Sara Smit is my absolute favourite prof. She is passionate about what she is teaching and truly cares about her students. Her class consisted of weekly forums, 5 fun assignments, and a take-home final. She made the class so enjoyable and manageable for her students. Very fair grading and understanding professor. Highly recommend taking her course.
The lectures are interesting as she is a great prof. We did have break out rooms, but besides that the grading is based off forum posts and assignments. The assignments are simple and forums are worth a large portion of grade and are easily marked. Take this class for an easy workload and if you want to improve your Business communication skills.
Sara Smit is a kind, caring, and helpful individual. She cares about her students success and gives amazing lectures. Her BUS205 class is very educational and interesting. Expect weekly discussion posts and bi-weekly assignments. Assignments and discussion posts are easy to follow and complete. The only downside is the textbook. Its pretty dry.
Sara Smit is is a kind and respectful professor. Her lectures are engaging and interesting. There are weekly discussion forums and assignments that test the content taught in the class. Fair and clear grading.
She is so sweet. I adore her. Her class is not difficult, all over zoom as of right now. Her ice breakers are awesome. She gives breaks in her classes and isn't boring. Her UR courses page is very organized.
Sarah is a great professor, she's super nice and down to earth. She will make sure you have the resources needed to succeed. The word counts for discussion posts and assignments are easily achievable, nothing bigger than 2000 words. The required readings are short and actually interesting. Make sure to take BUS 205 with Sarah you won't regret it.
Professor Smit was very caring and ready to help when needed. At the end of the semester she said that if we need anything, especially if it is writing, to come talk to her. The assignments were not difficult, and were easy to follow along. The lectures were good, and they were short as well. Definitely didn't feel like a hour.
Accessible and made an online class feel like it was delivered in-person. I highly recommend to take her as she does not disappoint. For this being her firs university taught course it was well managed and delivered.
Professor Sara is a terrific professor. I learned a lot of new things in this class with her guidance. Her class material is quite organized. She values class discussion and participation. On the other hand, the assignments are somewhat challenging but help reinforce what you learned. Don't hesitate to pick this class with Sara!
Sara is an amazing professor. I do not enjoy writing classes but I genuinely looked forward to this one. The assignments are fair and usually do not take more then about 3 hours. The final was take home and the class was super engaging. Highly recommend taking it with her if you have the chance.
Please take this class with Sara. It was clear from day one how much she cared about her students. The course material could be dry, but Sara managed to make it entertaining and enjoyable. Most of the material was fairly simple, but assignments allowed you to apply the material to realistic situations. She is one of the best profs I've ever had!
Sara Smit-amazing, helpful. I studied online. Attendance is not mandatory. Uploads recorded lecture. Reading needed. 1 discussion forum due every week worth 2%. 1 assignment due every alternative week (1 in 14 days) worth 10%. No quizzes. 5% bonus if we participate in class OR a presentation. Final exam-take home worth 25%. Above-average marker
I can't recommend Sara Smit enough. She is very down-to-earth, patient and empathetic. The textbook although having a little bit of jargon and common-sense information, does truly have practical knowledge in it. The main goal is for classmates to talk about certain topics so they can become better communicators. Assignments are engaging.
Her class is really a stress buster. There are no midterms, no quizzes. Everybody must take her class. She is not at all strict and is very helpful. No burden of her class and you will willingly participate in her class. She's best.
Professor Smit is awesome, very kind and understanding and is always down to proof read essays. She is not that strict on marking but she does have to follow a department rule for average so beware. Highly recommend if your are looking for a great prof!
She is amazing! The way she teaches can reach everyone and she is always ready to talk and help. She is fun and energetic and really cares and it shows. She creates a safe place while challenging you to do your best. I would and will recommended her to everyone! I'm not much of a school person but I genuinely look forward to her class!
She is an amazing professor. Easily accessible. Her lectures are fun. I attended her classes in person. She does not put pressure on students. Her assignments are comparatively easy and she always wants her students to succeed.
Assignments are marked with a vague rubric that I still don't understand, if attendance didn't matter then no one would show up to class at all. Final will be hard considering I learned absolutely nothing over this four-month course.
Definitely take Sara if you have the chance to. Really good teacher that cares about her students and encourages them to try their best. Gives breaks during class and lectures are chill. All around good prof.
like the way of teaching , extra ordinary and enjoyable environment create for study also
Sara is a really fun professor. She is very understanding of her students and is very relaxed. She has great lectures that are clear and easy to listen to. She marks fair and is very clear about what she wants out of her students.
The professor is really nice and caring. I enjoyed her class a lot. She made the class so interesting, I was excited to go to her class.
Take her class if you can! She is amazing. There are a lot of readings, but they are quick read ones. She is one of the caring professors in this university.
awesome prof should take class surely
SHES JUST AWESOME!!
Overall just a great professor and it is always nice listening to Sara teach.
All the textbook readings are useless. Participation forces attendance. I was not engaged and did not learn anything over the course of four months. I swear this course is why people say college degrees are just useless pieces of paper. This felt more like daycare/show-and-tell for adults than an examination of your writing skills.
Professor Smit truly cares about her students. She is supportive and encourages her students. The workload is good. I would take another course from her anytime. Classes were relaxed and fun. She interacts with the class and does not just push information at you.
I enjoyed the class. I would recommend taking a class with Sara
>Attend wednesdays for participation marks >Learn 1 strunk rule only >Dont read the textbooks >walk away with a good mark This course is frustrating in that getting a good mark is easy, but a great mark is impossible. Marking criteria made zero sense. I did not learn anything, this course is vapid and people like it because its easy.
A bit of a heavy marker, but she was amazing! one of the best profs I've ever had. Very nice and joyful. I loved her break-out rooms and she gave good feedback on assignments.
Has to be my favorite prof so far, she is super funny and incorporates her humour into the lectures to make them fun. Gets involved with the class to make everyone feel comfortable and helps them build their skills to succeed. Gives good feedback, and is clear with grading rubrics. 10/10 recommend.
An awesome professor who cares for her students. One thing that bothers people is that she doesn't let her students get a 90 in her class, because she wants the average to fall between 65%-75%. Still, she will give a high grade if you go above and beyond. I don't think anyone failed her class!!
Very fun lady, super passionate about students success. She is super good professor and I recommend for this class. Sometimes class drags on, so you may gain an online shopping addiction.
i love her. one of the best profs i ever had
Had a great time in Saras' class. She grades fairly, only focuses on need to know subject matter, grading criteria is very clearly specified. There is lots of group participation and presenting which although I am not a fan of, she made it as comfortable for us as she could. Textbooks where provided for free.
She is overall good. A problem with the class I had was I was unable to understand the requirements to get a good grade on assignments. Also, the feedback she gives after she marks them is very vague and did not help me understand what I did wrong. Still a great class and it greatly improved my emailing skills
Sara is an amazing prof. This is one of the best classes I've taken. One class a week will be a lecture, then the next one will be breakout rooms which are used for participation marks. Content is easy to follow and not full of useless information. Assignments are reasonable and have clear directions. Breakout rooms are very fun. No textbook.
Definitely one of my favourite classes this semester. She always tells us exactly what she wants and she also goes through examples and reviews before the assignments so we're sure. She's sweet and engaging and she wants us to do well. Sometimes, her lectures drag on but otherwise, if you see her name, you should definitely take her class!
This professor is really very worse. She forces students for coming in class . She will not see your efforts , and just say you have this similarity and fail you. Take this course at your own risk.
She is the worst teacher ever. took bus 205 but the grades she gave are pathetic and I can bet no one else can grade me like that. my eng 100 grades were more than her grades. Do not take class from her!!!!
Very caring and engaging professor. Showing up and participating is a large part of your grade. Writing assignments can be graded quite difficulty so make sure to start early. Final was straightforward. You can tell Sara really cares about her students and is passionate about teaching writing.
Yeah don't bother reviewing my work or giving feedback if my grade is based on you not getting fired for having a class average above 70%. I am an amazing writer, its not my fault your marking system is fundamentally rigged so that your weekly party goers can still pass your class.
Knowledgeable and kind professor. Had a lot of fun in her class. If you follow the rubric ,you will do good. Lectures are interesting. Cant get bored.
Sara Smit is a great prof. This was my first business class and probably my favourite class that I have taken so far because of the professor. She is caring and gives students lots of time to complete their assignments. The textbook was free, the grading criteria was clear, and the final was manageable. I highly recommend taking her class.
Crazy how I have job XP and have written thousands of emails, yet my marks here are abyssmal. I guess grading curves mean the funny frat kids aren't allowed to fail your class even if they put way less effort than you.
I loved BUS 205 with Sara. She was so clear and easy to communicate with, not to mention fun and interesting lectures. 100% recommend her.
Sara's a great prof. Very understanding. By far my favourite prof at the U of R.
Sara is a great prof. I took her night class this semester and was very pleased that I never had the urge to doze off during lectures. This class pushed me out of my comfort zones by doing daily breakout rooms and talking/making connections with the other students in the class. Even as an outgoing person I found myself challenged in a good way.
Sara is a professor that really cares about her students. Her lectures are engaged and she always has a positive attitude. I recommend taking English 100 with her as her assignments are fairly easy. She does assign a lot of readings but they are typically short and often interesting. She wants her students to succeed and is very easily reachable
She is a very tough grader . Even if you work very hard still u will endup with horrifying grades. Donot take her course , it will bring your cgpa down. She is very awesome in classroom but when it comes to grades , its horrible .
One of the easiest classes I've taken in my 3 years of studies. Sara is awesome and makes class very unique. Course work is not complex and all assignments are about you. Attendance isn't necessarily required, but there are weekly journals that you must complete to get participation marks (super easy). Highly recommend this course.
Sara made reading enjoyable, one or two short readings/week. She made lectures enjoyable and ended class early always. Just make sure to do the readings and DON'T cheat (she told us of many students that were cheating in her other classes all semester and she caught them every time). Sara is funny and cancels classes sometimes.
I really enjoyed Professor Smit's enthusiasm and overall care for not only student success within the class but also with life skills. I found the class helpful and engaging with the topic that were taught. Sara does however tend to average out the class marks during the end of the semester which led to me receiving a lower mark than expected.
Rigged grading. Your grade will be lowered to allow a student who didn't work as hard as you to pass. I guess the concept of merit is lost on a tenured professor. Shockingly disappointing.
Be very careful with this prof! She will send you to the associate dean for anything and every little thing. I did enjoy her class and she taught it well.
It was an interactive and fun class. The grading criteria was clear but also rigid, so one mistake and whole mark is gone for specific part of rubric. But she gives clear instructions on how to do the assignments. There were not any major group assignments or presentations.
She works with according to her mood
I love Sara so much. She is absolutely amazing. Have details, explanations, and example in your assignments, and you will get easy 70s in her class. She is so respectful and entertainment. She made me fall in love with communications in business. Don't use AI generated answers and you will be safe. Don't listen to the negative feedbacks.
WROST professor everrrrrrr I took her in my first semester for ACAD100 and she just ruined my academic report .Very high expectations.Very tough grader. Give alot of readings to do and many group discussions and a presentation. Final paper is very HARD.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS IF YOU WANNA PASS.
Worst Teacher
Don't fall for the rating and please Do not take her course !!!!!!! Sara smit is a tough grader. She will not give you enough grades and your GPA will go down also she will send you to associate dean for slightest suspicion of AI without reading the assignment as she don't care about the efforts a student put in the assignment
Doesn't care about the work the students submit or do.
Sara is a good prof that makes class fun and exciting to attend. However, her grading criteria is very rigid and she will ruthlessly cut marks off for the most subliminal of reasons. If you put a decent amount of effort in her class you will get your mark in the 70s. Very easy class with barely anything but assignments and group participation.
Very arbitrary grading system. I understand her anti-institutional approach to communication but is definitely not a place for a Business: Management Communication class. Better off as a specialized novel, short-story, or poem professor in the English Dept. Whatever you've learned in classes previously, abandon it and dumb down in writing.
So she is a tough grader. She will give you 0 on little mistakes, Does not care about the efforts of the students. Please do not take her class otherwise you'll be stressed throughout the semester. ( mere Punjabi bhen bhrawan nu request hai edi class Na lyo eh choti gi mistake te Dean ko bhej dindi assignment )
she is awesome.
Professor Sara Smit is one of the finest professors I've had the privilege to learn from in BUS 205. She genuinely inspires her students and sets them up for success. She encourages active participation and ensuring everyone feels comfortable asking questions. Her approach significantly reduces stress, even during finals.

Just took her class recently (other negative reviews are 70% true) 1. A lot of presentations and group work (weekly basis) and a final presentation 2. SHE IS A TOUGH GRADER - she expects a lot and marks harshly 3. Her participation mark is unreasonable and does not explain why 4. no textbook + bonus points offered 5. Lots of writing
Prof Smit is kind and funny. She makes you write in class alot. She really wants you to become a better writer and critical thinker. She has zero patience for cheating or showing disrespect to other students during their presentations. Don't use AI or you will be sent to the associate Dean.
Sara is hard marker. I went to office hours and she so help me. I wish I had her for other classes. She a nice teacher who love writing.
The first time she taught this class, the average was a 98%, however, when I was in her second class, it was only a 81% and I got my lowest university grade. Her grading scheme is arbitrary, meaning that if you ask her what else you could have improved on, she would say you were perfect and was awarded a 80%. Very biased and unfair. My worse class.
Would not like to take again.
Do not like to have this.
I really dont like her grading system.
Prof sara is good teacher even tho this subject very hard for me she made me want to try best.
I didnt find this to be a hard class, but I learned alot. I now have more confidence in my presentation skills. Great prof!
Lots of writing gave me hand cramps. Sara hates cheating and chatgpt. Do your own work and you might learn something.
she is the worst i have ever seen as she can not give marks.
This class was hardest for me because English is not my first language but I know more now and Sara gave me the confidence to talk in groups and do final presentation which was so scary at first.
I attended Sara's lecture and it was amazing. I would take her class again.
NEVER EVER EVER TAKE TAKE A CLASS WITH SARA! Do not get me wrong she seems nice, but omg you will get a zero on every single assignment over little mistake. You simply cannot succeed in this class no matter how hard you try. And she will never hear you out or care about what you are saying. She pretty much says “no you get a zero idc”.SAVE YOURSELF
This woman made me want to drop out of school. I am serious save yourself. Every assignment has at least 5 ways you can receive a 0, one mistake you get a 0 and she could not care less. She seems nice but she is horrible. Good luck passing this class even though it is the easiest material you will ever learn.
If sara was not the one teaching this class i would have enjoyed it, lots of presentations that made me more confident. But OMG you will receive a 0 on every assignment, I would never ever recommend this woman to anyone. You will do the assignments put in a lot of work and automatically receive a 0. SAVE YOURSELF Do not let other ratings fool you
This class is very heavy in terms of participation/discussion work. As a student with severe social anxiety, I struggled in this class. However, Sara was very compassionate when I emailed her about my situation. It is clear she truly does care for her students. That being said, follow the assignment instructions to a tee, or you will get a zero.
She's really a tough grader. Better not to take her class if you want to at least pass this course. She doesn't tell anything about assignments and exams. I would recommend to never ever take class. Even after putting so many efforts and time in assignments, she literally gives 0.
this class is like a high school class very easy and kinda fun sara is great at her job and cares about her class if u go and be active one of the best classes
She was nice but also really frustrating to deal with, make sure you read over your assignments clearly or you will get a zero even if you try to talk to her. Also one of my friends continuously tried to reach out to her throughout the course but she never responded even after 3 months. Overall, she gave me and my classmates a frustrating time.
This course was difficult not because of the material, but due to discouraging and inconsistent grading. There was strong emphasis on ways to receive a zero rather than on how to succeed. Even with genuine effort and time invested, grades did not always reflect that work. Future students should proceed with caution and expect very strict grading.
Literally the easiest class I've taken up to date. Everybody complaining about getting zeros just can't follow instructions. Listen and participate in class and group discussions, pay attention to the assignment instructions, and ask questions whenever you are unsure and you will be more than okay. Great class to take in the spring/summer semester.
It's great that being a goofy ritard gets higher marks than reading the material. This course is designed to maintain a certain average so get ready to lose marks for no damm reason.
