Very hard to understand- he has a stutter and not the best english. Lectures are very disorganized and doesn't do any examples related to the types that appear on tests. His writing is very messy and almost impossible to read. Lectures are almost pointless to attend but the textbook doesn't cover all of the material. Would not recommend
He has a strong accent and really hard for students to understand what he is talking about. The handwritten is poor as well. The assignments requires you to put a lot of efforts on. The exams cover a lot of content. Would suggest to take ACSC437 with another professor.
DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSE!!!!!!!
His slides are professional and well organized, however it's very hard to follow his written lecture notes. As an individual, he's very passionate about Actuarial Science and genuinely wants you to succeed. He host frequent office hours and check his emails frequently, so reaching him outside of class won't be a problem.
He failed to communicate ideas to students. Tests did not assess concepts that are included on the actuarial exam that the class is meant to prepare you for. He's a very kind individual but his inability to communicate/teach concepts is apparent in his class.
He was a very nice guy and I know he's relatively new to teaching, but he wasn't the best. It was difficult to understand him at first due to his stutter, and though he tried to get ideas across it never really worked. I basically taught myself the course.
Sang seems like a genuine prof but unfortunately, i really dislike attending his lecture. He's new to UoC and he isn't fluent in english, so its hard to understand the concepts and I didn't do well for mid-term. Ever since, i started attending other lectures and i did well for the tests thereafter! He is a nice guy though.
Its only the first week of class and were already 3 lectures behind. He stutters and you cant understand anything he says. Absolutely terrible. He teaches the wrong stuff too.
Accent+Stutter I don't understand what's going on in this course Absolutely horrible experience. His stutter makes it so that you can't understand what's being said, and he posts nothing on d2l. Midterm practice is nonexistent and he doesn't even tell you what'll be on the test. Ridiculous! If you get this prof, do yourself a favour and switch out
So hard to understand his ideas and he does not teach the topics properly, if you are picking courses and he teaches one of them, do yourself a favor and do not take this class. I had the worst experience ever in this class and it only got worse with everything moving online as he would overload the d2l page with so much information. YT taught me.
THE worst prof I've ever had. It's super hard to understand him and not just because of the stutter/accent. He is a nice guy but it was impossible to follow what he was saying, his analogies never made sense, he jumped around a lot and d2l was super jumbled. Even his posted notes were impossible to follow. Do not take his class.
Absolute worst prof I've ever had hands down. His accent/stutter make it impossible to understand him, his lectures and d2l are unorganized and his emails are undecipherable - he must use google translate. Teach the material to yourself because his lectures are pointless and he makes way too many critical mistakes - he's always getting corrected.
Should not be a professor.
Dr. Kang is extremely difficult to understand, unhelpful in every sense of the word. I always felt like I did not know what I was supposed to learn from his lectures. I found myself learning from the assignments and completely lost when it came to exams. Emails are impossible to understand. Do not take a class taught by Dr. Kang.
Dr. Kang is a very kind and caring professor. I found that his extreme passion for statistics was a double-edged sword: for mathematics majors, the extra level of detail was greatly welcomed, but for liberal arts students such as myself, this extra detail made an already confusing topic even more mind-bending. Individual studying is essential.
He jumps around in lectures so much that you can't even follow along. He makes zero sense in lecture and he has an accent making it more difficult to understand. Do not recommend. If you take this class you'll have to teach yourself. The content isn't terribly hard, but he made it a lot more confusing.
He can be harder to understand, but he truly cares about his students. It was a hard course you definitely have to do the work, but he was very understanding and made it easy to ask him questions.
He has a good heart, but is not competent at teaching. He is extremely disorganized and unprofessional.
He is a caring prof that does make you work for your grade. His tests weren't hard for the most part but became harder towards the end of the course (especially the final) and definitely made a lot of effort in organizing d2l and providing learning materials quickly. John will improve overtime tbh. He is a nice guy.
Dr. Kang cares a lot about his students. This is a course that many students struggle with, but he set it up so that students had a better opportunity to do well, by allowing students to complete assignments with bonus questions, and answer participation Tophat questions for a bonus mark. The exams and assignments were all pretty doable.
Our class was slightly behind on the course material plan, but I wouldn't blame him since the students in the lecture wasted our time by asking questions he already answered, and complaining about little details. He was patient and accomodating with his students, and did not get angry at us. He took our feedback seriously and catered to our needs.
Kang has an accent, but it's still easy to understand him in his videos and emails. He is very sweet, caring, and organized. He responded to emails very quickly. He also offered extra time on quizzes since they were online and we needed time scan and upload our work.
He is a prof that means well. Although he is unorganized and does not get assessments marked in a timely manner, he has great notes and extremely helpful and accessible outside of class. Worst case for this prof is you don't understand him in lectures, you get help outside the class and look over his detailed and clear notes and you will be fine
He is amazing, he is the GOD of UC Stat.
This year I am taking his STAT 321 and ACSC 325, the way how he organized his lecture note and videoes has improved a lot compared with the last year when he tuaght STAT213. I feel like he might be lack of experience before but right now he has made great improvement. He is also a prof that always willing to help us,and try to boost our marks.
Dr. Kang is one of the few profs in Actuarial Science that really cares about his students and wants to see them succeed. This is the second class I've had with him and he's come a long way. His notes are organized and he is often available to answer questions. His tests can be quite difficult but he is an easy grader. One of my favourite profs!!!
pretty difficult to follow along in the lectures, quite all over the place which makes it super difficult to do well in the class as stats is already somewhat difficult.
Dr. Kang has an amazing work ethic. If you have any questions he is always open to answer them with a uplifting attitude.
Hes great professor. Truly goes above and beyond for the students. Has helped with many tough situations like helping get paid access for certain websites for free when I was having financial hardships. The marking is quite considerate too (bonus 3% tophats, lowest assignment, lowest quiz is dropped) and a lot more I dont have space to mention.
I honestly love prof Kang. He is such a sweet guy and always extremely accommodating! He truly tries to make his student's lives as easy as possible, and always extends deadlines as he knows that many of us have a heavy course load. If you ever have a question, he emails you back extremely fast, sometimes within minutes. Easy to get a high mark!
Prof Kang is literally the sweetest! He is beyond understanding and generous with his deadlines/grading. He has an accent, but imo it does not affect my understanding of the content. Would recommend him as a prof for sure!
Professor Sang is the nicest professor you will get in first year. The material is very straight forward and the textbook is useful if notes are unclear. He will go out of his way to explain topics and help you succeed. I highly recommend you taking him if you want to succeed. Although his accent may be hard to follow, his notes are very detailed!
He was always understanding especially during midterm season. He extended assignments for us and also provided flexible grading as well as bonus marks. An amazing prof and really helpful!
Dr. Kang has saved me so much stress! Going into the class I was really worried since statistics is a really difficult concept for many. But Dr. Kang is very understanding of students in the online environment. Don't know what he is like in person though
He is incredibly nice, understanding, helpful, and accommodating. He gives many resources that will help students understand and practice the material. He has given many extensions because he understands students are busy. He is so sweet!
Prof. Kang is one of the best profs I've had, reading past ratings I think he has improved a lot. His notes are organized and even though he has an accent I can still understand him and learn. He is genuinely very nice and accommodating to his students especially now with online class and has concern over his students + accessible outside of class
One of the kindest and most understanding professors I have encountered in university. The reviews on here do not do him any justice. He has been so accommodating this online semester and has happily extended work upon students requests. He provides multiple opportunities to succeed and is an overall great person. Thank you Dr. Kang :)
Prof. Kang is probably one of the most generous and sincere professor I have ever had. The rates on here made me feel anxious about statistic, but man is this prof so nice! He provides many programs to help better understand materials and hes quite caring. He is willing to give extensions knowing students are struggling during online learning.
In some aspects, hes a fine professor. Provides lots of resources, however his lectures are quite unclear. Biggest issue is that he does not respond to emails, sometimes for weeks on end. Which makes him a very frustrating/almost impossible professor to have for an online class.
I'll be honest, initially I absolutely hated the class. His accent was killing me, and his explanations were very unclear. However, eventually, I got used to it, and I started to relate to what he was explaining in the recorded lectures even through his accent. He's quite fair in his assessments, and good prof in every other way. The accent kills.
Hands down the nicest professor you will ever encounter. So accommodating and does way more than he needs to help students - but pls don't take advantage of his kindness! Well organized lectures, can easily listen on 2x speed. Tests are fair and based on the examples from lectures and assignments so you are never surprised. Very generous grading.
I highly recommend Dr. Kang as a prof for any stats course at U of C. He does have a strong accent, but is such a sweet and caring professor. He only wants you to succeed and is so accommodating. Stat 205 is a very enjoyable class, and Dr. Kang makes it that much more enjoyable. Overall just a great human and a wonderful prof. Highly recommend him!
Mr. Kang is an amazing professor! He really cares about his students and wants everyone to succeed. His accent is a bit difficult to understand at first but you get used to it quickly. He responds to emails in a timely manner and always wants to help out. Really enjoyed his class and would take it again if I could!
The most underrated prof of all time. Super reasonable and accommodating. Tests are very fair. Just pay attention in lectures and do the assignments. Flexible grading.
Hard to understand from time to time, but really helpful if you email him.
I was worried at first because it was hard to understand him due to accent barrier. However, if you did not understand something, he quickly clarified through emails or zoom meetings. He is a very caring professor who genuinely wants his students to do well. The course was heavy in assignments and Tophat sessions, but they were super helpful!
Dr. Kang is my most understanding prof for this semester. If you have a concern just email him and he will be very willing to help. Although sometimes the lectures are hard to understand due to the accent barrier, he has a lot of examples and clarifies often.
I would say his class was a little easier than many other math classes in the department. ASCS324 has 4 quizzes, 2 midterms, a final, and weekly tophats, so there's a fair amount of work. Dr Kang does stutter, which is likely because he's teaching math in a second language, but he will clarify and will always make time through zoom or office hours.
I can't even understand what bro is sayin
His accent is difficult to understand, but he goes above and beyond with his explanations.
Extremely difficult to understand, and explains concepts with a lot of repetition while underexplaining more crucial aspects. Lectures helped very little in understanding content, and demonstrations of key ideas lack prior motivation. While I'm sure they are a great professor, their poor communication skills obfuscate those strengths.
Would I take another class with him as my prof? No. He is really hard to understand and his notes are kind of hard to read. I do kinda feel bad for him because you can tell that he does want to help students learn but it's hard to understand him because of his accent. I don't know what he's talking about half of the time
Mark dropped from an A to a B because he's terrible. You won't understand anything he's saying; avoid taking any courses with him.
class notes all over the place could not understand with a very heavy accent, he made it super difficult to learn espically he taugh the hardest topic
His lesson is really hard to understand.
He wasnt terrible but his accent was nearly impossible to understand. I got through maybe 5 minutes of the first video of many and decided to just teach myself the unit with the completed notes but even that was complicated because his notes were messy. If it werent for the optional PASS session, I would not have done well on the exam.
Not good at in depth explanations or clearly communicating his ideas. notes are very messy and almost impossible to understand. had to teach myself this unit.
He has a strong accent, poor English grammar, and a stutter, but if you believe all that won't impact your learning, I definitely suggest taking him as a Stat prof. He cares a immensely about his students and really wants to see everyone succeed. He helped me achieve the best grade I have ever gotten in any Math class.
Once you get used to his accent he's okay.
He may be hard to understand however, his lectures are very helpful as he explains every topic very well. He is very lenient for grading tests and assignments, you just need to write anything and he will give partial marks. Make sure to do all the practice questions he posts to do well in the tests. Overall, great prof and takes teaching seriously.
he hones;ty is so hard to understand and doesnt teach the topic properly.
Once you get used to professor Kangs accent it is easier to understand but still, he does not teach his lectures very in-depth leaving students very confused about what to do. I learned more in a couple of hours doing an assignment helped by friends than I did going to class for two weeks.
He is extremely difficult to understand, and his writing is very messy (as he does not have a stylus). His teaching is horrible, each slide from week to week looks different, and doesnt explain anything. He attampts to teach parts of stats that are not important and skips over the important parts. I would steer clear of his teaching.
Dr. Kang has been a very kind and accommodating prof. He's a nice guy who really cares about his students. If there were issues with understanding his lectures, I found that reading the textbook helped. He also offers bonus marks via tophat which serve as a good way to get some practice in too. His tests have also been pretty fair and easy.
Dr. Kang's lectures are sometimes hard to follow but I know he tries his best. If you attend his office hours, he is much more helpful and he really does want his students to succeed. His office hours helped me get a better understanding of the difficult concepts. The midterm is tough though because there's an essay portion so be prepared.
The R codes that Dr. Kang provided for us literally saved my grade. I would not be able to do any of the homework questions without his R codes. I've heard that the other two lectures don't have R codes provided for them so definitely take stats with Dr. Kang so that you don't struggle with your homework and you'll know which formulas to use
Kangs lectures were hard to understand and not helpful. I learned more from one night of assignments compared to two weeks of lectures. In addition to this, he is extremely rude if you are not confident in stats. Attended a private office hours and he was extremely rude to the point I ended them because of how discouraged I was. Don't recommend.
Professor Kang is probably the most accessible prof I have ever met. He held multiple zoom office hours at 9pm just to help us with questions before the midterm. He's not the best at teaching but it's bearable. His r codes also helped me a lot with the assignments
Dr. Kang is super nice and helpful. Although he's sometimes confusing, he is super accessible outside of class to clarify any concepts. You can tell he cares about his students because he even offers extra office hours at 9pm just to help us. You should be fine in his class if you put in the work and attend office hours!
He provides R codes to make assignments and exams easier. He gives extensions and his notes are really good. If you want to do well, do the homework he provides and it should be an easy A. Classes can be attended online or in-person, which was really nice. He is one of the best STAT profs out there.
He provides all the r codes we need for the class which makes the class so much easier. He is also very open to providing extensions on assignments. He does have an accent but it is not hard to follow along. He has very straightforward notes and is very accessible if you need more help.
Prof Kang is really good. Use his R codes and do the practice he gives and you will do well. If you can't understand him, use his notes as they are very helpful. It was nice to have an online option to attend the class.
Extremely helpful during office hours.
Mr Kang seems like a nice guy who cares about his students but, when it comes to his teaching buckle up, his notes are poorly organized(although R code packages are good) and he speaks with a stammer which I found difficult to follow on top of his accent. I got an A+ in 213 and am severely struggling in this course. Overall was quite disappointed.
Dr Kang really cares about his students. He extended several of the assignment and quiz deadlines during tougher points in the semester. His notes are clear and straightforward. If I had to note down a con, it'd be that the classes are really fast-paced; I printed the slides ahead of time because I couldn't write everything down quickly enough
Everyone mentions his accent but it's quite understandable. He tries his best to teach well and genuinely cares about his students. If you don't understand something, he is super helpful during office hours!
He is not the best teacher and does not give the best explanations, his accent can also be confusing at times. However, he really cares for his students and will go an extra mile to help you in whatever you need and this makes up for everything else.
Horrible! Why did I even take this course and attend the lecture time, everything that he taught was nonsense. His accent makes it so difficult to understand and follow, the way he organizes his lectures and lecture notes are just pure nightmares! I hate to admit this but you will waste your parents' money if you take any of Kang's courses.
Dr Kang is very caring and genuinely wants his students to succeed. Throughout the semester, he provided numerous amounts of extra office hours before exams to help as many students as possible. Unlike other professors, he provides r codes which made the class so much easier.
Honestly, he gets a bad rap because of his accent and his stutter, but that's out of his control and you'll get used it. The practice version he provides for the midterm and lab exam are identical to the real test, so as long as you understand how to do those you should be fine
Dr. Kang wants the best for his students and he tries to curve the marks so that we all do good. Lectures were sometimes disorganized but if you read the slides ahead of time, you should be fine during class. His R codes were extremely helpful and his extra office hours were a tremendous help to my success in this class.
Dr. Kang was clear about what he expected from the tests, the tests were very easy/straightforward. I did not go to most of the lectures and instead, just read his notes. He only uses the best 5 of 6 for quizzes & tests, which helps the grade out. He is also very nice & efficient when responding to emails & questions in-office hours. Has accent.
Professor Kang is probably the best Professor you could ever ask for. At first I had a hard time understanding what he was saying because of the heavy accent, afterward, everything he says makes complete sense. He will sacrifice his own personal time to create zoom meetings and will extend his office hours to help those who need the extra help.
Had him for 325 and liked him, taking 327 with him and still like him. So many opportunities to test out what you know, questions he gives are actually the sort of questions you see on exams. Literally the only ACSC prof I've had that cares about his students, doesn't just do the bare minimum (you suck Scollnik). Also his accent is not that bad lol
His lectures are abysmal and his accent (not his fault) is egregiously difficult to understand. His midterm was incredibly difficult as well and nowhere near what was being taught in class. He (by no fault of his own) makes the class much harder than its supposed to be. I really adore Professor Kang but don't take this class with him. Not worth it
Kang is a great prof who really cares about his students, for example when the class average of an exam is a bit lower than he would like, he will boost it by giving everyone a bonus mark. While he does have an accent and can be hard to understand at times, his slides help clear up any misunderstandings. STAT 205 was overall a very simple class.
the best ACSC professor at the university. He genuinely cares about his students, puts a lot of effort into lectures, and provides examples in class that he goes through step by step. Initially, I was afraid of his strong accent but his dedication in and outside of class is admirable. If I could, I would take all my ACSC courses with him.
He is very passionate and goes over tons of examples in class step by step. He also offered my lecture through zoom and recorded every lecture, which was very helpful. He is extremely accessible outside of class time and puts a lot of effort into making sure you understand.
Great
He has an accent and can be harder to understand at times but he is so quick to answer emails and is very good at providing help. Probably the best prof I've had yet.
Heavy accent but tries his best to teach and is nice going about it. Was lenient grading and with missing quizzes and such, he gave me extensions.
Professor Kang is a wholesome guy. He is knowledgeable but after the first class there was a tremendous decline in attendance because of the fact that students can barely understand him when he teaches... I got used to it but at the same time it just adds to the difficulty of understanding the material. Which is unfortunate because he's very nice
Difficult to understand at first but get used to. Always high energy and excited to be there. He is great start to day even if the class isn't.
Dr. Sang Jin Kang is an amazing prof and is always very enthusiastic about his lessons and teaching. He is very accessible outside class and provides many opportunities to learn and improve. Provides lots of practice and gives extensions. One of the best professors I have ever had! His lectures are also very organized.
Professor Kang is such an enthusiastic prof! He makes it enjoyable to pay attention to his lectures and his slides are organized. People may find it hard to understand him with his accent but if you attend class regularly you will understand him. He is always available for help and responds to emails quickly!
I was really nervous to take Stats but I was pleasantly surprised. Once doing the assignments I felt confident. Dr. Kang is enthusiastic and passionate. He was a bit hard to understand at first due to his accent but you get used to it! Dr. Kang provides all the resources needed for success, and tests fairly. If I can do it, you can too!
He is super dedicated, and I found his accent understandable. The quizzes and assignments were easy and the midterms were fair. We were behind at times, but he is flexible with due dates. Overall very nice and approachable
Accent may be hard to understand sometimes but he uploads lectures online which you can use the subtitles to configure the words. But overall he is great at explaining concepts, class concepts were pretty simple and doing the practice he provides and going through slides/slide examples, you'll do great in this class.
he talks fast, stutters and has a heavy accent so it can be a bit hard to understand but he's very passionate and enthusiastic about his teaching, once you get past the accent his explanations are very good. He puts a lot of effort into his slides with lots of examples. his hand writing is also a bit messy tho.
For a class that's heavier on the theory side, his lectures are a lot harder to follow along with but he makes up for it with his energy. Tests also aren't too hard and are the exact same as the practice problems. Only issue is that he posts the practice solutions the day before or even the day of the exam. Excel assignments were fun and easy!
Prof. Kang is engaging and helpful, though his accent takes some getting used to. StuckStudy AI was a big help for test prep - highly recommend it alongside the free textbook.
He's our glorious king. Gave out extensions all the time. People gonna hate because he has a heavy accent, but you get used to it and start to understand him.
You'll get used to the accent quickly. He was extremely kind and would curve anything where the average was below 70%. He would email us all the time so we were up to date on any changes, and was extending due dates all the time by the end of the course. He also recorded lecture videos when the WiFi didn't work and students couldn't attend online
He has an accent and can be harder to understand at times but he is so quick to answer emails and is very good at providing help. Probably the best prof I've had yet.
Although he has an accent at first, you will definitely get used to it! He is honestly an amazing prof that genuinely cares about his students! There were a few assignments and in class top hat participation, but he provided amazing examples, explained everything well, and gave extensions! Tests are straight forward and what is outlined! Great guy!
Such a sweet guy! He made a subject that I usually struggled with in the past very easy to understand and was so helpful with everything. Very flexible and generous with live assessments and questions, and very on top of communication with the class. P.S. to all my Y1 Nursing students, would 100% recommend fulfilling the STAT requirement with him!
Dr. Kang is a respectful and amazing professor. He is very accommodative and understanding. He offers a zoom option to his in person classes, as well to many quizzes being fully online. He is so wholesome and he teaches the material very well. It is clear that he is extremely passionate about statistics.
