Professor Bass is a very kind and intelligent teacher. She cares whether or not we understand the concepts, even though there are 300 of us in a class. However, the Chem 101 exams are extremely difficult. If you want to pass, you must attend all mandatory classes, stay on top of reading, and do practice problems.
Very nice, very smart, and cares about her students. However, she makes the exams MUCH harder than they should be for a 100 level class that most freshman have to take even if they aren't majoring in anything remotely related to chemistry.
Bass is great. She cares about her students, she explains well, Carpenter is ruining Bass's reputation.
A really great professor! Explains the concepts really well. Although, the exams are extremelyyyyy difficult. You really have to work extra hard to know beyond the concepts. Plenty of trick questions, so be sure to read carefully, you will have plenty of time during exams.
She is very nice and easy to follow. She thoroughly explains the examples in class and answers questions. I highly reccommend her. In CHEM101/CHEM102: She does NOT write the exams. The exams are poorly written as some questions are above and beyond the skill level that the book has prepped us for other questions are on target.
Chooses not to lecture in favor of just doing in class quizzes. Caring maybe, but its an online course with mandatory graded attendance. Tons of at home work. little in class lecture.
Her lectures are garbage, but graded. You don't leave with any more information than you entered with. She presents problems, and you know them or you don't. They aren't gone over, at least to any depth. Must be trying a different teaching method than in the past. The other reviews do not match my or my classmates experiences.
She hardly lectures. You expected to know a lot on your own. Discussion seems useless too . Bottom line, expect to do lot of work on your own, which is fine, but if you are not going to lecture in class then it defeats the purpose of going to class . Way too much material for 101 level, way more complicated than needs to be. regret taking it.
Her exams are considerably easier than Carpenter's. Know that she's more than willing to help both inside and outside of class. She's more approachable and cares about her students.
The course is very rigorous and demanding as it is but Dr. Bass really cares for all of the students and her office hours are great as she is very friendly and explains things thoroughly. If you don't understand a problem, she will go over it and provides many resources and opportunities to get help. Just make sure to do the ALEKS and don't rush!
Test heavy. Studied super hard still didn't get good test grades. Not Bass's fault. Dr. Carpenter makes the tests and it is definitely not a 101 level course. Dr. Bass is super nice and cares but it's the tests that count. Despite years of student complaints, UMBC does not care enough to figure out what is wrong with the CHEM 101 and 102 class.
Bass SERIOUSLY cares for students. If it were her class exclusively, I think more would pass. Her rep is lowered due to Carpenter. Bass helped me with the course but also w/ IRL issues, and had lots of hope in my ability to improve. This is an extremely rigorous course, and while things can be improved (+I failed), she makes it a bit more bearable.
CHEM101 at UMBC is notoriously a very challenging course, but taking it with Sarah Bass was actually somewhat enjoyable. The course is naturally pretty work heavy, between two different online components, additional practice problems, and very tough exams, but you can always go to Bass for help. Overall, take Bass over anyone else.
tries to get by on smiles. students like her regardless of how much they hate the class. I don't get it. She IS the course guys. Horrible materials and very mandatory. Nothing but graded HW and quizzes. A true weeder course. "there will be no curve!" then when 40% pass.... ok curve. Chem dept. step back and look at yourself. Miserable
Chem101 is an extremely difficult course. Now that Bass has completely taken it over, it has improved. Although difficult, it is possible to pass, just be prepared to dedicate your semester to this class.
CHEM101 has a terrible reputation due to Carpenter. But Dr. Bass is a gem and really cares about her students. She engages with any student with difficulty and thoroughly explains the content. I enjoyed her this summer session. Im bummed she wont be teaching 102!
I had to take this class for my psych B.S. and it was painful. Dr. Bass is nice, but I feel like she would be better if she actually taught instead of giving clicker questions the entire time. The course demands more than your time and money, but your soul. Worship your textbook. Overall, not awful, but would not want her as my professor again.
Dr. Bass saved my grade in CHEM 300. She teaches the lab half in the Fall. The lab sucks and will take a huge chunk of time but is the really easy juxtaposition to the terrible class. She really cares about her students and even tried to help us rectify our problems with the lecture. Go to her office if you have ANY question and you'll be fine.
Dr. Bass is amazing. In a class of 300, she actually cares about each individual and wants everyone to do well in the class. She offered extra credit for every exam and she was available for office hours and other out of class help. She even had occasional sessions on Friday's for extra help as well as online office hours.
The Chemistry Department at UMBC is phenomenal, with people like Prof. Bass here. Her lectures are kept short but straight-to-the-point, and the assignments help us better prepare for the exams better. On top of that, she is extremely generous with extra credit; she basically does not want to see you fail. I would definitely take her class again.
Overall pretty good prof. She gives lots of extra materials to help students. She does not round up. Was stuck with a 89.7 (B). An average professor but very organized.
Pre-corona, she was wonderful! She took the class's feedback, helped us understand the material, cheered us on, listened to us. It made the class easier. Post-corona, she knew it was hard but she also adapted! Yes, the material got harder, but she was accommodating and became a lil more lenient with assignments so that we could learn it thoroughly.
She's a really cool prof. While she wasn't our original professor, she was able to take charge of the class while still ensuring that we were learning despite having two courseloads. Her lectures were information and easy to understand and she's a very nice person who cares about her students.
Super organized and straight to the point. Everything prepares you for the exam
I had more mental breakdowns than I've ever had during my undergrad, and I'll been in college for four years. Most tutors are terrible, don't listen to any of them. But Prof. Bass makes you work hard for the class through hard work, so do those practice problems!
Absolutely Amazing. Accessible anytime. In fall 2020, lectures were pre-recorded due to 727 students being in the class. Prof Bass made the best out of it by having "chem talks" 3 days a week, on the topic of the homework that is due that night. HW is due MWF weekly, but is on Chem101 app/website and not overly hard. Very organized as well.
This class was by no means easy but it was clear that Dr. Bass cared about her students' success, even though there were 700+ of us. It was easy enough to get questions answered through the discussion board and/or during "chem talks", which were optional review sessions she held three times a week. Workload wasn't too bad and the tests were fair.
Chem is not an easy class but she made this so bearable for students! She was very transparent with us and made sure that we were successful in this class!
Dr. Bass is excellent. You can tell she's very passionate about chemistry & genuinely enjoys working with students. She was very accommodating for online school. She extended deadlines, gave EC & dropped low test scores for us. That being said, you still have to work for your grade. Do your homework, study for tests, go to CHEM Talk! She's great!!
Chem 101 was definitely hard but Dr. Bass gave you everything you needed to do well. The chem talks, discussion board, CHEM101 assignments and the discovery all help you for the exam. The practice exams is near identical to the real exams and she tests on application not just facts. Overall a great teacher 10/10!
Dr. Bass was honestly super considerate despite the panoramic. I have never taken chemistry before so this class was insanely difficult for me, but with enough practice problems, taking notes from lectures and the book, and going over practice exams and her 3x a week "Chem Talks" I was able to do well. + She gave extra credit, practice exams, etc.
Listen up, chem 101 can be very challenging especially in this pandemic but Dr Bass was such a great teacher! If you truly go to chem talks and si pass review sessions you will find it is doable! She is very supportive and cares about all her students. One of the best Professor hands down.
Classes started as synchronous, but switched to asynchronous halfway through. We went from having group discussions/labs to doing them completely by ourselves. We were told to talk to our fellow classmates which wasnt very helpful when were all trying to learn new material. Lectures were essentially YouTube videos, but with less explanation.
Took Professor Carpenter's CHEM101 class and failed. Took Professor Bass's class and got a B. 10/10 recommend taking Professor Bass's class. She is the best!
Dr. Bass is nice but I wouldnt take her again unless she was my last option. She focused a lot on cheating instead of teaching and went through so much effort to keep an online class from cheating that she made a lot of mistakes on the quizzes she created. She and Dr. Hamilton created their own periodic table which caused more confusion.
Dr. Bass is very nice but being nice doesnt make a good instructor. The discussion groups werent useful for learning due to other students wanting to rush and people Not working together cohesively. Dr. Bass also teaches concepts and learning strategies which is fine but they arent useful for the quizzes which make up most of the grade.
She taught chem as best she could. Do not rely on her to follow her own syllabus mainly her grading rubric. she completely nulled out any extra credit I earned and refused to bump up my 89.4.
For the ones who are saying CHEM101 is difficult, its not if you read the textbook, do your homework and pay attention to her chem chats. You guys just like to complain when you put no effort in.
Her lectures are not at all helpful (online) and her Chemtalks aren't that useful either. She goes over incredibly easy problems and the hw problems are easy also, but then when you go to take the LCP(exams) they are HARD! I find her to be extremely confusing and I feel like she's genuinely not a quality teacher.
Terrible teacher. Learned nothing from her and shes gives very little time for the exam. 30 minutes we section is fine for the first few exams but should not apply to the multiple step math based problems. Will NEVER recommend her to ANYONE EVER.
Chem 101 was taught by 3 professors (Bass, Hamilton, Carpenter). Dr. Bass is very kind and approachable. Her lectures (CHEM Talk) were practice problems (notes taken ahead of time). Questions about content or tests could be asked on discussion board and answered quickly. Workload was decent but manageable. Answered all questions asked in class
Dr. Bass is truly an amazing person. As a professor, she's okay; I think if the class wasn't online, it would be better. She is approachable and never makes you feel like you're not learning. She knows what is best for the class and goes with that. Plus the CHEM 101 Homework app is amazing and actually makes learning chemistry a lot easier.
Chemistry isn't my strong suit, but thankfully in Dr. Bass's class you get several learning options that are not mandatory: lectures where you can ask chat questions, learning module videos you can go over and over again, textbooks, teaching assistants (?) who run tutoring sessions, and finally groups of peers you get broken into. Really nice lady
If you suck at tests, you're screwed. The 5 exams and then the final are pretty much all that matter. I did horrible for the first few but my grade was saved because I did amazing on the last few and the final (which replaced your lowest exam grade). The chem talks were such a snoozefest and the homeworks were the most helpful in my opinion.
Amazing, down-to-earth professors! Always took the time to explain any questions we had and grading for all assignments was clear. Her lectures were really interesting and helpful and responded fast to emails. Offered extra credit opportunities and really treats you like a human being which is a breath of fresh air :)
Not a lot is required in this class but you need to do a lot of work to pass. It's a tough topic and I think Dr. Bass does a great job of teaching it. She takes time to go over specific questions and gives extra practice and plenty of resources to do well. I would highly recommend attending every Chem Talk you can.
Dr. Bass gives a lot of chances to make up for the quizzes with the crazy amount of extra credit she gave out. The final was very simple and sometimes she would even throw in a free point here and there in the quizzes. My grade went from a D to a B because of all the extra credit and the final. She also responds to emails very quickly.
Worst professor I've taken. CHEM talks were not at all helpful. Lasted at least 30 mins and didn't cover all subjects for the LCPS (exams). Problems on the exams are harder than the homeworks. I've attended tutoring sessions, chem talks, etc. and still got a C in this class. Only take it AT YOUR RISK. She's nice, but I wouldn't recommend.
What really sucks is for one; how the learning checkpoints are constructed. It truly sets limitations on what can be accomplished in the class efficiently. Secondly, you know how normally a class, when your grade is posted on blackboard, the fraction that is next the the 'My Grade' panel, is actually your grade? Well surprise! It's not.
I was explaining that as a matter of a few seconds ago: almost two and a half months into the semester, I am keeping track of my grade on blackboard and what I thought was an A dropped to a merely but futile C. I think that is quite the drastic change, and simply just unacceptable and inexcusable. Seriously!? What kind of professor pulls this?!
I took this class twice and know professor Bass wants her students to succeed. Although the material is hard at times, it's easy to pass her exams as long as you read the chapters & go to lectures. The discovery isn't helpful & some exam questions aren't ones that are gone over in lecture. She's always available for questions and helping students.
I had her when the exams and lectures were online and discussion was initially in person but they allow us to call in. Never met her, but she was very clear and good at explaining during chem chats. Exams matched the homework questions. Should be easy if you know how to take notes
Professor Bass is an incredible Professor! She really cares about how well her students perform, and provides so many resources for help and extra practice, which I found really helpful! The only downside is that the lectures were online, but despite that I found Chem Talk to be very useful.
I got the opportunity to see Dr. Bass in person, even though this class is online and she is very nice. She genuinely cares about whether you pass, and will offer you solutions to help you succeed in the course. Dr. Bass tries to do her best to provide plenty of practice problems. The LCPs can be stressful, SI Pass can help with that. Good luck!
Dr. Bass is an amazing and kind professor. Be ready to work with people in lectures to answer clicker questions. There are graded on correctness, but that is about all that is stressful in the class. She goes over material very well, and is very approachable and accessible after and outside of lectures.
There are four online exams and 1 cumulative in person exam, with 2-3 homework's and reading quizzes a week. She expects you to be familiar with the class content before class; lecture is treated as a review and polling questions are used to apply that knowledge and practice the material. LA's help in discussion, ask questions!
Changed in-class participation to require attendance codes and discussion got changed from being online to paper on the 10th week of the semester. Very uptight for a 100 level class. Annoying. Lots of work. Reverse learning style; you learn the material yourself anyways so there is no incentive to attend class other than a few example problems.
Caring instructor. But with the number of students in CHEM101, there isn't much she can do for individual students. Lots of homework, and online tests that are all or nothing for points. Flipped classroom means a lot of time will be spent outside of class. Lectures were mainly there for practice.
Nice and caring teacher. But, it doesn't make up for the lack of "teaching". Entirely way too uptight for a level 100 class where we don't actually learn anything. You have to teach yourself all the material. Most of the test questions contain problems that weren't even reviewed in class, the textbook, or homework. Mentally draining class.
She doesn't teach at all, whatsoever. You have to teach yourself and then go to lecture so you can get participation points. And all you do in lecture, is complete participation points. Why are we all wasting our time in class and outside of class.
Don't listen to the people who have given low rating's. They're just a bunch of freshman complaining, that think college is going to be easy like high school. Dr. Bass is an amazing professor whose caring but her class is very hard and requires you to be focused and do all your required work and assignments on time. Also STUDY hard before exams.
I wish UMBC offered another 101 chemistry professor, she is awful. she taught nothing during lectures it was just 50 minutes of solving problems even if you did not understand it. her 4 exams were completely different from the practice which makes no sense. she overcomplicates exams questions and makes a 101 class so hard.
bass explains chemistry concepts eloquently and clearly in lecture, in which attendance is graded. Aktiv homework usually takes 30 min-1hr to finish. on average, exams are moderately difficult. only problem is that bass is inaccessible-she can't have office hours.
Great professor, difficult class. Exams reflect hw+discussions and there are always more practice problems on aktiv. Read textbook, watch the lectures, attend class- all will help to learn the content. Only hard work+significant effort will result in a good grade, so be prepared for a challenge! Manageable to do BIOL141 at the same time.
You have to teach the material yourself by watching the prerecorded videos, practice questions on Aktiv homework(has 3 attempts). Make sure you know the concept and how do the math problems before class because the lecture summarizes what you read & are just extra practice questions. Tests were much more difficult than practice questions we learned
You'll have to teach yourself but it's more of a problem with how the curriculum is set up than with the professor herself. Pretty good at explaining the problems we do in class, and ended up rounding up my grade which is great.
while she's inaccessible outside of class, she does walk around the hall during lecture and is willing to answer your questions during and after class as well! the material is hard so you need to put in effort to get a good grade and she's provided a lot of good resources to help you learn so make sure you can self study and do lots of practice!
Great professor. Given the sheer size of the class she really does make an effort to help students. Class content is very straightforward and she was great with communicating any changes in assignments. No office hours but she offers other resources. Lecture was mostly practice problems but she explains stuff if you ask her to.
The format is reversed, you learn outside of class with lecture videos, and then practice during lecture. About halfway through the semester, it becomes more efficient to just skip lecture and study for exams rather than actually actually show up and do a meager 3-4 practice problems PER class. Respect for Bass though, helping about 300 students.
When I originally signed up for this class, plenty of other students granted hearty endorsements to this professor. To my dismay, she decided to run a "flipped classroom" this semester which meant she didn't teach the material in class, just practice. The worst part is the exams, few of the questions are close to the homeworks or practice problems.
I have taken CHEM101 with this professor twice now, to say that she mostly relies on tests to make up the final grade would be an understatement. The exams make up 60 percent of your grade in total, so if you are a lousy test taker, you will fail no matter how well you do on the other assignments given throughout the course.
took in the fall and got a D, retook this past semester got a C. each unit goes by super fast so stay on top of material/each topic or you WILL fall behind. didn't learn much from her and depended on online videos (she provided a lot of resources tho). each exam covered around 15 units each (3 exams)+cumulative gets math-heavy after first exam.
I love her so much; she articulates her class effortlessly and is a great human for chem and life. Stay on top of all the readings, and do and redo all hw and all practice problems you can find; If you are unsure of small things, ask because it will make everything else make sense. Her whole setup was incredible to prepare us for everything.
The professor gives virtually no feedback and the grading is horrendous. I get zero grades on assignments that I didn't know we had that were not on the syllabus. Exactly what this class wants from me is incredibly unclear and I can't find what I need on blackboard.
Please do not sign up for this professor. She gives absolutely no resources to complete her math heavy work other than these stupid and useless TA's. Before exams, the resources and tutoring is very pitiful and very limited, AND she gives us more homework and quizzes right before the exams. This one class takes up so much time.
Gives way too much homework, flipped classroom approach, her lectures usually consist of her reading off of copy-pasted textbook slides and practice problems that are unnecessarily hard (and grades those problems for accuracy).
Attendance is mandatory because we do polling questions in class that count towards your final grade. There is a bit of work (smth due everyday) but a lot of resources to practice the concepts are provided which are super helpful! She also gives the opportunity of a 5% bonus on each exam if students complete the extra credit assignments :)
Professor Bass is great as she takes the time to explain during lecture and will address individual questions. The course is more of the issue. HW and reading quizzes due 3x a week for each. The exams are generally fair and there is extra credit offered but it takes hours to complete. Would recommend to go to Bass over Carpenter for lectures.
I enjoyed Bass more than Carpenter because of her genuine care and love for chemistry. But, it is hard to do well in this class unless you self-study and enjoy math, because this course is extremely math-heavy. The quizzes are just like the practice problems she gives out.
She puts thought and care into her lectures, and knows the subject very well. There's so many resources to help you- videos, practice problems, office hours, please utilize all of it. She will gladly explain things if you have questions. Anyone can pass this class if they just stay on top of things.
Bass is a good teacher! Very well-made slides and great explanations. There is a fair amount of homework, but it's not hard so long as you pay attention in class. Pretty generous with extra credit! and exams are manageable with studying. If you put in the time and effort you will do well. She provides tons of resources and opportunities to succeed!

This class is unnecessarily hard for a chemistry 101 class, even when it is required for most majors and your grade is mainly dependent on exams Just know that this class is a lot of self studying and lectures she just reads off the screen. There are extra credit opportunities for 5% bonuses on exams, but doesn't really help since exams are tough.
Bass is super nice and genuine. She doesn't just read off slides, she explains well, with examples. Reading content isn't too heavy, but lots of assignments each week. Her exams were pretty good: they reflected question styles from assignments. Same with the final which is external: her assignments, notes and exams set you up well for the final.
Bass is a decent professor given a poor curriculum. However, her teaching style is overly fast-paced and lacks depth for true understanding. This course is essentially self-paced due to the heavy reliance on readings and homework assignments from the online textbook, while her lectures are just summarized slides from that same textbook.
Amazing professor. She was very clear in her lectures, and the tests/homework were over material taught in class. The slides and blackboard course materials were helpful and accessible. Very friendly environment and she is very easy to talk to when needed.
Boring boring boring boring boring, takes all the fun out of chemistry, but keeps all the hard stuff. Nothing is fun about this class, just question after question.
Trust me, it gets worse. Her lecture is bad, and she doesn't know how to teach.
If you are a bad test taker you may fail this course. The exams are 60 percent of your grade even if you do well on discussions and homework it's unlikely you will pass. I don't even blame Professor Bass because she is a nice instructor but chem is inherently difficult.
For preface, I took CHEM101 last sem w/Carpenter and failed so I had to retake it this sem w/Bass and I gotta say she is SO MUCH better than Carpenter. I'm honestly confused by the bad reviews from this sem bc she's genuinely so lenient, like she gave us sm bonus/extra credit opportunities through PollE, tokens, etc., which Carpenter doesn't do.
everything was fine until the final. we were only given 50 minutes to answer all 40 questions which i think was not enough time. i felt so pressured and rushed on most of them and couldn't even go back and check my answers. i also didn't get to answer like the last 5-10 questions even tho i knew how to do them bc of the time;(
Great professor, you can tell she puts a lot of time and effort into every aspect of the class. The subject is naturally content heavy, so put the hours in outside of class and you'll do just fine.
lecture attendance was extra cred with pollev. lectures were kinda rushed and not the most helpful. realchem textbook/hw was SO annoying. posted multiple old practice exams for every exam except final. second exam brought me to a B. go to SI PASS/other tutoring, helped more than the lectures. loads of extra cred opportunities.
dr bass is amazing
Chemistry is a hard course on its own so I think that a lot of students blame her for that. HOWEVER Dr. Bass is always willing to help and has great lectures - you just need to come prepared and not be lazy. She teaches in a way that carries off the readings and homework which is super helpful - she tells you exactly what you need to do to succeed
Honestly, Bass wasn't a horrible teacher at all; Chem is just beyond difficult. For a class like this, a more engaging teacher would've been great, but Bass's voice is enchanted with some sort of sleep spell so that wasn't helpful. However, she always made herself availible outside of class, offered plenty of extra credit, and gave us resources.
She's a really good professor. Always answers her emails, her lectures are very good, they give bonus points if you answer pollev questions in lectures, exams are straightforward and REAL chem is super helpful. I reccomend her and would take her class again!
she teaches the content more confusing than it needs to be
dont take lots of work
Chem is very challenging but Dr. Bass does her best to break down complex topics. Her lectures are clear and provide helpful examples, and are thorough without dragging on too long. Attendance is not mandatory but gives bonus points (and I'd highly recommend attending). I found the workload of this class to be the most difficult aspect.
Bass is amazing. She's very clear about how the class is run and provides many extra credit opportunities. Bad reviews are from people who like shortcuts and don't want to put in the effort. There's a lot of material and homework. If you put in the effort and time to understand the material, you'll do well.
Incredible information accessibility for the course. REAL Chem is a pain to use at times but manageable. Lectures are consistently too fast to take notes effectively, but as long as you review you will be fine. Tons of out of class opportunities, very friendly professors.
