she is cool but makes you reaaaaaaally think and when she does this it seems like she doesnt know wat shes talkin bout when in reality u misunderstand. sometimes its a lil confusin in her class. but other than that shes cool shes fun she laughs and stuff
I really didn't like her class before I dropped it. You would ask her a question and she would answer you with a question too. Anyways I thought that she was a sorry excuse for a teacher. Teachers are supposed to teach not not have you do assignments with no directions.
I loved her class. I took her my first semester fresh out of high school and thought she was fantastic.
Prof Valerio is cool, and makes you feel cool for taking her class. Her style is more about allowing the student to think for themselves, but some students don't understand that because they need more structure. Oh well. Prof Valerio is still cool, regardless.
I had lots of fun in Ms. Valerio's English class. She taught well and made you open your mind and think. I learned a lot from that class and it's really helped me with my other English classes.
Great teacher! She does indeed make you think alot on your own.I would say it made me a much better writer. She is very organized and respects students that show a want to learn.Come prepared EVERYDAY!!!
Subject matter was great. I enjoyed the reading selections. Unfortunately, she rarely seemed interested in teaching us. Feedback was not given. Assignments were given or changed at the last minute. The rare times she was interested- she was a good teacher.
She's not the get an easy A kind of teache, which sometimes ain't so bad! If you really become a better writer and aren't afraid of actually learning then take her. She really does make you think but she's only doing her job. She's also very humorous i would take her again.
Socratic Method of Teaching. If you like to learn and be comfortable with your teacher. She is it
She doesn't give any feed back after grading essays. I tried asking a simple question on an assignment and she threw back 5 different questions at me in a haughty manner. She does open your mind.
Read the Syllabus. Come to class Prepared. She is not as scary as she tries to be. Do the work and get the grade. She does answer questions with more questions to make you think.
Just had my first day with Ms. Valerio. Right off the bat, I could tell she was really different. Not like my normal teachers. Kind of put me off at first, but after thinking it over, I think she'll be a good teacher. She's pretty hot too. So if anything, I get to check her out despite her unconventional teaching. Lol
You have to be super nice to her if not, your the least of her problems
She is a very tough grader. She does make you think to answer your own question your asking. Her grading is a 0, 50 or 100.
Don't take her class. Very confusing. Very obscurely direction.
She will challenge you to become a better writer. Don't ask a question unless you read canvas and syllabus first. She rarely answers your questions and she will throw questions back at you to make you think critically. Assignments would be a bit confusing at times. She may come off rude, but she is not. Sarcastic, funny, good professor.
I took her for both 1301 and 1302. She is an awesome professor who wants to see you succeed. critical thinking is going to be needed in her classes. She is also quite comical.
Do the work, get an A!
She has a modern sense of humor with intellectual puns. Her class was theme based which made it very enjoyable. Instructions are crystal clear, and she replies to her emails every morning. Her teaching style encourages student independence.
Valerio was very unclear when it came to explaining instructions. When asking her any questions about the assignment she would reply with some kind of vague remark that would leave me even more confused than before. Although she is a bit funny, I would have preferred if she directly answered questions instead of constantly beating around the bush.
She is the least helpful teacher I've had in my college career. I went to her office hours, submitted multiple rough drafts for the same essays and still ended up making a 70 in her class. Every time I would come and ask about the bad grade I made she kept telling me "your getting better!" I don't know how constant C's represent getting better.
She was very rude in her responses to the emails that I sent here. I would ask her to explain her very confusing and vague instructions for the assignments or to help me understand the short notes she left on my rough draft and she always replied in a rude, your-so-stupid, manor. She also takes at least two days to respond to emails.
Mrs. Valerio encourages critical thinking. Her teaching style may be a little different than what some are used to but she provides everything you need to know to make an A. Read the book, utilize the resources she provides, and read the rubric to be successful. I enjoyed the class enough to trust her to teach me Composition II.
She responds to you very rude and treats you like you're stupid. Her remarks are uncalled for. She is very unclear when it comes to instructions, and it's pointless to email her because she responds with sarcasm and no clear answer. She was the least helpful teacher I've ever had.
She does encourage critical thinking, she is very different to what I have been used to but I did learn a lot. I wasn't a fan of how she thought and she was rude and will make you feel like an idiot. But..... Again, I did feel I learned a lot I just did not like her teaching style
Shes a good professor, you just have to understand they way she teaches. She wants you to use critical thinking, and you will need to use it to do well. If you are confused, call. Email only gets you so far on understanding, especially when she wants you to answer your question yourself (critical thinking, comes to play). Easy, once you reach out
Mrs. Valerio is a decent professor. She is not there to baby anyone. She expects you as a college sophomore to think for yourself. She challenges critical thinking skills which is something I admire about her. She's a fair grader as long as she sees you try. She is there to help you but you have to reach out to her.
Always answers your question with a question. Will never give a straight answer. Don't expect to get much help at all. Wants you to use critical thinking which is great but her approach is awful. Grades papers fair. Won't accept any papers not in MLA format. If you have the chance to choose a different professor DO IT!
Just don't
Avoid ,Surprised I passed that class with the grade I did but it came with huge amounts of stress and confusion. I am all for critical thinking but forget trying to message her because all you will get is a more confusing answer. The whole online class once failed a certain paper, not one or two people but ALL .
Easy to make a good grade if you handle it like an adult and don't procrastinate. She allows multiple chances to improve a paper and she cares about students. English sucks in general and is hard to like, but my writing has improved overall for my future essays by taking this class.
Have a question? You will receive another question, or very subtle response. Her method of teaching her students is very crass. She demands her students to try to understand her line of thought, but If you challenge that, be prepared. Perhaps she is a much more understanding individual in class. Too bad I will never know.
Professor Valerio catches a lot of slack. She is a tough teacher, but I respect her and her teaching style. Welcome to life, people!
As long as your participate, make a real effort and keep up with the workload you will do fine. I took this class during the summer and definitely was a good choice.
Rude professor. Probably the worst at Del Mar. Im not an English major and she treated me as if I was. Avoid
Answers you with a question.
gives the WORST feedback ever. Answers your questions with another question so good luck with your assignments... take this advice and do not take her. Rude, practically called me stupid
If you are taking this class in the summer be prepared to do a lot of work. Also, turn in everything on time & try your best & do not miss an assignment. She will let you email her and text her if you need help.
Ms. Valerio is a tough teacher but its for your benefit! This is college dont expect to coast through without putting in effort! Do your assignments, pay attention, and keep up... utilize your resources people! If you put fourth effort it will pay off you will learn. If you dont know MLA format look it up you will use it 95% of the time in her clas
I thought I would love this class but this prof honestly ruined it for me. Crappy feedback. Answers a question with a question. Im sorry Valerio, but you dont teach Philosophy. #1 expectation of this class is to read her mind and if you cant then you wont get the grade you work your butt off for. Goodluck!
The worst English course I've ever taken. Honestly. I haven't met a single teacher before who was so adamant on refusing to give constructive feedback. She answers your questions with another question and talks down to you as if she's the President. Don't take this course. Took her last year and I've never cried more from a course.
Never have I despised a class more in the three years I have been a dual-credit student. At first, she was nice, later became condescending, rude, and cold. Never gave feedback, couldn't meet up when planned, and answered questions with more questions. Believes in "no excuse" environment, yet won't say what she wants or is looking for.
One of the best teachers I have ever had! She constantly provides students with resources, she encourages students to think for themselves, and she goes out of her way to help all her students. She is a tough, but understanding . If you work with her, she will work with you. Those who rate her poorly clearly did not want to put any effort in.
I have never had a more difficult teacher in my life. The weekly assignments are not difficult because everyone pretty much received a 100 for completion, but the major essays are graded with no mercy! She would answer a question with another question and would say to just go to the Stone Writing Center for help! Worst ever!!!
It is very hard to even get any concrete feedback. When I would ask a question she was very snarky and quite confusing. Out of all the students in my class about 73% made Cs and about 25% failed and only about 2% made a B.
Snarky and rude. Expects you to know and practically calls you stupid if you have a question. Grades harshly and asked why she answers with another question. Ive never had a worst experience with a professor. Avoid.
I was able to improve my writing a lot with Professor Valerio. She was a great professor, although I did struggle with her language.
Gives awful, ambiguous answers to questions about work. Will give poorly specified directions and then reprimand you for not doing exactly what she wants.
When you figure out how she likes things done, her class will be easier. There are four essays, quizzes, annotated bibliographies, group discussions, and a final for her class. I had to work for my grade in her class, and she will defiantly make you a better writer.
Doesn't tell us what to do want us to ask questions with a response with yes or no
Professor Valerio was a blast! She was very tough but cared about your learning. She would go one-on-one with every student after a paper and help us figure out what we could do better. One paper she even opened again for us to revise.
Didnt feel like I was inspired to actually write essays.
Her catch phrase is "think critically." What she really means is "read my mind." Doesn't tell you what she wants or expects. Will praise your work one day, then give you a 70% when you submit it. Refuses to answer yes or no questions and doesn't like it when you're blunt with her. You'll pass if you make her feel like she's a good teacher.
She gave amazing lectures, really funny but she is a TOUGH grader and I honestly would not take this course again.
Professor Valerio is a good professor, and she wants students to succeed. However, I never knew what I did wrong on my essays. I made a C on my first essay, and she was very vague about why I got that grade. The textbook we used only about five times the whole course. She is a good teacher, but I think she needs to work on communication.
Please save yourself. You do NOT want this professor. She is never clear about direction or feedback, won't answer questions and makes you feel stupid for asking them, demands respect instead of earning it, tears down inspiration, and ALWAYS expects you to read her mind. I sincerely advise you to steer clear from Valerio, she shouldn't be teaching.
Wow, Ms. Valeria was very rude and unprofessional. Unwilling to provide answers to even the most basic questions. She is downright ego-manic and pretentious. I understand your a professor but please realize that means you will work with students. Please come down off your academic high horse and engage with students. Very de-humanizing.
I really don't understand why professor Valerio gets such a bad rep on this website. She is definitely a tough grader, but she is a great professor. She is always accessible and provides great feedback. One of the lines she says all the time is, "How can I improve my teaching to service you?". Work hard, read, take her critiques, and you'll do fine
We had to write 5 essays during the course. The quizzes were mostly pre-writing assignments like turning in your thesis or rough draft. Her critiques were rough, but she also helped you fine-tune and gave extra chances and extra credit. I feel like anyone who puts in the work will do well. I took the class as a dual credit student.
Professor Valerio loves what she does. You need to ask questions if you have them and take advantage of the hours she's available to speak with you. She will always help you and give you great feedback. A little sarcastic, but she wants you to think. Take Valerio if you actually want to learn something! Even a tough cookie can be sweet!
Online class. She posts instructions that can be hard to follow. Del Mar needs to offer live classes and spend the money to make the class covid ready. The students suffer. I don't think many teachers really know how to successfully have online classes. Del Mar taking the easy way. This class/teacher would have been better in person.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. RUN RUN RUN. She will not help you a better writer or understand English at all. She wants you to read her mind and does not give clear instructions. Very rude and hard grader.
Posts 3 lectures with personal stuff and not much info to help the student. Her instructions are confusing and by the time she responds o questions tthe assignment is due within a few hours. I know she has taught this class before so I am surprised that she was not prepared by posting assignments that were not clear. Be prepared to teach yourself.
She expects you to read her mind and then she sort of makes fun of you for asking questions. She is not clear and she doesn't give you any constructive feed back until the last essay and then she picks at everything. It is hard to be perfect on the last paper when she never took the time to go into detail on your future papers.
I did NOT like this professor, she expected so much but gave so little? She started the class off with a "rice breaker" and literally gave everyone a low grade when she was not specific enough on what she was wanting from us. She gave low grades, but would not explain as to why or how. She does not clarify enough of what she wants, it's a no for me
She is a great professor that will work with you if you are willing to try. 10/10 would take her again
GREAT PROFESSOR, the comments on here are inaccurate. She is very caring and kind. Helpful with essays and will always help when you have a question. definitely would take again.
Procrastinators beware! You will definitely learn in this class if you are willing to put in the work. Tough grader. Though, always available and very down to earth. I would take her again.
Do the work and you will pass
she will grade your work with no feedback, so you will never know what are you doing wrong. stay away from this professor
DON'T DON'T DON'T.
She gave you bibliographies to write and expected you to do good without providing much information. She doesn't really give you feedback unless you ask for it. She was kind though and she was funny-occasionally.
She doesn't like being questioned on how she emails students or the wording that she uses in those emails. And then thinks it's a challenge when you say someone else read the emails and said they weren't straightforward enough
Don't believe the low ratings, they must not have done the work. She's preparing you for real life and University classes; where most of the work you do is online. If you read, take notes, ask questions, and pay attention, you will pass. If she says "write this down", then write it down! Students make it harder for themselves, not the professors.
She is a tough grader who does not explain what she wants from the assignment and does not provide clear instructions. She also doesn't put detailed criteria or rubrics for you to know what you should be putting into your assignment. I took the class online and heard it's the same in person.
Professor Valerio is a tough but fair grader. She expects students to be thoughtful in their work and put all their effort. A good class and you will pass if you do the readings and work. Just expect tough gradings on papers.
I was skeptical about taking her class because of all the negative reviews, but after taking her class recently I highly recommend taking it! Don't take anything she says too personal, she's just trying to get you to really think deeper & help you become a good writer. Do the work, ask questions, & you will pass. Make use of class time and examples
She was hilarious, understanding, and very patient. There was some moments that annoyed me but thats because I prefer to be left alone. She is tough, and can come off sarcastic so if you have tough skin this would be the class for you. But tbh, she has a sweet side to her and she does try her hardest. Be prepared to have your essay read aloud tho.
When I first started the semester, I thought Ms.Valerio hated me. She was tough and harsh, but I've learned to like her now. She grades hard, but she gives you everything you need to succeed.
Worst professor I have ever met!!! Would not recommend this professor to anyone, she holds herself to a very high standard and gets offended easily by essays.
Don't ignore the bad reviews!!! She grades everything late and never explains what she wants. Don't bother asking questions, because she won't answer them. She always has an attitude. She gave me a zero and sent a nasty email because she failed to give proper instructions. I've only heard bad things about this professor, and I experienced worse!
This professor fails to communicate in a meaningful way with students. She enjoys leaving passive aggressive comments instead of constructive criticism and refuses to provide any actual guidance, or clear standards, for the work she assigns. She grades incredibly harsh regardless of how well you follow the rubric. I do not recommend her.
This professor is nice but fails to effectively communicate with students. Responses are short & dismissive, and direct questions relating to assignment criteria are frequently ignored. Grading times are unimpressive. Essay feedback is limited and tends to read as a scripted response. When direct feedback is provided, it comes off as condescending.
She does not give proper instructions and then grades you for things not even on the rubric.
Passive aggressive comments and insults towards students work in her weekly videos. Accused me of plagiarism because I did not give a reference page when she never said to. This all after she made sure to tell us how incompetent we are for weeks for not following her "EXACT" instructions. Avoid her at all costs.
Taking the course was easy, but understanding her requirements or what she expected made the course horrible. She is mean and condescending and does not provide proper feedback. She grades fairly quickly but is dismissive when asked questions or elaborating on assignments. She will not help clear any misunderstandings.
The canvas layout is difficult to understand with many links, and long directions on how to do the homework that may cause things to be a bit more confusing. She can have a "passive agressive" tone to students and there work. I was accused of using AI as well being told my work will not peform well if graded by the rubric. Avoid this professor.
AI everywhere. This class is meant to break your spirit and conform to your ai overlords. (an exageration but she litterally has AI in her email. idk what else to say). Every assignment that is a major grade is vague, half the job is figuring out WHAT she wants, additionally 20% of these major grades FORCE YOU to use AI. Never again.
Not a good professor
It's possible to get a good grade if you pay attention and you can submit things late. But a lot of times she's not clear about what she wants and won't be kind and patient to you if you forget things. Her feedback is unclear and if you ask a question you're likely going to get a half baked answer. Don't take her classes if you want to be better.
I only improved a little bit on my writing taking this class. Even when you try hard and ask questions her feedback is very vague and not that helpful. She doesn't explain what she's looking for. Does she even know what she's looking for? I wouldn't recommend her to anyone. She's not that nice, so it's hard to feel ok asking for help.
This professor is VERY passive-aggressive. Her instructions/expectations are very unclear and has a tendency to change something last minute which made things difficult. A small error in your submission will be docked heavily. If you do not have an EXCELLENT understanding in English, do not take her. 3/21 people got an A this semester...
I took this class while both pregnant and postpartum, and she worked with me throughout my whole journey. I had many unforeseen circumstances that caused me to fall behind in the class, but she gave me many chances to turn in my work and pass the class. I am grateful to have had a professor as understanding as her!
Constantly Unprepared Non-Teaching. You have to be a mind reader when it comes to what the professor wants because she is so disorganized. The course subject matter wasn't provided, and she does not want things written in formal English. Horrible professor would not recommend.
She's interesting to say the least. As far as grading and assignments she can be difficult. She tends to change things last minute and be indirect in her responses and answers to questions, making it hard to understand what she wants. But she did provide opportunities for extra credit. She can be funny but she's very passive aggressive.
you MUST be a mind reader for her. I do believe my writing improved slightly but she doesn't care if you try your hardest. She's very disorganized. Super unprofessional on emails.
I enjoyed Valerio's class very much! Learned so much! AWESOME TEACHER!
