Lectures are very boring. Slides are not detailed at all, which is hard especially since the readings are super wordy. But he is open to feedback. The quizzes are only hard when they aren't open book. The group presentation he marks very fairly. Horrible at responding to emails. But a super nice guy.
His lectures are pretty interesting and the workload is fair. If you read and go to class the quizzes are easy. He's really easy going and good at giving feedback in person.
Not much lecturing, mostly discussion based. The reflections/quizzes force you to read, but ends up being useful and the conversations were better because of them. He has a great sense of humour.
He's a great prof who is clear with expectations. Would take another class with him.
First off, I'd like to say that Sanjay is a really nice and chill guy. I took 2 classes with him POL200 and POL339(317). However, most lectures I had no clue what was going on because the lecture notes were so broad. For both courses, quizzes are exceptionally hard. Uses too many examples / complex ones that are hard to understand. Fair marker.
I'm not exactly sure why students at other universities gave him such a good rating. Sanjay is very unclear during lectures, and is not helpful in office hours. He rambles on ALOT, and his questions quizzes are almost impossible to study for because he uses trick questions. If you value your own sanity, do not take his classes.
Too many random examples, very confusing. Might as well not go to class and just read the textbook and go to tutorial- you'd learn a lot more! Lectures were very random and I didn't really see how they related to the readings since the class didn't understand what Sanjay was saying
For a mandatory methods course, Sanjay makes it interesting. The course starts off really hard to grasp, but the bigger picture starts to become clearer. He helped me a lot with my final assignment in office hours. I'd take a course with him again for sure.
He's a good prof, he is really passionate about the topic. He goes off on tangents and anecdotes sometimes, but he makes you think and asks tough questions. I don't come to class to hear a prof recite the readings to me. The quizzes are easy if you just do the readings.
Lectures were boring and all over the place. Being a mandatory class for a P.S. major, a better instructor should be given the course
Unfair they made us take this course, but Professor Jeram made it pretty good. Tip: go to office hours to get help with with assignment.
Excellent Professor. Very approachable, insightful, and refreshing.
Pretty easy course if you do the readings. Professor Jeram is an organized prof and makes the expectations clear.
his lecture slides are not detailed which is hard to follow (is mostly lecture based) but overall a very nice and laid back guy. Has clear expectations and guidelines for assignments and tests, easy class if you follow his instructions and study from lecture/vocab notes for exams
Interesting class. Using Top Hat kept lectures from getting boring. Gave me good advice for my paper. The tests can be tricky if you don't study.
Good prof! Need to study textbook along with lecture notes to get a good grade on final and midterm. Paper guidelines were easy to follow however, his lectures were not easy to follow.
Amazing prof! Taking POL 200 with him now because I enjoyed his teaching style, his tests were super easy, and papers were super straight forward! Loves to help out students and overall a great prof!
He's a good prof, you can tell he cares about his students. Nice to look at too!
Not the most exciting class, but good professor. Would take something else with him.
The prof is essentially amazing, but the course subject itself - eh. He gives good feed back and is quite lively. Usually very inclusive and makes the class more interactive. Very less pop quizzes but quite sudden too. The tests aren't that hard and is pretty nice when he marks the papers.
While the course content itself was extremely dry and boring at times, Sanjay really tried to explain concepts and material in a way that actually made sense. Really strong lecturer. Tests are fair, just study and attend lecture as it really helps with understanding the material. Quizzes are random but easy marks as they're open book.
Sanjay is a great lecturer, he's young and knows how to connect with the class. The course material was super great. I decided to take another course with him because it was so good. He is a 10/10
He was the first prof I had in university and honestly I was blessed. He was always ready to make the lectures not too boring, and he contacted us ahead of time when class was cancelled. Midterm was pretty good, final okay, papers straightforward. Daily pop quizzes were easy and open book. Definitely would take a course with him again
Sanjay is a great professor who seems to genuinely care about the success of his students. There is a lot of course material but his lectures aren't boring. Would definitely recommend starting the term paper well before the due date and going over it with him or your TA.
One of the best experiences Ive had with a professor in the department. Makes a serious effort to clearly communicate course material and prepare students for papers/tests. Extremely personable and a generous grader. Can make even boring material into engaging lectures. Accessible and super understanding of personal conflicts. Would take again
super professional guy. I loved how specific the midterm and final outlines were, he told us exactly what we had to study (give definitions and importance of 10 vocal terms from class, some multiple choice, and in final there was also 2 essay questions, tho he gave the 5 potential topics beforehand) study hard and you'll do great.
Wonderful professor that is open to feedback. The class content is a little dry but he makes it bearable (his looks help). Hardest part are the pop quizzes worth 2% each (takes the mark of the best 5). Mostly tests on lectures, he even posted them online to help students study for the final! Definitely recommend taking a course with him.
i went into this class knowing nothing about poli sci, and got an A-. Sanjay's class was fair because as long as you know what your talking about and can back it up you'll do well. the textbook isn't needed, but it explains things better. there was one paper which was 1500 words, pop quizzes, and 2 exams. tutorials are key to understanding better.
Generally a good prof who has clear expectations. Helps that hes cute and funny in a nerdy kinda way.
Good professor teaching pretty basic government and politics content, if you're a half decent social science major this class is more than fair. Lectures are kind of dry, and his slides are really basic and don't really cover what he says, but the textbook fills in the gap just fine. Sanjay Jeram is also a handsome man with a nice jawline.
Really nice, knowledgeable, and open. He teaches things really clearly, tests were MC/some short answer are were straight. He balanced his grading criteria fairly so it was balanced (almost equal weighting on pop quizzes, tests, papers, etc.)
Sanjay was a great prof who was really clear in both his criteria and his teachings. He assigned us online articles to read, and the lectures were pretty engaging overall. Class isn't mandatory, but he does surprise pop quizzes occasionally. I would highly recommend his class to take, it's relatively straightforward and pretty interesting.
10/10 would smash
I enjoyed having Sanjay as a professor! He's still working out some kinks in the course, but the experience was pretty smooth overall. Very clear with what his expectations are regarding tests/assignments. No textbook--all the readings are online (awesome). Essay-esque assignments are also very short and straightforward. Highly recommended!
Really nice guy, lectures are a bit dry but go to them as he gives hints about questions on the final ESPECIALLY the last lectures.
excellent choice for prof. Cares about his students, although his lectures are boring, tutorials aren't really helpful but easy participation marks. Gives pop quizzes, but are open book. Mid term test was fairly easy if you paid attention in class, not that heavy on the homework side of things, but not a last minute to do kind of paper.
One of the best POL profs at SFU. Very passionate and approachable. Marking was fair.
He's a really great prof- I recommend taking a class with him. The key to success is going to class- lots of pop quizzes but you'll get 100% as long as you're there to write them.
Not a great prof. He does not tell you what's going to be on the midterm and exam so you pretty much have to read your textbook and memorize the whole thing to get a good mark. This class is not a GPA booster.
It's a pretty basic intro class, lectures can be interesting, but sometimes dry. He lays out the requirements well, which are straightforward and easy if you study.
ok i seriously don't know why people are saying his class is a gpa booster/easy mark class when it's clearly not. this is not a basic intro class so good luck if you have zero knowledge in politics. he'll say the midterm is "basic" when it isn't.
Interesting class on immigration issues. No textbook, which is nice (and free!). Recommended.
Took the class as a GPA booster. Lectures and reading can be dry, but the issue I found with him is that his midterm was very vague from the lectures - if you didn't memorize the textbook, you won't pass the class. Also, tutorials were a waste of time, as the course material wasn't talked about AT ALL and was not testable.10/10 would not take again
Eh, class is definitely not a GPA booster. Readings and lecture are very boring, however professor Jeram tries his best to make lectures interesting. Midterm was hard and tutorials were useless, so get ready to memorize the hell out of a boring ass book.. If you have an interest for politics, go ahead and take the class, otherwise don't bother.
Not sure what these others are talking about, I'm not a political science person and didn't find it hard to get an A. Pay attention to the lectures, use the study guide and you'll be fine. If you want a GPA booster where you can skip class and do well, not this class.
Third class I've take with Jeram, so obviously I think he's a solid prof. Immigration is definitely his passion, so this class is more interesting than his others. I feel like his upper-level courses are easier than his lower-level ones.
I took a lower level course with him and it was pretty easy, but this one was way harder. He has very clear grading criteria and gives you long/short answer Qs in advance, but he gives the hardest multiple choice I've ever had (wording is really confusing). He's a good prof and makes you work, but watch out for the wording in his MC.
He seems like a nice professor and all, but his exams were pretty difficult. The lectures are pretty useless and vague, so be prepared to read and memorize the textbook. I wouldn't recommend this course as a GPA booster because it isn't one.
Just saw that I finished with A, a nice surprise. Good professor, makes you work but clear grading criteria.
Pretty easy intro class. Tutorials feel like a waste of time but easy to get 10/10.
This guy is the best in the department. Do the work and you'll get a nice mark.
Sanjey is really helpful and generous with the marks.
Sanjey jeram knows how to teach and is not biased in politics. He is the fairest marker in the department. Some teachers are jealous of him.
Sanjey is really nice and fair with the grades. He lectures with quality and everyone loves him. He is also young and handsome.
Absolutely amazing prof. He explains key concepts in a very thorough manner and has no problem giving you extra help outside of class time. The course is structured in a very reasonable way and he understands the stresses of being a student in university. He values our input and is a great guy all around.
I took this class as a filler course knowing it wasn't going to be a gpa booster. The exams were hard imo, especially the written portion. But the paper made up for my mark. Lectures were dry and boring but theres pop quizzes in lecture. You basically read the textbook but Sanjay is easily reachable.
Great prof, really helpful and understanding when you go see him. His lectures are decent. Pretty basic stuff but he's a good clear speaker. Exams are tricky unless you know your stuff well. Go to him for help, not the TAs.
He talks WAAAAAAAAAAY too much in lecture. Lecture also gets very boring because he is NON STOP TALKING and TALKING and TALKING. Everyone around me and everywhere basically skip class because it gets super boring. TA's also never return emails and are very boring to attend too as well.
He was an awesome/fair prof. He did talk too much and made no sense at times. I went to class only twice. HOWEVER, if you take his midterm you'll know what type of questions he'll ask for the final. I studied his notes on my own and made sure to pay attention to the smaller details! I got an 85 on the final, however, others found his final tough!
Took this course but not in pol sci. The course requirements are straightforward and not hard to get an A if you study.
Sanjay is one of the nicest guys @SFU. Super knowledgeable and kind, clear in his lectures and test content, surprise quizzes but eliminates ur worst one. He answers questions in lecture in great detail and even structures tutorials for the TAs so we are all at the same place in the course and our understanding is relatively consistent.
The way this class is taught is not at a 100 level. It is expected for you to already know terms and politics, terms are not explained but just given examples of how they are used and if you don't know the subject to begin with you will not understand what is going on. The tutorials are unhelpful, and not based off lectures. Exam questions are hard
Just finished this course, I think I did well enough on the final. Prof Jeram did a really good job moving the course online, you have to give him props for that!
He's very clearly engaged in lectures and shows he wants students to succeed. But, his lectures/slides had lots of unnecessarily complex wording to explain simple concepts which made it difficult to keep up. I can never really understand what he's trying to say either. Barely used my textbook and still got a good grade.
I had a tough time with this course but came in with zero political knowledge. Prof Jeram is the only prof I had for a big class who will take the time to really help when you ask. I'd take another course with him for sure.
Sanjay is a nice guy but the vocabulary he uses is way too advanced. He uses words you have to look up in the dictionary when doing his lectures. Other than that the class is extremely easy, especially if you know a little about politics.
Organized course easy to get a good grade.
This is an easy elective to take. Provided you pay attention in class and attend tutorial it will be an easy GPA boost.
Pretty easy social sci elective, the concepts can be a lot but as long as you review the lecture slides before the midterm and final, you'll do fine. The TA can make or break the class because discussions in tutorials are pretty formal and structured (at least in my tutorial it was). Overall, not too much work required in this class.
Really nice guy - he tries really hard to reach students and get them to participate. The TA's are pretty great as well, the tutorial material is also structured by the professors so no boring/irrelevant activities. Be careful with the pop quizzes because they add up, but the midterm was really easy. The writing assignments are a bit boring.
Good prof, although I felt his lectures were difficult to understand due to his complex vocabulary. Quizzes every couple of weeks, but he lets you collaborate with others (might just be for online though). The midterm was difficult but I ended up getting an A so it might've been stress. Just study both the textbook and lectures and you'll be fine!
I cannot, within 350 characters, express how grateful I am for Dr. Jeram's care. Long story short, 2020 has been extra rough for myself and through all that a glimmer of hope fell from the sky. With 5 courses, run-ins with COVID, and trips to the hospital my guy Dr. Jeram has been nothing but understanding through everything I have been through.
Honestly one of my favourite profs and would 100% take a class with him again. Lots of textbook reading plus extra readings for tutorial. The quizzes were very easy. Theres one big paper, but that was also very simple. Overall if you like politics and want to have a base understanding of it take this class!
Wow! My expectations for Sanjay's class were pretty high after reading these comments and I have to say, he totally lived up to it. He was super understanding when I had a COVID scare which was a highlight for me, you can tell he really cares about his students. Can't wait to take another class with him!
Dr. Jeram provides amazing lectures that are both informative and engaging. His quizzes and his mid terms were fair. We were also given lots of time for a paper which allowed us to request help from either Dr. Jeram or our TA's. I'm not interested in Political Science but Dr. Jeram enabled me to learn and understand the world of politics.
A great class taught by an amazing prof! Dr. Jeram's lectures were so engaging as he translated ideologies into real world examples. The content was very interesting but it is a lot of reading and the lectures are pretty long, so just don't get caught behind. He cares about his students and is easy to reach out to. My favourite course this sem!
Solid prof! Engaging and straight forward lectures and super fair assignments.
Great prof. A challenging course with lots of writing but fairly clear grading criteria. Readings are important, as assignments are based on them. Tutorials were a bit discordant as material was not quite as linked to the assignments and productive as one would hope for. All elements of criteria must be implemented into work, but small word limits
Amazing professor! Class is structured well, very organized and clear. He was totally understanding when I had a family emergency during the semester. Hope to take a class with him in person after COVID!
If lectures matter to you, dont take this class from Sanjay. I have never seen someone speak in such an unclear and disorganized manner. His lectures are long and (most importantly) do not make much sense. No cohesion whatsoever. Good luck on trying to figure out what his main point is. By halfway through, I was only reading the textbook. Avoid!
I don't like online courses but Prof Jeram has made things really easy and clear for students. I'm not a political person but still an interesting course.
Lectures were confusing at times, because of his vocabulary, but not confusing enough to take away from meaning. Participation in tutorials is crucial to success. Kill the paper and the midterm and you'll be in a fine position for the final. Final is time consuming but not terribly difficult. A good course, even for non-POL majors.
Tutorials are useless (except for participation marks). My TA did not lay out the term paper criteria properly. Cost me an A+. It's a hard course if you don't know politics. If you work hard with 0 background in politics it's still easy to get a B+
Sanjay has the clearest grading criteria and expectations. POL200W is tough because of the content but not because of the prof. Sanjay wants his students to succeed and it shows.
Class is quite basic, just a bunch of topics in detail. Keep up with the weekly readings, look over the lectures, study a but before the midterm and final and you should have understanding of 90%+ the material. Just one paper, not very hard.
Great professor, had him for both pol 200w and pol 100 and his office hours are very helpful
Sanjay was one of the best prof's I have had at SFU. He knew exactly what he was talking about and didn't overcomplicate things. With the help of his TA's I was able to understand the course on a deeper level. I definitely recommend taking any of his classes if you have the opportunity.
Sanjay is one of, if not the best profs I've had in my uni career. He is respected and understands the material that he teaches inside and out. His course is easy to pass if you show up for lectures and pay some attention to it. Because of Sanjay I am switching my major to Political Science. Attendance is mandatory in TUT for participation.
midterms and finals were very unfair, doesnt seem to care about the students. offered .5 credit if you showed up to lecture
Sanjay is a super chill guy. Lectures are delivered in an engaging manner and I can tell he really cares for his students. He can be stern with rules but always extremely fair and responds to emails promptly. POL100 covers very basic subject matter and if you put in the effort in tutorial, it is no problem to get a high grade in Sanjay's class.
He's super nice and understanding and cares. Just show up to class and pay attention and you'll do fine its fairly easy.
Overall Sanjay was a good lecturer. His lectures were easy to follow especially as a first year student. I had no background knowledge on politics but I still managed to do well. I feel like the midterm was unfair as it was extremely hard.
Great prof but he goes over a lot of topics very fast and does not include them in his slides. The tests are equally based on textbook and lectures. I got an A- but I had to put in a good amount of work for it.
Overall a great professor, easily one of the top 3 I've had in 3 years. I took this course in my third year and found it pretty straightforward. Prof Jeram is very balanced and uses research to help you understand politics. I still have no idea what his actual opinions are.
Sanjay was an amazing professor and had a straight-forward class. I took this class during the semester when the TA strike took place, so the course was adjusted (no term paper). However, mid-term was quite straight forward with no trick questions and the final exam was fairly easy. Quizzes are posted randomly so stay up to date!
He goes on and on in lectures and half of it is just repetition of what he had already stated. The midterm was horrible (50% MC and 50% written) , questions on the smallest details that were only said once. His slides are basically useless, there's barely anything on it. Tutorials were helpful but the TA's were hard markers.
the midterm was 40% and the average was like a low-mid C. overall hes a nice person but the class did not eat!!
LITERALY AN L CLASS DO NOT TAKE WARNING!!!! THE CLASS WAS NOT IT!!! IF YOU WNNA FAIL ONLY THEN TAKE IT
took this class as a requirement his exam was so hard I legit failed he does not care bout his students lectures r super bland
He's pretty passionate about what he teaches, his lectures are interesting in my opinion and he is often available to help you if you ask through email. Although I feel like you have to put quite a bit of effort to do well if you don't know much about political science (at least for me).
whatever good things people have said about this prof must either be outdated or completely false. lectures are very surface-level and don't prepare you at all for the midterm. if you want to do well then you'd better memorize the required texts word per word and know more about concepts than both the prof and ta combined.
It is a requirement and not the easiest course but Professor Jeram makes it manageable.
I had taken a POL class already so found this pretty easy. Prof Jeram is was recommended by friends and lived up to what they said. He gets passionate about some topics.
Dry material but it is methods. Prof Jeram knows his stuff and it gets easier as the course goes along. Take in the summer if you can (smaller class).
Overall great prof, had him for 200W and he made the class a lot better than expected, especially for a qualitative research class. Offers 1.5% bonus and if you pay attention and do readings it is quite easy to do well in the course. Very knowledgeable and respectable. Would definitely take another class with Sanjay.
Sanjay himself is NOT THE ISSUE. This is 100 lvl poli course, which should not be difficult! That is what I thought, then was hit with a 50 on my paper, marked against stuff not on the criteria. The T.A's can and will sink your mark. The exams r pretty easy + scales if everyone does bad.
The professor's teaching style often made the material harder to grasp than it needed to be. Exams, in particular, were challenging—not because of the content itself but due to poorly worded and confusing questions. It was often difficult to understand what was being asked, which created unnecessary stress during assessments.
As someone who had basically no background knowledge of politics, I thought I wouldn't do good in POL 100. Sanjay is an amazing professor, but I had to focus really hard on what he was saying because he talked pretty fast. Caley is such a great TA. If you put in the work, you'll do fine.
The "uh, um, sorry I mean" during lecture was distracting. Explanations on lecture material were not super clear. I felt like I had to teach myself the material. Exams were harder than they needed to be. I found the papers for the critical review overly difficult to comprehend, especially with no background in the field. TA was a tough grader.
Sanjay was my first intro to any pol courses and as someone with close to no political background his lectures werent the easiest to follow. he spoke way too fast and often said things that made no sense. if u put in the work on ur own you will do fine. dont rely on textbook, use the tut readings and lec slides which are clear and posted weekly.
I found the course pretty easy. Most people I spoke to got As or A-s in the course.
I had Sanjay for both POL100 and 200W. He is very nice and approachable. His lectures are a bit boring and instructions for assignments are a bit confusing and needed clarification, however TA's are quick to respond to any questions and provide good feedback. Textbook not needed for either, just review lecture slides and you will be good!
Not an easy class but Professor Jeram does well to make it tolerable. I liked how the assignments kept me paying attention rather than a big final exam. He is friendly and helpful outside of class time.
I honestly thought I was doing so much worse in this class but ended with a high grade- multiple opportunities to receive bonus marks ultimately bring your grade up. Beware though, this course is dry and intimidating but I promise it's not that bad. Participation in tutorials is key and attend lectures bc his slides are kinda bare and need context
Sanjay was super passionate and intelligent. The midterm and the final were easy if you were prepared, but the assignment was confusing. Exams are entirely based on the lectures, so I didn't bother reading the textbook after the midterm. However, he talks quickly and uses complicated political terminology for an intro course. Tutorials were fun.
Good professor all around. Easy to understand, approachable, pretty nice. The one assignment we did have was a little hard to understand the criteria but the tests' criteria was relatively understandable. The textbook readings are not essential or mandatory but you do need to do the readings for the tutorial as there will be questions asked.
though i thought the lectures were slightly useless, sanjay is such a down-to-earth prof. the midterm and final were fairly easy, but the paper was not. the criteria was not clear, and TAs would take points off for miniscule things (i got 0.25 off for some random thing). overall, the course is easy, just depends on your TA
Sanjay was a great professor with engaging lectures. I am not interested in politics, I took this course as a requirement and he made the content so interesting that I was actually excited to go to class. My TA was excellent, she provided great clarification on any confusing topics and made tutorials fun.
Sanjay was a very chill guy, very approachable. For the class, it says recommended to take POL100 as a pre-req or co-req and I highly rec that as well, you will need a basic understanding on politics to comprehend aspects of lectures. Quite a few necessary readings to do, but idk i did ok without half of them, def do them tho it helps a lot.
Monotone and boring during lectures. He does communicate a lot, specially before assignments and tests through canvas. He curves up the grades for tests. Getting an A is easier than other classes as his conversion from percentage to letter grade is lower than other courses. He extends deadlines a lot. TA is the make it or break it kinda thing.
Sanjay is a great prof, he's modern, understanding, and actually has a soul. 200W is a fairly difficult course conceptually but Sanjay provides all the necessary reading so students don't pay. He was very understanding with tight deadlines and rescheduled assignments for the whole class. His lecture slides gave plenty of information to succeed.
