WAY too hyper for 8 am... she tries to keep the energy level high, but Calc just isn't an interesting class. Gives ALOT of extra credit though, which helped me get a B. Recommended as long as you don't take the class early.
She is a good teacher and gives alot of examples and extra credit.
Good teacher, she tries to make the class more interesting but its still just math. But she goes over everything and the study guides help alot for the tests.
Awesome Teacher! Made Calc II easy!
Makes a hard class easy, but you have to do the work. Best Math teacher at UNCC so far. Wish I had her for the rest of my math courses. She actually knows how to teach and is quite good at it!
knows how to teach. gives lots of examples.
Very energetic & enthusiastic; makes the class as bearable as possible; very nice and helpful; breaks down the material into easily understandable chunks; always answers questions with ease; never demeans students; sometimes gives help with tests & homework; uses Maple projects though (D-;) Bottom line: great teacher, sign up if at all possible!
The BEST teacher I have had for math at this University. Very helpful, makes math easy. I HIGHLY recommend. Definatly would take her again.
goood stuff
Great Teacher! She has such an understanding of the material that she's able to explain things MUCH more clearly than the book can. I barely even opened the book the entire semester because I was able to learn the material from just her lectures and notes. The workload was high...but it helps you learn the material.
GREAT TEACHER. Clear, Concise, easy to understand. Study Practice Tests and you're set. Quizzes and projects, but they're weighted extremely low.
This Calculus teacher was pretty good. She wasn't the absolute greatest, but she did what she could to help you out and answer any questions that you had. Attendance is not mandatory, but I went anyways and came out with an A.
gone to every class, took notes, turn in all hw and quizzes and still failed with an (F). She doesn't care of you put in the effort. you get what you made in quizzes and tests. No lead ways. I dont recommend taking this teacher.
She gave quizzes (every class) on material before hw was due. Would only give one example of subject material and only if asked. Sample tests were not examples of actual tests. Assigned all hw at beginning of semester and would not adapt as subjects were covered (frequently said: "Did I assign that?"). Usually teach higher level classes not bus cal
Abstract Algebra is already a crazy hard class. Attendance isn't mandatory, but graded weekly homework assignments. Its good because it forces you to not fall behind (you will if you don't do the HW). Gives you half credit for corrections though. Tests are hard, but the reviews she gives out REALLY help. She will ALWAYS be willing to help students!
Very passionate about math. She's very excited to be teaching and really wants her students to do well in the class. She's willing to work with the students but also gives more work than other teachers.
At the beginning of the class everything seemed rather interesting but in time i lost interest in the subject due to the lack of motivation of our teacher. And i do hope she will represent herself better next year.
She is a terrible teacher. Gives no help and doesn't do a good good of explaining the class. I did not enjoy her class.
Don't bother buying the book only the last couple of assignments come from the book, get them from a friend if you can. She makes calc EASY! Easy tests and quizzes. Great teacher just make sure you pay attention and come to class. She gives tons of examples
Lot of extra credit and likes to help her students.
Take her class, She is the most understanding teacher i have ever met. Most of her homework is online, and the book work can be copied on chegg.com. I came late to the final and she was still worked with me. Don't listen to anyone take this class. Not only will you get the grade you deserve but WILL be ready for calculus 2. She is the best take her
Prof. Birdsong is easily the most understanding teacher on campus. She genuinely wants you to pass and succeed. Her understanding of the subject is almost unbelievable as she writes down every formula completely from memory. Weekly homework with multiple easy quizzes. Test's aren't hard unless you don't study. Take her class!
I had taken calculus before this class, so I didn't struggle with any of the concepts. However, I had trouble identifying what she was talking about at times. Her methods were different from how I learned it, but she gave multiple examples, and was more than happy to help, and understand any situation. You'll be alright if you take her.
I took this class because I wanted to learn linear algebra - but unfortunately I did not. She slammed us with daily quizzes, three (long) homeworks per week, projects biweekly, so that we were basically drowning in busy work. Meanwhile in class, she is all over the place - so I learn from the book. More HW here than my engineering classes. Avoid!
I spent hours everyday completing work for this course. Projects take hours to complete. They don't even help you in any way for this class. Homework and quizzes due every week. She really tries to help you though I have to give her credit for that. I would get so lost during the lecture sometimes and would have to go back and look in the book.
Excellent! Best teacher I've had.
Best Math Professor at UNCC. She explains well the material. Tests are easy. She is awesome!
Great professor. clear notes, explain very nice. too much H.W. everyday quizzes. tests are easy but Final Exam is soooooo Hard.
Best teacher ever
I met with her only a few times outside of class, and she wouldn't really help me whenever I met with her.
Too much time with lecture material. No examples.
Birdsong's a good teacher if there was more time for class, but unfortunately her lectures only allow enough time to teach theory and then a couple examples that look nothing like the webwork problems. Probably going to drop and hope for Taylor next semester
Great professor, easy to follow along in lectures. She teaches at a good pace.
I'm very bad at math, and I struggled in this class. She is very sweet, but all notes are handwritten and she writes on the chalkboard the entire class period doing examples. I wish I had someone who was more engaged in the class since math is not easy for me.
Birdsong has a tendency to go pass the time class ends. She answered any question I had and gives some extra credit on tests and at the end of the semester
She is a good math teacher. She will go over everything in textbook. First test is very easy but you will need to attend the all of her classes. There are programing project and those projects are part of your final grade which are very easy to program. Overall I liked her teaching style. She will be there for help you in class as much as she can.
She was a phenomenal math lecturer. She made even the most complex topics seem incredibly easy. Make sure you do your homework (and don't cheat) because that is where you get all your practice.
Awesome professor, probably the best one teaching this class. Made really hard calculus concepts seem simple and is great at clarifying things. If you are bad at math and need to take this class, definitely take it with her.
Birdsong is an EXCELLENT teacher. I argue, better than the Taylor's. She gives extra credit to help out because calc2 is HARD and she cares about her students and their grades. She puts up all her lecture notes and has a ton of other resources available to you including old tests and finals with solutions to help you study. Take her class.
Prof Birdsong was a great teacher. Lectures really helped with tests and webwork, but if you missed one they were always posted online. Lots of notes and at least one webwork set per week. Gives you as many points as she can on tests and cares about the students.
Dr. Birdsong is an amazing professor! She does a great job explaining concepts and is always ready and willing to answer questions. Also offers lots of extra credit opportunities to boost your grade. I've learned so much in her class!
All you have to do to get an A is do your Hawkes homework. Watch the videos, learn from the videos, and take the quizzes online after learning the material and you will not have to go to class. She just reviews the material u learned, but attendance is counted unless u get someone to sign u in each time. DO THE BONUSES. THEY BOOST UR GRADE!
Fairly easy class, just do the homework on Hawkes. Theres many attempts allowed on the online assignments so its Easy to make a 100 on everything
She is an alright person but her tests are fairly hard. Unless you're pretty good at math you will most likely struggle. Be sure to do the extra credit at the end that does wonders
Professor Birdsong was great! She cared about your success in the class and made sure everyone understood the material before moving on. She dropped the lowest test grade and offers extra credit via Hawkes. She gives study guides to all tests including the final that are quite similar to the exam given.
Great professor, awesome person. Really helps you understand, all you have to do is make the effort
Birdsong is a terrible professor. She goes way too fast when teaching and assumes you understand. She is rude and has her favorites. Do not bother asking her for help either you are wasting your time. I made an A in her class, but it wasn't because she was a fantastic teacher. Avoid her!
She is terrible about answering questions, both in class and in office hours. She won't give you a straight forward answer for anything you ask her. Since there are very little resources outside of class it made it significantly harder to understand the material. Would recommend avoiding.
Lots of note taking. She has a rule that makes you write out each problem in the given homework. I feel like I'm in middle school when I have to copy/rewrite questions rather than just answering them.
Her discrete math class is absolutely ridiculous. You'll take notes all class long only to go to the homework COMPLETELY LOST every week. Her favorite word is "lazy" and it shows because she puts no effort into helping you actually understand this material. STRICT grading, unhelpful time consuming homework, and 15 weeks of STRESS. Can't stand her
Notes are nothing like homework, homework is nothing like the tests. She basically admits the book is terrible yet it's where all the homework comes from. Takes her 3+ weeks to grade anything. Constantly acts like it's okay to not understand and struggle but at the same time expects you to master 2 chapters of material in 2 lectures. Don't take
She moves quickly during her lectures, however, is accepting of questions.
They type of person that tries to give you more work and have your grades rely on it when there's something traumatic that happened
She is fast paced but will stop and answer any question. Speaks very clearly and understands your question well. Really knows her stuff in and out and does a great job of giving you the mechanics instead of just feeding you formulas. Would definitely take again!
Lectures are decent, not the worst I've had. Lectures and notes don't prepare you for the homework. Takes forever to grade everything, but if you miss a class she makes sure to update that immediately. After the second test it seemed like she just started rushing through a ton of material. Canvas page is a mess. Wouldn't recommend.
She was okay-ish. Ish being the key word there.
This class isn't hard. But it is very tedious. The homework gets excessively difficult. The book for this class is awful, she even admits it. We are still required to use the textbook. The class goes over the material to an extent. The homework does not prepare you for the tests whatsoever. She takes ages to grade assignments. Not recommended
Class is very difficult but Professor Birdsong makes it manageable. She's not out of touch and gives feedback on every assignment/test (well at least before everything went online due to COVID-19). The test is nothing like the homework you do. The homework is pretty tedious and not very useful. That's my only big gripe about this class.
I was fortunate to take diffeq with Sarah. She is a wonderful woman. Although high level math IS DIFFICULT, she always presents the concepts in a clear and easy to understand way. She is always there for her students and genuinely cares about them. She gives tons of extra credit for those who want to get that A. IF YOU ARE TRYING YOU WILL SUCCEED.
Doesn't really try much to make the material interesting just tells you facts. Homework from the textbook, lots of tedious problems. Only 2 tests made most of the grade, not too difficult though, plenty of opportunity for extra points.
Dr. Birdsong is an amazing lecturer! She explains the concepts clearly and moves slowly enough to make sure everyone is on the same page. 4 "projects" which are basically copy pasta Maple worksheets. She was the only math instructor I had this semester who did *not* allow open note tests, and her tests are on respondus.
literally the worst professor ever, constantly says one thing then contradicters herself , does not fully explain anything . Uses wrong terms and confuses you. DONT NOT TAKE HER CLASSES SHE IS HORRIBLE
She's an ok professor. On the surface, her lectures seem informative, but when you get to the homework and refer back to the lectures, you realize that much of what she talked about isn't anything like the homework. The test prep is also not reflective of what will be seen on the test.
Professor Birdsong is one of the best professors I've had at UNCC. Her class is very well organized and structured. Everything that you need is easily accessible. Her lectures are awesome and get you involved. 45% tests with a 25% final so it is test heavy. But if you do the readings and follow her lectures you will do perfectly fine.
Professor Birdsong's lectures are fast paced but she will slow down if you ask. She knows what she is talking about though and answers questions clearly and thoroughly. 3 Tests and a final (study guides for everything) and 3 short coding projects over the course of the semester (Java or C++)
Birdsong was awesome. Lighthearted and approachable. Knows the material well. Lots of extra credit. Willing to accommodate your circumstances. Diff Eq isn't easy, but she doesn't make it harder than need be. Practice problems from your textbook. Helpful test reviews. 3 Tests & WebWork probably the most tedious aspect but if you study you will pass.
Great professor. As long as you stay on track and do the work you will pass with an A. She takes late work at no penalty!
So much homework and the homeworks are not easy or anything. They take you a while and it's due twice a week. I would take her class again but not for any intense class.
Dr. Birdsong is one of the best math professors I've had at UNCC. She's super helpful and accessible and will always answer questions and give excused absences and extensions if needed. The class has graded attendance, she assigns groups that you work on stuff with but homework (once a week) is individual. Tests are like the homework.
At first, this class was difficult but as the semester progressed I found that she did a great job explaining the material. Tests are kind of hard but she graded pretty easily. I highly recommend this professor.
Professor Birdsong is very good. Her class was structured well with 3 tests, 3 easy projects, and some other grades. She graded somewhat hard but she curved it fairly so the class average was always a B. She was also a good instructor and I was able to learn alot from the lectures. Only problem I had was that she took a while to grade some things.
While I think Professor Birdsong is very nice on a personal level, I started losing all comprehension of the material about halfway through this class. I found that I mainly learned from the textbook, with lectures only serving as practice. There were also about a dozen assignments due the week of finals, so just be aware of that!
The class was structured around an interactive textbook, which was very useful because if you leave class without understanding the material, you can go do the readings and homework and it will help you learn. She was a good teacher in class and was generous with grading, with extra credit being built into tests
Takes a very long time (up to a month) before grading all the homework / tests / projects, and it shows by the amount of homework you receive on a weekly basis. The canvas page is very neatly organized and her notes are very easy to understand. Attendance was mandatory. Responds to emails very fast. Tough class overall.
Dr. Birdsong is great, but the class was rough. It's so much material, but she does a good job of making it digestible. Make sure you have access to the textbook, and don't let the homework catch you off guard.
Dr. Birdsong is great. 1165 with her was great. It was the first time learning new math concepts as an engineer, and she made it very easy to learn. Her lectures are not boring, and keep you engaged should you choose to do so. If you pay attention in class, and do the homework, this class will be easy.
Really nice but does not explain things well
Prof Birdsong is a great person but this class is a nightmare for neurodivergent people. I've never felt more overwhelmed by a class; canvas page is unnecessarily verbose, main 2 txtbooks don't help AT ALL, homework solutions aren't posted until right before the test, weekly hw sets are unrealistic, not enough guidance on what a good proof is, etc.
Professor birdsong is great! She's nice, a fair grader, and a good teacher. Notes are clear. Slow at grading tests tho. Also, the math in this class is easy.
Professor Birdsong is a great professor. if you are having trouble understanding something go to her office hours, she will explain it in more details. Homework once a week, practice quizzes in class before test (which are helpful). Overall a pretty great class and professor.
Dr. Birdsong is super understanding and makes math fun for someone who is not a math person. I highly recommend her!
She has a great passion for geometry. The textbook is required but easy enough to find online.
I took this class for my math minor and because it seemed the most interesting besides MATH 4109, but it was unbearably difficult and tedious. Everything taught in this course is abstract, and grading was so strict.
Great professor, attend class and do her homework assignments and study guides, and the tests will be a breeze. Offers a lot of extra credit on tests and the finals to help you get your grade up. you have to earn your grade by studying but she's extremely clear with what'll be covered and gives you the resources to learn.
Professor Birdsong was very friendly, knowledgeable and even funny. However this course in particular is HARD. It is very abstract, and has you jumping between concepts frequently. Regardless, she navigates it fairly well, I would recommend her for other courses, but maybe just not this course in particular.
Very easy class, the teacher was a light grader and curved the test and exams quite heavily. Homework had extra credit points each week with an online textbook. Would recommend !!
Honestly...TAKE THIS COURSE! if you need it. The material is super easy in itself, but she knows how to make it easier. It's very group activity heavy but its also easy. On the tests she literally gives you a reference sheet....There is extra credit, AND she gives partial credit too. Super sweet and kind I looooove her!!!
her class is easy but its literally not math, we learned about numeration systems, and voting methods, i think i only used my calc for simple addition, she is annoying to listen too but i sat there on my phone and ended with an A, she also is a slow grader and i mean you dont get a test until the day or two before the next one. id take her again
Pretty good professor, never really had problems with her, which says a lot considering how rude a lot of UNCC professors are. We had an easy course so I rarely had to ask for help. She provides plenty of resources and teaches the class pretty well
Such a fun and easy math class. If you like realistic math that isn't super heavy on formulas and complex equations, this class is for you. Professor Birdsong is super sweet and there is lots of extra credit opportunities.
At first I thought she was a bit scatter-brained but as the semester when on, I understood why she teaches the way she does. VERY BIG ON GROUP WORK!! Each month you will have an exam on the unit and you will do well if you take notes and study before each test, even if you're not the best at math.
