She is easily frustrated with students when they don't understand the material. Often it seems as if she does not know the answers to student's questions.
Like watching paint dry...does not address questions clearly.
HORRIBLE. Would you like to spend 10 minutes while the teacher waits to see if the class has questions? Also "You can read the book to study, but some of the stuff might not be covered in the text" WHAT!?!?!
This teacher is absolutely heinous. Every class is more frustrating then the last. She has no idea how to run class and is boring as hell. entire class almost got up and left when she left the room. If you want a class that you will get nothing out of then go for it, for the rest of you don't.
I think i love her
Sara Solnick is a very smart lady. She went to Harvard. Who gives a sh*t. She is the worst teacher I have ever had at UVM. Thinks she is all high and mighty. Not willing to help you out at all. For tests she uses material that she hardly taught in the first place and then grades very unfairly. Good students do bad in her class.
just don't take her, she is unhelpful, rude, uncreative, and her class is crap
I love economics, and I HATED this class. She is a terrible teacher. When you ask questions she gets visibly angry that you don't understand what she's telling you.
no control over the class. tests do not reflect lectures in anyway. probably best study guide is to not take anything she says seriously. avoid her in introductory classes
OMG, I hate the class because of her. She doesn't let people express their own opinion, she gets mad if you argue with her. Test are from the CD that comes w/ book. So is hw. Piece of advice: bring a pillow and pray that your class wont b in williams 301
Her reputation for getting frustrated is entirely unfounded. I have seen her lose patience only with the kids who are basically drooling on themselves. If you never get it and skip and obviously don't do any reading then maybe she will. But why slow down the class for people who won't put in the time.
Not only is the book a better teacher, it also has a better personality. Instant amnesia walking into this class. I swear she breathes sleeping gas. BORING! But I learned there are 137 tiles on the ceiling. ....

Poor.
Unclear, disorganized -- not a good teacher. Although Math 19 is a prereq, you dont use it, so if its offered by another prof, take it, even if you dont have the prereq.
Sara Solnick is the new form of torture for any prisoner. Stats is important and I tried to pay attention but was unsuccessful. I ended up yawning my way into oblivion. She has no basis for creative explanations or guided discovery of information. Utterly despicable teaching style. Never, ever take a class with her.
Unbelievably boring lectures. Weekly homework takes a tremendous amount of time, although you get to do a 2nd assignment if you do poorly and it's worth 40% of your grade overrall. Tests are okay, sometimes tricky and not like the HW. I personally didn't like her, very strict graded extremely hard, sometimes just had it out for ppl.
Solnick is extremely easy. Take her if you want to boost your GPA not if you actually want to learn something. Also if you continue with economics you will feel under-prepared for future economics classes if you take a fundamentals class with her.
Simple class. If you want to boost your GPA, take her. She knows what she is talking about, but she can't explain it for the life of her. I'd say she isn't the best professor in the Economics department at UVM....
Overall, very fair and predictable grading and tests as well as rewards for coming to class and participating. Willing to help if you see her personally, but sometimes condescending and rude to those who ask questions in class. Interesting and fun course, but unfortunately she relates little of the material back to economics.
Game Theory. Interesting topic and overall great class. Two major complaints: she uses a stupid grading method where you can earn or lose points based on games in class (this directly ties to your overall grade) & her lectures couldnt be more boring, definition of monotone. Very nice and Very helpful.
AWFUL LECTURER. Literally everyone in my section of the room would be playing mario kart 10 minutes into class because it was painful to listen to her. Not a hard class, so you can get by with just reading the textbook.
She is an awful professor and even worse as a Department Chair. Not sure why she was ever selected to act in this role. She loses her temper easily, so don't bother going to the department with issues. Thinks highly of herself since she went to Harvard... wish she would have stayed there instead of coming to UVM.
Make sure to bring your computer with you to class because if you have her at 8:30 the most useful thing you can do during class is check facebook. She doesn't explain anything, and gets annoyed when people are confused and ask questions.
She sounds like she has no idea what she's talking about. Very unclear. Freaks out on students for stupid stuff. One of the worst teachers i've ever had.
She is honestly a poor teacher, I don't understand how she made it through college and is not intelligent enough to lecture to a kindergarten class... ok maybe a little harsh but she is a poor lecturer and take 4times as long as she should to convey basic information.
terrible lecturer and homework grader. She grades according to the mood she is in. for a dept chair she is soo unhelpful. She constantly gets ticked off when people ask too many questions. the reason why we ask so much is because of her ability to lecture. Wish that she would listen to you when correcting her. She is very one sided.
Terrible teacher. It's not one of her econ classes, but a discussion class. She talks more than everyone else combined and is always WRONG. She gets off topic on her own and just can't teach the class. She also grades oddly and doesn't appreciate questions. Everyone ion my class wants out and others I know that have taken her classes hated it too.
Gets a bad reputation, but only by those who don't try in her class or don't attend lectures. Go to her office hours, very helpful, reasonable if you are. Ask about her recent research! Has been covered in the media recently, very interesting. Good class if you actually want to take it.
Because of her poor ratings, I was really apprehensive going into this class. However, Professor Solnick has become one of my favorite professors of the semester. She is interesting, funny and knows how to lead an engaging discussion. She is always willing to meet or email about papers and other assignments and she has made me a much better writer.
She is a very unhelpful teacher who gets ticked off when students ask a question. She barely answers the questions in class and is just a rude person. Gets off topic way too much. The only plus was that all her HW is online and all the answers are posted online as well.
She is just so useless as a teacher, and frightfully rude as well. I never know how to approach her becuase shes always in a bad mood. Shes more like a script reader, she goes up to the front and reads what she has planned. If you have a question that can't be answered in numbers or charts, tough she isnt going to help you.
She is the worst professor I have had at the University of Vermont. She is rude, disrespectful, and an awful lecturer. Dont take this class if you have a choice, because this professor sucks.
Sara is a terrible teacher. She's often angry and not happy to be there. Get ready for her to judge your questions because she puts you down if she thinks you have a stupid question. Messy handwriting and terribly organized notes. If you take this class, choose a different professor unless you'd like ECON12 to be your least favorite class.
Solnick is very unhelpful when you have questions in class. She is rude and often has an attitude when students ask genuine questions. Lectures are spent reviewing homework that the class has already completed or reading articles of her choice. Would not recommend.
She is very disrectful to students, especially during exams, regardless of multiple choice when you ask for help or to be more specific for her poorly worded or hard questions (some Q's seem like something out of an AP econ course) she often will tell you "the answer is there", as if you didn't already know that. Overall easy except for her tests.
Professor Solnick is the most disrespectful and belittling professors I've ever experienced. Her behavior towards students is truly shocking, she yelled at a student during our exam, made rude comments like "I don't understand what's so confusing" or "the answers there..." to any students brave enough to ask for help. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS
Professor Solnick's lectures were all over the place the whole semester. It was hard to know when to take notes, and when she explained things a second time, she would go over it faster than the first time, and with even less clarity. DOES A BAD JOB TYING IT BACK TO ECONOMICS. Just a frustrating professor. Very cool course, very bad teacher.
Not sure how she became a professor at this prestigious university. Not at all helpful as a teacher. Not sure she really understands the subject matter herself, either that or she doesn't care.
She is without question the most conceded person I have ever encountered. It's remarkable: I know there is a stigma that Harvard Grads are stuck up but man does she take the cake on that. She is rude and seems to take pleasure in making students feel inadequate. To add insult to injury, her ability to communicate is non existent. Avoid at all costs
Professor solnick is honestly a horrible teacher and I don't feel bad saying it. I do believe she knows what she is talking about but her teaching style is so horrid that I would highly recommend a different Econ012 teacher. Furthermore, professor solnick's lectures are by far the worst I've been in here at Uvm. Administrative board should def fire
As a professor, she does a fairly good job, but as a person, she's very rude. She'll complain about no one actively participating and asking questions but when someone does ask a question, she tells them "you should know that" or when she does answer, responds in a tone that makes you feel stupid.
Solnick takes notes at the speed of light with a sharpie on printer paper and her handwriting is fairly illegible. Often is no help and demeaning when you ask for clarity on questions. If possible, avoid her as a professor.
Her lectures are very long and all over the place. It's hard to take notes and actually understand them because the way she teaches is just very confusing. If you miss a class she is not good at all with helping you catch up. It is a waste to go to her office hours and she is very rude.
Extremely rude and condescending when asked questions, expects you to know stuff after breezing over it. All lectures are done with a sharpie and printer paper which aren't exactly easy to follow. Office hours are very awkward as she tends to talk down to you and imply you are vastly inferior. Tests are not written by her and have odd wording.
Professor Solnick is very disrespectful to her students in her class. For example, if a student was to ask a question she would either ignore it or give unclear feedback with a very annoyed tone. Her notes are god awful. She writes with sharpie on white printer paper with writing that is barely legible. I do not recommend taking this class at all.
Not there for her students, some times will be very rude when a student asks a question. Never actually answers questions just talks about the question. Long boring lectures that don't help at all. Gives hand outs randomly thats 10% of your grade. Don't recommend this professor at all.
Solnick has been, so far, the worst professor I have had at the University. She does not and can not directly answer any questions that her students ask, and if she does have an answer it is in a disgusted tone. She has admitted to many errors on test questions, but did not curve when asked. She doesn't make her own tests and has poor lectures.
She does not like to teach and does not show any interest in helping students. She seems to have some knowledge of Economics but simply cannot teach it. She is pretty darn horrible. Solnick as an Economic Professor is at least as bad as Trump for President. I would not recommend her. She also messed with my grade.
She's the department head so out of all of them she knows her stuff. I learned so much in her class and while some of it is dry (nature of econ) she has those days where she ignites your interest in the class. Very old fashioned and writes class notes on paper, and tests are a HUGE weight of the grade. Homework online though. Great class, loved her
Professor Solnick is actually very nice and well-respected at the University. She is very knowledgeable about Economics and constantly gives worksheets for practice. Her notes are hard to read and she writes very quickly and if you ask her questions she seems kind of annoyed at the "easy" ones. Overall, she's not that bad.
Professor Solnick is an amazing advisor and professor. She is friendly, knowledgable, and helpful. Most importantly, she does an excellent job of breaking down concepts.
Prof Solnick is knowledgeable about the material and moved the class at a pace that fit with the students. She took time to answer all questions, and would review quizzes and homework as throughly as the class wanted. When most of us got a quiz question wrong, she retaught the material and gave a make-up quiz for extra credit.
Solnick makes concepts easy to understand and gives examples that are relevant to our lives. There's weekly online homework and she gives random in class assignments (if you're in class and do it you get full credit--so attendance is important). She can come off as rude/condescending at times though. Overall I'd recommend her for econ 12.
Professor Solnick does not engage with her students and she will mess with your grade. I would not recommend taking her classes.
This class is a cakewalk because of how effective Professor Solnick is at teaching. One of the best professors I've ever had: She is very approachable and can always make sure her students understand the concepts when they ask.
Articulates theoretical concepts with examples that are fascinating and conducive to understanding the broader context. I love the way she writes dust free as she doesn't use blackboard to write.
I found this professor to be quite rude. The class I did with her was online but it was still evident that she had a certain level of disregard for her students. She is an extremely tough grader and doesn't give adequate feedback concerning how you can improve in order to get a better score. I recommend taking this class with a different professor.
Her lectures are quite clear and the class is relatively easy but she is very rude to students.
While clearly an accomplished economist, Professor Solnick falls short as a teacher. Her notes are taken archaically on an overhead projector in sharpie. Additionally, don't miss a term because once it's gone it's gone. No access to notes, rude to students, teaches with a condescending and patronizing manner. I do not recommend to my worst enemy.
This is the worst professor. She doesn't know how to respect students. Maybe she is very esoteric in academic research! This professor is very proud, and she is not willing to teach students at all, already the head of the department. Her ratings are very confusing and illogical. After taking this professor's class, you will definitely regret it
In terms of micro, Professor Solnick uses good examples and knows her stuff. However, whatever positives exist are outweighed by her moody, rude, and condescending interactions with students, outdated and fast note-taking style with no review on terms ever, and her refusal to enter grades into Blackboard. You're better off with another prof.
Prof Solnick is really sensitive and gets offended if you ask for more explanations on a topic. She yells at students and the TA and is very unwilling to help you if you're having any issues. Tests are kind of difficult and the homeworks are pretty hit or miss.
Sara Solnick has displayed a systematic lack of caring and understanding for her students over this semester. While obviously online courses are not ideal, she has actively made this course more difficult since the cancellation of classes. Despite university recommendations, she seems determined to do the opposite to the detriment of her students.
Not a professor I would ever recommend to anyone ever. She never answers students questions in class and treats students as if it is not a crime to understand concepts the first time. Notes are never available outside of class and she writes it on paper and projects it on the board. Overall a very salty professor I do NOT recommend.
Every class she passes out a news article and has you answer a question or two and then will walk around to collect them. One time a student was still writing so she skipped him and walked to the front of the class. He runs up to turn it in a few mins later and she tore it up and screamed at him that it was late and he wouldn't get credit for it.
I found the exams to be difficult. She is definitely smart and knows the material but she isn't the best at giving lectures or teaching in general.
She was really great in person but the class kinda went downhill once it went online (Corona).
Her online teaching isn't teaching. She just has us do worksheets and expects that we teach ourselves everything. Her class makes me sad because you can tell that she hates teaching online. It brings the whole class down. I'm sure she's a great person and maybe even a good teacher in person but online her class was aweful.
Econ is hard, (in general) so I rated professor Solnick pretty high simply because she is good at explaining it. She is not very understanding when it comes to accommodations, and pre-corona all of her lectures were not digital (using the docu-scan) with random in-class assignments. Just don't skip, and be careful what you ask for questions...
Prof Solnick was randomly condescending towards students when asked questions. She is so good at econ that it's kinda hard to learn from her. She speaks really fast when describing complex topics because it is second nature to her. She seems to forget that it's an entry level course and we all have limited knowledge.
Could not care less about her students. Meets once a week and during that one whole hour of class a week, she simply reads answers from a worksheet and gives passive aggressive answers to whoever dares to ask a question during class. Would never ever recommend Mrs. Solnick to another friend to take. I would not stoop to call her a professor. Awful.
Not a huge fan. The class was survivable if you paid attention, but the prof wasn't much help. She was very disrespectful to students on occasion. Lots of easy homework assignments tho which was nice. Micro isn't rocket science so if you get a bad grade its kinda your fault. Still wouldn't recommend her as a professor tho
Horrible professor. Lecture based and there is no enthusiasm for the material. Shocked she is a college level professor.
Actually a good lecturer, explains things in simple ways, makes econ super accessible. Butshe is super passive aggressive, sometimes flat out rude to students. Condescending when you ask questions. You also have to go to class. Miss lecture and ur lost for an entire unit but if you go, stay quiet, and follow her bizarre rules, shes a good lecturer.
i dont think i have ever had a worse professor at uvm. she is rude, a hard grader and judges you when you ask questions. she takes attendance randomly by giving out writing assignments, but even if you are there shell give you a hassle. wouldnt recommend to my worst enemy.
Terrible
Solnick tries to engage the class with questions, but then fails in explanation. Homework only handed out in class. Homework answers often not gone over. Office "hours" was an office hour. Demeaned questions during office hours and frequently said,"well we already went over that in class". No exam review, no notes, no homework or answers. Goodluck
She never helped you with any questions you had. If you didn't understand it the first time she explained it then you're better off asking a different professor for help. Avoid whenever possible.
Not as bad as Salinas, but that's not exactly the best scale. I have no idea why UVM's econ department is so callous and bitter, having Solnick as chair isn't helping the department grow. Many students are switching majors after being belittled by either of them for being interesting in Economics, the rest are transferring. Avoid Solnick, Salinas
I had to turn everything in on time, but yet didn't know my grade all semester because posting my grades on blackboard was "too much work" - direct quote from Solnick. Go study economics at a different school, or at least with a different profressor
Take good notes. She tells you how to do everything that will be on the homework/test--all you have to do is follow instructions. She recognizes when you're not in lecture, and silently judges you. No grades on blackboard makes it tough to know where you are in the class, so just stay on top of things and you won't have to worry.
Had the misfortune of taking her class online during the height of COVID, had to get my vax the day of the midterm, emailed prior, was late about 30 mins, would not give any sort of accommodation, was disrespectful and difficult
Lecture heavy, hard to glean anything whatsoever.
This class has been terrible. I asked her a question that she was simply unable to answer and said, "I don't really know how to explain it".
She's an incredible teacher - explains things very well. She can be a little curt with questions but don't take it personally she's j kind of impatient. Her lectures are full of easy to understand examples. She also takes helpful notes on the projector while she lectures so you get audio and visual teaching.
Undoubtedly the worst professor I've ever had and an even worse person. It blows my mind that they let her teach here. She needs to be fired immediately and I'm convinced she paid some kids to write whatever good reviews are on this page.
Provided lots of content before exams and didn't give time to study the new content before the exams. Class attendance was mandatory, the material is only understandable when in class.
I was continuously confused, and so was she. She is all over the place and does not give clear instructions. I did appreciate her homework every week as I felt like I learned all information there. She has three exams and they equal up to 65% of the grade, with very confusing multiple choice that she has not shown you how to answer.
Wow. Where to start. I have had my fair share of awful professors but Sara Solnick takes first place. I constantly question her intelligence and how she managed to get a college degree in the first place, let alone have her teach the future about economics. No one should be subjected to her teaching or voice. She is the devil in disguise.
Unfriendly
took her in 2020. 3 years later can confirm she was the meanest professor i've dealt with in college. unkind, rude, passive aggressive, not understanding, just not a good teacher. if anyone remembers in 2020 she insulted a kid and ripped their in class credit for being like a second late. just an embarrassment she is still allowed to teach at uvm
She is by far the worst professor I've ever had at UVM. She is extremely rude to her students, not understanding, and just an overall very unhappy person. I've been taught by professors across all departments at UVM and never had a teacher as unhappy as her. Find any other way, don't take microeconomics with her.
Take this course if you want to be tested on material you will never learn in class! The homework is based on the textbook and she never uses the textbook in class to teach, the homework is nothing like the tests ever. She is all over the place and has no organization. Only chance you have at passing the tests is going to her office hours.
Professor Solnick has a very specific teaching style, but if you engage with it, the class can be quite rewarding. Attend lectures, read the textbook, and use tools like Unstuck ai to prepare - it really helped me solidify the concepts.
Worst professor ever. You will not learn principles with her.
