I *love* Gambie! He made me want to do chemistry. At the end of the story this guy kicks ass.
Funny teacher, tries his best to teach a 300 student class. Course is extremely hard, lot's of work. He tried his best to make it easy.
Funny Guy, Funny Explanation. Very hard course, I'm suprised I passed, mayeb it's because he's a pretty good prof :)
Very fair, wants everyone to do well. Never got angry and always had a sense of humour. He's great!

Great prof, very interesting course. Midterm and final are fair :)
Funny and helpful
"It's a fantasy!" The guy has a strong accent.. very hard to understand when he teached the french section..

VERY funny.. accent, appearance, explanations! sometimes his slides are out of order and/or repeated but overall course very good. he should teach mechanisms though. his midterm is HARD but exam is super easy... i failed the midterm but still managed an A+!!!
Talks like super mario :)
Great teacher... overall a nice guy. Funny, but in a way to help you to understand organic chem better. His exams were awesome, no suprises. Strongly recommend this teacher.
He uses great analogies to explain the material, making it very clear and easy to understand. His accent is great, but kind of hard to understand when you can barely hear him. Wears his pants really high too.
You will not learn enough in this class. You are better off in the other section to be prepared for second year organic chem, even if you get a lower mark.
Oh Sandro, you so crazy. Great guy but I found his class pretty hard. He really tries to explain things well but I found I didn't understand what he was saying a lot of the time and b/c of this I would lose interest. You can do well in this class but you have to be willing to put in effort to learn from the text etc, I wasn't and I suffered.

The only thing good about him is he made an insanely easy exam. No comment on his teaching.

Multiple Choice Mid-Terms are retarded. He thinks he's helping us but he's only digging us a deeper hole for Orgo 2. Id rather a normal midterm and write out the mechanisms than try and pick the best one of 5 off a sheet :S
OOh Sandro!....Sandro is a nice guy. Great accent! Nice illustrations!....lecture slides are always repeated and disorganised but ooh well...he's still great!
If your not gonna take Orgo2, take his class. With multiple choice open book exams, your basically guaranteed a good mark. I didnt study for the final at all and got an A+. Unfortunately, if your planning on taking orgo2, avoid this class. Either you'll fail or struggle. You wont even know how to do the most basic part of organic-Mechanisms!
Does not stress the most important part of organic - mechanisms - and I was lost all semester because he didn't cover the basics in the first few classes. Funny and friendly, but will not teach you what you need to know! Despite what other raters might say, multiple choice tests are hard when you aren't properly taught how everything works.
Not a good lecturer, doesn't stress important details, multiple choice open book exams/midterms are brutal. So far the only class I stopped attending and self-taught myself out of the textbook. Don't know how I did in the course yet, but I know I didn't do well. If you're set to be in his class, SWITCH NOW!
For General Chem, he's actually pretty good. Everything was clear, and he went through everything in depth. DO THE PRACTICE ON MASTERCHEMISTRY! His midterms were easy (for us no MC), but somehow the exam was way different from what the midterms were. Either way in general everything was good. Just DON'T get him for organic chem!
Worst teacher on campus. If you get him switch into any other section that he is not teaching. Covers no basics. Open book tests were much much harder then they sound
you're better off if you study on your own... even though exams are open book, they're a lot harder than they should be!
Multiple choice open book exams. He gave everyone 10% boost on final and midterm because so many people failed them. for org chem he does not teach mechanisms which kills your for org 2!
Switch to Dr. Flynn or Ogilvie now! You've been warned... =P No honestly.. he doesn't cover mechanisms which you will be in trouble when you take organic II (when the profs actually cover mechanisms in depth...) For CHM1311, he is fine though!
READ TEXTBOOK and do mastering chem. hes a nice guy but he can't teach.
He's a nice person, but teaching doesn't seem to be his thing. I recommend you going to his office hours because he seems very open to help you out. Sometimes I think there is a language barrier and doesn't seem to understand our questions. Go to DGDs, and do MasteringChem to help yourself out.
Class of 09. He does not teach anything that is useful or will actually help you understand the material. Albeit he tries to make us understand it using funny analogies. The final was very difficult compared to midterms. He asks specific questions that require a small single sentence answer from a 1400 page book. The book is useless at an exam.
Great guy, more than willing to help clarify at all times and is trying to make bland material fun. It's easy to tell he actually cares about all his students.
I liked him. He cares about the students. His problem is lecturing to the class. One on one he is very helpful. You have to study a lot. He likes to trick you on midterms. Its unfair because if you study really hard and seem to understand the material, you could still end up with a poor grade.
Get out of his class!
Midterms not like his teachings.you can study hard and understand the material, but still do bad
Really nice and funny guy! He does his best to keep the class interesting but let's face it: this IS organic chem. Not always the best at explaining concepts so you need to study hard. Midterms are tricky and do not always reflect what you learned in class. Sometimes it seems like we're just expected to know something on our own. Good luck!
He does many things to help you make up for poor midterm marks but since he's awful at teaching, you wont do so well on the midterms (2nd one will destroy you). So, to sum it up, he's helpful mark-wise (not saying you'll do well) but he's awful at teaching.
Both his midterms and exam were multiple choice. He wasn't very clear, but he really cared about his students. Go to a different profs lecture and use the textbook.
Awful lecturer. He is all over the map, and his powerpoint slides are not clear whatsoever. However his midterms AND final exam were multiple choice, made everything easier. Just remember to do the practice midterms over and over; he recycles a lot of the questions, especially for the final.
Very enthusiastic
He really tries his best at conveying the matter. Doesn't always get through though. Lots of analogies and complicated examples. Just do lots of practice questions in preparation for the midterms and final, as they were very different than what was taught in the class. Average.
Very enthusiastic and passionate prof. He may have issues drilling concepts into people's minds - but that's because they don't practice. Do the MasteringChem questions and ones from the book! Like math, organic chem takes alot of practice to build understanding and confidence. 1-on-1, Gambarotta is crystal clear. Go seek help when you need it!
He's hilarious and really cares about helping you do well. Definitely recommend for 1311, but avoid for 1321! Probably my favorite prof first semester.
Really a great prof! He gets a lot of flack, but his classes are really interesting (for a first year class). He's great in his office hours so if you need help, go to him. His lecture slides can be a little vague so make sure to do textbook reading on your own.
sucks, final was 30 question long when others was only 7 questions. very rude during office hours but nice and funny during lectures.
Good prof, a lot of the ratings on here say otherwise but really all you need to do is attend class and listen, if you do that then you'll be fine. Exams reflect the class material and are pretty easy.
Great prof, the attendance is mandatory but helps a lot. His midterms and exams are so easy. They reflect the types of questions during his lecture slides perfectly, with some repeating themselves on tests. Tips to for an A or better his class: study his slides not the textbook, understand why reactions happen and don't just memorize.
He appeared to skip over some of the stuff which is required from Orgo II, but nothing that can not be looked over and understood in 10 minutes. Over alright prof, very helpful at office hours and quite nice.
Very nice and really wants you t succeed. Not always the clearest at explaining things but his powerpoints really help. If you go over the homework and all the practice midterms before the exam you`re guaranteed to pass.
Can't convey anything properly. Classes were a chore to go to cause they were mandatory. I would say to choose anyone but him.
final was 30 long answer questions when the other section had 7.. horrible lecturer. found myself being thankful that the lectures were mandatory because that was an easy 5%. assignments are easy and a mark booster
Decent prof, very passionate and helpful, but not very good lectures (really bad powerpoints). Attendance is marked, and the online assignments are pretty easy. Doesn't use Blackboard for some reason. However, Orgo I is a pretty tough class. Know your nomenclature; it won't be taught. A word of advice: don't take the class if you don't need to.
I've never given a prof a bad review and am an A student. I failed this course. Very boring & unclear, doesn't cover all of the material necessary for the exam. In fact, he didn't manage to get through everything so had to learn last 2 chpters on our own. The final was 3x longer than other classes and avg. was failing grade. AVOID THIS PROF!!!
Dr. Gambarotta does operate the baseline of his lectures off his posted course powerpoint. The key is to participate in class, because when you do, he goes into detail and works it out in person; additionally, the level of help he will go to if you ask of it in person is immense. If I take more chemistry courses, I will be looking for his name.
In class he can be a bit confusing, but overall he wants students to succeed. He let the class replace their midterm marks with final exam marks if they were higher, so it is really easy to get a good mark. All of his questions are recycled from previous years for the most part.
Great professor, some people don't like his lecture style but his power points are super helpful and give you an exact outline of how to do specific calculations. He gives you many examples and lots of resources. You get 5% for attending class, and you get 10% for easy online assignments. Adds lots of extra marks. Cares about students.
Super nice and very funny. Keeps you engaged and reserves the class before the midterms for review sessions. His Sapling assignments are an easy 10% and you only need 50% to get full marks in the homework section.
Don't do it. He teaches chemistry entirely off of a powerpoint ...
Lectures are long, boring and hard to follow
Great teacher! Explains organic chemistry in a fun and helpful way. Lots of time available for office hours and I'm telling you, SANDRO wants each and every student to succeed.
Had him for CHM1311 and again for CHM1321 because I loved him that much. His marking scheme is so generous (especially for CHM1321) you get marks for everything. Do the practice questions on Sapling and the practice exams. Hilarious, kind, adorable old man who makes chemistry tolerable. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN YOU WONT REGRET IT
Great professor. Very easy class! He gives students a lot of bonuses and his marking scheme is very easy to do well. I ended up with an A + in the course because the material on the exams were very similar to the practice one he gave to students online. Would recommend taking 1331 with him anyway.
Really wants students to succeed and will shift marks on midterms and finals. Gives almost 15% in free marks with online assignments and tests. Lab portion worth very little which is frustrating but still do the work. Gives lots of practice from past exams and do all of them and you will do amazing on the final. Pay attention and take notes.
He is really good.
Cares about his students passing. To pass, just do assignments - they're mostly online and match exams given. He teaches great and he's funny, just catching up is hard because LOTS of material to cover. Easy A if you know what you're doing. I just didn't study hard enough for his class
Sandro is such a great prof! He explains things very well and is incredibly approachable after class if you have any questions. Likes to use WileyPlus very often. Work load consists of pre-lecture quizzes, post lecture assignments, 2 midterms, and a final. Super nice guy!
Overall I think he's a good prof. His lectures are not boring so its easy to keep attentive in class but sometimes his teaching is not as clear as it could be. He's quite approachable and usually answers your question on the spot, however if you send him an email, his responses are quite vague and don't fully answer the question asked.
Extremely sweet, and gives a lot of free marks. He can be a bit hard to understand sometimes because he really goes in depth with the topics and they can get confusing, especially for the mechanisms. Midterms are short and fairly easy--lots of multiple choice. Overall, extremely caring and really cares about his students.
Dr. Gambarotta is hilarious. I love reading his emails because they are WILD. He's not the best prof ever, but he's laid back and his tests are pretty easy with lots of bonus questions. Also, he doesn't test you on the lab skills (which is a HUGE plus). My advice is to practice the mechanisms, and do his old midterms that he posts.
I don't know how to say about this professor, he does not really teach you anything in class, you have to learn by yourself.
Great prof! very energetic and consistently keeps you up to date on bright space!
Sandro is always in a good mood, very energetic. Super accessible outside class, responds to emails within an hour. He does tons of examples. Gives bonus questions on midterms. Study for midterms from past midterms and tutorials posted on his website.
Sandro was a very interesting prof to listen to. He is very energetic and enthusiastic about the course. An issue with him is concerning how he taught where he just really read calculations and steps in his slides which means you will have to go back and review it. He is very helpful with understanding concepts. His examinations are also fair.
Gave a good amount of free marks (attendance, boosted a letter grade, curves tests) all without asking, basically the reason I passed. Very nice teacher and caring, his tests are fair too chem is just a really hard subject for most regardless.
Funny guy. Understanding human. Rather boring lectures. Turns the lights too low which make you sleepy. All in all, a good prof. Will take again.
Lectures are extremely boring and he just reads off his slides and essentially teaches you nothing. It's not worth going to class except for the fact that attendance is mandatory. FIrst midterm was alright, but the second midterm and exam were impossible. Despite all this, he's a pretty funny guy and means well.
He's an energetic lecturer but a little bit hard to follow at first. He's a good prof but his questions on the midterms were tricky, not that they were hard but that the question itself was stated weirdly and was easy to lose marks if you interpreted it wrong BUT he does let you make up your marks which is always amazing!
Don't take his course, unless you want to drop university.
Sandro was an amazing prof. He makes his lectures interesting by simply showing that he's a fun guy who is enthusiastic about what he does. Definitely do all the online assignments as they're easy points and do a bunch of practice questions from the textbook and his resources on his website to do well.
Sandro is a really great prof. 2 midterms and an exam, attendance is marked everyday. Do they wiley+ assignments and go to the DGDs. Organic chem is a tough subject but he does a great job of explaining it and is clearly very passionate!
Decent teacher but explains in a mediocre way. He doesnt respect the order of the chapters compare to the other org chem teachers. I went to tutorial sessions and it was pointless, gambarotta doesnt teacher in the same order nor uses the same reagents. Good teacher for previous chm class but not excellent for organic chem. Heavy topics/bad explanat
not good at explaining things, is impatient, blames terrible course avgs on students, lies about what will be on midterms, tells you not to buy textbook then puts all textbook questions on the midterm, not taking orgo ever again bc of him :)
This course was definitely not easy but it wasn't hard to do really well in the class. Just do a bunch of the textbook questions because he takes questions from there for his tests. He isn't the best prof, but his exams were way easier than all the other profs. He gives you lots of opportunities to do well in the class since he has a 5% easy bonus.
Really don't know how his rating isn't lower than 3.0. This man is singlehandedly responsible for my depression this semester. Orgo 1 sucks and I could not understand this guy in the lectures at all and fell asleep constantly. Only silver lining is that there were lots of free marks and tests were all textbook questions, which saved me in the end.
If you have him, SWITCH OUT! His lectures aren't well organized and he's very boring and difficult to understand. It's essentially a self-taught course. He DOES NOT take his questions from the textbook anymore. WileyPLUS is optional but it's a good grade booster. I learned everything from the DGD - he's absolutely the worst chemistry teacher.
He is a good guy, he attempts to teach the class his best. IMO he was not the best professor, however he does care about the success of his students. If you do poorly on the midterms but better on the final, he will calculate your grade to see what gives you the highest mark. Try a dif. prof if possible. Exams are not like textbook questions.
He was literally the worst prof ever. You basically have to teach yourself. He was funny at times but overall was not good. I wouldn't recommend him and would never take his class again.
MANDATORY attendance. That's the only reason for going to class tbh. He reads off the slides and expects you to listen, understand, and takes notes all while he talks about a ridiculously fast pace. You're going to have to learn the course yourself. Go to class but do your own thing otherwise it'll just be a waste of your time.
Do yourself a favour and switch out of this class immediately. He reads off his slides the entire time, all of the homework and all of the examples on this slides are nothing compared to what you'll see on midterms and finals. his tests are weighted with 40% being 2 questions of the 9 so good luck getting anything higher than 65 on them. Horrible.
I hate chem, and he didn't teach me anything. I ended this course more confused about chem then when I entered. He did not teach it well at all and his exams were out of such few marks that two or three mistakes really brought down your grade. Also has an accent, difficult to understand. Takes in class attendance.
Very mixed feelings about this prof. At first, he is very hard to understand; however, you do adapt to it over time. He happens to be quite funny. His lecture slides are not useful, as the solutions to the examples shown are hard to follow. The hardest questions found on the Wiley Plus are usually also on midterms and the exam. Difficult overall.
Very sweet man but terrible teacher. Just reads off the slides. Only teaches theory but tests on math. If you can get a different prof I would.
Very good prof, many extra grades.
This website is biased; people will rate a prof really good simply because they ended up with an A, this is the only reason he has a 3.0 (he boosts). Maybe you'll get an A but you will learn NOTHING. He spends his time going on tangents about industry and barely spends time on the type of questions you'll see. Do the Wiley, practice Q's in slides
Sandro is a hilarious professor. He makes his lectures fun and likes to explain how the stuff you learn will apply to real world application/future courses. Pretty easy A+, just show up to class, study and do the assignments. Pretty much an extension of grade 12 chemistry, doing mostly the same things with a bit of new topics!
Sandro is one of the funniest professors here. He's like the best Italian grandpa you never had. Midterms were tough and the final was ridiculously long (almost no one could finish it) but with assignments, attendance marks and the generous lab grade, it's pretty hard to fail. Would recommend this guy! Also don't bother buying the textbook for this
For a 4th year course, there was very little material covered. Most of it is just rehashing the prerequisites. Very boring and barely teaches. Made a lot of inappropriate jokes about suicide and COVID-19. I feel like I learned nothing and wasted a lot of time. One bright side is that it is the easiest 4th year chemistry course at uOttawa.
Dr. Gambarotta is a very kind and genuine professor who is easy to approach and gives great feedback. That being said, this class is not for everybody as it is, for the most part, independent study. However, the lecture notes are all you need to succeed in this class. The midterm and final exam follow the lectures to the point and were fair.
In all honesty, Gambarotta's SUPER caring and hilarious. I have a learning accommodation and he always makes sure to email me to ensure everything is properly set up for exams. Also, he's super quick at replying and a chill dude. I agree his lectures are a little iffy as well as his accent but he's a decent teacher nonetheless. It's Chemistry, so..
His lectures are hilarious and there definitely is a learning curve which at the end of the day is worth it. Very kind and gives weekly assignments/practice which is useful.
he has so much patience for student questions, goes over concepts thoroughly, and even gives marks just for practicing. assignments are very easy to do well on. on an online midterm, i wrote a number wrong but correct on paper. he still gave me the point. he does care about students and wants to see you succeed. one of my fav classes hands down.
Professor Gambarotta is amazing, there were many instances to raise your mark if you opted in for wiley+. He has a thick Italian accent so it is a bit difficult to understand him but his explanations for concepts are very good. He definitely knows his stuff. Only issue is with the light unit his slides are all theory but assignments are all math.
He saved my long life dream to become a physician and potentially cure cancer. I love u Dr. Sandro.
Anyone that gave low rating is just booty in chemistry. If you did really well in chemsitryu4 definitely take him.
Dr. Gambarotta is an enthusiastic, caring, and all around great prof. Explains concepts well and is very good online. Assignments are made to help you learn. Tests are flexible with him correcting technical errors.
If you have this and it is offered ONLINE by Sandro, TAKE IT! If you did well in 4U chem this class will be a lot of review. Hw and Exams were done on Wiley+, for exams we got 5 attempts per question (no part marks tho), and 3 attempts on the final. You kind of have to teach yourself but Sandro's section had the highest average because of attempts.
He uses a software W+ where you get 5 attempts per question for the exam/midterms which was great. That means not part marks so that screwed me over. He over simplifies a lot which wasn't helpful.
The W+ system was so nerve racking but he's a solid prof and responds quickly. While explaining the concepts he makes sure that you understand. Sometimes he stayed extra mins on zoom just to answer questions related to lectures and assignments. PROTECT HIM AT ALL COST. Just stay on track with him during lectures and you'll be fine.
An actual KING. Legend. Very funny, nonchalant and nice. Easy course if you did well in CHM4U.
I had Sandro in the fall term, and he was honestly a very kind man. He knows what he is talking about, and you can tell he cares about his students and wants them to be successful. He responds to emails himself and is very fast and willing to work with you. He uses Wiley+, which allows five tries per question!
Probably the best Prof I've had this semester! Super sweet and caring! Assignments were on Wiley+ and were super easy! Midterms were fair as long as you did practise questions but final exam was difficult. Definitely recommend taking CHM1311 with him!
I loved chemistry until I took his class. This man talks a million words per minute and teaches chemistry by reading off slide shows- better yet, he skips half of them. Have fun taking notes, if you have him...
I did not have an online class with Professor Gambarotta, however, I can already tell there is a large difference between how he teaches in class versus online. He does not explain how to answer questions in his lectures, and we are left to learn most concept by ourselves following the class.
He was a great prof - kept everyones attention He does try to put trick questions on the exams so watch out for that!
Sandro does not explain his slides in an effective manner which allows the students to understand the content fully.
Cool guy personality wise, but cannot effectively explain the material. Slides are very long and dense. Wiley+ system for assignments is very good, but the Wiley+ textbook really isn't.
Anyone who claims to have an issue with Dr. Gamobarrotta is someone who deserved the grade they got. I have never had such a humorous, easygoing, professor. His marking scheme is incredibly fair. If you attend lectures and do the practice assignments you will be guaranteed a good grade.
Seriously BEST CHEM PROF!! He sometimes goes a bit fast but his slides are 10/10 easy to follow. That w/the W+ assignments should prep you for the exams very well. He is extremely dedicated to teaching and is accessible outside of class. He makes chem easy to understand and breaks it down to a simple level- you do need to put the work in though.
Lectures are not very helpful; he is not very good at explaining topics and reads off his slides often. The Wiley+ assignments are helpful, but the online textbook is not practical. Many of the topics covered in this course were covered in 4U chem.
Great prof. The midterms are mostly W+, so pay attention to the assignments. Very easy to do well if you put the work in. He is fair and gives you a chance to do well. His lectures are sometimes hard to follow, but once you get the hang of it, you can pick out the important parts. Definitely attend class because he gives a lot of exam hints.
His class was dreadful, his lectures are boring and so long, and he formats his class opposite of the labs, so you will be learning different content than the lab at the time, making it difficult to apply your knowledge. He is barely understandable, plus he doesn't cover any questions in depth, so you have to go to your discussion group.
Highly recommend taking him. His lectures can feel boring at times but he tries to keep the class engaged by making jokes. His midterms were incredibly similar to the weekly assignments, so if you do those you'll do fine on the midterms. The final was also similar, and he did a help session with questions from our exam. Also many bonus points!
He is a really nice professor, and is always there if you need help. Most of the content in his class is from 4U chem, he cracks jokes and his assignments are great for your mark. It is not an easy class and his teaching style is not for everyone. But if you work hard, you can do well.
He keeps lectures enjoyable with his humour and good stories. I found his example based lecture style easy to follow, and the content of his assignments was closely related to the exam questions. He provided many options for extra credit and bonus marks as well. Overall the course was very well organized by a well rounded and experienced professor.
Great professor, and really clarifies concepts during lectures. His midterm and final questions are straight from assignments and textbook. Do those questions and understand them and you should be fine. Some TAs will take off marks because of simple math errors or sig figs, so watch out and pay attention to your work. Make sure to participate.
Teach everything to yourself because I ever understand what he talks about in his lectures. But he gives a lot of bonus marks and exams are Wiley questions. Easy mark if u did well in 4U chem.
His lectures were a bit boring as he talked a lot with occasional jokes. He is very helpful when you have any problems or ask for help. Since he talks a lot, we were a bit behind towards the end and had to catch up within a week. The midterms were not terribly difficult, definitely redo the homework questions and practice problems. DGD is useless.
Overall, he's a pretty good professor. His lectures can drag on forever it feels like at times, but other than that no major issues. The wiley+ assignments are really helpful for the exams as a lot of the questions were very similar. The assignments and wiley+ home midterm are also pretty much a free 20% so make sure to do them.
Lectures were pretty useless except for the last one which was a review session for the final. Otherwise he just reads directly from the slides which contain a lot of mistakes. Ended up teaching myself from the slides. Was pretty hit or miss whether or not the practice exams were gonna be anywhere near what was on the actual exam.
The course is hard in general so its natural that there will be negative feedback about hi. His Wiley+ thing saved my life. Read the textbook and do the homework cause thats where the midterms are from.
Sandro may not have been the best at teaching, be he was so fun. He did just mostly read off his slides so you don't reeeally need to go to class, but some things that he adds are helpful. The first midterm was really difficult and most people failed, but the final was fair and relatively easy. He gives a lot of opportunities for free marks as well
I took this course a few months ago, and I still can't forget how awful it was. The professor was not helpful with his students from the beginning, and his lectures were overwhelming. The three midterms he held were tough, and the class average was really low. I don't recommend him.
There a lot of homework questions to boost your grade which is nice
Sandro is not a good lecturer and a lot of the things he says don't matter, but the class is easy to do well. Flexible grading scheme, lot of free marks, big bonus question on the final... just make sure go to the DGD's to learn the material and use all of the questions in Wiley + to study for the midterms and final.
