Mrs. Curl is such an awesome math teacher!! She really enhanced my learning and affinity for math because her teaching skills and suggestions were very effective.
She knows calculus inside and out, but doesn't teach very well. Witnessed seven people approach her for help outside of class, she told each of them to retake a lower class even if they passed it with an A. Tests designed as if you could teach others.
Worst instructor I've ever had. Spend 20-30 minutes going over how to do a new type of problem and at the end she tells you that's the way to do it wrong, and then only spends 2-5 minutes writing out the correct way. Makes for a very confusing class.
Lead me on about my grade. I didn't have a fair shot. Tests and quizzes were not covered in hw or anywhere in class. Her brain is whack if she comes up with her own problems. Take Dan Boley instead...he is awesome.
She is a wounderful teacher. I believe if there is a real math teacher in MJC it would be her.
By far the best Math teacher I've ever had, and I've had almost every math teacher at JC. If you get through her class, 172 will be much easier. Demands a lot from you, but an amazing teacher.
She is a mediocre teacher
Dont take this teacher. She has no idea what she's doing. She will assign a problem for a quiz yet wont go over that type of propblem in class. Also, she will say one person's answer is correct an will tell another the same yet the answers are completely different. DONT TAKE HER!!!!

Had to turn in homeowrk a lot and tons of quiz'. But it made it easy to know where you were in the class. She was really nice and funny, she joked about her age a lot and her glasses.
I read the command on this page, and I kind of wondered why there are some people who don’t really like to learn and expect the teacher to do all the work. Sorry you guys, it is college and you have to work hard. Mrs. Curl is a very hard working and nice teacher. I had her for math 121 and math 171, and I couldn’t look for a better teacher. Her lec
dude she was a horrible teacher
Dont take this teacher shes the worst ever, just ask her how many people actually pass her class, all the positive comments on this page are from the one or two people who actually passed her class, if you're a geek who spends all your time studying then you might have a chance to pass her class.
shes is a horrible teacher. she doesnt teach you anything and on the tests and stuff she will give you the hardest random questions she can think of. she wont let you even touch a calculator either
i have taken this class twice from other teachers and had the material down pat, so i took it to meet my math requirement, and it was aweful. she teaches and gets ahead of herself so she jumps around and the questions she gives you on the test are laid out different and worded weird and are just very hard. she doesnt prepare you for the tests. way too much homework
WORST TEACHER EVER
Mrs. Curl is really good teacher. If you do your homework and listen in class you will get an A. She is not a very easy teacher, but the things that she teaches and the way that she teaches them will help you a lot in your further classes especially math 173 and 174 with alcantra.
She is a nice lady but not that helpful in the actual mathematics. You don't know what she is looking for when she grades. You think you did good but when you get it back you did bad (and your suprised)
Same old story. Hard teachers get low ratings. Same old question. To learn or pass? If you really want to learn, take Mrs. Curl If you really want to pass with no effort take someone else (who? I dunno joe)
Ms. Curl is very kind. She goes through math processes quickly, but only because she has to cover a lot of info in a short amount of time. She's a fair grader, giving points even when you do only part of the problem correctly.
what can i say....there is only one word "...."
Super nice lady. Goes through material much too quickly at times. Tests are fairly straight-forward, but she hammers you on the final.
horrible teacher, she makes calculus seem impossible, she sucks out all the fun. I have taken calc in the a University and is not nearly as hard as she makes it seem. She should either change how she teaches or retire.
What a great teacher. You can tell she puts in so much time for her lectures. And she explains them slow enough for me to understand and is always open to questions. You can also tell she truly cares about the students and helping them learn.
I won't lie, this class was really difficult. She's a really nice lady, though at times picky about what needs to be on the labs (which aren't too bad at all, just follow the directions and take notes). The material covered was alot, not math-typical, but she does break it down. She'll help u during her office hours if u ask her, she's really cool.
She is very nice but at times can be mean. She grades the labs way to hard. the Exam and quiz are not easy but if you hard study one can get a good grade. Overall, she teaches the material more easier than other math 134 teacher.
What? she's still teaching? I wonder how many lives she has screwed up. Maybe she can take the limit as her teaching skills go to zero. Someone told me that the positive ratings here were by her lapdog students and her husband lol, wouldn't doubt it.
staty away from her please.you will waste your time.she is terrible.
Ok...you'll regret taking a class with her, but shes really good at the stuf she teaches and in the way che presents stuff. Its not her fault the material is a hard thign to teach, but she does her best. If you do your best, youll pass. If you slack off like me, you may or may not pass. I liked her class, but dont know if Ill pass or not..
she is an owesome teacher. only students who have no math brain don't love her. I am a university student but still I haven't seen a teacher like her. If you want to learn math just take with her otherwise you waist your time. I am not her lapdog or her husband. I am only a student who has learned alot from her.
I tried really hard in this class...I was also taking Chemistry...I am not a very good "math" person, but she is hard to not understand, sometimes she goes fast, but if you stop and ask questions, you can slow her down, and she wants you too if you don't understand something...also if you talk to her during her office hours she is more than willing
Great Teacher, love her!
she makes things funny. shes really helpful. gives plenty of time for review and questions. drops lowest scores for every thing such an homework, quizes and exams.
She is very clear, encourages questions and makes plenty of class time for review. The only thing I didn’t like about her was the way she graded. She marks you off for the most ridiculous and meaningless things. If you go and talk to her in her office she sometimes gives you points back if she realizes how crazy she was for marking you off.
She is by far the best math teacher i've ever had. she explains everything and will answer ?'s without hesitating. She is really nice ans super patient. There were a few slower ppl in the class, I was surprised at how patient she was with them. I recommend her and def. hope to keep taking her math classes. Do ur H.W and stay organized...Easy!!!;)
I hate Math, but Mrs. Curl really made this class bearable for me. She is a very nice lady, and very helpful if you come to her outside of class. The only people who seem to have problems in her class are the immature right-out-of-high-school babies. Anyone who understands the difference between college and high-school math should be fine.
Good teacher. I found her really easy to understand. She answeres questions well and goes over everything. A lot of quizzes, but they prepare you for the tests. If you miss class a lot your going to miss quizzes and wont do as well in the class.
The class is hard, but that's just the material, Sarah's a great teacher, very patient, very helpful. I've taken her for 3 different math classes. I've found that the students who don't like her are the ones who come to college with a chip on thier shoulder. It's fun to watch how she elloquently puts them in their place!
i couldn't stand this teacher at the beginning of the semester because of how picky she is about EVERYTHING. by the end of the semester, my math skills for 90 was perfected because of how picky she is about everything. i'm kinda glad she was picky. excellent teacher if you want to learn math!
I thought she was very good at explaining things and she had a tutor avaliable for just her students. I thought that was the best thing.
i found her extremly helpful. she was good at explaing things in more then one way. She also offered a tutor the was just for her class.
Entertaining but scatter-brained. Explains simple concepts at length, then runs out of time to explain the important stuff. Homework assignments not explained thoroughly. Very helpful and explanatory when asked.
She was GREAT! i hate math...but she made everything so clear and simple. i never knew i could be good at math until i took HER class. Perfect teacher!
she makes you use a computer program to do your homework and it makes homework take double the amount of time. she never gives extra credit. she moves too fast through material.
she is not a good teacher she is the biggest queen baby you can find she wants it done her way and if you dont its wrong. no matter if the answer is right if its not her way its wrong she doesn't care about the student and she does a test review but it is not helpful. i don't reccommend taking her at all if you want to understand the math
Didnt learn anything in her class. SHE WILL MAKE THE TESTS H ARDER AND WRITE THEM IN A WAY THAT YOU HAVENT SEEN THE PROBLEM BEFORE. SHE IS VERY TRICKY. MOVES WAY TOO FAST SKIPS LOTS OF STEPS DURING LECTURE. She is friendly, but she just cant teach.
She tries to make sure you know the material more than any other maths professor I've had. Her tests are difficult because of this, yet are still reasonably difficult. She does what she can to help students bolster their grades without going as far as to compromise the integrity of the course. The only bad part of the course was the online homework
She is a very nice person but she moves SO fast. It was hard for me to keep up and I ended up having to retake the class. I do not recommend someone taking this class if you are an older student that has been out of school for awhile.
If you are planning to go to university she is one who prepares you for it. I took all her classes and now I am really comfortable with math. You will learn a lot from her. Just try hard and you will be fine.
This teacher is very nice in person... But when it comes to tests, she rapes you... She is unfair in her grading. If it is not exactly as her work is she is likely to give you 0 points on a problem... the highest grade in class Spring 2009 was an 80%... if you like it rough, enjoy = ) if not; try Bolie, Cripe or Johnson...
She's a nice lady..but o my god is she hard! i hated going to that class and failed it anyway..i had to retake it and needless to say it was not with her..she grades insanely hard on the tests..there is no mercy..it was awful..i hate math anyway but she made me abhorr the subject altogether
I asked her numerous times for help and she didn't even want to help or even seemed interested in helping me get a tutor. Once she even told someone that asked a question about a problem and I quote "Sometimes in math you get a problem and it's hard." That's how she actually answered the question and that was the end of it.
She is demeaning and degrading. Her grading process is not fair whatsoever. If you ask questions, she'll embarress you. She takes pleasure in her students' failure.
SHE IS HORRIBLE! SHE NEEDS TO BE FIRED! SHE IS RUDE AND NOT HELPFUL AT ALL. SHE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO TEACH. SHE WILL MAKE YOU FEEL DUMB NO MATTER HOW SMART YOU ARE. IF YOU ASK QUESTIONS SHE WILL JUST SAY THE SAME THING OVER AGAIN. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
she tends to go to quickly and when asked for help she says to see her after class. I thought the class time was for questions, why the after class questioning.
Terrible terrible teacher. Worst ever. Worst Grading, Worst Teacher. All around bad news. Just do yourself a favor and withdraw, so you don't fail.
She is a very nice lady. extreemly helpfull during office hours. Her style of teaching is rough. Her test are extreemly hard.
Prof. Curl is an outstanding teacher. Organized lectures, very reasonable about asking questions from previous math courses. Her tests are tricky, but she teaches to the level of her testing(unlike Alcantra), so all is fair.
Great teacher. Her test are hard and she may be picky when grading, but she does her best to help everyone succeed. If you are willing to learn, study, and put effort in her class you will pass. Not doing the hw will not allow you to pass because you aren't trying the problems. She gives weekly quizes that help one prepare for the tests.
Curl takes a great deal of pleasure in the kill, so much in fact that the head of the M121 curriculum committee revealed to a class that only 7 of the 98 students she taught in Fall 2009 passed the course. You would think that this might throw up some red flags for the administration, but sadly MJC doesn't have a competent system of oversight.
Mediocre teacher. She is a total perfectionist when it comes to tests and quizzes, If you do one little thing wrong say goodbye to 8 of the 10 pts. I would only reccomend her to math majors, otherwise stay away. Most difficult math prof at mjc by far, and this is coming from someone who took Dr. YE!!
Worst teacher ever! Waste of time and money. Shouldn't she be ready to retire already?!
I continually asked for help n was referred to the tutoring center. The tutor could not tell me why I was getting such poor grades. I stayed with it n got an F. She made a comment to me that she hates teaching 20 n I should already know this stuff- I GRADUATED 36 YEARS AGO, this was not taught then. Dont waist ur $$$ Unless U know math WELL.
Don't take this professor if you need the minimal required math. She is in this to make sure you REALLY learn--that is why she is so tough. If you plan on moving to higher math, this class will definitely help, but be prepared to really work!!
horrible teacher! barely passed the class and was one of the 9 out of aproximately 91 students who did! I do not reccomend her for any pre cal course!
She was the worst math teacher that I ever had. I tried asking for help numerous times and she kept putting me off. Also, when I would take a test and miss one tiny little step she would mark the whole thing off and not explain what was wrong and then when you asked she would take more points off. I would not recommend this instructor at all.
Not helpful, extremely difficult to pass, and grades extremely hard.
Good: She grades assignments and exams fast. Her teaching is fairly easy to understand. Bad: Inconsistency. She will grade things wrong on your paper and grade them differently on someone elses. Hardest grader you will ever have for any class. You can understand the concepts but if you forget the details you will fail the class.I dont recommend her
I took her online math class as a refresher course and met with her a couple of times and emailed a few times. She was very helpful and I found her to be a very nice teacher. I wouldn't mind taking other courses from her.
Nice lady, but a terrible, awful, completely useless teacher! I went in for office hours for help and she actually told me to "open the book and figure it out yourself." DO NOT TAKE!
Most of the MJC math department needs to be overhauled. Dean caters to only gifted math students. Few instructors want students to pass, and this is evident in their grading/pass rates. There are a few decent instructors (Openshaw, Myers, Manke, Leitner), but most are part-time. Go to another college.
I have taken this class three times and continue to struggle with Sarah Curl's teaching methods. She is extremely anal with the steps and concepts of alegrbra. She set on a strick time schedule and doesn't slow down to explain the problem. This class is meant for those who love math.If you struggle and hate it as much as I do, try another teacher!
While curl is a good teacher and you learn alot in her class her grading is ridiculously hard. I find myself not passing with a good understanding of the material. If your an engineering major she is the teacher for you. If your a biology major just trying to get passed this class on with the rest of your life.... TAKE ANYONE ELSE!!!
really did not like this class. she is a really strict grader with some and not so much with others it seems like. she doesn't teach the material so that it is easy to understand. take statistics online at delta. WAY EASIER!!!!
Mrs. Curl is an awesome teacher, she teaches super good and organized. She does grade a little picky but she teaches so good it's not hard to get the hang of what shes looking for. She holds study reviews and its really to the point.
Great Teacher, Very Caring, Very Nice, Really wants you to do well. Shes also very understanding
Curl is a very stringent grader, requiring everything to be in the proper notation. She also assumes that you have already had her math 121 and 122 class, so if you had it with anyone else, or placed into calc straight from high school, then you are already at a disadvantage. This teacher is one that you have to give her what she wants or you fail.
Curl lectures at a deceptively slow pace but manages to cover a vast amount of material. This seems good, however too often I found myself referencing unclear and convoluted ex's from the book to help w/ hw. Be on ur toes! Her grading is strict, freq inaccurate, and based on quizzes/exams only. She gives small curves and will prepare u for math 172
She had admitted she hadn't taught the class in 20 years, she was a slow lecturer, letting 2 students ask too many questions while everyone was ready to move on. She always said, "See me after class when someone a real question. Overall it was easy if you knew the material beforehand.
Do not take. I wish someone would have told me not to. Inconsistent and honestly the worst math class I've ever taken.
Very organized. She's great at explaining each step clearly. She also teaches a lot of little tips and tricks to help you solve the problems easier. Her tests are fairly hard, but they are consistent to what she teaches.
Class was very good.
Honestly, I was expecting someone terrible from all the reviews, but I have to say, I really enjoyed the class. Prof. Curl is not the most helpful at times & can be rude, but as long as you attend the classes, do the homework & complete the labs, you'll do fine. She seems to really appreciate students that take the time to put forth strong effort.
Her grading is so hard and as others have stated she doesnt explain things and makes you feel dumb, i went from an A to a C to a F. by the end i was done and didnt wanna come any longer. as others posted her problems are weirded incorrectly like you have never seen before. needless to say i have to take math gain in fall with a better professor.
Mrs. Curl is really nice. She gives a lot of examples on new material. What I don't like about her is that one MUST do all of the steps in a problem-the way that SHE does them. If you get a problem right on a quiz or test but didn't do all of the steps that she does to get the answer, she takes off points!! However, there are more pros than cons! :)
She is a very good teacher i would take her class again, the semester of fall of 2012 the whole class was rude because she was slow and gave lots of examples which i thought it was nice to see the material as review.she shows the material with mutli way to do it and slow is better then a fast instructor.struggling or not students should take her.
Mrs.Curl is really a great professor. I struggled a little bit in this class but she always asks if you had problems with anything. She is very helpful.I did not understand how she graded, but she give partial credit for trying. She is a good professor who knows what she teaches.
She Does her Best.....I mean she is a fair teacher, and a bit over technical, but it is math, so I guess it has to be that way. She is always available, but a real stickler for her steps.
She is not easy at all. Her expectations are very high but she gives very thorough explanations and examples. A wonderful instructor if you are willing to put in the time and effort. Stay on top of your homework and study. It'll be your own fault if you don't pass. True talk.
Professor Curl is a fantastic teacher! Her lectures are well organized, she grades quizzes and exams promptly, and she won’t sucker punch you with difficult problems on tests. She is exceedingly patient with students who don’t grasp the material, but she may recommend that they visit her office for help instead of stopping the lecture for them.
mrs. curl is one of the best teachers ive ever had she is really nice and understanding as long as your respectful and dont talk in class she covers sections very thouroghly and is always there to answer any questions plus she has give back points for things you miss on quizes and exams i highkly recommend her
pop quiz first day. making me reevaluate my life.
she is a nice lady and explains well. she will take off points for little mistakes but you have to let her know or something at the end idk..she's fairly easy i'd take her again though
With taking her math 20 class she baby stepped us and got us all ready for math 70. If you have questions you better have extra time to ask her during office hours. She is extremely picky in grading her tests and quizzes and will take off points for weird things. She is fair and will give you the points back if you did them correctly later.
she was alright her responses were rude a little though im guessing she didnt mean to be she marked off points for little mistakes as well shes not terrible but she doesnt have patience students needs she just doesnt give the vibe that makes u feel comfortable with asking more than 1 Q i passed though yay thank her for that
Seriously!!! She has to be one of the worst instructors I have had so far in my College Career. She fails to maintain control of her class and allows continuous disturbances that distracts from the lessons. Her grading is crazy, if the answer is correct then let it be, if is not then fine. She was not the right instructor for me.
It has been 21 years since I have attempted math. Being in Mrs. Curl's class has defiantly made me feel as if I may need math 10. Her teaching technique is fast paced and a lot of information is given in one week to prepare for the weekly quizzes. If math is not your strong point, I'd consider taking your math with someone else, possibly Delta.
Would never in my life take her again
If you need help on something she says "see me after class" every time. Why pay to enroll in class if she never helps during that time. She tells you to shut up if you keep having questions.
DO NOT TAKE HER
This was a very difficult class and she won't hesitate to dock you for points if you don't do a perfect job. She seem sweet and passionate but if you value your GPA and feel like you may not do a stellar job, you may want to consider another professor.
she is a really nice lady. She is your average professor. Her lecture are kind of boring because she doesn't really make it fun. Homework is online using my math lab. Seems to get impatient with student who don't understand the material the first 20 times lol
Great teacher. Do your part and you will excel in her class.
Probably the worst math prof Ive ever seen
She's an amazing teacher! All she requires is that you do your part and you are guaranteed to pass!
She's an amazing calculus teacher!! As someone who hates math i was terrified of her class! But she teaches so well that even I could understand! Choosing her to be my math teacher was the best choice I ever made. She's so helpful and she teaches so clearly.
by far the worst math teacher at mjc. wants it done her way even if you get the answer correct, you lose points for not being exactly in format she teaches. must remember every formula. and does not take time with students.
Will mark you off on problems that are correct if shortcuts and other methods that she personally uses aren't used. Tests and study guides don't match up. Students in class have classed her "difficult."
Sarah Curl is the best!! She sort of takes the training wheels off so buckle down and get ready to become an adept mathematician.
By far the worst professor I have ever had the misfortune of having. She is completely unwilling to help students in her class and the students suffer for it. Does not give partial credit and is the most nitpicky grader. Only randomly selects 2 problems from your homework making any mistake an instant failure. Our class average is currently 52%
She is a really tough grader, not even half the class is passing. I would not take her class if you don't have time to get with other students and actually learn the material. I feel like I learned nothing from her.
So here is the thing, she is a good teacher, she explains stuff good, will help you in office hours if you need it, she will go over past homework assignments, and gives about a week for each homework assignment which is usually 15 problems. Her exams are honestly not that hard, they are based off of the homework, but she is so strict on grading.
This teacher gives hard exams, and is a extremely difficult grader. What a bad combination.
Very Awkward grading. You loss points for not using pencil, you loss pointa for not folding paper. I would bit recommend her for future people
She is just way too hard. Her exams are extremely difficult, and you basically get no partial credit.
Taken fall 2016. It was not easy If you use the tools she gives you it will all work out. I'm averaging a B right now. I am normally an A student. This is Pre-algebra its not an easy class regardless of teacher. This was hard for me dealing with cancer during class but she was always motivating and I never dropped . Wish she was teaching math 70..
She's a really sweet lady, but sometimes she isn't really clear on what she wants. She has multiple labs, quizzes, and 3 exams, plus the final. Labs are very straightforward. Quizzes are in groups. The exams is where everything matters. I messed up on one exam and it dropped my grade by 6%. However, it's easy to get points back. Her C is a 65%.
I took her class over the summer. The class was tough! She made the class enjoyable and I thought her lectures made the material easy to understand. I would highly recommend but be prepared to do some work!
only downside is that she wants her format on a test, but she is so sweet
We started off with 41 students and now there's of 16 left. Shes strict on grading even on stuff not related to the class. She marked me down 2 points for bad Grammer AND THIS IS A MATH CLASS!! lectures heavy but no time to work problems out ourselves. Only good thing is a 65% is considered passing. Stats is already hard enough she makes it worse
