Prof. Niyogi is more than AMAZING. Loved going to her class. She was clear about everything she covered in class. One of the classes I enjoyed that semester. She makes sociology enjoyable and relatable.. lots of participation will take you a long way, make sure to do your reading. The book had anecdotes that were NOT boring!!! You will love her.
Very nice and helpful; thick accent makes it hard to understand sometimes. She is passionate about Sociology. The class is not what I expected; focused mainly around race, class, and gender inequalities with a strong liberal slant. Textbook is heavily used, but there is not too much homework. Can be an Easy A, I just didn't try very hard.
Niyogi is a really sweet lady. I was thoroughly confused all semester on what she wanted us to do, bc her lectures are confusing & I didn't feel prepared for the tests and papers. Attendance doesn't matter! Overall, I am happy with my grade. She's pretty funny, really nice, & very helpful in office hours. Just a tad confusing in class. Take her!
Amazing professor, so glad that she came to DVC. I learned so much from her, shes always prepared, her lectures are engaging, she knows her stuff! if you need help with a paper go to her office hours she will help. 3 reflection papers, midterm, final and a 5-10 page paper. she doesn't grade extremely hard but you need to put in hard work and effort
Very unclear on homework assignments, lectures are boring and based entirely on powerpoint presentations. One time the projector wouldn't work and she literally didn't know what to do. She called the office and waited for someone to come and fix it. Also, she's extremely liberal so if you have a problem with that, be prepared. Attendance mandatory!
Professor Niyogi seems very intelligent, but her skills as a teacher needs ALOT of refining. She does NOT respond to emails and is "dead" in terms of communication unless you go to her Office Hours. Her instructions for assignments are very muddled and she does not do much to clarify.
Niyogi is simply not a good teacher. Not only are her instructions muddled and confusing, but she makes no attempt to clarify anything at all. You will be confused the whole time you are enrolled in her class
My opinion on this class is very conflicted. Cause on one hand, she is a easy grader, does not take attendance, and gives very very simple tests (only two in the semester) that anyone can pass. However she is very boring in lecture (doesnt really matter if you dont show up like alot of students did until the test) so i guess take her?
Not the easiest teacher ever, but very enthusiastic, encourages group discussion. 3 short papers, 1 term paper, 2 tests. PARTICIPATION IS KEY. If you show up to every class, and say something relevant in the discussion often, she bumps you up a letter grade at the end of the semester. Really not a hard class if you put some effort in. I like her
I was very interested to learn more about sociology but I noticed that most of the class didn't even show up after a couple weeks (Niyogi doesn't drop any students since she doesn't take role). Her class is structured in a way that showing up isn't even necessary and I think she needs to change it up.
I had previously taken another Socio class, so did not find Niyogi's material that challenging. Attendance does not reflect in your grade what so ever. I didn't even crack open my book after the first month. I just wish this class was more interesting, or that she had a more engaging teaching style. Easy A, take diff class if looking for interest.
There are some truly wonderful teachers at DVC that are caring, attentive, and geniuely want to see their students succeed. Niyogi is none of those things. Niyogi only sees things her way. She is supreme. She is always right and nothing she does it wrong. One of the worst experience I had in a class.
Niyogi is a strict, but fair instructor when it comes to her lectures and assignments. Her lectures are very engaging where most of the classroom participates in. She is very strict about attendance. Her classes are held in large auditoriums and the class consists of 3 writing assignments 1 midterm, 1 term paper, 1 Final, and you will need 2 books
Niyogi is fantastic because you can actually NEVER show up to class and still pass with flying colors. Nothing she says on the lecture matters for the test and all the information can be find online (even though she NEVER uploads her PowerPoint although she says she will) and you only need the book ONCE for the essay. Easiest A I've ever gotten.
This was a really engaging class. Niyogi is an expert and makes all the lectures very interesting and easy to understand. If you put in the work, you can score an A.
An awesome critical thinking class. She gives lots of current examples to keep things fresh. The class dynamic is really fun. Her writing assignments are challenging.
Prof Niyogi is absolutely amazing! Her material knowledge and the way she tests on the subject is perfect. She acknowledges everyone's point of view. Some of her power points could be shorter. 3 short essays, 1 long essay, 2 in-class exams. She helps you with study guides for these exams.
Dr. Niyogi really wants her students to do well. There is a lot of reading for the class. But I loved attending the lectures. She includes everybody's perspective and creates a comfortable atmosphere. She is also very helpful one on one during office hours. Gives all the questions before exams.
This was one class I looked forward to every week. Great class discussions and topics of analysis. Lots of reading and writing but Prof. Niyogi is always there to help. I also enjoyed the group work and writing workshops.
Dr. Niyogi encourages discussion and participation but more importantly, acknowledges everyone's point of view. I like how she uses relatable examples during lecture. She is always clear and eager to help students. I really want to take more classes with her.
She's very clear and she knows what she's talking about. Prof. Niyogi is very passionate about what she teaches and brings up controversial topics. The class is very inspiring and interesting. There is a lot of reading and writing for this class. She posts the slides online and gives guides for the exams.
She has so much knowledge and so much to offer, and it's evident that she is very passionate about what she teaches. She treats all her students with respect, whether you see eye-to-eye with her or not. I personally didn't have to worry about that, because we shared a lot of the same views surrounding social justice issues. She's also super cute!
Dr. Niyogi is extremely sweet and there to help. I loved her as a person but her lectures were a bit dry. The class was relatively easy. Your participation isn't required in discussion but she'll grade you easier if you do. She assigns a lot of reading but as long as I paid attention in class I didn't have to read the book.
Prof. Nyogi is awesome! She really knows what she is talking about and gets really into class discussion. She is super cool and is always willing to help you outside of class! I learned a lot in her class and I always thought it was interesting!
Her class lectures are boring and hard to focus in. She never answers he email and only available during office hours. She gives 3 short reflection papers, a midterm, term paper, and final exam. Didn't really use the text book, just to study for exams.
Niyogi is amazing! It's obvious she cares deeply about the subject. The lectures really make you think and make you view things in a different way. I thought i was socially aware and open minded before this class, but this class definitely expanded my outlook. There's a lot of readings, all posted on d2l, but they're interesting. Highly recommend.
She cares about her subject and her students. Do the readings, attend lectures and see her during office hours to get an A.
Professor Niyogi was extremely helpful throughout the semester. Her lectures are interesting, and if you pay close attention and ask questions, you won't struggle. There are 3 reflection papers (sort of like writing stories), one term paper, a midterm, and a final. Low stress, very interesting, great teacher.
Simply loved Prof Niyogi. Shes sweet, clear and just amazing. She does PowerPoint lectures which are super easy to understand. She's so well spoken! You can tell she loves teaching. 1 Midterm, 1 Final, 3 Reflections (1 page each) or 1 Presentation instead of Reflection. Overall, great professor. I'm taking her again this upcoming semester. 10/10.
Shes one of the teachers that you know cares about what she teaches and hopes to incite students to do as well. LOTS to read, Some of the material is very dry but she puts all the readings up online so you don't have to purchase a book. You must know the material to pass. Two tests One paper. Final, Fair grader and great lectures. Would take again.
She gives extra credit opportunities and posts lectures online! Prof Niyogi is a very sweet and quirky lady. She really cares about her student and is always willing to help. Would love to take her again!
Professor Niyogi's course is very boring. She does not use the book, except for the 1 essay you will have to write, and her quizzes and tests cover nothing from the book, or her lectures, only what the video's you watch will cover. Too, she does not answer emails, except maybe once, and her grading does not make sense.
I learned literally nothing, not one single thing, from the professor. The readings were great. She never used them at all, but hey at least i got something for it. She seemed to just want to talk about whatever field she wanted in the subject area. also she never presented Arguments to her teachings, just one sided information with little substanc
Did not learn one thing all semester. Would try so hard every class period to pay attention but the way her slides are formatted and how she explains things just didn't make any sense at all. Only 2 quizzes, 1 final and 3 papers for the whole semester. So if you dont do well on one.. you're screwed. Try to stay away from this teacher
im not a sociology major but her class on race and ethnicity is pretty straightforward if you pay attention and do the readings on time for the most part i like how she encourages students to speak out in class discussions about the material covered in class its simple 2 exams 3 reflections and a midterm paper do them all and you're solid :)
If you are comfortable learning by mostly lectures and taking notes, Niyogi is great. It will be hard to pay attention in her class if you don't. She was also an instructor at UCD, and I think she is used to the heavy lecture format rather than smaller classes and discussions at DVC. We only had a few assignments. PAY ATTENTION TO THE LECTURES!!
I found this class fascinating and something to look forward to every week. She is passionate about the material and keeps everyone engaged through discussion. She makes me want to major in sociology.
Class material is hard to learn, but the actual assignments are easy and can be done in a reasonable amount of time. Definitely keep up with the textbook if you can, but you won't die if you fall behind. She's so kind and cares a lot about her students, but the course material can get hard. Lectures are important to pay attention to.
This class is an easy A but it is very, very lecture heavy. She talks the entire class period and it can get dull very quickly. She does use powerpoint, but they are not the most helpful slides. She is very passionate about sociology and is a good teacher, I just cannot stand sitting through her long lectures sometimes.
She's pretty cool. Luckily there are no tests besides the midterm and final. But they are worth a lot so definitely study. She isn't an easy grader either. But she's really passionate about what she teaches.
Very smart, woke professor who does her best to showcase what she feels is wrong with the world. The class itself is intense-most of your grade is reliant on the midterm final and term paper. She provides prep questions for the midterm and final-but they require pretty extensive reading and high-level comprehension. Please go to office hours!
Prof. Niyogi is a caring educator. She tries her best to present information. She loves teaching and she can talk for hours. She is also very down to earth.
Niyogi's tests aren't terribly difficult because she gives the test questions beforehand, but her lectures are very vague and there's a lot of outside studying needed to do well. The workload is very heavy during the 2nd half of summer, so procrastinating on the summer assignments is more likely than not to backfire.
Very kind & intelligent woman. Research Methods can get dry due to the subject but also due to lack of dynamic lecturing/interactive in class activities. LOTS of long power points and she moves very quickly. My only complaint is that IMO she doesn't give enough time to finish papers. Assigns them and literally expects them due the next class.
Took her for my SOCIO-120 class and it was interesting... Her lectures were scattered all over the place and she seemed to have always repeated the same stories that she would share. Her tests were hard and I had a hard time understanding where her lectures were going most of the time. Would not recommend. Would not take again.
Prof. Niyogi made me decide to major in Sociology. Her passion for Sociology is absolutely contagious. She posts her slide on canvas and this is super useful before exams. She also posts exam questions in advance.
I love Dr. Niyogi! She's a sweet woman who's passionate about what she's teaching and VERY woke. Lectures can be dull at times, but class discussions always helped to spice things up. There's only a few assignments, though, so make sure you do well on the ones you're given (group presentation, 3 mini essays, 1 midterm, 1 final, 1 term paper).
Niyogi is a great professor, however I did take intro to research methods. The class material was incredibly boring. If you are a sociology major, that sucks lol, you gonna have to take this class. If you want to take it for fun, DON'T! Niyogi is good, but once again this class was SO boring.
Professor Niyogi makes her class hard. Her lectures dont really have much to do with the quizzes. She assigns few homework, but when she didnt grade one of mine to bump my grade up from a C to a B, she was rude and didnt put it in the grading system.
This is one class at DVC I look forward to attending. She makes it easy to grasp concepts by giving lots of real life examples. She is passionate about social justice and this shows in everything she does for the college. We cover many controversial topics but through civil discussions.
Dr. Niyogi is an amazing sociologist and has deep knowledge of her field. She really wants her students to succeed. She did not give up on me when I was going through a tough time. The assignments in this class include informal essays, presentations, term paper and in class exams.
This was the introduction to race and ethnicity class and so lots of uncomfortable topics but Dr. Niyogi is a skilled educator who can handle this stuff with empathy. The readings for this class are dense but eyeopening. Class discussions are amazing and the class really felt like a community.
Have a taken quite a few classes with her. Her passion for sociology is contagious. You can telly she loves her job. All readings and slides are online. She is very understanding and accessible outside class. Office hours are super helpful.
Dr. Niyogi is a wonderful teacher, mainly because she is so knowledgeable and passionate about sociology. The subject material in this course is impacting the way I view society and the people that govern it in a very drastic way. I also like how helpful she is during office hours.
This class has changed the way I think about everything. Dr. Niyogi is a dedicated teacher that is an expert in her field but always listens and respects her students. The class has a lot of reading and writing but all the assignments are meaningful. Definitely taking more classes with her.
Niyogi is a good teacher and she is very intelligent person, but the classes felt like they went on for hours since the lectures were really slow. The quizzes were pretty hard, but I found that if you had a good topic and really put in the work for the exercises, you'd do well. The whole class was out of 100 points, but she gave extra credit.
Research methods is definitely tough. Dr. Niyogi wants you to do well though, so she offers a few opportunities to view speeches/presentations for 1% extra credit each, AND a presentation that you can do for up to 5% EC. If it wasnt for the extra credit, I wouldve gotten a B. She doesnt reply to emails but shes helpful during office hours
The tests are hard almost not related with the class discussions. Hard! if you are learning English do not take the class it will be so difficult. But the teacher is passionate of her career if you like sociology you might love the class.
Not an easy A but any good class isnt, shes clear about what she expects, and for each exam you get a study that has roughly 12 questions on it and she selects 6 to put on exam also has a quizlet with answers to study guide on them, show up and pay attention and youll pass , shes very passionate about socio
Dr. Niyogi made me fall in love with Sociology! I changed my major from psychology to Soc. The course content is really interesting and relevant. The course is well organized and has clear expectations. If you keep up with the readings and follow directions you can score an A.
Professor Niyogi was very political in her lectures which was not appropriate. I felt very outcasted in her class and she was not very respectful of other views. It was defiantly the wrong class for me. She bashed right wing people constantly. Inappropriate.
This is the best class at DVC. Dr. Niyogi is very passionate and knowledgeable about Sociology and connects all the material with real life examples. There are many extra credit opportunities throughout the semester. She provides the questions before exams and is always ready to help.
Dr. Niyogis passion for sociology is infectious and inspired me to major in sociology. Her methods class is very dry due to the dense nature of the subject but she offers extra credit and is always willing to offer support and guidance. Each test is worth 7.5 points so making flash cards and studying is a MUST. Not an easy A but very informative
Sangha's passion is infectious. Although there are a lot of readings, paying attention is of utmost importance. I didn't do a single a reading and still got an A+. She does make mistakes in grading (she put in the extra credit as an actual assignment which hurt my grade because I didn't do all of it) so point them out and do the readings!
Dr. Niyogi is respected and known throughout DVC for her Social justice work. She encourages all her students and offers extra credit in all her classes so students can apply what they're learning outside the class. Btw, extra credit is extra so it is not included in the 100 points. She just wanted us to see how many extra points we scored.
This is one of the few classes I actually looked forward to attending at DVC. I am looking to major in Sociology and Social Justice and this class works for that. Lots of reading but lectures and discussion are amazing. Prof. Niyogi handles controversial issues with lots of compassion, grace and humor. Super helpful during office hours.
The course content is interesting and relevant. She gives exam questions before hand and is very helpful during office hours. She is patient and caring. There are many extra credit opportunities and I have never felt so engaged before both in the class and the college. Best experience at DVC.
Dr. Niyogi's class changed my whole perspective on life! I enjoy every single class and learn something new. There's lots of reading, short assignments, term paper midterm and final exam. She provides all the questions before hand. She's really helpful during office hours. Take her class, it will change your world.
Prof. Niyogi definitely knows her stuff, but the semester I took with her was a little unorganized. Her syllabus and directions for projects are often confusing, but luckily she's fine if you ask for clarification. I feel like 30% of the difficulty was just because something was suddenly due in a week that she had never mentioned.
Great Professor.
Dr. Niyogi is very passionate about the topics, so she tends to trail off during lecture into other subtopics. Her grading criteria is very simple and straight forward, however she doesn't offer much room for error. If you don't do the assignments or study well enough for the exam, it hurts your grade badly and significantly.
Dr. Niyogi teaches Sociology and Social Justice at DVC. Her course made me fall in love with Sociology. She is very easy to talk to both in class and during office hours. Her guidelines are very clear and she really wants her students to do well. She also helps you connect with clubs and everything that's going on in the community.
Nicest Prof at DVC hands down! Her passion for social issues is obvious. She provides the questions for the exams before hand and guides you through the whole term paper process. I also formed really good friendships in this class since there's plenty of group discussion.
Most fun and inspiring class at DVC. Prof. Niyogi clearly knows her subject and creates an exciting and inclusive class environment. Lots of extra credit for attending speaker events on campus. Guidelines for exams and papers are clear. I wrote my paper on transphobia and felt very proud of the final product.
Most caring and engaged teacher at DVC. Prof. Niyogi is an amazing teacher but also connects us to so many events in the college by offering lots of extra credit stuff. Classes are interesting and slides are posted on canvas after class. She gives the questions to exams before hand and checks in with us every class. Very helpful during office hours
She is very nice teacher and passionate about sociology but can be a little political. Lectures are really long and most times drifts off subject. She never replies to emails so you have to catch her during office hours or after class.
I honestly have mixed feelings about prof Niyogi. I mostly liked her lectures but also the work at the end of the semester was rough. There was basically nothing to do and then bam! 3 big things all at once: final exam, group presentation, AND a 5 page paper. Most profs would only pick 1 or 2. Tons of reading but not necessarily mandatory.
Loved this class. Prof. Niyogi is passionate about social issues and really wants her students to do well. She gives lots of help outside class and keeps us connected with all the events in our college and community. Readings are interesting and test questions are provided before hand.
Definitely take a class with her. She is an expert on race and immigration. All the topics are super relevant. Go to her before exams and paper and you will do well. She gives extra credit for attending events.
Can't wait to take another class with her. She creates a very cool vibe in the classroom. Lots to read but really interesting readings. Group presentation, 2 exams and term paper.
Very unclear and unorganized. Worst teacher Ive ever met in my life. The quizzes are really hard, since the quizzes are totally different things from what we learned. There are two quizzes, three papers and a final. If you fail on one, just quit this class. Stay away from Nigogi!!!
I appreciate Prof. Niyogi especially with this hard transition. She has been compassionate and helpful. She keeps us posted about upcoming homework and assignments. I enjoyed her face to face class much better but I am glad to still have this class.
Required class for major ): 4 difficulty b/c directions for assignments are so unclear. Lectures consist of her ranting the entire time which gets annoying, even for someone that is liberal. Only 6 assignments whole semester so hard to get A. I checked the grades she gives on what-if scores and she has never given some1 a 100% on any assignment.
Great proessor. Incrediblly knowledgeable. Excellent understanding of oncepts. Easy and fun at the same time.
If you can take another prof, DO IT. Don't know about her other classes but in socio 123 instructions are super unclear, even when you ask MULTIPLE times for clarification, she's never given an 100% for a paper/proj to the entire class, so don't expect hard work to pay off- also grade is based off of 6 assignments, 3 of which are lumped together.
She is passionate about social justice, but when it comes to 123, she is far from an ideal prof. She was kind enough to make accommodations for our class due to COVID, but her instructions were extremely unclear, and she literally did not teach us the rest of the semester but still graded extremely hard. Don't bother taking if you want an A.
I'm not a sociology major so I didn't want to spend as much time on this class as I did. However, Prof. Niyogi is a very intelligent person and her lectures are interesting. There is A LOT of writing and there are only 6 things in the grade book but she doesn't grade harshly. There is also extra credit available. Be ready to read too!!
Last semester at dvc, had to take for major req. Took her during covid and she did not teach at all. Only put lect slides but were not helpful. Her instructions are confusing and repetitive. She grades tough even tho she did not teach. She did make adjustments to the class which was helpful.
Prof Niyogi has been fantastic so far. The class is very well organized and easy to follow. The readings and material are very interesting. Assignments are clear and fair. She is always available via zoom.
Dr. Niyogi is super passionate and humble. She connects our topics with everything that's happening right now. Lots of discussion posts and it's fun seeing posts by classmates. I am really enjoying this class. Her mini lectures are very helpful.
First time taking Sociology and now I want to major in it. She uses amazing readings and examples. This course literally changed my whole view on life. Summer session is intense but she gives lots of time to complete the different discussion posts and it's great to read what others wrote.
Very passionate professor! Her online course is great, it's mostly discussion posts, easy quizzes (you have 3 tries on the quiz, it's pretty much a guaranteed 5/5). The most heavy assignments are your final and term paper. Her lectures are short (15 mins) and engaging. You won't regret taking her class.
She's a very nice professor. The class was fairly easy. No textbook required. Only one final paper, and final exam, where she gives you lots of help and time to complete them. Until the finals, it's just discussions and easy quizzes. She gave very short but useful video lectures to help with them. I definitely recommend this professor.
This was my first sociology course and I found it to be rather interesting. She posts videos and pdf articles every week before giving a quiz w/ multiple tries. Final consists of a research paper & separate questions. Given over 1 week to do these assignments. Found the course to be eye-opening when it came to explaining race and ethnicity.
Professor Niyogi is extremely passionate about what she teaches and that's what makes her a good professor. I would recommend taking her class since it is a simple course that is perfect for an intro to sociology. Her course is based on class discussions (easy grader), quizzes (simple), and at the end a written final exam and term paper.
Prof Niyogi has a PhD and has a strong passion for of sociology and it's value. Teaching wise though I wish they spent a lot more time actually engaging with students. The class was entirely online and asynchronous so my expectations were not high but receiving almost zero personal feedback from Niyogi kept me from actually learning.
I loved the clarity that this professor has during her lectures. She has the ability to provide different examples from different perspective. It is a socio class so naturally there may be people who disagree, but her way of teaching is not to bash others but provide an introspection & perspective that allows you to see things from multiple angles
There is final paper worth a great majority of your grade.I felt so disappointed with my final grade because throughout the entire semester I held an A grade because I completed every assignment with a perfect score. The final paper mattered so much because I got a 75% and the highest grade she gave was 80% with no feedback. I don't recommend.
Dr. Niyogi really cares about her students and about sociology. She is passionate about racial justice and connects the class with everything that's happening on campus. Try and jump on zoom office hours coz she's very easy to talk to and gives lots of help on the final project. Weekly discussion and quizzes that are easy if you stay on top of it.
Really enjoyed this class. Very well organized in modules online with an antiracist take on social problems. Class content is engaging and readings and videos are easy to grasp. Final project has a lot of points so get help from the teacher. She is very open to questions and gave me lots of help on the paper.
Zero cost materials and all the readings and videos are eye opening. Prof. Niyogi is very clear about assignments and has discussion and quiz due on Mondays which helped a lot. Final project is tough so I would check in with her more if I had more time. Great class overall.
Everything is well organized and clear to understand. Dr. Niyogi is supportive and fair. Weekly discussions and quizzes and term paper at the end. Readings and other materials are free and interesting. This class gave me a lot to think about and analyze.
Class was fine. The content was somewhat disorganized and Professor was somewhat hard to understand. Not due to accent but the cadence to the recorded lecture.
Professor Niyogi clearly enjoys the subject and cares about students beyond the classroom. Connects the content with real life. Readings and assignments are relevant and discussions are great to get to know classmates online. Gives lots of help with term paper. Definitely want to take her class this fall.
She is always willing to help and makes the material accessible. I would love to take a class in person since I did miss interaction with other students. Discussion posts are fun and quizzes are easy. Term paper at the end is challenging so get help early.
She has a PhD so she's passionate about the subject. 5 MC quizzes, had 3 attempts to do it, pretty easy as long as you've watched the lectures. Lectures are short and interesting. Discussion boards are easy. One term paper to write at the end. She gives detailed feedback on all assignments. All readings were posted. Would take her again.
I took her asynchronous summer class and it was really straightforward with easy to do assignments. Just one essay for the final assignment.
Easy and very nice teacher! She grades the final paper much tougher than anything else, so make sure you put effort into it.
Good professor. Professor Niyogi is caring and knowledgeable about her subject. The class is graded based on discussion posts, quizzes, and a term paper due at the end of the semester. Make sure to try your best on the term paper because it makes a large portion of your grade.
She is passionate about the subject but the lectures are dull and hard to understand. Her feedback is unclear and off topic. THERE IS ALOT OF READING!!!!!!!! She does not provide feedback on your final paper at all.
Fairly easy class, with one discussion post and quiz each week. Quizzes are easy if you watch the lectures, readings aren't really necessary. Only one paper at the end of the term; it's not super challenging, but it is pretty lengthy
Dr. Niyogi's socio-120 class was fairly easy, which is why I'm thankful to take this as an online summer class. Not once did I stress for this class. Her quizzes, discussion posts, and paper are so simple, and you learn quite a bit. I truly am thankful for having an easy summer class like this. I feel so relieved! Take her class!!
Just...no. Lectures are not helpful. Explanations aren't clear (lectures or assignment instructions). Not good with communication. She seems like a nice person but is not a good teacher--sad because she clearly loves sociology. After this experience, I kinda hate socio. Have a learning disability? She won't get it. Take someone else's class.
Dr. Niyogi cares about Social Justice and provides many extra credit opportunities to attend speaker events. I loved the discussion posts and in class discussion. Learned a lot in this class.
Genuinely cares about her students. She is up front about being left-leaning. There are many controversial topics in this class. Visit her for office hours coz she helps a lot with the final project
Best class I've taken at DVC or anywhere. There is so much to learn in this class. The readings assigned were amazing and the films we watched all were fantastic. She really listens to students and treats them with respect. She was able to create a sense of community in the classroom. Discussion posts and short quizzes weekly.
Prof. Niyogi is the best teacher to take for SOC120. Her class was online and very organized. Her quizzes were short and the information was on the lecture videos and readings assigned. Grade is based on discussions as well as one final paper, in which she gives plenty of time for.
Her class is organized and assignment expectations are consistent every week. Work load is light which is so great. I believe what made this class more difficult is that she is a slow grader and does not give clear feedback on how to improve nor what her expectations were. Communication isn't the best. Easy class though
relatively short lectures that supplements the assigned readings. discussion posts are assigned every week with a short and easy quiz! she didnt give any feedback on my term paper which could aide in my improvement, but i still ended with an A regardless.
Dr. Niyogi is a passionate educator and open about being a social justice educator. Try and take her in person. You won't regret it. Lots of support for the final project for which you can choose term paper or presentation. Weekly discussion posts for the first half of the semester.
LOVE Dr. Niyogi! I've taken SOCIO 120, 121, 135, and will be taking 123 with her this fall. She helped spark my passion for sociology and social justice, and the topics discussed in class were very applicable to current-day problems. The material is easy to understand, and homework is low effort. There are a few papers but so easy to do.
Clearly cares about students and her subject. Prof. Niyogi makes class really fun and her readings and discussions are relevant and connect with everyday life. No exams!
Very knowledgeable about Sociology of Race and Immigration. She is always willing to help and her weekly modules are well organized. Hope to take in person class with her next semester. Assignments are interesting and work load is not bad at all.
In her class, Dr. Sanghamitra Niyogi presents factual untruths as truths. When presented with multiple pieces of evidence that what she is presenting in class is not factually accurate, she doubles down and reiterates the untruths as facts. This is not education but indoctrination.
Professor Niyogi's SOC120 class is a straightforward and manageable online course. The assignments, including quizzes and a term paper, are reasonable, and the lectures are informative. unstuck study and other study tools like ChatGPT can be helpful for preparing. Overall, a solid class choice.
I never read any of the readings or watched the lectures. Only did the discussion posts. The quizzes are really easy, four questions you can guess on and have multiple attempts. The final paper was kinda difficult but she's an easy grader and I got a 28/30.
Only went to a few classes but I thought her lectures weren't helpful at all and as our final we had a term paper which she gave no feedback to. Other than that her class workload was very doable.
She teaches from a narrow worldview which she sticks to, even when confronted that there are inaccurate and offensive things in the materials. This class seems to only push this view, not to educate. It either reinforces a view you already have or it indoctrinates. Racism & hate are the focus, rather than race/ethnicity as concepts...disappointing!
I had a great time in her class. Prof. Niyogi organizes the material well on Canvas and in class discussion is really fun. I like how she keeps us engaged with all the events on campus. Grading directions are clear and she is super helpful during office hours. Can't wait to take more classes with her.
I loved the readings assigned in this class and I learned a lot overall. She provides many extra credit opportunities and is accommodating about late work if you keep her posted. Weekly discussion posts with super easy quizzes. Final project is challenging but she offers a lot of help. I am excited to take more Sociology classes with her.
I've taken both Socio-121/123. Near negligible effort, grades not posted for weeks, no flexibility for late submissions if emergencies arise, extremely outdated class materials. Worst of all she will take over a WEEK minimum to answer emails, if she responds at all. She's the only professor offering classes needed to transfer with a Socio degree :(
All online and asynchronous but Prof Niyogi makes herself very accessible during office hours. Mini lectures are recorded and uploaded and readings are interesting and not too hard. No exams but a challenging final project. Go to her early for help on the final project. Really eye opening class.
OER book so Zero cost for this course. Dr. Niyogi made Methods fun and accessible. I am a Soc major and I have taken three courses with her and enjoyed each one. The course format is easy to follow and she will meet with you on zoom besides office hours. Weekly discussion posts but the topics are really interesting.
Prof. Niyogi really cares about Sociology and Social Justice. Class discussions are really fun so far. She has clear guidelines on everything. She posts her lectures online and all the material is free. Not too much reading and weekly discussions aren't so bad. I would love to take more classes with her.
Prof. Niyogi makes the class really easy. I love the topics on the weekly discussion posts. She is accommodating if you let her know what's going on. This class made me love Soc and I think I will major in it. No exams just discussions, quizzes and final project. Make sure to go to office hours.
Amazing class and al the readings and materials are available free of cost. Prof. Niyogi is very knowledgeable about the topic of racism and very kind with her students. She connects us with campus events and cares about social justice. Super easy quizzes and weekly discussions. Get help from her for final project.
Pretty straight forward class. Weekly modules uploaded with enough time for assignments. In person class is fun with lots of discussion. No exams but weekly posts and final project. Should be easy if you don't miss class and keep up with weekly modules. Clear and well organized.
Class is super fun. All the modules are well organized. Weekly discussions, easy short quizzes final term paper. No exams! She just makes it stress free. Should be an easy A if you complete all assignments.
Great class even though the topis are heavy. Dr. Niyogi handles tough conversations with a lot of kindness and patience. Readings films are very interesting. Participation points for class discussion, weekly posts, short quizzes and a final project. There are also extra credit assignments. Well organized class. Definitely take a class with her.
This class is definitely more fun than I imagined. Dr. Niyogi makes research methods accessible and not as scary. We complete discussions in the early part of the course and then get into 3 research exercises. Final research proposal requires time and meeting with Dr. Niyogi to make sure everything is on point.
Very kind and inspiring teacher. Go to office hours for help. She is very prompt with email. I love the extra credit events she links us up with. Her lectures are very clear and easy to follow. Definitely want to take a face to face class with Prof. Niyogi. No exams, just weekly posts and final paper.
Very enjoyable class. Super organized and instructions are very clear. Quick to respond to email questions. Lectures are great with loads of discussion. No exams. Weekly posts and easy quizzes. One final project.
This class is essential in this day and age. Dr. Niyogi is an expert on the topic of antiracism and all the course material is eye opening. She cares about students and wants them to succeed. I enjoy in class discussions and look forward to class every week. Weekly discussions and quizzes and one final project.
I look forward to this class every week. Amazing discussions in class and Dr. Niyogi brings so much expertise and passion into this class. Weekly posts and quizzes are easy. She gives lots of help for the final project.
Prof. Niyogi's class is very well organized and easy to follow. Each module for the week has clear readings, lectures and assignments. She is very responsive and always warm during office hours. I look forward to taking more classes with her.
Professor Niyogi is a very kindhearted, and well-intentioned woman. However, her sociology class is less so a class on sociology, than a class to discuss issues that the left-wing believes should be addressed. I felt as though it was more of a gender studies class than a sociology class. She's an easy grader, so at the very least, there's that.
Very engaging class with lots of interaction and discussion. Class time goes by quickly. All assignments are online. No test or exams. Discussions, quizzes and final project. All the readings and materials are very relevant.
I really enjoy professor Niyogi's class because she makes the material easy to understand with relatability, inspiration, humor and charisma. She ensures that the class is never boring, and she explains a topic in many different scenarios so that if we didn't understand the first time, we would have a better understanding the second time around.
The course was relatively tame, with an average number of assignments to do that didn't make the workload too overwhelming. The teacher would go on tangents unrelated to the material and sometimes presented information that was incorrect. "Discussions" seemed very one-sided, with students who disagreed with her being shut down with no explanation.
She is very interactive with the class which helps learning in the class a lot easier and you can tell she loves what she is teaching so it is more enjoyable to sit through class. She is also amazing at answering questions. Weekly discussions and quizzes in the first half. Second half is focused on drafts leading to the final project.
I appreciate that this professor works to assess our experience and knowledge about the subjects being taught in order to keep us engaged in how the material is applied to the real world, enhancing the value of the material. Course modules are really well organized. She's amazing very intelligent educated woman very happy to get to learn from her!
As a student personally I find myself confused about some of the material, but she's always present during her office hours and is more than happy to speak with her students!! She's an amazing professor I would highly recommend her. All her materials, lectures and assignments make the class accessible. And its Zero Cost!
4 essays throughout the semester she's very understanding and grades leniently as long as you show her u know the material, her quizzes are so easy only a few questions with no time limit she's a absolutely amazing professor she cares about her students take her!!!
Prof. Niyogi's class has been eye opening. I learned a lot this semester and hope to take more classes with her. She is super engaged with students and other events on campus. She connects us with lots of organizations through extra credit. Her class is well organized and easy to follow along.
So sad this class will be over. Each class session was so healing. Dr. Niyogi really wants her students to succeed and is always willing to help with assignments. I would love to take more classes with her. I put in tons of work into the final project but I feel really satisfied.
135 wasn't hard at all. If you just do your assignments and prepare your paper well you'll be just fine!
This class wasn't difficult, Professor Niyogi is nice and caring. There isn't too much work, do your assignments and put effort into the end of semester paper, and you should be ok. If you're a sociology major, you will enjoy her lectures and discussions, if you're not and this a gen ed class, you will too and get an easy A.
Professor Sanga is amazing, I highly recommend utilizing her office hours if you take an online course. She wants her students to succeed and understand the material she is teaching. You have about 4 papers one being your final project with quizzes and discussion post along the way. Take her!
Took her summer 120 course very easy to balance this class with my others because she assigns a doable amount of HW. her assignments were really fun and creative. If you cant pass this class with an A ... it may just be you lol.
Dr. Niyogi makes class meeting fun and engaging. She is very prompt with grading. Weekly discussions and short quizzes and no timed exams. I like the hybrid format since she has nicely organized Canvas modules. I am looking forward to taking more classes with her.
One of the best teachers at DVC. She assigns theorists but also lots of other materials like videos and news stories that makes class very interesting and accessible. She is a fair grader and always available in person or on zoom. Lots of extra credit opportunities. She gives excellent feedback on assignments. No regrets so far.
Prof. Niyogi is a very good sociologist, but a substandard teacher. Lectures are very boring and slow, and she relies very heavily on reading material and documentaries. Decent if you're just getting into sociology or need to tick off an IGETC class.
