we stay after class just about every class. He keeps talking even if you have another class to go to. So Disrespectful. He is not very good as far as teaching either.
if your not a history major don't take this class. i hate history. This guy just made me hate it even more.
He's really clear and tells you what needs to be done. It's not impossible to get an A, but he does grade the writing pretty hard. He's extremely helpful and if you go into his office he will explain everything for you and break everything down. He's a good teacher, but not an easy A at all.
This teacher is a waste of time and life. i learned nothing. He grades like he is a English teacher, and his jokes are corny. Don't take this teacher.
Hes a really nice guy and knows alot of info. BUT SO HARD.About 6 books to read. You have to memorize like 75 words and only 10 will be on the test. You must know dates, pple,y its important in us history and all that. Then essay questions on every test.Gave like 2 e.c. but it was alot of work. Not an EZ A and positive my gpa will go down b/c of him
Overall great prof! Tough on students writing but it's only because he actually cares. Not an easy class for those who don't care to learn. He covers a lot in each class and his lectures are interesting =) I learned A Lot!
He is very clear and smart. you get to learn a lot through his class. He puts many efforts for every student and makes sure that everyone understands him.
The professor is squared away. I took his class during the fall session of 2011. The lectures are good. Take notes. Read the text and just be ready to participate. Great teacher.
Chi is awesome. Lectures can get a little tedious, but take good notes--they'll help for the 2 papers, midterm, and final. Only used the textbook to help study and write my papers. Easy midterm and final, just memorizing really. He is really helpful during office hours. Truly cares about his students succeeding. I definitely recommend Pro. Chi
I hated attending class and though i would fail the course but i passed like a G! 2 Journals Midterm and Final...Idk how i passed because I thought I was in an English class more than a history class after he marked my paper up with so much gramtical errors but i scored with a B!! Heyyy!
Extremely insightful!!!! Lectures are super engaging the reading is perfectly aligned to provoke interesting aspects of reading+ lectures combined!!! Very Valuable and Very Appreciated!!! Chi is def. passionate about analyzing and inspecting students views and opinions!!! So glad i took this class!!!
Fun class! Lots of notes! Cares so much for the students and he is very approachable. Get ready to write though. There are journals due every week and he only lets you miss 5. There are 2 essays and the midterm and final. It's not an EZ A sometimes you feel you are in an English course. if you do not analyze the sources expect a C or less.
He is a great teacher and cares about the subject and his students. Lectures are clear and interesting, I learned a lot in class. You do have to work hard to get an A, do write a detailed journal. Chi gives a ton of options for extra credit as well. I enjoyed his class very much!
One of the easiest A's of my life. If you show up, listen and do all of the work, you will ace his class. He made me love history. He's funny and he's easy on the eyes.
He is very passionate about history. His lectures are amazing and when he speaks you can hear the passion in his voice about the subject. He is inspiring. He is a hard grader but hey its college its supposed to be hard. Be detailed in all your work and analyze do not summerize! His midterm was a breeze just memorize every detail trust me!
One of the best teachers at SMC. If you are open minded about history you really get a ton from this guy. he got his degree from Berkeley i believe. Very little assignments but they are tough! just go in office hours hes extremely inviting and helpful! whenever the class wasn't engaging enough he always gave a motivational speech which was awesome!
Very passionate about History! I had a great time in his class and learned a lot! Definitely recommend him, he's also very helpful and a really nice guy! Take him! :)
This professor assigns way too m uch reading. He is inconsiderate of student's time and does not take into account that his class is mostly being taken only for the GE requirement. He takes himself and his class too seriously. His attitude is great but he screams during lectures and spits out too many dates. DO not take this class for a GE
Great professor! He really makes history interesting & is very passionate about teaching. There is a lot of work for this class, but you get great feedback and know how to improve to get an A.Dont take if you're lazy. Only 2 tests in class- a midterm & a final(easy if you use the study guide).I am for sure taking his History 12 class next semester.
Young, passionate, one of the best teachers at SMC. Hes very in depth, you gain a ton of perspective and easy to reach in office hours. Cares a lot about the students. He recited an entire lecture for me in office hours. If ur an average student this class is prob mildly difficult. But the guy is on point, totally recommended!
Very clear instruction. He has you pick a topic and then write a 10-13 page paper on that topic. I chose a person. A lot of research, but if you give yourself time, an A is very possible. The class was only about 10 people. He is an interesting teacher.
Great professor. Very clear in lectures. Very clear in what he wants in assignments and essays. He is a very cool guy. Easy to talk to. His class requires a bit of effort and the A is easy to achieve. I would definitely take another class of his.
He was one of the best teachers I have ever had. He actually made history fun and exciting to learn about, and lectures in a way that helps you remember the information easily. His class, however, is not an easy A. Prepare for lots of hard work. He offers extra credit, so take advantage.
Chi is real cool. Lectures a little too much but he is very clear and is a solid teacher. Learned a lot in his class. Mostly just notes, A couple (probably around 6) out of class papers that determine the grade. And mid-term and final obviously
Chi is a great professor. I have never really been that interested in history, in fact, I failed U.S history my junior year of high school! But I come home from this class and talk about everything I've learned. He makes it all relative and interesting. He is a tough grader but always offers his help. Midterm, Final, 3 papers, lots of EC.
Chi was the real deal. He lectures in class but is a pro at it. Very engaging and interesting and has power points with great pictures and info. He is also extremely helpful during his office hours. I don't know why more people don't go to them but they are a big part of why I got an A. He's awesome and I would totally recommend him.
PROF CHI IS THE BOMB! He's so animatic when he lectures which makes the subject seem super fun &easy to understand. He's very concise, clear & intelligent. You have an option of doing 1 or 2 essays for one of the assignments (Hint: DO THE FIRST ESSAY, IT'S EASIER!). It's not easy to get an A in History but challenge yourself & TAKE THIS CLASS! :)
Go to class and study hard. Not an easy class at all, put if you put a lot of effort you can get a good grade
Chi's extremely responsive to students, very understanding, and lectures like a storyteller. This was the first time I truly enjoyed listening to history lectures rather than sleeping through them. Trust me, I HATE history, but Professor Chi made me LOVE this class. Don't need book if you take very detailed notes, and use google to fill in blanks
One of the best teachers I've had at SMC. Passionate, inspirational, helpful, and knowledgeable. Challenging and you gotta work for it, but very rewarding.
Chi's class is very engaging. It is difficult as he requires you to think critically rather than parrot a bunch of random information and dates. My writing has gotten better for sure with his feedback. You should not not take a class just because it is difficult. Take something that will make you challenge what you have been told!
Professor Chi is absolutely amazing. His lectures made me love history. He gives plenty of opportunities for extra credit and gives 3 freebie absences (but don't miss anymore than that or your grade will go down). I only read from the book once and relied solely on his lectures which are very thorough. He is one of the BEST professors at SMC.
If you are a history take him you will love his lectures, even if you aren't you learn so much he really opens your eyes to the world around you. I will admit it wasn't easy but im glad I took his class. 3 essays, quizzes every week, midterm and finally are essay format.
Professor Chi is a great guy overall! He's just a tough grader, if you're a good writer, take him. He assigns a few papers now and then but I emphasize on how tough he grades! I know he does it to make us better students though, because he's not a mean guy at all! Lectures are very interesting and super funny!
Professor Chi was by far the best professor I have ever had. I am a mathematical Engineering type person and Professor Chi made me love and appreciate all that is history. His lectures are captivating, immensely informative, and thematically sweeping. He is an amazing person and will help you through an admittedly tough workload. take this class!!!
I'd highly recommend to take this class to all future historians. Professor Chi is very intelligent and down to earth, with great sense of humor, humane and understanding. Very knowledgeable and helpful. Was very interesting class, the one that you'd remember.
Professor Chi was one of the best Professor's I have ever had. I am a History major, and loved every moment of his class. He makes lectures fun. Chi also gives as much credit as he possibly can on quizzes, tests, and papers. If you are open to retaining a lot of information at once, this is the class for you.
txt: rent, supplements the lects. lectures? dense info, vry interesting, some depressing stuff but it's Ameri hist so... prof: your grammar is rly important for papers, clear lecturer, if you need help go to him/office hours, chill, i don't care what your major is YOU SHOULD TAKE THIS CLASS (hist of Ameri is so interconnected it'll be useful)
Professor Chi is awesome and engaging. He is a tough grader and does assign a lot of reading but if you keep up from the start you should be fine. He always answers questions and is willing to help. Made history so interesting, would definitely take another class with him!
He is an AMAZING teacher! His class is super fun and interesting , for homework he assigns reading but he posts it all online so don't buy the book. The total assignments for his class were 4 papers. He has 2 tests which are the Midterm and Final, 2 quizzes. He is a TOUGH grader but is willing to help. He offers some extra credit but it's not easy.
A lot of material.
His lectures are dense but very interesting. He gives 3 papers, 2 quizzes, a midterm, and a final. I thought the class was pretty easy. Do the reading the week it's assigned, and if you need help/find yourself falling behind, go talk to him during office hours. He's very approachable, and wants to help!
Really hard but interesting lectures. too much material and makes you memorize exact dates of things and there is a lot to remember. 2 quizzes (helps for midterm), 1 midterm (in-class essay, HAVE TO REMEMBER DATES), 2 primary source analysis (unnecessary), 1 essay (long and unnecessary), 1 final (in-class essay, HAVE TO REMEMBER DATES)
I hate history but this class was my favorite! His lectures were very interesting. There is no multiple choice test, it's all writing and there is a lot of reading that gives you extra information that is useful for your essays. He is tough grader but he gives you good feedback! I recommend this class!
Do not take this professor. He gives grades based on his opinion and he is extremely picky. Lectures are all over the place. He tries to be funny and it just annoys everyone. Gives way too many IDs to study for for the tests its unrealistic. He has no real grading criteria he just will slap C on something without any explanation. learned nothing.
Chi is a cool dude. Lectures are informative and the book isn't required, he mostly gives handouts for HW. Theres also in-class group discussions. Tests are multiple choice and short essay, which are easy if you come to the lectures and do the HW. He's hilarious and quite vulgar but he definitely makes history a fun and interesting subject
Professor Chi is a great professor. I might have failed his class, but I understand why he grades the way he does. I honestly didn't try and that's why I failed. If you just want an easy pass then don't take this class. If you want to actually want to learn something then I would take this class.
Chi is THE MAN! His lectures cut to the core. You can tell how much effort he puts into everything he does. His Asian American History course is jam-packed with information. He makes students think deeper than they've ever thought before and will push your limits. The subject matter is engrossing and sheds light on an unfamiliar part of US history
Chi is really chill and is passionate in what he teaches. honestly, he is a great professor. study the terms and go to his office hours and you'll do great. he's hilarious lol
LOVE IT! Take his class I PROMISE you wont regret it. currently taking him now and he is just an excellent professor I wish I had more to say but nope. His lectures are emotional and you can tell he is very passionate and straight up about how history actually went down. be ready for some TRUTH
Chi is the best professor I have ever had. Taking his class made me like history, which may seem a little cliche. He's very animated in his lectures and to pass, you must take notes . His quiz is exactly like the 2 tests and the content is lectures and reading sources he gives you. The essays in the class are quite easy.
Amazing class. Great professor, very tough grader. Know grammar! I did all of the extra credit assignments bc they were interesting and gave knowledge. Requires hard work and a lot of studying. If you want knowledge, inspiration and confidence when talking History, this is your guy. Great teaching techniques as he uses all senses for his students
History can be boring, Sang is not. He makes history really fun and exciting. Loved taking his class and would take again if I was still at SMC. He's awesome. Just keep up with your assignments and ask questions if you need to.
Professor Chi is an amazing lecturer, who makes you work for your grade. This is not an easy class, but it is one very easy to be inspired by. His style of lecturing is so colorful and emblematic. I failed the first time I took him (missed final) but the second time around still felt refreshing. (PRINT OUT THE OUTLINES EVERY WEEK. TRUST ME.)
This was a pretty tough class but Dr. Chi is an amazing professor and his love and enthusiasm for American history is contagious. Keep up with the reading, take good notes, and go to his office hours for help!
Professor Chi is a really cool guy, and amazing professor. His class is really interesting, but can be very hard. I struggled a bit during the semester and he was very happy to sit down with me and go over my work. He cares about his students, is really funny, and knows A LOT. Lots of reading, and a lot of terms that need to be known for tests.
HE IS THE BEST! HE MAKES HISTORY SO INTERESTING AND FUN! there is a lot of reading but so worth it.
Professor Chi is a really good teacher and is passionate about history. He tries really hard to make history fun & "#relatable" which is cool for those who dont enjoy history (I do, so it seemed excessive but others loved it). Getting an A is difficult and will required work (shocker!) but totally do-able. Oh, and go to office hours & as Qs!!
Chi was probably one of the most inspirational professors I've ever had in my entire academic career. The material he taught were things that will forever stay with me, mostly because he made his students relate to the subject. It's not an Easy A and he doesn't mess around, but he does give you great feedback! Office hours is a must, he'll help you
Professor Chi is an inspiration. It was the hardest I've ever had to work, but worth it. I came away with a greater understanding of the world a& he touched on subjects/angles that would be overlooked with any other professor. He doesn't dry-lecture. LOTS of studying for the tests (don't wait til the end!) and rigorous papers. Mandatory attendance.
Professor Chi is the best history teacher ever. The way he looks at and explains history leaves it open to interpretation not like some, where what they say is the truth and nothing else. If you miss a lecture and no one is at his office he will go over the whole lecture with you! He is a great guy
The way he lectures has everybody paying attention and very interested in what is being thought. You are graded on 3 OnLine quizzes(15pts each) ID Terms Online Test(50pts) Workshop(10pts) 2 primary source analysis (70&75pts) Thesis statement assignment(50pts) Midterm&Final (100pts each). You need 346 points to pass his class. Just keep up w/the IDs
This was literally the hardest class I've ever taken. I've NEVER needed to study this hard in any class as much as this one. Sang is so passionate about this subject, and I do respect him for it. Make sure you never miss class, complete the study guides, study your a** off. This class keeps you on your toes and you CANNOT slack.
In all my years I've learned U.S history and found it as the most intresteing class I've had this year. This is all do to his passionate lectures.
Professor Chi, makes learning history very enjoyable. His lecture style is full of passion. He really keeps you engaged during his lectures. The work in this class is tough however. Be prepared to work hard. You are assigned two papers during the semester. Midterm and Final are in class essays. He is super inspirational! Good luck!
I just wanna say that if GPAs and money wasn't a concern, I would take all of Prof Chi's classes regardless of whether it's part of my major. But sadly we live in a system that forces us to prioritize the numbers over our actual individual development. Else, I guarantee his lectures would make anyone a more profound participant of society.
Chi was one of the funniest and realest teachers at SMC. His enthusiastic lectures never put you to sleep and actually speaks the truth. His credentials come from top schools and his work is honestly not hard at all. Pay attention to the lectures and dont be scared by his readings as they are not mandatory. I passed with a B not reading one.
One of the coolest professors you'll take at SMC. Makes his lectures really funny and interesting. He's a very fair professor and is willing to help you as long as you go and talk to him. The class requires you to read A LOT but don't be intimidated! You aren't graded for reading you just need to keep up with it. He makes history interesting & fun!
i liked this class at the beginning but then it got harder. He is passionate about this subject and curses in class a lot which is funny, but too much of it gets annoying. the id terms are hard to do as well as the paper analysis. i hated this class , really hard teacher. i do NOT recommend him at all. no multiple choice questions, just writing.
Dr. Chi is the man! Great professor, very knowledgeable and kind. Be warned though, if you are lazy you will not do well in this class, VERY tough grader and you need to be a very strong writer to get an A on the papers and the exams. Most of the class was barely pulling a C average. His bias does occasionally show but he is honest about it.
I have taken two of his classes. History 11 & 12. I am a history major and highly recommend his class. He is extremely passionate about history and makes it exciting and interesting. I passed both his classes with a B, TIPS: Don't miss class, taking good notes, try to do as many extra credits, and ask a lot of questions. Don't sleep on the id terms
History is so boring but not with Professor Chi. He makes it so interesting you actually care to listen. Ties it into modern times so it makes even more sense. Barely any homework. Very simple assignments. Clear midterm and final criteria. Gives you the blueprint of how to get an A so follow it. Does a lot of workshops and has one that is mandatory
Pretty chill professor. Very passionate about his lectures. Kind of a tough grader, always wants something very specific written on the papers. Grades nothing lower than a C.
Dr. Chi is an amazing teacher. One of my favorite classes! He mostly lectures but makes it interesting and engaging. I love taking notes so this was the class for me. Two main tests about what we had been lectured on. Additional readings are necessary.
I took professor Chi during Covid-19 and the BLM protests, perfect timing. I got to see his lectures inside of the classroom (He is the best public speaker I've had as a professor) and his willingness to transition to remote learning. He cares about your success, and you'd be a fool not to take him. He gave the most extra credit I've ever received.
INSPIRATIONAL. Yes his jokes are hit or miss but you can clearly see that this guy lives and breathes history. He also makes you work for it. Like real hard. In the exams you're expected to write a fully developed analytical essay (NOT open book), which requires you to know the material in and out. The only course at SMC that truly changed me.
WOW, look when im telling you that Prof. Chi is the real deal. I looked forward to his class because of the way he made history come to life! His enthusiastic lectures are what made the class interesting. His knowledge of history is impeccable. He made me almost change my major to history! Essays are well graded just include context!! Take him!!!!
I came into the class bc everything else was filled and I am the type to choose the easy A and not care abt the subject. this man is AMAZING, he makes you learn the history this isnt a class u can bs. great feedback and annotations on papers. 5 quizzes u can find on quizlet, 4 papers, opt final, 10 pts EC super understanding he is the BEST
TAKE HIM. This guy does not belong at a community college--his lectures are one of the BEST I've ever witnessed and I'm now studying at Stanford. His enthusiasm and passion for history shows through every class and, most of all, he makes history FUN. The only downside is that as a department chair, he's hard to get a hold of outside of class.
This is by far one of the greatest classes I have ever taken. I took his HIST12 class in Fall of 2019 and really enjoyed it. There is a lot of reading and you do need to put effort into your papers, but overall he just wants to see you succeed. He's easily accessible during office hours and will always find a way to help you understand if you need!
Everything was super easy except for the two primary source analysis assignments. He records every lecture so his class is very flexible. Two super easy essays for the entire semester. Highly recommended!
Great professor, and very inspirational. Best lectures ever. Not too difficult, interesting course material. He obviously has leftist political views which comes through in the teaching, but it is overall a great experience to be in his class. Very respected professor.
Dr. Chi's HIST 12 was my first history course on campus as a History major. I wasn't sure what to expect but my expectations were blown away regardless. Dr. Chi is an amazing lecturer, telling great stories that make you feel connected to the class material. Though Dr. Chi can be a tough grader, if you come to class and stay engage you surely pass
I had a blast in professor Chi's class. He's super passionate about the class and I remember everything because of how naturally he teaches the class. The ID's are challenging as are the essay outlines but he's easily accessible if you have questions or need help.
Lectures can get heavy but he is super sweet and engaging. Is also willing to help and compromise when you reach out. He truly wants students to succeed. Take this professor!! Uses Inquizitive and 3 essay outline assignments, but only one full paper that has to be written, no class quizzes.
One of the best professors at SMC. His in-person lectures were so engaging, I never felt bored of a single one. I learned a lot of things from this class that still stick with me. Assignments were not stressful and he is always open to communication. Please take him if you're looking for a good History professor!
Not even exaggerating: one of the best if not the best professor on campus. The best professor I have had for sure. His lectures are amazing and engaging you learn something new in each one. Most importantly he wants you to do well, he sets you up for success. Go to office hours if you have a questions. Genuinely can't recommend him enough.
I took Dr. Chi's class back in Fall of '23, and let me tell you, I still think about how awesome he was. He is truly an inspirational professor, who is passionate about teaching. His lectures are very engaging, and he is very understanding. I still think about his class, and that should tell you something. Best professor as SMC!
Prof Chi is the best professor I've at SMC! His lectures are super informative and interesting because of his way of teaching. The PowerPoints he uses are do not include information so it's very important to take your own notes while active listening. Class included inquizitives, source analysis, and one actual paper. Overall, HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
He's very rude in his emails, also his class was very hard.
Amazing lectures, engaging and connects past to present. LOTS of extra credit, only one comprehensive exam = primary source analysis. Don't need to study, just pay attention to lectures and take notes, easy A+ and you'll have learned fascinating things. Cares about his students, Online quizzes with numerous attempts for 100%, & essay papers
Chi is amazing, I would recommend taking HIST12 with him to anyone. His lectures are passionate, shocking, and very engaging. HWK was textbook readings w/ questions that can be done over and over again. Only "exam" in class was a primary source analysis, also pretty easy. Attend, be engaged, and you will enjoy his class & very likely get an A.
