i took mr. longoria for freshman comp 2. He is a nice person and has good intentions but the class is not so easy. In class you debate....alot about subjects that dont accomplish anything. he is a hard grader but will cut some slack at the beginning. you write ALOT of inclass papers and essays be prepared. you also read and he give reading quizzes
Good guy! Read and contribute to discussions or else...expect quizzes! He gave a few pop quizzes to check if we were doing our readings but they were only 2-5 questions and really simple! U work in groups for class assignments and go over them after. Grades essays reasonably as long as you write a decent paper and follow directions! I have an A.
Nice Guy, alot of writing but it is a writing class, vary fair grader and gives advice, very organized class, read the assignments b/c quizzes will be given but only count as 5% as the final grade, young guy who has a sense of humor, overall good class
really cool guy, good sense of humor but lots of writing. excellent teacher, really helpful if you want to become a better writer. strict on attendence but if u like to write its a really good course
If you're not a good writer don't take him he grades really hard on papers. A lot of essays. He's a good guy though, just really tough
There is not really a whole lot a teacher can do to make this class bearable... He is a great guy, but makes you write A LOT! Fair grader too. The quizes are annoying, but the class itself is good.
STAY AWAY!!! There are readings every night and a quiz EVERY day over what you read the night before. TONS of papers to write and he is definitely a hard grader along with being totally anal about formatting. He takes off tons of points for minor errors. He is an ok guy but DO NOT take him for this class. I used to ENJOY writing, but not anymore!!
Make sure you read the readings, if you do you will get a good grade, i didnt read, and he is a really nice young guy who understands college students, helpful, grades a little tough but gives good advice to help future grades
He makes you do a lot of in class work, not to mention the essays. He is a very difficult professor and not that fair. He is the reason i hate writing! I think he is a know it all kind of guy and i would not recommend him as a professor. He limits you on lots of things in writing and he is picky with certain topics. I really hate this class!!!!
He is a touch grader, but at the same time fair. He knows what he wants from the students and thats how he grades. MUST read the assigned pages in the book.. there will always be a quiz on it! Good guy, young so he understands. Just go to class and ask questions if you don't get it. Otherwise your scores will be low!
very unclear when it comes to essays, helpful when it comes to MLA style
Not Very Helpful :( Makes you write A LOT! Choose another professor!
Mr. Longoria is tough grader and he requires alot of work. But if you try hard and ask him questions you'll do great. He's a young guy who knows what college students go through.
Very poor professor. He contradicts himself a lot and his instructions are very unclear. He has a pompous tone which really just shows he thinks he knows a lot more than he actually does. Got an A in freshman comp I and the teacher used my paper as an example for other students. In Longoria's comp II, I struggled to get a B.
Hes pretty hard, but usually makes the class interesting. Don't take if your looking to get an easy A. Take him if you wanna be a better writer. He grades easier if you talk to him about your essays.
Mr. Longoria is the best professor I've had at UTSA. He's always willing to help a student. He tries to make a pretty boring subject fun. You do write alot but as long as you talk in class you'll do fine.
Best teacher I have had at UTSA so far. He's hillarious and really interesting. Do not take if you want an easy A, but by the time you get out of his class you will know how to write an excellent paper. He grades tough, but he helps you learn from mistakes.
When i first entered the class i new he would be a tough professor. But he is worse than that. He is a pompous individual, while his teaching is ok, he is hardly clear with anything he gives us. Its basically a piece of paper in your face. And don't ask him to do anything because he never will, even though he tells you he will. Don't take him
REALLY HARD A. I worked so hard and all I can get is a B, which is actually pretty good according to him. Essays every week, wait, there was only one week that we didn't have an essay and we had a library research assignment. Don't need to get St Martin's Handbook b/c he'll give you the update. Will need Writing arguments and the small one.
Good professor, tough grader, will help you if you show him that you're trying. Following instructions is extremely important. Lots and lots of reading/writing. Very time consuming but very rewarding.
Very nice and approachable. Has great comments, and very helpuful constructive criticism. HARD grader, but it's a good class if you want to improve your writing skills.
HARD GRADER. But he is a good dude, and you can do much worse. I sadly had to cut my effort in this class, as I'd have rather gotten 5 A's and a C as opposed to 3 A's and 3 B's. Don't expect it to be easy, if your majoring in journalism, or want to write very proper good essays take him. All others need not apply
Great guy but very disorganized as a teacher. The dates on the syllabus are usually wrong and he will grade you everyday on topics not discussed in class or mentioned on the syllabus. His style is more focused on hurting your grade and hoping you'll figure out your mistakes without him helping you, regardless of how well you write. Avoid him.
He is a very hard grader. Books are mandatory, class is mandatory and there is lots of reading, quizes, homework and of course writing. This is not an easy class you will work your butt off in his class.Good Luck!
I loved him! He was really sweet and if you talk to him he's more open to helping you. He's young, interesting, and a really nice guy. He's definitely my favorite teacher at UTSA. If you are looking for an easy A this is not the class, but I didn't think it was THAT hard and i would really recommend to take him. he's awesome
If you are coming into his class thinking you are going to get an A, switch classes because its not going to happen. Be sure you know all the rules he has on the cheat sheet he gives. If you miss 8 days of class, you automatically fail. He speaks fast but understandable in my opinion. Good teacher, but a very hard grader.
Meh. Class is mandatory, and he will count you absent and takes points away from your final average if you do not attend. Very hard grader, almost impossible to get an A in that class. Makes you write tons of papers, about one a week. He's pretty boring too, I would advise anyone to try and get any other professor, because this one's no good.
IMPOSSIBLE to get an A in this class, maybe even a B. He is a very strict grader and will hurt your GPA. No doubt I tried my best in this class turning in ALL assignments on time, read all the readings, studied, had tutoring from the writing center and even extra credit and still i resulted with a D. Cool guy though. Attendance is mandatory.
Pretty cool teacher, he's young and interacts with students. Nice teacher, but impossible grader. I always made A's in english but i'm failing his class. He works with you if you put forth effort, yet i do not recommend his class unless you want your GPA to go down
Longoria is a very good professor, hes young and fast paced. However, his grading system is tough and gives many assignments. Overall he is a good professor and would definitely recommend him, be prepared to work in his class.
He is really cool. I really liked this class. Few pop quizzes and they weren't that bad. I really wasn't good at essay writing, and he really helped me understand. I recommend him.
He is difficult but an overall great professor. You meet individually with him after every rough draft and he is willing to work with you. He is however a very tough grader on essays.
Had him for 1013 and 1023, by far one of my favorite professors at UTSA. GREAT guy and willing to help While the grading system may SEEM difficult if you actually put time and effort into your papers you will do well. Not a class you can just breeze through, actually requires effort !
I loved this class and the teacher! He gives great notes that explain his requirements. There is only 1 long research paper. He grades mainly on grammar and structure. He is nice, funny and young. You should definitely take his class.
Boo on his rebuttal on this site he didnt teach it that way ha, take his class, very smart, down to earth, extremely helpful, can be a straight up hard ass if need be but he is awesome, taking his class right now, take this class, work hard, and you will not regret it.
Professor Longoria is a really great guy but his class is very hard. I thought I was a good writer until I came into his class. He is very helpful and available but he won't have sympathy for you if you don't try. It seems like we were writing one essay per week. So if that isn't for you, then choose another route.
Great professor, probably my favorite of the semester. Learned a lot from him, and became a better writer. Take this class!
Dont take this class if you care about your GPA. Extremely hard, somewhat enjoyable though if you enjoy hard work for low grades. I went to the writing center for all my papers and would still do bad. Plus he doesnt hand back the papers until you turn in the next paper so you cant correct what you did wrong until 2 papers after.
The professor himself is not a bad guy. He's funny & relatable, albeit the attitude he has towards the work is so nit-picky. He seems more focused on picking out what you've done wrong. It's unfortunate that a forced writing class would have a professor practically aiming for your failure. The highest you'll get is a C, guaranteed.
He is a great teacher! He is a hard grader but he is VERY clear with what he is looking for and writes comments all over the paper. You can only have 8 absences or he will fail you. He will use funny accents during class and make jokes to keep it interesting. My favorite teacher so far!
Professor Longoria gives clear expectations and lets you know when all the quizzes and papers will be. He does grade tougher than what I am used to but it only made me a better writer. Awesome teacher though...
He is one of my fav professors on campus, he made me a way better writer. You do have to work hard in his class but it's worth it!!!
He's very specific in what he wants, and as long as you do what he says/follow the outline he gives you in class you should do well. He's not one to hand out A's, but if you work hard enough he knows deserving students when he sees them.
Longoria is an exceptional professor. I will admit, he will not pick favorites or hand-out an 'A'. Instead, he greatly appreciates proactive students who go to his office hours. He will clearly answer almost all your questions, and will provide your work with commentary and suggestions for the next paper. Do not go in trying to "get by."
Mr. Longoria is a great person, i did not enjoy his teaching style, but i know a lot of my classmates did. I found this course difficult becasue of its fast paste and demanding schedule. He also grades extremly tough. He cares about writing its like his life i guess. I defininatly will not take the class again because i am now trying to fix my GPA.
Longoria definitely taught me how to become a better writer. I have always sucked at writing essays. But he is not like the other professors that grade strict as if you were majoring in English. He always lets you know what you are doing wrong . This class requires work he does not just hand out A's but then again, what writing comp professor does?
Very tough grader and many long assignments
Longoria is a good one. He is a picky grader though, but he doesn't take off that many points. He's really chilled and most of class time is used to write your essays.
Longoria expects nothing less than excellence from his students. He cares about making his students better writers and if you utilize his office hours you can get the feedback you need to elevate your writing skills. He doesn't sugarcoat anything. If you aren't afraid to work hard, and you want to be a better writer, Longoria is your professor.
He is a great person, but a tough professor! He gives time to work in class. I didn't find the topics very interesting, but he tries his best to make the class fun (we played games for extra credit points). He gives good feedback and is always willing to help, but he's still a strict grader. Highest grade I made on a paper was a B.
Longoria is a chill guy. Be prepare to write. Take the opportunity to go to office hours or study hall time to read your essays. He grades tough. He helps you by giving feedback and examples if you struggle in writing.
Horrible Professor! He is very rude to students especially if your not strong in your writing skills. He assigns many papers during the week and weekend and you frequently have to be checking blackboard all the time. He wants to push you but at the same time not understanding we also have other classes to pertain too.
Dr. Santiago is very good professor but the class is very demanding from the other writing comp professors, I have seen at UTSA and he is really not that lenient in his grading. Weekends will be filled with various writing assignments and extra assignments to do for his class. He feels this class should be the only class in college like 6 hours.
I took Longoria last semester for my Composition II class after taking an extremely lenient professor for Composition I. Longoria is a great professor, he is clear about what he wants from students, and he's quite funny. I thoroughly enjoyed his class, but if you don't put effort into your essays then you won't pass.
The class is somewhat fast paced with there being an essay due every 3 weeks. Each week you have something due like an outline, rough draft, ect. Attendance is mandatory. Unfortunately if you write an essay that doesn't correspond with his views you get a C on it. It took me a few essays to realize until I wrote about something boring and got an A.
Professor Longoria was an amazing professor. He grades hard, but he's extremely clear on what he wants in your essays and quizzes. We used the textbook in the beginning, but as the semester went on we didn't. Overall, I loved his class for the clear and concise expectations! An A is definitely achievable if you're willing to put in work!
BEST PROF AT UTSA!!! Amazing professor, I recommend him to everyone. His expectations of the class are clear and if you follow the writing prompts and do what is expected of you, you will get an A. He is funny, engaging, and cares about his students progress. I took him twice & he was outstanding in both classes, you have to go to class though.
Longoria is a great Professor. However, he is a TOUGH grader. You really have to work for it. There isn't much extra credit in this class. Also, he quizzes a lot. They aren't hard quizzes but you must do the readings he asks of you. Attendance is absolutely mandatory or you won't pass. Great guy and definitely enjoyed his class.
Prof. Longoria is a chill guy for the most part. He tries his best to not make class one big lecture. Occasional pop-quizzes are given over readings. Beware Longoria is a super tough grader. Grades must be earned He is extremely picky over your essay. Little feedback is given during rough draft days. Would not recommend this professor.
Professor longaria, expects you to be an professional writer by default. Get ready to impress him with your topics for essays, if he isnt assume you have failed his class.
Longoria is an all around "cool guy" as far as college professors go. The class is one of those mandatory to graduate ones so the material is dull and boring but Longoria's personality makes it a little better. He's a stickler as far as grading papers goes but it is a writing class after all. Would take him again.
Overall great professor. Yes, he is a tough grader but he will show you what to improve on and once you fix those mistakes and actually put forth effort to make an A on your essay you will receive it.
Longoria was a great professor that truly cares and invests in his students. He gives great feedback on essays and does things to help you improve your writing. I never made below a 92 on a paper. I recommend him regardless of how much writing experience you have.
Prof Longoria is incredibly smart and knowledgeable about his field (though his grading borders on nit-picky) and does a good job at inspiring his students. My biggest problem with him is the work load. He assigned an essay (with sub due dates for drafts) on the same week as a project, which all fell on midterm week. Youre gonna have late nights
Has good intentions but is an insanely tough grader. He grades as if his students were literature majors. If you miss class, he will not excuse medical reasons, even if you bring in doctors notes.
I was forced to meet requirements that were not even explained to me since I was forced to miss out the first week and he did not bother to reexplain them to me. He's extremely tough with grading and makes you feel extremely stupid if he does not agree with your topic. If you are not a favorite of his in the class, good luck.
He was a very dedicated and knowledgeable professor. I enjoyed his lecture. I was excited to learn something worthwhile. He set reasonable due dates for assignments, which helped me with planning to complete the assignments. He gave me feedback on each essay, so that I knew the strengths and weaknesses. He was a tough grader, but an effective prof.
He is very clear with instruction. If you listen to him and go to class and show effort its an easy A.
Professor Longoria is a mediocre teacher and grades every little thing. He has his way of doing his assignments and papers and if not done absolutely perfectly to his liking you will not get a good grade.
Professor Longoria is one of the hardest instructors I've ever been given. It is clear he does not read your paper thoroughly if he does not like the topic and grades you even harder if he does not agree with your topic. He expects you to be an expert writer and does not help you where you struggle. Do not suggest taking him.
Dr. Longoria makes you work for your A, but he sets a very solid foundation that I used in all my papers until I graduated. I actually in hindsight really appreciate taking him. It was a lot of writing (obviously), and he has quizzes on readings. Basically do your work, and follow APA guidelines well. He'll make you work for the A.
Overall, he is a very good professor and I would recommend to take him if given the opportunity. Sure, he makes you work for a good grade, but his feedback is very good, and he truly does show care for his students. I feel I have become a better writer thanks to the skills he has shown me. I went from receiving Cs and Bs on essays to As.
The teacher has no mercy when it came to online test mishaps. If something happens in the middle of your test like your wifi goes out, you get a zero. Normally I would understand if he would be strict, but in COVID everyone is online and complications happen all the time. Had to drop bc of too many internet problems causing failed tests.
Please for the love of god don't take this class. He grades ridiculously hard, not within reason difficult, but over the top. You will do everything you can to get an A in this class and still not be able to get there. He is not a bad teacher, but his actual grading is so tough it destroys your grade. He also assigns LOTS of work. DO NOT TAKE.
He is not a terrible teacher, but his grading is insane. He takes points off for little things and does not really help you when you ask for it. If you're failing there's no getting a better grade because he doesn't help or give extra credit. Find a different professor for this class please.
hes not a bad professor.. his grading is just very intense. He seems to always find mistakes in your essays. Good luck if you have him
Professor Longoria is a tough grader but will provide loads of feedback to help improve your work. This class can seem extremely difficult to students who aren't used to formally writing so beware of that. If you follow all of the criteria and put in effort in your work, your writing will improve over time with this course.
This class is something beyond me. He'll take points for even the tiniest of errors in your essay. Extra credit, what's that? If you do not already have knowledge about writing essays or if you struggled with it before, I do not recommend this class. Most strict professor I've ever had.
He is a good professor that makes you work for your grade. Make sure to write the papers on time or else, you will not do well in the class. If you are a good writer who is able to complete assignments quickly, then you should be fine. If you are not, then good luck but overall nice professor who wants the students to learn from the class.
He gives so much work to do every week and grades very harshly.
Okay so DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!!! I am not the type of person to just be mean to people but this man singlehandedly made me hate writing. I have always been a good writer but he grades extremely hard and doesn't really make sense with this grading style
I've always received A's on essays until this class. I understand it is a different level of criteria. Though, it is the professor's way or the highway. Follow the rubric very very closely when it comes to essays. Quizzes are easy if you read the textbook. Good lectures and notes are also a positive in this class.
While he is a likable guy and gives mostly good constructive criticism, the grading is so tough that you will not get an A. No matter how good of a writer you are, do not take this class expecting to be able to attain an A. Does not allow resubmissions, docks major points for minor errors, and his expectations create unneeded anxiety. Do not take!
Just overall horrible professor.
No consideration towards his students, very tough grader even with experienced and talented students. Often failed to connect with his students, who collectively viewed his grading as extreme and somewhat punitive. Will offer critiques to your papers that when addressed do not make much of a difference in final draft grade. Do not take.
Professor Longoria was exceptional. He instilled writing skills that will last for a 4 year degree and a professional career. Tough but fair , which is what college writers need. A professor which makes the student rid of high school basic writing and correctly introduces college literature and writing qualities. Cheers to a wonderful professor.
In my opinion, this professor was actually really good. He was very attentive and had office hours just in case you needed help. However, the grading is TOUGH. If you miss the deadlines for papers, he only reviews your work and doesn't count it for a grade, regardless of the situation. Pay attention; you'll be good. VERY hard to get an A though.
Attendance is mandatory, only have 2 absences before it affects your grade. He does not accept late work by any means, reading quiz are a little tough, he is a hard grader but gives individual feedback how to improve.
DONT TAKE IF YOU PROCRASTINATE Quizzes every now and then but 3 essays for the year Hard on deadlines very accessible outside of class Overall a likable guy Picks at essays so if grammar isnt your strong suit find another class The writing book was only used once for an academic honesty form and The Little Roadrunner was used for multiple quizzes
Professor Longoria is a friendly professor who expects the most out of his students. Don't take him if you are a procrastinator. He expects everything to be turned in on time and will not take late work. If you show up to class and the occasional office hour you can achieve a high A or B. Record his criticism to fix the errors he wants. 10/10 Prof.
Professor Longoria is overall a chill guy. He grades papers a bit harshly and does NOT accept any late work. He will give you good feedback on essays, but overall the grade depends on the final draft. Would I take him again? No. Would I recommend him? Yes.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, Professor Longoria is by far the least understanding professor I have ever had. He's an extremely tough grader, and will not cut you any slack, even in extreme circumstances. Anyone who has a job will ESPECIALLY regret taking this class. He has no empathy, and rides an EXTREME power high. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!
he does not care about your well being he only care about you being in class. I was sick for a week and he just said oh well. you're only allowed six absences which is nothing to work off of. He is a harsh grader and expects you to be a top tier writer. he also doesn't care if the bus is late and makes you late even though it's out of your control.
This professor was very helpful. He gives out lots of easy 100's that can really balance out getting a bad grade on your papers. He can occasionally be a harsh grader but he gives plenty of opportunities for you to get very helpful direct advice from him. There is one group project. As long as you show up and do your work on time you should okay.
Harsh Grader, no leeway on late work, being late for class, overall strict and hard to meet his requirements.
Longoria was a great professor, very knit-picky but amazing. He went over every outline and rough draft with us and showed us how to fix our papers to get a better grade. He even dropped a our lowest grade and one missing assignment at the end of the semester. Thank you, Longoria!
Prof Longoria is a very chill&patient professor that is clear about the class rules. Attendance is part of the grade; be sure to show up. Can be a tough grader on essays but gives chances to receive his helpful feedback. Some timed quizzes but theyre based off reading passages. Responds quickly to emails. Extra credit opportunities. I'd recommend!
Professor Longoria runs a tight ship, but it pays off. The workload is heavy, with strict deadlines and tough grading. However, his feedback is invaluable, and tools like unstuck ai can help manage the workload. Overall, a challenging yet rewarding class.
Chill if you do your work on time and show up. He is a super tough grader and expects the absolute most. Attendance is a grade, and he only gives a certain number of absences per semester before it affects ur grade. For my section, it was 2. Even if something happens, he will still count you absent. Just show up and try. You will pass.
Longoria is a great professor! As long as you pay attention during class to what he wants in his essays, it really is an easy course. All assignments have very clear rubrics and criteria. You really do have to come to class to be able to excel, but you are allowed 2 free absences without it affecting your grade.
He is an amazing professor who cares about your academics and success. There is a few essays, but that's a requirement from utsa and you'll get them no matter who you take.
Using Canvas online for the first time, I accidentally submitted a test with no answers given, days before the due date in the first week of class. I immediately emailed the professor explaining what happened, thinking "Surely he'll understand.". He responded with this counting as my 1 dropped grade and wishing me luck in the future.
Firstly, I must say that you absolutely need good time management skills in this class. Professor gives you feedback on your rough drafts, potentially improving your chances at passing your final drafts. Attendance is mandatory and more than 2 absences will affect your grade. There's 3 essays, various quizzes, & a group presentation at the end.
