O-chem is inevitably difficult. But Lievens does absolutely all she can to help you understand it. Quizzes and exams were always fair and based on exactly what was taught in lecture. Lectures are VERY helpful but move fast-- I often found myself unable to keep up in my notes, but ALL lectures are recorded and posted online! HIGHLY recommend!
curves lab, quiz grade, and grade on the final (overall class not curved). Lab is annoying but you have to do it regardless of teacher. Her lectures are very good and quizzes based off lecture (6). lots of info and goes very fast which is what makes the class difficult, have to study alot for the quizzes but very fair. video capture
AMAZING Ochem professor. Truly cares about students and understanding. Quizzes/final are hard but exactly like the practice ones and is all based off of notes from lecture. never tests things she didn't emphasize/teach. Take her for 8A/B. Just study notes/practice rxns a lot. Attend her office hours too.
Insane amount of homework(graded on accuracy), quizzes and exam are based off the smallest three word sentence she'll say in lecture so you absolutely have to write down every word that comes out of her mouth. Applies a very small curve to the final but nothing for the course. Does not release grades until the end of the course.
6 quizes , masteringchem homework weekly, and a curved final. Lots of homework, get chegg youll thank yourself. Dont waste your time going to class, except on quiz days of course. Her lectures are recorded. She has so much material to cover she talks fast and being able to pause and rewind for note taking is amazing.
Lieven's is a good professor, but this class is still hard. Averages on quizzes were 40-60%. My advice: go to class, take mediocre notes, watch the lecture vids @ home and rewrite good notes. DO THE WORKSHEETS SHE POSTS ON CANVAS. For lab, go to office hours to double check answers, TA's can be nitpicky. She curves, but must put in work to get A.
A hard class for sure. It's 2 units but requires the work of a 4/5 unit class. 6 quizzes throughout the quarter with the lowest scored one being dropped at the end of the quarter. Luckily podcasts the class so you don't have to go to lecture unless there's a quiz. For me, watching podcasts was better than going to class since you can pause.
Dr. Lievens stimulated my interest in ochem and made it easier than what everyone else made seem like. She could go a bit too fast while lecturing and sometimes speeds through critical material that is needed for homework assignments. The assignments are somewhat manageable and very helpful if you read the textbook/canvas handouts
She is such a legendd honestly. She makes ochem understandable yes its a lot of work but her notes make it make sense. Must get the basic concepts of ochem and then read her notes as she builds upon them throughout the quarter and you can see the patterns in the mechanisms through her notes. Love her the best ochem professor at davis
Her lecture is super clear and she is rather knowledgeable of the study materials. Her practice quizzes are very similar to actual quizzes with some modifications tho. She does not have any midterms but 6 quizzes throughout the quarter(with the lowest drop at the end). Her final is challenging but doable. She only curves the final exam. Like her!
So much homework!!!
I don't want to learn chemistry anymore after taking this class. She can not explain the principles clearly. It's hard to get a nice grade.
She's not as good as other chemistry teachers I had before. I don't think her lectures are good to learn knowledge. You can go to other teachers' lectures while taking her class.
I don't know how Lievens has such high ratings. Her fist always covers anything she's talking about on the projector so the entire lecture is a game of catch-up. This class was more emotionally and mentally draining for me than any of my classes all quarter, and it made me work harder than my 5 unit classes did. Good luck to future generations...
Super difficult class. Lievens knows her stuff but her explanations never make sense. I felt like I never really learned anything. Quizzes are impossible. Mastering chem homework is a drag.
CHE 8 is supposed to be the easy series, and it's reflected here. It's frustrating when she says things will happen and won't go into an explanation because it's outside of the scope of the class, but that's not her fault. Quizzes are straightforward but every question counts - minor mistakes add up. It's possible to get an A (8A and 8B).
This was the hardest class I have ever taken in Davis. Thanks to Lievens, the chances of getting into a profession in the health field is incredibly slim due to her class. Her exams were extremely difficult, and no matter how hard you try to memorize everything, it will never be good enough. Professor lievens is cool, but my future is ruined.
Heres the thing. Shes BY FAR the best option out of all the chem profs at Davis. Her lectures are very clear for the most part and theres very few surprises on the quizzes. Its ochem, so its hard, but if you gotta take it, take it with Lievens. She also posts video podcasts so you dont have to go to class if you dont want to.
After taking Lievens for 2 consecutive quarters (8A and 8B), I've finally learned how to survive her class. Don't attend lectures, they will only frustrate u. Instead, watch the lecture podcasts and pause and replay parts as you need; this will take up a lot more time but will drastically improve your grade. This class is really hard, but u canDoIt
Took her for both 8A and 8B, she's a goof prof. but grading in labs and quizzes was a bit harsh( little to no partial credit) as long as you study a lot you'll be fine but it you really need to put in the work or you will definitely fail. Final is curved and so are quizzes depending on the average of each section so you can be curved down.
She does lectures extremely well, but definitely seems to work under the assumption that students are going back and using lecture capture heavily. A high degree of familiarity is required pair with a borderline absurd amount of information (for 8B in particular). Its too easy to start drowning in this class if you let up for even a couple lectures
Although the easier OChem series, 8B was still very difficult. Lievens expects students to know an almost impossible amount of detail on various topics, even if only mentioned for about 4 seconds in lecture. Best way to learn is to utilize lecture captures, forget lectures. No curving done in class, only final is curved. Be prepared to work!
CHE8A should not be only 2 units. With only 2 50-minute lectures per week, Lievens does her best to teach A LOT of material in this very short amount of time, and she does well, she also holds weekly review sessions to help out. To succeed you need to put in a lot of extra hours of your own time outside of class. Lievens cares about her students.
This class is insane. Not sure if it's Lievens fault, but the fact that this class is 2 units is outrageous. It's possible to do well, but plan on spending 10+ hrs/week just practicing ochem. 45% of the grade is based on 20min in-class quizzes in which you're not given enough time to complete and 40% is the final. Good luck you'll need it
Lievens is great! Her lectures are videocast, she's helpful in office hours, and she's hilarious! HW due every week, 6 quizzes (1 drop), and the final (40%). Practice quizzes just like the real thing. Chem is my nemesis, but getting a good grade is possible! I literally went to EVERY office hour, review session, studied a ton, and hired a tutor.
Sarah is a really clear lecturer and posts her podcasts, as well as tutorials for learning the material. CHE8B is much harder than 8A, but her office hours are helpful and she's super funny. HER CURVE IS LIFE! She doesn't curve the whole class, but curves final (over 1/3 of ur total grade), lab, and quizzes. Best choice for orgo at this school.
I love her! Chemistry is always a subject I've struggle with (I had Gulacar for Gen chem and barely passed always). Lievens is just so clear in her lectures that I genuinely enjoy going to class and learning for once. I also think she grades very fair and she gives you a heads up of what she expects, so there's no surprises. She's a great teacher.
I took all my OC series with Lievens and she is the best professor I've taken at UC Davis. The classes were a lot to take in, but it was doable. I never attended lecture and podcasted the entire course. If you put in the time and work, its an easy A.
Look, this class is hard. But shes super fair, and if you really know the material and study the practice quizzes youll be fine. For 8A its doable to get an A with normal effort, for 8B you have to work REALLY hard. The homework was kind of hard and finicky (and VERY long). Shes super funny. Look her up on YouTube.
Lievens had clear and to the point lectures, posts lecture notes and podcasts, and is pretty much the best you can hope for out of Ochem professors. That being said, its still ochem - lots of studying required for 6-7 quizzes and the final! And weekly homework (use Chegg, its a lifesaver).
The lecture is ok, but she taught the hardest material in only one week. This class take way more time than a 2 units class should take. There are many quizs that you don't have enough time to complete. The final is long. There are a lot homework.
Way too much work for a 2 unit, but she gives problem solving sessions every week and lots of TA office hours. Overall, way too hard for a 2 unit and took a lot of time to learn. Her lectures are so rushed since we only met twice a week for 50 mins each. This class needs less material or more lecture time.
Lievens class is only graded on 3 things: the quizzes, homework, and the final. However, this class is not hard if you work for it. I was barely passing Gen Chem and in this class I am easily getting an A. You do not have to attend lecture because she does lecture capture videos but it is always nice to show up.
She does the best she can with the limited time she has. The quizzes and exams are based completely off the in-class notes so make sure you have those memorized. There aren't any tricks on exams but a lot of self-study is required in order to fully understand the material.
Lievens gives very professional but comprehensive explanations on organic mechanisms. Her notes are really organized, and her office hours are very helpful. She also provides some practice exams which exactly match what she would like us to know for midterms. Definitely will take her again
I took Sarah for both 8A and 8B and I loved her so much! She is funny and explains things very well using interesting personification of the atoms! She answers student questions well and her quizzes/final are very straight forward with plenty of resources online. She is such a cool lady, I would definitely take her again if chemistry wasn't so hard
She is the toughest grader. 6 quizzes, 1 gets dropped. They are 8% of your grade EACH. they arent curved, many of the avgs were around 45%. Final is curved(36% of your grade) She is a good teacher but she expects you to understand and memorize every single detail. this class is a lot of work and you have to stay on top of it every day.
Really appreciate herI learn so much information about organic chemistry.
Chem 8B is a tough class, but Lievens made it bearable! You're gonna have to put in alot of work outside of class since there's so much to remember and organic chemistry is just a hard subject in general to learn. She has good notes and study the practice quizzes to prepare for the quiz
Dr. Lievens is the best there is for o-chem. Go to her office hours! Shes a gem there because you can ask for the most complicated problem on a specific topic, and shell break it down for you. Lectures are captured and posted on Canvas, and she has review sessions before every exam. Practice exams reflect actual exams. Youre in good hands!
She's really nice and caring! Has all resources you'll need to pass the class. Her lectures are organized and notes easy to understand. Just watch videos, read textbook, and do HW problems and you'll pass. Weekly quizzes but they're like practice quizzes. The final wasn't so bad, just get ready to memorize a lot (reagents, products, pKas, etc)
Worst chemistry course even taken for the 2 series. Her curve was barely helpful. Came to her class hoping that she was a good lecturer but was totally wrong. Had to study for the test by watching Enderle's video.
The lecture itself is fine, but I usually need to pay full attention in class because she speaks fast. One thing that I want to complain about is that she barely curve, so be prepared to study hard.
Since she handwrites her notes, they can be very sloppy and confusing at times. She didn't end up curving the final very much, even though the majority of students found it very difficult. And she gives out - grades which most chem 2 profs don't do. He lectures are moderately entertaining but she wastes a lot of time outlining and giving factiods.
She writes out her notes, but her handwriting can be very difficult to read at times. It's best to watch her lecture videos after class since she goes very fast and it is hard to take notes while listening. Her exams were a medium difficulty and there is no curve (only when necessary). The homework given was helpful, but very time-consuming.
A very caring professor that really presents chemistry in a way that shows why chemistry can be so fascinating. Her tests are fairly straightforward and designed in a way such that it's hard to score a high A but very possible to get a B or high C. You'll likely end a mid B in her class if you do HW and lab and get Cs on exams.
Lievens was a good professor, but honestly I felt that she needed to curve the tests, especially the final. She assigns a lot of online homework so prepare for that, but it does help you learn the material and is a good study resource. Personally, I felt that her lectures weren't that great. Her handwriting was sloppy, and she went way too fast.
Worst professor ever. Always making the jokes only she laughs and interrupt the pace of the class. No slides only paper notes with no logic. No conclusion parts. And if you are a international student who is not very good at fast English lecture, DO NOT take her course. Her practice exam is meaningless.
i struggled greatly in this class because she would not go into that much depth and would go extremely fast on the concepts. her exams are extremely difficult and not really as fair as the other professors. after taking other ochem professors, I can say that she was not as good as the others.
Handwrites her notes which are illegible at times. Goes through lecture very fast. I learned more from the online homework than lecture. Enderle's reader was more helpful than going to lecture. She doesn't really lecture she reads her notes to you. Tests were fair similarly structured to past 2c exams. She'll ask more complex questions than on HW.
Worst chem professor at UC Davis!! Don't choose her.
Simply the BEST chemistry professor! She made ochem so much fun to learn, and she is that kind of mad scientiest I'm inspired to be haha
Her notes are difficult to read and feel disorganized at times. She doesn't make it clear what she expects students to know on quizzes. The homework is often completely unrelated to what she expects us to know for quizzes. I would not take her again.
I honestly do not recommend this professor. she did not upload any quizzes onto canvas so you had no clue what your quiz scores were in comparison to everyone else (average score). She expects you to remember the smallest details. Overall I would recommend Daniel N. for the O-chem series (exams are fair and he curves).
Very solid professor. Knows what she is teaching and communicates it very well. Class itself is hard simply because ochem is a difficult subject, but she doesn't try to fail you or trick you in any way. Sometimes her exams could be difficult though because she might test you on small details, and she doesn't curve which kind of sucks.
ALLLL RIGHTY FOLKS!!!! Lievens is a solid prof. She uses a lot of analogies to explains concepts (many doesnt like them too much). Her test questions are fair and have same structures as her practice tests. Overall, she is one of the better ochem prof. Howd we sound?
OChem is hard- but Lievens does her best to teach us. She is a little quirky and sporadic, but she really wants to help students. She lecture-casts all lectures (which is nice, she writes fast). Do well on the homework and labs, and decent on the quizzes/final (50-60%) and you will pass
Lieven class is usually pretty tough in terms of the material. As a teacher, she does give you a lot of good lectures. Use her extra handouts that she posts on Canvas. Do practice exams. Study for the weekly quizzes in discussion. Two midterms and one final. Can get regrades. There was 4 problem sets for us. Those were hard but good prep for exams.
Her notes can be very disorganized, and not lectures are concise enough. Also, she tends to ramble a lot. The good thing about her though is that the practice quizzes she gives can be extremely similar to her quizzes. Also, she uses ALL of the lecture time and often goes overboard the alotted class period, so be mindful of that.
Very clear and engaging lecturer. Her personality really comes through during the lectures so you feel like one of your incredibly smart friends is just telling you about o chem. Because she's such a good instructor, average was fairly high and there was a minimal curve. Definitely one of the bests professors but makes you work for a good grade.
Allllllrighty folks get ready to enjoy the ochem world!
Dr. Lievens is a great lecturer! I struggle with Ochem but her lectures help me a lot and make me willing to work hard to get good grades. I love her energy in class, makes ochem a lot less tedious. Her exams aren't too bad, as long as you study every day and do her practice exams. I wish i have her again for 118b and 118c.
She LOVE ochem and she is super positive in lecture. She explains the material really well, but can speak a bit fast. Her lectures were videoed so lectures aren't mandatory, but i highly recommend attending to she her full enthusiasm. Her tests were extremely fair and she has homework that were SUPER similar to the tests questions.
Exams are hard and only a little bit curve is provided. The whole class average grade is C. I cannot understand her lecture and this course ruined my GPA.
Lievens definitely makes you study and work for the grade that you want. She only gives out quizzes and they are difficult. You only get 20 minutes to do a front and back quiz, so make sure you don't just know how to do problems, you have to be able to them quickly and accurately. She also has a lot of vocab on her quizzes which I didn't like.
Lievens is a really good lecturer. Probably your best bet for the 118 series. Provides lots of study materials and is very helpful in office hours.
An organic chem class without a curve due to coronavirus scares in winter. Her lectures are clear and alright but fast-paced. I rarely could pay attention let alone write my notes cause she moves so fast. Hard test! The average on the final was a (60) and she didn't curve the final. Way to hard not to get some help. Waste of 3 months of my life.
This class is no joke. Lievens is a decent professor, but you have to be on top of your game to do well. Her practice exams are identical to the midterms/final, so take those multiple times. Homework often has new material not covered yet. She writes super fast so you'll have to rewatch her lectures online. Funny and quirky though. Tiny/no curve.
OChem is hard no matter what. Her lecture notes are good but the way she explains material is confusing. She speaks like atoms have feelings or talks about atoms going to buffets constantly?? Start studying 4 days ahead for quizzes as theres HEAPS of material. Don't play in this class. If I had to take the final, I would have failed the class.
I really like her teaching style, although she does move fairly fast. Her quizzes are super fair and honestly really easy if you study the discussion manual. Her handwriting can be a little difficult to read sometimes as her H's look like N's which can be confusing since spelling matters!! Barely any curve though so you really have to work for it.
Ochem is hard in general a tonnn of material to learn. No midterms just 6 quizzes you need to start studying for a couple days before in advance. Her notes are clear but how she explains is not. Super faced paced.
She's a clear lecturer and quizzes are based entirely on her lectures. There's a lot of online hw with mastering chemistry, but otherwise just rewatch lectures and memorize the notes and you should be ok.
Sarah Lievens made organic chemistry straight forward and understanding. She taught it as if she were a cool and smart classmate explaining it to you. Her bi-weekly quizzes were just like the practice quizzes and she gave ample practice. There was no curve for this class because everyone did relatively well! A solid 8/10 professor :)
I really enjoy her lectures and the fact that she splits them up for quizzes to make you engage with the material the moment you learn it. Online classes have been tough but I think she really is nailing it despite the novel platform. The relatable descriptions that she uses to explain are engaging and useful :)
Lots of practice materials similar to the exams, but even then the class is still pretty hard. Her problem sets are difficult and a little annoying, but they help you learn the material well. Beware though: she expects you to remember small details from her lectures and her spectroscopy can get pretty hard.
Stay on stay on top of things and you'll do fine. Unfortunately, I learned this really late into the quarter. She's a good lecturer when you've studied the topics beforehand. Besides her lectures, watch youtube videos! They were more helpful than the textbook. It's really difficult to get a good grade on the HW, so don't do it hours before.
I took her for 118A and didn't realize how good she was until I had another prof for 118B, so I took her again for 118C. She is the best chem prof at UC Davis. Lectures are very easy to follow, but I recommend rewatching them to study. Lengthy hw and lots of practice worksheets. Good practice for tests. Very do-able to get an A.
Prerecorded lectures that was split into 2 or 3 shorter videos but had quizzes after each video. Hw through mastering chem. 6 quizzes worth 45% of grade but dropped one. Not really active on piazza so you rely on other students. Goes over things really fast and doesn't spend a lot of time on things that showed up on the quizzes. Flexible on final
Professor Lievens was great! I loved how organized her class was, lecture notes were easy to follow and helped a lot. 6 quizzes with lowest 1 dropped was 45% of grade, rest was HW, participation "quiz" & final. Since it was online this quarter Professor was very accommodating to the current events and showed compassion to her students. Recommend!!
Easily one of the best teachers you can have for the Chem 8 series. Ochem in general is pretty difficult, but as long as you practice problems that she provides and study before quizzes, you should be fine. I took this course online, and she accommodated for it very generously. Optional final, extended hw periods, and overall curve on 5 quizzes
Lievens is great. Ochem is hard, but Lievens definitely helped make everything easier to understand. Her exams were very similar to her practice exams and worksheets (she recycled questions) so do as many of those as you can. She was very accommodating during covid and riots.
She made ochem really easy bro. Since all classes are online bc of the pandemic she let the quizzes (no MT's, just 6 quizzes and final) be open note. That made them really easy. She also made the final optional for those who need it bc of all the protests going on (BLM matter btw, go sign some petitions). Overall a really kind and considerate prof
Lievens made what easily could have been a nightmare challenging but doable. She's truly a great lecturer and makes it very clear what will be on quizzes.
Dr. Lievens is the best. Had her for 118A and 118C and got A- in both. Wish I could take her for 118B. Her lectures are crystal clear. The quizzes and hw help to better understand the material. She cares about her students and is always ready to help in OH, over email or on piazza. Chemistry department should be grateful to have her as a teacher.
Professor Lievens has been a pleasure to have for 118C! Obviously with the plethora of things that has gone on during Spring 2020, she has been nothing but accommodating and understanding during online school, which I really appreciate. Her lectures are AMAZING and very clear, and her tests are fair and reflective of the material. 10/10 take her!!!
Lievens is the best ochem prof i have ever had at UCD! Her lectures are incredible and she is such a caring and funny person, makes lectures enjoyable. Exams are fair, I used lectures + textbook to study. She also provides a ton of resources so if you put in the time, you should do well. Amazing prof, 10/10 def recommend!!!
Out of the ochem professors I took Lievens was the best at teaching and the most organized. She is very clear about what she expects you to know. The material is hard but she's great.
Best ochem professor in Davis, amazing enough that this is my first RMP review. Didn't need the textbook, she provides loads of practice material that help you on the exams and homework. She made ochem very enjoyable and is nice during office hours. Her lectures are very clear, since she writes the notes out and makes fun analogies.
Great lecturer and gives lots of practice material similar to the exam (I didn't even need to do the textbook homework). You need to study a lot, but she gives you everything you need to succeed in her class. She's also very responsive to emails which I appreciated.
Took her for 118c after taking her for 118a. Although Ochem is extremely difficult, she makes it much easier to understand and gives a lot of resources. Her lectures can be long and contain lots of info but everything on the exams comes from the lectures. I didn't open the tetxbook once in the two quarters I took her. Definitely the best choice.
Best chem prof at davis. Her explanations really make the ochem stuff stick. Her tests are really fair but study and understand the stuff! You will be happy with her as a teacher
Had Lievens for 118A and 118C. She's a really good lecturer and a fair tester. EVERYTHING from her exams comes from lecture and worksheets, but her class is still really hard (especially 118C) because there's so much material. Class barely has a curve because averages tend to be high, but she does make adjustments if needed.
I had her for 8A and B, and she's absolutely amazing. Everything on tests are from the notes, so study your notes as carefully as possible. This class is much harder than 8A, there was so much memorization so I'm thankful it was online for me because she made it open note. You won't get a better ochem prof than Lievens, whether online or in person.
Lievens is hands down the best choice for ochem. Tips to do well: This class is exponentially harder than 8A so prepare to work hard. Watch lecture at least once, go to office hours, do all of her practice problems not just the homework. I wish labs weren't graded so harshly and she would be more responsive on piazza and email but she's good
It's organic chemistry, it's hard. That being said, Dr. Lievens is a solid choice for a professor and I recommend trying have her as a professor. The quizzes reflected the material presented and she tried her best to insert humor into the lectures (usually by being quirky). Labs graded harshly, lectured overtime, and final was hard, but solid 8/10.
Lievens does an amazing job with her lectures. Our class averages were pretty high for tests, which is something that is rarely said about chemistry. Has concept checking quizzes after every lecture which you can retake as many times as you want. Lots of practice material for this class. Just do your work and you'll be fine.
Avoid if possible! Personally, I like Nasiri more than her.
She is a great teacher and her lectures are all you need to know. Her extra practice on modules is helpful but there are no surprises on her tests. She is very predictable and gives great feedback!
I appreciated her teaching style. Her lectures were broken up so they never felt too long. She offers students a ton of practice materials. Tests were straightforward and were similar in nature to the practice ones. As is true for any organics class, you will need to study and practice a lot to succeed. If you do, it is not impossible to do well.
Personally I found her teaching style didn't always make sense. She's very analogy-heavy, which can be confusing. Discussion quizzes are harder than midterms. Midterms and final are similar to practice tests, but in order to do well you need to study A LOT. She does give really good resources, so overall solid choice.
Professor Lievens does not try to trick you on exams. Her exams are very similar to her practice exams. As long as you do all the practice she gives you from day one, you will do well. The only complaint I have is that there isn't enough time on exams, but other than that she is a great choice! Stay on top of your work and you will get an A.
Dr. Lievens is hilarious, but her tests will not make you happy because time is extremely limited compared to the never-ending exam. You better study the vocabs to do well on her exams. Her lecture notes look messy and the ideas are jotted down everywhere, liking writing on scrap paper. Be ready to watch the Organic Chemistry Tutor guy on Youtube.
She's a great ochem prof, she knows the material really well and her examples in her lectures really helped me understand the material. The online exams take a long time, so it requires a lot of stamina. I recommend reading the textbook to solidify your understanding in the class, and go to her office hours.
Lievens is a solid choice for CHE118. Her lectures were great and easy to follow. She also doesn't like to trick you on exams/discussion quizzes. That being said, if you don't know the material beforehand, don't expect to do well on them because the exams are very long. You should be fine if you study ahead of time.
As an ochem professor, Lievens is a great and solid choice, you can't go wrong. Yes the course content is hard, but she gives it in the easiest way to understand it. We had 2 midterms, a final, problem sets, and discussion quizzes. The problem sets and quizzes help you better understand the content to later help with exams.
Lievens is a solid choice for ochem. Everything she tests you on is reflective of her lectures. Super helpful and genuinely cares. She provides a lot of practice problems which are super helpful. Take her, you wont regret it. Also her name is pronounced "le-vins" not "lee-vins" (was mispronouncing it the entire quarter!)
Taught ochem in the best way possible. Very fair quizzes and midterms, so small curve. Stressed learning concepts in additional to solving problems. I recommend watching lecture videos bc she talks really fast , I struggled to keep up in class. Ochem is very hard in general, a lot of work required, but Lievens is your best bet for least frustration
Lievens is a great organic chem professor! She is knowledgeable and she will sometimes provide great analogies toward molecular properties. Her lectures are organized but sometimes her notes are a bit messy. The practice quizzes and modules are a must if you want to do well in this class. The exams are a bit long but they are manageable.
Dr. Lievens is definitely a professor who cares about her students. She provides a lot of good resources for practice. However, her lecture style isn't for everybody- her tests are memorization heavy (lots of vocab), and you have to rely on the textbook to better understand the concepts. Kind of hyped because the test averages are high.
Professor Lievens is the best lecturer I have met, she explains concepts very clearly and in a very interactive way. She doesnt put anything that she doesnt teach in the exams or quizzes, everything straight from discussion manual or lecture. She has a ton of practice problems and problem sets that solidify the material. Great Professor!
Professor Lievens is hands down the best chemistry professor I've had at Davis, I have Nasiri this quarter for 118B and I miss her. She explains concepts well in depth and with examples and is very accommodating if you need help. Definitely make sure you keep up with lectures and the practice she gives out and do the discussion manual practice!
Lievens made the online class bearable during fall quarter 2020. Exams were open note & her lectures were much better than Nurco's. The discussion quizzes were pretty doable if you studied ahead of time. You do have to watch her lectures & study ahead of time even if the exams are open note since there is a lot of material covered. Best ochem prof!
Her teaching is fine but her exams with different versions are pretty long. I don't recommend to take her in remote settings.
She is good professor and is passionate about chemistry. However she teaches the material as if we are very capable of it already. She skims important information, she includes in exams. She had 6 quizzes while teaching online, and they were more like exams. Her quizzes were somewhat hard and they weere vocab heavy, which I would not expect in chem
This class was absolutely the worst way this class could have been made to fit the online format. Shes really good at teaching but makes her tests IMPOSSIBLE. I have never received anything less than an A+ in a chemistry course and now I barely received an A- coincidence? I think not! Dont recommend. Also she down curved our class.
Lievens was a good lecturer and presented info well. However, the rest of the class sucked. There's little to no curve. The online labs were graded very harshly despite the limited resources we had to complete them. The six "quizzes" were more like full on midterms. The final was absurdly long and difficult.
6 quizzes. Waaay too much material. Studied way more than for 4 units! Graded kinda brutal too. Final was hard af. Quizzes are such a time crunch. Focus on the lectures and be familiar w/ mechanisms and make a doc to command F content if you take this online. She teaches well compared to the other profs but barely curves :/
Professor Lievens did an incredible job teaching ochem this quarter. Her quizzes (6 of them) were difficult but not if you make study sheets based on examples. I did not do any extra work outside of copying mechanisms to prep for quizzes and my average was an 87%. Write everything down from lecture and you will be fine. Best chem class I have had
A legend and chemistry god. If you pay attention to lectures and take good notes you will be successful in her class. Tests are very fair but with no curve if the exam average is a C.
Lievens was a great choice for ochem. The class is difficult (way more difficult than 8a) and she made the transition really smooth. There are 6 quizzes and a final which were all doable if you took good notes and utilized her worksheets online. Overall I really enjoyed lievens.
Ochem is tough, but Dr. Lievens is a great professor and good at teaching. Her lectures are dense and the work load is heavy, but that's expected for chemistry. She didn't make it an impossible work load like other chem professors I've had in the past. Honestly, I've hated chemistry for years but she actually made it interesting. Cute cat too!
DO NOT TAKE HER COURSE UNLESS YOU ARE READY TO DEVOTE YOURSELF INTO OCHEM !!! Ochem was already hard and Lievens made it even harder. The midterms and final are almost twice as long as normal (more time means more problems). Some problems on the discussion quiz that you have never heard of. There's never enough time and the grade is barely curved.
A good lecturer but the tests are RIDICULOUSLY LONG SERIOUSLY. the final was just as long as a standardized exam (like an SAT) it was about 96 spaces to fill. not only that, the questions on exams are extremely specific and she does NOT curve generously
Reports you even though you got a D or F on your midterms and finals. This professor does not want you to pass the class if you get a C as your grade.
She is one of my favorite professors at UC Davis. Her lectures are crystal clear and make learning the material very easy. The class has a really logical flow and if you do all of the practice problems (there are a lot) you can ace every test. You never have to wonder what you need to study.
Lievens is an amazing professor. The class is hard but that is o chem. She has great but long lectures. Very personable and was helpful in office hours or study sessions. Tiny curve though!
This is my second time taking Lievens, and I enjoyed 118C far more than 118A. I think part of that is Lieven's lecture style is more suited for 118C, which is primarily reactions. Exams are mostly fair, but spec is hard. Make use of her (many) resources-probably the best part about this class. Kinda time consuming, but getting an A is possible.
I was scared of organic chemistry, but now I am not afraid anymore. The lectures are very interesting and the resources the prof posted are useful! Be ready to study a lot outside the class.
Its ochem so take this with a grain of salt. Ive taken this lady 3 times and shes the better of the two ochem profs at UC Davis. She doesnt really care for students, wont answer ur emails, and expects you to teach everything to yourself. Your best bet is to do all the practice problems you can and to get your hands on her past exams.
awful handwriting, gave 45 min to do 22 questions for a quiz and to upload each one individually onto gradescope. felt like the workload of a 7 unit class honestly. was recommended by a lot of people not to take it but it was my only choice. suffering through it right now and it is a lot harder than necessary especially online
Only curves the final & each quiz feels like a midterm with very little time to complete it. Heavy workload in homework & lab and is graded harshly. You gotta teach yourself and hope for the best because her lecture notes are horrid. She tries to explain things using analogies but it only makes the material more confusing than it needs to be.
Have a quiz in each week which is based on her unclear lecture. She talks too fast like she teaches professors instead of undergraduate students. She don't care the "folks" who trying to follow her path. She don't upload her messy lecture notes, takes note by yourself if you want to pass this horrible class.
Professor talks too fast like a thunderstorm and we don't really know what she talks about. We can't understand lecture easily. Lecture notes are messy. She makes jokes which we don't understand and n0t funny, making harder to understand.
Ochem is generally tough if you don't put in work for this class, you will 100% fail. Make good use of your resources n do all the questions on the practice worksheets, & practice tests, you'll be okay. Take your time during lectures to understand. Took this class during covid so the pause button was a lifesaver. Overall, not the best but not bad.
Alrighty Folks, to be fair CHEM 8B is a tough course, but she made it even worse. Super lecture-heavy, talks really fast, and does not upload notes. The notes she does take during lectures are NOT legible and takes a while to decipher. Weekly midterms, no study guide and a final on EVERYTHING including labs that she fails to mention. Would not rec
my best ochem prof. lectures are dense but she emphasizes what you need to know and gives lots of examples. uploads tons of practice unlike my prev profs. I had her during covid & she was the only prof I had who was understanding that quarter. I missed a whole midterm & still passed the class. expectations are high but she cares about her students.
If you're planning on taking her for summer session i definitely do not recommend it!! Every week you have about 2 assignments on mastering chem, 2 labs instead of one, 6 hours or more of lecture, and a quiz! that was every week during summer session!! its a lot of work she also gave new material that was on the final that was the following day!
I had her during SSII and is online during that time. She has quiz which are like midterm for every week. But it is doable if you focus solely on that class and practice on the reaction practice she givens out and also pay attention to her lecture as she explain it really good. But it is manageable if you are only focus on that class.
Hands down the worst class I have taken thus far in my academic career, and I took 2 physics classes. I'm a studious stem major, but this was unmanageable spent every day, 10 hours/day studying in SS2 to fail/ just pass every exam. Unclear lectures, unnecessarily long, extra-hard exams. Inconsiderate of home/special circumstances. Good luck.
Lievens is a really good professor but there is a LOT of work for her class. The work helps you do better and understand the material. Go to her office hours and ask questions. It will clear up any misunderstandings from the lectures. I wish she would make it a little bit easier to get a good grade in the class, however she is better than Nasiri.
Quizzes every 2 weeks instead of midterms. Lectures were hard to follow & extremely dense. She never explains the connections btwn concepts or the importance/significance. Not sure why ppl say she's this amazing prof. Mediocre at best imo. Nothing special.
Lievens is a solid professor. All of her exams come from material in lecture and are doable with the practice and resources she provides to study. Overall her teaching style is not my favorite, she uses a bit too many analogies and quizzes are hard to keep up with but Ochem is a difficult class overall so just be prepared to work for your grade.
The material is hard- you can't avoid that- but Dr. Lievens is able to explain the topics with fantastic digestable and hilarious metaphors. She's highly knowledgeable and though I know I struggled I'd 1000% take this class with her again! Don't forget to do the participation quizzes though- they're only 5% but for understanding, they help.
This class is tough no other way to say it but her lectures makes it a lot more bearable. Tests are tough but fair. Beware that there isn't much of a curve.
Lievens is a great choice for the 118 series. I put in a ton of work into this class, and you likely will have to also if you want to succeed. The way she lectures is very clear and concise, and her tests/quizzes are definitely fair. One downside was the deceivingly hard vocab section on exams, which was definitely weird for an ochem class.
Was very nervous for this class since I sucked at gen chem but Prof Lievens is an absolute solid choice for ochem. Gave us lots of practice problems, old tests, freebie participation points, and homework assignments to help for quizzes. Even better if you have a good TA. Def requires a lot of work but doable. Wish I could take for 118B, def 118C!
Probably the more cogent choice for CHE118. Clear Lectures, tests entirely on lectured material. Relatively easy quizzes, no curve, except on final. 6 quizzes, 1 final. Textbook isn't necessary but I used it for review and extra study materials.
VERY fair in what she writes on her quizzes (every other week), and on her final exam. If you study the lecture and what she writes on her lecture notes then you'll be absolutely set. You'll also understand the material fairly well, it's not like you're cheating yourself out of learning the material by taking the easier prof.
The material is difficult to learn and the quizzes are hard but you will be likely to succeed if you practice a lot, some practice problems are also reused or slightly modified. That being said the lectures are too fast, her handwriting and abbreviations need some work, and I never really understood the metaphors used to explain certain concepts.
I took this class for fall quarter. The syllabus was fair. All quizzes (allowed 1 notecard) and 1 final (allowed half a piece of paper). Quiz material wasnt overly hard just do a lot of practice (look at HW and disc manual). 8 pts added to final exam score and small class curve. I highly recommend over Nasiri for sure. I ended up with an A :-)
Lectures are heavily metaphorical (ions getting married). Homework takes ages and are single submit, exact wording, 120+ question Canvas quizzes. Once put a concept we hadn't learned yet in lecture into the homework, then seemingly denied that fact. Allows 1 notecard front and back for quizzes. Scary thing is: better than the other ochem profs.
Bad handwriting
There is a lot of material, but she breaks it down pretty well. She provides lots of practice problems and is helpful during office hours. Prepare to take a lot of quizzes for both lecture and discussion. However, she allows you to have notes (flashcards), but there is limited time, so still study regardless. Otherwise, she was a good professor.
Amazing professor. Lectures and the overall course is very well constructed. She is very passionate about what she teaches, has a good personality, and gives interesting and understandable analogies. Nearly biweekly quizzes (quiz every two weeks) in lieu of midterms, weekly discussion quizzes, and one comprehensive final will determine your grade
Lievens has been teaching forever and has a great strategy for the 118A content. She speaks rather fast during lecture but was very accommodating by recording lectures and notes. She replaced two midterms with bi-weekly quizzes in addition to weekly discussion quizzes and bi-weekly problem sets so the course moves pretty fast.
Sarah lacks human empathy as she assigns problem sets with over 150 questions, six 20 minuet quiz's(that have 8ptp, 20+vocab,10+fill in the blank, synthesis, IUPAC, Mechanism, and spectroscopy) that arnt curved because she DOSNT CURVE, and don't forget about the labs. I suggest not even entertain the idea of taking her class. DAVIS CAN DO BETTER!
loved her for 118A, idk what happened but she was so bitter this quarter. the quizzes were brutal and unfair with the detail that she expected us to know. quiz every 3 lectures on the most minute details, and WAY too much for 20 mins. didn't teach well, sped through lectures, lots of hw due. class was overwhelming, even for an ochem course.
She provides tons of work that are worth lots of points and is very picky about the wording of lab answers. She has 6 quizzes each being 20 minutes but there are around 20 questions. The quizzes seem like midterms. She does not curve! Also, she claims to curve quizzes and lab grades but she is using standard grading and no curve actually occurs.
I have had a lot of bad professors but she wins. No empathy for any student. She expected us to literally only do ochem as if we have no any other classes. Her quizzes are crazy hard. Good luck if you have her because I suggest to wait for another professor.
There is no chill in this class at all, very cut-throat. The quizzes are timed at 20 min. but the sheer amount of content is comparable to midterms in 118b which were around an hour long. Its not the content that is terrible, its that you have no time to think, check your work, or even finish at all! Very little curving for the amount of difficulty
This class was horrible for me. She has no empathy for students. Quiz averages are pretty low and she barley curves. Take with literally any other professor.
The lectures are handwritten and it is difficult to separate and group the info she gives due to the lack of slides. The hw, quizzes, and labs are graded far too strictly and are made more difficult than what is necessary. The practice problems are inadequate preparation for the quizzes and final and she doesn't provide problems from the textbook.
This class was extremely difficult and quizzes every week or every 2 weeks were super stressful and they were all tough and are not easier than just having 2 midterms because there's just so much information. Labs were graded harshly. She's a good lecturer but handled the class logistics somewhat poorly. It's possible to get an A but very difficult
6 quizzes 20 mins each. Practice Set as HW. Lots of practices materials and practice quizzes that are REALLY helpful for the quizzes and final. PRACTICE IS THE KEY! Discussion is mandatory, and has a 10 min quiz at the beginning of each class. As long as you read the lab manual, you are good. Great professor, and really helpful during office hours.
Lectures were disorganized and assignments/quizzes required an insane recall of the tiniest details. Barely curves. Never enough time to finish the quizzes. I think the only way to do well is to somehow memorize the lectures in their entirety.
Her format for teaching ochem classes do not fit 118C. She would often forget to go over reactions for one section. ABSOLUTELY NOT ENOUGH TIME GIVEN ON THE QUIZZES. I'm quite good at ochem and every quiz was a battle for me. Since your other option is probably Nasiri, Lievens is admittedly the better choice. Helix is better than both.
This class itself was already difficult, but Lievens had to make our lives even more difficult by not giving us enough time on the quizzes. Lectures were fast-paced and packed with content, and she is not always very organized. The good thing is she provides lots of practice problems that look lik the problems on her quizzes, so do the problems.
Lievens is a fair and good ochem professor. The quizzes are only 20min which is difficult but not impossible doing the practice problems is the best way to prepare. She clearly outlines what is going to be on each quiz and provides ample resources for quiz. She lectures fairly fast but records all the lectures so you can take them at your own pace.
Gives quizzes instead of midterms, but the amount of time on quizzes is not even close to enough time to finish. Allows a 3x5 notecard on quizzes and half sheet of paper on final. Lectures are pretty clear though, just a lot on info. Very strict on grading pre and post lab reports so just hope your TA is nice.
118C was one of the most difficult courses I have taken, but Dr. Lievens did an adequate job of teaching the large amount of content. The 6 lecture quizzes are 20 mins each and are difficult, but you can get an A if you prepare properly with the practice worksheets she provides on canvas. She curved 4% on our quizzes and 9% on the final.
Lecture quickly but have recordings. Lots of practice questions so it is possible for everyone to pass if you study hard. I think labs are longer than 118B since there are a bunch of refluxing, but in general I think this class is pretty fun.
Nothing against her she is a very nice person, I just had a hard time with the teaching style and had a hard time following along in lecture. So much vocab to know and asking students to read a manual for ochem can be incredibly confusing to first time learners. The curve doesnt help you out much at all.
Lievens a great ochem professor considering the choices we have got. She is concise with what she assesses on exams in that you could really just stick to lectures and get an A in the class. Although there is no curve overall, she curved +12% on the final and some other curves including discussion assignments and quizzes (5). Pretty great tbh.
Unorganized lecture notes (just writes straight on notability) but lots of good practice worksheets with useful keys imo. There's a lot of quizzes though and sometimes not enough time to finish, tests a lot on vocab along with reactions, synthesis, etc. There were a lot of problem sets too but it somehow helped me for the final, along with a curve
Hard prof but good lecturer. Provides lots of practice. Lots of effort but worth it
good teacher, explains stuff well. ochem is hard in general though
Definitely the best OChem professor at UC Davis. Dr. Lievens is passionate about teaching. Her lectures are amazingly clear and logical. I cannot find someone else better than her, especially since I've taken CHE 118C with another professor. Though the tests are hard, she curves a lot. She is worth more than 5!! Don't hesitate to take her class!
Really good professor. Does give a curve at the end
One of the better chem profs I've had at Davis but there are still some things about the course that could be changed. I loved Lieven's style of testing (bi-weekly 20 min quizzes) but the material still stacks up as she moves very quickly. EXTREMELY DENSE LECTURES! Class isn't too bad if you stay on top of the material.
Lievens is an amazing lecturer who makes complicated ideas more digestible. Your grade is based off 6 quizzes, online lecture questions, and a final. It's a difficult class, but absolutely take it with Lievens if you have the chance. And actually study.
HW in this class is really bad. Set of problems for every couple chapters on canvas with really difficult questions. You get 1 attempt then you pray you dont get screwed by the very specific answer that the computer needs. Harder than the exams. I had an 83 quiz average and a 70 HW avg. Load up your notecard and you will survive the quizzes maybe.
Great professor, covered OChem well. Finished the 118 series and I must say I learned the most from her class but the amount of content she teaches is quite a lot compared to other profs. Lots of random reactions and synthesis problems that required 4-6 steps. Overall, study everything and you should be set.
Great professor. Gives numerous quizzes instead of 2 exams which helps water down grades. Allows notecards for quizzes and half-sheet for final. Drops lowest quiz score. Uses MasteringChem, records lectures, and is very organized during class. Tests are related to lecture. Highly recommend - definitely not a super challenging professor.
Her lectures are very fast and packed with information, and when asked to slow down during lectures or post lecture material before class, she said no. For a class with 700 people there needs to be accommodation for different learning styles and that does not exist in this class.
Needs to put herself in her students' shoes more. Quizzes 8-8:20 at the furthest hall on campus (sometimes in pouring rain & high winds) WITH lect after is ridiculous. A student was having trouble keeping up with lecture & she responds "This is why the recording is offered in the first place." Hard to keep up with her lecture pace as a nonchemist.
Lievens did everything she could to make a challenging class seem doable. Can't recommend her enough
Your grade is mostly made up of weekly/biweekly quizzes (40%), but you are allowed a note card. Prof. Lievens doesn't curve but she provides enough resources/practice that you dont necessarily need one. Some students say she lectures too fast but she pauses often to see if anyone has questions. 13/10 professor. VERY knowlegable!
Lievens is pretty good for ochem. It's a difficult subject, but they do a good job with how much material needs to be covered in the course. Bi-weekly(ish) quizzes. Final is pretty difficult but typically curved generously. Homework for each section and participation questions each lecture (very helpful for vocab) help bump grades up a few points.
Uses biweekly quizzes instead of midterms, which I found nice. Quizzes were not horrible but more than 20 mins to complete them would have been nice. Final was difficult but she curves generously. Good lecturer, but goes too fast so recordings come in handy. Probably one of the better ochem professors.
Lievens was a fine professor! The class goes super fast so make sure to pay attention and take notes. Quizzes were intense with only 20 minutes to complete but as long as you know the material, you should be fine. Final was also difficult but she ended up generously curving.
Quizzes around once a week. The class is hard but it's ochem.
90.0 is an A-, nothing lower, no class curve. However, curves the final exam, discussion quizzes, and lecture quizzes. Due to this, at the end of the quarter, the grade you receive is boosted by around 5% from your raw grade in canvas. If you fall below 85 raw, you won't be able to get an A-. Treat every assignment/quiz with importance.
Dr. Lievens is a good lecturer. She goes fast as there is lots of material to cover. Homework is helpful, quizzes almost every other week (5 total, lowest score dropped), no midterms. She allows a notecard for every quiz and a half-sheet front and back for the final. It's a hard class but she explains things well.
I love her; amazing lectures, notecard on tests, study the practice exams and u should be good. Make sure to pay attention to vocab. Amazing curve on the final. Would take her for entire series if I could.
Not sure why she has a 5/5 rating, bc I hated her teaching style. Her notes are super messy and disorganized and hard to follow along. Her quizzes are very difficult, and the final was a joke. Take another prof if you can
I was frightened to start organic chemistry based on what I've heard since I first came to UC Davis. Thankfully, Professor Lieven's is a FANTASTIC lecturer (though sometimes they are a quick talker). The lectures were ORGANIZED, Proff uses IPad to write notes, funny, clear, 6 quizzes+hmwk+post lecture canvas quizzes+final. if you study=easy class
Challenging homework and exams, but they never felt unfair. Always open for questions during lecture and office hours. Very fun and easy to talk to. The lectures can get confusing when they go on extended metaphors for chemistry concepts, so you need to spend some time piecing together all the concepts to get the big picture. Excellent professor!
Although her teaching style is make or break for some, I think that writing down notes instead of slides were very helpful for Ochem. She made it very simple and concise and gives practice quizzes that are similar to real ones. She does go fast but still explains concepts well so don't worry. Final exam is long but it's basically 6 quizzes.
Great professor. Only two complaints from the class: 1) she lectures quickly which is hard to follow at times and 2) she will throw all of her pneumonics at you and they all kind of suck. Other than that, an awesome person who will make you at least somewhat enjoy organic chemistry. Homework can be long, and 2-3 participation assignments per day.
Her lecture is great and clear but her exam is really hard and too long to finish. I got all of my grade much higher than the average but I still got B in this class cause I cannot think during the exam which is too long and time really short. Choose another professor!
Her lectures are very organized and worth taking; lecture participation questions and additional study materials are helpful but heavy. Online homework is definitely a waste of time and extremely useless. Overall, the professor is cool. However, the course designer of Chem 8A absolutely makes this 2-unit course difficult like a 5-unit course.
She draws a lot of molecules really fast, I would recommend not trying to write everything down because you may miss information trying to draw everything. Sit through the lecture and try to understand it and then re-watch videos. It gets progressively harder, building on material from the start so do not get left behind. Unfair time for quizzes.
Her exams are way too long for the amount given to complete them. We had 20 minute quizzes during class and she still wanted us to do lecture after. She didn't even give us like a minute to transition. She teaches okay but goes too fast.
Lieven's is a good professor in comparison to the other options at UCD for organic but her lectures are really fast. She doesn't really give any breaks in between to absorb things, if you're not all eyes and ears you will definitely miss a few concepts. Her exams are also super long for the 50 minute period given its almost impossible to complete
Having her was a blessing for my retake. She provided many tailored exercises that built up concepts step by step and taught me how to properly study for ochem. Her lectures were organized and she seems to care about our learning, it was a breath of fresh air compared to my last two professors. SS2 was hectic but I understand it had to be.
Personally, I did not think that I deserved a C minus in this class. I worked very hard for studying for the tests and the labs that were 3 hours long and made zero sense were very draining. I don't understand why taking Chem 8B is a requirement for GDB majors. not like we are gonna have to explain the chemical structure of glucose in public health
Ochem is hard no matter who teaches it. Prof Lievens has good lectures and fair tests, but you will need to study a looooot. Its not enough to just go to class. Info from discussion is ESSENTIAL to performing well on the tests, and is the most difficult material in the class. Very reachable online and lectures are recorded.
No midterms, lots of quizzes in lecture & disc. Straightforward lectures, not excellent just simple and easy to follow. Allows cheat sheet on all exams and practice resources match what you'd see on exams so fairly easy to pass with a B. She Curves disc quizzes and the final, but don't rely on that for an A (anything from none to even a 13% curve?)
118A is a hard class. You NEED to spend extra time reviewing the material & making sure you understand the concepts. There are 6 discussion quizzes every ~1.5 weeks instead of midterms along with weekly discussion quizzes so it feels like you never catch a break. You do get a notecard for all exams which is VERY helpful. Otherwise, great professor.
Loved their teaching, and they gave an ample amount of resources to succeed. DO WELL ON THE LECTURE QUIZZES!!! It may seem like you have time to get your grade up at the end, but most of the percentage goes to the lecture quizzes and obviously the final.
I was so scared of taking ochem because of the horror stories but Lievens COMPLETELY changed my mind. Although I didn't get an A, I learned so much more than I could've expected. If you do all her problem sets, practice problems, practice exams, participation questions, etc. you WILL get an A in this class. Go to office hours! 10/10 professor!!!
Lievens is great, if you can take her. Her practice quizzes are exactly like the actual ones, she does throw some curveballs but nothing too bad. As long as you study you'll be fine. However, the curve is basically nonexistent.
Enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and kind. The class was nowhere near as difficult as people say (thanks to Professor Lievens). I left inspired and genuinely interested in ochem. Study consistently, do NOT cram! The 6 lecture quizzes make for a very fast pace and (from experience) you will not be able to score well if you don't prepare far in advance.
The course content is very challenging. The pro is fair, even though could be better is she can use slides instead of mere handwriting. Recordings provided.
The best professor for ochem in my opinion. Lectures were amazing, quizzes and homework for 118A were fair and helpful, while in 118B there wasn't discussion, but homework helpful regardless. As long as you put in the work and use AATC, OH, etc... it will be okay. (avoid nasiri for 118c if possible :)
By far the best chemistry professor I've had at Davis. Her lectures were long but she made them enjoyable, she is truly passionate about what she teaches and she provides many resources to ensure you can do well on the exams. Utilize AATC resources! Ochem is hard but Prof. Lievens made me enjoy chemistry.
Lievens is a super reasonable professor, despite the pacing of the course being pretty intense. A lot of quizzes, but it lightens the weight of each. She lectures clearly and is great at explaining the reasons behind what's happening, which is really helpful for understanding mechanisms. Quizzes go fast (20 min), so practice the timing for tests.
She's an amazing professor, don't get me wrong. Ochem is definitely a difficult class, but I really hated the way she structured her class. There were quizzes instead of midterms, and there were discussion assignments/quizzes every week you had discussion. Barely had a curve, and expected too much when it came to quizzes and even the final.
As someone who hates going to class- Prof Lievens made me want to show up! She is SO FUNNY and gives quick tricks to remember concepts- literal queen! Exams are lightwork compared to gen chem but problem sets can drag your grade down bc there are SO MANY- aatc will be your bestie. You get so much exam practice that is similar to actual tests
Sarah is an objectively great instructor. You can tell that she is passionate about chemistry and that she enjoys teaching. A lot of her quiz questions/lecture material do come from the textbook.
Dr. Lievens is one of, if not the best chem professors at UCD. Her lectures are very clear and explanatory. They write their notes out in the clearest way possible in order to ensure that the topics are made simple enough to understand. Dr. Lievens is also so helpful during OH. Quizzes can feel like a lot but just review lectures and practice.
Sarah is the best chemistry instructor at Davis. I've had Helix, but I didn't enjoy his teaching style. Sarah makes things clear and she is very willing to go over material numerous times to make sure it's understood. The class is hard, but studying the textbook does help, since her vocab does tend to come from the text.
I took 3 OCHEM courses and she is the best professor I had. The content itself is quite challenging, but this is 128 series so I will say it's a fair game. Especially she makes lots of effort to make you understand the mechanism instead of just memorizing them. Recommended for pre-med students will take the MCAT or DAT, quite helpful.
AMAZING!!!! This class is tough but she is an amazing teacher. She explains well, has multiple virtual office hours a week, and the exams are very straight forward. Know your notes, do all of the practice, do the homework and you will be fine!
Class is split up into 5 midterm "quizzes" that students take throughout the quarter that each cover 2 weeks of material. It's a lot more manageable to study for since its normally only 1.5 chapters from the textbook. But the class is not really curved and she lectures REALLY fast so its really hard to keep up / grasp anything in the lecture.
Lievens is an excellent lecturer and compassionate professor. I personally disliked her class structure, but my understanding is that the majority of people largely prefer it to the rest of the chem department. Ochem will always be hard, good luck!
She is great at teaching and is clear with what she expects from you on the quizzes. That being said, ochem is hard and she moves SUPER fast. The worst part is that quizzes are only 20 minutes so you are VERY rushed. I found it helpful when you watch lectures at home to slow it down. Average in the class is about 75% so do not expect an easy A.
This was one of the most awful classes I've ever taken. Grades are based on 5 quizzes, but only 20 minutes are given to complete them which is absolutely not enough time. The class average has not been above a D on any quiz. The class is also uncurved. We did get a flash card for the quizzes, but there is so much content that it wasn't helpful.
Quizzes were way too long to finish in 20 min and schedule was just evil with lab and a quiz on week 10, giving us two days to prepare for the final. Lectures way too quickly, so many examples that it's hard to know what to even study, Helix was better for ochem. This class fills me with dread, only take if ur a chem genius.
Lieven's seems like a lovely person, and you can tell she enjoys what she does and knows her stuff. Their lectures are well explained they are just very FAST, but that may just be the pacing of the course. I will say, the class demands a lot from you. You are going to have to put in a lot of time to do well, or to just pass.
The WORST lecture notes; the WORST homework; the WORST quizzes; the WORST instructor.
Lievens is the best o-chem professor I've ever had. Her lectures are clear and she gives you everything you need to do well. Her quizzes are fast paced but you get a flash card on them. Curved both our final exam and quiz average + adjusted labs for TA differences. She is a great teacher but it's up to you to do so the work to succeed.
Very good lecturer. Content is difficult and her lectures are very fast paced. 5 quizzes instead of midterms is rough due to pacing but manageable.
She is an awesome professor. She clearly loves teaching this subject. She tries to help her students succeed. To do good in her class, I recommend go to lecture and rewatch lectures for the parts you are confused about. Her practice quizzes were similar to the actual quizzes so studying these is helpful. Also the notecard saved me a couple times
“There is no curve” Everyday I heard this woman saying there will be no curve, I lived in fear that I would fail this class, I even had this course saved for the summer, until she finally came out with the grade 3 days later. She is the devil incarnate tho, but she clutched with the curve.
"How we doing?" She gives the fastest lectures I have had the displeasure of listening to at 8AM at the most isolated hall on canvas, gives us a midterm on the last friday of school, and then the final on the following monday, BOTH at 8AM. “How we doing?” Bad, we are doing BAD!
Honestly, was personally not a huge fan of the 5 quiz style. Every single one felt like studying for a full midterm. Her lectures were DENSE and had a lot of content, but I think that is just 8B as a class. But in the end she gives a VERY nice curve, so she is definitely fair w her grading. Loves to teach the class, not a bad choice for 8B imo.
Ochem is hard but this lady knows how to teach you. if you take detailed notes and actually put in the work IT WILL PAY OFF. do her practice quizzes but BUTTTTTTT, you have to go over all your notes for that quiz if you wanna get an A/A-. The curve for the final was 8% and her quizzes ended up being curved 6%. Her lectures are very heacy but STUDY!
It's a hard subject! Don't blame the professor—it's just the nature of the course! Don't let the "bad reviews" scare you. I think Lievens was an outstanding professor who can teach really well. Her practice quizzes are super helpful and she gives good examples in class. Her lectures are very dense, but what do you expect... its ochem....
There are 5 quizzes instead of midterms. There was so much material to study for just one quiz, and you only had 20 minutes to complete them. I think if we had more time the quiz averages would be higher (they were around 60%). I thought I wasn't gonna pass, but the curve saved me. Definitely a harder workload than 8a, even if you did good in 8a.
alrightttyy folks. general anouncements pronouncements: her lectures are fast but thats the nature of ochem. shes great at lecturing and is clear with what she teaches. 20 min quizzes are not bad as long as you practice a lot beforehand (key to success). she curved our final and quizzes this quarter. shes very nice, dont be afraid to ask questions!
She is an excellent lecturer and explains concepts pretty well. There are 5 quizes in the quarter, roughly one every two weeks. Each of them is 3-pages long but you only got 20 minutes to finish them up and defnitely not easy. In othe weeks you got a load of homework. Final exam is long af and stunningly difficult. A generous curve at end though
Quizzes were hard, gave us one 2 days before the finals, total of 5. Genuinely didn't learn anything in this class other than nomenclature and sugars. 104 point homework due last day of lecture (longest hw). Honestly suffered in this class but she curved and I got a C+ (6% quiz curve, 8% final curve). Don't think I could take Lievens again…
Obviously a hard class so you have to put in the effort, make sure to review OFTEN. Lievens wants you to succeed, ask questions after class, go to office hours and do your part. You have to stay on top of it, but she explains things clearly and is SO nice when you ask for help. Generous curve! Really enjoyed the course, 10/10 would take again.
She is OK. If you have to choose between her and a 1 star professor, take her, but otherwise pick a different class. Her class is extremely difficult and she her pacing is incredibly fast. She teaches on very small details so its really hard to get full points. My biggest piece of advice is to stay on top of her bi-weekly quizzes.
Nice Person. SUPER BAD grader.
Great curve! Test heavy, study for those quizzes!!! Def a tough class, but it is organic chem, so its gotta be hard.
excellent prof, amazing lectures that explain everything you need to know well. quizzes are tough due to 20 min time limit, but there was a generous curve at the end.
She's okay, most people like the generous curve she gives at the end of the quarter, but she's not a great lecturer. She speaks and writes too fast in lectures and barely answers questions. Quizzes are also too long and difficult to finish in 20 minutes. She gave us a quiz on Friday week 10 with hw due that day knowing our final was Monday at 8am
If Sarah Lievens has a million fans i am one of them. If Sarah Lievens has ten fans i am one of them. If Sarah Lievens has one fan then that is me. If Sarah Lievens has no fans that is because i am no more on the Earth. If the world is against Sarah Lievens I am against the world.
QUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 !!! Lievens was born fo make chemistry better understood and the 5 quizzes, 1 dropped is such a good system cause youre so on top of things and by the final reviewing isn't as hard as everything kind of builds on each other and things begin to connect.
I heard she was good for 118 but not as much for the 8 series. Her practice problems felt disorganized and didn't match quiz questions. That said, the class isn't too hard. I skipped lectures, crammed overnight, and scored 75-85 on quizzes. Got an 85 on the final with 2 days of study (no sleep). If you put in more effort than me, you'll do well!
Professor Lievens is a great professor and lecturer. Organic Chemistry is hard and she makes it digestible and as easy as possible. She doesn't curve the class overall just the final exam, our average for the class was 75.7% using standard grading, i.e. 90% is an A-. Extremely disappointing to anyone who did above average consistently.
used her lectures to survive 118B. Who is Lievens? For the blind, she is the vision. For the hungry, she is the chef. For the thirsty, she is the water. If lievens thinks, I agree. If lievens speaks, I'm listening. If Dr. Lievens has one million fans, I'm one of them. If Dr. Lievens has one fan, it is me. If Dr. Lievens has no fans, I don't exist.
The quizzes were hard, BUT she did curve at the end! She is a good lecturer, its just a lot of material. Prepare to know EVERYTHING that she covers in lectures for the quizzes. She did not curve until after the final, so we had no way of knowing, but it worked in everyones favor!!
Her lectures are great, no slides and just writes on her ipad so they're super easy to follow. She doesn't curve except for the final so even if you beat the average by a lot consistently it doesn't matter until the final. She had 5 quizzes instead of midterms and I thought it made the quarter fly by. Practice quizzes are similar to actual quizzes!
def one of the better chem professors. i actually learned in this class. the discussion quizzes lowkey tanked my grade more than the lecture quizzes because of my ta. the final was difficult but thankfully she curved it at the end of the quarter. she gives good study materials but the no overall curve aspect is pretty scary
I failed 118A with Farahat, but after retaking it with Lievens, I passed with a satisfactory grade. The discussion section tanked my grade, but I had a B average on lecture quizzes because of her extremely helpful practice exams. The homework is hard, but it's relevant for studying. Her lectures are amazing, and she provides plenty of examples!
Clear lectures. Quizzes were tough but doable. Final was not too bad. A notecard was allowed for quizzes and a half-sheet cheatsheet was allowed for the final.
She is very nice. You may feel confused and cannot follow at first, but it's ochem. Her lectures are very clear, and all her exams just base on her lectures. Do her lectures quiz and additional practices reactions she provides. Do enough practice and go back to her lecture notes, you'll get this. She is the best. AACT also helpful. Large curve.
If Lievens has a million fans i am one of them. If Sarah Lievens has ten fans i am one of them. If Sarah Lievens has one fan then that is me. If Sarah Lievens has no fans that is because i am no more on the Earth. If the world is against Sarah Lievens I am against the world.
There was barely any curve. She does give easy points on tests, but she really is not good at explaining mechanisms and reactions.
No midterms, but quizzes every other week, long homework assignments almost as often. No time for breaks or burnouts. The prof herself is caring and tries to keep lecture engaging with jokes and analogies. Course load was super heavy, my labs were graded harshly but it varies by TA. She gave a huge curve at the end that let a lot of people pass.
Lecture was a bit unclear used a lot of analogies. LONG homework sets. Quiz every other week including week 10, lowest one dropped. Curved the final 4% which is crazy for ochem.
Dr. Lievens provides all the necessary resources to guide students to success in organic chemistry. I ended up performing very well in CHE118B due to the foundation that lievens provided me. Utilize every resource and really try to understand her lectures (go to office hours!!!). she really is one of the best chem lecturers in our department!!!
Course consists of quizzes every other week and one final, and one quiz drop. Overall really great lecturer, provides tons of practice for each concept which are super helpful. Practice quizzes and final are extremely similar to actual quizzes, and you get a cheat sheet for every assessment, which reduces memorization needed. Highly recommended!
the class content is hard and she goes a bit fast during lectures, her quizzes are hard and it is about 2 pages which you get 20 minutes for so it is challenging to finish on time, you need to lock in and make sure you understand the material VERY well from day 1.. it is a very doable class just don't slack off
Super awesome professor, loved their lecture style, and loved how attendance was optional. Also loved how there were quizzes instead of midterms, made the class feel much less overwhelming. Homework was annoying and difficult sometimes but there were plenty of resources to help. Overall loved this professor and would take again.
Shes a really good professor and teaches super well. very minimal curve. exam questions are similar to practice ones. clear on the content she tests on. she does ask dificult questions.
5 lecture quizzes, 1 dropped-- she provides practice quizzes that are very similar to the actual quiz & you get an index card. none of the questions are surprises and sometimes were very similar to ones proposed in lecture (write down examples on your index card!). she is pretty heavy on vocab so just make sure you understand the concepts! love her
Dr Lievens is a great lecturer and professor. There are lots of resources that are very helpful in studying for the quizzes, which are every other week and really helped me stay on top of the content. It can move fast and it's a good amount of work for only two units, but it's an interesting class and Dr Lievens does a great job teaching it.
Lievens is overrated, but 8A is an easy class. I am not a fan of her lecture style. Exams very similar to practice and doable in the 20 min if you know your stuff.
Her recorded 118B lectures are one of the only reasons of me getting an A in 118B. The goat.
summer session: loved her for winter 118a, but lectures have become very unorganized. exams have sub 40 averages, but there was a decent sized curve. (she only curves if the averages are low). very tough professor both 118a, and 118c but she definitely knows her stuff and if you can grasp the conceptual (vocab) parts of ochem, you're good!
most of the class is comprised of quizzes (which aren't rounded) and the final is pretty long. she's a a great lecturer and everything she teaches is on the test, but helix's tests are a lot easier and are curved, not to mention way shorter. would recommend watching her lectures if you can, but wouldn't take the class again
She is by far one of the most inconsiderate professors at UC Davis. Taking her during summer session has been hell. She gives 50 mins to take a 7 page test, then uses the rest of the class period to give a lecture right after. She writes very fast and rushes her handwriting that it is often hard to understand what she is even writing.
One of the better ochem profs, but I think the course structure wasn't great. 20 minutes for a quiz that most people can't easily finish in time/check work for. She allows a notecard, which is nice. I like her personality! But her lecture style wasn't for me. It's very fast, which sucks for an already hard subject. Those problem sets...
For the blind, She is the vision. For the hungry, She is the chef. For the thirsty, She is the water. If Lievens thinks, I agree. If Lievens speaks, I'm listening. If Lievens has one fan, it is me. If Lievens has no fans, I don't exist.
Great professor! She really loves chemistry and you can tell through her passionate lectures. She teaches you the core of chemistry and this foundation is so valuable for truly understanding ochem. Her exams are very fair, she tests only on content she taught and is clear about her expectations. A lot of things in the gradebook to help boost grades
Avoid taking her for summer, has a heavy curve due to very low averages, lecturing style is a mess, and has terrible handwriting. However, if you're taking her on regular quarter, make use of the practice she gives (there's a lot). Be ready to spend a lot of time or working together with the homework as well, as they are all single attempts
She's incredibly passionate about chemistry and genuinely cares about her students, especially those who ask questions regularly. Lectures are a bit disorganized, and she will talk for the full lecture time without pause, often to the confusion of the class. But I have enjoyed her class despite the difficulty of the material.
The material is very dense, so there's only so much she can cover during class. Prepare to read the textbook and consult outside sources for studying. AATC helped me a ton as well. Her handwriting can be messy sometimes, but she'll happily clarify if you ask. She also allows a note card on each quiz and a half sheet of notes on the final.
This class was one of the hardest courses I have taken. The material is very dense; I had over 110 pages of notes for the entire course, and the depth she goes into most topics makes her exams really difficult. Additionally, her lectures are incredibly disorganized, and in my opinion, it felt like she would keep cramming materials down our throats.
Great professor! Truly enjoyed my time in her class and her passion for chemistry is inspiring. Her lectures move quickly and her handwriting isn't the neatest but she explains things in a way that is very easy to understand and answers questions thoroughly. Tests are very fair and reflective of the content taught in class. Would recommend!
Dr. Lievens is always willing to answer questions and help her students. Her office hours are incredibly useful and problem sets help prepare for the exams. I will say the quizzes are fast paced, but as long as you prepare for that, the class is very reasonable for the content it teaches
the literal goat of all time
All the topics were taught very well and she was very articulate in lecture. Lots of office hours and she allows a notecard on exams which is EXTREMELY helpful for memory. The class is indeed difficult; she goes into great depth, and seems to speed up at the end of the quarter. You will need to constantly study for weekly discussion quizzes.
I think she's a good professor overall but the class is difficult. There are a lot of components for grading so I'd suggest utilizing that to boost your grade. The lecture quiz can be sometimes be stressful because it's every other week. I think a discussion quiz should be drop. Overall, Dr. Lievens is a great option to get started with OChem.
She's a pretty good lecturer but her class pacing was horrible. She dumped alot of the more difficult material 4 days before the final. Barely curved and only gave 20 minutes for her lecture quizzes
Lievens was a great professor and always open to questions and was very helpful in office hours. My advice is to put as many of her lecture notes as you can into flash cards as these facts would often appear as vocab on quizzes, make sure you really understand how each mechanism works when that unit comes, and take discussion quizzes seriously
Lievens is the goat, even if ochem is difficult. She cares about the subject she's teaching and she taught in a way that made a lot of sense to me. Class gets harder as the quarter goes along so make sure you're prepared from the start.
Concept heavy: OK for 1st half of 118a, but reactions/synthesis/spec w/ no examples=agony. Endless selfstudy+AATC camping. Taught topics AFTER test, crams before final. LONG HW. 1-2 quiz/week 1 lec quiz drop but 2 had failing avg, uncurved. Easy discussions & 7% mercy final curve. No cutoff curve. median overall 77%. A is doable. It's ochem so 4/5
I had terrible experiences with chem profs, she was good but not perfect. If you can get past the fact that her exams are difficult and her problem sets, she's a very good prof. I hated how i practically took this class online because lectures were 7:30am and she never posted notes. She explains very well and makes you work for that A.
Dr Lievens has one of the worst-paced classes I've ever had in Davis: 1. administers 5 quizzes thruout qtr which are nearly impossible to complete in 20 min & make up 40% of grade 2. lectures SUPER QUICK + does not upload notes 3. material very dense towards end of quarter w/ little to no support 4. hw problems only 1 chance -- bad for learning :(
Lievens is a solid professor for 118A but this class is a LOT of work and there is always a quiz coming up. You HAVE to keep up on work & keep on studying for lecture & discussion quizzes if you want to do well- very very difficult to last minute study for anything. Do every and all practice provided and GO TO OFFICE HOURS!!!
Great prof but I mostly had to self-study towards the end because the difficult material wasn't explained as thoroughly like the mechanisms. Also very discussion heavy (disc. quiz every week) + lecture quiz every other wk so you will be constantly studying I barely had time for social life. no overall curve but amazing curve for the hard final
If you want to know what it's like to be taught by a dyslexic prison inmate this is the class for you. Lectures are so unorganized it felt like trying to navigate your girlfriend's anatomy. curve is great cause the average is about 45% on a good day
TAs make or break your grade in the class, sadly. Her lectures were good, I enjoyed her teaching and humor. Lectures not very in-depth like her exams (1 test every 2 weeks + final). Go to OH, do ALL the quizzes, ask qs, read the TB and exhaust online help and the AATC. Very tough subject. Great prof but hard class.
Lievens is a decent lecturer and is very helpful during office hours. Her exams are TOUGH, but if you do all her practice material, take thorough notes, attend office hours, and go to the AATC workshops, you will get a good grade! Practice, practice, practice! You're also allowed a notecard during exams (helpful for synthesis). Good luck!
