Sarah Martin has no clue what she is doing. She should not be teaching. The students in class have to correct her when she's giving a lecture because she is so clueless. Do Not take a class that she's teaching. She's horrible!
She's very patient and understanding. She wants you to understand the math, not just memorize ways to get an answer. She is funny and creative, very enthusiastic in class. If you come to class and do your homework, you will do fine.
She's a great teacher. I loved this class, learned a lot of interesting things about math.

Very patient and explains things extremely well. Do the homework and you'll be fine. Lets you use note cards for the tests. Best math teacher at western!
She's boring and stupid.. or at least the class is stupid, the material is pointless I'll never need to know anything about if cats love tuna or not...
Had her for precal. Very hard. Only skipped through material and didn't really explain how to do any of it. Wasn't very enthuastic teacher, a little monotone. My recommendation... take someone else.
best teacher I've ever had
easily distracted, so never mention a cat!!! will not control the class room. She dosent teach the material in a way that helps at all!!! Take Mr. Billips !!!
great teacher. very patient, good sense of humor
If you are good with Math she's great and goes over all homework problems. Have a sense of humor, she's hilarious! Maybe a little obcessive with cats and quirky at times, but she knows what she's doing. A question may not be answered clearly, but other than that she's good.
this teacher is horrible. she teaches the material in a way that just makes things more complicated than they should be. i spend the majority of my time in the math center learning the material because i get nothing out of her class. do NOT take her.
Easy Teacher. Explain things vaguely.
Awesome teacher! She is extremely caring and patient, explains math very clearly. Very organized. Expects you to do your best work. Good sense of humor. I really learned a lot in this class, would recommend her to students who really want to understand math, not just memorize stuff to get the right answers.

Horrible, absolutely horrible. She tells rather than explains, but when she tries to explain, she makes it much more complicated than it has to be. Thank heavens for the learning center...
Awesome teacher! The people who wrote negative things are just mad because they didn't or couldn't learn precalc. I came to class, took notes, did my homework, and did great! Dr. Martin is very enthusiastic and helpful, explains things very carefully. However, immature kids just out of high school whined a lot. Enough already! Grow up!
Loved this class
She is one of the nicest and most caring professors I have had at Virginia Western and really knows what she teaches. She really cares about her students. Take you for making a difference in my life!!!
Pretty good teacher, very old fashioned and teaches straight out of the book. Class is pretty boring but she helps a lot and gives some easy assignments to help for her hard tests. Math for the Liberal arts is an easy A or B.
Awesome prof! Patient, funny, good at explaining things. Tests very fair.
She Isn't a very good teacher at all... basically after attending her class in my opinion I "Un-learned," what I already understood... She also turns on the projector's light and writes on the chalkboard with white chalk so you cannot see what she wrote. I wasted money and I will have to take the class again but with a different teacher...
Excellent teacher. She expects you to take responsibility for your own learning --come to class, do the homework, etc. She requires us to know the concepts, not just plug stuff in a calculator to get the answer. She's also very cheerful and has a good sense of humor. Loves cats.
Great teacher! I loved this class!
Took this class in the summer, so it was a condensed version of calc. But still very hard! She built points into our quizzes which helped everyones grades a lot, but I still had to go to the math center everyday before class. Better at calc then precalc, but only take her if you HAVE to.
Do not take her class she will bore you out of your minds and she does not explain a thing and also does not work with you well she is point less. Do not weast you time in taking this class take Billips insted
shes not a very good teacher...her lectures are boring and never clear...
She blamed us for failing the test because she said we didn't attend class and didn't do the work...I have been there everyday and have done all the work and I still failed the test. Plus our class went from like 30 students down to about 7 by the middle of the semester. Does that tell you anything?
She is an awful teacher.. She doesnt have a clue at what she is teaching. On top of all that she has an attitude and just makes the subject mroe confusing. It is already a hard class but she just makes everything worse. Do not get this teacher what ever you do you will regret it. Her class is boring and she doesnt have a clue about calculus.
There is not enough space for me to say just how bad this lady is. Unless you already know calc. do not take her. She doesn't even seem like she knows what she is talking about. If you do take her class be prepared to go to the learning center so that someone can actual teach you the stuff. Horrible teacher!!!
worst math teacher i've ever had. i'm an A math student, and always have been. I studied countless hours and still got a 65 on a test. she is not clear when teaching, and spends more time explaining "why it works" rather than what we actually have to know for the test. don't take this with her, it's a waste of time and money
Teaches bad and do not understand what she is teaching while in class and must do all homework and ask lots of questions when going over homework or else you will fail. She will always meet with you during office hours and is very helpful then and gets you to understand it pretty good. Must meet with her in office privately or you will fail.
Fantastic teacher! I've read others' comments, and they are so totally unfair. She does explain WHY things work. Many students don't care and just want to memorize stuff for the test. She is very clear about what we need to know for tests and gives us lots of practice/review problems. She cares about her students and is very enthusiastic. A+++
Awesome teacher! Very thorough explanations, fair in grading, really cares about students. Very enthusiastic, loves math and makes it fun.
Superior knowledge of calculus, knows how to relate problems to real life situations. Very clear explanations. Terrific office hours, willing to go the extra mile to help you understand. Tells you exactly what you need to know for tests. If you go to class and do the homework, you'll be fine!
Obviously loves math and makes it easy to understand. Creates a fun class atmosphere, always cheerful and enthusiastic. Very caring and willing to help you.
She made calculus exciting and easy to understand. If you come to class and do the homework, you'll do fine. She also gives awesome on-line reviews for each test. Very fair; you know exactly what you need to learn for each test. We even learned funny "calculus carols." Because of this class, I'm looking forward to taking more math next year.
HORRIBLE TEACHER!!! She doesn't explain the material in ways we can understand, and "there are many ways to do math" well in her class there's just 1! and it doesn't make any sense. I'm still in her class and have done all the homework (which she doesn't check) and every test review, and still do poorly. Every person I've spoken with has disliked h
Awesome professor! Enthusiasic and creative, loves math, great sense of humor, thorough explanations, very fair tests, treats you like an adult and expects you to be responsible for doing homework, reading textbook, etc.
She does not count homework, only test grades. She takes attendance, but it does not go toward your grade. She grades schizophrenically, and takes points off of correct answers. She does not offer to help students fully understand. She expects you to know what she wants-w/o explaining class/homework efficiently, or fail.
I sat in the second row back and could barely hear a word she said. VERY soft spoken, and VERY monotone. Tests are ridiculous. Nothing good I can say about this course, so I'm just going to leave it at that.
This teacher is horrible. She takes problems out of the book and puts them on the board without explaining them. She's monotone and unexciting, making it very difficult to stay awake. Only grades test and quizzes, will not help you if you ask before/after class, will not help DURING class, very tough teacher. Does not do her job well.
Fast paced, skips things she thinks we should have learned already(no matter the multiple questions on it), grades ridiculously (took 4 points off a question only worth 3 points on a test). Impatient and dismissive, enough so my classmates noticed. I am polite, do all my homework, study hard and have only missed one class(car trouble not laziness)
She is all over the place. Defiantly knows her stuff but has a hard time teaching it. If you are a hard worker and good at figuring things out than take her. If you do decide to take her than i highly recommend getting the solutions manual which explains all the homework problems.
Unless you plan to teach yourself do not take her. She doesn't explain anything and will just start doing problems on board and expect you to catch on. Just because she knows how to do precalc doesn't mean she knows how to teach it.
Dr. Martin is really a sweet lady, fairly quirky, definitely loves math. I knew most of the material in this course already, but needed it as part of a sequence, though had I not, it would have been terribly difficult. I got a glimpse of her grade chart in office hours once, half the class was failing. Do all HW, reviews, and ask questions in class
best math teacher i've ever had. enthusiastic, clear explanations, helpful outside of class, great review sheets, very fair tests. anyone who comes to class and does the homework should do fine. also great sense of humor, makes class fun. i didn't like math in high school, but this class has changed my attitude. She expects you to work, though!
Posts extensive lecture notes on Blackboard & detailed review sheets for each test. You know exactly what to expect. Plus, she'll replace your lowest test grade with your exam grade, so if you fail a test, it won't ruin your grade.
Good teacher and a very kind, caring person. Always willing to help. She gave me an algebra book to review the basics I'd forgotten. You have to know your algebra and do the homework to pass this course. I read what some other people wrote. She doesn't deserve the anonymous garbage that they posted.
Math is not my best subject, but she makes it easier. Explains it clearly and will help you outside of class. Great teacher!
She doesn't help you with anything, she expects you to already know the material when it's new to us also. she never actually show you how to do the work she just stand up in tell you.
100% recommend! Enthusiastic, makes class fun. Very thorough explanations. Cares about students and wants to help. Lecture notes and reviews are on-line, so you know exactly what to study. Very fair in grading.
Loved this class, learned a lot, very different from other math classes. Awesome professor. Enthusiastic, great sense of humor. Study guides and video lectures for every chapter are on Blackboard, plus reviews for every test.
excellent prof. really cares about students. highly recommend.
I did not like this class. The teacher was not interesting and she didn't explain things very well. Thankfully, I found this class easy because I knew most of the information and I can self-study well. She does give test reviews and allows note cards on tests. She always kept class overtime though. Be aware of this when making your schedule.
I loved this class! I never cared for math before, but this class was really fascinating. It changed my mind. She's a terrific prof., has videos on Blackboard for all lectures, has detailed study guides for each chapter, and review sheets for each test. If you do the work, you should get an A.
Took this class online - GREAT video lectures that matched the information on the tests. Allowed note cards in tests. I learned more in this class than any other math class. Ever. Granted, this isn't very complicated math - but it was FUN. Easy to get an "A" if you watch the videos, take good notes, and do the practice problems. Very, helpful.
I DON'T suggest taking her class and especially not online unless you're really good at math or really good at teaching yourself. She is not at all helpful. In the video lectures she does not fully explain the material, just does the problem and expects you to know what she is doing.
Awful. She does not explain things clearly and she is not an east grader! I'm getting C's on everything but everyone around me in failing.
She is a very capable teacher. She lets you have a have a note card for tests with what ever you want on it, she gives take home quizzes that you can get help on and provides a review & it's answers prior to the test. She sets you up to pass. If you do the work you will get A's in her class. If you don't do the work you will not pass.
Do not take this class by her. She is an awful instructor. You have to teach yourself that you need to learn. I have had to spend time in the math lab and get a tutor just in order to try and pass this class. I would not recommend this class to anyone.
I have math anxiety, so I was nervous taking this class to begin with. However, Professor Martin is a very good math teacher. She goes over everything that's on the test, and is always willing to work out homework questions if you ask. She also has study guides, and online lectures. The biggest plus is that you can use a note card on the test.
If you really study then class isn't that difficult. If you're taking this class online, the video lectures are helpful. She gives study guides which are very similar to the tests, allows a note card for the test and also replaces your lowest grade with your exam grade if its higher and she is always willing to help. Great teacher!
I think all the negative reviews of her are by people who are lazy and expect a grade to just be given to them without trying. I failed the first test but put in effort and passed the class with an A(no curve)! She is very helpful, provides excellent material that will help you pass this class and if you try hard enough you can easily get an A!
Dr. Martin was an good professor. As long as you do the homework and do the practice tests, you should be fine. Her tests are usually easier than the practice tests she gives out, so as long as you know how to do the practice tests, you should be fine. And, she even lets you use a notecard for the tests!
She's a really great professor. Sad she's not teaching math 152. She lets you use notecards on tests. Do all the homework and you'll do great! Make sure you do the hw.
Ms. Martin is a very nice lady but not a very good professor. You basically have to teach your self how to do anything. Yes you get a notecard on your tests but they don't help. I would NOT even recommend this class to my worst enemy.
Terrific instructor! Cares about students and willing to help. Provides study guides and videos on Blackboard, plus practice tests and review sheets. Anyone who does the homework should do great in this class. She does a great job of explaining things in class, but you have to do it yourself to really learn it.
If you didn't pass this class, you obviously didn't try at all. First of all, you're allowed a note card for EVERY test which you can write whatever you want on it. Second, her test reviews are the same questions as the test, with just a few numbers changed. NOT a hard course at all, and I've struggled with math since the 3rd grade. C'mon people.
She's a good women, and means well, but is literally the worst professor I've ever had. Taught my self everything. Doesn't show you how to graph well.. And for the people that said she was easy, you're probably a math wiz.. Don't listen to the good comments especially if math is your downfall because you'll regret it. I PROMISE.
I wasn't looking forward to taking calculus, but I love this class. It's opened up a whole new way of thinking about math. Dr. Martin is great! She's also very fair, gives you thorough review sheets that let you know what to study for each test. She wants you to learn to appreciate math and to be successful in the course.
I basically had to teach myself everything. Her lectures made no sense and she wasn't very helpful. On top of everything, this class has no application in real life.
Martin means well and she is very sweet but her teaching techniques didn't work well with me or my classmates if math is your worst subject I would not recommend her. but she will help you as long as you need if you need help. I pretty much lived at the math lab to pass this class. her reviews are mirrors of you test definitely do the review sheet
Best math teacher I've ever had!! Very thorough explanations, tells you why things work. She cares - iswilling to go the extra mile to help.
explanations very clear, grades fairly, cares about students, loved the class and learned a lot.
Very knowledgeable about the subject was very cut and dry about how she wants things done. Overall the class wasn't my favorite but then again math is not my favorite
Ms. Martin will give you a homework quiz every week. This is her version of grading homework. I never did the homework, and I still passed the quizzes. I taught myself the material because she moved so slow that most of the time you had to learn the rest of the chapter on your own anyway. Class time was more of a study hall for other classes.
I loved this class! Very different from the usual chug-and-plug math class. It makes you think about things in a new way. Dr. Martin is very patient and understanding, grades fairly. She has a good sense of humor, which keeps things lively. Very enthusiastic, even at 8:00 a.m.
She is one to just explain everything and goes over a lot of examples.
I have taken Ms. Martins class once two years ago and again recently for a better grade. I received D's both times. Though I received a B in Fightmaster's Mth 152 (He is an excellent teacher!) Mrs. Martin is the WORST teacher at Western. They need to replace her. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. Her tests are poorly written. You have been warned.
If you want to pass the class you HAVE to go to class. She is very knowledgeable about the subject which can make things difficult ( she sometimes goes in to too much detail). She is very nice but pretty to the point when it comes to class. She offers some extra credit but it is all in class so make sure to go
She is excellent - best math teacher I've ever had. Really. She explains in down to earth way. Very unique and energetic, enthusiastic, has a creative way of presenting material, really awesome attitude, easy to get along with, fair and understanding, makes it easy to want to learn. But don't take her unless you're willing to do the work.
This course is mostly arithmetic and common sense. She gives you reviews that tell you exactly what will be on the test. She even gives take home quizzes that you can get help with - from other students as well as tutors. I don't see how ANYBODY could get less than a B in this class if they showed up for class and did any work at all.
Dr. Martin is the perfect math teacher. Her requirements are clear and fair. She is flexible when dealing with students and understanding when grading tests. She obviously cares about her students and shows it through much enthusiasm and encouragement of class discussion. Every math teacher should be as organized and together as Dr. Martin is.
PEOPLE, BE WARNED! If you care about your grades, GPA etc, then DO NOT take this course with Sarah Martin. I wish I was warned before putting myself in this mess. She's a good person and everything, but replacing this lady would be an act of rescuing both students and her. Do yourself a favor and take James Fightmaster. Ended up with a B & NOT F
She only grades test but she gives you extra credit on each one. The test are exactly like the practice review. If you study and take notes then you should have no trouble. However, if you do not pay attention and don't do the homework or reviews then you will not understand.
Excellent professor. I learned A LOT in this course, feel ready for calculus next semester. Very caring, enthusiastic, provides thorough review sheets before tests, gives take-home quizzes that emphasize major concepts. If you have a brain and do the work, you should get an A.
awesome instructor. great course!
she's a great teacher - fair, cares about students, excellent explanations - very thorough, wants you to understand, not just memorize stuff. ignore the negative crap you read here - just sour grapes by people who didn't do the work.
FANTASTIC CLASS
caring, fair, great sense of humor, very fair quizzes and tests, thorough explanations - explains WHY, not just how to get the answer
Distance class is clearly laid out, all assignments and tests are listed in the syllabus. you know exactly what is expected and when.
totally awesome prof!!!!
caring, fair, very creative, obviously loves math and teaching
Nice lady, not too great of a teacher. She does let you use a notecard of notes on tests so there is no reason you shouldn't pass.
Makes you want to learn more, very creative, great sense of humor, wants you to get math, patient, fair
