Dr. Sarah Coyne is one of the most open-minded professor's I've had. Her lectures are amazing and her tests are low-average difficulty if you attend class and do the review. The hardest part of the class is the first paper as it requires some research, but if you get a head start it's not too bad. You can use the readings as personal study.
Sarah Coyne was an amazing lector, she was able to get and hold attention of the students. She talked about hard topics in a very respectful way, she did not judge the students that had opposing opinions than her. There was not too much reading. There were four essays. The tests were not hard. Overall great class and even better professor.
Sarah Coyne is amazing! I took SFL 200 from her and I absolutely loved it! She respects students' opinions and creates an atmosphere that is welcoming. You will read a lot so get ready. The class only has two major papers the first paper is a little trickier but the second paper is not as hard. You get points for reading so read the material.
Sarah Coyne is by far my favorite professor I have taken a class from! She is very inspiring and cares about all her students so much. She is vulnerable in her lectures and has great insight into difficult topics. The class is a mixture of gospel and scholarly references. I learned so much from this class and highly recommend it.
This class is the best option for fulfilling the eternal families cornerstone class. It is a safe space for people who might not fit the norm at BYU and can be a good experience for anyone willing to learn. The readings don't do much for you except for self-reported reading reports, but they are interesting and worth doing.
Professor Coyne is amazing! Her lectures make you think and draw you closer to Heavenly Father! She cares and wants you to succeed!
Her lectures for this class were really amazing, I love the perspectives she brings to the BYU campus! The only thing I struggled with was how there were very little assignments, so everything was weighed very heavily. The TA's are the ones who grade the papers, meeting with my TA was very helpful for my grade.
Dr. Coyne's lectures are amazing! I found myself looking forward to her classes every week. She clearly shows that she cares about her students in how she teaches. There aren't many assignments so their scores matter, but if you do them you shouldn't have any problems.
Professor Coyne is AMAZING. Usually, I love skipping my classes, but this is the one class I did not want to skip because of how interesting it is. Grading is pretty easy, and tests are open book and open note. I would highly recommend taking a class from Professor Coyne. She will change your perspective and teach you so many new things!
Very accessible and organized resources and lectures.
Shes actually the best! Super smart and really good lectures, I just liked learning.
Professor Coyne was great! There are only 2 semi-large papers and the other 2 assignments were really easy. This covers 2 religion credits and 1 elective credit and she had wonderful lectures. I enjoyed going to class and class was only 2 times a week.
Loved loved loved this class. The syllabus is straight forward. Two double-spaced 7-8 page papers, but one is based on your own family and the other on an interview you conduct. Super interesting, and you learn so much, but you aren't losing your sleep over getting a good grade.
Dr. Coyne does a great job of making a huge class feel interesting and engaging. The assignments were straight forward and the TAs were really helpful (2 papers and 2 shorter assignments, plus tests). I feel like I learned so much that was actually applicable to my life!
Dr. Coyne is the perfect professor for SFL 200. I was dreading taking this class because of issues that I have with my own family. Sarah Coyne made me love every lecture. Her lectures are filled with love, compassion, respect, and the Holy Ghost. Her class helped me to come closer to Christ.
This class was pretty easy, but there are a few writing assignments!
This has been my favorite class I have taken at BYU so far. Her lectures were amazing and her teaching style always brought the spirit. I 100% recommend this class and professor!
This was an awesome class. The material was interesting and engaging and you can tell Dr. Coyne is truly passionate about the things she is teaching. The tests are long, but if you use the study guide to prepare, you should be good. A few papers but if you manage your time they really aren't that bad. Overall, an awesome class! Highly recommend!
Professor Coyne does a great job of tackling the hard topics (from divorce to sex to LGBTQ+ issues to abortion). She presents multiple perspectives, but keeps the focus on Jesus Christ and love for Him and each other. I thoroughly enjoyed her lectures, learned a lot, and felt the Spirit. Highly recommend!
Dr. Coyne is the best religion professor I've had thus far. She takes a very unbiased approach to difficult topics and she is very open about her life experiences. I have never had so many people comment in a class before because she just makes everyone feel comfortable and understood. The workload isn't too bad. I'd definitely take her again.
Genuinely one of my favorite professors ever. She teaches sincerely and with care. She is super respectful of other's opinions in her teaching and she wants to teach what the students need more than what the material says she needs to teach. She's thorough and willing to admit when she doesn't know the answer to a question. Really great class !
Absolutely amazing Professor! Professor Conye is caring, kind, and understanding and really seeks to help students succeed. Beware of the Essays they are surprisingly difficult and graded harshly though her TA's not her. Her lectures and office hours are the best part of the course-- informative and inspirational. Homework is very light and easy.
Professor Coyne is so great! You can tell that she is truly passionate about what she teaches and she is eager to help her students learn. The majority of the class is readings, lectures, and four papers. I learned so much from her and would definitely take the class again!
I LOVE SARAH COYNE! I actually wanted to go to lectures, and learned so much about the gospel and social science! There's a reasonable amount of reading, 2 big papers (but only one of them is difficult), 2 one page write-ups, and 2 tests (if you go to class and review your notes then you should be fine). She's THE BEST person to teach these topics!
SFL 200 was an amazing class. It combined social science with religion. I learned so much from Dr. Coyne and recommend every BYU student take this class. There were four papers but they were pretty straightforward. The reading was really interesting which made it less of a pain to do. Tests are reasonable (there are only two).
Dr. Coyne is an excellent professor who taught incredible lectures. She covers some controversial topics but in an extremely respectful manner. The hardest part of class was that we were only graded by four papers, two tests, and two assignments. So each assignment was heavily weighted, but I really appreciated everything I learned from her.
I loved Professor Coyne. She was really inspirational and I loved how she presented the content. She was really passionate and caring and respected everyone's opinion. She also taught us to respect everyone as well. I would definitely take this class again.
I found lectures to be pretty boring but the class is straightforward and there aren't too many assignments.
Professor Coyne is such an amazing teacher and individual. She shares all the information with such sensitivity and care. She really knows her stuff and cares about it deeply. She loves every student and really wants them to succeed. The papers are a bit of work but start early and meet with the TAs and look at the reviews. She is a amazing!
There's a lot of reading and if you don't go to class you won't do well on the tests. You get what you put into it. My favorite part of the class was hearing Dr. Coyne's personal experiences. She loves what she teaches and cares about her students. The TAs do grade the papers pretty intensely, but they are willing to help if you reach out.
Sarah Coyne is a lovely professor. She loves and cares for her students. She always encouraged us to come visit our office hours if we had any questions or concerns, especially after controversial or troubling lectures. She clearly wants students to understand their divine worth, no matter who they are, the choices they make, or their beliefs.
This class is a lot of reading and most of the test content is taken from the lectures, so while you don't technically have to attend class, you do if you want to do well on the test. That aside, Dr. Coyne's lectures are awesome. There's a good balance of academic and religious material, supplemented by her own experiences with the topics.
Dr. Coyne has great lectures and is very vulnerable with her class. She is very accessible outside of class and makes sure her students know that we can talk to her about personal struggles if needed. There are two papers but very well walked through by the head TA. The only thing is that her tests are pretty difficult and based off of lectures.
Dr. Coyne is amazing! She is very respectful of everyone's questions and opinions. There are a few big papers throughout the semester, but they are interesting to work on. The tests have questions from both the lectures and readings, so while attendance isn't mandatory, it is helpful to go to hear which things she emphasizes.
Dr. Coyne was so helpful this semester. She truly cares about this subject, and put forth a lot of effort in helping us to learn the concepts and principles taught in this class. She was very respectful of other's opinions and gave great insight when questions were asked. There are a few papers that are applicable and helped further understanding.
Dr. Coyne is one of the best professors I've had at byu. She has a genuine love for every student and respect for all backgrounds and life experiences. SFL 200 is a difficult class to teach because it includes many sensitive/controversial/confusing topics. Yet she navigates each discussion with respect and teaches by the Spirit. 10/10 class!
AMAZING!!! She was a phenomenal lecturer, a serious academic, and heartfelt disciple. She truly takes BYU's mission to heart. As long as you try, she'll be on your side. While her essays were brutal for me, she took extra lengths to help me get a top score on them. She does have a decent amount of reading, but it definitely makes you ask questions.
Dr. Coyne is an excellent lecturer and includes many relevant and impactful stories in her teaching. She isn't afraid to talk about controversial or difficult topics but presents them relatively unbiasedly, which was important for the course I took from her. There aren't many assignments in the class, so you have to do well on the papers.
Dr. Coyne is by far one of my favorite professors at BYU. She took the content for Eternal Families and expanded it to teach us about acceptance, answering hard questions, and so much more. Dr. Coyne is very personal and relatable. This class has two main papers, a few side projects, and daily reading. Overall very manageable.
Sarah Coyne is an amazing professor! She discusses complex and confusing topics. She does her best to help us understand these and gives us lots of resources to continue our learning. You can tell she is very passionate about what she teaches and cares for every student. Her class had almost no homework except for daily reading and a few essays.
Professor Coyne is awesome! She is honest and makes her classroom a comfortable place to ask questions and learn about difficult or controversial topics. This class is more focused on research but we still have spiritual conversation and I really enjoyed the class. Exams are difficult, so test prep and time management is really important!
This was a great class and Dr. Coyne is a great professor. Very inclusive and challenges many BYU and church cultural norms in a sensitive, academic way. I learned so much! The only frustrating part was that papers are unnecessarily complicated and graded on very specific things. But if you go to your TA its fine.
Dr. Coyne is a fantastic teacher! I loved the mix of spiritual and scientific teaching during her lectures, it really helped me apply the principles being taught! The hardest part of the class is the papers but she sets very clear criteria for them that is super helpful! I definitely recommend taking a class from her!
The class lectures are very engaging and I learned a lot each time. Professor Coyne explores a lot of different perspectives and is very vulnerable about her personal experiences. The class grade is based on 4 major writing assignments which are graded pretty hard.
Dr. Coyne is someone who understands what it means to be human. She takes her experiences, both good and hard, and turns them into opportunities to show compassion. Her lectures tackle difficult topics in a way that encourages students to really think about what they think. This course only has a few assignments, so do well on them.
Can't recommend this class and this professor enough! Every lecture left me enlightened and thinking deeply. She uses her life experiences to touch the hearts of her students and she truly wants us to succeed. The only assignments are a few big papers, but they were super interesting to write about. Pay attention to lectures and you will do well!
Dr. Coyne is a great professor who really cares about her students. I really enjoyed this class and learned a lot from it. I highly recommend taking SFL200 for Eternal Family credit, especially from Dr. Coyne. The papers can be difficult and there is quite a bit of reading, but Dr. Coyne is very understanding and always willing to help.
Prof. Coyne is great. very conscious of all people and trials, and is super able to relate to people with those tough, specific spiritual struggles. I appreciate the things I learned. shes definitely passionate and likes to connect on a deep level.just a few papers, TAs will walk you through it. recommend for the GE fosho.
Take Dr. Coyne for your eternal families credit, especially if you feel you don't fit in the Church/BYU! She tackles important and controversial topics sensitively and welcomes diverse student opinions and experiences. It's technically 3 credits but I found the workload very doable--straightforward expectations and reasonable tests.
As a lesbian I was nervous about taking this class (I mean The Family: A Proclamation isn't exactly LGBTQ+ positive). However she never said anything that made me feel unwanted, unloved, or uncomfortable. A student was pretty homphobic in class one day. She stopped them, thanked the student for sharing their opinion, and clarified with statistics.
Sarah Coyne is amazing. I recommend this class to everyone. I learned so much. its a relatively easy class, just don't start the papers on the last day.
Sarah Coyne is a great professor! She incorporates a lot of different perspectives into her lectures and values everyone's opinions. There are only a few assignments you have to do throughout the course, so this class does not take a lot of time outside of the lectures. I would highly recommend taking this class.
Dr. Coyne was a really great professor. I had mixed feelings about the class initially because it was a religion class but also there was lots of social science research involved. However, I really enjoyed what I learned from her and the time/energy she put into the lectures. Really recommend!
Amazing class, she really took the time to share her thoughts on certain issues and made clear what is doctrine, vs. principles and practices in the gospel. She was open to comments and listened to students.
I loved this class! I learned many useful things for my current and future family. There is a fairly light work load. Very applicable and no busy work.
Sarah Coyne has become my favorite professor. She has the perspective that is needed at BYU. She takes an unbiased and Christlike approach to some heavy topics, and makes every person feel heard and loved. She has unique experiences that provide real and raw insight into the reality of life many Utah members of the LDS church don't see. TAKE THIS!!
Professor Coyne is an amazing teacher who teaches difficult subjects well. She is very real, and uses lots of real life examples. She genuinely cares about her students as well. 10/10 would recommend.
Put off eternal families until my last semester to take it from Dr. Coyne after being told how amazing she is since freshman year. I think I raised my expectations too much. Not life changing but probably still better than the other options.
Awesome professor, you can tell she is passionate about what she's teaching, and shares a lot of personal and vulnerable experiences which really helped me learn and connect with her. it is a giant lecture hall so grading depends on the TA you get.
This was the greatest class I have ever taken in my life and Professor Sarah Coyne is the greatest professor I have ever learned from. I would highly highly recommend this class even if you don't need it, I would take it again and again.
Sarah Coyne is such a cool person and she is really vulnerable and open with her students! I love her class because she talks about some really difficult topics that are important but not usually discussed in church settings. While there are a couple of big papers, this class was one of my favorites!!
Dr. Coyne is an amazing professor. She's not afraid to address the harder, more sensitive topics that a lot of students have. She shares a lot of personal and vulnerable experiences and it makes her lectures so good. You can tell she cares a lot about her students, even in such a big class. I cannot recommend this class and Dr. Coyne enough.
Professor Coyne is very good at addressing topics that are sensitive with love. She is relatable and uses personal experiences to connect with her students. I highly recommend any of her classes. She will make you think and her assignment rubrics provide detail and allow you to create experiences.
Dr. Coyne is ana amazing professor. Her lectures are really good and combine science and the gospel very well in a powerful way. She cares a lot about her students and is open to all opinions and ideas. She is very good at incorporating comments and different views into class content. Definitely recommend taking Eternal Families from her!
Sarah Coyne has such a way of discussing the hard topics with such ease and compassion. You can tell that she really cares about the things that she teaches, and does it very much by the spirit. Her papers were graded pretty hard, but if you follow the rubric with exactness you can still do very well. Above all, her class was amazing.
I cannot emphasize enough how amazing Dr. Coyne is. Honestly, one of the best professors at BYU. She makes complicated and controversial topics easier to understand, but also has us participate in the "wrestle" of answering some hard questions by ourselves. There was never a day when I wasn't excited to go to class.
She was very vulnerable in her lectures and I appreciated her willingness to share personal experiences because it helped me connect with the material I was learning about.
She is such a great teacher! I love her lectures, they are engaging and eye opening. Most of the assignments are papers, they take time but are fun to work on.
Sarah Coyne is an outstanding professor by far. In Eternal Families SFL there are only 2 papers to write throughout the semester, along with a couple other small writing assignments. The midterm and final are closed book/note, mostly based on lecture slide material, various studies, and textbook readings. Overall a great class!
Dr. Coyne is an amazing teacher. Her lectures are very inclusive and very informative. This class was harder than I was expecting and most of your grade is based on a few 6-8 page papers.
Dr. Coyne is very professional yet loving. She has a deep testimony of the Savior, Jesus Christ, which I found to be very touching and inspirational. I loved taking this course as it included research more than just talks, scriptures, or written documents. I 100% recommend taking this course from Professor Coyne.
I really like how she handles controversial topics. Very educational and increased my understanding toward opposite gender and minorities. I simply did not have much time to complete assignments but they are not hard.
I enjoyed eternal families which is not something I thought I would be able to say. All in all an awesome class and one that I would recommend to anyone that would prefer a more openminded and interesting take on the family.
Dr. Coyne is one of the most amazing professors ever! In my opinion, her SFL eternal families class is way better than the regular religion eternal families classes. Most of the work you do is reading before class and they're great readings! Her TAs were kind of tough graders, but not terrible. Her lectures are super engaging too!
Dr. Coyne is one of the best professors at BYU. I learned so many new and important things about families, and so many practical applications for being a better person/family member of any kind. I was also consistently spiritually uplifted and felt closer to Christ from each lecture. The homework is not hard, the tests a little harder. Take this!
Dr. Coyne's class brought so many new and valuable insights into my daily life. You can tell that she is very intelligent, while at the same time I felt that she was always open to learning something new from her students. I really appreciated her as a professor!
Great! At times political but she addresses hard concepts and the class is relatively easy.
Dr. Coyne is amazing. I am just about to graduate and this is one of my favorite classes I've taken at BYU! If you don't like to feel uncomfortable, don't take this class. If you want to grow and become more empathetic, understanding, and like the Savior DEFINITELY take this class! Her sensitivity, vulnerability, research, and love are amazing!
Dr. Coyne is a very engaging professor. Her classes are exciting to attend. She has the students take anonymous polls in class, and gives a lot of research to illustrate the content. She is kind, courteous, and bold. The tests and papers are pretty involved but the lectures are interesting so it doesn't detract from the overall experience.
Professor Coyne does a great job at presenting the material for this course and is very good at keeping the attention of the students. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone! Some question taking it since it is a "3 credit religion class", but it's worth the extra effort.
Love Dr. Coyne!Very respectful of people on different places in their faith journey and very respectful of the queer community, has a LGTBQ+ panel that's super awesome. There is a fair amount of reading for this class, and you submit a report as to whether or not you've done it at the end of each term. It's a lot of talks from general authorities.
I took Eternal Families from Professor Coyne, and it was just straight up amazing!! She was such a caring and inspirational teacher and always made sure she brought the spirit into class. The assignments were a good balance of interesting, challenging, and easy. Definitely would recommend taking this class at some point while at BYU
I loved this class! The essays were graded harder than I was expecting because it is not just a religion class. Attendance isn't required, but her lectures were seriously what got me up in the mornings. I would suggest taking this class to every single person at BYU, definitely my favorite class I've taken!!!
As a minority within the Sociology department, I felt on comfortable. Professor Coyne was an excellent teacher, my decision to attend BYU was driven by a desire for an education that aligns with LDS doctrine. I couldn't help but notice that she incorporated modern "philosophies of men" when discussing topics such as gender and chastity.
I frequently left Dr. Coyne's class feeling more confused about difficult topics than I did going in. She seems to be a performer and I did not feel the Spirit in her class. I was alarmed by how she'd twist quotes from the brethren to fit her agendas and justify behavior or ideas that contradict Doctrine and the teachings of the First Presidency.
Dr. Coyne repeatedly used social science to undermine The Family Proclamation in very significant ways. Bizarre considering what this class is supposed to be. If your views align with the Proclamation you may be very uncomfortable in this class. She has a charming way of completely silencing opposition to her views.
She taught based on her political views and would undermine the family proclamation. Did not accept opposing views. Extremely hard to sit through an entire class.
Dr. Coyne is amazing at talking about controversial topics in a very loving way. If you are struggling with the church culture in any way this is an amazing class to help you figure out where you stand! She is so kind and very respectful to all people's opinions.
She is absolutely amazing! There were 3 essays and you can meet with the TAs and they will help and guide you! Her lecture were entertaining but you didn't have to attend class. There is an online textbook and several quizzes (open note and book) the exams were also open book and open note. THIS IS FOR THE CLASS SFL210
Professor Coyne was my favorite professor this semester! Lectures are amazing, interesting, and she was very respectful of ALL participation and feedback. The hardest part of this class is the essays, but the TAs are very helpful. Lots of reading but overall, most useful class I have ever taken!
Professor Coyne was my favorite professor this semester! Lectures are amazing and she was very accepting of all participation and feedback. Hardest part is the essays, but TAs are very helpful, and I still did very well. Lots of reading but overall, this class is the most useful class I have ever taken! I think every parent should take this class.
This was Prof Coyne's first time teaching SFL 210, and I thought she was great! She was very caring and conscious of minority groups. I loved the content of this class - everyone needs to know this info about human development! The papers are graded pretty strict, but not bad. The test is open book & notes, but the class average was still 86%.
Highly Highly Recommend Professor Coyne! Very knowledgeable and caring professor!
Dr. Coyne is amazing! She gives very fun and interesting lectures. She posts her slides and all quizzes/tests are open note and open book. There's three hefty papers but that was the only struggle with the class. I would 100% recommend taking Human Development from her!
Professor Coyne is a great professor!! She really cares about what she teaches and includes her personal research and additional sources to support the textbook. She is conscious of students' mental health and works hard to make her class a safe space. Lectures are engaging, but reading the textbook before class is helpful!!
Prof. Coyne is great! Her class and workload was very reasonable and she has some of the most interesting and inspiring lectures I've ever participated in. Absolutely recommend taking classes from her!
Dr. Coyne is an incredible professor. Her lectures are very engaging, and she explains important concepts in a way that feels compelling and inspiring. Her class did have a lot of reading and 3 papers that you had to apply yourself to, but the exams were open book and note! She is an inspiring person who really cares about students.
In my opinion, Prof Coyne's perspective and general attitude--which, yes, is generally less politically conservative than the average BYU student--is healthy, appropriate, and needed for the content at hand. There are certain topics that can't just be dismissed or viewed from one side. The 3 papers are a tad too long, workload is otherwise fine
Dr. Coyne is absolutely amazing! Her lectures are inspiring and super engaging and the three papers for this class were very straightforward. There was lots of reading, but 100% worth it. This was my second class I took from her and I would take another - she's that good! 10/10 would recommend!
This was a pretty easy class which was nice with open note tests online. Professor Coyne had good lectures that were pretty entertaining but not always necessary for the class.
Professor Coyne is a wonderful professor! She is extremely kind and really cares about her students. She is very willing to work with you, and always shares great research opportunities. Class was pretty easy if you just did the work and stayed on top of it.
The essays are graded a little more difficult by the TAs but professor Coyne is such a great teacher and really wants the best for her students and is willing to help everyone.
She is awesome and the assignments are really thought out with guidelines for everything so it is easy to get an A as long as you do the work listed in the syllabus!
Professor Coyne is amazing! We had quite a bit of reading and writing in the class, but I thoroughly enjoyed the class. It was interesting and spiritual. If you're willing to put in the work, I'd highly suggest the class.
What distinguishes Professor Coyne is her commitment to her students' success and well-being. Despite the challenging nature of many topics in human development, she created a classroom environment where everyone feel loved. Professor Coyne's warmth made it easy for students to feel supported throughout the learning process.
Professor Coyne is great! There is a lot of reading required for the class and the TAs grade the papers pretty hard but she offers a lot of extra credit opportunities throughout the semester! You can tell that Professor Coyne genuinely loves what she teaches and wants the best for her students!
Dr. Coyne is great!!!
Professor Coyne gives super interesting and fun lectures that she ties into both the gospel and the reading. There is a lot of reading but if you do it, you will do well on quizzes and tests. The essays are time consuming but not too difficult.
I barely went to Dr. Coyne's class, but when I did go, I enjoyed it. Lectures insightful, but slides are online, and attendance is optional. Exams open book/notes. Essays toughest; meet TAs two weeks prior for guidance, and it will be easy.
I really enjoyed this class with Professor Coyne. I learned so much from her lectures. The homework load was easy to handle if you put in effort. There were some controversial topics that we had to cover, and I think she taught them expertly, with respect and encouragement to reflect on how we felt.
Professor Coyne is amazing!! She is such a down-to-earth person. She gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. There is a textbook and you read a lot from it. Her lectures were always interesting and I loved how she always tied the Gospel into whatever she was teaching.
Sarah Coyne is a very dedicated and loving teacher. She instilled in me a love of human development. I loved how she connected the lectures to her own experience as a mother and to the gospel. I struggled with time management, but if you work ahead, don't write papers day-of, and don't get behind on textbook readings, then you should be good.
Dr. Coyne is one of my very favorite professors at BYU. She is really good at teaching the course content. She is also very respectful, knowledgeable, and compassionate. She ties in amazing spiritual insights into human development. There is a good amount of textbook reading but its very doable. The papers are challenging but TAs can be helpful.
Dr. Coyne is awesome! I always left her lectures feeling uplifted and I learned a lot about human development! The class itself was kind of workload heavy for no reason. There were a lot of textbook readings that weren't due until the end of the semester -- don't procrastinate or that's kind of going to suck for you! 3 essays. It's a great class!
There are a lot of reading materials in this class but they are very interesting. She cares about her students and wants us to succeed. she posts the lecture slides in case you miss a day or want to go back and review. There are a lot of details on the test but she lets you use your notes and slide on them.
Professor Coyne is amazing! She is so kind, willing to help, and inspirational. The class takes work, but is nothing unmanageable. I can not recommend Coyne enough!
I took her SLF 210 class and it was amazing. She is so, so kind and wants to help her students. I genuinely felt like she wanted me to succeed and wasn't indifferent to how I wanted to perform in the class. She sets the gradebook up in such a way that you have a MASSIVE grade boost/cushion with the reading knowledge checks and the EXTRA CREDIT
Dr. Coyne goes above and beyond! She is so authentic, caring, kind, and equitable. She helped me to succeed in her class when I was struggling profusely. She was honest about her faith and journey in a way that enhanced my understanding of myself and others. She also gives numerous extra credit opportunities!
Professor Coyne is one of the most caring and respectful professors I have had. She is so genuine and you can tell that she really cares about the things she teaches. The papers in the class can be a bit frustrating but overall the content of the course is very interesting and she makes it easy to understand.
This professor was amazing in her lectures, the class was interesting. There were many assignments, it felt like busy work.
Professor Coyne is absolutely amazing. Though she can move a little fast through the content, her lectures are full of good content that she explains well. She uses a variety of teaching methods to keep students engaged. She ends nearly every lecture with a great take-away message that ties the content and the gospel together beautifully.
I really liked this class. I took it to fulfill two of my generals, but it got me thinking that I may want to major in the School of Family Life. Sarah Coyne's lectures were very engaging and the class discussions were very interesting. There are weekly quizzes and a few papers, but the Syllabus does a good job explaining everything in detail.
Dr. Coyne's class was fun, informational, and not very hard at all. If you read the textbook, take the quizzes, and start the papers with adequate time to have your TA help you, she totally sets the class up for your success. Dr. Coyne is very genuine, kind, and knowledgeable, but often regurgitates the textbook as lecture. Her testimony is great.
Professor Coyne is very sweet and her lectures are always approached with grace and love for both the subject and her students. If you ever have a problem she is pretty understanding and willing to work with you. She does have TA's grade the essays, which can be a bit tough, but is willing to discuss a grade change if needed.
Attendance isn't mandatory...but you'll need to go to the lectures to get content for the tests. The tests are open note and open lecture slide, but they are still hard.
Professor Sarah Coyne is very educated and passionate about the SFL department. She really is a great professor! This class did cover a lot of material so each lecture was very heavy. The reading for the course was also heavy and would pile up if you were not perfectly on top. Other than that it was honestly great!
I absolutely loved my experience in Dr. Coyne's class! She made learning an enjoyable experience and found ways to incorporate the gospel into every lecture. I felt that she handled tough subjects very maturely, and loved how she incorporated her personal stories into each lecture. I would definitely recommend her as an empathetic teacher!
I absolutely LOVED Dr. Coyne. She is so knowledgeable about Human Development, and you can feel how passionate she is about the subject, and how much she cares. I can tell she puts a lot of effort into making an inclusive and safe class environment. The lectures were engaging, tender, and fun! There are some long papers, but it is an easy class.
I really liked her, but not this class. I did not like the amount of time spent on an online textbook.
Great teacher, there are a lot of assignments but quizzes are open note.
Professor Coyne is amazing! She's very passionate about what she teaches, and showing up to lectures was fun. She clearly teaches, and the quizzes are based off the textbook, so they're pretty easy. The only part that requires a lot of critical thinking are the papers. There are three, but the grading criteria is broken down really nicely.
Great lectures, goes along well with psychology. Papers are graded tough but the rubric is clear.
I loved taking this class from Dr. Coyne. She is a great professor and her lectures were amazing. There are a few papers throughout the course of the class as well as reading and quizzes.
Professor Coyne aims to create a space for everyone to feel like they belong. This class tends to be lecture heavy but Professor Coyne brought some guests for us to ask questions to and interact with and always had interesting research and sources to show us. There is weekly reading for the class and three papers, but it is a doable class.
Dr. Coyne is genuine, and authentic, and brings the lectures to life. She brings the Savior into her teaching, a talent I highly admire. She is willing to work with students and has a very effective curriculum. Assignments for her class are challenging yet reasonable. I truly feel like I learned valuable life lessons from her course!
Professor Coyne is amazing and so kind! I genuinely was very interested in this class! Personally, I did not find the lectures to be too much more helpful in comparison to just the slides on Learning Suite and the info available in the textbook, but I did appreciate how she would tie in spiritual moments into every lecture!
Even though the class material is supposed to cover the whole life span, the professor only really focuses on childhood/adolescent development. You are pretty much responsible for learning the rest on your own.
Dr. Coyne was a super friendly and fun professor. Lectures were always interesting, inspiring, and relatable. The assignments were engaging and all had very clear grading criteria.
Dr. Coyne is a great professor and really cares about her students. Sometimes her lectures moved a little too fast for me but you can go back through the lecture slides. The textbook is interactive which is nice and goes more in dept then some lectures. You are expected to read the textbook to learn more about certain topics.
Sarah Coyne was an amazing professor, you do have to write 3 papers but they are evenly spaced out so it does not feel overwhelming and TA's are extremely helpful. Attendance is not mandatory, the tests, midterms and finals are open book/open note. She is very kind and fun to learn from would 10/10 recommend.
I really loved this professor. Although this class was a little challenging, it was my favorite one that I have taken because of the professor's style of teaching and passion for what she does! I would highly encourage everyone to take this class!
Very interesting lectures and open note tests and quizzes.
Dr. Coyne is wonderful! She is a great person and her lectures are amazing. She does grade pretty toughly on papers, which there are a few of, but her class is worth taking from her.
Prof. Coyne knows her stuff. She does a great job interweaving spirituality into lesson content. There are 3 papers that take up a good chunk of your grade. Just meet with the TAs and you'll be set.
Good teacher that can be pretty flexible. Some of the assignments like the papers were kind of difficult. Stay on top of reading and you will probably be fine.
Professor Coyne is amazing! She makes her lectures really fun and engaging and adds an uplifting spiritual element to each class. I loved this class!!
Dr. Coyne is by far my favorite professor and this was my favorite class! She encouraged students to think deeply and self-reflect. She introduced new or different perspectives while respecting each person. Her passion for her work and the content made it so engaging and interesting. Highly recommend!
Dr. Coyne is a wonderful professor! Her lectures are engaging and insightful. I love how she weaves gospel principles into many of her lectures. Although she was very vocal about her classroom being a safe space, I did not feel comfortable sharing opinions that differed from hers.
I loved taking SFL210 with Dr. Coyne. You have a weekly quiz that goes along with the reading but as long as you read it they are easy. There's 3 papers that the TAs grade kind of hard but you can go into their office hours and get help! Dr. Coyne loves teaching this material and it shows in her lectures.
Professor Coyne makes this class engaging and insightful, seamlessly integrating spiritual principles into the lectures. While the papers can be challenging, the open-note quizzes and tests help balance the workload.
She's so good at explaining concepts and will talk about real-world events. She provides a welcoming and inclusive environment that makes you leave feeling so inspired and loved.
Sarah Coyne is awesome. She teaches in such an engaging way and makes class so entertaining and fun! The homework is always clear, and there are so many TA's available to help with anything you need. This was by far my favorite class this semester.
Such a fantastic professor with such a great teaching style.
I LOVE Professor Coyne! She is so inspirational and has a way of teaching with the spirit. I would take her over and over again. There is a lot of reading and three papers for this class, but every lecture is a treat, and the exams are not too stressful, so they balance out.
We have three big papers throughout the class that are already formatted and you just have to fill in the blanks. The midterm and final are open note (which is amazing!!). The lectures are fun and Dr. Coyne keeps it entertaining and shows funny videos :)
Professor Coyne is amazing! She hands out extra credit like candy on Halloween. You can tell she cares deeply for her students. There are three term papers that make up a chunk of your grade, but if you work with your TA's you'll be fine. Two tests--one midterm and one final. Both open notes, slides, PowerPoint. Brings gospel into teaching.
Dr. Coyne is wonderful! Her lectures are beautiful, Spirit-filled, and you can tell she cares so much about her students. She wants everyone to succeed and to feel seen and heard. This was her 2nd time teaching the course, but it seems like she's taught it for years as it's so well-organized and masterfully presented. Take SFL210 with Dr. Coyne!
Professor Coyne is amazing. She truly loves what she is teaching and is very engaging in her lectures. I found it hard that the majority of questions were case study applications so you really have to know the stages of development but the TA's are so helpful and so is having a study group. Not a hard work load and super fun.
I honestly loved Professor Coyne! She is inspiring and draws in the gospel very well into every topic we talk about. I would recommend anyone to take her class. I definitely would like to take her other courses as well.
Dr Sarah Coyne is a passionate and spiritual lady. She loves what she gets to teach about and I LOVED the way she taught lectures with enthusiasm and incorporated her own life experiences into them as well. There are a few papers and easy weekly homework and quizzes, it was a perfectly challenging yet doable intro class to SFL. Would highly rec.
Professor Coyne is such an amazing professor. She makes the lectures very engaging and incorporates spiritual concepts often. There are a lot of extra credit opportunities. This class is a great class to take!
Sarah Coyne is an AMAZING professor! Her classes are interactive, and her lectures are genuinely so interesting and applicable. Whether this class applies to your major or not, I would 100% recommend taking it. You will learn so much about child development and motherhood. I feel significantly more prepared to be a mother after this course.
I loved Professor Coyne! She is always kind, considerate, and honest, as well as gives many opportunities for extra credit. She is very passionate about what she teaches and I'm always engaged in her lectures. She tackles sensitive topics with love and care, making everyone feel safe and wanted. She ties things well to gospel topics.
I love her lectures! She is amazing and teaches with a spirit.. She is very vulnerable, shares personal experiences, and is very interactive. Her tests are open-note, and if you try, you can do well on them. There are 3 big papers. If you work with your TA, you will do fine. She also has lots of extra credit opportunities.10/10 would recommend!!
Professor Coyne is amazing! Super understanding of her student's needs. Weekly readings and quizzes, but they aren't difficult at all. 3 papers,1 midterm, and final. Her lectures are amazing and you can tell knows what she talking about. Highly recommend taking this class with her, even if it's not a requirement for your major, you won't regret it!
If I could take this class from Dr. Coyne every semester, I probably would. She makes every lecture a joy and is so open to comments and questions (lectures often branch out into discussions). She uses polls, demonstrations/activities, music, and video clips to make the class engaging. Interesting course, and you can do well with minimal effort.
Professor Coyne is a very kind person and she works hard to make her lectures enjoyable. However, her teachings about certain topics do not align with the Family Proclamation and what church leaders have said. It was also bothering how she carefully twisted quotes from church leaders to support these teachings.
Take this class with Dr. Coyne!! She is so amazing and teaches all of the material so well. Very light work load. Twice a week you read a section of the textbook, do a video activity, and then take a quiz. Super super easy. There's three big papers throughout the semester but they aren't too bad.
I loved this class! I did not feel the content was very difficult, but there was a lot of textbook reading. Professor Coyne is very caring of her students and tried to make every lecture engaging. She was also very compassionate when discussing sensitive topics, but did not avoid anything. A lot of extra credit opportunities were provided.
Professor Coyne is an amazing professor and I really enjoyed taking this class from her. The workload was manageable, there were weekly readings and quizzes that were not too difficult. There were three papers that were a little more difficult but the TA's are super helpful and will help you to get a good grade. Take this class from Coyne!
Dr. Coyne really cares about her students and wants them to do well. Her lectures are fun and engaging and the exams are open book/open note. I learned so much from her and would recommend this class to everyone!
Amazing professor! She made hard topics seem easy, and she connected them to our own personal lives. Turned a class for credit into a class that has boosted my understanding of the world around me!
Professor Coyne gives great lectures and had a good balance of papers, reading, quizes and tests. I learned a lot.
She is an amazing teacher, brings the spirit, she is engaging and fun. The class was always interesting and enjoyable. Only two exams and the TA's for the papers help so much.
I love Professor Coyne! She is young, so she is full of energy. She is very passionate about the development of children. My favorite class for sure. There are plenty of extra credit opportunities (even though they don't boost your grade a lot). There are 3 big papers, and they are pretty easy if you give yourself time. Open note quiz's & tests!
Professor Coyne was amazing! You can tell how passionate she is about Human Development and she always finds a way to connect her lessons to the gospel:)
Professor Coyne was so much fun to learn from! She was very good at making lectures easy to comprehend but still feel like you need to be engaged to catch all the details. All coursework is online and easily accessible. She is very kind and I would highly recommend!
She does a great job of teaching the test material and tying the gospel into every lecture. This was my favorite class this semester!! There are two tests (open note, open book, and open slides) and three papers. You can tell she loves her job, she makes class super interactive and fun!! Definitely take this class
This class was my favorite I took this semester. Professor Coyne's lectures and content were very engaging. There were weekly quizzes and readings but not too difficult and 3 papers during the semester, all manageable. Plus lots of extra credit opportunities. I looked forward to this class every week, highly recommend.
Dr. Coyne is an amazing teacher! I loved her class and she made the lectures very interesting. Overall, this class was not very difficult if you attend the lectures and take good notes. The exams were open note and open book which was nice. The essays were challenging, but it wasn't too bad if you plan plenty of time to do them.
Dr. Coyne is an amazing professor! She is so kind and caring towards all of her students and always shows respect for everyone. She talked about deep topics but was so willing to share her own personal experiences to help us better understand. She made the lectures entertaining and fun. Highly recommend taking SFL 210 from Dr. Coyne!
Amazing professor! Her lectures were engaging and she shared a lot of personal experiences which made her more relatable. There were a lot of extra credit opportunities and the exams were open book/open note. There are three papers which have a tough rubric, but they're doable and meeting with the TA is very helpful for them. Loved her!
Professor Coyne is a great professor who really loves her job. She provides lots of extra credit opportunites throughout the semester, so take advantage of those. You can also use notes on the exams which is super nice. Overall an awesome class.
Dr. Coyne is an amazing teacher. Her lectures are very engaging and full of information, you will never be bored. Weekly readings and quizzes aren't too bad because they are open note. She offers lots of extra credit opportunities. There are three papers throughout the semester that can be pretty difficult if you don't work on them in advance.
Professor Coyne is an amazing teacher! She is so kind and respectful. Her lectures are engaging, and she shares lots of personal experiences to make concepts easier to understand. She offers plenty of extra credit opportunities, and the tests are open book and note. She is the best and I would definitely take another class from her!
Dr. Coyne is an incredible professor. Her lectures were very engaging, and she incorporates spirituality into her lectures in a really beautiful way. Expectations were clear, and although it was a decent workload I was so grateful to have taken the class. I would definitely take one from her again.
She was not difficult at all. 3 papers throughout the entire semester, all very doable. Only 2 big exams total. Sitting through lecture was never stressful, but the week we spent on pregnancy/prenatal care made me depressed about motherhood which I have always looked forward to. In general, some topics and the presentation of them left me sour.
Professor Coyne is so good at applying the gospel to human development. She is so vulnerable and understanding. There are 3 big papers but she spaces them out and doesn't leave the last one til last minute! Highly recommend
I loved Professor Coyne, she was always so engaging and made her lectures very interactive. There is a midterm and final, which are both open note and open book, along with 1-2 quizzes each week. There are three papers in this class but they are spaced out and are not too bad! You can do it! You will love this class! Best of luck!
I love her lectures you can tell she really cares for the things she is teaching and the research she conducts. She also engages the class a lot (despite it being a large lecture class) which I enjoyed. The class assignments are weekly chapter readings/quizzes and then there is 2 exams and 3 papers. Overall it was pretty manageable.
This professor is amazing. She makes class so engaging and just makes you love her. Her class is designed so that you can get a good grade if you try.
She is very personable. She emphasizes vulnerability and validation. I always felt that I could trust her and turn to her when I needed. The environment in the class is welcoming and friendly. I loved the lectures as they were engaging and filled with variety. The only hard thing for me was that there were only two exams with heavy material.
I highly Recommend Sarah Coyne! She is such an amazing professor who is very thoughtful and gives amazing lectures. There are 3 essays that you should take seriously, if you don't start them the day of you will be fine. There is a little bit of homework but none of it is super hard. Amazing class and I would 100% take again. I loved Sarah Coyne!
This was by far my favorite class I took this semester. I was always excited to come to class as her lectures were inspirational and engaging. There were three large papers over the semester that seemed daunting but going to the TAs was super helpful to receive feedback. There are weekly quizzes and assignments but they are manageable.
Professor Coyne is so cool. She is a great teacher and takes time to answer everyones questions and concerns. She teaches so well and always ties it back to the gospel. She is AWESOME!!!
Coyne was such an amazing professor. The class was very interesting and really easy. You do have a couple of papers throughout the semester, I recommend starting them early. They do take time. Other than that, the class is really chill. I rarely went to lecture. Tests are easy if you study and take good notes to use on the test! Take this class!
I loved Professor Coyne! Her lectures were very interesting, and she knows so much about the subject. It was awesome to have open textbook and notes for the Midterm and Final as well! Overall would totally recommend taking this class for a social science credit.
Professor Coyne is so nice! I love the way she teaches and her lectures are so engaging!
Professor Coyne is super sweet, and she is inclusive in her lectures! If you keep up on your readings and quizzes you should be fine! It is helpful to go to class as things from the slides are on the test!
I absolutely loved Dr. Coyne. Even in a big lecture hall, she showed she cared about each of us. Recently, she told us it was only her 2nd semester teaching SFL 210, and we were genuinely shocked. She is so knowledgeable and we assumed she'd been teaching for years. Coursework is fair, and lectures are very engaging. Highly recommend Dr. Coyne!!
Dr. Coyne is the best! Her lectures are very engaging and interesting. Her intelligence is incredible, and you can really tell that she is passionate about what she teaches. She is inspiring and does a great job balancing between social science and spiritual topics. I would love to take another class from her.
I love Professor Coyne. The SFL 210 class is an easy GE requirement and is interesting at the same time. All of the quizzes and tests are online and open note and all the answers are in the readings or the lecture slides.
Professor Coyne is the bomb! She always includes spiritually strengthening connections to content and life lessons in her lectures that make this class stand out! Her exams were super reasonable and she allowed notes and slides. Absolutely take from her!
Very knowledgeable and kind! there's 3 large papers throughout the semester; all tests are online and open note. Definitely a lot of content to the class but the reading and lectures cover it all pretty well. She found unique ways to make the lecture engaging. The TAs do all of the grading for papers and such so the feedback level varies a lot
Professor Coyne is so compassionate. I visited her once to get feedback on an essay and she was so empathetic and willing to help. Her lectures included asking question to the students about their opinions and experiences, and occasional interactive activities. Essays were strange, but meeting with a TA helped. Exams were open book and notes.
Professor Coyne was such a kind professor. She was very respectful of sensitive topics and she had amazing spiritual insights related to human development. Her lectures were very engaging and she was understanding about assignments.
Professor Coyne is incredibly passionate about what she teaches and is very caring for all her students. Her lectures were very creative and compelling. All of the tests are open note and open book, even the midterm and final exam. There are three papers that are pretty big but just go to the TAs for help!
Pretty good.
This professor has the most amazing lectures! She is so knowledgeable in her field of study. She makes her test open book for her SFL 210 class. I learned a lot in her class, only about human development, but about how it applies to the gospel. She is a great teacher and I would really recommend.
AMAZING PROFESSOR. I would 100% take her again. She has AMAZING lectures and she is so understanding of everyone's perspectives and is genuinely curious about your answers to her questions. I really feel like I learned SO much for her. She also incorporates the gospel into all her lectures. There are a couple of papers, not too hard though.
I loved this class! Professor Coyne is amazing and her lectures were so interesting. She always incorporates the gospel into the lectures which is cool. There are a few papers that can be tough, but as long as you go meet with the TAs beforehand you will be fine. Quizzes and tests are all open book. I would definitely take this class again.
AMAZING professor. So caring, respectful, and understanding of her students. Class is not hard in my opinion - she prepares you for EVERYTHING so tests are not hard. Exams and weekly quizzes are always open note, so as long as you show up to class and take good notes, you will do very well in the class. I looked forward attending her class.
Dr. Coyne is so kind and understanding. She really wants her students to succeed. Be aware theres a lof ot reading. The lectures add to the reading so SHOW UP. I learned so much about myself and about the world in this class. She also ties a lot to the gospel which is wonderful.
Dr. Coyne is wonderful! She cares so much about her students and teaches very clearly to help them master concepts. There are a variety of learning opportunities, from textbook readings, to papers, to great lectures. Tests are all open note. This was probably the best class I've ever taken.
Professor Coyne creates such a fun classroom environment! This has been one of my favorite classes. The workload is not bad, and the TAs are very helpful for writing the papers.
Sarah Coyne is incredibly intelligent and genuine. I enjoyed her lectures. Did not enjoy the textbook readings as much.
She is great if you read and pay attention you will get all the concepts. she as well makes the class enjoyable.
Professor Coyne is amazing!! She is so kind, fun, and engaging, truly loves and understands human development, loves the gospel, and cares about every student. The assignments were great and i learned so much from them. Attendance wasn't mandatory but i woke up excited to go to her class every day.
This was an amazing class and each lecture was tied back to the gospel as well as the material. The textbook was easy to comprehend and the TAs and Dr. Coyne were always available. There were a lot of quizzes, but not too difficult. I would highly recommend this class, and Sarah Coyne has excellent insights.
The lectures were sooo interesting! The papers were the only stressor in the class, but if you meet with your TA, then they are so manageable.
Professor Coyne is an amazing professor who really loves her class and her students! There are a few big papers, 2 tests, and lots of easy assignments and quizzes. She gives lots of extra credit and everything is open note - including the midterm and final.
Professor Coyne is AMAZING! I have met with her one-on-one, and she is incredible. In every class, she relates the topic to the Gospel and Jesus. There are A LOT of extra credit opportunities, so it is easy to pass. Professor Coyne is great; however, my TA was not the best and graded harshly on the papers, but I LOVED the class.
I loved this class! Professor Coyne was very respectful and professional on hard topics. There are a few essays that were graded harshly by the TA's but it's not a hard class to pass.
Professor Coyne had amazing lectures. They were always engaging and I was able to learn a lot. She takes time to answer everyone's questions, and obviously cares about her students. The class itself is fairly easy: the midterm and final are open note and open book, there are only a few assignments a week, and three large, but easy essays.
Dr. Coyne has been one of my favorite professors. She not only teaches well, but she has amazing, powerful, and fun lectures. She does an amazing job lecturing about even very difficult topics. Definitely not a stressful class, but a VERY good class about life and topics that everyone should know about. TAKE SFL 210 FROM DR. COYNE!!!
Very knowledgeable and passionate about her field of study. is respectful and caring when addressing topics, if you ask her a question she doesn't know the answer to, she looks into it and shares her information the next class period.
This professor is amazing. You can tell she prepares for each lecture. Her content is amazing. Be aware that your grade is mostly made up of three papers but they are graded pretty fairly. There's usually only a chapter to read each week and a quiz to go along with it. Highly recommend taking this class from her!
Dr. Coyne was a great teacher! She's very passionate about human development and she teaches with a heavy spiritual emphasis which was great. All of the tests are open book, open slides, open note which is awesome. Papers are important, but the more effort you put in (reading slides, asking TAs, watching videos), the better your grade will be
This was one of my favorite classes taken at BYU. The quizzes and tests were open book, open note. The essays were graded fairly. Most importantly Dr. Coyne is an amazing teacher. She is very passionate about every topic. She incorporates the gospel into every lesson and you will leave class feeling uplifted!
Professor Coyne was one of my favorite professors! The lectures were always super fun and engaging. All of the quizzes and test are open textbook and open notes, even the finals! She always tied in the gospel into every lesson. I would leave class feeling emotional from the spirit that was felt, and I left wanting to make a difference.
10/10 would recommend :)
I loved going to her lectures because she always had fun and interesting things to share. When I was in class, it helped later when I had to read the textbook because the lectures were more in-depth on some topics than the textbook was. I had a lot of fun in this class and would definitely recommend taking it from her!
She is incredible and cares so much about her students and what she teaches! A little bit of work with three essays but the essays were so fun and were graded lightly. If you're not careful, she'll be so passionate that you'll want to change your major to something in the School of Family Life.
Good enough class, but the reading quizzes are ridiculous and oftentimes directly contradict the information in the textbook. TAs are tough graders and will dock points on the essays if you don't spell out exactly what they want to hear in the way they want to hear it. Tests likewise require you to select from several technically correct options.
She is the sweetest professor and genuinely wants you to be successful. I struggled with getting the large papers in on time, but overall for what this class is, she taught it so well. I learned a lot and couldʻve gotten a better grade if I had submitted more things on time.
Professor Coyne was an amazing professor! She incorporated the gospel of Jesus Christ into every lecture and taught by the Spirit. I super appreciate how she used her own life experiences to teach. She is hilarious, open minded, and very intelligent. It was difficult enough but very doable with some study and preparation. It was ALL open book too!
I absolutely loved this class and professor. Her lectures were engaging and she was very creative with how she presented the material. There were only 3 big papers, 1 midterm, and a final exam with weekly reading quizzes. Overall would recommend and take her again!
Dr. Coyne is really sweet, and she cares a lot about what she teaches. There are 1-2 reading quizzes per week, but they're open note and 2 attempts, so they're not hard. I never read the textbook. Tests are open-note too. The hardest part of the class are the 3 papers, and as long as you follow the rubric and talk to your TA, you'll be fine.
Professor Coyne was awesome! She shares amazing experiences and stories in all of her lectures. Very real with you and great at answering questions despite large class size. Grade tougher on papers but just get help from your TA and start early and you will be just fine!
Kindest, most insightful professor you'll ever meet. Doctor Coyne, I am so sorry for crying in your office hours!!
Dr. Coyne is a stellar professor! A lot of her lectures are similar to the textbook, so a bit of repetition, but they weren't boring. She wants what you learn in the class to make a difference, not just in your career but in your own life. She almost always ends class with testimony connected to the topic, keeping us focused on the most important.
Dr. Sarah Coyne really cares about her students, despite the class size. She makes lectures engaging, and extremely meaningful! She is very experienced in her field. The three papers were semi-challenging, but the TA's are there for you and more than willing to help. The tests are open-note. I cannot recommend this professor enough !!
I loved this professor! Her lectures helped me gain a greater testimony which may seem odd but is entirely true. I hated to miss even a single class. She cares deeply for every student. I added a family life minor because of her and I hope to take more of her classes. Go to the TAs for help with the three papers and you will do well in this class.
Sweet, but her lectures were mostly just repeats of the textbook. I liked how engaging she was. Grading on papers was very nit-picky and your grade depended highly on which TA you had. I sometimes felt like I was being talked down to, like I was a kid. Felt almost patronizing during lectures. Mixed feelings about her as a prof.
Professor Coyne is an amazing professor! Her lectures were engaging and she included so many real-life examples. The grading break down was organized by textbook readings, quizzes, and video activities, three papers throughout the semester, and two open note exams. Exams were not extremely difficult, being open note, & use TA's for paper help :)
She's an amazing professor and one of my favorites! The class is super easy. The only reason I gave a 2 for difficulty is because the three papers are doozies, but the TA and FHHS writing lab will help you ace them! You can revise any paper below 90%. Exams are curved, and there's only one midterm and one non comprehensive final.
I thoroughly enjoyed Professor Coyne's Human Development course. She did an excellent job integrating spiritual principles in course material, she was always very considerate of different perspectives and opinions, and she was crucial in encouraging my interest in studies in Family Life.
Amazing Professor! As long as you take good notes during her lectures and keep up with the reading, you'll do absolutely fine. She is a super caring and understanding professor, I loved taking her class and definitely would recommend.
I really enjoyed this class! Professor Coyne is kind, supportive, and offers lots of extra credit. She's always willing to help with papers, and her lectures are engaging and go by fast. Overall, a great class and I definitely recommend taking her class!
This class was so good! I really love Professor Coyne, she gave really meaningful lectures and was so kind. You have a few papers in this class, but nothing crazy. Weekly quizzes from the textbook, and a decent amount of reading, but you have resources to use on tests. I would highly recommend!
My roommate took Dr. Nelson this semester, so I was attended some of his lectures won top of class from Sis C. In my opinion Dr. Nelson's lectures are better (more information, nice flow, videos from his studies, more incorporation between secular and spiritual), but Sis C overall course is more manageable, and Sis. C lectures have fun activities.
This professor is so lovely, she cares so much about her students and gives great lectures.
Loved Professor Coyne! She had engaging but information packed lectures. She had multiple opportunities for extra credit and even chances to redo parts of papers. She loves to talk to students during office hours and is open to hard questions and conversations. Really cares about the students and wants everyone to succeed!
Professor Coyne is amazing! She truly cares about her students. Her lectures are inspiring, uplifting, and applicable for every profession. She is very kind, compassionate, and understanding. There are 3 papers, 2 exams, and weekly readings and quizzes online (which you get 2 attempts at). She has lots of opportunities for extra credit too.
Dr. Coyne is the best professor I have had here at BYU and I have been here 3 years. She does a phenomenal job at lecturing so that you understand! She tells personal experiences to enhance learning as well as in class activities that are so much fun! The homework load is really doable and the reading were so interesting. Would totally recommend!!
Dr. Coyne is a great professor! I would definitely take this class again; the course is set up to help students succeed and get a good grade. As long as you stay on top of the assignments, expect to love the lectures and get an A in the class.
I LOVE DOCTOR COYNE!! She gives so extra credit, and the exams are easy. Everything is open book, and she makes it really easy on us. Her lectures are so interesting, and I love them! She also cares so much about her students!
I recommend the class. Lots of readings, but you don't need to do all of it to understand. The papers are pretty long and hard, but if you start them far in advance, you'll be fine. Tests are open book, open note, open lecture slide, but they're hard bc there's so much info in random spots that was only covered briefly in class.
Really nice professor, tests are easy if you take good notes. Interesting material and not a lot of busy work
Super lecture heavy class. Tests are open note and open book but still pretty hard. The essays take a while to write but they're not graded too harshly, just start those early and keep up on the reading.
Her classes were super interesting and she made the lectures really engaging which I liked. There are small assignments due each and then there were three papers due throughout the semester. The papers were long but the topics were interesting which made it easier to write. Overall I really liked her class and would totally take it again.
She is amazing at answering questions and although I have some different opinions than her, she teaches in a professional manner where I don't feel like my opinions are attacked or that opposing opinions are attacked. I changed my major to Human Development and talked to her about opportunities with her afterwards. She was very helpful.
One of the best professors I have ever had!
I love Sarah Coyne! Her class was so interesting, and I learned so much! She had pretty easy tests as they were all open note/slide. Her essays were a little tricky, but we could revise it and get more credit for it. She was so good at making it engaging and fun and I love this class. Go take it from her she is the best!!
I took SFL 210 with Dr. Coyne. I literally loved this class. It is my favorite class I've taken. It had so much information that I feel like will actually be helpful even if your career has nothing to do with human development. There are 3 essays total, one midterm and one final exam. She has extra credit opportunities and she is so kind.
Do not listen to the people that say it is hard. Literally the best class with the best professor. She curved the test and there is so many extra credit opportunities. Literally no excuse not to get an A
Professor Coyne is very passionate about what she does and she cares deeply about her students and their success in her class. There is minimal homework other than a little textbook reading and quick weekly quiz. The exams and quizzes are all open note and open book which takes away lots of the stress. It is quite easy to succeed in her class.
She was such an amazing teacher, I learned so much from her. There were a few papers, but if you follow the rubric and meet with the TA's they are doable!! I love her!!!!
Professor Coyne is a great instructor who clearly cares about his students and makes Human Development interesting and easy to follow. I didn't always love the amount of writing we had to do. Overall, the class was a good experience, and I learned a lot about myself and others. I'd recommend him if you want a supportive and organized professor.
I highly recommend taking this course! The topic is super interesting, I think highly beneficial to know! Open book, open notes, work is not stressful in the slightest bit. Three essays total, two chapters a week. I would suggest giving yourself some time to write the essays, it has really clear rubric and feedback too! Extra credit opportunities!
Professor Coyne is the best! There were only 3 big essays, the readings are not horrible, and as long as you take good notes and attend the lectures you will do great on the exams. The exams are online, open-book. The lectures are so engaging, I learned so much! Prof. Coyne truly cares about all her students and does her best to help you succeed.
Professor Coyne is absolutely incredible! Her lectures are so interesting and you can tell she cares a lot about her students. There are lots of opportunities for extra credit and there is a lot of support for the papers and exams. I loved this class and would totally take it again!
So Kind! She lets you use the book and notes on the exams. A few harder papers but she lets you make edits to get point back. She wants you to succeed!
She was so passionate about human development and did a great job of making the information come to life throughout her lectures. I do feel like she had a slight political bias in her teaching, but it didn't bother me too much. The papers take quite a bit of work, but overall this class was so interesting and fun!
Professor Coyne is amazing! I enjoyed the class and the way that she presented information. You can tell she is passionate about human development. I enjoyed coming to class and felt she had clear expectations for all of our assignments. If you need to take human development, definitely take it with Professor Coyne!
She is seriously incredible. You can tell that she loves what she teaches, and it's so refreshing to hear her explain such an important topic.
I took the online class and I enjoyed all my assignments. There is a lot to read and listen to, but they were interesting. There is a project every 2 weeks, but doesn't take too much time if you break it into pieces. No midterm, but a final at the end. Recommend for non-FHSS students as well to get a more rounded view of human development.
Professor Coyne is one of my favorite professors ever, I absolutely loved learning in her class. She made it interesting and engaging. You can really tell she cares a lot about this class and everyone who takes it. If you have to take SFL 210 take it from her
Professor Coyne teaches as a lecture based style class and her presentations are great: easy to comprehend/take notes; cover all of the course material of textbook. She gave 3 papers throughout the semester, and we were able to meet with TA's to discuss the papers before and after. The grading was fair and you spend a lot of time hearing from TA's.
she's awesome
Fairly easy and enjoyable class overall, the only thing I disliked was the three major papers throughout the semester. As long as you give yourself plenty of time to complete the papers and make sure you understand them, you should do fine.
She is a kind professor, but she pushes an agenda. If you believe heavily in the family proclamation and want to have a professor who does as well, I would reccomend Dr. Larry Nelson. We watched two of his lectures when we didn't have class and I loved how he connected the gospel to the the secular world. Look up Coyne's name on Cougar Chronicle.
She is the best professor I have had at byu. She is so kind and compassionate and gives amazing inspiring lectures. She is so knowledgeable and taught me so many thing. She is extremely sensitive towards the needs of her students especially while teaching hard topics. Her rubrics were clear and she graded fairly. Take her classes!
Amazing lectures! I learned so much and ended up switching my major because of the class!
She's so fun and lectures are interactive, I've understood a lot by going to class. I love how she actually shows what we learn. Not homework heavy, some reading and then a mini quiz after. Tests are open book & open note.
The class is quite relaxed, and the homework isn't too bad. We had three pretty long papers through the semester, but they aren't graded too harshly. The exams are both open-note and aren't super difficult either. Regardless, she was a great teacher and cares a lot about helping her students understand the content by making it engaging.
Such an amazing class, 10/10 recommend!
I loved Professor Coyne's class! It is really textbook heavy so just make sure not to fall behind. Her lectures were really interactive, and she explained hard topics in a simple easy to understand way. The papers are pretty straight forward but make sure you start a couple of weeks before it's due because the exams and papers sometimes line up.
I love Professor Coyne! Her lectures were always very interesting, and I like that she uses stories from her personal life to help us understand the content. She also did a great job bringing her lessons back to Christ. The essays can feel like a lot, but the criteria is very clear, and the TAs are a great resource! I highly recommend this class!
This was an amazing class! Professor Coyne does a great job at creating lectures that are meaningful and relatable. She uses a lot of examples from her own life in her lectures, so you can see how the concepts can be applied to life. The papers can sometimes be confusing, but can be a lot easier if you meet with a TA and she allows paper corrections
Professor Coyne is a great professor! She is very passionate about human development and has lectures that are easy to understand. She uses a lot of personal experiences when teaching and relates to her students. She gives lots of extra credit opportunities as well! There are 3 major papers to write, but exams are open-note, open-book.
Professor Coyne is the best! I would highly recommend this class. The course material is straight forward and the expectations are clear. There is a textbook to read but the chapters aren't super long. The midterm and final are open note and you take them online. I always felt the spirit in this class and the content was very interesting!
Since this was an online course, I didn't really interact with Dr. Coyne. The class is super repetitive, same format of assignments each week, but it's easy with a manageable amount of work. It's very clear what's expected of you. There's no midterm but there is a final. Not the most engaging class, but it's easy and straightforward.
Professor Coyne cares deeply about her students and I enjoyed her lectures. She has lots of experiences from her past life that makes her a great fit to teach this class.
Professor Coyne is such a good professor. Her strengths are teaching difficult topics with amazing compassion and consideration. I took her intro to Human Development class, so the rest of my feedback will be on that. This is a class that covers SO MUCH, but little in depth. It often left me unsatisfied.
Professor Coyne is one of the best teachers I've ever had! She helps you understand Human Development and weaves her lectures beautifully with the gospel. Definitely would recommend taking a class from her.
Human Development is one of the most applicable classes I have taken. Dr. Coyne does an amazing job of connecting our learning with our personal lives, which helps us remember everything better. All of her tests were open-note and open-textbook. I would absolutely recommend this class and this professor to everyone.
Amazing teacher that cares about her students and cares about their success not only in her class but in life in general. Her lectures are very interactive and prepare you well for the exams. This class and professor Coyne will change how you see things in life and inspire you to be better.
Brought personal experiences to class & made the material relevant. Shares gospel & her testimony in content, she is so fun! We did Zumba one day & she loves to connect concepts to Disney! MANY opportunities for extra credit! Grades: 3 papers, weekly chapter quizzes, 2 video assignments per chapter, one midterm & one final (open note/book/slides)
She is super awesome and super understanding. There are three essays but that is just part of the curriculum.
