Very unclear of expectations
Horrible instructor! The worst teacher I have ever taken. Very unclear about his expectations and will talk you to sleep! Do not recommend this instructor to anyone!
The most intelligent person I have ever met in my life. Will go out of his way to help you. If you don't understand his expectations, ASK!! He's more than happy to talk to his students and help them in any way possible. Highly recommended.

This is kinda audacious, but honestly, he'd be a great, and i mean a really great community college instructor, if he was just a bit more aggressive and assertive. A perfect example of a good, yet very risky, instructor. You'll definitely learn, not because of the work load or anything, but because of his "enlightened" humanities approach;risky tho
Possibly the most difficult class I've ever taken, and I got an A! Willing to help if you have trouble, but teaches like its a Ph.D-level class. Dude, its just ENGL101, we all have to take it. None of us will be professional authors! That said, the research we had to do on great thinkers has been invaluable.
Do not take this instructor! He is very mean.
Best English teacher on campus!!! he is very open to new ideas and opinions on the essays and is very clear on what he wants. we went on a trip to the getty museum to compare literature with art for our midterm and that was awesome. great class makes you or rather allows you to think about anything on the text of what you're reading
Mr. Tafarella is a really good teacher but his class is not easy. there are 5 essays total and one happens to be an in class essay...so be expected to work alot in and out of class. just make sure you stay on top of your work or you'll fall behind. but just remember he is always willing to give a helping hand.
Awesome professor!!!! very helpful!!! he actually helps you to think critically, open-mind to opinions and comments, enthusiast towards the subject, and is a fun class. i highly recommend him. there are not many readings to do compare to other english class, the main basis is to analyze what you read. He allows you to write on whatever you believe
I thought that he was a very helpful and good intsructor. I recommend all my friends to take his class!
Great teacher. He'll help you if you need some help. He'd helped me with my grammar issue and my essays. I highly recommended to get him as your English teacher.
This professor is self absorbed and says hurtful things to his students. He should respect people even if they are new at the college experience.
Extremely vague in his expectations and leaves incredibly ambiguous notes on papers he expects revised. I turned in a paper he graded as a C, turned it back in 2 days later with NO revisions and he gave it an A? Doubtful he even reads your work. Total hit or miss w/ this guy. His teaching style is also the worst combination of arrogant and boring.
He's very helpful!!! Wonderful teacher!! I enjoyed his class very much. 3 papers (i think) 1 midterm (take-home), 1 final (take home) totally wonderful!! I would have done so much better if i didn't procrastinate. Also all essays are due at the end of the semester :)
Professor Taferelli is a wonderful teacher. He is so helpful and he knows so much you won't believe it. I definately recommend him for any English class. He's the real thing!!!
He is not helpful, and keeps saying he is sorry. I just can't stand his personality. Very irritating.
this professor is very helpful if you listen and do all you 3 essays you will pass he's cool and will help you a lot.
I took him for my first semester.HE IS A WONDERFUL TEACHER.I passed,he helped me in every essay,he was always nice, very helpful. If he would give 99 i would SO take him again. He is my favorite hes so nice If you want to pass take him hes the BEST,i mean it.I'm so glad I took him,i learned alot.Take him he's very nice,he is always willing to help you
I took him last semester for eng 97 and he his a really good teacher. If you need help on your papers he will help you. 1st I though he was not a good teacher but at the end of the semester he really help on those papers. In the conference he take time to check all ur essays not like other teachers. It would be good if he teach eng 99.
At first he scared me with what he expected but, after a while I loved the class. Yes, he was hard but I have not received anything less than an A on any paper I have written since I took the class. If you want to learn he is the one!
You can immediately tell that Professor Taf is passionate about English. He really goes deep into stories. He's a lenient grader; I've only gotten A's. All that, and he's one of the nicest people I've met.
I think he is a wonderful teacher; His class is not hard if you stay on top of reading and dont procrastinate on essays. He is very helpful and leaves the topics of essays open, which makes them easier to write. 10 typed journals based off the reading. 3 essays. Quizzes on the reading. 2 bluebooks and an MLA exit exam make up the class. He is great.
Awesome!!! It's so fun to be around such a passionate teacher. If you want to learn about English and much more take his class. I was interested and excited the whole time.
Mr. Tafarella is a good teacher. At first I was overwhelmed with the style he wants the essays in, but he just wants to teach u well. Ive always hated english, but i got an A with him. It wasnt too hard. His lectures can be a little boring, but it was overall a good class & a great teacher :)
I love this guy. He is so smart I can't believe it. I'll be frank and say he is really into English, but he focuses more on critical thinking than literature. Now to be fair, he does love classic literature, especially Greek mythology. Also if you're somewhat of a film fan, try talking movies with him. He recommends really good ones.
Did not like him. Make sure to agree with him in all your work. If dont he will give you a bad grade. Also he has wierd ideas on how to write papers like using "I".
Best eng teacher in the campus. i took eng 101 with him in 8 week course it was challending doing the essays but the class is so easy. At the end I got a B. The final was so easy is about MLA format. The class is kind of boring but and easy A or B to get in that class. He is the best for english classes.
He wants his students to be as passionately interested in English as he is, which can get a little annoying sometimes. However, he does care about every individual student's success. There are only three essays during the whole semester so it isn't that bad at all. Easssyyyy A!
Took the 8 week course, a lot to cram into 8 weeks but he is a very nice teacher and gives good chances to revise your papers. HUGE interest in aliens and the "unknown" so if you like that type of stuff, this is your English teacher! Got an A in the class...pretty easy grading.
I absolutely ADORE him!! He is the best teacher I have ever had! You need to pay attention in class and attend of course but he just makes class so amazing. I wish I can take him for English 102, he is so amazing. I LOVE him!!! Such a wonderful teacher.
Can't stand him! He made assignments based on "field trips" and the alternate assignments still required you to go somewhere. For someone working full time and taking 19 units thats impossible. His "lectures" had nothing to do with the assignments. He just really likes to hear himself talk.
Wish I had him again for 102 because the field trips were my favorite part! He is very passionate about his job so he expects to see you equally as passionate about something and it does not have to be English. For some strange reason he reminds me of the Dude...must be his jacket.
A true scholar. I am not passionate about English (World Literature in this case), but he is, and that rubs off on his students. Don't expect to skate by- he has high standards and the amount of work involved is somewhat substantial. This being for English 230 however, and I don't believe the course is even being offered this coming semester.
Make no mistake, this is a true Teacher, an artiste of the craft. Educated, theatrical, whimsical, critical, and a genuine lover of Knowledge, Mr. Tarafella sees the beauty in learning and critical thinking. At at his core, his goal is always to educate and provoke thought, and that alone makes him a cut above the rest.
Amazing pro and this is coming from someone that did not like English his way of teaching is great he helps you with any thing that you don't understand i took his 8 week take my word for it you will learn a lot in his class best English professor you will not regret taking his class :)
GREAT PROFESSOR! very understanding and accomidating and hes passsionate about his work. He is very artsy and hippie like. He accepts late work because he understands students can be very busy with work, kids, and other classes etc. Very small and fairly easy workload. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND TAKING HIS CLASSES!
AMAZING teacher! Hes truely the best teacher in avc. He does an excellent job in teaching and getting what needs to be done correctly. Very understanding which is convinent cause he lets you turn in stuff late. Yes there is work constantly but very easy.3 essays in total got A's on all. Highly reccomend him. Easy A and you'll learn alot
Prof Tafarella is amazing! There should be more teachers and people in general like him. He is so passionate about what he teachers and he is just great. I loved his enthusiasm. I do wish I had more time on my hands when I took his class because I would have really enjoyed reading and more involved.
Great teacher! Hands down one of the best ive had at avc. Very influential. Made me love english once again.
BE PREPARED FOR A LOT OF WRITING.. HE GRADES HARSH ON ESSAYS.YOU HAVE TO BE ON TOP OF EVERYTHING, SO BE PREPARED!
Professor's passion radiates creating a positive influential, motivation. No desire to take the course but enjoying as course develops. Strongly recommend; word of advice: be prepared to read and learn.
Best English teacher out there. Hands down. Must take him if not you're definitely missing out. Keeps you engaged and really opens your eyes to the world around you. Also makes writing and literature interesting. Love it wish he taught other classes!
He is a very passionate english professor! Opens your eyes to literature, by far the best english professor! Of course you have to read and write a lot but as long as youre on top of your stuff then for sure you will pass.
He is very passionate, but his teachings won't correspond to your other English classes. Everything you were taught not to do in papers, he tells you to do them. So not the most ideal if you want to grow in your essays. Essays are 10 pages long, but if you just write anything you'll get an A pretty much.
Took the 8 week class and had to spend two nights a week for three hours with him, rather boring. Overall he was a nice teacher but was rather slow and would take a while to get to the point.
If you are a strong writer and feel comfortable with writing 10 page essays this class is easy. If you struggle with writing and reading DO NOT take the 8 week course, you will get overwhelmed.
He wants you to pass and if you go and ask for help he will give you opportunities to raise your grade. Prof Tafarella is a really cool professor that is chill and mellow. I took the eight week course and the essays weren't too bad.
If you don't like freethinking (or rather critical thinking) you won't like him. He's a rather interesting professor. He assigns fairly long papers but really emphasizes on reading. He checks thoroughly for markings in your book or sticky notes. He offers an assignment if you can't go to a museum and is pretty fair as well as lenient.
I absolutely love having Professor Tafarella! He is extremely thorough and really helpful when you get stuck or just have questions. He is very interesting and I never got bored. The essays can be lengthy, but with all the tools he teaches you, you should be able to achieve what he is asking. Very nice guy, I would take him again. I learned SO MUCH
Just like the first time I took him, he's completely fair with his policies and expectations. Sure he has long lectures and or discussions, but they're actually worth attending if you're in college to learn. His "Intellectual Tools" are phrases or words people actually use in an educated environment. Do not take him if you expect an easy A.
Professor Tafarella is flat-out, hands-down AMAZING!!!!! I LOVE his class! As someone who loves literature, his reading material selection is excellent, he is so freaking awesome, he's brilliant, and to top it off, he is the absolute nicest guy! I literally can't recommend him enough. Just completely awesome, and so accommodating/understanding too.
professor Tafarella was definitely my favorite english teacher ive ever had! Hes very passionate at what he does. i learned so many useful information and tools during his class. If you are someone that really wants to Excel in english and wants to become a better writer, take him!!!
Tafarella is a great professor. I barely showed up to class, just did the work, and I got an A. He is super chill and allowed my friend to turn in essays after the semester ended. He is sort of a hippie, but he's super chill. Understands if you might have a lot going on.
This professor is absolutely amazing, both as a person and a professor. The class is so lenient and the essays are thought provoking. This class has become my favorite and I plan on taking him for the next class. He is by far become my favorite teacher!
PROFESSOR TAFARELLA IS CARING AND WILL HELP YOU TILL THE LAST DAY OF THE SEMESTER, ITS THREE ESSAYS ,2 GREENBOOKS , AND 2 NOTEBOOK CHECKS HE HELPS BEFORE YOUR SUBMIT YOUR PAPER AND GIVES YOU A BALLPARK OF WHAT KIND OF GRADE IT IS , SOMETIME TALKS TO MUCH BUT HES AWARE OF IT
The Getty Museum trip was essentially the only interesting thing about his class. He talks in tangents alot and is very forgetful. You will have to make sure to be on top if everything but he is pretty reasonable. The only bad thing is that he doesn't respond to emails or at least he didn't at the beginning. Easy class but annoying professor
This is a solid pick for a professor, each extra credit assignment is an extra 10 points to your lowest assignment. There are only 3 written essays and 2 green books but they are all easy and the requirements are not long at all the most you should write is 4 pages. I personally thought the class was interesting but can be tedious.
Dont take his class. Extremely boring, gets off topic. Talks more about science then English. Absolutely dreaded going every M/W wish he knew how to teach in a fun intriguing way. He doesnt talk with the class just talks at us.
Professor Tafarella is an interesting teacher in my opinion. I took him on Fridays, we only had 2 essays & 2 green books, one of the green books was done at home. This class is super easy, he does talk a lot but its obvious he has a lot of knowledge to share. I really enjoyed his class, very laid back & you just cruise along as he puts it.
He is very understanding. There are many little pieces of homework that He has a minimum word count for. Usually between 300 and 600 words. If you dont make the deadline, he will let you turn in work late for full credit. He doesnt post all the work online so you HAVE to go to class or know someone in class to get the homework. Lets you revise.
This is my favorite English professor, he makes class fun and he does give out reading assignments and a few essays. If you dont like reading a lot then hes not the teacher for you, but the reading he gives helps out with your writing! Very easy and is straight forward in what he expects, show up and do the work its a guaranteed pass.
I took Professor Tafarella for English 101, and was amazing! I was pretty bad at writing papers, but after taking him I felt more confident. Take him if you want an easy A and you'll learn a lot as well.
He really made English 101 enjoyable! You will read mostly from one book that will really dig into your critical thinking skills. This class is based on responses based on your opinion from either videos or the assigned book. He really opens your mind in this class. This class will be an easy A if you follow what he says.
Perfect English teacher. Makes you write essays instead of tests and it is enjoyable if you like reading and learning in general. The best English teacher ever.
Easy class, as long as you do the work. He provides feedback for all your papers. You do have to purchase a book, but I found it online for free and another book off of amazon, which I bought used for $3. The class is a breeze 10/10 would recommend.
Professor Tafarella is not only one of the kindest professors I have had but he is also one of the most passionate about his subject. He really cares for each student and understands that we may have a lot going on with other classes or just life in general, so he is pretty reasonable with how much work he gives. 10/10 would recommend him!
Okay so hes not a bad teacher but I will say there is something I want to bring up Im a veteran and to laugh and bring up PTSD as something of a laughing matter to him and of course I spoke up but I was personally attacked by a student for standing up for that I dont believe its a laughing matter Veterans and myself struggle with it
Professor Tafarella is an amazing professor! He is a very clear communicator when it came to any assignment, he made sure we had an abundant amount of knowledge and resources for each assignment we had (even worksheets to look at if we got stuck on essays) . Very caring for his students and wants you to succeed 10/10 would take again!
I took Professor Tafarella's English 102 class and I have to say he was great. His lectures were always engaging. He assigns reading short stories, poems, etc often but it isn't much. Not many assignments either. He allowed for work to be resubmitted for a higher grade and accepted late work. He's very nice and understanding. Would recommend 100%.
Prof. Tafarella is a really nice and considerate person. He knows that we as students often have a lot on our plate and is always very understanding. He assigns essay instead of tests and plays many supplementary videos in class. It is clear that he loves his profession through his lectures. I really enjoyed this class!
He's a really good professor on teaching the subject, will make sure the class is engaged and he makes it fun. His teaching style is very mellow and laidback, I didn't really mind but for those who require an upbeat teaching style, I wouldn't recommend it. Always makes sure that students get the best opportunity to pass his class. Take him!
Prof. Tafarella is the embodiment of a bookworm and a humble one at that. He enjoys what he does and it is shown when he teaches!
I took English 230 as an Honors class and loved it. We had to write a few long papers and a few class discussions. Very manageable and the stories were enjoyable. Participation was not required but encouraged. If he has an honors English 231 class I will definitely take him again.
He was a great professor. We had two papers with 6-7 pages. We had a few 300-word discussions. He doesn't force you to speak. He was good at explaining things about world literature. He does talk a lot, but his lectures are fascinating.
Honest to GOD one of my favorite professors I took this semester, maybe my favorite of all time. Tafarella is the definition of accommodating and a great standard other professors at AVC should follow. I highly recommend him, the homework is simple and he explains it thoroughly so there is never miscommunication.
Tafarella was one of my first professors at AVC and he was amazing! He always wanted his student's input on things and wanted to make sure that they were comfortable. When it came down to accommodating students he did everything he could. Definitely would take any of his classes again!
I transferred to uni this year but Professor Tafarella remains as one of my favorite teachers ever. The material was interesting and engaging; we watched a few films and videos to help us understand core concepts. He's unintentionally funny. Doesn't force participation but encourages. If you're able to take a class with him, please do!
Very nice professor. Not too much work, and he does a good job explaining the assignments. Easy A if you put in the work. I definitely recommend him.
Amazing. Tafarella is truly a gem. He cares for his students, has amazing lectures, on top of grading, and isn't lecture heavy. He gives us many resources and feedback on our work. The assignments are very easy and so fun to do. I was always excited to attend class each morning. He is very passionate about English. Inspirational.
Class was pretty easy. Not a lot of work, but have a new paper due almost every week. Instructions are always clear. Easy A as long as you put some effort.
Professor Tafarella is a wonderful guy. I took his class while still in high school and I would love to take his class again. He's very nice and very understanding. The class itself is very easy as long as you do the assignments. You will need the textbooks fyi. 10 out of 10 recommend.
Professor Tafarella was amazing. I have had him twice and he was great in both classes. He is always willing to help and is very understanding. We have two papers and just mini work in between. We do lots of discussions on Canva which are a big part of the grading. Overall would take his class again. He loves what he is teaching.
Mr. Tafarella is a wonderful instructor who genuinely cares about interacting with his students and being available to them. The papers are easy and he is an interesting person. Definitely would recommend.
BEST TEACHER!!! If you need a stress-free class, this is it! Easy grader, only need really need to read one book he tells you to read (but i never read it and still got A's on my essay for it). It rarely gives homework and gives you so many weeks to do a small assignment. Very understanding. Easy A. If you need to take English 101 take him.
He's a chill teacher, the class is easy as long as you don't fall behind on work. I never missed any assignments, but he seemed to accept late work. He gets philosophical, so his lectures are boring sometimes. My only issue is that it's hard to get full credit on assignments, he was always taking away 5-10 points instead of giving the full credit.
Professor Tafarella is the best teacher I had this semester! He's a funny professor and really cares about his students. He also gives the class plenty of time to complete assignments that are not difficult at all. He only assigns two essays which are pretty easy. Take Professor Tafarella if you want the best English 101 class.
Professor Tafarella is such a great teacher. His classwork was incredibly easy, and he even took off an assignment at the end of the semester. There are only two big essays, and you have a lot of freedom with them so they're really easy to get through. Genuinely cares about his students and helps you to become more academic and knowledgeable.
Tafarella is an amazing teacher. Don't fall behind (like I did), he is understanding with late work tho. His essay prompts encourage you to think deeper and know how to back your opinions, I enjoyed the essays a lot. English isn't my favorite subject but the professor is very passionate about what he teaches, making it enjoyable. Great class.
Prof. Tafarella is inspiring and kind, he's not only helpful but also extremely generous. This was my first year of AVC and he made it wonderful. He's a tough grader but he will never let you have a bad grade on something, he always offers help to get a higher grade on assignments you didn't do well on. For textbooks, you can find them all ONLINE!
He's a kind and helpful professor. His lectures and choice of readings are interesting. Only 2 papers and a few discussion posts where he encourages you to write what interests you. I enjoyed coming to class, not all stressful. I would take him if you want an easy-going prof, class, and you're a self-learner so that you can advantage of papers.
Such a kind and caring teacher. Really loves teaching and loves English. Right forward assessments and is always willing to explain and help you if you need it. Breaks up essay papers in sections which is good for people like me who tend to procrastinate. You have to read 2 books and turn in a few assignments. Overall great class. Take him!
Professor Tafarella is a wonderful instructor who makes this English class enjoyable. The workload is manageable, and he gives plenty of time for assignments. unstuck ai was a great study tool alongside the textbook. Definitely take this class if you can!
I took this professor since fall of 2022, and he was a great and inspiring professor. He inspires students to think critically when reading a novel or writing essays. He is very sweet, kind and caring to students. I would definitely take this professor again. This professor is definitely recommended!
