I had Sarah for lab! She's a brand new teacher! So soft spoken and kind! tries to make this class interesting. Sometimes needs to give clearer instructions when doing lab activities. Overall she was great! Went out of her way to be helpful!
Sarah was not very clear with lab instructions and was a fairly harsh marker when it came to assignments. She would help if you asked, but sometimes that didn't help either. Not horrible if you must, but try for someone else.
It was her first time teaching this course and she did a wonderful job. She is very helpful if you have a problem and very accessible through email. The extra review sessions that she has through out the semester are really worth your time. She is not the most engaging prof but she does explain things in a concise manner. I would take her again.
Just love her learned more in her lab than in lecture. I would recommend people to take her lab. I like her teaching style and also she gives time in class to study.
Dr. Orton has to be one of the best professors at Mount Royal. Her lectures are concise and very helpful but participation and attendance is vital. The more you participate in class, the better grade youre likely to receive. Sarah loves to be engaged with her students which is always helpful and shes tremendously enthusiastic and sweet! Her tests
Dr. Orton has to be one of the best professors. She is tremendously enthusiastic and sweet! Her tests are extremely fair, but to ensure an A+, simply relying on power points wont do. READ YOUR TEXTBOOK and most importantly, UNDERSTAND the concepts, dont just memorize. Over all, an easy A course with Dr. Orton as your prof : )
SARAH IS THE BEST! I had her for lab for bio 1220 and she was just amazing! Her class expectations are clear and she makes the lab exams fair. You also need to do a lot of self studying.
Sarah is the absolute most helpful professor I have encountered so far. She would do anything in her power to help students do good in her class. She also cared a lot about her students success in her class which gives you encouragement to actually do well. I ended getting an amazing mark and would definetly take her again
The best BIOL1220/1221 lab professor that you could have! She explains everything that is required to know and teaches you exactly what will be tested in the exam. Without her I would have failed Biol1220, she was a better instructor than my LEC prof. Take her class, it will benefit you for the course itself.
SHE IS AAHHMAAAZING. LOVE HER LOVE HER LOVE HER!! She is also so good looking! :) The way she explains things is incredible. She mad biology so much fun. I loved the way she reviewed the material esp since it took extra time out of her schedule where she didn't even get paid. She really cares! I love her explanations when u ask a question! TAKE HER
Sarah was very helpfull in giving good and clear feedback on what you did wrong on assignments, as well as all the test question in the lab section were within the powerpoint slides online
Sarah is amazing! Lectures are clear and easy to follow along, and the midterm and final are more than fair. She genuinely wants to see her students do well, she offers out of class review sessions and in-class group "olympics" activities. If you base your studying off her notes, you'll do amazing on exams. I'm sad I wont be in her class next sem
She is a great Prof! She tries her best to help her students She answers all the questions She has her own ways to encourage students to participate in class such"Olympics"which is a good way to review the notes Her notes and lectures are very good and helpful Her outside class review session are very helpful She marks fairly She is a hard worker.
Not the best, not the worst. Lectures were boring and hard to stay engaged and focused in. Doesn't give you time to write anything from the slides so make sure to do really good notes on your own time. Review olympics were the most helpful thing she did.
Sarah makes a challenging course interesting and manageable. Lectures are engaging, and she puts lots of effort into class preparation and her slides. A great instructor, take her class if you can.
Sarah is an amazing prof who really cares about her students and wants them to do well. If you go to the lectures and study her notes you will do really well on the midterm and final.
Sarah is an amazing prof. She really cares about how well you do in the course and will hold numerous review sessions to ensure maximum success. I had her for both lab and lecture, and in both, she gave enough information and gave ways to easily remember things so when it came to studying it felt like a breeze.(although you should still study hard)
Professor Sarah is the best bio prof at MRU. She cares so much for her students and she put a lot of effort to make sure her students succeed and understand the concepts. Unfortunately I had her for my lab section only.I wish I had her for my lecture section too. She explains very well and gives an excellent ways of how to remember things.
One of the better teachers I have had. She makes all the classes fun and rewarding with iClicker's and just the overall energy and brightness she brings. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. If you are blessed with the chance to have her as an instructor TAKE HER!!!
She was an amazing Prof. Nothing but respect. So understanding and cares for students.
BEST PROF AT MRU. HER LECTURES ARE AMAZING AND INTERACTIVE
I love this professor. She was so understanding and always there for her students
If you have the chance please enroll. She is the best prof I've had in my 3 years so far.
Great prof honestly. She takes the time to ensure that the class understands the topic. She relates the topic visually and in a way that everyone is able to relate to
She's an amazing prof that makes her own slides and really cares whether the students are understanding. She puts effort into making the concept more bearable and unlike most profs her tests reflects what she actually taught in class. The only thing that was hard was the online MINDTAP quizzes. Use online textbook did not use textbook in class.
Sarah is a really intelligent and caring prof! CMB is a difficult course but I found the midterms and final were more than fair as long as you studied for them. She had reviews for the midterms and final which were very helpful. Her slides are incredibly detailed and thorough and I found you didn't even have to read the text! Take her if you can!!!
Sarah is an excellent professor, her lectures are very helpful and clear. The exams are more than fair and the expectations are 100% clear. She cares about the success of her students and does amazing in-class reviews before the exams. Her classes are well prepared and she explains in a way that makes the material easy to understand.
Wonderfully in-depth and caring. Do the readings before class and she'll help you every step of the way.
After having taken BIOL1202 with Sarah, I was so excited to get in to her BIOL2202 class. Sarah is incredibly passionate and very knowledgeable about what she is teaching. Her explanations are very helpful and put into understandable terms. Easily the best biology professor I have experienced thus far.
Sarah was fantastic for the CMB course. Much better than other profs who teach this course. Very caring and wants her students to succeed. No surprises on any of her exams, very fair tests.
Dr. Orton is one of the best profs at MRU. She is very knowledgable, her lectures are amazing and she cares a lot for her students. Her tests are very fair and there are no surprises, she wants you to do well. Show her respect by not being late and actually pay attention to her lectures.
One of the best profs Ive ever had! You can see that she tries her best to ensure all her students understand the material. She cares for her students success and is always willing to help. Tests are fair and there were no surprises. You get what you give so its an easy A if you put in the work! 100% would recommend her!
all I can say is memorize every single power point slide and you will do fine. one mistake I made was studying for the midterm from the review she posted and NOT studying from her powerpoint. Literally there's nothing on the midterms / exams that isnt in her extremely detailed power points.
One of the best professors I've ever had. She taught my lab and lecture component and marked everything fairly. She doesn't allow phones in class and honestly it helped me focus more. She is always willing to explain in different ways and without any high school biology I was able to almost get an A+ with not much studying outside of class.
Sarah did a great job delivering the content for this course. She gave many chances to practice the material before tests. Everything you need to know and everything thats on the midterm/final is in her lecture power points. She is very knowledgeable and very helpful when it comes to asking questions.
Professor Sarah Orton is a really good professor she teaches everything you need to know for final exam and midterms I would say the best thing to study is her PowerPoint slides dont study textbook questions as there is nothing on finals and midterms that wasnt on the power points .
Sarah has the best PowerPoints, everything you will ever need to know for midterms/finals can be found on her slides/practice questions. She is amazing at rephrasing and rewording anything you might not understand so that you will get it, and provides analogies for almost everything that help you remember the content easily. Helps to attend lecture
The concept of iclicker's should be changed to weekly quizzes, so that instead of worrying about the next iclicker, you can pay attention to the material instead. Tests are fair, but she can be condescending at times.
This course is very content heavy and has a very fast pace, so be prepared to do a lot of work. Sarah's PowerPoints are very well done. The midterms are fair but there is a lot to memorize as Sarah asks about even the smallest of details. iClickers are done every class and count for marks. Cares about students but also comes off very condescending
Content in the course is extremely test heavy and she will question you on the smallest details. Having a basic understanding will not slide, you need to have an excellent understanding to even pass the exams. She is also extremely sarcastic and snarky, constantly giving attitude and has a rude tone. Not approachable at all.
Content heavy, lots of details to remember. iclickers are fair if you pay attention / do the readings, but questions focus on details. Don't skip class, easy to fall behind! Recommend drawing pathways and writing down what happens at each step until you've memorized it. Intimidating prof, but great at teaching & has great powerpoints.
sarah has really good notes but she overcomplicates a lot of the topics which makes it hard to learn it. i found i understood it better when i looked over it myself. she's not an awful prof but the way she comes across can be annoying and rude. she expects everything to be prereq knowledge and is condescending when iClicker marks turn out low.
Dr. Sarah was the best instructor I ever had. Caring, supporting every one equally. She managed to simply such taught materials to easy to memorize & understand. I did not even needed to study that much for her class, just attending her class was very enough. I'm surprised to find some negative comments, that's really does not reflect her efforts.
I had sarah for my first year of university for my first uni Biology class. She was amazing! She had very interactive lectures and assignments so if you attended you did good. Overall would take another class with her, especially cause she went out of her way to make us name tags and learn our names!
Terrible with technology, zero info on expectations, zero info on assignments, terrible communication, all course work expected to be done outside of lecture time, bad planning and class structure, AVOID
Great overall professor. Very professional and knowledgeable of the course material, which makes it comfortable to ask her questions without fear of feeling annoying. Very caring if you address her with respect and makes appointments for office hours. Is very accommodating if you're sick or miss classes. Overall very caring and one of the nicest
A kind instructor that is passionate about Biology. Lots of different diagrams, charts, interactive power-points. Student participation is highly encouraged in this class and Sarah constantly asks questions to promote active learning. Exams are fair given that question were based only on material covered in lectures and slides.
Sarah is an easygoing professor who genuinely cares about the success of her students. Her powerpoints are very easy to follow and she is great at explaining complicated topics. CMB is a class full of terminology and Sarah made everything seem more straightforward than it was. I would recommend taking any class taught by Sarah.
Dr. Orton is one of the best profs out there teaching a biology course, she works really hard delivering biol 1202 effectively. iClickers and Mindtap are pretty good in terms of boosting your average in the class. Midterm and Final are fair just a long as you study from her slide lectures.
Do not hesitate to choose Sarah as your prof - she is EXCELLENT! She goes over absolutely everything during lectures and posts all the slides online. There's weekly mindtap assignments which are basically mini tests, but you get 3 tries on each attempt so its easy if you've done the readings. Sarah definitely wants/helps her students to succeed.
Her slides are amazing everything on the final exam was in her slides were amazing she gives great feedback and really wants to see you succeed
Everything you need to know is on her slides. They have cover all the necessary information. Attending her classes is important because she does i-clicker and because she explains concepts.
Solid. Expectations are clear and her exams have no surprises. She can be a little condescending when it's clear students haven't read ahead and INSISTS that her method of teaching is best. The slides were the most evident case of this mindset and it really pisses me off that she can't just offer a better format for students with different devices.
Not the greatest, not the worst. Average prof who believes she has the best slides in the world, which is perhaps true. Boring course if you are not a CMB course concentration fan. Too much memorization. There are no labs unfortunately, which means this course is extremely test heavy, ugh! and yeah she is condescending to say the least..
I really enjoyed this class. It was clear she wanted everyone to succeed. There was lots of resources available and she was very friendly.
Quite a tough course, requiring a lot of memorization. If you are not a CMB concentration fan, this core course may drive you up the wall. Her slides are good, exams not so much. She insists that a LOT of people got FULL MARKS on her exams but then the argument she provides in her emails makes it look like that's not the case. No labs ugh
I hate iClickers, they take away from enjoying and understanding the lessons. You are always stressed trying to figure out the right answer. Exam heavy course as there are no labs which sucks! Other courses have weekly quizzes which are far better in my opinion. Difficult material, too much memorization, and she is condescending as well.. Tough !
This course needs an overhaul. It is so lecture heavy, boring, and difficult. Midterms and finals have huge weightage. was aware of all students struggling, yet she kept saying most people got full marks on her exams. It was clear she was not telling the truth. Too bad this course is a core requirement. iclickers should have been weekly quizzes!!!
Sarah can come off as intimidating but she's actually really nice and just wants her students to do well. All the tests were extremely fair and she does a good job of explaining content. This course is heavy and tedious content wise and there is no lab component to bump up the grades but if you go to class and do weekly review you will be fine.
Sarah's slides were so so amazing!! Midterms were based directly on the practice question in the slides, which made studying super straightforward! Other profs would ask questions that try to trick you, but Sarah made sure the questions were testing your knowledge and wasn't trying to confuse you. Def take bio with her if you can!!
Sarah is amazing. This class has a lot of content that is not possible to cover all during lecture, but she does her best to cover it all and explains really well. She also includes practice questions in her slides that really help with studying and focuses only on the material we will be tested on. If I could take her again, I 100% would.
Awful and lecture heavy course with tons and tons of material pertaining to masters and doctoral level. This course is unnecessarily made hard. I am looking forward to retaking this course in the spring with a far better prof. She is condescending and snarky. Wished there were some weekly assignments instead of those hugely weighted midterms. Bleh!
CMB is a content heavy course but Sarah's lectures are intriguing and assist in learning. She puts a lot of time and energy into her powerpoint's and they really aid in learning. She cares deeply about her students and their success and is always accessible for questions.
Content heavy course like everybody else said here. She tried to make the lectures palatable but unfortunately they didn't work for me at all. Too much emphasis on exams, and no labs. Wish she had given some weekly assignments/quizzes to boost grades like other courses. No labs so this course appears even tougher as compared to the others.
Sarah is an amazing prof, she teaches content clearly and throughly, she always double checks that everyone understands tougher topics. She clearly outlines her expectations and all exam material is found in her lecture slides (which were well organized). The class itself is difficult and majority of your grade comes from midterms or final
Sarah is the best 1221 prof by far!! She is extremely knowledgeable and her slides are very well made. She also has practice questions in her slides that helped alot. Her midterms were very fair (easier than kartika's or nicole's for sure). Take 1221 with Sarah, she's a gem!
Very very good powerpoints. Could learn for exams solely from lecture slides and you're good to go. Sarah can be a little condescending and very authoritative but her teaching style is just the best. Sarah gives you tips and study methods to learn CMB and it helps ALOT.
Sarah is AMAZING. I could not write better praise for her. My favorite prof of all time. She's one of the best professors at this university. She is so clear in her expectations, she's a little tough but she's extremely fair and as long as you pay attention and study, you'll ace her classes. Just put in the work and please don't skip class.
Giving her a bad review simply because she expects the class to teach themselves the entire course. On top of that she claims slides are a privilege so she forces you to read out the textbook which contains so much irrelevant information. If you're ready to teach yourself then this is the class for you.
Sarah is a helpful prof who is very knowledgeable about bio. Her lectures are decent, and I learned to enjoy the I-clickers and they helped me to learn the topic. I don't like how she makes you learn the material before the lecture, since the assignment is due before the lecture. It doesn't make much sense to me to do that, but to each their own.
- Sarah is very smart but super harsh! she makes u learn the lecture then come to class because this is "university" if u cant teach then why are you teaching.most of her power points are over the place, u cant take pictures of them nor whatever is on the board without permission& talks super fast and will tell u that she won't get any slower
I liked her way of teaching. The powerpoints are clear and provide you with the information you need for the tests. You have to do pre-lecture assignments where you read the textbook and do an assignment, but they're easy if you actually read and there's always google when in doubt. She cares about her students, and iclickers were easy and helpful.
Sarah is very knowledgeable and it shows. She cares for student success but whatever grade you want is up to you. I found the course load to be very reasonable and exams and assignments were spread out. The textbook she uses is strictly for pre-lecture assignments, it was a little redundant. Her PowerPoint's are fantastic for learning the material.
I would not take her again, take this class if you wanna teach yourself the materials!
Sarah is a great professor. She genuinely cares for her students and is very knowledgeable. This is a heavy course but as long as you show up and put in the effort you will succeed. I would definitely take Sarah's class again in the future.
Cares very much about teaching and if students do well, and it shows. She has amazing slides, which have all of the information needed for tests. Takes time for in-class review before tests, where she allows questions snd goes over some slides again. Highly recommend.
Sarah is an awesome professor! She completes spent so much of her time customizing her slides to make the contents more engaging and easier to understand. Additionally, her slides contain the most important points to study so you can focus more on it instead of the textbooks. Overall, take her because out of all profs for biol 1221, she is the best
Sarah is by far one of the best prof! She is caring and she spent so much of her time customizing her slides to make the contents more engaging and interesting. Some student might not like her slides but the slides are very condensed and to the point where you dont have to study extra materials. Overall, I love Sarah and I would take her again!
Sarah is amazing, she explains concepts well, and even though you still need to do a lot of self study her lectures help a lot. She often stays after class to answer any questions. She's using her own slides which take a while to get used to, but follow her advice and use slide show mode. I'd definitely try to get in her class if you can
Sarah is an excellent prof! She makes her slides based on the course objectives, and she condenses down the textbook to only the key information we have to know. Her slides also break down complex concepts well and provide many practice questions. Tests are fair as long as you show up to lecture and put in a bit of time to study.
Sarah is a good professor. She will mark your stuff fairly.
Sarahs slide condense the textbook material down to only the key points. She really cares about her students and wants them to do well. She puts a lot of effort into making sure you are taught all the necessary information needed for the midterm. Sarah is one of the few profs I would take again.
Honestly I find this class not helpful. You have to learn the materials prior to her teaching it. I get overstimulated with her slides to the point where I don't know what to study. If you can study prior to class maybe her class is for you but for someone who relies on the instructor to teach to learn the material… I'd say find someone else.
Sara goes above and beyond to make sure we understand the content of our classes. Very open to in class questions and creates an engaging atmosphere.
Sarah is wonderful. She is the best teacher I've ever had and I wish I could spend another semester taking her classes. She is fun, kind and clearly cares about the success of her students. She volunteers her time to provide extra review for the class and she deserves a raise.
She is very good at answering questions and does her best at making the content digestible. She is also very kind Sarah asked if the students wanted an extra review class let wasn't booked so she wasn't payed for it. She really cares about students.
Sarah is great and actually makes human physiology make sense and interesting.
Sarah was a great professor, i found the course itself generally easy and Sarah did a great job teaching. everything on the midterm was covered in class and there were no surprises. Sarah really cares about her students and gives us the resources to do well in class. Theres homework every week but no tests except the midterm and final.
AMAZING professor. There were no surprises on the tests and very straight forward. Sarah is so caring and really knows her stuff. I would take her for every class if I could. She also tries to learn everyone's name in class and will answer any question without making you feel dumb.
she actually care very deeply about the subject she teaches and even gives tips on how to study for exams and midterms, she draws very clear diagrams and has a sense of humour that for sure helps lighten up the lectures!
Sarah teaches well and is very clear about her expectations. However. I can't be the only one that can't handle the way she talks! When she teaches, she goes from a normal volume then suddenly, randomly speaks so quietly that she whispers. She does this multiple times in a lecture. I'm sorry but I just can't do it.
Probably one of the best professors I've ever had. Sarah genuinely cares about her students' success, and I really appreciate that. Her lecture notes are AMAZING, and her iClicker questions are helpful for learning. The midterm and final are pretty much identical to the lectures. Sarah is engaging, thoughtful, and just an overall great person.
Sarah is one of the best professors I've ever taken a class from. I'm an international student and learned the subjects that I couldn't understand in my native language thanks to Sarah! She helps you learn the course very well with her materials. I feel very lucky to have taken this course from such a qualified professor.
Took bio1201 with Sarah in fall, great professor, her lectures are easy to understand and the iclickers help with retaining the information as well. Very caring and prioritizes her students success throughout the course. Best prof i've had so far, I still talk about her till this day.
Sarah was great! Super nice, and really wants all her students to succeed. Tests are very fair, there are no surprises. As long as you take good notes and review all the slides there's no reason why you shouldn't do well in the class. Would definitely take another class with her!
I went on the Oxford Field School (GNED 3010) with Sarah and it was amazing! 90% of course content was covered prior to the trip, and it was very manageable to do and understandable, even for a non-science student. The trip was incredible, and Sarah planned the whole thing perfectly! I highly recommend applying for the course in 2027!
