Don't get me wrong, she's a great person. But she does have a lot of homework, long readings about 30-60 pages per week. She doesn't like repeating herself when asked questions and we've already discussed them, she will not state the answer again. Her instructions for essays are vague and broad, even with her help and tips do not help.
She can be quite helpful if you visit her during her office hours. She assigns a lot of readings with response questions that are a lot of work. We wrote a total of 6 essays, instructions can be unclear. Tough grader, def makes you work for your grade. Most of class time is spent talking about irrelevant topics like what we did over the weekend.
She is a nice person, but most of the class is spent on irrelevant topics that we did over the weekend. The class is based on 6 essays and tons of homework assignments every week. The instructions are sometimes unclear and when you ask her for clarification she gets an attitude. This class is an L!
Honestly such a mean person. Her feedback on the six impossible essays she required us to write about was so mean. She rips your paper to shreds all the time, and think she knows everything about everything. I got an A in English 5, but she makes English much more complicated than it needs to be. Never take her. She WILL make you cry.
Most horrible English Professor I have ever taken! She is so rude and every single time I would receive feedback on an essay I felt anxious and nervous. She is a super harsh grader and will find anything to deduct points and will not give helpful feedback. Avoid at all costs, even if it was the last English class available.
Hardest English class I ever had. The only way someone would get an A would be to continuously go to office hours. She always gives negative feedback in a very rude way. Your writing has to be perfect in order to get a good grade. You have to participate in class because participation is heavily weighed. Honestly, do not take her.
I don't mind working for my grade but this class & instructor has been the worst in my college career so far. She assigns loads of reading & hw every week on top of 6 essays. At the end, she created a participation grade out of 70 points and gave majority of class HALF of that. Her response was "u must participate ALL THE TIME". Ridiculous.
Worst English professor that I have ever taken. Strict grader when it comes to her super vague essays. Attendance is required but she doesn't even really teach. Class time is typically spent on discussions that she expects you to participate in or on free writes. Grading scale makes zero sense. Do yourself a favor and find a better professor!! :)
Honestly the worst professor I have had in my few years at Sac State. When asked what was wrong with my papers, she gives THE MOST vague feedback and says she just didnt like it. I even went to the writing center for help as suggested. Most of class is spent talking about how much her kids annoy her. WASTE OF TIME, TAKE SOMEONE ELSE.
I love writing but this class made me second guess my ability. The class is spent on peer review upon finishing essays, which were pointless because no one in the class knew exactly what they were doing. I did all I could to perfect my writing but it was never good enough which she made clear with constructive criticism in a condescending way.
Honestly I wouldnt recommend taking her. I know many times professors give criticism on writing but she was rude when it came to her comments. She suggested for me to switch my major too. You read every week and have to do assignments for the reading. One group essay which isnt any easier than a independent one. Participation in class is required
Professor Hancock was the best! She actually cares about students and will really go the extra mile to help you if you need it. I really recommend going to her office hours; she's more than willing to look over and review your essays, and I really value her opinion a lot more than that of other students in peer review. Overall, a really great lady!
she is a tough grader, I would go to her office hours to look over my essays with her and correct any mistakes, after correcting the mistakes and turning it in, I received a 78% with more criticism she did not address when I met with her. I made the mistake of not looking here before choosing my classes. her 1.5 rating is way too generous. AVOID!!
She made my first semester of college a living hell. (Everyone in my class hated this class and her) She leaves unnecessary comments, grades terrible, and gives you a ton of work. She doesnt explain anything then grades you hard on things she didnt even talk about. If you forgot a comma shes giving you a 70/100. It ruined my college experience.
If you have the chance to run, do it! Professor Hancock is a serious, genuine, and honest person. She is not afraid to tear you apart and call your work garbage. She assigns weekly homework to read essays from the textbook. Overall there are three significant essays, with a couple of other small pieces throughout the semester. Good luck, have fun!
Professor Hancock is simply amazing. The class requires a lot of reading and 5 essays. The expectations for the papers are very clear. Lecture is important for understanding what you are supposed to take from the readings and apply to essays. If you follow her class structure you will succeed. Fair grading, accessible, best english class ever.
This is hard class in which you have to earn your grade but professor Hancock gives you the necessary tools to succeed. She wants her students to pass and learn how to write effectively. There is a lot of reading, 5 essays and participation is worth 70 points. Showing up to class and actively participating is absolutely necessary. Great teacher!
Sometimes I wish I didnt get accepted to sac state just so I can avoid going to her class. Never imagined such a horrible class even existed. Cant believe I payed to go through that
She is a good teacher, just very difficult the way she set up the course.
All the bad ratings are true. Do not take this class. Switch as soon as you see her on your schedule. She makes everything harder than in needs to be, shes rude, and assigns way too much work for no reason. You will also read and write A LOT.
Truly a garbage professor. She has us peer review which is pointless and then she takes forever to grade your paper and when she does she leaves vague remarks which do not help in the slightest. Also, attendance and participation is 100 points so if you miss more than 3 days or are shy you are screwed. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
I don't know how this professor isn't under REVIEW.. my eng 5 class literally bashed professors that grade too critically to where there aren't any positive points of an essay, makes subjectivity seem like a fact, and doesn't emphasize the point of drafts. There's nothing to take away in her class except what she does and doesn't like.
Never take this class. As a person that sees hard work daily from my partner and loves English so much to where journalism was his major for a while, I've never seen him so stressed out about a class before. She assigned a heavy workload and graded hard. She graded hard for attendance over COVID and didn't ease. What a terrible person to do that.
This instructor is fair/clear & you can learn a lot. This class is not for everyone as it is not an easy-A. I have not received an A in ENGL in a while but if you work hard you can do it. Her teaching style can be harsh for some students and if you can't handle blunt comments and honesty, this is not for you. She expects a lot but it is possible.
Asked her a few questions and the response was usually along the lines of I gave you the tools, now figure it out. Feedback is very vague and often just you dont get it. She spent a lot of the time talking about how she preferred teaching at the community college instead. Felt very condescending. Not a good experience, wouldnt recommend.
The worst professor I have ever had. She doesn't teach the material but expects you to already know it. If you don't speak up and participate in every class she will give you an F in participation. She doesn't go over the essay prompts in class which are extremely long and complicated. She is extremely unhelpful and unkind. Do not take this class!
The professor doesn't really teach anything in the class. She assigns very LONG readings but doesn't guide or lecture at all to get something out of it. To be short, all the bad comments are true. NEVER TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. You will get nothing out of this class.
She'll say you must buy the physical textbook, but just download the free version trust me. You only need to annotate like 5 pages. Assigns VERY long readings for every class just to get a small point across. Slow with feedback on assignments. There were some fun discussions though. I would only recommend her if you truly love reading/writing.
definitely AVOID her. she heavily stressed participation, & if you miss a week of class you forfeit all of your participation pointsresulting in an F. she assigned a lot of assignments for the first week + vague feedback. for the book, get the online copy since you'll just be annotating the book. another red flag was that the syllabus was 9 pages
Horrible. The good reviews on this page are actually cap. I recommend anyone else.
Avoid! If another class is available CHOOSE THE OTHER OPTION. If you dont believe youll see why.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS AREN'T CLEAR AND GRADE HARDER.
I think you got a good idea on how this professor is from all the other reviews. They are anything, but exaggerated. Forces attendance AND participation or you lose a letter grade. Goes over your papers with you, you make the adjustments, she hands you back a C. 100 pages of reading WEEKLY Drop now. Or take this class if you want a bad grade.
She may seem cold at the beginning, but stick it our and you will find she is actually a great teacher. She gives lots of helpful resources and her lectures are entertaining. It was a small class in the end and we all worked together for help. Just don't expect her to be chill, this is a college class so you're expected to work hard.
Prof. Hancock gives out an unnecessarily large amount of work compared to any of the other ENGL professors. Hands in a mediocre grade and gives vague feedback on how to improve it, or what you did wrong. I read the reviews before her class and it was already too late to switch out, don't make the same mistake as I did, switch as soon as you can.
If I could give her a 0/5 I would. She does not give good feedback when you ask questions, is SUPER unhelpful, grades hard, and doesn't explain her assignments well. If you have questions she's rude about it and then will direct you to the writing center instead of helping you. A terrible professor she needs to be fired.
This professor is most likely the worst in the world. She doesn't teach or explain her material or the 500 writing assignments that she gives. She always claims that her purpose is to help students improve their writing skills, but she has no idea that all she does is let her students down. DO NOT TAKE HER!!! Save your time and money.
If I could give her a 0 I would. She grades so heavily and will leave so many comments that dont help you improve at all. She assigns necessary work, is vague in her feedback, and overall a rude professor who doesnt seem to care about her students improving. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Does not give good feedback doesn't ever have help for your questions. extremely rude! she does not need to be a professor, drop this class if you have a chance to. assigns so many readings and doesn't lecture. every assignment is based on the readings only.
This teacher shows very little respect for her students and does not give constructive criticism, rather focusing on how the student made a mistake or was wrong, yet never explaining how to get around this obstacle, what exactly the issue is, or how to learn from this issue.
HORRIBLE, DO NOT TAKE HER COURSES. She makes you feel like you are so dumb in class, will call you out if you do not understand! Everyone in my class emailed the dean about her. We had large essays each month, and it is now December and all of my essays STILL have not been graded. DO NOT TAKE!
She is the worst professor I have ever seen in my life.........
If you can avoid this professor, do it at all costs, even if it means messing up your ideal schedule. Don't expect to ask her to answer any of your questions. Be prepared for the most unclear prompts and essay instructions. If you want to have a remote idea of what's going on be ready to spend all of your free time reading the textbook.
I loved her! She is a super tough grader and assigns a lot of work but if you work with her you'll do fine! Don't procrastinate in her class, so if you're looking for an easy class, don't take her.
Never take this Professor.
This class is stressful and overwhelming she is NOT a good professor by any means. If they did she would immediately say that it was a dumb question, and that they should know the answer based off of her instructions. Seriously the worst. Oh and the best part we started off with 40 students in the beginning of the semester and down to 15 by March.
Gives you a tough time. It is not a easy class!
I had this professor for one week in EarlyStart, she made snarky comments to the entire class. I completed an assigned 250 word essay yet she refused to give me any credit for it because I forgot to respond to a peer under the discussion. Also threatened to give no credit for the entire class just because of this, regardless of perfect attendance.
One of the rudest, most unprofessional professors I have ever taken. She makes unnecessarily mean comments to the class when there was always a nicer way to put it. Avoid!
As others have said, she is very knowledgeable about English. If only she was so passionate about her students. On multiple occasions she was rude to classmates and her grading criteria, although backed by multiple pages of writing, were in the end often unclear. She seems to have a very specific style she would like you to write in.
She says reach out for help but her personality makes you not want to ask for help or speak during class. When I did reach out she made snarky comments instead of telling me how I can improve my essay. Expect to have lots of readings also.
was so extra and complicated for no reason, for example, we would have an essay due monday night but out of the blue, sunday night she would assign a assignment for monday morning. so unorganised. ruined my first experience at sac state. never taking her again, ruined my spring break experience too. why did i have to run into her out of everyone?
She seemed cool at first but she is a hot MESS. Took WEEKS to grade assignments so we never had accurate grades. Confused our classes and told us to bring stuff to class but just would forget about it during class. She was never sure what she assigned us cos she always confused her classes. You need to write how she likes it if you want to pass.
Worst professor I have ever encountered. Please avoid this professor, she does not teach and is rude.
This has to be the worst professor I have taken at Sac State. I don't understand how many people have said this before, and nothing has clicked to her yet. Make it make sense. She probably gets satisfaction seeing this. The way she grades is terrible, and the feedback she gives is even worse. She will make the rudest comments about one's writing
The worst professor I have had by far. Don't take this class with this instructor unless you want your time wasted. She will not help you even if you have questions. She will just make you look at the course syllabus which is also vague.
This is a learn-it-yourself class. You are expected to figure everything out through modules on canvas with the most confusing, lengthy, riddle-like prompts. Grades everything late in the semester and very strictly for no reason. Gives feedback, but after you've done half the homework assignments so you cant put the feedback to use.
I mean the other reviews say it all. This professor is not easy, she's honestly the worst. I will say one thing though, I did learn a lot from her. But regardless, the way she speaks to her students and makes you feel little is the worst. She speaks a lot about mental health and whatnot but yet does not make you feel heard when you need it.
Just an awful professor. She can be rude and make you feel dumb.
First off there were times in class Sarah Hancock belittled my peers and insulted them to their faces. She would bring up irrelevant daily topics to class and if we didn't contribute to her discussion she would mock the class for keeping silent. Though I was in class every day my points for being present were cut in half because "I couldn't talk."
Horrible. Avoid. Should not be teaching anywhere. I disclosed my mental disorder to her and she didn't consider it and still gave me 0 points for participation. Reported to the chair and dean but they didn't help. Believe the reviews. She's awful. A waste of time and money. She will act nice in class but rude and accusatory in office hours. Avoid!
The worst. Take any other professors class
The class can be tough at times and Professor hancock can be a tough grader but she cares about her students. Her tough teaching style and straight up attitude isn't for everyone and I think it's really hard to pass this course with an A. I believe she's still a good professor but you just need to show her that you want to work hard and improve.
Lots and lots of homework and workload. She is a very hard grader and will grade your essays based on your attendance which isn't fair. Worst teacher I have had throughout my college experience. Try to take anyone else if possible.
Cruel for no reason. Unorganized class structure. The directions for every assignment are confusing. Attendance and participation are mandatory, no excuses. Slow grader. Feedback is more negative than constructive. Got a B but would never recommend.
Professor Hancock is a person that you don't want in your life I was doing all of my assignments ON TIME and she dropped me for no reason.
Really hard class
READ THE ASSIGNED READINGS!!!!! Professor Hancock is not joking, you will not do well in the class unless you READ. I recommend speechify to help get through the long ones- she is a great professor and ATTEND OFFICE HOURS shes hella understanding and will explain it all to you if you just meet her halfway :)
Prof. H is very verbally and mentally abusive. She seems normal, but when you talk to her on 1:1 mandatory Zoom meetings to talk about your assignment, she will unleash her evil and make you feel small. Research your professors, and do not take the ones who abuse their students. There are so many people here who have been hurt by this woman.
She is the worst professor I've ever had. Don't go to her for support or you will be very disappointed. She has no compassion whatsoever and talks down to her students (verbally/ emotionally abusive). Office Hours aren't helpful; she refuses to help students when they try to reach out for help. Grading is very harsh.
Assignments have high expectations, requirements, & will take hours. Around 30 assignments in total. Would not recommend if english can not be your main focus for the semester. Main assignments: 3 small quizzes + final exam, 3-4 annotation assignments, 2 essays, Annotated bib,10 pg. research paper (200 pts). UTILIZE HER OFFICE HOURS !!!!!
Instantly, you'll feel the need to drop this class. Listen to that voice in your head and drop it.
This teacher is very difficult to work with. You basically only have 1 chance to ask a question and then she won't help you out afterwards. Her comments when you get something wrong are very harsh and lack clarity. Too much reading is assigned and her instructions can be very vague to work with.
Harsh on participation grade
Horrible
A prime example of what is wrong with the education system. She creates obstacles if you're not privileged. If you have to miss class because you don't have the luxury to drop everything and go to school, or if you have a job, or kids? Too bad, she will fail you if your attendance isn't perfect. 0% equitable. 100% biased!!
She was the HARSHEST teacher I have ever had!
Does not afford students the same amount of leniency as she does for herself. Gives conflicting instructions and contradicting teachings.
DONT TAKE THE CLASS, Waste of time. Her demeanor throughout the course is purely toxic. She's passive aggressive and makes you feel dumb for asking questions while always bringing up "not being successful if you don't ask questions" and how she's all about "open communication". Also her clarity on assignments is terrible even when asked about it.
When you ask a question she makes you feel dumb and her responses to questions are very bland. You can fix an issue that she pointed out on your paper than the grade you got after it was fix is now lower. You really have try your hardest to maintain a stable grade which is annoying cause of other classes you have to focus on as well.
Run baby run! She might look sweet at the beginning, but don't fall for it. My classmates barely passes her class, a lot of people dropped and fail. Trust all the reviews here because they are true! I'm just wishing that English department will tell her to calm down and don't fil all the students. You will be feeling dumb and disrespected with her
She has a big potential to be a fine professor with the higher rating, but unfortunately she is unfairly tough with gradings, and does not create a safe space for asking questions. Office hours are bad! Feedback on your paper is not going to be helpful. She is not teaching, she only judges without a helpful feedback. I dropped her on the 8th week.
i was a freshman and they gave me this class first semester, at first she may seem nice and funny but DROP HER CLASS INSTANTLY. She is the worst. She talks down on students instead of giving feedbacks and she talks about random things in class instead of teaching. Dropped her class the third week. RUN RUN RUN, She is your worst nightmare
If you are someone who is unsure about their writing skills do not take this class. Comments made on assignments are just not helpful and makes everything more confusing. Also if you someone who doesn't like to talk a lot in class do not take it. Professor Hancock is a nice person but comments that she makes in person and online are very harsh.
NAH. SHES TRIPPIN
Unfortunately, I ignored the reviews because she was the only ENG 20 class open. Please do not take her. She is super passive-aggressive when you ask for clarification on an assignment and she belittles you for not understanding. She grades ridiculously hard for no reason. This is a GE class that she is taking way too seriously.
Go to her office hours or ask your classmates for help. Bc I don't know how to do the Autoethnography ppr & it's a horrible assignment to do. She needs to just let us write essays & help us with bettering our writing. Take a different teacher!!!!
Rude, passive-aggressive, and hard to work with. Disrespectful if you try to contact her via email or text (she uses the remind app). She is confusing and expects you to just figure it out lolz. Like others have said RUN RUN RUN cause she fr beTRIPPIN.
Hancock does not care about her students or their success. I am going to the dean and speaking with them because I know I am not the only student who has tried to work with her and has only been met with humiliation and disrespect. Reconsider taking her unless you plan to cry after every class.
Run away from this professor, I dropped her class just before census date and when she got my drop form she got annoyed and dropped my graded assignments to 0's. Pain to work with and doesn't provide good feedback and is just passive aggressive. DONT TAKE HER CLASS IF YOU VALUE YOURSELF AND YOUR SANITY
Do NOT take her classes unless you want to feel belittled for making ANY mistakes. Professor Hancock lacks care about her student's success and it shows. Many people have dropped out this term and I quite honestly don't blame them. Hancock's instructions are hard to understand half of the time and she'll get annoyed if you question her on it.
If you are taking this class for a GE, don't take it with her. She takes the class too seriously & is very patronizing when students speak up about their experiences on how they feel they are doing in the class & what she can do to improve the class. 10/10 on her accessibility outside of class and she can help you write a hell of an essay.
I wouldn't recommend this class it adds extra stress.
Took Professor Hancock for additional aid and all she did was bring me more confusion on my ability to write. She is super unclear on writing expectations and instructions. Off topic and talks too much of her personal life instead of teaching. OFFICE HOURS is not for additional help it is for teaching which makes no sense. DO NOT TAKE HER.
This teacher is the worst teacher I've ever taken. She uses lecture times to talk about her tutoring and complain about everything, like we're her therapists. I had to place more time and effort doing her class assignments and essays just to get bad grades. She's not helpful whatsoever.
Do not take this class, she offers four missed classes. However, I did not expect that to mean illnesses. I had pneumonia!!! She still took away participation points, even though I emailed her explaining the situation!! I had multiple family emergencies and lost my friend in an accident during the semester. She did not care. DO NOT TAKE HER.
I did not wear my seatbelt on the way to class in the hopes I don't make it. Her critiques are sharp and rude, she openly disrespects students in class and in meetings.
Only take her if you are willing to dedicate hours of your time to writing essays and going to office hours. 1-3 weekly readings and Canvas assignments. Although she was tough, she did give good feedback, and I was lucky enough to be on her good side. Three back-to-back, lengthy papers and a 2-4 page reflection. I learned a lot, but I am TIRED.
Her class was tough, but as long as you're willing to put in the effort, you should be fine. I heavily recommend going to office hours so she can give you feedback on writing assignments before you turn them in. She's a tough grader but it's because she wants you to do well.
Was the worst prof I've ever had in my entire academic career (starting senior year) -Marks u down for every little nitpick -Grades yr paper based on criteria not mentioned in the 3 pg prompt -Insanely long prompts for hw w confusing n vague prompts -Takes everything super personally -Leaves sassy comments instead of constructive criticism
If you're lazy and want everything to be easy, consider taking a class from a different professor. You can learn how to be a better writer if you are determined to!
Prof. Hancock was overall sweet and kind, she is a tough grader but does give clear feedback in my opinion. She does require for you to focus on her class because it could be very time consuming. If you are delicate and can't receive feedback without hurting your feelings then do not take her. Be ready to want to give up!
drop or avoid this class. lectures are not helpful. grading is unreasonable. shes not the kindest.
