Set your alarm for the end of class
chem is hard to make interesting, but he tries. slow, but not bad!

he's pretty monotone but besides that he's not bad at all
VERY nice guy. Monotone voice and notes are disjointed at times.
He tries soooo hard, you can't ask for anything more.

Wonderful teacher.
Chem is boring to begin with....i loved the ****s joke
very friendly, helpful and knowledgable
Good guy, clear teacher, fair tester, helpful. What else do u want?
as monotone as he can be, good-enough presentation, blah, average
Cute and tries to make chem funny, to many examples, not enough explanations
monotone yes, but also funny and explains well and very helpful
a little boring, but very clear and gives excellent notes
Makes sure you get the point. Oh and he always says funny little things.
Monotone. He cracks jokes that you only get if you're paying attention.
the best...thinks about life...not only chem
Avoid temptation to skip/nap b/c notes are thorough, tests fair. very nice guy
very boring, bad notes, unfair tests, and doesnt care about students!
very nice, fair tests, helpful, easy to understand
Knows his stuff, but cannot teach
Great professor. Helpful and cares about students.
Very nice, caring person. Text is key for understanding this course
Boring, but not too hard to listen to. My friend thinks he's hot, but I do not.
funny but boring, reading text is 100% necessary
His dry humor makes it bearable. You can tell he's bored teaching low level chem but tries anyway.
Hard to understand sometimes, mummbles a lot.
My mind almost left my body from boredom, but he knows what he's talking about. It would be nice if he talked faster though...
May be a brillant chemist, but is an awful teacher
My gf saw him working out at the gym and was impressed. Oh yea, he's a goodlyish prof, kinda boring though. Textbook > class.

has an issue with brain farts
soooo hard and soooooo BORING!!!!! He is meant to be in a lab, not a classroom.
okay, he is a bit monotone, but its so cute when he grins at his own jokes! his quizes are easy if you just do the questions. stay until he's done talking instead of packing up early like everyone else
Briggs' lectures should be recorded and played to help children go to sleep.
Great teacher, his class is very clear. He goes at the perfect pace and leads one thought right into the next. Perfect teacher for this class
Very helpful when you go see him but his notes are a little sloppy.
Very nice guy...how's anyone supossed to make chem interesting..he tries man..he tries. He's monotone but i'd suck even more if i was a chem prof. His exams didnt give anyone enuf time to finish tho..class average was 52% for first midterm.
he was a pretty good teacher
lectures were nap-inducing and apparently without a plan or visible logical connection between topics. his monotone, no excitement style didn't help either -- no class participation or critical thinking involved. i love memorizing textbooks.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
ok ya he's got a monotone and actually still writes on the chalkboard but its a good pace for the morning classes. tests were too long and his notes were not very clear...just wrote down a bunch of chemical rxns w/o clear explanation.

stuff he writes on the board are not so helpful; reading the textbook is faster than how he teaches; i give him credit for trying to use humour in his monotonous voice; should really change his voice or something
Nice guy. Notes a little incomplete and somewhat unorganized. But GOOD LORD IS HE A BORING LECTURER!!! His voice is the most monotonous voice I've ever heard in my life and the only way I managed to stay awake was coffee: lots of it.
Sure, chem 102 was incredibly boring with him, but you have to at least partially blame the material. He was great for 232, and never tested you on anything that wasn't in the notes. Very fair tests, and a nice guy who tries with humour.
A little boring, yes. Difficult at times, and not the best notes, but I did enjoy his lectures. He is helpful, and tries to help out!
good proff
I will not take his classes ever again.
A great man, but God is this class boring. Bring a pillow for your pillow and set your alarm for the end of class.
Dr.Briggs is probably my favourite professor. His tests are straight forward, and his lectures aren't as bad as others have stated. It might get alittle boring at times, but name a course where the material doesn't! Check out his personal website, definatly got some cool stuff on there.
Mr. Briggs seems like such a nice guy, i always felt like crying when everyone would get up near the end of class and leave before he was done talking. His jokes are cute(groan)! i found the tests fair and the lectures comprehensive, except for the organic chemistry which didn't seem very organized.
IN lecture he is very hard to understand and follow, although he is very helpful during office hours...just stay there untill you understand!!!
his notes are neither here nor there, so incredilbly confusing. he's willing to help outside of class time, but you can tell he really doesnt want to. very condescending. i had to switch into another section, and actually performed much better afterwards.
I heard things about Briggs and was initially afraid to be in his class. But he seemed pretty cool and i somehow managed to stay awake for every single class. the material isnt the greatest and his organization isnt great either but he tries and as long as you learn the stuff from the text its fine.
I feel for Dr. Briggs in this class...It's really dry and he just doesn't seem suited to lecturing to 150 bored first years. But he tries, and if you attempt to engage him and keep up with the material, that will help. Otherwise, you will fall asleep, guaranteed.
The quizzes were generally tricky, the labs were super easy but very long and the final seemed easier than 231. Briggs is a great prof, can get fairly boring, but its chemistry!
Thank you Dr. Briggs! He taught this course super well. After feeling 231 was completely over my head he showed me that a good instructor makes all the difference. Notes were awesome, and tutorial before the final was invaluble. Tests are really fair. He does a great job with this course!
This man had an uncanny way of putting me to sleep with his monotone voice. He is a very intellegent man, but his teaching skills are a little weak. His notes aren't the best and he jumps around a fair bit. I'm not exited to be in his lectures next year (but I have no choice).
He knows his stuff, but you have to be awake and see beyond the lack of lecture stimulation. His sense of humor comes out every now and then. Great smile. Great guy. The course is tough... stay ontop of EVERYTHING!! And buy the old finals to study!! Memorization is the key!
Dr. Briggs is a nice guy but his monotone is killing me!! It always feel like he's draining the energy out of me. Sometimes he spents too much time talking about what he says is unimportant. Blah blah blah .. for 5 mins or write on the board and then tells us that's not really related to our topic. Now i really don't know what's neccessry for notes
Yes, his voice is monotone, but you just have to accept that fact and get over it. He knows his stuff and has pretty decent notes, and if you're willing to put in the effort and stay awake in class, it's not hard to be successful in his classes. PS, look out for his hidden sense of humour (eg "****s in a field" lecture...)!! :-)
Sandy is an extremely nice guy, but hard to listen to. To be successful in his class and understand his lectures, you really have to do the reading in the text before class. If you want a prof who will explain things really well, check out Balfour. He's amazing! :)

Really awesome guy, he has the coolest shoes ever, although the class was kinda boring. Awesome guy though. Apparently he hiked to the north pole. Anybody who does that is awesome in my books.
This course was boring, but Dr. Briggs made it much less hellish than it could have been. Old exams are easily available, and he tends to use the same questions.
This is a prof, who's voice lulls you to sleep, its as though he wants you to fall asleep - so he can sneak that F into your grade while you dream of A's.
I found him very hard to listen to for long periods of time without falling asleep. His instruction was not adequate enough to pass any midterms without intensive study of the text provided. Not worth attending his class.
Many find Dr Briggs boring, but if you pay close attention, he throws little jokes into his lectures. Pretty amusing. Really good. I would take his class again.
Very boring lectures. His low, flat voice put me to sleep. He gets carried away with the math and calculations instead of building the concepts.
He does have a way of making things sound like they're not important, then you see it on the midterm. But if you don't fall for that, he's a really nice, easygoing guy - I think that secretly he's kind of a hippie - I like him. Just read the text and go to class - he does tend to follow the text fairly closely.
He is a cool guy, has a dry sense of humer. That said, I wouldn't reccomened him as a prof. I had him for 231 and 102. He is really unorganized, he changes his problem questions as he solves them and jumps all over the place. Just read the text.
Briggs is an awesome prof! He really cares about teaching, and is very available to help out his students. He had some pretty cool tidbits about orgo that he shared in class. Great guy! And, how cool is that that he's a climber and treks in the Arctic!
This man is awesome. He's so boring he's hilarious. Constant monotone during every lecture, but despite this, is clearly intelligent. Goes out of his way to help students. Class midterms are brutal hard.
excellent proff - easy to understand and very willing to help students
VERY smart. People say hes boring, but you have to listen to what hes saying, and youll find hes one of the most interesting profs at uvic. Makes chemistry as easy as possible, and is more than happy to see students out of class. He has chem 101+102 set up with the most support at uvic: help center, lots of TAs, exam tutorials, old exam copys etc.
Absolutely terrible prof, had friends in other section who did at least 2 letter grades better, there was a difference of more than 20% between marks on some of the midterms. Get Wan if you can, but Briggs is unavoidable for 232, good luck, you'll need it.
Hes not very conceptual kind of guy seems to have difficulties explaining them. However he should have been a math teacher because when it comes to stoichiometry and the physics of chemistry he could not be better.
Gives a lot of practice quizzes, which are almost exactly like the test. Just do them and the suggested probs and his course is easy. Such a cool prof, I dont know what some people are talking about. Check out national geographic oct 1996!!! He owns Uvic!
He's a fine teacher if you let him stick to his teaching plan...just don't ask any questions because it takes him forever to answer and it'll be unclear anyways. The average grade for his section was lower than the other prof's. He is a nice guy though!
Great teacher. I was really scared to take chemistry because I dropped it in high school. However, I found his course and the 102 that I am in right now much much easier to follow than the high school material. Great prof who tries his best to make a fairly dry subject interesting. He's even better in Chem 231.
Good lectures. The textbook is excellent! Do all of the suggested homework problems and you will do fine. As for Dr. Briggs, he's really nice, and throws in a few pretty funny jokes.
The midterms were RIDICULOUS. I studied hard for that class, and found that the last midterm was nigh impossible to write. His "review sessions" in class were laughable, but only retrospectively, since we only knew after the midterms how unrelated what he covered was. I was truly disappointed with his class. The text was also filled with errors.
Hes boring, monotone, and all he does is draw random arrows, while hacking up a lung. You will only get a good mark, if you do the suggested problems. Pay Attention to his dracula joke and mercedes benzene joke.
He is the most monotone teacher I have ever had. I don't understand how he thinks people are listening to him when all he does is mumble to the blackboard. He uses just the blackboard with mediocre writing. The other profs use power points which are a lot more helpful. He however does not even have online notes. Take only if necessary.
When I was signing up for chem this year I saw there were two sections - one at 8:30 in the morning (and I'm not a morning person) or one at 10:30, but with Briggs. So I took the 8:30 one. His class averages are always ridiculously lower than the other sections. I would say to avoid if you can.
If you have ever seen the Charlie Brown cartoons, then you know who Woodstock is (a Monotone bird, that you never understand) and if you have taken this course you know who Woodstock is... Briggs is really boring and just mumbles a lot! He cracks some "whitty" chemistry jokes, but the laughs I think were more at him, than with him...
What he said was easy enough to follow. He definitely did not give a very high level idea of the subject matter, and it was difficult to put it all together. I think there were even a few things on the final exam he didn't quite cover... the other section had an advantage, as their instructor was really good.
Likes to use the board a lot and will write messy notes. Shy in lecture, and mumbles a lot. Rarely explains topics very well. He likes to do lecutre popcorn style and will bounce around topics, and will go back to a topic covered a week ago mid lecture and bounce back. This was really annoying since he didn't explain how anything connected. Avoid!
WHATS THAT BRIGGS?? Needs to talk a little louder/not mumble, also needs to become a little more stoked on chemistry like the rest of us. Boring lectures, might be all right if you can pay attention, but if you have troubles paying attention theres no way your gonna learn anything.
Sandy Briggs is the master. Anyone who says otherwise isn't interested in chem. He's a little quiet, but if you listen to him, hes incredibly smart, and will teach you way more than you need to know. To the whiners, sorry if he doesn't baby you through the course. Turns out in university you have to actually work at it! An amazing prof.
His class sucks. His class is not that useful. Midterm and what he've taught in class are not related. Also, his class is not interesting AT ALL.
monotone and disinterested in teaching; is clearing uncomfortable working in front of 200 students and talks to the chalkboard a lot.
Doctor Briggs is a great proffesor. Students simply think they can go to class, listen to a lecture and do well on the tests. Chem 231 takes a lot of effort and time of your own. If you study hard, you will do well regardless of the prof. Dr. Briggs is very helpful if you approach him and if you read the text before class, lectures make sense
like everyone else said, monotone, notes are terrible and lectures are very boring. The best way to succeed is to study the textbook and get old quizzes and exams.
Monotone, sheepish, unclear and just plain boring. Briggs probably knows what he's talking about, but he has no teaching skill, is unprepared for lectures, and can't keep a class interested.
Briggs is awesome, but that might just be for who he is outside of the classroom; it's this character for whom I grew a solid sense of respect for his openness, vast knowledge of chemistry, and grew to love his (subtle but freaking hilarious) sense of humour. Give him some credit regardless, he bagged many first ascents of the Island's mountains!
His classes are very boring sadly, and he does not teach you what you need to know, especially techniques for the calculations... Teach yourself from the textbook, it sucks but if you actually read it you will learn what you need to know.
Yes, Briggsy is monotone, and yes, organic sucks. However, just study the text, prepare for the quizzes, and this class isn't bad at all. Briggs has a great, but very subtle sense of humour. Listen for it! The guy is hilarious. Also, very kind and helpful in office hours.
I want to strangle myself everytime I'm in his lecture! He has no skeletal notes online, he spends half a lecture on things that we already know or we don't need to know. He is honestly the worst prof ever! And currently, another chem102 class by another prof is more than 1/2 way through the next topic and we haven't even finished the one we're on!
If he taught us what we would be tested on, I wouldn't mind his lectures. But I can't help but feel like the time I spend listening to him is.. worthless. I work hard in all my classes, but for this class, I've never felt so unsure about the material. Midterms are nothing like what is gone over in class. Can't wait to see the final exam...
Briggs is extremely clear when he explains complicated problems. You have to listen in class because your notes come entirely from what you hear. He's fine as a prof, just make sure read your textbook and not just your notes.
His voice is so crazy soothing...like Bob Ross almost. I seriously fell asleep about 3/4 of all the classes. His notes are confusing and he spent about two classes talking about a section that was omitted from the exam. The textbook is great, I studied solely from that and did quite well in the course.
Lectures were interesting, but NOTHING he talked about was on the exam. I had to teach myself everything from the textbook and from Codding's notes. He either doesn't realize or doesn't care that his lecture material doesn't match the tests. Apparently Codding is much better.
A horrible teacher. He shows zero interest in the material he is teaching. his notes are useless, and he has an aweful habit of writting one word on the board and talking for 20 minutes about random material not needed for the course. If you can, avoid at all cost, and if you cant, avoid taking his class in the morning, his dull monotoned voice wil
Completely useless. You might as well not even attend his lectures. I ended up teaching MYSELF pretty much the entire course by spending my nights in the library learning out of the textbook. He is disorganized, seems uninterested in the material, and when asked questions, rambles about something else, not answering the inquiry at all.
great sense of humour, really knows his subject. seems unenthusiastic in class, but I would be too if I had to talk over idiot first years. i have found it necessary to read the textbook well to supplement his notes, although he has great slides to help you visualize concepts.
While teaching first year chemistry must get boring year after year, Dr. Briggs is very dry and unenthusiastic about the course material, making it very hard to pay attention in class. You definitely need to read the textbook to supplement his notes.
One of the most horrible profs I have ever had, I would highly advise against having Briggs as a teacher. Most dry and monotone lectures I have attended, also completely useless.
I had Briggs for 102 and thought he was awful, uninterested and horribly monotonal. For 232 though he was great! Funny jokes, improved clarity, and tries to teach you things that may be relevant to your interests. Yes he is a bit mumbly, but just sit close and you really appreciate his knowledge and enthusiasm!
Attend his class if you have insomnia. It will help you fall asleep right away.
Although his voice put me to sleep on numerous occasions, he is very knowledgeable and passionate about chemistry. Unfortunately, he often didn't give any context to topics and would bounce around between topics, so notes I took from his class were never clear. Had to spend a lot of time with the textbook to clarify what he taught in class.
Although he has a boring voice, I found Dr.Briggs was a great teacher, didnt teach you anything that you didnt need to know, and told you everything that would be required of you on the test, do the practice quizzes and exams and you are GOLDEN! easy A! Organic Chem (232) is supposed to be really hard but if you keep up with readings your fine!
He is sooo boring! I can NOT help falling asleep! He just mumbles and mumbles and mumbles and mumbles up there.. and his notes are terrible ... confusing writings on the chalkboard..if you still want to be interested in a subject, choose another prof..
I found it extremely hard to concentrate on his monotone ramblings. Expect to teach yourself this course.
Had him in 101 and decided to take him 102. He might have a monotonic voice but he's really good at explaining and tells u what exactly to expect on a test. Really helpful; ask him anything and if its irrelevant he'll say so. Just try to listen to him and u'll get everything. His quality of notes have increased too.
He is a bit dry but does explain things well if you can pay attention/stay awake. My only gripe is how he tries to indoctrinate students with his politics about global warming. It doesn't matter if he is right or wrong.. talking about the politics has no place in an introductory Chem class!
People say he is boring and while he may be a bit dry at times he truly is an awesome chem teacher. He gives great practice problems and teaches well. Maybe not a class for first thing in the morning but worth taking
An excellent prof despite initial impression. Really a wealth of knowledge and willing to help, even so in office hours. Also has a wicked sense of humor if you care to listen carefully.
Briggs is a solid prof. He knows his stuff, and teaches it clearly. Granted, his lectures can be quite monotonous, but if you listen closely you get a hint of his sarcasm. Not an incredibly riveting professor, but definitely knows what he's talking about.
Briggs doesn't show much confidence in front of a large crowd. He is extremely monotone and will put you to sleep any day at any time. I found it pretty useless to go to his class. He is not very good at explaining the information, he is very slow and when he is asked a question he never seemed to know the answer. BORING
Worst professor I have ever had. Lecture notes are useless - no structure or logical flow. Doesn't explain any major concepts. Had to teach myself out of the textbook, which is not easy for organic chemistry.
Dr. Briggs is awesome. He is hard to listen to at 830 in the morning because he is monotonous but he's a great teacher. Super helpful if you see him outside of class too. Tests are very fair. Go to class, do the work, you'll do well.
Good prof. Very monotone, but he enjoys his subject and is very knowledgable. I found myself teaching myself some material via Youtube because he either didn't teach it in class or it was gone over quickly.
Has some crazy stories about exploring the arctic. Made chem relatively pain-free.
Worst professor I have had in Chemistry. His lectures contain no flow, plus the guy is just SO monotone ,you will be working on other subjects or sleeping. Quizzes were relatively fair and so was the exam. Whenever you ask him a question, he is just so rattled and he bluffs or says "not in scope of this course" .OCHEM is hard enough as it is
He seems like a nice guy but he wasn't a great prof. Lectures were boring and confusing, he didn't really explain concepts, he just randomly did some examples. I had to rely on the textbook the whole course. Quizzes were difficult and the exam was brutal. Worst part is that he's the only prof teaching Chem 231.
Briggs is a nice guy, but not a good teacher. Lectures were difficult to follow, notes were poor, his voice is incredibly monotone. The textbook saved my life. I found it was WAY easier to read the textbook and study with friends, I'm sure most people would agree with me. Quizzes were fair, but the final exam was tough.
He is a nice/smart guy but doesn't explain the course well at all. I stopped going after the first month and taught myself with the book. The 5 tests are annoying because you're constantly studying, but they definitely bring your mark up since the final is extremely difficult. The hardest material comes last so don't underestimate the course/final.
Dull, kind of monotonous voice and a mic that was a little too quiet. On the few chances I got to see other much more interactive professors teaching the material I realized that having to force yourself to concentrate doesn't have to be the status quo. I learned almost everything from the book; it's impossible to use the lecture on its own.
I don't know where all these negative comments come from. Sandy is the best. His explanations are well paced, easy to follow, and well planned. He has a lot of teaching experience, and it shows in his classes. His tests are extremely fair; he doesn't try to trick you, nor are the tests time pressured.
Boring...dull, didn't want to go to class.
Listen closely and you will catch his jokes. Funny, cute man. But, his lectures are dry and hard to pay attention in. Mostly taught myself from the text because of that. Course was very easy the whole time but got surprised while studying for the final, didn't even know we had learnt that many reactions. Study prac tests and you can do very well.
It's ironic that he's the only prof in the chemistry department who does nothing but teach, and yet he's the worst prof in the department. Lectures are mind-numbingly boring, explanations are unclear, and he can't answer questions in class. I used to love chemistry but this was the worst class of my first year.
The lectures are 99% of the time just quick, summarized versions of the textbook which are very difficult to understand on their own without having first read the textbook, making the point of the lectures questionable. I guess it helps as a kind of preview to what you'll be getting into. Try to find another chem prof who will be more interactive.
He is not a very good prof, does not explain things very well at all. His quizzes do not prepare you for the final exam in any way. I'm sure he's a nice guy, but I feel students grades will suffer because of his teaching style and lack of clarity.
Nice guy, not a good educator. For a class like organic chemistry, summarizing the lecture slides doesn't cut it. Never, ever went over examples in class, which is the only way to learn ochem! Tries to be helpful outside of class but is extremely awkward to talk to. Stares at the wall on the opposite side of room instead of addressing you.
The first half of this course was really easy. It got hard at chapter 6. Briggs covers the parts of the textbook that will be tested, gives examples and answers questions some questions. It helps if students ask good questions. The worst part of this course was the solutions manual. It just presented answers and didn't provide much explanation.
Hard class, not a good professor. Can't focus because he is so monotone.
Briggs is a favourite. The course is somewhat difficult but I find he does a good job of explaining certain principles and he knows what he's talking about. Some people complain about him not explaining certain concepts, but if you ask questions that don't pertain to the course, don't expect a full answer! A bit awkward but dry humour is GOLDEN.
Does not deserve his position in the chemistry department. He can't teach organic chemistry properly and is very unapproachable. Took away any desire I had to learn the material. I will NEVER take a class with him again.
Briggs is a fantastic prof. I have had him before and did not appreciate his style, but have learned to really enjoy him. His dry humour is absolutely hilarious if you are paying attention. Very approachable, very helpful outside of class! Follow the questions that are recommended and you will do just fine.
I had Briggs for Chem 101, 102, and 231. Chem 101 and 102 you have a booklet so it makes it really easy but in chem 231 his notes are super confusing and you end up learning from the text book. He is a nice guy, though. I think his lectures would be very good if you went into them already reading the textbook but if not… not so much
Easily one of the best profs I've had at Uvic. Great slides, super approachable, really clear explanations. I didn't have to touch my textbook because he is so thorough.
Very monotone and boring. with his lecture slides and notebook it is hard to understnad notes you're writing down in time to go onto the next ones. I feel like I'm mindlessly racing to take down notes instead of writing them down to understand.
He is boring, I can hardly stay up in his class. If there was any other professor I choose them. Knows his stuff but can't manage to stay awake
His lectures are incredibly boring, and he relies on slides for us to copy down as he mind-numbingly drones on reading word for word what's on screen. Avoid his class if you can; he really takes the fun out of an entire course.
He is an amazing teacher! I never ONCE used the textbook because it confused me to no end, but I started to take good lecture notes from class and didn't have to read the text! Quizes are EASY and final exam was easy to study for from the class notes. Just go to class and take good notes!
Briggs is incredibly boring. I cant count the times I have fallen asleep in his lectures. He does a poor job of answering questions in class, and I found that most of my understanding of the material came from the textbook. I'd avoid him if you can, he makes this interesting subject matter so so SO dull.
Briggs is a fair professor. His lectures are very boring and can put you to sleep but he explains the material well. His midterms and finals reuse questions from old midterms and finals quite often, so study the old finals and midterms he posts!!
Sandy is really boring and extremely monotone. He has poor teaching skills and made the class really unenjoyable. I am a chem major who loves chemistry - and I disliked the class a lot. I can't imagine how other students who aren't as fond of chemistry felt about the class. He basically mumbled incoherent thoughts when trying to answer questions.
Has a dry sense of humour. Lecture style was good. Didn't really make good use of the slides/course notes, instead making heavy use of verbal explanations and the whiteboard. Gets worked up about people making noise during class (and rightfully so).
Had for 231 as well, great prof- really helpful if you go to his office hours. Slides are right out of the text, so you can follow along however you chose. Highly recommend him!!!
Clear, concise. Dry humour that you have to listen for, but really great- you usually crack up several hours after class when you finally get it.
Briggs is a nice guy with good intentions and he's been teaching for awhile, but he needs to stop!! His explanations are very confusing and his notes are so unorganized. You are better off relying on the textbook and attend classes just to see what he emphasizes. DO NOT FALL BEHIND! Avoid if possible, trust me!
Briggs is an alright guy, but he is not needed to do well in this course. The best piece of advice I can give is just study the textbook, it is clear and detailed and has everything you need to know. He will only skim the textbook in class, but you really need to read it for his exams. The test are fair and the lab was okay, not too hard.
Briggs may be boring and very monotone in his delivery, but his tests are very fair and what you would expect. Definitely study the textbook and your notes from class and you'll do great. For the final, just study past final exams. He takes his questions directly from there so there are never any surprises in his exams. The lab wasn't too bad.
Briggs may be boring and very monotone in his delivery, but his tests are very fair and what you would expect. Definitely study the textbook and your notes from class and you'll at least survive. For the final, just study past final exams. He takes his questions directly from there so there aren't surprises.
Briggs is a cool dude. If you sit near the back, you'll miss how much he smiles, laughs, and makes jokes to himself. He is extremely respectful of students and a huge help in office hours. Down to earth outside of class, and a really accomplished mountaineer to boot.
I really like Briggs; he is usually monotone but is so subtly humorous that sometimes you don't even realize how funny he is. The best part is that he just keeps going and doesn't stop or wait after a joke so you're like: what did he say? The notes are easy to understand. Also, Briggs is really good at answering emails and questions right away.
When another student asks a questions, he will give a long explanation to answer, but he will not repeat the question, so it won't be of any help to you. He clearly knows what he's doing and is a very smart man, he just doesn't convey his knowledge well to students. If you really need lectures in order to do well, consider switching profs.
His class was by far the most boring class I've ever been in. He made lectures seem longer and his voice is an automatic sleeping pill... It's like someone's just talking-NOT TEACHING! He's not interactive with the class at all and most of the time when questions are asked, he ends up saying that he's not sure! Not recommended at all!
Sandy's monotone voice sometimes almost puts me to sleep and he is not the best at emphasizing important details but he is helpful if you visit him during office hours and his email replies are detailed as well. Use MasteringChemistry, study from the textbook, and buy practice exams and you will ace this course easily.
His voice is very monotonous and makes it hard to focus.
He was a decent lecturer and he may not appear to be as funny or entertaining as others, but if you pay attention, he does have a pretty great sense of humour! In terms of content, it would be appreciated if he went over the iClicker questions and examples to deepen our understanding. Overall, a good prof and nice guy! :)
If you're not extremely interestedknowledgable in chemistry, you'll probably fall asleep.
Although Sandy doesn't have the most riveting voice to listen to, he is the smartest chem prof I have ever had. He clearly has an extremely good understanding of the material and is super helpful if you go to his office hours. A great mountaineer, intelligent man and genuine person.
Great prof with regards to knowledge and passion of material. Not the most interesting but he has a subtle sense of dry humour that's very easy to miss. Not necessary to attend class if you have the textbook as everything tested is in the text.
Dr. Briggs does little else than read directly off the prepared power point slides.
Briggs is pretty monotone when he teaches, which can make it hard to focus in class. You probably won't like him at the start of the class, but he grows on you over the term. Surprisingly funny guy at times, and when he is doing review classes and not just lecturing he is much more concise and teaches the material well.
His lectures are not interesting and it can be easy to fall asleep during class, but he explains tough ideas and concepts well and has very fair midterms and final exams
Briggs is an interesting guy - monotone and seemingly bored at times (although perhaps due to the fact that his knowledge of org chem vastly exceeds anything taught in 232) yet incredibly receptive to in-class questions and office hour queries. sit near the front of the class so you don't miss his incredibly disparaging and sarcastic jokes!
Goes at a good pace to make it easy to understand what is going on during class, but still quite boring. Has a joke about once a week.
I liked his character, since he tried to crack some random and twisted jokes, or he just made us laugh without even trying. Though his lectures always made me sleepy and was sometimes hard to focus.
If you go to his office hours, he explains a lot more then. Lectures are sometimes boring but sometimes you can't get all the marks just by looking at the course booklet we had to buy. Lots of it comes from WileyPlus I guess.
If you sit at the front, sometimes you'll see that he's pretty cool. Tests are hard as expected for Chem.
Going into this class, I was scared because I had heard bad things about Briggs. However, I was SO pleasantly surprised. Yes, he is monotone and can be hard to listen to, but he is extremely passionate about the material and really cares about you doing well. His tests are SUPER fair (make sure to study old finals!). Overall, great guy.
boring, not specific.
He takes down valid class information beofre it had even been up for a wekend, leaving anyone who hasn't copied it down in time because they were busy behind the rest of the class.
Seems like a nice guy, just has a very monotone voice and talks, not teaches.. he is clearly very intelligent and knows his stuff, he just feels to old to be teaching a class of 300
If you're a quick learner and pick up on chemisty fairly quick, pick Wan. However, if you are intimidated or if you struggle with chemistry, choose Briggs. Briggs, although incredibly monotone, keeps track of electrons on the board and is very thorough. I had Wan for Chemistry for Chem 231 and found he breezes through so much, Briggs will elaborate
The most boring prof I've ever had. His voice is low and quiet and just drags onnn, making it extremely easy to fall asleep in his lectures. He uses iClicker points as attendance, so you have to go to lecture (even though he just reads off the slide and you can get all the same info from the textbook). Textbook will save you! Luckily an easy read.
Avoid this professor if you can, I was unable to focus at all in his class because of his horrible monotone voice. Doesn't explain the material well at all, he basically just rewrites the textbook onto slides.
This prof clearly cares about his material, but fails to pass on that feeling to his students. The course is difficult and made even harder by Sandy's inability to explain the concepts clearly. You have to attend this class for iClicker participation, but don't kid yourself and learn through the textbook and MasteringChemistry or even a tutor.
Briggs can get very monotone and hard to focus in class, so I didn't find any reason to go to class when i can get better explanation online or from the text. He seems like a genuinely caring guy, and has a bit of dry humour but not a great lecturer. Overall, wouldn't take his class if i could, get ready to study from youtube and the textbook.
Sandy Briggs seems like he is probably an OK guy, but let me tell you - this guy is some next level boring. He is VERY monotone, and is often hard to hear. To be fair, the material of chem 150 is super dry, but Briggs did not make it any better. Midterms and the final were alright; you can pretty much get an A from pure, brain-dead memorization.
Thank god hes retiring now because ive never had a more boring, monotone professor. Test are way to short so one question can screw you over and there is only two midterms. He uses wileyplus which ill never understand why. Seems like a nice guy maybe he was just done with teaching.
Took Chem in first year and failed by a percent. This class was very difficult to stay focused in and there was very little help provided by the prof. I think he is a nice guy but his lectures were very boring.
