Sara Henary seems like a really nice lady, but she is such a boring professor. I took honors Political Science with her and there was a TON of boring reading for the boring lectures. Also, we had two tests which were the midterm and the final and they were all essays. No other grades and no extra credit. Take with a different teacher.
The best advice for college: Do. Not. Take. Sara. Henary.
Reading assignments will be around 25+ pages a class. She will ask a question and will wait a long time for an answer. Her lectures are boring but informative if you manage to pay attention. The best way to learn is to ask your own questions and answer hers. Preparation for Essay assignments will be the hardest time for the class.
This woman is without a doubt the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. I am not a straight A student but I have only received one C in college after three years of full course loads. This is the first time I have ever graded someone on rate my professor but this woman is so awful that I felt that I had to warn others. Be warned.
She literally has no idea what she is doing. She can't explain the difference between an A and a B paper. Her lectures are extremely boring. I will concede she does a decent job of explaining points in the lecture but at the point where she can't even begin to remotely justify her own grading I have to give her a 1 on clarity.
I feel like a lot of people are being unnecessarily negative. Yes, she is a hard professor; but, honestly, she is what a college professor should be. Yes, there is a lot of reading & a big emphasis on class discussion. But if you are at college to actually LEARN something, not just memorize for a test, she is very helpful. I have learned so much.
Her classes are so boring and studying for her midterm and final makes me want to kill myself. Seriously do not take her.
Worst class I have taken at MSU. I would avoid her at all costs. Her lectures are very boring, monotone, and confusing. She makes it very difficult to follow along during class lectures and discussions. Very tough grader; almost impossible to get an A on a test or paper. Homework is usually 50+ pages of reading per night.
If you like a monotone teacher who leads a discussion that puts people like me to sleep, if you like doing lengthy reading before class, and if you like only having 2 tests this is the class for you.
There is a lot to read! At least 3 articles ever night which is a lot and homework every week. Lectures are very boring. Midterm and final are both essay tests which are very hard but if you actually do the work, pay attention, and study then you can get an A. She was very willing to help during her office hours and was very nice.
Never have I despised a class or teacher this much. Political science already is not one of my favorite subjects and she made me want to quit the class. She gives feedback on weekly reading responses and essays, but itit's never very clear or helpful. She says to correct one thing, then another. If you truly want to suffer, take her class.
If you get Professor Henary I would advise you to change professors as soon as possible. She is a very nice person and is helpful in her office hours, except that when you ask her a question she "beats around the bush" and never fully answers your questions. If your'e the type of student who loves politics and/or loves reading then take this class.
I have never hated a class more. There is so much reading to do for each class period and there are only 4 grades that go in to count as an overall grade. In class discussion, she doesn't answer questions directly and pretty much just agrees with everyone's statements. Unless you really love politics, don't take this class.
My class with Professor Henary was challenging, but enjoyable. She went very in depth on most of the the topics, and although the lectures weren't always mesmerizing, they were very informative and interesting. If you did all the reading and studied, the class wasn't too hard. I liked Professor Henary and would recommend her if you want to learn.
Prof Henary seems like a nice person, but cannot teach to save her life. She assigns a ridiculous amount of reading for every class period, and only 4 grades count for the semester. I went over an essay in office hours with her, she said it looked great, but gave me a B when I turned it in.
This class caused me so much agony. There were only four real grades in the class that I got the exact same grades on each of. She grades super hard.
Dr. Henary was a very monotone professor and often led me to fall asleep every day in class. The founding fathers honors college class was very boring and I do not recommend anyone else take it. I truly enjoy history and everyday in class I found myself looking at the clock every minute. Very tough grader on papers as well.
Dr. Henary is one of my favorite professors at MSU. It's true that she is a very tough grader, however, she makes herself available to talk in her office hours multiple times a week. Talk to her about your papers and your exams! Go multiple times a week! Do the work and do your best and you'll do well. She is a very wonderful person and professor.
DO NOT take her UHC class. This class was extremely hard for a class all freshman are required to take. She grades extremely tough and is not worth the work. This class is by far the hardest UHC class at MSU. This is coming from a student who got all A's in the rest of their classes.
You would be better off transferring to a different school with a single credit needed, as opposed to taking Sara Henary's PLS 330. It is the absolute worst class of my entire life. I am a good student and a PLS Major. This class made me dread going to school. She is the worst teacher in the history of college professors.
She's an upper level PLS teacher, so if you're taking her for one of those political theory classes, I'm sure she's fine, but for lower level classes avoid her at all costs, especially if you're not a PLS major. Midterm and final were the only grades, and for each we had 7 long essay questions. Believe only 1 person ended class with an A.
Prof. Henary's class was the worst class that I have taken at MSU. It is a very lecture heavy class with extremely long reading assingments. Grades you recieve are only from her essays and finals which she is very picky about grading. It's an extremely difficult class which I would reccommend avoiding at all costs. It's near impossible to get an A.
Absolutely aweful, most of the class went into the final with C's or D's
Class was very difficult. I honestly didnt do the readings but went to class everyday. Make sure to mark quotes she mentions because you will have to explain every detail about them on the tests. Take good notes, mark the quotes, & you should be fine. But STUDY.
This was the hardest class that I have ever taken. I dreaded going, and it sucked. There are only four grades. I got a 72% on the midterm (I left feeling good about it). When I went to ask her about why my grade was so low/what should I change for the final, the explanation didn't really make sense. It sucked because I liked the lectures.
Very nice, bland, tough grader, two essays and two exams. Good luck
Easily one of the hardest classes in the major. Brilliant professor but the lectures are completely verbal and the readings are tough to digest even for seasoned vets. If you don't read you will STRUGGLE, absolutely no cap.
This class is the perfect blend of dense abstract philosophical concepts with the least engaging lecture format imaginable. Worst PLS grade received. Very tough grader. If you don't stay on top of the readings you're in big trouble. Dr. Henary will use every second of class. Go to office hours every week if you can. Do not fall behind. Good luck.
i was gonna take this class because i needed another honors class, but i dropped because her class was so ridiculously hard. there's two/three papers, and then a final. she does extra credit quizzes every once in a while, but you need to get 8 questions right to get ONE POINT of extra credit. papers are worth 25 and 35% of your grade. DO NOT TAKE
Dr. Henary is a fantastic professor, but her class is very difficult. She truly cares about her students and is willing to speak with them at a moment's notice. The feedback she gives is phenomenal and you will come out of the class a better thinker and writer. You have to work hard, but her class is worth it in the end. I hope to have her again.
Do not take this class if you work a job, hate reading, and/or aren't in love with Poly Sci. This is by far the worst class I have ever taken. All lectures were completely verbal besides an outline. She always continued to talk after the time was up for class. She was not helpful when it came to the paper. Her lectures are extremely hard to follow.
Expect to read a ton or else you will have issues in class. Difficult grader for how confusing the lectures are
most difficult professor I have ever had, and I'm an A student
Ohh Professor Henary. Hardest class I've ever taken. Four grades -- two essays and two tests and all the tests are timed essays that are brutally graded. She is very helpful in office hours and gives good feedback via email but usually I am still disappointed by my grade even though I try hard in this class. She's smart but it's a rough class.
This is the most challenging class Ive ever taken. I have never worked harder in my life. Go to office hours, read, and study til your eyes bleed. She is a good professor and knows her stuff; however, she is a really tough grader over already challenging concepts.
You are asking for a C just signing up for this class. Shes a horrible teacher.
She does not provide good notes or study guides A lot of hard reading is required but she is scattered in the lectures and fails to articulate what is most important then gets mad when the whole class fails the tests. She is kind-hearted but she is not organized enough to help her students succeed.
Every class is the same long and boring lecture that does not seem to benefit anyone in the class given that 95% of the class failed the first exam. If you express your frustration about the class and see her during office hours for help she will only suggest that you be able to teach yourself the material. Out of class work is long & not retaught
One of the worst teachers I've had. Tests are unnecessarily hard, and when you ask for help, all she does is tell you to go over your notes and readings more, even if you've already done that multiple times. There are no study guides or additional help. She does not understand her student's needs. I'm sure she's a nice person, but as a teacher, no.
The way she teaches this course should B taught to Master's Degree students, NOT 100 level undergrad gen eds. WAY 2 much 2 often. Readings R extremely intellectual & frustrating. She also lacks compassion 2 give U guides on what's important 2 understand. Not a good leader. Tests r specific, info is extremely broad, lectures disorganized/dont help.
If you don't have to take this class, then do not. She grades like it's a graduate-level course even though juniors are taking it. She is really into the topics covered which I can respect, but the amount of time spent on this class is ridiculous, especially since I will rarely use its content in real life
**DO NOT TAKE** Save your money, this is the absolute worst professor at Missouri State. Tough grader, she is also all over the place in her lectures.
She is a horrible professor, all over the place in her lectures. I have never tried so hard in a class and failed. She is really no help in office hours either.
Withdrew from the class last week because I was failing. I showed up to every lecture, went to office hours, and even sought help outside of the class. I felt like I was doing everything right. Yet when the time came, still failed the test and essays. Dont take Sara.
Don't. 2 essays, 2 tests (which meant write 3-5 essays in 50 minutes). That's the entire grade. Get ready to spend all your money printing readings (because she doesn't use a textbook) and no computers in class. I was miserable all semester and almost dropped at midterm. You can tell she knows what she's talking about but is bad at explaining it.
For the love of all that is holy, do not take Professor Henary. The amount of required reading is ridiculous, there are only 4 grades for the entire course, 2 of which are essay exams that are graded as harshly as essays written over the course of a week. The lectures are also completely useless. Professor Henary does not know how to run a class.
It takes until after the first essay and test to know what to take notes on. She is very open about this at the beginning of class. She is a tough grader. She is helpful at her office hours, but don't expect to get a great grade in this class. Philosophy is just a really hard subject to grasp. 2 essays, 2 tests, participation grade.
If you aren't a PLS major, don't take this class. The class structure is very difficult considering there is only a vague outline that she follows for her lecture. The readings are pretty dense and it is super easy to get behind. Very difficult to know what she is looking for in papers and tests. Definitely go to her office hours as much as you can
This class alone is extremely difficult, pair that with the professor's inability to organize the class effectively, and it is near impossible. On top of the unorganized environment, the professor grades like it is a graduate-level class, and if you do not live by the books assigned, you will not pass. If you take this prof, good luck.
I recommend this class if you are interested in PLS and have the time and energy to work for a good grade. Attend office hours, go to class, do ALL of the readings (of which there are many), and you will pass. This class helped me develop my writing skills and I learned some pretty interesting things about American politics. Not for everyone though
Not a good teacher overall. Gives bad lectures and expects you to remember small details from the readings. Class is scored entirely on tests which she doesnt help you prepare for at all.
Professor Henary is very talented and knows her stuff. She is well respected. However, if you are taking this class, my advice is don't. Does not matter how much you read or study, you will get a C at best. 4 tests were the final grade. Always a lecture, moved too fast for notes and does not let you record lectures.
She gives no study guides or homework its all just lectures
You are harshly graded on 2 tests (essay format), 2 essays, and random pop quizzes that focus on the smallest details of the readings. This class drowns you in readings that are hard to understand. Her lectures have no clear format and she is hard to follow during them. It's very easy to fall behind and not understand the primary focus of the topic
I have taken about every single political science class at Missouri State, this one is my least favorite by far. She is a very nice person, but her grading is extremely hard (especially on the essays). She takes what is an interesting class and makes it where you dread going to it. Unfortunately, she's the only one who teaches this class.
I took this class a semester ago and i’m still fired up back here to make sure that nobody has to go through what I did. I am an intelligent student with a fierce work ethic, and let me tell you, I did absolutely everything in my power to do well in that class. It seems you don’t even learn anything in the lectures, it’s all opinionated talk.
Here I am again for the third time now leaving another review from a class that I took a semester ago. I am a cell and molecular biology major with a what should be 4.0 gpa if it wasn't for Professor Sarah Henry. I have straight A's in classes 10x harder than PLS yet somehow I managed to collect my first C in a gen ed class.
Professor Henary was a wonderful person. I just could not keep up with the work load for the class. Class time consisted of lectures the entire 50 minutes we were in class. She assigned a textbook and made you read anywhere from 7 to 20 pages before every class. If you wrote an outline for every chapter, you would receive 15 bonus points on thetest
I learned the most out of any of my classes from Dr. Henary's class. She is an absolutely brilliant woman. Be prepared to read many different book to learn many worldviews, and be prepared for two papers and two tests.
Gives extra credit opportunities for each test which have brought my test grades up by full letter grades. No other assignments are in the gradebook besides tests from the lectures. She grades of stuff from the book whether or not she talked about it or not. Very intelligent but asks us to remember too many minute details.
Dr. Henary is the toughest professor in the PLS department. Her class is very difficult, but you will come out with so much knowledge. You must read quite a bit for each class, and write strictly-graded papers. She does not insert political opinions, which is highly admirable. If you don't want to do the work, I don't suggest taking this class.
As someone who has taken many honors courses, this was by far the most taxing. It was unnecessarily difficult. The final consisted of 20 questions we had to prepare, 7 of which would be on the test, and 5 we had to write essays over. There are hours of reading, all she does is lecture, she enters 4 grades total, and grades extremely tough. AVOID.
Terrible class. Highly recommend taking it elsewhere or by another professor. The worst grade I have ever gotten in a class. Expects you to read 30-plus pages a night. Most of the readings are not comprehensible. Good Luck if you're taking it.
Dr. Henary is a good lecturer, but her expectations are very high and you will log more hours for her class than you will for any other.
Granted it has been almost a year since I took a class with her, but I will say that I have a different perspective than most. Yes, Dr. Henary is a tough professor and expects a lot from her students. However, this is in the end to make us better students. If you show up, do the readings, ask questions, take notes, and study, you WILL be just fine!
She focuses on one point for about 45 minutes then, speeds past the rest. Has a very monotone voice, hard to focus.
Entire Lecture is a yap sesh. The entire class is 4 tests. Good luck anyone taking this class.
Absolutely horrific professor. I would avoid this class at all cost.
Avoid at all costs, as she says "anything I say or in the book goes", described the class average being 60% as disappointing because we missed questions which were "low hanging fruit" - that class average was after a curve by the way...
Only grades in the grade book are four exams. Class average is a 60% and has not gotten higher throughout the year. Maybe it's not the students fault like she keeps implying??
This is by far the hardest class I've taken. Unclear and often conflicting grading criteria. Unhelpful during office hours. Will never be able to tell you why she graded how she did. Too much reading, unorganized lectures, does NOT teach the material. Missouri State needs to reevaluate her immediately. Only 4 grades for the whole class.
I have a different perspective than most. However, if you put in the time and effort to understand the content, you will be just fine. Dr. Henary is always willing to listen to all questions, takes, or any help. She always recommends visiting office hours, and I would highly recommend it. Just do the work, and put in the time.
She is an excellent person, but not so much an instructor. She is nice and easy to reach, and she will go over the tests with you to see what you got wrong and give you feedback to improve. There are only 4 tests for 96% of grade, 4% participation, and no way to get a better score if you do poorly on tests. It's too harsh for a 101-level course.
Genuinely this class could be really fun and interesting, you will essentially be teaching yourself by reading 5 different books and then expected to take exams and write essays based on little to no prompting but get graded as if there was. Anytime I've talked to her outside of class it has been 0 help. I'd rate in the negatives if I could.
Tough class and breakdown. 4% attendance, 24% exams (4 total). Very lecture-heavy, super boring, and not fun or engaging. Tests you over mainly the textbook which can be hard to follow with lectures. Plan on basically teaching yourself the material.
Professor only gives grades for the 4 exams and does not give study guides. Lectures are boring, and there is minimal student interaction. Regurgitates the textbook. Has a lot of court cases on the exams. Memorize all cases mentioned in the textbook and class. Don't take unless you're okay with teaching yourself and good at multiple choice tests.
I found this professor very hard to follow in class and the only grades you get from this class are test grades. There is so much material to cover and we are given little to no guidance on what to study so you need to be prepared for anything and everything to be on the tests.
She is a very nice person but, the class isn't very well structured in my opinion. What you need to study is very up in the air and the lectures are hard to follow. There are only exams in this class, no assignments so, if you don't do well on the exams then you're going to fail.
She only has lectures in class and she writes her points on the board and just lectures at you for the whole class. There are only 4 grades and they are the 4 test you take. The content on the test can be anything that you read in the textbook or what she says in the lectures. Take notes and read your textbook!
The readings are hard, there is no getting around that. However, if you ask questions and pay attention in class you will be FINE! I think she is lenient grader when it comes to the papers and you can visit her office hours for feedback on your arguments before submitting. The test are fine if you are familiar with the readings and study.
Absolutely dreaded this class every day. There was lots of reading and your only grades in the class were four tests that were extremely hard. You had to keep up every day or you would have no idea what was going on. The only plus side was that there was a curve on tests.
You have no idea what's going to be on the tests, there's no study materials or assignments to go off of. She doesn't even write anything except for four points on the board and half the time you never know what point she's on. She just stands there and lectures and I would not recommend this class to anyone. Take a different professor if you can.
One thing I will say in her defense is that she is clearly very smart. However, she isn't a good teacher. Grade Composition: 20% Essay 1, 20% Midterm, 25% Essay 2, 25% Final, 10% Participation. If you can't read and write well, AVOID. I had a 4.0 GPA before this class. Unless you have ample time for close reading of text, DON'T TAKE. HARSH grading.
Awful class, total snoozefest. Easy to fall asleep so if your roomate is loud, just take PLS 101 and you'll get an hour and a half of sleep no problem. Tests are unecessarially difficult for an introduction-level class, get ready to memorize what George Washington had for lunch on December 7th because that's what 96% of your grade is going to be.
Difficult class, but not impossible: do the readings, go to class, learn to take quick handwritten notes and know how to pick out main ideas through listening, go to office hours. Sucks because you can work hard and understand the material but do bad because there are only four grades. I will probably be in the A/- range after she grades the final.
Do NOT recommend. Entire grade is dependent on 4 grades. Midterm/Final were handwritten, timed/seated essays. Papers were graded harder than my actual English class. A lot of reading is required, so if you like to have any sort of free time, choose another professor. Going to office hours did not offer enough feedback to improve my work.
Henary is easily the most articulate professor in the political science department. Her lectures are captivating and she shows passion, intricate understanding, and purpose during her classes. She is a tough grader and structures her classes based off very minimal assignments, but taking a class from her is a wonderful learning experience.
She only graded you on a total of 4 tests you received, I ended with a 69.40 and she wouldn't round up so I could pass, reading HEAVY, no study guide either which was tricky!!
If you find yourself in ANY of Henary's classes, drop out immediately or pick a god and start praying.
Dr. Holifield (Henary)'s classes are known to be terrible. Expect to read 5-6 books and then discuss them like a book club during class. You will write 2 out-of-class essays, take 2 written finals, and then get some credit for participation to determine your grade. You need to cater to her personal opinions about the author's messages. Good luck.
