She is the best ESL professor.
She is the best ESL writing teacher ever! extremely helpful and fair!
She is a very nice person. If you go to class and do the work on time, you will definitely get a high grade. She is very helpful and patient about your mistakes such as late works, etc.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER
I had her for WR98 and i easily got A. But WR100... she is like a different person.. the Highest paper was B and the others are c+ or C.. It is Best choice for WR98 but do not take her for WR100
she nice teacher, good person. But her grade is not easy, she hardly gives A range grade of a paper, sometimes she even gives B++
Hanselman's easiness sort of depends on which level you are in. For WR097, she is an excellent professor and not a hard grader either. she is clear about the concepts and, of course, knows what ESL students need.
Best ESL writing professor you can ever have. She makes the class really easy. She is a really fair grader. You always get what you deserve. She is very helpful in and outside the class. You do not want to miss being her student. Will make your life easier.
Best ESL professor of BU! U don't want to miss her class! She is a harsh grader, but she is always very helpful when it comes to revising. Take her class!
She is the best professor I have ever met so far! She does not give an A in 100 but is always open toward other opinions and enjoys listening to students analyzing stories in new ways! She is very friendly and helpful so take her class! But you should keep in mind that you need to work your butt off just to get above B.
Professor Hanselman is great. She makes class fun and interesting. However when it comes to grading I don't think she has a straightforward way so I think that makes it unfair for the students who really try and the ones who finish a paper hours before its due or even forget to do it at all. She can help you improve your writing alot.
She is hands down the best writing professor! If you want to get somewhere with your writing and critical thinking abilities, she will definitely help you. Her classes are usually highlight of the day not to mention she is super approachable. She is not an easy grader but try hard and the work will pay off. I miss her class so much!
harsh grader tho she's helpful n makes the class interesting
Very good in teaching but strict in grading. Go to her office hours and talk to her and you will learn a lot.
Loved her class! Very approachable and helpful professor! She managed to make the class interesting. Not an easy grader but if you go to her office hour and go to tutors, you're fine!
Super nice, very helpful, easy to pass but hard to get an A. I liked her so much I'm taking her next semester for WR100. Take her. Felt like some of the books I bought were useless.
She is a very friendly person. Her classes are interesting, and the discussion was awesome. However, she is a harsh grader, and requires a lot of reading and writing, which honestly are not that interesting. Out of the 15 kids in my class, one got an A-, most got a B-
She is friendly and eager to help. Her teaching and advice are really beneficial to ESL students. Need to work a lot and pay much attention to get a high grade, though.
Great professor, just tough to get a good grade.
I didnt believe it when I read "if you want a good grade don't take her" almost everyone gets C+ B- or B on the papers! and she doesnt say exactly what you need to improve, but the class is interesting and she is very nice... she curves based on participation and attendance. You dont learn much in the class. I would take again for fun not for GPA
Very tough grader. She is very nice and cares about your ability to write, but gives low grades. (no effort points) Not much reading. She explains much writing concept on the blackboard, so sometimes it's quote boring.
Tough grader. She teaches ESL writing classes, which the grades should be set more easily. Her short fiction class is fun, and so is writing your own short fiction. She is very nice outside of the classroom and willing to help her students.
Very bad professor. Do not recommend because she gives a lot of assignments and the classes are pretty boring.
dont take her class!
Professor Hanselman is actually a nice person and will give you real comments when you attend the conference for paper. You will definitely improve your writing if taking her class, but she is also a tough grader, and thus you need to try hard to get a nice grade.
She is kind of a tough grader. However, she is very helpful in her office hours and if you pay enough attention to her in class, she will give you very useful comments. Overall she is really nice and she really listens to students.
Prof Hanselman is a great prof. I'm glad I took her class. I love her class. She is a tough grader but once you know what she expects, you will do well. She made you work for the grade. I failed my first paper because I was lazy and didn't know what her criteria was. But when I knew, I got As on my other two papers and bumped my grade to an A-.
Professor Hanselman is great. If you want to improve your writing she's the best person to take a class with. I'm taking her for WR100 as well. She's a tough grader, but she curves according to participation and attendance which is great. There are no extra credits for hard work. She's not at all bias. Take her if you can!!
She is the best professor that I have ever met!!! She is so encouraging and kind. Also, for this class, there is not too much homework. You only need to read some articles and then discuss them in class. Also, three major papers. The class is not like a class, it more likes a relax conversation, and she always respect everyone's opinion.
Even though I did fairly well, I had a hard time coping up with the lectures and the homework and the class was tough.
PROFESSOR HANSELMAN IS THE BEST!! If you want to improve your writing skills, she is the best professor to go to. I took her for 2 semesters straight and am planning to take her for the 3rd time. She is a tough grader but that's what makes you so much better by the end.
Great professor. Cares about you. Great teacher
I took WR98 from Professor Hanselman last semester and she is the best. Classes are interesting and discussion driven. Workload is normal and importantly she is caring, supportive and she wants you to succeed. Definitely take writing from her. I took WR100 form this semester too.
I also took WR98 from Professor Hanselman last semester. Her WR100 class is amazing with presentations and group work and 2 papers so workload is not heavy. She such a caring, amazing and sweet professor and you should definitely take WR100 form her too.
She's a very tough grader, it seems impossible to get an A in her class. She cares about attendance a lot. Overall she's not a mean person, but not a friendly one either.
She is a good professor however she values zero creativity and she is very structure based on grading. In this class you will learn a lot but your GPA is gonna be in pain. You will learn how to write a very structured paper. If writing has something to do with your future take her, if you are just doing it because you have to avoid her.
She is a very nice professor. Classes are fun and everybody has chance to participate. Gives good feedback. Would definitely take her class again.
Don't take her unless you don't want to experience your GPA in pain
Don't take her!
very disorganized.....
Harsh grader....
DON'T TAKE HER CLASS
She is a good professor however she values zero creativity
Don't take her class if you do well in writing.
Tons of homework... not good professor.
don't take her class!
Professor Hanselman is one of the best professors I had so far. She is very helpful with essay drafts and always gives good feedback, which in the end pays off with a good grade on your paper. She is very understanding and caring about her students. Homework is easily manageable.
She is definitely a harsh grader and has tons of hws... When you are having the meeting with her and discussing your draft, she tells you nothing about most parts and will points out these mistakes in the final paper, which drops your grade drastically down to B and B- (class average).
Don't take her! I do not know what is the difference between spending 10 hours and 1 hour on the paper, perhaps is just a deflation from B to B-. She is a harsh grader and does not provide insightful feedbacks for darts, which lowers your grade in the final draft.
She's good person, but she is a serious tough grader. You would not get good grade unless you are on the expert level.
Dont take her if you care about your GPA.
Prof Hanselman is very caring and accessible during office hours, but she did grade harshly. I received A- for both of the major papers and managed to get A because of in-class participation. She'll give you one letter grade higher if you participated fully during classes She is indeed very kind and I would definitely take her classes again.
Really hard to impress on papers. Harsh grader and does not provide meaningful feedbacks on draft papers.
I did neither learn something useful for writing nor improve my GPA. She is very strict with her own criteria and has many homework. The papers are long and complex, while she gives you low grade with average around B or B-. It is hard to get even an B+ in papers. Don't take her if you care about your overall GPA.
She is a nice professor overall, but is strict on grading. Lots of papers. The topic is boring, not the course.
GPA in pain. Overall it's a relaxing class and she is approachable during office hours.
Don't choose her if you have other options.
DON'T TAKE HER.
Lots of readings and hws...
Not a good professor. Cares about attendance a lot and is a tough grader.
Don't take her unless you want your GPA in pain.
Tons of hw...
It's a hard course.
She is overall a nice professor. However, she values zero creativity and is a harsh grader who gives Bs to everyone.
Avoid her! When I realize how hard it is to impress her, the drop period has passed, and I ended up with B for all my papers which I spent times editing, asking her questions during office hours, and working with tutor centre. She gives useless feedbacks for first drafts, but will then have many excuses to give you low grades for final drafts.
Tough grader and values zero efforts. She says she will curve based on participation. But in fact, she will give your final grade based on her own opinion. Almost every students receives B or B- for most assignments and papers.
Work like a dog for every paper, but still received a low grade. Don't spend to much time on her papers because you will receive the same low grade of B and B-. She never tells you what yo should do, but will always find excuses for low grades. Didn't learn many things, and she is disorganized. Not recommended if you gave alternatives.
My only B in BU is from her class.
I actually am shocked she has such negative reviews. I LOVED this class. Hanselman was so understanding and caring (especially during the whole Corona thing). My class adored her. She is funny, sweet, and realistic. I loved the discussion based format of the class. It also helped that the people in my class were all very excited to participate.
She is a super though grader. Don't expect to get an A. But you will learn a lot and work for it.
LOVED her course. She is nice, funny, supportive, and engaging. You need to work hard if you want to get an 'A' or above, but she gives homework to let students grow to the fullest --- You will see at the end of the semester! If you ask her for a help, she will definitely help you, so I recommend that you take the advantage of her accessibility.
This class has got to be my freshman fall favorite. This WR 120 class had a theme: Frankenstein. Her grading rubric is so clear. If you do all of the assignments, extra assignments, you will get a good grade. Participation and class discussion really matter, otherwise, it will be such an awkward class. Overall I loved it!
She is the nicest professor ever. For WR153, she used a grading contract. As long as you complete your assignments on time and read the book that is assigned, you'll do good.
Professor Hanselman is by far my favorite professor I've ever taken during my time at BU. She is so understanding, fun in class, and treats her student with the utmost respect. She gives lots of assignments, but they are all beneficial for the class. She operates on a grading contract and is overall just so amazing. I LOVE HER PLEASE TAKE HER!!!!
I love this class and the community that she creates everyday. Heavy workload in the beginning with reading but it tapers off to a couple of assignments and papers. Really easy, fair grading, if you do the (not that much) work, you get an A. She actually treats her students like they are genuine human beings, something I've never experienced at BU.
Prof. Hanselman is one of the best profs. She cares about her students and treats us like human beings instead of grinding machines. She uses grading contracts and actually wants us to succeed in her class. She's very understanding and will grant extensions and later presentation dates. Truly one of the best professors I have worked with at BU.
I have done grading contracts in the past but Professor Hanselman grades you on your efforts. If you just do all the work required, you are guaranteed a B. You have to do extra activities to get an A in the class (mini presentations, writing, etc). You can tell she cares a lot about her students and she's accessible outside of class! Love her!!
It is very easy to get an A in this class, you only need to do extra credits. She does not grade regarding on the quality of the paper but rather if you do the work with all the criteria she is asking for. You have total control over you grade. She is also a great professor, you will definitely have fun and improve your writing skills
She is the best writing teacher! She is friendly and kind. It is easy to get A if you do the work. None of them are complex or challenging, and she reached out to every student and understood you!
Prof. Hanselman is an amazing professor. She is caring and respectful to all her students. After she changed her grading contract, it is very straightforward to get a good grade in her course. The only thing you need to do is to complete your assignment seriously. Not only that, you can learn a lot about writing in this course. Really recommend!!!
She uses a grading contract, so you know exactly what you need to do to get an A. It is very possible to get an A. If you do the bare minimum you get a B, though. A is certainly achievable. I had her for EN120 Frankenstein. Never thought I'd enjoy Frankenstein as much as I did. Great class overall for first years doing the writing requirement.
Prof. Hanselman is the best professor I had in BU. Whenever I needed an extension, she always supported me, was never harsh about it. If you are an international student and feel shy when speaking english, prof. Hanselman is the best professor you can have. She is never judgmental, creates a very comfortable class environment. Easy A class.
This professor has a noticeable tendency to favor certain students, which impacts the overall fairness of the class. Their approach often leaves many feeling overlooked and unsupported. The inconsistency in grading and feedback is frustrating. Overall, this has been the most challenging and disappointing class experience. WORST PROFESSOR IN BU!!!!!
She grades all of our stuff on participation and has a grading contract that super easy to follow. Very east class, would recommend.
Dr Hanselman was an amazing professor during WR112 and WR120. She is very caring and can really make a writing class less uncomfortable and warmer! Also, her grading contract makes you don't worry so much about the grade.
Honestly my favorite English professor I've ever had. She has a grading contract so as long as you do your work with reasonable effort, come to class, and hand everything in on time, you are pretty much guaranteed an A. Aside from that, Prof. Hanselman is such a great person, and you can tell she really does care about her students.
With Prof. Hanselman, getting an A is extremely easy. She uses a grading contract. If you complete the basic assignments, you are guaranteed a B+. To achieve an A, you have turn in extra assignments mentioned in her grading contract, although they are super easy. Would recommend taking for an easy A.
i loved my WR153 class because of professor hanselman. she is super accessible outside of class and always wants what is best for you. her grading contract is a little bit annoying but it is not very hard to get an A- or A. she takes her classes really seriously and is always available to help all of her students and wants the best for them!
Professor Hanselman makes her expectations very clear. She is easy to reach outside of class, gives ample time for assignments, and really lets her students show their creativity. Overall, the content is not hard as long as you do the readings and come to class ready to discuss. The tasks to get an A are actually very fun, not hard.
Extremely caring and accessible after class. She encourages everyone to participate and makes class fun with her grading criteria (Kahoots, movie/show powerpoints, epic fail to get an A in class), and scavenger hunts we did. The requirements to get an A are straightforward and pretty easy. I would 100% take her class again.
She is a great person who cares a lot about her students and always has feedback for how to improve. Class structure is a bit confusing but if you have questions she will clear it up. Class in contract graded so if you put in the work you can get whatever grade you want.
Professor Hanselman is a really nice person, but when it comes to her class, she can be a bit demanding. She always encourages group participation and discussion, which can sometimes make the lessons feel longer or drag out certain topics. Her grading contract makes it easy to earn an A if you keep up with the tasks.
