nice teacher....really helpful..but hard markers..*yikes*
She is nice and friendly.. though she mark quite hard
she is a nice teacher, but she marks quiet strict!
Her classes were very interesting. I never got bored in her classes. She understood international students well. She knew common writing english errors that non-native English speakers have. She marks very strict but i know that is for students.
She is really a nice person..I liked her class..not boring...She always tells students what she wants..but still hard to get marks..Don't skip her class!! She doesn't like it!! and try to make her like you!!
I like her as much as I like David Beckham.GOD Bless.
She explains things throughoutly and clearly. Also, she is very encouraging, helpful and patient with students. She tells students exactly what she wants on a paper. Take her classes and I promise that you will get good marks!!
She is hard in marking. There are only 2 students got a S for 1107. Others...only useless *.
Very approachable prof is you need help. She is a fair marker. A fair amount of reading is required and a knowledge of literature is a must.
the teacher is ok, but easy. Every essay you can write at home and then just copy in class, she will never see, you will know the topic of essays a week before so you can practice.
very good teacher, she knows how to teach international students. a little bit hard marker, but it's ok. whatever, study hard, because it's difficult to pass 1107!
Dont take her, you will regret it, she is not very supporting! if she dont like u, you die
People whatever you do don't take her. She is hard, not helpful and very unfriendly. Also her classes are aren really boring.
I have to say I will not take her class any more.
a very hard marker~~
unfriendly 2 her students, many in-class essays, and a hard marker
Take it from someone who is not an ESL student, Sandra was a good teacher and a fair marker. She picked interesting works to study, and the work load wasn't too bad although there was a lot of readings.
Very good teacher. Fair marker if you have a basic grasp of the english language. Funny, dry humour.
great instructor, but a hard marker, even harder to get a "s".
She is excellent teacher, she also pays close attention of your grammar, But if you work hard on your essays you will survive, other wise you will be disappointed with your marks. She is fair, and she posses excellent skills in teaching english.
hard marker>.<
Sandra is a good, not a hard.. i repeat.. not a difficult teacher!
~make a easy course difficult!!!~
she is a very good teacher but hard about ESL erorrs.
you wont like her.
Sandra is a great teacher. Seems difficult, but the marks are high in the end. Very knowledgeable of Latin American Literature. Strongly Recommended.
DON'T TAKE ENG W/ HER......SHE'S HARD=(
If you can write a decent essay you will do fine. She is kind and does try to make it interesting. If you are an ESL student you may find this hard but the next course will be harder so get used to it.
This woman should not be teaching. She's got no patience, doesn't know what she's talking about. She does her research from google.ca Please lady, next time, let someone else who actually knows latinamerican authors to teach the class!!!!!
this woman is a teacher?? well I beg to differ. picks her favorites and shuns the rest kinda cranky and boring with no real style or flare marks everything so hard I had A's in H.S. now I have C's
Easiest course I've taken, by far. Doesn't really know what she's talking about half the time. Treats students like we're still in elementary school, therefore it's very easy. Never did well in English until this course, highly recommend if you're looking for ease.

shes not as bad as people say on here, just try to have a sense of humour about covering "cages" pretty much for the entire class. seriously by the end of the class you will hope the author is drowning in a prehistoric tarpit somewhere.
Excellent teaching skills. Funny. Intelligent..Her classes are interesting if people involve themselves in discussion. Like everyone says though, she marks pretty low 4-7/10 on average. Its heartbreaking.
She doesn't teach, she does group discussions. Didn't learn a thing from her. She's very mean to students she doesn't like and the ones she likes, she dotes on. Showing favoritism is unprofessional.
Sometimes she doesnt know what shes talking about.. seems clueless; not really sure if she is right or not. Also, she is a really hard marker... but if you personally talk to her about something she is quite helpful.. other than that, just go to her class. she likes good attendance
I don't know what to say about her. That day when the projector light bunt out, and then she tried to use the power point projector to work with her overhead, shows she is clueless. She is nice in her office hours, but she is hard. She did help me write a more "coherent" paragraph. So, if you don't care about your GPA, take her =)
Nice but a little clueless. She needs to know more about her subjects. Hates being corrected in front of the class. Fair marker, a little picky on the details once in a while.
Well personally I didn't like her much. She seemed to into group discussions, which was a bunch of students who didn't know what they were talking about, then wasted class time going over in detail the discussions we had. Was incredibly hard marker, and I found assignments were pretty pointless. Only prof. I didn't like this semester.
So-so. Nice enough. A little bored by her presentation of the content and a lot of the work itself. Relatively easy marker, though. For a first year prof, not bad especially if english isn't your focus. If it is, try for someone a little more dynamic.
boring! Nice enough, but even though I enjoy English I could not get interested in the class at all. Easy enough marker, but I don't recommend her class.
likes group discussions, thats what we did all semester. pretty easy marker. 2inclass essays(10%each) 1revision(15%) 1in class summary(10) 1term paper (MLA 20%) and final (25%) + participation (10%)
She is not a good teacher never take with her NEVER.
Her lectures are light and straight-forward, and goes at a slow pace. It might get awkard when discussions are neglected. She is a difficult marker, that is just an opinion BUT her scoring system is lowered as well so it all balances out.
Mrs. Slade explains the course material very clearly and encourages opinions from her students. You can tell she's very knowledgeable and interested in what she teaches; however, no matter how good of a student you are, if you skip her classes she will eventually get SERIOUSLY PISSED and chew you out about it.

She's very clear on what she wants. Just do what asks and u'll get an A. Upon completion of ur essay, just show it to her and she'll tell u what to change then u get an A. Highly recommended.
I feel she's a good teacher, however, DO NOT skip her class AT ALL. As long as you do this, she's really nice. Some of the materials are really dry and boring but useful. Her midterm was easy and she always tells us what she wants in the essays and tells us the topic a week in advance. Good teacher overall.
she is really hard
Sandra is a decent prof. She is reasonable in her marking and will focus on teaching what the class struggles with. In her class, there is one research paper to write. I found that her 1121 course was helpful in preparing me for 1127.
The best English teacher I've ever had. She tells everyone from the beginning what she expects from students. Very easy-going and helpful.Just never skip her classes and do all homework. Her classes are not boring too.Highly recommended!
She is a decent professor but you MUST show up to every class. If you don't you will get onto her bad side. In-class discussions make up most of every class and as long as you contribute (anything, you will be sure to get a good mark. She expects you to remember your stuff from previous english courses, so she overlooks many "obvious" mistakes.
She is such a hard marker. A bad teacher that I've ever seen. She does not organize the course and she won't give you a clear idea what to do for the course. The final is extremely difficult. And you won't pass the course if you fail the final or you may fail the course even if you pass the final.
Sandra is amazing! She is strick about attendence but that's for your own good. If you attend all her classes, you'll do well. Very clear about her expectations and very vair marker. If you want to make your life easier, please take her. For the first time in my life I can say that I liked an English course!
She is amazing!... Her readings are not too long!
Sandra is a great prof! She makes it pretty easy. She gives you the answers to quizzes and tests beforehand so just attend the lectures and you`ll ace the class(attendance is mandatory and if you skip a lot you`ll end up on her bad list) Lectures are mostly just class discussions but no participation marks, easy marker with easy projects and papers
She always has handouts but she never posts anything online. Some students in my class make great points and analyze the material brilliantly, but she usually disregards them in favour for her simple ideas. It just doesn't seem like she knows what she's talking about sometimes (Especially when it comes to poetry).
She is a very nice woman, but it is very easy to just zone out in her class. She marks super easy. Sometimes she forgets about deadline dates, so you have to remind her. She doesn't have a course outline that tells you the dates, so get her to write out one!! Read the books, watch the films, listen to the lectures and ur golden.
Sandra was such a great prof! Very helpful, clear. You can tell that she wants you to succeed. Yet coming from someone who simply adores English, her selections are very interesting and link together quite well. As long as you keep up with readings, you are completely fine! Her assignments are fair, and I have always felt prepared.
Not sure I really learned anything. All we did was copy edit in class since that was her job so she loved doing it. Was not clear about assignments, most students had no idea what was going on. She definietly favors certain students, they don't come to class but still get a good mark when she states that skipping class will make your mark go down.
Sandra's not the easiest prof but she marks pretty fair. She makes the class do a lot of peer editing group work and grammar stuff. Showing up to her class is a must since she gives out participation marks. The first few essays were worth 5% then they eventually increased to 10-25%.
Funny sense of humour, which keeps things interesting. Very clear about assignments and a very fair marker. Most English teachers are so hard on your work, but she is not. However she still gives some constructive criticism to help you improve. My only qualm was that she takes a little too long to mark assignments.
She is a great teacher and a fair marker. Make sure you attend all classes and watch your grammar and you'll do fine!
Best English teacher I had. Her marking is hard in the beginning but get easier later on the term. Term grade is out of 105% which gives you bonus marks. Make sure you attend all classes and participate and you'll do fine
Sandra was great. Really warmed up to her as the term progressed. Fair/easy marker and tons of opportunities to increase your grade. Didn't have to go out of my way for the A, but be sure to attend classes. Don't give her sass - she'll rip you apart.
She was very interesting. I gave her a 3 for clarity, but if you raised your hand and asked her to explain something, she would do it without sounding condescending. Good Feedback. One of those teachers that really want you to succeed :)
Sandra is definately not the easiest proff, dont expect to walk into her class and get an A, I worked hard and got a B. Attend all classes and you will be fine.
First english class that caught my attention and interest. Slade was an engaging prof who incorporated sociological, psychological & historical themes into our readings which made studying literature fun! I really liked this class which (going into it I didnt like english classes) actually had me wanting to take more english classes! Great prof!
Attendance is must! Lots and lots of group work. I'm not too sure if i've learned anything from her class. She's a fair marker, but still, you don't get a clear sense in her class. She definitely has her favorite. If you are her favorite, you'll be okay with absence and texting in class right in front of her.
She's a great english prof and english is my most dreaded course. She is anti-tech, tho (no laptops/cellphones/tablets in class - don't buy an e-book for her class!) Not an easy marker but pretty fair. Must keep up with readings - lots of group work on the readings (I think this is a good thing.) Not too much work. Don't get on her bad side, tho.
This course is designed well and is varied.Problems: "The doctrine of affections", don't buy it! Sandra is good at what she does, but she is moody and can be rude, also if you are a minority she can be biased.
I really enjoyed Sandra's class. She doesn't spend a lot of time trying to force students who don't care to care, which I like, and keeps discussions rolling amongst those who do. Fair marker, show up to all classes and you will be fine. Not the easiest class but completely manageable with some effort. (She has great style also)
Sandra was great. Initially I was not fond of her personality, but she really grew on me. Didn't put up with ppl who didn't care. pay attention, be polite, and you're golden. she was clear on her expectations for essays too. happy to get an A with Sandra
Sandra is so far the best prof I've ever had. Fair marker and very interesting lectures.
take her
Taking 1100 online and the material is more like a philosophy class rather than English class. Final requires lots of review on every single thing covered throughout the semester (philosophical ideas and critical thinking)
ENG1100 is not necessarily a difficult class, dependent on your reading and writing level. Slade can expect quite a bit, can be unclear on what she wants from various assignments, but she is a fair marker and gives you opportunities to improve and ask questions. The course is reading heavy, also requires discussion contribution. Would take again.
She is an experienced professor and really knows how to teach. I've learned a lot of techniques to improve my writing. She may look strict first, but she is friendly and really helps you. Use her office hours too. Highly recommended!!
She is really a good teacher. She focuses on what you need to improve. I have no idea how is she in university transfer courses, but she is an excellent teacher for ESL students.
Classes are discussion-based, and Sandra finds the perfect balance between moderating discussions and encouraging student engagement. She rewards participation, and is always happy to help as long as you put in the effort. As the course is an academic writing prerequisite for a BA at UBC, be prepared to write at least five papers. Great prof.
easiest college english course I ever taken! I'm so glad I took her. I usually get a C+/B grade in english, and with Slade I got an A-! If you see an online english course with her, I REALLY RECOMMEND IT!! Her readings are interesting and she gives you a lot of time to do the assignments. GPA booster for sure.
probably the worst experience I've ever had for any course. Feedback? none. Guidance? none. office hours? none. Teaching? can't believe it's possible, but basically none. Have you ever had to write an essay about a subject that has not been presented to you by the teacher except for a youtube video link? now is your chance to experience it!!
I'll never take English again. I've learned nothing, super hard to get an answer from her. We had papers to write but none of us had any clues what we were supposed to do. No guidance. There are basically no lectures, just random powerpoints posted with vague information. I'm a straight A student and got terrible grades in this class.
You should take her for 1127, she is the best!
Do not recommend her. Not available to her students.
She is worse than useless. Was completely non-existent for the course. We had to have her replaced in the end by another professor, who then told us that even the assignment requirements were not for this class. She messed up so bad, she gave us the wrong assignment for the class. Do not take her even if you must wait another semester!
7.5 for an S and 0.5 deducted for every significant grammar error, her grading criteria is heavy on GRAMMAR only She doesnt teach anything, u just have to read textbooks(summary/reading and online grammar practice book-code required) and learn by urself Writing every 2weeks and disc post every week- not really accessible answers not straightforward
Best English Prof. I usually am not the best at English, but this class was terrific; she incorporated sociological, psychological & historical themes into our readings. She focuses on what you need to improve and is a great grader. Best English Prof ever, I hope to retake her.
Literally the best English teacher I've ever had
5 papers, and she gives you good feedbacks. Take her
Great Prof! I would have taken her English 1100 class if she had taught it. very helpful and useful.
We did lots of reading. Sandra gave out short stories almost every week that we would discuss in groups and as a class. Participation is worth like 10% so try to participate as much as you can.
Avoid her, I didn't learn anything. Very boring lecture and no sense.
Sandra was a great professor for teaching academic writing. While all of her assignments and homework were done on paper and nothing online, she offers very clear and helpful feedback on which areas to improve on for each assignment. Participation is a big component for her class so make sure to show up and do the work on time!
Sandra is a nice prof and a genuinely caring person who allows students to express their opinions. If you are not an English lover you may find her classes a bit uninteresting. I appreciated that she would take time to teach common errors students were having. Your mark revolves around a paper about an object of your choice and the final.
She is anything but motivational towards students if you have any issues she makes no effort to help you only puts you down and discourages you. About 5/6 assignments the whole semester mostly weighted quite heavy so if you do bad on one be prepared for your grade to drop significantly, would not recommend also only gives out paper nothing online.
she is really good professor.
Would definitely not take any courses with this instructor. Very rude and dismissive, I don't understand why she chose to be a teacher if she acts this way towards her students.
She was very helpful to me as she reached out to me personally to see if I needed any extra help. I found her to be pretty lenient. The only con about the class is she only does paper handouts and hardly ever posts on Brightspace. There were a lot of handouts so its important to be organized. If you show her you care, she will help you.
