worth 20 percent but took up the entire semester. Walked around questions asked and didn't have a straight forward answer for anything. Good linguistics prof but not effective for an anthropology linguistics course.
Sandra seems nice. She just has a tendency to treat her class like they're in grade 3. Even handing papers back was like a disruptive throwback to grade school. She would tell us to get into groups, then we had to line up alphabetically, THEN she would hand out our tests. I also felt that she marked tests/HW unfairly. DON'T even miss one class.
Massive workload, with things weighted very oddly and unfairly. lectures were interesting, but missing even a couple will bring down your grade due to the complete inability to get the information you missed. Not very clear answers to questions. The textbook was supposedly mandatory but never used it once. Good LING course for the ANTH requirement
She often just regurgitates the textbook. When asked a question, she will paraphrase what she just said and it won't make an improvement to your understanding. She does NOT post her slides online/gets upset if you try to take a photo. Goes through the slides quickly, so you will miss notes. Notes are unorganized.
If you pay attention to her lectures and do the assigned readings, the class is quite enjoyable and easy. The lectures are not posted but I found if i missed some of the content, the textbook filled in the gaps.
She is very helpful, but really tough grader.
Very organized but she is a very tough grader. Her office hours are not helpful at all.
Prof Sandra is really passionate in linguistics. Her class is always full of laughs. To get a good grade, listen carefully in class and DO YOUR HOMEWORK!
I'm very surprised at all the negative comments on here. She makes you love linguistics and makes you want to take another ling class. She was really nice and her class was very engaging and interesting. I used the textbook quite a bit, I'd definetly recommend buying it. The only criticism would be that she goes through her slides pretty quickly.
I've had Sandra for 100A, but enjoyed her much more for this class. Grading was based off of coursespaces assignments and midterms, that were fair in questions and based off of what we learned in class. Missing class isn't an option as she doesn't put her lecture up, other than a few random slides. Overall though, a relatively easy class.
Sandra is pedantic and lacking in self-awareness. Her lectures are miserable because she just regurgitates the textbook (and yet attendance is mandatory). She teaches as though she holds all the knowledge and she believes herself gracious when she shares it with her students.
Has very confusing quizzes (that she obviously makes herself) every week and only gives you 10 minutes and then snatches the paper from you as you are writing. Then complains to the class that some of the quizzes were incomplete and we should try harder. Let alone it takes you a good five minutes to figure out what she is asking for the quiz.
Her grading for the "quizzes" is very inconsistent and nitpicky. If you don't use the exact terms she is looking for expect to receive a 0/4 on a question, regardless of whether or not you explain your answer. Make sure you write down what she says in class, the slides just regurgitate the textbook
I really enjoyed this class and she made me appreciate linguistics. she further helped me understand what I was being taught in my other linguistics class. You need to attend the classes as much of what she tests you on is spoken about or taught in her lectures.
I've had sandra for many classes, and it's always a chore. She's passionate about linguistics, but unwilling to share information, despite that it's her only job. When asked a question, she often repeats the thing that confused you in the first place. she also makes you get into groups and discuss topics she hasnt taught yet, waste of class time
10/10 would take another course with Sandra. She is very kind and approachable. The content and her lectures are interesting.
She is the SWEETEST. You can tell she is passionate about the subject. Make sure to do the study guide and read the textbook and you'll do great. Her PowerPoints/lectures could use a bit of work, they are a bit unclear. Exams are online though so they are pretty straightforward. I mostly used the study guide to learn the material.
I loved Sandra's class. Clear rubric and criteria, interesting and well-explained content, and a lovely, knowledgable prof who genuinely cares about her students. The amount of info feels overwhelming, but if you do what she asks and ask for help when you need it, you will excel. Such a great course and prof, with help at every turn.
Teaching ability lacks in every aspect. When asked questions she'll not make an attempt to understand & leave the questions unanswered. Slides hold little info; she often repeats what's said in the textbook & she doesn't like questions. She tells us we don't need to learn something, not teach it to us & then include it on the quizzes. Ridiculous.
this is a class about sign language, she has been teaching it for at least a decade, and she's never bothered to learn the bare minimum amount of sign language. There's no prereqs but goodluck if you haven't taken ling100a. her quizzes are filled with trick questions and graded as though we are experts in linguistics, but the class has no prereqs??
Dr. Kirkham is clearly passionate about linguistics but I found her lectures often made concepts much harder to learn than necessary. No feedback was provided on either midterm exam or any of the online assignments beyond a percentage, which made it difficult to know how to improve and was quite discouraging.
At times the lectures made concepts from the textbook easier to grasp but Sandra showed total disrespect for those who needed clarification. She makes you feel stupid for asking questions and then refuses to actually answer them, even outside class time. In-class activities were often unnecessary and discriminatory towards ESL or disabled students.
Dr. Kirkham has an accessibility and one test fits all problem. I have to wonder how she can teach courses pertaining to ASL when she herself doesn't know the language/culture and has an... attitude towards ASL users and deaf individuals.
Clearly very passionate about what she teaches, but unable to provide clarification when asked questions during lectures.
Lecture content is terribly organized and information is spread out everywhere. Basically a teach yourself class as lectures are quiet pointless but she checks attendance. Her test outlines are so broad they are no help what so ever. If you ask questions in class she basically just repeats the question and leaves you still confused.
Sandra is a level-headed professor who is on top of the large amount of content learned in 100A and B. She responds to emails in a timely fashion, and always answered questions in an informed and helpful manner. Information is covered quickly in class, but she times it well with assigned textbook readings. Group study is encouraged!
I understand why UVic's LING department is seeing the lowest numbers ever these past few years, and why UVic sent out a survey asking students if 200 level courses should be dropped from the major, as Sandra's class's a prereq for most 300-400 level LING classes. She didn't schedule tests and qizzes with CAL, and wouldn't offer any alternatives.
Does not explain concepts in class. Gives you homework on stuff we haven't learnt yet and feedback provides no clarification. A teach yourself class with a lot of information that is not clearly understood. You do not know what you are doing wrong and your written answers have to be almost word for word from what she wants or else its wrong.
If you're considering doing the Ling program here, all I have to say is run. Her lecturing style (quiet, never sticks to her assigned topic of the day) and her lecture slides are lacking greatly in effort and skill. Class isn't even worth attending, but she checks attendance. READ THE TEXTBOOK because you're basically on your own out here.
She made me fall in love with phonology. Very logical, methodical, and fare - impeccably organized, she looks for specific things, and grades accordingly. Read her slides, (this is what's on her tests) if there's any concept on the slides you don't understand - work with the material until you do. In tests, copy her slides verbatim!!
Sandra's tough but she knows what she's talking about. Expects a LOT from you her students and assigns a lot of work but you'll finish the class knowing a whole lot more than you did before. If you need this course, plan for it to be a heavier one. Her lectures can get messy but she keeps it interactive and interesting.
o.m.g. i love sandra's structure and attention to detail of the class. don't be fooled: it is hard and grueling for a first year course, comparable to a bio or chem class, but as long as you read the textbook and practice consistently you'll be fine! Also definitely get a group of study buddies to review notes and concepts in case you miss class
Sandra has a very interesting but dull way of teaching. She reads off her slides in lectures and isnt very engaging. Her lectures are pretty boring and require a lot of note taking. She compares Linguistics to Math a lot which gets annoying after a while. I would personally not take one of her classes again in the future.
She did not come off as particularly knowledgeable during lectures and the online system was hard to navigate.
Sandra is a nice person but not a very good prof imo. She over explains things, when the textbook will give you a straight answer. Her class is very test heavy, so make sure you know your terminology. If you are with CAL and need extra time make sure you talk with them because she gives everyone 1.5 time which worked out to 2mins per question.
I have had minimal positive interactions with her here, she is unwilling to help students and her class is not a positive space. Questions are rarely answered other than "did you read the bright space" or "think about it a little more". She is uneducated in ASL and provides incorrect information, her teaching this class was a mistake.
Dr Kirkham knows the material well and her lectures are very interesting. The assignments and midterms can be squished together in certain weeks, but it's manageable. Put the work in and you'll do fine--don't skip class and do the readings.
Too much material in the lectures. Doesn't seem to understand that this is introductory, since most students are not well-versed in linguistics. Heavy reference to math; teaches like a math course. Name-dops Noam Chomsky like he's department Chair. Overall, 100A is too distracting. Wouldn't recommend except to the most diehard linguistics majors.
Sandra is an interesting person. She seems sweet but is super stand-offish and unhelpful. Classes were confusing, and I had to teach myself most of the content. Also, way too demanding for a 100-course. I feel bad for anyone who has to take it after me... good luck guys...
Took this class as a "fun" elective, now it might be the reason I can't apply for co-op in my field next semester. Her lectures made the content even more confusing than it should've been. Often there were typos or contradictions in her online quizzes, making the work even more confusing. For an introductory course this was too intense.
Sandra is clearly very knowledgeable in her field; however, I do not think she should be teaching any sort of level 100 course. The class was super content-heavy, and somehow her explanations made concepts more complicated than they needed to be. She is also not helpful whatsoever if you ask her questions. Read the textbook - you're on your own.
Sandra pushes us to reach our own conclusions and think critically rather than just giving us answers, but it can sometimes be difficult in a no-prereq course! Gave us opportunities in class to discuss amongst peers. A few online assignments seemed irrelevant to tests and course material and info for those couldn't be found in textbook nor lecture.
