She is a TA right now but will start lectures. Very very smart and very helpful. Best TA i have ever had and one of the best teachers. Dr. Sarah Ball is one of the best bio staff members OSU has right now. And she is just down right hot!
Great teacher! Takes advantage of different technology including clickers, helpful videos, and more. Explains things thoroughly and at a good pace.
Professor Ball was very concise in her lecture presentations and overall not a bad lecturer but she does not work well with students or give help easily. Did not answer questions well and often rushed through topics even when the class was clearly not understanding the topic. Not THE worst but I would not take a class with her again.
Dr. Ball is a very nice teacher, and answers all your questions immediately. She reads off the slides and explains them a little. She does not give a study guide for tests, but some of her questions come from the post-lecture quizzes, clicker questions, and questions at the end of every chapter in the book. And her hair is awesome and perfect!
She's actually awful. She makes no sense, reads off a powerpoint and asks you the most ridiculous questions on exams. You can't even understand them because she tries to make them "tricky" and they just end up being a giant overly wordy paragraph. Terrible lecturer, terrible professor.
I thought that she was a great teacher but, her exams were too complex to take within the 55 minute time constraint.
Very confusing teacher who asks exam questions that are are the tiniest little details. Bad teacher that expects you to know everything. One of the worst teachers i've ever had.
READ THE TEXTBOOK! And do the end of chapter multiple choice problems. Go to office hours, they are helpful. But as others have said, her midterms are very very very difficult. The class/ professr switches halfway through and Dr. Weinstein takes over, he's also very hard. You will learn A LOT, but getting an A is tough. Take a dif. prof if possible
Literally one of the greatest profs EVER! I love biology and I enjoyed the content which is key to taking her class cause its not an easy A. But she is very personable and happy to help. I was placed in a special lab where she "TA"ed the lab and I got to know her very well - which is great for a 600-people class. TAKE THIS CLASS!
I strongly advise not taking this Professor. Office help is use less. Tests are ridicuosly hard. Don't expect a curve. Also the special lab, sea lab is awful.I suggest if you do end up having to take this teacher take the regular lab. This teacher doesn't explain anything in this lab. assignments are graded at random and not on specific due dates.
Dr. Ball's exams are very difficult, but as a teacher she is excellent. She makes coming to class fun and worthwhile, but READ THE TEXTBOOK. My first exam I failed and when I read the book my second exam score went up significantly. Take the Sea Lab opportunity if offered because Dr. Ball teaches it and it replaces regular lab and she is amazing!
Dr. Ball is my favorite professor that I have had so far. Her exams seem pretty difficult but you can do well if you study. She gives you all of the information you need in class, her notes are super detailed. I did not have to look at the book once, I simply read over my notes and got A's and B's on the midterms. Very good at explaining things.
Dr. Ball is great! If you pay attention in class and READ your book, you will do fine. I got A's on her exams, even though they are tricky. You just have to READ the question and STUDY from the book and her notes. Don't let other peoples comments scare you. Put in the work and you'll succeed.:)
Her lectures are interesting, and she takes subjects at the beginning of the semester people are curious about, and starts each day of with a random topic before diving in. Like a brain warm up. She also teaches Sea Lab, and seems to want to help her students, always helps with a smile. Tests are hard to ace. I assume not impossible if you study.
Know the answers to the weekly quizzes because you will probably be asked some of them on the test. HARD CLASS. If you can take bio 1101, do it. If not try to get a different set of professors. Tests are difficult and she does;t really help in office hours. Her questions are always trying to trick you.
average teacher. Went over most things on exams, but not into much detail.
Dr. Ball is a wonderful professor! If you stay up to date with the lecture material (aka read the book before every lecture) then you will do great!
Dr. Ball's lecture notes are very detailed with most of the information on carmen with an exception of some key words being blanked out, making attendance fairly mandatory. Fill in the blanks instead of taking notes solely by hand. Her exams are hard, but her questions are from a bank that you can find after googling a few of her quiz questions.
She is very helpful and friendly.
She is a great professor. Very patient, even if the class itself is very tedious. I think she tries her best to help her students and seems to always keep a very good demeanor. The class it self, the phage lab part 2, that was agonizing at first, but got easier over time.
Lectures were very good and really helped clarify concepts. Her lecture slides were very detailed and easy to follow. She could be a hard professor, but she is very helpful.
Class has a ton of random assignments that you will always end up getting a 7.1410 or some random # on them, Its never over 8 and just brings down your grade. Very annoying class, lectures aren't helpful but there's clicker Q's which force you to go. Final and MTs are like 30% of grade so other stuff hurts grade. Test Q's are based off quizzes.
Super hard, tests are nearly impossible. The test questions are trying to trip you up.
Very tough class. Was in the SEA PHAGES lab so nothing in lecture and lab correlated. Her exams are very hard. It's like she wants you to fail. She words them so you are unsure what she is asking.
Lecture was interesting. Can get away without the book but you'll do a lot better if you use it. Tests were very hard and extremely confusing wording. SEAPHAGES lab was confusing & difficult but GREAT experience if you are microbioMolGen. Just read. Everything. It's manageable but not easy.
Dr. Ball was very passionate about what she was teaching. There were many assignments for this class, and the lab was the SEAPHAGES lab, which required a giant paper and focus on one topic the entire semester. The quizzes and tests were difficult. I spent most of lab not knowing what was going on, but still ended up with an A-
Her tests have a lot of tough questions so it's important to really know the material. You need to read the book. There's clicker questions and group work during lectures to encourage attendance. Other than that, she is very organized and explains the material well. The lab is confusing at first, but after a while it feels like easy points.
She pulls her tests from all of the questions found in the book, so preparing yourself for them isn't too difficult. I didn't think to study them until the final exam (which was a little too late) but wound up getting a B in the class despite the terrible lab (just wasn't for me). She's super nice and likes to keep things interesting.
Biology is a hard subject but Dr Ball presents the material in a way that makes it incredibly easy to understand. If you pay attention in lecture and also STUDY (like I said biology is hard) you will have no problem with this class. She put powerpoint of her lectures online and her lectures are very organized. Highly recommend.
She's very clear and provides detailed lectures that you must fill in blanks. She also uses clickers. Most quiz and exam questions can be found in book and online. Very smart and tries to keep lectures interesting. Highly recommend
Sarah Ball was a great professor. Her lectures were clear and she gave out PowerPoints with blanks in them to fill in as she covered the material in class. She gave out plenty of practice questions, which came from a test bank for the textbook. If possible, get the test bank as a study tool because it really helps. Would definitely recommend.
She was just really interesting and her expectations were clear cut
This class was awful. The SEAPHAGES lab has nothing to do with the lectures at all. I was super excited for bio and she made me hate it. The fill in notes are no help because the exam is way more indepth then the notes. If you don't read you're pretty much screwed. and there was a lot of pointless work for lab in which they graded super hard.
Lecture is very broad Need to know topics inside and out. She tries to trick students. YOU NEED TO READ. She ask questions directly from the book material . Attendance taken with clickers. Sea Phages lab is awful has nothing to do with class. I'm a B student really did not enjoy class. In class activities are easy points but waste of class time.
Dr. Ball is an good teacher. Her curiosity questions keep lecture a little interesting. I hated this class. There is a reason they call it a weed out class. Reading will help you and make sure you review the notes. She leaves blanks in the notes, so attendance is important and there is clicker questions that are basically attendance points.
Dr. Ball is very knowledgable about Biology, but not exactly approachable. Her notes are not very helpful for the test. YOU MUST READ THE BOOK!!!
It was with the SEAphages late. The lab and lecture do not over lap. It is like taking two different course. Lectures are not that helpful. I can read the book and have a better understanding. You have to go to class to get the clicker question points.
Didn't enjoy the class at all. Tests are very tough and made so you fail them. I studied so much and it never showed. But the issue is that there are no good 1113 professors.
Really knows her stuff, and is a good teacher. Her lectures were interesting, but long and took the entire time. Tests were tough, but the test questions are all online on flashcards. If you studied those and the lecture slides the class is very manageable.
Lecture was super boring. Basically explains bare bones of what you'll actually have to know for the tests. Not very helpful. Lab has nothing to do with lecture. Test questions are straight from online and the test bank.
Dr. Ball is extremely helpful if you ask for help. Some students may think she's unapproachable, but she is very specific and helpful if you come to office hours with questions. Very concise in her explanations; she really knows the ins and outs of the information presented in lecture and is always willing to answer questions. Great overall.
Professor Ball was very nice and comprehensive. Her test were pretty tough and she liked to put on tricky question on exams. She highly recommends you to read the book and take notes individually. Honestly, this will help you pass the class.
Dr. Ball was a great professor. She was very insightful with her lectures and very detailed oriented. She does go off of the book. Be prepared to look at it to study. Also use the website EasyNotecards. They have test questions related to the book chapters. Overall, she does a nice job. The SEAPHAGES lab wasnt great but it was somewhat interesting.
Dr. Ball was very good at teaching. She took things at a nice pace and assigned work relevant to the tests. Reading the book is essential to getting a good grade. She uses clickers for class, so skipping class can loose you points.
Not too hard
Pretty good prof. Decent slides really just not a hard class if you pay attention to lectures and learn whats presented. hot.
Dr. Ball was a good professor, but the lecture itself didn't allow for much interaction with her (there were 600+ students). She puts guided notes on Carmen before lectures, and her exams are based solely on lectures. Honestly, the textbook isn't needed if you go to class.
Ball's tests were the easiest things in existence. Make sure you read the book though because she isn't the best at explaining things. All her questions come from an online test bank too. For sure one of the easiest biology professors.
Must come in with an understanding of biology. I came in struggling because I haven't had bio in four years. Reading the book and going through lecture notes is key.
She knows a lot about the subject, for sure. The lab is the worst part- seaphages- and where most the grades for the class come from- prelabs, quizzes, papers. Exams are more application-based than normal classes and will take the full time. Extra credit chances given. Attendance taken through top hat every class.
Goes really fast stay ahead and read the textbook
Her tests were a little difficult (you have to really understand the material in order to do well), but not impossible. Just make sure you read the corresponding textbook sections BEFORE lecture- it's the only way you'll be able to understand the material. Tophat questions each day counted for attendance.
Unless you're already a whiz in biology, you'll want to read the book and review your lecture notes. She was a great teacher, and you'll see repeated questions from the Study Area on MasteringBio on exams. She definitely makes her half of the semester doable and fair, but Dr. Weinstein might make you rethink who you want to take for Bio.
Amazing Professor. Speaks clearly and teaches effectively in lecture. Exams are nothing tricky.
Dr. Ball was a very good professor. Explained everything in class very clearly, and all assignments supplemented the class very well. Exams and homework were very fair. She kept the material very interesting.
Ball is okay, her class isn't exactly mandatory but her notes are fill in the blank so it would be a good idea to go. She also does tophat questions for attendance. Homework is through mastering so you can find it all online. If you can do NOT take the sea phages lab, do the normal one because sea phages is way more work.
I really liked Dr. Ball, she was funny and friendly and made class interesting. She uses TopHat for attendance and it's graded on participation, not correctness, so go to class! Wasn't a huge fan of the types of questions that make up her test, but that's a personal thing. Good choice of professor.
Dr. Ball was a pretty good teacher overall. Tests were not too bad as long as you had a really good grasp on all the material. Most test questions were application ?'s. You'll definitely need to read the book!!! Also, google Easy Notecards, click on Campbell Biology and do the notecards for the chapters covered on the test(s)- they help so so much
The lectures can be very boring. A lot of important material is not on the power points. Overall material is not hard but very detail oriented so you must know all the material very well. Do not take the sea phages lab unless you have an interest in research, it is much more work including a research paper.
Dr. ball is a great professor; however, lectures can be dull and very broad. Overall good, but could perhaps be a bit more animated about the wonderful yet mysterious science that is biology
I wasn't the biggest fan of Dr. Ball's tests. The information covered in lecture seemed elementary compared to the topics tested. Tophat will boost your grade, so go to class. Her lectures are mildly entertaining. Read the book and don't cram for her exams and you'll be fine.
Dr. Ball is a decent professor. Her exams are slightly difficult but other than that she is very cool. Would recommend
In Dr. Ball's offense, I've always hated biology, however, she made me hate it more. Her powerpoints and notes are over topics equivalent to addition, and her tests are derivatives. Lectures are incredibly boring. I would never recommend her to anyone ever. Also not very nice or willing to help. Disappointed.
Don't take the sea-phages lab. You can do her top hat questions outside class if you skip. You have to buy the book for the homework code, but I never actually read her books. Her tests are off her fill in the blank class notes. Tests aren't worth much because she has so many assignments. Overall good experience
Lectures are a must because of top hat and graded in class activities, however other than that don't expect them to help you much. If you want to learn the material you have to read the book several times over. Exams are not weighted and tricky. Mastering homework is tedious but put in the time on it as it can really affect your grade.
Youll take 4 tests, the final is not comprehensive. Attendance is not taken but you do tophat in class to track it. TAs will take the smallest points off for little errors. Prof. Ball doesnt seem to care what the average for tests are, test 2 and the final were difficult. I got a B+ in the class. Do the homework because it is graded. No curve.
Dr. Ball was a pretty good professor. Her lectures could be long and boring at times but she tries to spice it up with in-class activities and TopHat. The homework and exams were pretty easy so long as you read the textbook and pay attention in lecture. Do not take the SEA-Phages lab!
The exams were very hard and Ball didn't care about the averages being so low either. TAs take off points for no reason but doing well in lab is just as important as the exams because there are a lot of points for it. TopHat questions every day so that's kind of your attendance, mastering homework questions were always online. Ball was no help.
Ball was definitely a great professor, but just a forewarning the subject matter and the lecturing can be very dry if you take the long tuesday/thursday class. Her lectures are definitely the most useful thing to understand basic biology, but it is necessary to do work outside of class. Her exams were difficult, but study top hat and mastering.
Definitely not one of my favorite classes because the lectures were not stimulating and the material was explained at its most difficult level. She is seriously intelligent, but does not always explain the information well or in more than one way. Your TA will be your best pal in this class. Make friends and study with them.
I think professor Ball made the lectures as interesting as possible. Her voice was not boring or dry, and she explained concepts with fun facts thrown in there. she made her tests very relevant to lecture material. My advice: do not ever skip reading the textbook. I don't know how you would pass the class without it.
Professor Ball was mediocre at best. She left out a lot of concepts introduced in the textbook that are actually found on exams, so get ready to read. Her exams were tough and more in-depth than your basic definition questions. She wasn't very approachable when you had a question and didn't seem willing to help. TA's were ok, but helpful.
pop quizzes top hat. Fill in the blank slides. Lectures are honestly helpful so highly suggest going to class and paying attention or a lot of studying by yourself later
Dr. Ball is passionate about biology. Overall she does a good job teaching the material, however there were some topics that she could have made easier to understand. It's important to study your notes well for the tests. Midterms are fairly difficult but manageable if you study well. Attend lecture and lab; top hat and lab should boost the grade.
Dr. Ball cares a lot about what she teaches and is always there to help. The real thing that will decide your grade is who you get as a lab TA. Some are really cool and helpful while others take off points for no reason and refuse to help you out. The tests are difficult but fair. Just stay on top of things and you will have no issue passing
Dr. Ball is a very, very genuine professor, and one of the best at OSU Main. She always begins her class answering questions that students may have about almost anything -- doesn't have to be bio related. She is also a very helpful person, taking her time to answer your question and making you understand the concepts behind them. Take her class!!
Despite getting a good grade in this class, I really didn't enjoy it. Her exams are worded in the strangest way, making them much more confusing than they should be. I would only take her if there was no other professor available honestly. One good thing is that she posts her lectures and videos online, so if you miss class, they're available.
Dr. Ball is fantastic! She is great at breaking down difficult concepts, is willing to answer questions, and provides lots of opportunities to earn points outside of (her very fair, if you study) exams. She is very kind, and extremely passionate about Biology, which makes her already interesting lectures even better. Take Bio with her if you can!
Her lectures were boring and miserable. Would have done better watching Khan Academy. Tests and homework were very difficult. In class activities and Tophat were not helpful and wasted a lot of class time. Do not take this professor if you can avoid it.
It is very obvious that Dr. Ball knows a lot about biology. She has very good notes, however they are not very detailed. She gives some opportunities for extra credit and the labs are fairly easy. Be sure to attend class because she relies heavily on TopHat questions.
Sarah Ball explained concepts well, however, she did not go into much detail. Her exams were much harder than any practice problems given or homework assignments. Would recommend reading the book. Lectures were interesting content wise if you enjoy biology. Lots of tophat questions for participation points, so definitely go to lecture.
Dr. Ball is a great professor! Her exams are kind of difficult, however. I thought I understood the content to my best ability, but her questions are highly conceptual. I think it just really depends on your lab section.
Sarah Ball was not that bad in my opinion. I actually thought her teaching style was okay, however, I would zone out. But, this did not hurt my grade as she posts both her notes and lectures online. BUT, my BIGGEST recommendation is to READ THE TEXTBOOK, yes it is dry but it prepares you so well for the exam and is the only reason I got an A.
Dr. Ball is clearly passionate. She is fair with grading, especially since Top Hat isnt graded for accuracy. I had a tough time at the beginning of the class - my TA was a tough grader, I was getting 80s on the midterms. Going through mastering / top hat questions during finals studying helped me a lot, I ended with a 92.57, which she rounded up.
Attend the lecture for TopHat. Exams were very hard and worded weirdly. Her lectures were boring. Spent 15-20 minutes in each lecture explaining curiosity questions which had nothing to do with class. Hw takes lots of time. Try to get a good TA as they grade your lab. Didn't go in depth in concepts so DEFINITELY read the book or you won't pass.
Lots of blanks on ppt, missing one sentence you'll be lost in the following hour. Mastering due once a week routinely, not helpful. No feedback or explanation. Top-Hat questions pop up every 5 minutes, graded for correctness. Lab TA judgy and mean. Why would I waste that time and money, and end up learn everything from Khan academy?
Dr. Ball does not care about her students. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, she took the opportunity to make lectures longer and assign even more homework than usual. Also when I asked her about an inconsistency in her lecture, she got defensive and rude.
Dr. Balls lectures are confusing and badly worded, and she often uses terms in lecture that arent always understood by the students. Make sure to attend lecture to try and get as many TopHat points as you can. DONT take one of the SEA lab sections because theyre highly disorganized and much more work.
Dr. Ball's lectures were mind boggling boring. She sounds normal on 2x speed. When Covid-19 hit she just uploaded lecture recordings from previous semesters and peaced out. Ta's carried the course. Test questions are worded weird and only try to trick you, not test knowledge.
She does not care for her students at all. During the COVID era, she didnt give any extra help with almost no communication, and no one ever knew when anything was due. Her lectures are so boring and not sufficient to do well on the exams. We didnt cover as much as the other classes , so if you are pre-med take another professor!
She did not care about her students in any means. Office hours do not help at all, the way she talks makes it seem like you should already know the information and would not offer any extra help.
Dr. Ball is an intelligent, earnest, and articulate professor. The lectures are easiest learned, however, through carefully reading the textbook and rewatching lecture videos. Attend class for TopHat points. In a class this big, there is little room for grade leniency and flexibility. Develop a relationship with your TA, and know the material.
I hated attending lectures. She speaks SO slowly and assumes students know all terminology. In the SEA-PHAGES lab section, the lab rubrics were simple/vague, unclear on all requirements, but TAs went heavy on the grading. By the end of the semester, I'd leave the lecture running and tune in only to answer TopHat questions. Would not recommend.
Dr. Ball was actually very considerate to me during this pandemic but I would highly discourage you from taking her lecture with the SEA-PHAGE lab. That lab did not match up to lecture at all and felt like an additional class I was taking. Dr. Ball's lectures are pretty boring and the tests are difficult so make sure to read the book.
She is a very nice person but found her lectures to be boring and extended for no reason. Do NOT take SEA-Phages as it is difficult and has nothing to do with what is being taught in lecture (this lab section made this class difficult to enjoy at all(from a non bio major).
Dr. Ball's notes were thorough and her exams were very straightforward. As long as you study and actually do the homework instead of looking up the answers, you will be prepared for the exams. In lecture, she moves at a slow pace which was frustrating because it is a lot easier to get distracted.
She makes everything sound easy in class but in reality her exams get into so much depth that she doesn't cover. Also her lab quizzes were so hard for no reason. Whenever I spoke to her about my grade she said that I would be fine but in reality I wasn't. The class is very slow and she talks very slowly.
I didn't think Dr. Ball was helpful out of class. But paying attention in lecture was pretty much all I did and I got an A. Search mastering Qs because those homework points give a little boost at the end, and review them before the exams too. I didn't read the book bc its more about understanding so pay attention to what she says in lecture.
Dr. Ball is a HORRIBLE professor, her slides are like 10 years old and all she does is read off of them. No engagement, she doesn't make her own questions they are all of the internet because she is stupid. I do not know how she is still a professor.
Sarah hall is definitely one of the worst professors I’ve ever had. She talks so much and so fast in class but the exams, most of the time have nothing to do with what she’s talking about. The exams had questions on there we had never talked about in class nor were they mentioned in the book.
There's not enough characters to explain how bad Dr. Ball is at teaching. Her slides are way too simple for how complex the material and exam questions are structured. If you struggle interpreting questions DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. Instead of testing you on the concepts all the exam questions are practically how you interpret the questions
Don't take 1113 with SEA-PHAGES lab. Adds a lot of unnecessary work, and essentially tacks on an additional 1/2 course of work for no benefit. Ball uses Top Hat which essentially mandates attendance, which is annoying if you plan on only using lecture recordings. Mastering is decent, not too much work but definitely a little bit. Exams are tough.
Material taught in class is not what shows up on exams
If I didn't rewatch lectures, I would be completely lost in this class. Dr. Ball talks at a snail's speed to try to pay attention. Textbook can be useful but not necessary. Become friends with your TA and work hard in labs because they're most of your grade. Tests are similar to tophat application questions and if you are confused it will be hard.
she makes the subject sound so simple and attacks with HARD EXAMS that basically just pray for. UNLIKE CHEM, the exams were hard but if you study study you will do fine. However for bio- recipe to success: study. LUCK, PRAY, PRAY goes on and on and will add extra chapters and squeeze into exams if time left; teaches till even day before exam
Ball is a good professor. Her class is structured very clearly, and if you do the practice problems, the exams are not too difficult. For my lab section, we had a virus group project that accounted for a fair bit of the lab grade. I enjoyed the questions she answered at the beginning of class, although her lectures can get dry at times.
Do not take bio with her if you plan on doing extra work that goes beyond of the actual credit hours rewarded for completing this class. Her SEA PHAGES lab add on a lot of extra work for the same credit you'll receive by doing any basic bio lab. She grades ridiculously hard and will literally take off 0.25 for the worst things ever.
Please do not take bio 1113 with her. The lecture slides are too easy but the exam questions are extremely difficult. The SEA-PHAGES lab comes with a lot of assignments and it has nothing to do with the lecture. Sometimes she makes a bunch of assignments due in same week as the midterm so you do not even have enough time to review for the exam.
Dr. Ball is easily one of the worst professors I have had at Ohio State. Her lectures have absolutely nothing to do with exams, if you go to her for advice she will give you an unclear run-around answer, and is a terrible grader. SEA-Phages lab is a huge time commitment and doesn't relate to exams. She's a terrible professor and super confusing.
Professor Ball's lectures were overall good, however the lectures get extremely boring really fast. It is hard to sit through her lectures without falling asleep. The class grades are mostly based on mastering biology and midterms.
Overall professor Ball does a good job of lecturing and explaining material, but she gives way too many lab assignments and grades them very harshly. The mastering will really boost your grade so make sure to do that and the exams aren't bad if you understand the lectures. A lot of the exam. questions are straight off of mastering.
An amazing lecturer who was very clear in what you needed to know. Tests are multiple choice but at the application level so some can be tricky. I felt like questions were always valued and she's a very approachable teacher. Highly recommend for biology 1113.
Lectures go slow and get pretty boring although she does try to make it interesting sometimes. Exams are relatively easy questions are very similar to tophat and mastering. If you have her as a lab instructor and/or are in the sea-phages lab good luck. She grades very strict and the lab has nothing to do with the lecture.
Nice but boring.
Dr. Ball was good, but not anything special. Her lectures could get very boring at times and became hard to pay attention. She has a ton of lab assignments that are graded very harshly and it felt nearly impossible to get a 100% on one of the assignments.
If you get put in sea phages switch into regular lab ASAP. That is the only hard part about this class because it is unnecessarily difficult and doesn't relate to lecture at all and isnt on exam. Dr Ball is knowledgeable but does not have a lot of resources studying on your own off the notes is it (take good notes in class) - tophats every class
Professor Ball cares about her students and wants everyone to get a good grade. She responds quickly to emails and is flexible with office hours to help her students. Tests are not too difficult as long as you pay attention during lecture and not many assignments outside of class besides lab assignments. Definteily recommend!!
Going into the first test I was confident because I memorized the lecture slides. When the test came, a lot of the questions were on small details she would mention in class that were not on her lecture slides. I would make sure to pay attention to the small details she says and maybe rewatch her lecture videos in preparation for her exams.
While I liked this professor, her lectures were lengthy and sometimes unhelpful. Much of what she discusses is basic while the exams she gives are not. She doesn't put certain assignments in Carmen, which makes it extremely easy to miss them, while only offering up to 50% late credit. You will need to teach yourself a lot on your own time.
Dr. Ball's lectures were honestly a waste of my time. She reads directly off her slides, and when she isn't doing that, she is teaching her students irrelevant information that doesn't apply to the topics being learned.
I felt like she did a good job teaching honestly, her slides were always clear. BUT her tests are much more difficult than what she teaches. Also, the lecture isn't mandatory, but she does TopHat questions for participation in every single class and drops 20 questions at the end. The lab part of this class really was terrible too.
Good professor, attendance is not mandatory but topHat questions in class are a part of your grade. Tests are pretty easy, lab requires a semester long group project but it id pretty easy and doesn't require much work. She posts lectures after class but no live zoom sessions.
Not as bad as people make it seem. Many people don't know how to study for her class but the best way I've found is to WATCH her lecture videos (Put it in 1.6x speed cuz she talks slowly) and take notes on all she says. I never used the book, it was time waster and made things confusing but it could be helpful to some. Lab was a headache though.
Not a very good professor. Compared to other professors, she makes her class unnecessarily difficult. Avoid.
Do not take the Sea-Phages lab -- literally the worst lab you could take. She grades so harshly on small assignments worth like 3 points and treats this class like its worth more than 4 credits. Her tests are on the smallest things she mentions in the lecture so prepare for that. She also giggles when people get the top-hat questions wrong red flag
Dr. Ball always had clear and concise slides and I rewatched her lecture videos at a fast speed to study for tests. I never used the textbook and the class overall was not bad, definitely recommend her.
I enjoyed her lectures, for success in this class do the Pearson Concept Check questions because they appear on the exams always! Lab is sometimes a pain, but overall not bad would take again.
Would strongly recommend not to take solely because of her SEA-PHAGES lab. Much harder than the regular 1113.01 labs and completely unrelated to the class. It's honestly just a headache. Just take another professor and enjoy a better grade given much less work.
She lectures very well and is engaging with the audience, but her exams are over the smallest things she mentions so you need to pay attention. Not as bad as other bio profs, but lab is kinda stressful.
Dr. Ball's lectures were really interesting, and often tied in real life illnesses/events which helped me a lot. Her slides were also very useful and clearly outlined what she wanted us to know. However, the exams were very detailed oriented so make sure to study the slides well. She was also really helpful during office hours with any questions.
Overall, Dr. Ball was a good teacher. Her lectures could be a bit boring, but it seemed she did care about the subject/her students. The exams weren't hard, just super content heavy. However, the SEA-PHAGES lab was so much unnecessary work. Discovering new phages was kinda cool, but the workload outside of class was a lot.
Pretty average teacher. Lectures are very boring as she talks pretty slow and was a struggle to pay attention through a 90 minute lecture. Her lab is different than the normal one and it is a lot more work. Exams are also pretty difficult averages were in the low 70s and 60s. Take the time to work and get all your homework done, you'll be fine.
Dr. Ball is unique in how she comes across as a genuinely kind and caring person who would rather teach to see the success of her students rather than boost her resume. Despite the content of the class being somewhat boring to me, Dr. Ball was able to use her good personality to engage students throughout her time teaching.
We only had her for half the semester. She was engaging and answered random curiosity questions at the beginning of each lecture. But it was definitely a class where you have to teach yourself a lot of the material on your own. Tophat questions during class.
DO NOT TAKE SEA-PHAGES LAB. WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT TAKE SEA-PHAGES LAB. YOU WILL ACTUALLY LOSE YOUR MIND FROM THE AMOUNT OF WORK YOU HAVE TO DO. PLEASE DONT MAKE THE MISTAKE I MADE. DO NOT TAKE SEA-PHAGES. In terms of lecture, meh its not that bad but lab is actually awful.
She is not a respectful professor. She assigns 28 pages plus to read through over the weekend, grades everything for correctness, and doesn't take into account that you have other classes you have to also worry about.
I recommend opting different instructor for Bio 1113, mainly due to seaphages lab. This lab didn't align well with lecture, had a negative impact on my grade, a lot of work. While she delivered strong lectures, the application of knowledge to real-world scenarios were lacking, a concern given the exams focus on such issues. Exam class av.: 60-70s
This class is almost 100% participation based. There is only 1 midterm and it is online and open note (and very easy). Dr. Ball explained how to use the DNA master application for the lab well, and made it very easy to succeed in the class. This class also includes a poster presentation at a real event, meaning it can be put on your resume.
She makes the test so unbelievable hard and basically impossible to do well in her course, she's rude and not helpful whatsoever. Absolutely take the other professor in Bio 1113 if possible to actually learn something. I've never heard anything good from even the TA's about her who have taken her class.
Try and take a different prof if you can. Lectures are kinda boring and masteringbio HW is annoyingly hard. The exams are so difficult and seem like they are designed to make you fail. Worse if you're in SEA-phages lab bc it has nothing to with the material taught in lecture.
I recommend watching Lectures back again and take notes on the tiny things. those are what the exams mostly are about. Exams are VERY hard. Lecture is not mandatory, but top hat questions are used as participation points and only given in lecture. 20 points are dropped. She gives some extra credit, but don't rely on that. She's nice and passionate.
By far the worst professor I've ever had. She will say something 1 time and then have half an exam over that topic. She is very inconsistent with her material.
Love this lady. Super passionate about what she teaches you can tell she thinks its the coolest thing in the world. Exams not too hard like people say. If you know the information, you can easily apply it. you just have to put time into knowing the information.
Complex tests and heavy lab. Don't suggest anyone to take it.
Dr. Ball is super nice and passionate about what she teaches but the exams and HW are so hard and she tests on the tiniest of details. Study EVERYTHING. SEA lab isn't as annoying or hard as people say and it's honestly SO helpful if you go on to take Microbiology. I liked her teaching style and her as a person, I just hated her exams.
Dr. Ball was very difficult and I did not like her. She used TopHat for attendance so you could have done it from home but you can't tell when she posts questions (these were graded for correctness). Hw was hard and confusing. She talks super fast and doesn't post filled in slideshows. Overall she was not good and if you can avoid her, do.
Dr. Ball's lectures don't cover a lot of the material on exams. She posts slides with missing words which is annoying and doesn't post mastering homework on Carmen. Her exams are fair and not too hard but she literally gives you almost no resources to study. Lab is pretty annoying. Overall the class is pretty disorganized but it's not too hard.
TopHat points in every class. The exams are way too hard for the level of class and the exam is designed to trick you. The lectures are mostly her rambling about things that are not included in any of our actual coursework.
her lectures don't include 35% of the material that's on the exams
Take the bio with Dr. Ball if you can! She's very nice and take the phage lab if you can the trad lab is boring and lots of busy work. I had lots of fun taking phage lab with her the workload is okay plus the TA were very accessible outside of class. She also does extra credit!!
I really don't like the way Dr. Ball teaches. Her lectures consist of things that are not necessarily on the exam and her slides are pretty vague. She doesn't give you many study materials and when students asked for more she just made up excuses to not provide us with more resources. The tests are extremely detailed and difficult even w/ studying.
I loved Dr. Ball's class! Her lectures connect real-world applications to the material. Starts each day with a curiosity question and uses mini breaks to help us digest the content. Tests are tough, but with consistent study and office hours, you'll succeed. The lab, focused on phage therapy, builds valuable research skills. Highly recommend!
Professor Ball is quite passionate about the subject, but her class can be a real challenge. Exams are notoriously difficult, so be sure to stay on top of the material and consider using resources like Unstuckstudy to help with study prep. Overall, a tough course, but manageable with dedication.
The exams are barely anything like what is taught in lecture and the questions on exams are way harder than the TopHat questions. Homework is graded by each attempt per question which makes it harder to use as a study tool especially when she doesn't really provide any other study materials.
Exams are awful. Gives no study resources and even though she says "there are resources online" they are extremely unhelpful and time wasting and nothing like exams. Midway through the year she did give us a study guide, but it was not representative of the exam at all. She also has a terrible attitude and gives u sass when answering questions.
Where do we begin. This class has been my most difficult experience at OSU. Small assignments are worth too much of your grade with homework graded for every question without room to learn, TopHat questions and NO study resources given. Very unhelpful and ambiguous teaching style, with impossible exams even if you study!! Do NOT take her class!!!!!
Tests were harder than they needed to be. If you have option to take a different professor, do it.
A difficult course, but I feel that Dr. Ball does a good job at making lectures interesting and explains things well. I would try to avoid the SEA PHAGES lab if you do not want to be doing a lot of time-consuming things for lab, but the skills learned in this are beneficial. Ex) My friend had Dr. Ball and no SEA lab and had way less work.
Sarah Ball makes exams WAYYYY too hard. as long as you do fine in everything else you will end the class with at least a B-. I got a 66%, 54%, and 51% on the three exams we took and ended the class with a B- just because I locked in for everything else. The exams are made very applicational and you don't learn half of it in lecture. Good luck.
A lot of people say this professor is bad I would have to disagree. Exams can be tricky but if you go to lecture, study, and really put in the effort you'll do well. I honestly found the lab to be harder than the actual lecture for this class.
Like most, I struggled with her exams. I did everything she recommended and averaged terribly on them! I would avoid this course if you had the SEA Phages lab. It absolutely had nothing to do with lectures and the TA grading was harsh but Sarah Ball is very nice and passionate. I just wish with the work I put in there was something to show for it.
Dr. Ball is very passionate about what she teaches and is obviously very knowledgable in the subject area. She places a special emphasis on asking analytical and application-based questions on the exams. Use the Mastering hw and the TopHat questions to review; these are often reflective of actual exam questions and prepare you to score well.
She really does enjoy teaching, I do have to give her that, but this class was so incredibley challenging. For lectures she pretty much just read off slides and made tophat questions to go along. AVOID SEAPHAGES LAB AT ALL COSTS!! The lab work was so precise and graded SO strictly. Exams were so so so difficult. Don't take if possible!
Exams aren't going to be simple multiple choice/memorization - neither are most college STEM classes. Use Mastering as a main study tool - she pulls some questions word for word from them on exam. Put the work in as you would for a college class and you'll be good. SEA PHAGE lab is tough but just stay on top of it and ask for help if you need it.
Lecture pros/cons -straight forward -easy to understand : -very dense -speaks very slow (ended up watching lectures 2x speed) -tophat attendance Exams are probably more difficult than other bio professors but despite what everyone says, they are not impossible to study for.Guarantee most complaints are from first year students w/ HS study habits
Take this class if you hate yourself! This was easily one of the hardest classes i've taken. She often times goes too fast. Only thing that was good was she was passionate and loved talking about biology. Despite that, her exams were super duper difficult for an intro biology class. If you can take any other professor under biology 1113, do it.
If you took AP Bio in high school you will be more than fine with Ball. My lab really screwed me over. DO NOT TAKE SEA PHAGES LAB. It isn't necessarily hard but it is EXTREMELY TIME CONSUMING OUTSIDE OF CLASS. The real class itself was very straight forward and fine though. I started studying the day before every midterm and did fine.
Take this class if you want to crash out over a course! I spent all of my time taking this class just to score a 50% on every exam. As someone who spent lots of times studying her class was extremely difficult. I would never take her class or her exam.
Even though the exams were very tough, the overall grade is points and not percentage so it's easy to recover. TopHat questions in lecture for attendance, but graded on participation and not correctness. Lab is a lot of group work and on large project. Dr. Ball is nice and is clear when explaining things in lecture.
She is a great professor. Had her for BIO1113 and if you attend lectures and do the Mastering, there is no reason you shouldn't do well in the class because a lot of concepts and questions come directly from those on exams. She is very receptive to feedback and very good lecturer. Her exams are only "hard" because they are very application based.
Dr. Ball is a good professor. She really knows what she is talking about. She explains topics clearly, manages her time well. However, she can make you feel a bit dumb when asking questions. The three exams are a bit difficult so you really have to know the topics. Lab final is cumulative, but lecture final is not.
She has a passion for the subject but the exams were extremely difficult. I studied the slides and dynamic study modules but most of the material that was on exams aren't discussed in class so the exam are a hit or miss. I highly recommend you take a different Bio lecturer if you have the chance.
worst professor I have had in my three years. lectures BARELY relate to the exams. exams themselves were AWFUL. nothing wrong with difficult exams, but hers were confusing and abnormal for a basic biology course.not inspirational whatsoever. lectures are awful, she is a bit unbearable. If you could have ANY other professor....CHOOSE THEM!!!
Overall, she is a good lecturer, but she is very inconsiderate of her students schedules. She will not allow you to receive extra time on her assignments, if they are due on the date of your exam. Even if asked for an extension at 11:59, she will decline your offer and you will still have to submit your assignment at the start of your Biology Lab.
Bad professor. The first exam average was a low D for my class. She has practice exams, but even after that bad exam, she won't give us those practice exams because "we aren't studying hard enough." However, the book and study material she gave us were nowhere near the difficulty of the exam, and we don't know what to study.
She is the WORST! I have emailed her numerous times asking what I can do to receive a good grade on an exam, she told me that it was my studying habits that were the problem, not her teaching. She will never release practice tests or the previous exams. If I could give her a zero I would. Whatever you do, do NOT take her class!!
Sarah Ball does not set her students up for success. Like many others have stated, there is absolutely nothing wrong with hard exams but many questions have no correlation to what she teaches in class. On top of that she will not provide practice exams that will somewhat prepare you for the actual thing. There needs to be a change on her end.
She was passionate about the material. The exams were very application-based, making studying for exams much more challenging. Top hat was a pretty big chunk of the final grade.
Was very scared to take this class from this rating, but ended up being fine in in class. Dr. Ball gives a lot of resources to use to study like TopHat, Mastering Homework, and Study Guides. SEA-PHAGE lab is hard, but with work and effort it's very doable and it's not as bad as people say it is. This course is easier than AP Bio.
Never have I studied so much for a class and gotten such an underwhelming grade. Biggest problem is for exam, you don't really know what to study. She's very hyprocritical the way every exam's average grade is a D, and then proceeds to blame everyone for having "bad studying habits", it is just very disrespectful to everyone.
Honestly a very good professor with clear expectations of students. Lots of assignments but exams make up a vast majority of the grade but she provides lots of study resources. If you've taken any Biology class in high school, the material is practically identical just with higher expectations and more application based exams.
This is the hardest class that I have ever taken. The tests are structured to be extremely difficult and completely application based. I had to teach myself the material for every single exam. Class never made me feel prepared for an exam. This class took a toll on my mental health.
She did not TEACH. She just read off of the slides… The exams are hard i literally failed like 44/100 on all of them. This class truly impacted my mental health. I was a straight A student and this was just something else. The seaphage lab is truly a lot of work but at least it's interesting and brought my grade up. Like genuinely do not take her.
Avoid Dr. Ball if you can. She is a fine lecturer, but the exams are crazy hard. I studied hard and still did poorly on exams, and so did everyone else in the class. I liked the phage lab because I thought it was interesting, but it is a good amount of work. Not hard, just work.
SEA Phage lab is hard but very doable. Dr. Ball gives many resources to study and even adds a 10% curve to every exam! I was scared for the class but if you study and make time to learn the material you will be fine. Use the study guide, LEARN THE MASTERING AND TOP HAT (Many questions are copied on the test!!), and keep practicing to do well!
AVOID. Exams were extremely hard. There is no curve on exams. The lab was so long. So much homework for a lab. The course took so much of my time and I genuinely felt like the professor did not care about the students.
Take this class if you want to hate yourself. WOW. What a horrible professor. I got 50's on the first two exams and then 70's on the last two and barely got a B-. The Sea-Phages lab was a lot of work every week, although it was nice to get research skills under my belt. That might be the only positive thing I can say about this class. Don't take.
I was nervous about taking this course because of the bad reviews on Dr.Ball but she was perfectly fine. Her lectures just cover the basics and you will need to thoroughly know the material to do well but she gives so many study opportunities and she is always welcoming in her student hours. SEAPHAGES lab is not bad either if you have a good TA.
Very test heavy. The lab was terrible so much homework for a lab. Almost everything from the lab manual was outdated. Would not recommend this professor to anyone. Save your time, tears, stress and just pick another professor!!!
She was an okay professor. She's definitely interested in Biology and enjoyed teaching it, but the midterms were really difficult and contained a lot of application questions. If you do a lot of application questions as practice you'll be fine. Try not to take SEA PHAGES unless ur pre-med or interested in research because it's a LOT of work.
Very knowledgable professor! Gives lots of good examples and is happy to answer any question. A lot of info is covered in lectures so the class got to be very hard to keep up with sometimes. Her exam questions are very difficult and mostly application based. Be prepared to do a lot of work. Not very engaging but definitely not a snooze fest.
Dont take SEA phages lab unless you want to be depressed.
I had Dr. Ball for the first half of 1113 and I found her to be a pretty good professor. She gives lots of extra credit and tophat questions BUT (free points!! a couple lectures get dropped) her exams are DIFFICULT. They are almost strictly application based. However, understand that your final grade will be ~10% higher than your exam average.
Explained concepts well, but class was made up of exams only. Attendance isn't mandatory but there is top hat during lectures. Bio 1113 with her was one of the hardest classes, and I put so much time into studying and was not satisfied with my exam scores EVER. Avoid if you can!!
She was awful. Her lectures are not enough to do well on her exams. She puts confusing answer choices that could very much be correct but then finds an excuse for why a different answer is better. Hardest bio teacher in the department and is hellbent on making introductory bio difficult. seaphages isn't as bad as people claim but some weeks are bad
Her exams are very difficult compared to her lectures, and note templates are terrible. I studied 20+ hours and got a C on the final, which was the average for about all of the exams. However the lab points and tophat help cushion your grade a lot, so as long as you do well on that you will be fine.
-TopHat: in class questions graded for participation, not correctness. Essentially attendance points. She drops a bunch of them off at the end. -Usually weekly quizzes that you get two attempts at -SEA-Phages lab is fun but challenging at times. -Exams are difficult but if you study and apply yourself, you should be fine. -Plenty extra credit
