Very easy and nice, very important to go to class to ace tests
explains everything very well. almost too well. she is very helpful.
very fair professor, who explains the material very well
Subject of my dreams for years.
Really nice, tests aren't too hard. Moves at a nice enough pace, but she's pretty ditzy. Has a tendency to lean on the board and get covered in chalk by the end of the day. Doesnt get much easier than her
really helpful during the capstone...assigned way too much work
very efficient teacher. sometimes she is in the clouds. very understandable. gives too much information about her personal life sometimes. overall very easy class.
she makes everything very easy, and you can choose whether or not you want to take the final exam. also lets you drop a test grade.easy A if you show up and look over your notes before testa and quizzes
She has no attendence policy but it would be in your best interest to go to class. She is not very hard if you pay attention.
Very nice, lectures are clear and to the point, but she moves through material rapidly. I've found that I can either take notes OR follow along and understand what she's doing, but she doesn't really give enough time for both. Tests come from notes.
attend class and you'll sail right through
Explains the material well but goes really fast over the material. the tests are not too hard if you study the notes. a lot of note taking.
Great teacher! math is very difficult for me, but she explained it in a way that even i could understand. very friendly with students. definitely don't get behind or you're screwed.
Very helpful, hard tests but they get easy if u listen, ask questions, and come to class. Such a nice lady and a great class.. explains the material in a good way and will go over it as long as u need her to.
she is very nice and helpful-- tests kind of hard if you are bad at math, but i would recommend her
Very informative and caring of her students. She compensates for everyone in the room's learning styles and has very clear and concise lectures. If you struggle in math you should attend as much as possible. Prof. Shields is great
She is really a great teacher! She tries to explain lectures in every way possible. If you have a problem and talk to her she is very willing to help. No attendance policy, but if you have trouble with math, its not going to kill you to sit through it.
Great teacher...BUT MUST ATTEND CLASS.NO ATTENTDANCE POLICY BUT IF GO ITS SOO EASY... easy A if you attend class
I think that I could teach this class better than she does. Everything she says is redundant, and she gets confused doing her own problems. The class is really easy and there is no attendance policy, but she is a terrible teacher and doesnt know what shes talking about
Not a hard class but I sometimes find myself drifting to sleep in the back of the class. She does an ok job of teaching it. Would probably recommend over the other stats teachers.
she's a very nice lady, i need a slower math class cause i suck at math! s her class is slower! no attendence policy, but if you go you'll understand the material much better! i think shes a great prof!
It was okay. I pretty much taught myself but still came to class. Get some coffee before coming to class so you have something to keep you awake. Not a horrible math teacher...I definietly have had worse!
professor shields is awesome! i am horrible at math but she does an excellent job in explaining the material and is an easy a if you put a little bit of work into the class.
professor shields is a good teacher. she get confused sometimes, but she always corrects herself and helps you understand everything. she moves at a slow pace which is really good for people like me. if you're a math person though, you might want to go to someone who moves faster. very helpful.
Not a difficult class provided you can make yourself not only go.....but pay attention. She does a good job teaching it but you really have to try hard not to fall asleep listening to her. She is a good teacher if you are willing to put the effort in.
Although most of the time she is boring, all aspects of her are easy. She doesnt even teach by the book; she gives her own notes online and tells you exactly what will be on the test. She basically read us the final, telling us each type of question. I definitely reccommend her...makes math easy.
So if you want an A TAKE HER!!!! It coudn't be easier than that. She does 4 examples of each kind of problem, so you can't leave class without knowing what your doing. No attendance policy, but if you don't go to class you'll get lost, so show up and you'll do just fine!
First off do not waste your money on the book. I did not open it once and she teaches from her notes which can be found on the web also. She is a great teacher and will help you out a bunch if you need it. Take her!
She is a terrible teacher. I would not reccomend her. She is an extremely boring lady. She is not helpful at all. I learned everything on my own. Her class sucks!

She is an VERY easy teacher. Makes everything simple & explains exactly what to do before tests/quizzes. Notes are online, i never used my textbook, & she has no attendance policy. Take her if you want an A.
It was the easiest class I took all year. If you go to class and pay attention to the notes you'll do fine.
Super easy teacher. Take her if you want an easy A, but her class is so boring and she is not interested in helping you outside of class.
she's not great, if you're ok at math you can probably do fine, but she's hard to follow cause she always screws up what she's writing on the board. class goes so slow and if you don't pay attention the book is no help. but no attendance policy so there you go.
very nice, but not a good teacher. she confuses herself with her own problems, can't add, and her tests are harder than the material covered in class. She got one of her own questions on the final wrong! nice teacher, but if you don't want to be super confused, don't take this class.
AMAZING!She's very easy and willing to help, even though I never went to her office hours. She's very sweet and teaches what you need to know in the future (financial stuff). If you have the chance, take her class. It's east and she is the best! She's also a snazzy dresser, even though that doesn't matter. But, she does have cute clothes! TAKE HER!
I SUCK royally at math, but Professor Shields is amazing. On the first test, I got a high B, so that should definitely tell you something. She knows that 103 is the "easy" math class and acknowledges that all we want is the basics. She is amazing. Frequent quizzes and I think 3 tests and a final. Take her if you struggle with math.
You must pay attention to the notes extremely well. Test have much harder questions than the homework, but then she doesn't grade the homework at all! Study hard.
i've never done well in math before her class. she is very willing to go out of her way to explain something in a different way in order for you to understand it better. i love her and she is funny too. i wish i could get her next semester!
I loved having her. She is so willing to help if you have any problems. Homework is not turn in but you should do it. The notes are very important every quiz and test comes right from them so although attendance is not mandatory you should go to class. I really wish I could have her next semester!
Excellent teacher! She's very helpful and is so understanding of her students. I never used the book all semester or did any homework but passed with an A-. She tends to write very fast on the board though. I would get frustrated because she would finish writing then begin explaining the material before any of us were ready. but TAKE HER THOUGH!!!!
This teacher is great! Take her, the class is super easy, and she only teaches you what you need to know. I wish every teacher was this dedicated. I loved her. I dont think there is a better math teacher out there!
At the beginning of the semester I hated her, she writes really fast on the board and you don't have time to think about the material, but I changed my mind about her because shes always there to help in office hours, be sure to take great notes everything on the tests/quizzes is right out of the notes, take her
Dr. Shields can be dreadfully boring. However, she knows how to teach Math, she uses example after example and it gets drilled into your head. The quizzes and tests are fairly straight forward and easy. No attendance policy but show up so you don't miss notes and you should have no problem getting an A
Professor Shields was the best math teacher I ever had. I am awful at math and got a solid A for the first time in my whole life. She gives straightforward examples that are almost exactly the same questions on quizzes and tests. She doesn't use the book at all so don't buy it! Only 3 tests and 5 short quizzes... Get her if you can!!
She's awesome! Makes sure that everyone understands things before she moves on. Attendance is not mandatory but going definitely helps since she basically gives you an outline of every question. She's so chill and pretty much rocks
She is such a good math teacher! Attendance is not required, but I would recommend going. If you go to class, you will do good in class. All of the questions on tests or quizzes come straight from the notes, so don't bother buying the book.
Such a good teacher, I loved her. Attendance wasn't mandatory, but it's worth going because she reviews so much before tests. We barely used the books, don't bother buying them.
Sandi Shields is by far the best math teacher I have ever had! She broke things down in such a clear way, plus she is really kind and easy going. if you go to class, she wants to make sure you get an A. great teacher, TAKE HER!!
Prof. Shields is by far the best math professor. 1) Attendance is not mandatory. So if you get it you don't have to go. But the class builds on the previous lesson sometimes. But you'll mostly want to go because she reviews from the previous lesson at the beginning of each class meeting. And she breaks down EVERYTHING. Take her. Take her ASAP!
Professor Shields is absolutely amazing. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I would definitely recommend going. DONT BUY THE BOOKS! I wish I hadn't! You will not be dissatisfied with her, register for her and see :) She is really pretty and so nice.
Dr. Shield's is amazing. She is the best math professor I've had in college. She makes sure that everyone is understanding the material and is always available to help. Wish I had her for every math class.
She is one of the best math teachers I have ever had! She makes the material simple and does not move on until she is certain that everyone understands. She is extremely helpful and understanding. Attendance is not mandatory, however I never missed a class because i just enjoyed being there. If you do miss, you might be lost tho.
DO NOT BUY THE BOOK! i never once opened my book, homework is optional and attendance is optional. i missed 2 days and did no homework, as long as you get the notes and study a little bit the night before its an easy A. Such an awesome and really nice teacher, she generally cares about how each student is doing. I would take her again!!
Best profs ever! You don't need the book. She explains everything extremely well, if your confused she is always willing to help! I would recomend this teacher to everyone! I wasn't very interested in math, Profs Shields made it fun to learn!
She is probally the best math teacher I have ever had! Super nice! makes everything really clear! She wants all of her students to do well and will help you any way she can! You dont need the text book for her class but make sure to get the booklet she co-wrote. Highly reccomend!
I loved reading through all the comments... Don't listen to ANYBODY who says anything other than DR. SHIELDS IS AMAZING. Anybody who had problems with her teaching probably isn't very smart and has problems in all their classes. She is a genius and one of the best teachers the CofC math dept. offers. I loved her in 320 and 340!
although she doesnt take attendence in class she gives you the exact problems for quizzes and tests but with different #s and explains it all crystal clear. very nice and wants you to do well. drops lowest test grade.
Loved Her! I am terrible at math and i made an A on everything. She explains everything in great detail and gives you example problems for the test. She is very helpful! One of the best teachers ive had so far!
Great teacher, really enjoy her class she gives all the test and quiz answers to you in lecture (just with different numbers), does go kinda slow through some of the material and it gets repetitive when i already understand the concept but thats my fault for taking an introductory math class!!
Awesome teacher, you do not need the book. Class attendance is optional but you need to come to class and takes notes because that is where her test come from. If you write all the examples from the class and study those examples, you will make an A. She will help anyone who needs it and is always available during office hours. I loved her class!!!
Dr. Shields is absolutely amazing. That's all you need to know! I hate math and was awful at it but her class was amazing and fun and so easy. She's funny and sweet and helpful. You don't even need the book. Go to class and write down EVERYTHING and you'll get an A. She's awesome.
One of my favorite professors so far! Professor Shields is incredibly helpful. I hate math and she made me enjoy it. I highly recommend going to her office hours, she is personable and always willing to help!
DO ANYTHING YOU CAN TO GET INTO THIS CLASS. Change your schedule if you have to. She is the most amazing and caring teacher I've had yet. I was awful at math but she explains things in such an amazing way. I'm going to miss her. Attendance isn't taken but if you go to every class and take notes her class is actually fun. No homework.
Profess Shields was a great teacher. Lectures are not mandatory, but what she goes over in class is exactly what's on the test. I struggle in math, which explains my C-, but the final for Math 103 is MULTIPLE CHOICE, and textbook is not needed. DEFINITELY TAKE HER. SHE IS THE BEST
Prof Shields is amazing. She's funny and full of energy when she teaches; I'm never bored in this class! She makes math simple and easy even for the people who hate the subject. All you have to do to succeed is attend class and take notes- she tells you exactly what's on the quizzes and tests. Don't buy the book!
Her lectures are clear and she will go over material as many times as you need her to. She is great with answering email questions with a fast response. She gives partial credit on all problems which really helps. She is very nice and friendly. Does NOT take attendance. I really recommend her to anyone!
Attendance is not mandatory, but if you don't go, you will not pass. Guaranteed. Don't get the book, just go to class. She does a lot of examples which can get repetitive, but it really helps. Tells you EXACTLY what is going to be on the test so there are no surprises. So glad I had her!
I've been to five classes this semester and am failing but I'll definitely retake the class and actually go next time. The key to this class is going. She has an open attendance policy however if you don't go, you won't know when the quiz days are (she moves them from the syllabus) and you WILL miss one and boom there goes your grade (like me).
Easy class, she drops your lowest grade
Explains everything very detailed. Doesn't cancel class often. 6 quizzes with 3 test and a final. Easy if know the material.
I loved having Prof Shields for Math 103! I hadn't taken math since high school but there was really nothing to be worried about; she's really clear in class and will happily go over examples. She wants her students to understand and does whatever she can to help. I didn't buy the textbook and was fine. Take her!
Professor Shields is a wonderful math professor. She genuinely cares about how all of her students are doing and wants to see us all succeed. Attendance is not taken but I definitely recommend going because she has frequent quizzes. So friendly and approachable and knows what she's doing. Take this prof she is great!
Conveys material miraculously. 5 quizzes, 3 tests, and a final. No attendance policy. Has notes available on OAKS for guidance. DO NOT need the textbook. Prepares for tests clearly and nothing is a surprise. Group projects that give extra credit on tests.
Prof. Shields is organized, kind, and sweet. If you follow her instructions and do the work there is no reason you shouldn't get an A. She is very clear on her material and can explain things super well. Lots of extra credit options. Take her class you will not regret it!!!
Really easy class if you study. Professor Shields is very nice and makes sure that every student understands the material. The only challenging part was the online tests because they are on lockdown browser and if any little thing goes wrong/messes up, even if it's not your fault, you get points taken off.
Do not take math online. One mistake online will cost you your grade. You have 5 minutes to scan your test and upload it to grade scope before loosing points. One wrong click and if something does not work, it could cost you your grade on the test. Professor Shields and the math board is not understanding when it comes to tech problems.
Professor Shields has our best interest at heart but taking this class online was a mistake. Math online is already hard because you have to in a way teach yourself. One mistake on lockdown browser and you get points taken off. Professor Shields and the math team do not understand the difficulty of online math and they don't really care.
The class wasnt hard but we had to use lockdown browser and gradescope to scan, upload, and mark our work in 6 min after tests which was very stressful because of often unforeseen technical difficulties so although my work was correct and I should have got an A I received a B because of uploading a few seconds late or a scan being a little blurry.
Professor Sheilds is awesome! She makes sure all of her students understand the material and is always avaliable for help outside of class. One of my favorite professors I have had at CofC.
This class is just a mess. She should not teach on zoom, she doesnt know how to operate the meeting whatsoever. If you have any wifi or technical issues you will not be able to make the tests up. She doesnt grade attendance, only tests and pop quizzes which again, you cannot make up. Not good for people with test anxiety.
She is an awesome professor! A couple of pop questions for each module, but don't worry. She does an excellent job instructing the material. I suck at math, but I felt so smart in her class! There was an assessment after each module on lockdown. She teaches to guided notes that you are required to print out.
she will not let you email her; if you do, she won't respond. She "doesn't have time for this" every time a student is confused about the material. She recommends a specific calculator then says it is your fault that it doesn't have all of the functions. If the colleges' internet goes out then it's your fault. It's awful would not recommend it.
I think a lot of the reviews are unnecessarily harsh, Shields teaches the material well+more than willing to go through any questions. She drops your lowest module or final grade! My biggest recommendation is to attend class to do the pop questions. The pop questions brought up my grade significantly, I ended up w/a 100 in the class bc of them
If you have to take her in a giant lecture section, don't. Each quiz, you have to upload your work so that you can get credit on questions you missed. Except she doesn't tell you how you got it wrong, so you're screwed for the cumulative final. She also only teaches one way to do everything, so you often have to teach yourself with other resources.
Professor Shields has a great online math course. They are extremely easy and she also pre records the lectures to look back at incase you had issues during class. She also allows time for questions during the Zoom which is really helpful. She is super response on email and doesn't wanna see anyone fail.
She should not teach on zoom. If you have any sort of technical or wifi problems, it is completely your fault, especially on tests, she will not be accommodating in any way. The class is easy if you just do the work, but the tests being on zoom and scanning and uploading your work to grade scope within a certain amount of time is stressful.
Very flexible and understanding, and very patient when explaining the material.
While I do not like some of her policies, Professor Shields is a great professor overall. I've never personally been good at math, but I feel that she is very fair when it comes to grading and class overall especially with it being online. While her policies are very strict especially with WiFi and calculators, she is a good professor.
Very helpful with preparing for exams, answers all questions, understanding
She has extremely strict policies. She is not flexible AT ALL. You cannot make-up any work. If you have technical difficulties, she does not care. I missed a quiz due to technical difficulties and that was just too bad. If you email her she just tells you to look at the syllabus. Her instructions are very confusing.. she claims its "not that hard".
Very sweet lady and willing to help. She does not take attendance, but you should go! I fell into the habit of not going and I def saw that in my test grades because I was not able to understand the material as well. She offers MANY extra credit opportunities through pop quizzes in class (that won't hurt your grade if you get them wrong)SO SO nice
