terrible, i swear she holds grudges and that idea about helpful...no. depending on who you are her attitudes change drastically. if you want answers study up on what you do know so you don't feel so dumb when you ask questions

She is very mean and doesn't review at all for tests, just expects that you have understood everything. Grades labs in mysterous ways and I have never seen her give a perfect on labs. Stay away (if you have the choice of taking organic)

It is true that if she likes you, the class goes a little easier. She is really tough on grading everything. Take comfort in the fact that no one does well in this course. She is a good teacher and knows the material, but beware the attitude.

Don't get me wrong, this class was one of the hardest I have ever taken, however, I think that Dr. Hein really knows her material. If you ever have any questions, she is almost always available during her office hours to help you out.

Prof. Hein was a very frustrating prof. If you go in for help, make sure you know what you are talking about. Her tests often don't reflect what you were supposed to be learning.

The class is not hard, but it is very time-consuming. Be prepared to spend 4 hours on lab reports each week if you want a decent grade. An A is possible in the class, but you just have to put a lot of time into it.

I resent that someone commented she is a not very nice if you aren't one of her suck ups. She wants you to do well in that class and makes every effort to do so. You make or break it, that is all I have to say.

I consider attinding her lecture was totally waste of time. She say one thing, then talk with other students to make sure I understand? Most of the time others don't know what she is taking about. I want to my money back!!!!

Her lectures never make any sense and she refuses to tell you the answers to questions in lecture because she wants you to figure it out on your own - which would be great if I could. Plus, I always get A's on the practice tests and feel prepared, then I get to the real test and only get a C or B.

She is a horrible professor. The class is absolutely ridiculous and incredibly hard. If you can afford to hold off for a different professor, I would recommend it. Exams are extremely hard and lectures don't really help. Everything is taught so fast there is no way to keep up. Good luck :(

On the contrary, I would have to say that Dr. Hein is a great professor who successfully prepares her students for graduate/professional coursework. I will admit, she is a very difficult prof, and it's true that she will never give you answers. The labs are long & tedious. But by the end of the course, you will have actually "learned" something.

HELL!! absolute hell...on chapter 10 in first 3 weeks of class, gave hardly any examples, had online homework that was over your head, unapproachable, rude, makes bad jokes, avoids people's questions, made me no longer interested in the nursing program, stay away, seriously.

you may hear that no one likes her because they just can't hack the class... but if they can't hack the class then she's obviously doing something wrong. she's not helpful, speeds through the material without any regard for students' understanding. Doesn't review or point out material for her tests either. very very hard... sucky class.

This is seriously the most pointless class that I have ever taken in my entire life! Dr. Hein speeds through the material so fast, it's not even worth listening. Plus, she is a complete failure at explaining things well. She is absolutely no help in the least. I think I might actually be more dumb for taking her class.

She's good. She makes teacher jokes, and tries to explain the material. It's hard, but if you go to class and lab, it's passable. I recommend studying for the tests and doing all of the homework. You can redo the homework until you get 100%.

I'd rather set myself on fire than take another class with her! She was the worst professor and didn't care if you were in the hospital and had to miss class, she still wouldn't let me make up anything that I missed while hospitalized and on top of it, she didn't believe I was hospitalized. And don't forget to smile if you want a passing grade:)

don't take her for lab.. she is the crappiest teacher i have ever had. she grades extremely hard and takes off points for stupid things just so you don't do good... when you ask her questions, she makes you feel like a dumbas.. avoid her even if she is with a good lecture teacher like miertschin. you will regret taking her.

Good lab teacher. Her labs really reinforced the concepts of the class. Was willing to spend extra time with students who were struggling to understand concepts. Ignore bad ratings here. If you are willing to show up and do the work she will be a great professor for you!

She doesn't even understand OChem, instead she puts students into groups in hopes that they'll teach each other. Labs are ridiculously because she doesn't explain anything and they're unfairly graded. She is rude and her exams are impossible to finish in the allotted time. It's worth it to wait a year to take someone else.

do whatever you can to not take organic chem with her. you need a great professor to teach a topic like ochem and she definitely is not a great prof. she doesn't teach, she wants you along with groups to figure everything out. exams are hard no matter how much effort and time you put into studying. also she laughs at you when you asks questions.

If you like teaching yourself and motivating yourself to study organic chem, then take Dr. Hein, because that is what you will be doing. Her lectures are confusing, and in lab she is impossible to please. If you want to do well in this class you will have to teach yourself organic, because she sure won't. I liked her class, but it was a lot of work

Avoid her at all costs. Class consists of answering questions out of a book while Hein cracks the whip if you're going too slow yet offers no help. You will be your own teacher. Her voice is annoying and will keep you awake at night. I feel like I'm dying a slow death for 50 minutes. Lab is extremely long, painful, and leads to depression.

Thought i had a hard major untill i had Hein, and realized it was impossible. The reason half of pre med kids change their major is only because half of them get hein. Ultimately no matter how much you learned she still destroys your gpa.She will push u to sloppily do the homework ASAP instead of learning just so she can move to the next section.

The entire class period you do workbook problems (chemactivities) which are only worth 5% of your grade, she only has 8 office hours per week, and its only about an hour per day. She expects you to get help from the supplemental instruction sessions, which if you have classes at that time, thats too bad for you.

Dr. Hein is great. She helps out in lab a lot. I like the chem activities, you have to get use to teaching yourself. She is NOT as bad as everyone makes it sound. You have to WANT to put EFFORT into the class. You will be putting in so much time into this class. O chem is hard no matter what, you have to make sure you understand it.

She really isn't a bad person especially if you go and talk to her one on one.She laughs at jokes and her labs are easy, require an hour's worth of work for each of the three parts and unlike some profs she will explain it to you as you go along.The way she answers questions sucks, but there aren't any quizes and the homework is minimal.

expect to study every single night, no exceptions. You can get away with slacking for a day,maybe two, but then you start to fall behind.If you come into her office with a basic level of understanding and the assignment mostly done,she's a push over and will give you any answer.Be persistent and ask tons of questions!She's a good lady

In Hindsight, it wasn't as bad as it seemed going through it. She does emphasize mechanisms, and your lab reports are done solo (handwritten). However, her tests do appear to be pretty brutal compared to Nalli's. Hammer away at book problems, ask plenty of questions, and be prepared to study 20 hours a week for this class, no excuses! ochem is hard

I had a tough time in this class. Her teaching style didn't match with my learning style. for some people it worked. instead of lectures, she has you make groups and figure out the material. When you ask her a question she leads you in a new direction and asks you more questions.

I don't know why so many people complain about Hein. I had Nalli first semester and Hein second, and I would recommend her over Nalli any day. She is very helpful if you ask for help, her lab reports are short and easy to do, and you know exactly what to expect for each test. Yes it's a hard class, but any OChem class is. Overall a great professor.

O Chem is Hard. How can you say Dr. Hein is not helpful if you never ask for help? All the horror stories I heard prior to class were proven to be FALSE. I think Dr. Hein is NICE and HELPFUL, provided you are willing to WORK. If you do not do the work, yet try to take up her/students' time for help, I would not blame her being "not nice."

Anyone who says Hein is either helpful or nice is one of the lucky ones to be on her good side. Hein plays a mean game of favorites that she seems to determine at the beginning of the year. If she doesn't like you, she will do anything she can to take away points from your assignments or tests. If you don't royally suck up, you will probably fail.

If you're looking for a professor to help you through learning Ochem Dr. Hein is not who you're looking for. She does seem to favor the ones who "get it" in her class. Did not enjoy taking a class from her for an entire year (350 & 351) and would absolutely not recommend anyone to take her classes.

Her teaching style is not for everyone, there is almost no lecturing, Its mostly group work, which for OCHEM can be difficult to teach yourself.Still possible to get an A, just plan on reading the book and doing ALL of the problems to teach yourself.She definitely has favorites, and is only helpful on a one to one basis. As everyone said, this is a very difficult subject, and Dr. Hein only makes it more difficult. I spent hours trying to teach myself because she doesn't teach anything in class, only to get a C in pretty much everything. It's exhausting and terrible. Don't take her unless you have no other choice.

DrHein makes a difficult topic even more difficult. If you ask a question, she will give you the most roundabout answer possible. Don't expect to do well in the labs unless you go to her office hours and get her to tell you the answers. The entire course is taught comprehensively, so teach yourself and don't forget anything and you'll be okay.

O chem will be hard no matter what professor you have. Sara is extremely helpful when go to her with well thought out, sensible questions. The in class activities make class engaging and fun. As with any o chem class, whether the professor lectures or has you do workbook exercises, you will stil need to spend a lot of time in the book studying!!

O chem is hard no matter who you have but Dr. Hein makes it much harder. TAKE DR NALLI, HALF THE CLASS SWITCHES CLASSES AFTER THE 1ST SEMESTER. She honestly sets you up for failure. Dr. Nalli's students are much more knowledgeable and know their material much better. Pretty sure some of the positive ratings on here our written by herself.

Organic chemistry is a hard class, regardless of the instructor. Dr. Hein prepares you for graduate school-which will consist of you teaching yourself. She is very helpful during office hours and holds a tutorial for help. Despite earning an A, she is tough but you'll thank her someday. Great professor as well as person.

Dr. Hein is by far the better professor if you want to actually LEARN Organic Chemistry. If you are going to have to use Ochem for you career choice, Dr. Hein is by far the better choice. Ochem is a hard course, but if you put in the time, the way she teaches it, it will stick with you forever. Highly recommend Dr. Hein

She goes waaaaay too fast while makes it harder to understand what is going on. By the time you will get to Chapter 8 with Hein, other teachers were still in Chapter 5 from other students. Labs can be tough. The class is a heavy load.

Dr. Hein doesn't believe in actually teaching students, rather, letting the students teach themselves and each other. In lecture you're in a group of four and each has an assigned role. Only the "managers" she assigned that day were allowed to ask a question. She gives many assignments online and out of a grossly unorganized book. Don't do it.

Her lectures are brief and rarely cover what we need to know for assignments, and there are a lot of them. Most of class time is spent in groups of a couple of people where she assigns problems to do, and everybody sits there confused because we have no idea what is going on. She doesn't answer questions very well- she tends to talk around them.

Dr. Hein is the worst teacher i have had. I went to the tutoring center, i went into her office hours, i asked for help whenever i could but her material and teaching sense is non comprehensive. I would highly highly highly recommend not taking any class with her.

Online homework due every class, in-class homework (due the next class if not completed in class), multiple written assignments due each Friday, very hard lab assignments, and very hard exams. She is smart, but explains things very poorly, and flies through chapters way too fast. We were always 3-4 chapters ahead of the other sections. Would avoid.

Worst professor I have ever had. Doesn't teach the material in class but wants you to learn it all by yourself. You are not allowed to ask her questions when you're in groups (every day) unless you're the 'manager.' Her 'teaching' style is basically her showing you how much smarter she is than you. Take any other professor for this class!

Dr. Hein is a good professor to take. People tend to say that she doesn't teach you and that you have to COMPLETELY teach yourself, not true at all. Yes, a good amount of the learning process is shifted towards yourself, but by the end you truly KNOW the material. Her teaching style is a mostly hit or miss which can be difficult for some people.

She has a different teaching style that can be tough for some students. Organic chemistry is a very difficult class to begin with, but she does try to make it easier for everyone. It's hard to rate a professor who doesn't really teach... You will work in assigned groups on practice problems from a workbook. She doesn't answer your questions - simply shrugs them off. This is how every class period is. Labs are okay but she doesn't grade reports evenly. If you have a problem, go to office hours - she might help you... maybe...

Dr. Hein is HORRIBLE. She literally doesn't teach. She expects people to learn the material outside of the class, and then we do group work in class. She assigns "roles" within the groups and will ONLY TALK TO THE MANAGERS. Honestly, 100% waste of money. I got an A with a professor that actually taught and a D in her class. Ridiculous.

One of my friend was happy with his life and i told him to take Dr. Hein class. He is no more with us. Rest in peace brother. :( . Apart from joke, She is horrible and please don't take her class . Skip if possible. You will be manager in her class once in a while and you'll regret that.

I don't think I will every have another professor like Sara Hein. Her daily group questions have students put into roles like the manager, who is the only one allowed to ask questions. She also tends to belittle her students when they ask questions. I learned more from the tutor than the actual professor. I would abstain from taking her class.

Hein is just not a great professor. I've always been interested in Chem and have always had an easy time learning it, but Hein wasn't great. Her way of teaching is very confusing and she often made excuses for not being able to teach something because shes an "organic chemist". If you have the option to take another professor for Chem212, do it.

I had heard how horrible Hein was but it was the only organic chemistry class I could fit in my schedule. If I could go back I would completely blown up my schedule just so I wouldn't have to take her class. She does not teach. In her words (paraphrasing) "if I teach you the material all I am doing is cementing what I know and you won't learn"

She wasn't great at explaining things and expected you to figure it out on your own, and made you feel dumb for asking questions. Amount of HW was kinda nuts. I am also in the national guard and she was a pain to deal with when I had to be gone for drill/got called up.

This is not my favorite professor. There is a lot of homework and while it is helpful in the class, it does not make the tests easier. The tests are so difficult, and in my opinion, very hard to study for. The homework, labs, group work, and other assignments raise your grade, but the tests are extremely difficult.

Worst professor I've ever had. Her lectures are super confusing and she's heavy on group work. Very demeaning and talks down to students when they ask questions. Other professors also have nothing nice to say about her. Avoid at all costs.

I would definitely not recommend. In the first day of lab all she did was yell at me because I didn't do something right and then she wouldn't explain what I did wrong. She doesn't lecture, you watch kahn academy videos and read and she expects you to learn the material that way.

Great person out of class and very professional. Her ways of teaching is NOT for everyone. You prepare for her lectures by watching videos, then come to class and do textbook exercises as groups. Tests are tough and a bit hard to prep for. And the way she grade is harsh. It almost feels like she's always looking for something to take off points.

Very difficult and unreasonable when it came to the pandemic. She's an okay person, but not someone I learned a lot from. She was always able to find something wrong with every lab even if you made sure to fix things she commented on previously.

Dr. Hein's intentions were great and it's clear that her method could really benefit students. Unfortunately nobody has the time for that much work and other classes and a job or life. Not everyone learns the same way. It was the hardest thing I've ever done be prepared to work. Don't miss anything. 40hr/week minimum and got a C. Go to S2I

Professor Hein is a yeller and very strict which I personally don't deal well with making the class difficult for me because it triggers my anxiety. She also never actually tells her students what assignments they need to do, you are expected to figure it out yourself and she gives LOTS of homework. Would not recommend.

Hein has very little empathy for students. She expects students to know material before even coming into class for the day. Also gives out an 1 hour of homework for each class, so it ends up being around 3-4 hours of homework a week outside of the class material, which most likely needs to be finished outside of class too. Would avoid taking her.

Hein is by far the worst professor ive ever had. You are expected to do homework on topics you havent covered in class. Her lectures are dry and she skips around material faster than a rabbit on coke. You get 1 - 2 hours of homework every class period, not including lab. Go to S2I, i learn more from the tutor in a hour than from her in 2 weeks.

First off, I would like to say that I love chemistry and that Sara Hein is a wonderful person outside of the classroom. However, her class is designed for the failure of students. She has little to no regard for the actual education and emotions of her students. She will not teach you and demean those who cant learn by not being taught.

Dr. Hein was a hard professor, but honestly very helpful if you put the time and effort into her class. She held weekly tutorial lessons that helped me get a better understanding of her course which helped my grade a lot. She is a hard professor but wants her students to succeed.

So much homework. If you want to take Sara I recommend go to tutor sessions, s2i sessions, and office hours. Lectures as if you’re a chemist and you should already know everything she’s teaching. Lab are extremely difficult to get full points. Hein doesn’t give help directly.

This class was absolute bogus, to say the least. She expects us to know what she's teaching before she "teaches" it. I basically taught myself. Her labs were confusing and she DOES NOT provide any sort of study guide for her exams, not to mention the insane amount of homework. To say the least, avoid this class/professor at all costs.

You have to teach yourself everything, I recommend getting a tutor. Labs help a lot because the prof actually teaches and helps you. Online AND paper homework every class with weekly quizzes. 4 tests and a final. She treats you like kids and has everyone raise their hands and be quiet like in elementary school. Lots of teamwork-like math classes

Hein does not understand the material she is teaching, frequently contradicts herself, and is corrected by students. She assigns two homework assignments and a reading for every class to compensate for her complete lack of instruction. I learned more from my lab professor than I did in all of the "lectures". Doesn't care about her students success.

Left to fend for ourselves in lab, given excessive (daily, multiple) homework assignments which were graded harshly, and if you ask questions she will laugh or belittle you. Her lectures went too fast and she even told us "with people keep talking, she will just go faster and faster." (People were talking because they were all so confused)

I wish I did not take this class with Hein. Her method of teaching is to teach/learn it yourself. She will sometimes assign group assignments due the next class with no warning. Her tests can be based on one class period.

In class group work similar to math class except you are expected to teach yourself everything outside of class. You will know the despair of being the recorder 4 times in a row by the end of the semester. 40+ hours a week minimum required if you want a decent grade.

You do in class group activities to "learn" the material with sparse lectures. You will never have enough time to finish the group work and will likely have to spend hours teaching yourself from other resources/students. I would strongly recommend taking this class with a different professor if you care about GPA or the content of the class.

This class is really hard, but it's not anywhere near impossible. Dr. Hein is a good professor and her lectures are solid but they're more of an overview. Plan to spend around 2-3 hours a day outside of class for homework and studying (I'm not joking) - She can seem intimidating at first but she is a very kind professor who cares about her work.

This class is one of the hardest classes I ever took. I think I would've loved this class if it wasn't the way she taught her class. Going to her office hours did not help at all, she would always make you feel dumb. She never admits she's in the wrong, even when she makes a mistake. Overall, avoid her if you can. Good luck if you have to take her.

Professor Hein is a hard grader, she will help you if you go to her office hours. But will make you feel incompetent. Homework assignments/ labs require a lot of critical thinking, so be prepared to put aside at least 3 hours a day to do them. Overall I wouldn't recommend taking this class, with her.

I think Dr. Hein gets rough ratings because Chem 210 is so difficult, but Dr. Hein herself does teach the course well !!! If you show you care about learning the material, show up for class, and work like you would in any difficult class you can get by fine. I literally think she is so sweet and I really enjoyed Sara Hein.

Professor Hein is not a good professor. She goes over lectures fast and assumes you already know the material like she does. Going to her office hours rarely helped because when you asks questions she make you feel dumb. She also assigns around 2-3 hours of online and written homework a day that barely count towards your overall grade.

Run. Away. (if you can) Ive always had good grades but with her its HARD. CHEM210 is tough enough but her lack of empathy/understanding for her students makes it 10x worse. If you dont understand when she explains it the first time its truly too bad. I wouldve had an A if labs werent 30% of our grade & she graded them fair & with explanation. Run.

Dr. Hein is a horrid excuse for a professor. She has made several people in my class cry due to berating them for not already knowing advanced chem topics, yet this is an INTRODUCTORY chemistry course. I would never recommend this professor to everybody. Not sure why WSU keeps this professor around as she is a negative point for the university.

If you have to take chemistry I repeat DO NOT take it with Hein. She goes through lectures way too fast and belittles students. I have never met a professor that makes me want to cry. Expect to spend 30-40 hours a week in this class with written hw, online hw, lab, studying, etc. She is awful and doesn't care about the students.

She is very tough but an amazing person and very caring for their students. I went several times to her office hours and she is always willing to help you. You need to put effort if you want to pass but she is really nice and if you are hard worker I recommend you to take her.

Dr. Hein is very knowledgeable and helpful if you go to office hours. Make sure to follow your lab procedure super carefully as you have to complete the lab correctly before you leave, keep up on content in lectures. The exams are relatively tough but if you understand the content generally you should get at least a C or B.

Do not take this professor. She doesn't teach, you are expected to learn on your own before class and then do group assignments in class. Posts rubrics for the post labs and even if you follow it exactly, you get a max of 15/20. Class started full and ended with maybe 1/4th of the students. So much homework, impossible exams. Avoid at all costs.

Probably one of the worst teachers I have ever had throughout 14 years of schooling. The amount of assignments and quizzes taken during the year, although relevant to the material, felt at though we were just being assigned busy work over and over again. During lectures she would mess up, get upset with students for not knowing how to things.

Sara Hein is the worst teacher I have had in my life. She is rude and condescending to her students and she enjoys watching students struggle. I actually tried to report Hein to the school but I was basically told to just rough it out for the rest of the semester and nothing could be done. I would recommend finding any different professor ever.

I think if Dr. Hein were to actually use her decades of organic chemistry knowledge to educate her students instead of belittling them, we wouldn't have to spend so much time outside of class teaching the subject to ourselves. She expects her students to understand the subject as if we were the ones with a phd qualifying us to teach it.

If you go to Dr. Heins office hours when you need help and put the work in to understand the material you can get a good grade. She can make assignments unnecessarily complicated and confusing sometimes. However, the lectures were usually good, and I liked her style of teaching. She does care about her students, it's just not immediately obvious.

You need to be mature enough to understand that her teaching method is actually the most suitable and best for organic chemistry. Learn by doing. If you want to do well, you will have to do the effort. She is caring for her students and explains things well. Do the homework, go to S2i, go to her office hours and ask as many questions as possible.
