I can't think of even one nice thing to say
Will help you with anything if you ask. Tests are hard!
Sandy graded fairly, and always said hello and smiled in the hallways.
plays favorites
Just don't take her. She plays favorites.
Mrs. Hanson is the best Communication teacher i have ever had
Tests are extremely hard, nice teacher, really helpful, tries to associate well
great proff. knows her stuff, study hard for tests
I found her public speaking class somewhat easy if you stick to the quidelines.
Anal!!! Don't get on her bad side.... What the hell is an attendance policy in college?
Sandy is a GREAT professor. The information is straight forward, and she keeps you interested; class is not boring. Tests are hard, but all you have to do is follow the study guides!
Awful teacher DO NOT TAKE HER SHE IS REALLY MEAN!!! She will give you a C when you deserve an A!!!!!!!!! ****!!!!!!!!!!
Great teacher. You must do the reading, even just a little and the tests will be a breeze. If you talk to her, she's great help. Enjoyed the class. She keeps it interesting. Highly Recommended.
I don't know how anyone can like this woman...Nice on the outside, but really the devil. Tests are way to hard...

Real cool.. a little too redundant.. tests are relatively hard
Tests are extremely hard. Also, she takes a participation grade. How high school can we get?
Plays favorites...Not one of her fans.
Very nice person, helpful if you ask. Do the reading! Tests are difficult but definately doable if you read and pay attention. Fun class.
Pretty easy class overall. Tests are straight out of book. I found her to be nice and helpful. The only bad thing I can say is that she treats students in a very juvenile way...esp. with her attendance policy.
If you miss a day without a note from a hospital, you are in trouble. Demands three times more work than any other class. Attendance regulations are like the military. Good luck if you got too sick to get out of bed and get a DETAILED Dr. note.
Tests are tough, group work is fun. She is tough and requires a lot of work outside of class.
She was okay. Had to work a lot to maintain a good grade.
great teacher and the reason her attendance policy is so strict is because people take advantage of her niceness. By far one of the BEST teachers i have ever had. She didn't make me feel stupid and was very helpfull.
Sandy is a tough teacher, but also has favorites. Her tests count a lot, but her final paper can either make you or break you. Go to class...she has high school participation grades.
i actually learned in this class, she is very nice but does seem to pick favorites. Her grading is CRAZY, she is the toughest grader, it's ridiculous and her exams are hard because she is verrry tricky. you can bust your butt and still do bad.
One time me see shiny object on ground. Shiny object was soo shiny me stare and stare for hours until me find magic phone thayt dial fairland, me best student in communications, w/ honors.
You have to study the class notes and review the book to get a passing grade. Real anal about attendance, so use caution if thats an issue with you.
I love Hanson! She is one of the greatest professors I have had in college. She always shows concern about problems and questions. I enjoy her class bc of her fun attitude but you do have to study and be very familiar with the material. My biggest advice is read the book along with the notes!
nice lady, kinda looney... good class - it's fun. tests are hard. just participate in class and you'll be gravy.
Excellent teacher. I loved this class!
Her individual presentations is the biggest waste of class time i have ever seen. Everyone presents on a topic for the whole semister and it takes up about 60% of the class time every day. So you HAVE to come to class to be taught by other students then have to take her test. WORST
This class involves a lot of outside of work but is easy if you do the work. Tests are tough but the other assignments cushion your test grades if bad. Recommeded.
Easy as far as HMWK went. OF course, lots of outside class work b/c it deals with groups. Very easy on grades, minus the group paper. Just go to class, she has attendance policy.
This is the one of the worst professors I have ever had. She has class pets and she is so fake. Not helpful and she likes for students to suck up to her. She puts on a good show but it is not hard to see past her mask! She is VERY biased.
She has good intentions. She truly cares about the subject matter she is teaching as well as students. She attempts to cram to much material into one semester. Her Lectures allow you to understand the material but they DOES NOT prepare you for the Test. The individual presenations are informative but need to be scaled down in time.
Almost impossible to get an A with the way she grades. Entire semester is all about group work and will take a lot of outside of the class time. Tests are based mostly on book material and are pretty tough.
hanson definitely picks favorites in her class. she claims she "grades by the rules" and won't listen to you if you need a little help. the presentations are pointless, both group and individual. the group dropped my overall grade to a D because one person. take someone else if you can.
THE CLASS WAS OKAY....THE ONLY PROBLEM I HAD W/ HER WAS HER BIASNESS IN REGARDS TO PARTICIPATION IN HOW SHE MEASURES IT....I FEEL THAT IF THIS MEASUREMENT WAS OMITTED, THIS WOULD LESSEN THE AMOUNT OF BIASNESS DISPLAYED ON HER PART!!! VERY BIASED!
Interpersonal comm.--great class, homework is at a minimal and easy, tests are fair and from lecture and the book *she gives you a study sheet*, friendly, adds humor to the class, the only bad part is that she takes roll everyday and you only get 2 absences :o(
Take someone else!!!!
the only good thing about here is the knowledge she has of the subject. she has favorties and that def. shows in the grades she gives. plus she's always so perky which is NOT a plus at 9:00 am. unwilling to discuss grades with you.
Irksome and perky decribe this teacher. Attendence policy and hard tests. If you are not a pet of hers you are in trouble. Grading very biased.
her test are extremely hard. this is a small group communications class and you do a ton of group work.
Makes her students teach the class.. I learned absolutely NOTHING.. She doesn't use class time effectively. I don't feel prepared to take the advanced course.
do not take hanson. Students gave presentations all semester long, which took up 40 min. of a 50 min. class. She would try to cram in a short lecture at the end. Had to read book and teach myself material. She was not popular in our class. Take anyone else.
This class has a lot of outside work. Hanson is not interested in what the student say or feel, she just wants to push her believes on you. Textbook material is common sense but she puts "tricky" questions on the test and makes them hard to past. She grades hard and no matter how much work or how hard you worked, she will not give anyone an "A".
She gives a lot of outside group prject work and needs to be more mindful of student's time. You will spend more time meeting in outside groups than you will in class. And the test are out of control.
I really have enjoyed Mrs. Hanson's class. She knows the material and makes it very clear. There are student presentations but most of the time they're pretty interesting. The tests aren't hard as long as you read and do the study guide. Definitely recommend!
VERY bias! If u r sum1 who doesnt need to ask a lot of questions during lectures ur participation grade goes down, which is worth a big chunk of your grade. Very long/tedious student presentations. Lectures r an addition to text book material so u have to teach urself. Group presentation grade unfair, if 1person messes up everyone is penalized
The b**** is crazy...run for your lives!!!
I HATE HER! I wouldnt recommend anyone to take her class ever. She is biased, unfair and not very helpful. Her syllabus is ambiguous and so is her grading. I had her for two classes and probably should have learned my lesson the first time. I've warned you... she mya seem nice at first... but then in the end you'll understand when your screwed over
This professor is terrible, just think of everything a communications professor should not be - and that will describe Mrs. Hanson. (always right, unwilling to listen to the students, purposeful tricky questions on the test, chooses favorites, fake, thinks she is the CHOSEN ONE) PLEASE DONT MAKE THE MISTAKE OF TAKING HER!!!!!!!!! SHE'S A NASTY WOMA
Biased. Unclear. Too much outside work for this class. What was on the test was never discussed in class.Crazy Lady. No one wanted to hear about her personal life but we were forced to. Too many presentations.
RUN! Communications is just theory for her not a practice. "Those who can't, teach." Take someone else if you can or write exactly what she asks for because she doesn't understand anything vague.
Hanson is very inconsistent in her grading and often goes back on her word. Her attendance policy is ridiculous and if you ever question her methods she becomes hysterical. She is like an elementary teacher and whatever you do, no matter how hard it is-because she more boring than death itself-do not fall asleep in her class!
Please take someone else! She is the most terriable, unfair, biased and unhelpful! very bad professor!
PICK someone else to take the COMM classes you need! The lady's crazy, unless you happen to be one of her pets in class.
yeah she can be biased but her requirements are clearly stated in her syllabus and she never wavers in that. if you can ask a question here and there and just do what your told to, you should have no problem passing this class. also if you have a bad group, tell her and she will be more than compromising, however if dont u will suffer; obviously.
Extremely difficult grader. Picks favorites. Seems nice at first then becomes extremely difficult and even gives off an attitude. I enjoy public speaking, but not this class
Sandy Hanson is a Excellent teacher to take for this Class. Even though I hate Small Group Communications Class it's required. Be Sure to do all GROUP Work and Come to Class. Venture Day is Pretty cool. Take Her
She is a great teacher. She's always lively. Will enjoy entertainment and sense of humor if nothing else. Go to class because she does take attendance. Quizes come straight from the book and chapters in course packet. Even if you don't agree with assignments BS your way through and make it sound believable! Very specific!
She's a very lively teacher and her lectures are very interesting. She is a very picky and inconsistent grader. Attend class: she takes attendance daily. Her tests are mostly from the book so buy it.
She is a very interesting teacher, and is humerous. I can say that she is a little biased and has her fravorites in the class, If you arwe not her favorite you may have to work a bit harder for your grade. Do not ask her a question about the syllabus because she will not answer it. She has not sympathy for anyone.
Slackers do not take this professor! If you desire to become better at public speaking this is the professor to take. She's tough and will demand you do your best. I learned so much from Ms. Hanson. COMM majors, Ms. Hanson provides a strong foundation. Put in the work and the rewards will come!
Epitome of college bs. Too much work, she grades extremely critically. Took the first ever "online" class. HORRIBLE CONCEPT! The curriculum was not tuned to match online groups. Expects you to do the quality work of a in-class group even though we communicated via AUDIO once a week. None of her assignments make sense. Only plus is quizzes are easy.
Stay away! I made a B in her class but worked VERY hard. Her grading goes like this: she likes you, you pass, she doesn't, you're screwed. Doesn't give expectations for assignments and will tell you that it was done wrong. Very critical on discussion. Grades very hard. A lot of work for a 200 level course!
Took the hybrid class. All I have to say is that her grading is ridiculous. You do exactly what she says and still get a low grade on hw.
horrible professor, teach ? what teaching does she do. Alot of work quizzes every week and you would think that since shes a communication professor she would communicate with you, but not for her. One of the worst professor at UNCC youve been warned.
Never desired to post a rating on this site... but wow.. this class is definitely a no-no
Difficult class, but lots of grades to redeem yourself. Ask lots of questions regarding assignments as she is a harsh grader. Offers extra credit. Good professor and always willing to help.
At first, I really like Professor Hanson, she seemed really chill and the class was "easy" until we got our grades back. She grades wayyyy too hard for the amount of work you actually do in the class. Don't take unless you have to.
class is boring, reads off ppt slides & she has the nerve to have a course packet that u need purchase at the bookstore. She is a very tough grader & doesn't teach you anything you need to know pertaining to Health Comm. She mainly talks about her daughterfriends issues. expects too much & doesn't give that in return. learned nothing! ez exams
stupid class, stupid teacher. hard grader
Mrs. Hanson is awesome! Her class was VERY tough but i loved her. Take this class very seriously. Do the study guides for exams, do the extra credit, and go to class as much as possible (it helps in the end!!) My attendannce points helped me passed. Take your time on assignments and do them above and beyond bc she is a TOUGH GRADER!!
very tough grader. She wants her assignments done exactly how she wants them done. not a very clear grader. not very clear on what she wants. attendance points give extra point to your grade, definitely helps. offers a couple extra credit opportunities. definitely do the extra credit. lectures from powerpoints. required textbook and course packet
This class was insanely tedious. Felt like it was made so, because everyone knows it's kind of a joke requirement by the college. All the theory was redundant if you've been in the workforce for two years or more, instruction was mundane. Also, mediocre at communicating her expectations for assignments. If you don't have to take this class, don't.
This class is important if one wants to be successful working in groups. It is essential and eye opening information. The class is more demanding than I expected so be prepared to read and complete all the chapter quizzes. Be prepared to write papers and a presentation and justify every observation or conclusion using the 6 journalist questions.
The whole class was a group project. She assigns a bunch of little assignments with a final paper and presentation at the end. She's a very hard grader.
This class is a headache. The entire semester is a group project and I highly suggest you finish it as soon as you can. She thinks she's got the perfect system for group communication but the whole class was pretty pointless. She wants you to buy the $44 text book that she wrote but half the class never bought it. Pay attention and take notes.
Very nice and friendly but towards the end of the semester there are like four assignments due at once and it is very tedious work. She is a very hard grader when it comes to your individual presentation at the end of the semester so be prepared.
Horrible grader, on papers she will tear it apart, wrote red marks all over the group paper, and then doesn't let you do corrections, so what is the point of writing all of that? She is the most unhelpful teacher I have had. NOT willing to help students by any means, anytime you ask for help she makes you feel like she doesnt care if you pass.
I had heard scary things about Professor Hanson, but I ended up LOVING her. Yes, the class is difficult. Yes, she gives harsh grades on written work (like group projects) - but most grades are from multiple choice exams!! I ended up getting a high A because I put in the effort, read the book, and asked her many questions. She wants to help you!
She is a great teacher!! She interacts well with her students and answers any question you have. She gives plenty of examples so you can't be confused!
ABSOLUTELY AWFUL!!!!! I pay attention and take notes every class. I get good grades on all of the scantron exams. Every assignment has very vague instructions and then she tells you that you didn't follow instructions.... What?! Never again.
The worst class ever, I paid attention in class and completed every assignment with 80s and up plus extra credit. She takes forever to post grades, her grading method is trash, and doesn't give clear instructions with assignments. I got a D in the class, never taking her again even she is the last teacher on earth!!!!!
Professor Hanson is too demanding. The class is easy but she made it seems hard. She is such a bad grader. We worked so hard on all the assignments and thought we did everything the way she wanted but she will still give you a lower grade.
Very nice. Surprised to see negative reviews on here.
I have taken two courses with her and she is a wonderful professor. Very knowledgeable, humorous, and willing to help if you don't understand. She is really particular about her syllabus and will refer you back to it every time you ask a question and the answer can be found in it. Lastly, follow every bit of instructions for assignments!
Prof Hanson means well. She wants to see people learn at the best of their ability. She is a very difficult grader she doesn't take grading lightly. She's very passionate about the Comm. Dept but she can give off the vibe of being demanding of what she wants.
The class is not difficulty. On the other hand, Professor Hanson is the most difficulty person to work with. I see reviews on here saying she "wants you to learn from mistakes," I'd disagree. She grades work like a nazi. Aka unjustified and harsh. When you ask her what you did wrong, she does not provide direct answers. trash professor. 0/10.
Course material is difficult but if you show up and pay attention you will pass. You have to read the book. The assignments are not hard but all of her instructions are terrible so ask questions. Classes are discussion heavy. She's a good professor if you are a good student. Don't take if you're looking for an easy a.
Honestly she's not the worst professor I have ever had but I truly do wish she did more than just pop quizzes and tests. It was just unnecessary stress but I really do think that she's not as bad as everyone is making her seem to be on here. She's tough, knows her stuff, but also expects you to stay on top of material which is expected ...
Dr. Hanson is not a very good teacher. The concepts are extremely confusing and she does not do a very good job of explaining them in understandable terms. The tests and pop quizzes are incredibly difficult. She does not take attendance, but you will fail if you do not go to class.
This is my 3rd semester in a row with Dr Hanson and she is a GREAT teacher -- I think 90% of the people who said negative things about her on here were the people who slacked off, skipped class or assignments or slept during class and didn't care about their grades. If you do the work and pay attention, you'll get an A or B in the class easy.
The real difficulty of her class is the grading system. There is only 3 tests that make up most of your grade, a final worth 30%, and pop quizzes. This class honestly was not difficult to get a B in, but getting an A is only for the very dedicated. If you are fine with a B and do not want any HW, then it actually isn't that bad.
I thoroughly enjoyed the class. You have to read and pay attention in class to understand the concepts. Don't understand? Ask. There are pop quizzes, but if you read and use your resources, you will be fine.
Sandy is a terrible teacher. The concepts in this class are not difficult and I understood what she was teaching in class but her test and quiz questions made the class so much more difficult than it needed to be. I would read the chapters before and after class but my grade never improved. She gives random pop quizzes so make sure you go to class
The class was okay, but I would never take another class with Dr. Hanson again. The concepts and grading were easy enough to understand with some studying, but don't rely on her to be able to explain them. She also seemed quite petty in class and was not nice.
She seems to know what she is talking but if you don't read the book you will not pass the class. It is an easy class if you read the book before hand. She does not offer extra credit and is a little rude when you ask for ways to improve your grade, she'll just tell you to look at the "how to pass" power point that she has in the canvas.
I have had teachers who truly care about their jobs and students and want the best for their class, Ms. Hanson is about as far from that as you can get. She refuses to do anything above the minimum for any reason (I was in a car accident and wasn't allowed to make up a quiz we had that day) and will only deliver lectures read off of power points.
I took Hanson and I walked out of the class feeling like I was challenged by her course work. If you put forth the hard work to know the material discussed in lecture and your book, you will do good in her class. Her tests require that you know the material 100%. Also a very harsh grader; she can be very meticulous and unnerving in her grading.
Professor Hanson is by far the worst professor Ive ever had. Directions for assignments are extremely vague. She is extremely arrogant. Dont bother asking questions. You MUST come to class, you MUST do the extra credit. Professor Hanson is someone who doesnt care about the success of her students.
Doesnt take attendance but will give you a pop quiz. You are only graded by pop quizzes and test so I suggest you go everyday just in case! Need to study or you will not do well.
Professor Hanson truly loves her field and she loves her students. She is always willing to lend an ear or meet to discuss information that you might not understand. If you read the text before class, then you will be fine when the pop quizzes occur. Use the resources she provides you, SI especially. Shes the best professor Ive had at UNCC by far
She is a nice lady and probably a great lecturer for other COM classes. However, for COM theory, there was not much she did to help. The exams were ridiculous. I believe the first 3 exams the class average was Ds. You do not get a chance to really look back at your old exams, better off reading and reading and reading. Good Luck!
Professor Hanson definitely knows what shes talking about. Beware though, if you dont show up, you wont pass. The only grades are tests, 6 pop quizzes, and the final. But, if youre contemplating whether you need the book or not, youd probably be fine without it. I studied my notes really hard and passed with a B!
This class has changed my life one lecture at a time. Professor Hanson has been great in giving real life examples of the different theories and open to all questions if the material wasn't understood. Read ahead, ask questions, interact with the website that comes with the book, and you should have no problems being successful in her class.
This is the fundamental course for comm majors, so it should be taken seriously. Dr. Hanson is very well versed in communications and she provides excellent examples. Her lectures aren't boring and you will actually learn a lot about life. But you need to show up, the material isn't easy to learn on your own.
Professor Hanson is a nice lady but her directions for assignments are very vague so get ready to be frustrated. If you can I suggest maximizing her office hours so you can ask directly what she wants for each assignment. She does a lot of pop quizzes, Id say at least once or twice a week so read your chapters. I like her lectures though!
She is a great professor. She knows what shes talking about and explains it in a very understandable way. Don't miss the in class quizzes though. You can do very well on the large projects and still get a poor grade because of the in class quizzes.
Easily the worst professor I've had so far at UNCC. She talks in circles and then rips you a new one on assignments saying you didn't do exactly the right thing that she wanted. She even told me my opinion about my personality, which was an assignment, was wrong. Don't take her it's not worth it, LBST gen study classes shouldn't be that annoying.
I loved her so much. She is fully competent and has a complete understanding of the material she teaches. Just make sure to come to class always b/c she does have pop quizzes and make sure you use/ study the study guides and you should be fine..
I thought this would be an easy A class but I was proven wrong. I didnt do well on her essays cause I wouldnt do critical thinking shes a super tough grader and she wouldnt stick to her agenda at times, shell randomly have quizzes for the chapters. I advise you to not take this class. Unless you want a challenge.
All the papers and assignments given did not have clear guidelines. There was no rubric and she would give you harsh grades without real feedback, saying things like "this isn't what I wanted," but never making clear what she wanted. Horribly boring and don' take this class if you don't like comm, because she makes everything about comm.
This teacher is by far the worst teacher I've ever had in my entire life. She seemingly takes points off for no reason and lectures in circles. Her classes are focused on a PP but she olny gets through 3-4 slides a day because she won't shut up. She gave me an 8% on a paper because she doesn't like me, and now have to go through the dean for credit
She didn't allow me to make up the missing quizzes and I gave the assignments in February. She didn't grade my work until April and she graded 0 for all my makeup assignments. I told her chain about this and she emailed me back suddenly(usually it takes 4-5 days to have a response). She satirized me in the email and gave me a late work deduction.
I have a car accident. She didn't allow me to make up the missing quizzes. She didn't grade my February assignments until April and she graded 0 for all my makeup assignments. I told her chain about this and she emailed me back suddenly(usually it takes 4-5 days to have a response) satirized me in the email and gave me a late work deduction.
Sandy is the worst professor I have had at UNCC. Her lectures come straight from powerpoints and it feels like she will never shut up. If you miss class you might miss a pop quiz which is a big chunk of your grade. When it comes to excused absences she is not accommodating at all. I was in the hospital and she wouldn't let me make up a pop quiz.
Sandy gets a bad rep, and yes I got a C+ in this class, but to be quite honest her lectures are interesting and the class was not as hard as people will tell you it is. I got a C+ without ever really reading the textbooks or doing any work outside of class or studying. A lot is just common sense and memorization. Her exams are moderately hard.
This is the tougest class I've taken at any college. Prof Hanson is a great teacher, but the amount of information required to be taught in this class is INSANE. My advice is to come to every class with the lecture powerpoint slides printed off and take good notes. STUDY. You can not afford to procrastinate studying in this class, you will drown.
I loved having her as a professor. She gives you so many resources to do well, and she and her TA are available to help you in any way possible. Her teaching is clear and easy to understand. Her class is very difficult with heavy material, but if you stay with her and do what she says, you'll pass with flying colors.
Incredibly hard teacher. Only quizzes & test so do good on them or you fail. You HAVE to go to class. She wont give extensions without proper proof.. at all. Shes a nice person but a hard teacher.
Professor Hanson does not properly explain the material. She will talk for twenty minutes about one subject that does not have anything to do with the class. Professor Hanson's class is NOT suitable for online learning, and will not help you understand the text. I'd say don't take her class, but other UNCC Comm professors are worse.
Easily the worst teacher at UNCC. & absolutely NOT suited for online teaching. Please... do not take this class unless you have to. Its super stressful & a waste of time & energy. If you want a teacher to actually teach you.. shes not it. She talks on and on about completely unrelated things & then you have to study everything on your own.
She is so particular on her exams and quizzes. Like you need to make quizlets, read the textbook, and memorize the power points by heart. The amount of studying for this class is ridiculous. The whole class is mad with her.
I've taken a lot of online classes recently due to the COVID-19 epidemic. However, none have caused me nearly as much stress and difficulty as Professor Hanson's class. I felt responsible to make this review after talking to my other classmates, and finding out how bad they were all struggling with her as well.
This is the most difficult class I have ever taken in my life. The lectures are long and boring and the tests covers so many chapters, that it is impossible to grasp all of the material. If you can avoid taking this professor, I highly recommend it. The only grades you get are exams and quizzes, which are impossible to get a good grade on.
Sandy is a long winded professor who can turn 7 slides into a 1 hour and a half lecture that doesn't really help you understand the material. Her metaphors and examples fall short and have left me more confused. Her exams and quizzes are worded in such a way that you will find yourself confused if you covered the material correctly or not.
I have taken Dr. Hanson twice now, and my opinions still stand the same. Although she does care about her students, it is only the bare minimum. She tries to help you but does not actually help. You could read the textbook and have a clear understanding of the chapter and walk out of lecture feeling like you read everything wrong.
I've taken a lot of classes and let me say something this has to be the absolute worse professor ever. The amount of studying I've done for this class and my grade does not show it. I get it she uses a question bank but some students get easier exams while some get harder. To save yourself time and energy DO NOT TAKE HER!
I had heard negative things before, but I didn't realize how difficult this class was until I took it. I studied my ass off for every test, read the chapters every class, and still finished with a C. Her lectures are interesting, but she has always been very condescending, and does NOT care about the wellbeing of her students. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
This "weed out" class is no joke. Prepare to study every weekend as if you are about to take a final. I have read the entire book and am still barely at a C. Hanson shows no mercy and could care less if you fail her class. DON'T ask for extra credit because she said she would actually deduct points from your overall grade... BEWARE!Worst class ever
Literally this class an teacher alone have defeated me beyond repair. I have never received anything lower than a B, until this teacher. I did everything in my power to prosper, yet it wasn't enough due to the difficulty of her tests and quizzes. Please avoid this teacher at all costs, you won't regret it!
This class has single-handedly made me want to drop out. I usually get really good grades but this class is honestly impossible to pass. One quiz covers multiple chapters that are so hard to understand, as well as she confuses you with the questions and answer choices. You have a quiz and a test every week and you will have no time for other work.
Avoid Sandy Hanson at all costs. Im not joking when I say she makes her students MISERABLE. Shes a horrible teacher I have no idea how she has a job to be honest. Shes completely inconsiderate, doesnt give a crap about her students. Not even a little bit. She basically talks to herself during class because nobody can stand to listen to her crap
Horrible. The only way to describe Sandy and her class is horrible. STAY AWAY!!!
Terrible professor who does not teach. She is easily the worst teacher Ive ever had in my life. Its sad that she s better than the other comm professor though. The T.A. Carter is amazing though. Her study hall is what gave those that could pass a chance. I dont think Ive ever had a more useless and pointless professor in my life.
Horrible, awful, terrible. I'm only trying to help you.. YOU DON'T WANT SANDY HANSON AS A TEACHER. Trust me.
I am only trying to help you by saying do NOT take this professor. She is ridiculously hard and this is an intro course. She makes each test more difficult and the test/quizzes are A-G instead of A-D. She told us if we ask for extra credit opportunities (because we are all failing), that she will take off points. She doesn't care about her students
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH PROFESSOR HANSON. 100% the worst professor I've ever had. Your grade is solely tests and quizzes and you have no extra assignments to bring up your grade. Her lectures and readings make absolutely no sense and the tests are insanely hard, she doesn't use A-D she does A-G as multiple-choice options. Impossible to succeed
You attend every class, read every chapter, write notes on every presentation, revise 4 days in preparation for an exam and you will still barely make it to a C-. I swear I understand the material but the questions are ridiculous, the time limit is nerve- racking and the instructor pushes you to your core without any benefit in the end. Stay Away
Is Professor Hanson an "easy" Professor No, however is she a bad one absolutely not! Her class is tough however with good studying , class attendance, and an interest in Communication you can pass! Although the class was difficult I grew as a student and had to be diligent in my studies to succeed. I also will say she is so kind and a fun professor
This was a hard class, especially online, but she did great. There is a lot of information on Communication Theories and a lot of memorization, but if you study her PowerPoints and take the help quizzes you'll do fine. 7 quizzes and 5 exams, including final. She drops the lowest quiz and makes it extra credit at the end of the semester. Great prof.
This was a challenging course. It is NOT IMPOSSIBLE to succeed in this class. If I had study more often I would have gotten an A easily. She gets a bad rep because there are a lot of quizzes and tests, but better than only having 3 exams. If you don't attend the lectures, you won't pass. Just study a little every day and you'll get an A.
Echoing others here - DO NOT TAKE PROFESSOR HANSON'S CLASS!!!! She is hands down the worst professor I've ever had. Not sure how she still has a job. She acts like it's her first year teaching. Extremely disorganized (forgetting to open up quizzes, etc.) and treats students like criminals. Requires webcam for smallest quizzes.
Professor Hanson's class is manageable if you do the work and apply yourself, but it's not fun. There are around 10 quizzes (nice!) but all require lockdown browser AND monitor. The questions will trip you up/try to trick you, and you have to get 27/30 every time to hang on to a 90 in the class. You don't have to go to class but should. Good luck.
This is not an easy course. It isn't meant to be. She explains everything well and her PowerPoints are extensive. It's supposed to prepare you for your future communications classes, and I can say that life is much easier after taking her class. I use information from it all the time. The class isn't handed to you, so you'll have to earn your grade
I have never dreaded a class so much in my life. The quizzes and tests are ridiculously hard for an intro class. The questions she puts on the quizzes and tests make you double or even triple guess yourself. If you read the textbook and then listen to her lecture, youll be left confused. Theres a reason she has a million bad reviews. AVOID!!!
Hanson is not great but neither is this course. As a comm major you have to take this class, she runs through the info and is really not open for questions, sure she might rephrase what she said and that can sometimes be helpful she won't go past that. I don't recommend this class online because of the lockdown browser and camera.
I took this class and was scared due to all of the horrible reviews people have left for Professor Hanson. I disagree with all of them, she is a wonderful professor and has great lectures that she brings everyday examples into to help explain further. You have to read and show up for the class if you want to do well and class is fun! Do the work!
Hanson is brutal just like the class. I would avoid the professor as much as possible. I personally did not like her teaching styles and would never take her again.
While yes, this may be a tough class, Professor Hanson did a phenomenal job helping us understand the concepts of this course more thoroughly. As someone who finished this class with an A, I would say definitely read the textbook before attending class! It will set you up for success. Take advantage of your resources and ask questions. Good luck!
Essentially taught myself the material from the textbook, lectures do not help as she just reads off the powerpoint which you can access before class. Tests are multiple choice so that helps some. Wouldve gotten a higher grade but gave up and stopped doing assignments after changing my major.
Extensive power points, she uses it as a book. Quiz content does not come directly from the material taught or MyLab learning. It's almost like if she mentions an idea that means you have understood all of the facts about it yourself. Very unforgiving with any technical issues and grading. One issue with an assignment dropped me from A to D. AVOID!
Very rude and sarcastic for zero reason. If you want students to learn and feel good about themselves, stop taking out your bs on us. Very wishy-washy and makes the TA handle everything.
Avoid if she continues online class, as she completely disregards the complaints of many students that feel she is invasive into our privacy with her test rules. Takes credit off if you dont show the entire room ,will completely discredit the grade for any background noise, and takes points for slouching. Doesnt teach just reads powerpoints. Sad.
Sandy Hanson is honestly one of the worst professors I have ever had. Her lectures are incredibly boring and she is very rude. Her entire class is based off of the text book so you must read it. Her quizzes are very hard for absolutely no reason. She does not care about her students.
Let aside the professor, her exams are terrible. The questions are not straight forward neither are the multiple choices. I dont get why she does that making everything ten times harder on us. Although she seems like a nice person, I dont recommend you take this class with her.
Rude and does not answer questions. Quizzes are ridiculously hard, especially in intro to comm theory. She reads directly from the book and is horrible at elaborating.
I would not recommend her to anyone. Her tests are terrible and she genuinely does not care if you fail. You learn more about her life than actual learning about the topic. Her tests are on lockdown just fyi. I will NEVER take a class from her again.
I'll put it this way: I studied for each weekly test using the textbook and rewatching the weeks lectures at least twice, on average nine hours of studying for a test. Still get a 40-50 on each one. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Everybody I know either failed or dropped her class and took it with someone else and passed fine. Worst professor I've ever had.
I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt serval times but she is quite honestly a joke of a professor. It is definitely time for her to leave/lower her ability to be with students. The class is personally not the issue for me but her lack of ability to be wrong and this odd obsession she has with always being right can rub anyone wrong.
While she isn't really a good professor, I don't think she is as bad as others say. Yes, the class is very difficult. The lectures are tough to get through and the quizzes are rough. But if you do study you will do well, however, you have to put in the work. The practice quizzes on the textbook website are incredibly helpful.
worst professor ever.
Actually the worst professor I've ever had, sets you up to fail. The content is actually kind of easy but she makes the class miserable. Would never recommend anybody unless you actually wanna fail
Please dont do it to yourself class is only made up of difficult quizzes and test that require lock down browser with WebCam. Professor practically sets you up for failure
Professor Hanson is an extremely sweet woman who cares about her students and gets a bad rep because the class is hard and theres a quiz every week. Because I didnt study as often as I should im either ending this semester with a C or a D :/, study a little bit every day tho and attend lectures and making an A will be easy!
This class is really difficult and if you do not study hard, attend the lectures, and read the entire book, you will not do well. But if you do all of those things, you can definitely get a B or A. There are weekly quizzes, but that's much better for this material, rather than having 3 big tests with multiple theories. Just put in the effort.
Everything is the exact same, read a few chapters get a long lecture, and then take quizzes that make up the entirety of the grade. The quizzes are really challenging and if you don't read the textbook and study A LOT you will struggle. I barely scraped by this class despite putting in an incredible amount of time and effort.
Prof Hanson is great and makes COMM 2100 comprehendible. Her quizzes are hard but if you attend class and study your class notes, you will definitely pass. She comes across hard at first but once you start participating in class, you'll really enjoy it.
I will never take her as a teacher again
If you aren't willing to prioritize this class and have it take up most of your time, you probably won't do well in it. She covers a lot of subject matter in very little time and it is very hard to retain it all.
The professor is okay. The quizzes are just unnecessarily hard. Comm studies is my minor this is my last class to graduate this spring. I don’t think I’m going to graduate because of my grade in this class right now. The class is hard for a 2000 level class. It really sucks that we only get graded on these quizzes.
Ridiculously redundant and boring lectures. Better off rewatching lectures on your own time at 1.5x speed so it sounds normal. Entire grade is dependent upon short quizzes with obscure questions, so if you confuse two terms or can't remember some metaphor she brought up in class because you were too busy trying to not pass out, kiss the A goodbye.
Honestly, the class is not that bad. I was failing every quiz in the beginning but I changed my studying habits. I started rewatching lectures, reading the textbook, and using the self-help quizzes on the textbook website. Now I'm currently making A's and B's on every quiz. In this class, you really have to teach yourself to actually get it.
She relates everything to real-life examples, and she is very easy to talk to. She is very transparent and provides ample tutoring if you have any questions! You get extra credit for participation. Attendance is optional, but it does help your grade in the end! Her TA's are also beneficial and great communicators! Great class! 10/10.
Dr. Hanson is very cold, unhelpful. All said and done, I'm disappointed with my experience and am very perplexed on how she continues to get by teaching this topic. Almost daily someone in our GroupME complains about this class and how she teaches. For the entire semester we have "learned" everything through powerpoint slides.
The course is hard but Dr. Hanson does a great job of explaining the information with real world scenarios. The more you participate in class the easier the information comes. Be ready to study and take notes. It's a great class if you focus on the material and get the help you may need.
Get ready to cry, have no sleep, and did I mention cry.Nothing could possibly prepare for this class, not even army boot camp. One advice I would give is to START OFF STRONG, do not slack off and think you'll be able to pick urself back up later in the semester cuz you wont. ONLY QUIZZES EVERY WEEK AND NO OTHER ASSIGNMENTS. STUDY FOR HOURS EACH WEE
I loved my course with professor Hanson. If you do your reading and take notes you will do fine. Max 15 pages of reading before each class and I did not find it difficult to keep up. I think a lot of students were upset that lectures didn't cover every detail from the chapter, but I don't think people did the reading before class and it showed.
She is a great professor! Very informative and wants you to truly understand the material. To pass this class, you need to really study the theories, memorize them and use quizlet! Thats how I passed, if you can keep getting 100% on the quizlet practice test then you will pass the quizzes. There are lots of quizlets!
Ridiculously hard class. Grades only based on quizzes, like you can make Bs and Cs on the quizzes and still be failing. She enjoys that her class is hard. Gives random extra credit and if you ask for extra credit she says she can take it away.
The class is hard and you REALLY have to read and pay attention in lectures. Professor Hanson can be blunt but explains things in lectures decently well. Your grade is based solely off of the 13 quizzes that are given based on the theories and nothing else which is why I think the course can get so hard too.
Don't get me wrong, she's a great person as a whole... but the course itself is just too much. You are only graded by the quizzes each week, so you HAVE to be prepared to read a lot of chapter material. Attendance was not mandatory on zoom but some questions on the quizzes reflect topics only discussed in class so... all I can say is good luck.
If you can avoid taking this class with her please do. Some of the material in this class is quite hard to grasp and she doesn't make it any easier. There are 12 quizzes and 2 tests, which doesn't seem like a lot but they're pretty hard. If you do take this class with her be sure to use the self-help quizzes that are on the textbook website.
do not take this class. it will stress you out for no reason. the only grades are weekly quizzes on 2-3 complicated chapters each, midterm, and final, and everything is on lockdown with camera. avoid at all costs
Professor Hanson was probably one of the worst professors I've ever had. All she has are quizzes and tests and doesn't give any other assignments to help her students learn and pass the class. She is not understanding or helpful at all. She has no room for leniency and seems to show little respect for her students.
Sandy does not represent the greatness that is UNCC. She does not teach the class, merely reads off the slides, her grading makes no logical sense and is very misinformed when it comes to dialogue. I had never failed a class until I ran into Sandy and was given poor marks, despite getting an A on the final(which was multiple choice so no tampering)
Seems very nice but can be passive-aggressive. I ended up skipping most classes because they felt useless to me. attendance was extra credit and the textbook was free- which I really appreciate. Don't take this course online- public speaking in an online class can be very awkward (you film yourself in front of your friends).
I hated this class because you are being graded ONLY on tests. No assignments, no other work to practice the material on. Literally, you join Zoom, listen to her ramble, take a lockdown browser quiz every week, and that's it. The quizzes are purely just luck. The number of times I studied so hard and still failed is ridiculous.DON'T TAKE HER CLASS!
Professor Hanson is a very sweet professor who I think I would have liked if she was not my teacher. There is quizzes and test only which sounds appealing but, the quizzes are extremely hard and almost impossible to get an A on them. I would very strongly recommend not taking her class if you can avoid it. Again - she is a sweet lady, but not teach
The lectures can be helpful as she gives many examples to help you understand but the test take LOTS of studying for a decent grade. They can be very hard and confusing and the quizzes are the only assignments, the class is just very heavy on information and its not like you can use notes on test since its through a lockdown browser.
Easiest C+ of my life. If you're good at test taking this class is not hard, i did not go to class or read the text book and had a B for most of the semester. The 15 question quizzes felt pretty straightforward and if you do a quick quizlet search on the chapter before the quiz you would probably be fine. all dependent on being a good test taker
VERY harsh grader. Will answer any questions you have, but it can be difficult to understand certain guidelines needed. Will not accept late work under ANY Circumstances.
Find another professor for public speaking, not lenient on assignments and gives no sympathy
