She is very down-to-earth and likeable (sp?). She wasn't too demanding, and understood that most students have other classes too. The tests were fair, and homework was rare (that rhymes!). We discussed real-life topics in Spanish, which made learning the language more interesting. Take her!
I had this prof.during the summer, she is really nice. But I was taking this class for the second time, and I don't think if I would have been taking this for the first time, I would not have done well. B/c she didn't really explain things very well, but if you asked then she would tell you. But other wise she wasn't that bad.
I had this prof for spanish in the summer. She was a great professor and I would highly recomend getting her if you can.
Professora Mather is great. She is really helpful, and was always ready to teach/very into teaching. She was a lot of fun, and really cares about each student. She helped confirm that getting my degree in Spanish was what I want to do!
AMAZING TEACHER! Knows how to have fun and keeps class fun!! willing to help with everything very approachable! TAKE SPANISH WITH MATHER YOU WILL LEARN SO MUCH!
Prof. Mather is a wonderful asset to GVSU's Spanish dept. She is very caring and is willing to help you. Tests are pretty easy and she isn't one of those hard core teachers that gives you a hard time if you don't understand what she is saying. Instead she keeps repeating until you finally understand and respond. Take her, you won't be disappointed.
I loved Senora Mather. She was very helpful, and very enthusiastic (especially having her at 9 a.m.) If you ever have any question she is willing to help you out. Her tests aren't extremely difficult, but make sure you study. The only bad thing is having the class at 9 am, otherwise i love it!!!!
senora mathers was an excellent teacher, but you have to study and work hard. im not gonna kid you. she really cares about her students and wants you to get the best spanish education possible. i would recommend her, but not if you want an easy A.
Profesora Mather is very nice and very helpful. She's funny too! Her 102 class consists of 4 compositions, 2 presentations (w/partners), and exams and quizzes. Teaches mostly in Spanish but will later explain in English too sometimes. She is very understanding so don't hesitate to talk to her about any problems.
Best spanish professor I have ever had. she is interesting, fun, knowledgeable, helpful, really wants you to learn the language! But you have to work, you have to do your homework, study, etc. But you will learn a lot in her class! I would recommend her above ALL other spanish profs!
I did not find this profesor very helpful. I was in love with spanish before I took this class, but her lack of excitment and useful knowledge made me dread class. She was not an easy grader, but not too hard either. She would get annoyed with people who didn't understand, and wouldn't help them. I would not take her again!
Wonderful instructor. She is understanding and a great teacher. Adjusts pace if necessary. Strives for high participation and questions students to initiate thought. Loved her class, but spent a lot of time writing my own story and making it because I used puffy paints- I do not suggest that! Takes too long to dry... loved reading it to the kid
Best Spanish professor I've had at GV! You learn a lot in her classes and she makes it fun and interesting. She's very understanding, helpful, and easy to talk to outside of class. She wants her students to do well and learn Spanish. Her Spanish is not hard to understand and her directions are clear. Great professor, take her if you can!
A wonderful lady. Her class is hard, but mostly it's just the workload, she grades tough, but nothing that studying can't help. If you are well-cultured, it will be a good time; conversely, she's not the type to talk about the Kardashians, so don't try...
This class was based on stories from the text book but focused on discussion and speaking. I took this class way later in my Spanish education than I should have but still found it interesting and useful. Mathers is very good at reading people and their abilities.
Helpful, interesting, wasn't too hard, but still pushed the students. I didn't like her dependence on the internet program, but I think that all of the professors use it.
I had her for Spanish Business. She knows her stuff. She assigns homework but none of it is for a grade, just do if for participation. I recommend her. Take her
I loved Professor Mather! She was so nice and really helpful! There's a lot of in class activities and you have to spend time in the language lab, but it's not bad at all. Awesome professor! TAKE HER!
Professor Mather is the bomb! She is extremely helpful and a really good teacher. I loved this class.
Easily the nicest prof I've ever had. She is extremely helpful and friendly. She inspires confidence in people's spanish speaking. I learned alot from her and actually enjoy Spanish after taking her class. She creates a fun learning environment. There are plenty of opportunities to be creative and still learn at the same time. Highly recommend her!
She is a good spanish teacher. She is not extra easy, but she is fair. You have to study. She is American and knows her stuff so she expects you to do the same. She speaks spanish 80% of the time and will continue speaking in spanish even when you are frustrated. She uses the book as well as the spanish website so explore it. shes good though.
Prof Mather is good but not great. She is very good in class but she is not helpful outside of class. She assigns busy work and she is very unclear on due dates. She is also very unfair with attendance (she will mark you late even if you are coming in at the exact time your class starts and you will be penalized for it). She is just an ok prof.
Prof Mather is excellent! She can have her favorites but she also is willing to help struggling learners. Her spanish is very clear with almost no accent so it helps at beginners level of spanish. I for sure recommend her.
Professor Mather is beyond fantastic. Whoever said she isn't helpful out of class must not have tried. She's always been extremely understanding and helpful in and out of class. I took her for 102 and 201. She's funny, helpful, and an all-around wonderful person. I recommend her 100%, especially if Spanish isn't your thing. She is fantastic!!!
Profesora Mather is amazing. She is very willing to help any student, and does not just teach you lessons from the book but provides context for what you are learning and uses real examples from Spain. She has influenced me a lot and her love of Spanish has inspired me to minor in it.
Prof. Mather hands down is the nicest prof. She was encouraging and helpful. She truly wants us to succeed and is will to take measures to getting there. Like any SPA you need LL hours and do vistas. Also weekly quizzes, two compositions, group project, and a fun oral exam. I recommend her to anyone at any level of SPA. Made Spanish fun!
Unhelpful, assigns ridiculous busy work assignments, refuses to explain ANTYHING in English. Do not take her class!
Easily the best professor I have had at GVSU! She is always willing to help explain something if you don't understand! If you do the work, you will get an A. I plan on registering for every other Spanish class she teaches! Take her!
Professor Mather is an amazing professor. She is 100 percent understanding and makes you actually enjoy a foreign language. If you struggle, she understands and helps you in a very effective way. Amazing professor all around.
Great professor! I was intimidated by this course but Mather is so nice and makes it easy to do well, which boosts your confidence. Learned a lot and made great friends since the class is MTWH. Recommended!
I like Mather a lot. She does speak a lot in Spanish and refuses to use English unless she has to, but she'll repeat herself and if you don't understand, will not make you feel stupid. The work is easy enough, and she's very helpful and eager. She's good at what she does.
Profesora Mather is awesome! She's really fun and if you add comedy to the class she will make everything a lot easier. Some days all you do is talk and a lot of the homework is online but you get multiple chances to do it and ample time. Great professor to learn Spanish from!
Very nice but speaks only Spanish after the first day of class which makes it very difficult when you've never taken Spanish before. Other than that she utilizes resources well in class and tries to add some comedy in class also.
She is nice and she only speaks in Spanish during class so you learn more eventually. She is an ok teacher though she seems to be not all there at times and seems to get distracted easily. She is super nice and very understanding that you have other classes and homework is not due until test day technically.
She is pretty helpful, and she makes class a bit more enjoyable.
Profesor Mathers is amazing, she is so helpful and clear. She makes the concepts really easy to understand and gives a lot of practice which helps in the long run.
Professor Mather was awesome! I highly recommend her as a professor. You are allowed 4 skips so class is basically mandatory, but in spanish that's what you want to not fall behind. The quizzes and tests were easy. She told you exactly what was to be on them. On top of that she was a nice person and was willing to meet with you outside of class.
She was one of the most amazing professors. Super nice and will help you after class anytime. She speaks in Spanish the whole time but it is easy to understand what she is saying. I would take her again any day!
Prof. Mather is a really cool nice lady. She speaks Spanish always but it's understandable enough. I didn't do very well because I skipped to much class, don't do that. Tests and quizzes are easy. Have to do online homework.
Always speaks spanish, so that can be kind of difficult though she does do a good job at making clear of what she is saying. Tests are easy if you know the vocab. The final speaking was 10 minutes long and unscripted though.
Mather is amazing. She is probably one of the best GV spanish profs because she understands the struggle and will help instead of making you feel ridiculous. She can be really funny and attendance is apparently marked, but I only went to a few and I still passed with an A. I liked the working together atmosphere of her class.
Great Professor overall. I wish I could have more classes with her!
By far my favorite prof this semester. SeƱora Mather knows that everyone learns in different ways and she's more than willing to take more time to explain things and help you if you need help. She has a great sense of humor and you can tell she genuinely wants her students to do well. If I could take her for 102 then I would
She's so nice and an amazing professor and she's beautiful!
I didn't need the class for anything but to brush up after a few years off, was best in the class but felt like she fought me every step of the way. Instead of pushing my abilities and encouraging me she threw the book at me and snagged me on minuscule details. Don't take if you're a creative thinker.
Overall, she was a great professor. Although I did not like how 80% of our class work was online. Also she was not always very clear about assignments. Make sure to check assignments on blackboard because she didn't mention some in class.
So I really do feel like Senora Mathers is an excellent teacher, however she made me very nervous. When I would answer questions in class and something about it was wrong, I felt very embarrassed and sometimes she made me feel stupid because I was struggling. So for me, it wasn't the best learning environment. But she does teach Spanish very well.
Professor Mather was way easier than any of my high school Spanish professors. She grades very easily and is quite understanding. Her quizzes and exams were straightforward and pretty simple. She always speaks Spanish very slowly and is easy to understand. Overall, great prof!
easy exams, easy to understand, and very helpful. One of my favorite professors.
Great professor. Was very passionate about teaching Spanish. Spoke mostly in Spanish halfway through the semester which could be difficult for students who had no prior Spanish knowledge. Highly recommend because the class is not that difficult and she is very nice!
She spoke and taught only in Spanish, but it was beneficial to constantly hear the language during class. Class work reflected the exams. She genuinely loves what she teaches and she follows the syllabus.
She is wonderful!! She's nice, helpful, and the class is an easy A if you show up.
She really cares that you are learning, but she also makes you work for it. She's very passionate about Spanish and teaching.
Have a hard time speaking and/or understanding spanish? DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR. She will never speak english EVEN IF THE WHOLE CLASS DOESN'T UNDERSTAND. And she studied in Spain so she has that "accent" when speaking spanish (the "lisp").
Class was usually pretty fun and easy, and tests and quizzes were easy and nothing unexpected. The online homework was never difficult, just time consuming. Mather is pretty easy to understand, and is accessible to her students
201 was the last Spanish class I had to take, and it took a lot out of me. There's always something to worry about in the class: online homework, journals, quizzes, projects, etc. Her assignments tend to be a little unreasonable as well, but I may just be complaining. She'd be fine if you're a Spanish major, but probably annoy ones that aren't.
Professor Mather is a great professor and gives you a super solid foundation to your Spanish learning. I learned so much in this class, and Prof. Mather really cares about each student succeeding. She doesnt expect perfection and allows mistakes which was really beneficial for learning a new language. Would highly recommend her!!
One of my fave profs! She is dedicated to Spanish and loves teaching it. The class is worth a lot of points, there is online homework, 5 exams and vocab quizzes for each chapter. So if you do bad on something it doesn't effect your grade as much. She expects a lot from you with the assignments but she is always there to help.
her class has a 'high school feel' very laid back but informative. I just wish she had us do more speaking participation in class so that our pronuciation gets stronger throughout the year. A lot of the students in my class spoke english if they didnt know the vocab & that made her upset. Make sure to check for online hw frequently
Before taking this class I really enjoyed the subject. I worked hard and got a tutor and still did poor in the class. She gives an unnecessary amount of homework that was usually different than the quizzes and tests. She only speaks in spanish even when no one understands. Shes a nice person but I didnt like her as a professor.
She is a very great professor that cares about you doing well. At first it was very hard to get used to because she will only speak in Spanish. There are 5 exams but lowest one is dropped and they arent super hard. Theres not much hw just make sure to check online often. There are a lot of assignments, so its easy to keep a good grade overall.
Im far from a Spanish major but still needed to take the required 201 for my major and Im glad I took it with her. She is a generally caring and understanding person. I was having a rough semester dealing with personal issues and she was kind and forgiving when something came up. In addition, it is clear she is very passionate about her classes.
Mather is such a great teacher. She is so nice and funny. She speaks in Spanish most of the time but she really helps you learn Spanish. I learned so much in this class. Very fun.
not a fan
Professor Mather is a great teacher. She really cares about her students' well being and wants you to do well in the class. Her class has a pretty laid-back feel although participation does matter to her as well as homework completion. She talks solely in Spanish which does take some getting used to, although it proves helpful in the long run.
Professor Mather was one of the best and also one of the worst spanish professors I've had at Grand Valley. Her lectures are very confusing and the class moves at a very fast pace. There is a lot of in class work, but very little actual homework. We have quizzes and tests basically every other week and it can be a lot at times.
Sarah is a really good prof. She speaks in Spanish a lot & it's hard to understand because she goes at a very fast pace. She is really helpful, but doesn't always help with pronunciation very much. There is usually a quiz or test every week & a lot of homework online, but if you just study it's easy to keep up
Good professor, but I would not recommend her if you hate group work - I'm already very frustrated with this class because of poor group work situations. She talks very fast and lectures are taught in 99 percent Spanish, but if you need help with understanding don't be afraid to ask - she's very approachable.
Professor Mather is the sweetest! I truly wanted to be friends with her, and I have the highest level respect for her. She is extremely helpful and attentive to her students on what they need to be successful in the class. She also promotes student interaction. I know my Spanish improved while taking it with her. The homework is also not excessive.
DO NOT take Sarah for any online course. I'm not sure how she is in person, but she gave us 10 assignments a week to turn, lots of busy work and quizzes, AND she was a touch grader and never gives good feedback. She tries really hard to make the class extremely difficult and won't just hand out A's even if you deserve them. DO NOT take her.
I think she has a good heart, but sometimes deadlines weren't clear and exams/quizzes popped up suddenly. Don't be afraid to ask for clarification. I highly recommend studying a lot outside of class and making a text group chat with other classmates. She's a good person, just not super clear about requirements.
Learning any new language is obviously going to be a challenge. This class has a lot of homework but Prof. Mather really just wants to make sure you're prepared to move on to higher level Spanish classes if this is something you really want to learn. It can be intimidating but she's very sweet.
Poorly planned lesson/homework schedule.
In class, she only speaks Spanish and expects you to respond back to her in Spanish. She is very caring and extremely helpful. There was a decent amount of homework but over the course of the whole week, it was not that bad. There are 5 chapter and 5 vocab exams that are medium difficulty. The final is an oral presentation, paper, and small exam.
Teaches fast but wants to help you learn
Class was really fun and required all students to participate in full spanish. Highly recommend some spanish going into her class. Class work deadlines sometimes unclear and lots of homework. Overall though, genuine 10/10 professor and really cares about her students. Expect difficulty and uncomfortable situations but if you make it, its worth it.
Im a freshman at GV and just finished my first semester. Señora Mather is probably the best Spanish instructor Ive had my whole 6 years of taking Spanish, and letting her go next semester is very sad. Showing up to class is necessary and homework can be heavy, but its very beneficial and she guides everyone through it!
Professor Mathers did a great job immersing us in the language and teaching actual usage instead of just vocab. She does spend a lot of class time speaking Spanish, but its using vocab you've learned and due to it being a beginner class she does switch to English if we don't understand. Just make sure to do the homework and study!
She basically called me stupid in front of the whole class. She also started talking in only Spanish really soon into the semester even though it was a beginner class. She is a heavy lecturer and moves very quickly through the material. She also shows her opinions on her students.
Professor Mather is a great professor! Although she starts talking in Spanish very early into the semester, she does translate to English or uses body cues to express what she means. She does expect students to complete daily homework, which sometimes gets to be a bit heavy at times. She is incredibly helpful though and listens to her students!
Was a good professor and taught well, but gave an excessive amount of homework and was not super organized, so it was hard to tell what was going on and when. Many did not know days that we would have tests or quizzes, or the requirements for certain assignments. Also Blackboard was rarely utilized but scattered when it was.
if you have any sort of social anxiety, i would avoid taking her class. she will call on you without your hand raised, and if you don't know the answer, she will stand there and just wait for you to get it right. going to her class stressed me out daily because of this. this course was also very fast paced and it was hard to keep up.
Professor Mather is awesome! Spanish is really challenging but she really made the class fun and got people involved who otherwise wouldn't have. She does start speaking Spanish right off at the start and she does give a lot of homework but her office hours are very helpful if you're struggling in her class. Taking her for the foreseeable future!
Amazing prof. I had some attendance issues because I got sick, and she was very accommodating and made sure to be clear about my prospects going forward, but encouraged me not to drop the class. She explains things in a way that is very understandable, and I enjoyed talking to her in a class setting.
