Don't bother
Terrible. Made way too many mistakes, never followed the textbook, unfair grader on tests/quizzes, and very unapproachable for help. This class will stress you out more than it ever should because she is SO UNCLEAR, scatterbrained, and most of the material covered during class is irrelevant or different than what is on the actual test. FORGET IT.
Awkward and quiet. Didn't seem to want to be there...no enthusiasm. To her credit, she frequently asked if people didn't understand, and she frequently invited us to her office hours. I think she's helpful if you put forth the effort. The class really isn't very difficult, either. But she's definitely awkward and often boring.
Don't take her unless you want to die. Horrible teacher, absolutely horrible. Mistakes all the time, unclear lectures. All around bad. Don't bother.
Not good at explaining; overcomplicates. Not excited about subject.
This class is so frustrating. Sarah Powers is the WORST TEACHER i have ever had. I'm not kidding. At all. That class just always puts me in a bad mood. All she does is read examples out of the book....FOR THE ENTIRE CLASS PERIOD!!! Do not take her class! I would immediately drop it if it wasn't required for my major. Save yourself the frustration.
Terrible teacher. No enthusiam. She seems like she doesn't even want to be there. This seems to wear off on the class. Just reads examples and cannot explain the details well. Would recommend a different professor if possible
very boring, but if you need an easy A and your decent at math then take this class. If your going into this class to learn anything new DO NOT take it.
I agree with the person below. I just took this class b/c I am required to have a random math class for my major... If I wasn't good at math, I would definitely be confused! But all tests are multiple choice so if you do the hw, or at least pay attention, you know what to do
She was seriously so bad. I have never had a teacher so bad in my entire life. I urge you all to stay away. I mean that with sincerity. I did not learn anything. The entire class just couldn't handle her. She is boaring and very mono tone. She doesn't help any students. Worst teacher at Gonzaga hands down.
really boring and hard to understand. i fell asleep every single day. but statistics was simple enough that it was ok. she just reads her notes and copies them on the board. easy, not exciting.
Had her for precalculus. She goes very slowly and uses a lot of examples. You'll be bored to death, but she's very thorough. If you're looking for an easy A, Powers is great.
Math has never been my favorite subject, nor has it ever been my forte. However, this class is pretty easy for me. Some people don't like that she does so many examples, but I find them very helpful. We have quizzes pretty often, but if you do the homework (which is never due), then you will be fine. Tests are pretty much just like the quizzes.
Uses a lot of examples which i find helpful. Tests are multiple choice. She's not a talker but if you need extra help, she's willing to.
uses examples to teach doesn't really teach the concept before using an example but it also helps pretty easy class.... not that bad of a teacher no homework although the homework helps with the frequent quizzes ...
Powers is extremely boring and teaches in a very monotone manner. The class is pretty easy though so if you are bad at math, take her.
Powers is very nice and you don't have to participate at all. She gives lots of examples, and is very boring, but she teaches well. Doing the homework is not necessary.
I personally really like Sarah. I think that she is really entertaining in class and I love all the examples that she does. Also really great that you don't have to do the homework. I barely study and I always do pretty good on the tests and quizzes.
Boring teacher, easy class.
Attendance is necessary, she makes you sign in everyday. She is a boring teacher, doesn't engage the class at all. Rarely asks the class questions and when she does it is painfully awkward. Only take from her if you already know the material. A lot of my classmates struggled and failed.
She introduced Excursions in Math class as 'math appreciation class'. It's a fairly easy class if you take good enough notes and do your homework each night, but she is a painfully awkward teacher in class and rarely engages students. Attendance is mandatory and she makes students sign in. Take this class if you are bad at math! It's not that bad.
Unless you have very strong math skills, do not take a class from this woman. She is inept at explaining concepts, so she assigns a ton of homework so that you can learn it for yourself. She also tries very hard to confuse students with her exam questions. She brings nothing to the table as a teacher.
Her class could literally take ten minutes but she drags it out to 50. She taught us what prime numbers were, this class is completely useless in every way. We wrote a third grade level book report for a third grade level book. Take College Algebra it might actually be useful in your life.
I enjoyed her, she's pretty easy and looks like Velma from Scooby Doo. Quiet and kinda socially awkward but she's nice and gives you an Easy A for doing practically nothing.
Hard class for student's who struggle with math. Her classes consist of her giving example after example. Easy for me because I had already taken calculus in high school.
I think she is great. I am so glad i am in her class. She makes math so much fun! I wish i can take her again!
Took her Excursions class looking to fulfill my required math class and wanting an easy one. The class was totally fine until the end when without any prior warning she decides to grade a few homework problems as a test, then giving a massive and pointless group project during finals week, again with no notice and without it being on the syllabus.
A pretty straightforward class. Three or four tests over the course of the semester plus the final. Homework is optional but if you consistently do it you should be fine on the tests. She's kind of an awkward professor and she laughs at herself a lot but she's friendly and very approachable.
Her class is not the best, but not the worst. If math doesn't come naturally to you, you have to study. She's not the nicest lady in the world, but her review sheets are just like the tests. Quizzes every week so you have to go to class.
not a bad teacher. assigns a lot of homework but you will be fine if you don't do a single assignment. quizzes once a week and she gives a study guide for tests that are pretty much the exact same a the test.
Sarah was super meticulous and went over lectures really slowly, making sure everyone understood. The class seemed a little below college level most of the time. Got a little harder as it went on, but generally not a stressful class. If you're looking to be challenged, this is not the class for you. If you want an A, go for it!
I think she is unfairly being slammed but some people. While she may go over material with a multitude of examples she just wants to ensure everyone in the class is up to speed. Homework is for your own use and is not required to be turned in. I frankly never did any and got a B in the class. Just beware the final is a group word problems!! YUCK
Best math teacher I've ever had. She is so sweet and always willing to help. Her style of teaching can seem boring but it is very effective and not "mathy", with more emphasis on concepts and understanding than steps and boring stuff. I have never been so successful in a math class she is truly awesome.
don't understand how anyone could not like her
Great prof if you are not very good at math. Explanations are clear and not "mathy". As a person she comes across as a bit odd/unapproachable, but as a teacher she is helpful and clear. Definitely take her if you need to get a math requirement out of the way/don't like math very much.
This professor makes what should be a somewhat easy math class, extremely difficult. If you are not good at math, I highly advise not taking her. I did every homework assignment and was in her office hours daily, and still did bad in the class. She didn't seem to care. The tests are MUCH more difficult than the examples in class, and too long.
She is a very good teacher! Displays the material well, but moves very quickly. She is very sweet, but she doesn't want you to waste her time. Only see her if you have something specific in mind. Do well on the tests and the quizzes and you'll get an A! Also you can turn in homework for extra credit!
I was scared to take precalc in college but I seriously lucked out in getting Dr. Powers. She explained concepts well & always gave helpful examples. HW was good practice, but never mandatory. She's also really mellow, which I always appreciated. I definitely recommend her!
Sarah is really nice and she will help you if you need it. However, she is not gracious with extra credit or extra time. She teaches really fast and is not clear. You never have to turn in homework which is nice but overall I would not recommend this teacher.
Didnt learn anything in class. Moves too fast through the material. Take someone else
Professor Powers was a pretty good professor. She explains things in a simple way that's not too "mathy", why I liked as a poly-sci major. Her lectures are boring but not too hard to follow along, and her tests aren't hard if you do the homework. I would recommend her to someone who is looking to learn the basic material, but not to a math major.
Powers is a super clear professor. She teaches you what you need to know and tests you on it. She will always help you. The homework is optional, but your grade will be better if you do it. There are weekly quizes but are very straightforward and the tests are not bad either. She is a good teacher for a hard subject, but I would highly recommend
I really enjoyed having her as my math teacher. She is very clear on explaining and walking us through the hw. Her office hours are very helpful,I was in there every chance I got. She will make you work for an A, and her study guides don't always match up to the tests. The exams are usually alot harder than the study guides.
Powers is a sweet and helpful woman. Ask for help and you will receive. If you are taking her Business Math course- if you took calculus and/or pre-calc in high school you will be good. Homework is optional and the only grades are tests and quizzes. Teaches by example and always answers questions with proof. Take Powers!
Good at explaining concepts in lectures but not very down to earth or willing to help students
Powers is an awesome teacher, I keep signing up for her classes. She writes down detailed notes, makes sure everyone undertands the material before she moves on to the next topic. VERY organized, attendance is important but the assignments she gives are very easy. Tests are moderately hard but with a little bit of effort, easy A.
she was a great teacher! everything she teaches is on the test! i recommend her to everyone!
Super clear and direct explanation of the course material of calculus. If you took AP Calc in high school this will be a breeze. All homework is optional, but she moves through the concepts very quickly so you have the potential to get behind. A sweet and lovely professor who could not be any clearer! Would take again!
Solid teacher for statistics. A little quiet so its hard to hear her sometimes. Only two 35% tests so those two exams basically determine your grade. Overall, a boring class but good prof.
I took Powers for intro to stats, I loved her class and was excited to go even though it was math. I had a background of high school stats but she makes this class so easy by giving a lot of examples of unit packets that review what she wants you to know for the test. Homework is optional but your grade is all tests and quizzes.
Gives a lot of in class examples, but does not explain them well. It appears that she automatically assumes students fully understand and know the material being covered. Does not answer students questions well and avoids them at all costs.
Dr. Powers is a very good professor. Her examples are clear, the homework is optional, the syllabus is followed to a T, she answers all questions you have, etc. She is not super outgoing, don't expect to make a personal relationship with her, but she is very kind and accessible outside of class. You can tell she is well respected in the community.
Powers is a literal gem to this world. She is so caring and sweet. She gives you note packets and in-class review days before tests. Homework is optional. Easiest class I've taken. Four tests and a final. 9 quizzes but they help you study for the tests. Please take her!! She is amazing!1
Power's isn't a bad choice at all. Homework isn't mandatory, but it does help. I think her voice is so soft that it gets hard to pay attention in class. Not the greatest at explaining questions, but not too bad. The class starts with basic algebra and by the end of the semester you're into deep calculus. If you did well/took calc in HS, no problems
I am not sure why this professor is rated so low. Easily one of the best math teachers in the business math department. She is also one of the few that gives a lot of partial credit on test or quizzes, which is important when your only grade is tests and quizzes. Homework is optional but honestly you need to do it if you want to do well.
I enjoyed Ms. Powers. I took calculus in high school, which made her class a lot easier for me. I feel she is very thorough, and a solid choice for a professor.
The usual teachers. No complaints its a standard math class. Can be very helpful in office hours.
Math 103 is good for people who aren't going into math-based majors/careers, you get to learn about finances, statistical analysis, and probabilities. Most of your grade is made of tests and quizzes, as well as some groupwork and hw assignments. Professor Powers is a great teacher and she cares about her students and their success in the course.
I had Mrs. Powers for Math 121 (Intro to Stats) and I think she's a good teacher. She explains things very clearly and she gives you note packets for all lectures which is really nice. The tests are straight forward (basically the note packets) but go to class or you'll be behind. Mrs. Powers is caring but she does talk quietly so sit in front.
Sarah Powers makes math the easiest thing I've ever done. I took intro math and business stats from her and as someone who struggles with math, Powers does a great job making it doable. I've even used her notes at work before. She has a quiz for every chapter, so you'll definitely know it for the test.
Sarah Powers was one of my least favorite teachers. She was super boring and was not the best at teaching the material. There is so much homework that it gets overwhelming and we have a quiz or test every week. I'm normally an A student but I have a very low B for this class
Isn't very helpful, boring lecturer, tries to make tests harder than they need to be.
Sarah Powers is a good Professor, she knew how to teach this course and was giving clear examples. She never tried to pull plot twists on exams and made sure to answer questions or concerns from students. Overall she was a solid teacher.
I had Ms. Powers for intro to stats and thought she was great! Very prepared and super clear. You will know your stuff if you show up and will likely get an A which was great for me because I normally hate math. She will give you every equation you need on the test. My only complaint is she is a bit quiet but she's still approachable.
I had already taken AP calc in high school so this class was especially easy for me since I already knew pretty much all of the material. Her lectures are very straightforward and the homework is optional. I recommend doing the homework only if you need extra practice with those kinds of problems. Weekly quiz every Friday and a few exams.
Professor Powers is a solid choice for a. math class. She explains things well and is available when you need extra help. Homework is optional and class grade consists of quizzes and tests.
I have Powers for Survey of Calculus. Her lectures are impossibly fast and class is 50 minutes of taking notes. She does not care about her students. On the first day she called our class rude and disrespectful for not knowing how to solve an impossible problem. Her class is graded solely on tests and quizzes. Do not recommend!
Dr. Powers is a VERY good teacher, but her 50 min classes were all notes. Your grade depends only on of quizzes and a few exams, nothing else. She will answer your questions if you're confused, but I wish she would slow down a bit during class. Towards the end about anti-derivatives and integrals, everyone got lost, since she did not explain well.
Professor Powers explains math very clearly and it is very easy to follow. She has no problem with answering questions or helping outside of class. Homework is all optional for practice if you need it. There are quizzes every week and 4 exams. The only thing that frustrated me was you have to fight for partial credit when you get a question wrong.
Powers was fine. It was a little difficult to stay engaged during class because of how boring the lectures were, but the material was understandable and the quizzes aligned with the work we were doing. Average.
Dr. Powers is easygoing and by far the most organized professor I have ever taken- her lectures cover exactly what will be on every test/quiz and the entire semester schedule was posted and accurate on day one of the class. The homework is optional, and your entire grade is five tests and ten quizzes. My only complaint is that she moves VERY fast.
Mrs. Powers is incredibly organized. If you take a look at the syllabus every once in a while, you will never be caught off guard. Her lectures teach exactly what you need to know, and she has note packets(with keys!)available for every lecture. If you follow along with lectures and make sure you can do the questions, you will get a good grade.
she really cares about her students! she makes lots of sense and is organized. don't be afraid to ask questions and go to office hours or schedule time with her if you need help. a great choice for non math people.
Class is fast paced, so be ready when class starts, to write as fast as you can. She does a fairly good job of explaining material but sometimes I find myself lost in the HW so I get outside help because I felt like she gets mad when I ask for help. Also beware of quiz days, first half is new material then last 15 minutes for quiz on old material.
Her lectures are incredibly boring and on quiz days, you only have the last 15-25 minutes to finish the quiz. She is very unapproachable, but at least her syllabus and calendar is organized.
Lenient grading on quizzes and if you have questions she will answer them. She does not really teach, just writes all the answers on the board and expects you to catch on. Overall very average prof
A good teacher, show up to lectures and you'll learn everything you need to know for the tests and quizzes. She provides note packets that are very helpful and teach everything and keeps it organized. Homework can be tedious but do it along with the notes and it's not terrible
Professor Powers was average. She writes fast and doesnt take time to engage the class in the math problems. Her quizzes and tests are very straightforward though. She isnt a tough grader and provides study guides for each exam. I would not recommend Prof Powers, but she isnt the worst option. She is also very accessible outside of class.
She is the only math teacher Ive ever had that I actually understood what was going on during class. There are so many resources to study, she is very understanding about being absent, and the tests and quizzes and hw are exactly like the examples she does in class. She is a very fast grader and very organized. The homework is very manageable.
Overall, would recommend. No textbook which is really nice. Explains everything really well but occasionally talks fast so get ready for that. A quiz almost every other class which gets annoying but if you are decently good at math you will be just fine.
Professor Powers is a great math lecturer. She gives lots of example problems in class, and the homework prepares you well for the exams. It's a pretty easy class content wise. The quizzes are about 15 minutes at the end of class, and exams were an entire class period but usually went by faster than that. She's a great professor for this class!
Lectures are really boring because she just hands you a packet and then does the packet for you. Homework is manageable and tests are easy as long as you review the packets.
GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS. Cannot stress that enough. I love Powers, but she goes a bit fast and her voice can put you to sleep. She is ALWAYS willing to help and is lenient on quizzes. If you are struggling go to her early on, if you're not still go to her early on. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS!!
Powers is a good professor that will work with you outside of class and individually if need be. She gives review packets before every exam that really help, and if you stay up on homework then you'll do fine. It's a required class that not many people enjoy taking, and she seems to know that. Of the options for this course- she's the best!
Lectures very fast, so be prepared to keep up. She assigns homework for practice but not for credit so you don't really need the textbook unless you plan on doing the homework every single day which I never did and got an A. She is pretty nice.
Professor Powers is probably the best option to take the Math 114 course, however, she takes notes too fast for the class to sufficiently understand the material. She has four exams and a final exam. She provides recorded class zooms on Blackboard and holds office hours. Study for her tests, they are hard and require lots of brain power!Seriously
Dr. Powers was awful. Taught wayyyyy to fast and her quiz/exam grading was horrendous. Avoid her at all costs, save yourself and GPA
I didn't want to put the actual class I took because I didn't want her to know that it was me, if she sees this. Professor Powers is a fast lecturer and not welcoming at all. If you ask a question, she is very passive aggressive and gets mad when you do it. But that's only if you are able to ask a question. During lecture, forget about it.
So boring, math is boring already, class is a lecture of practice problems for the homework sets and the tests. Fair grader and super available outside class during office hours. Math is boring but Powers made it as easy as possible to understand.
Pretty average professor, she lectures VERY fast so make sure to pay attention and keep up. She does give a lot of extra points on tests if you show work.
I took the night class (6-8:30pm) and I can't imagine how bad a MWF version of this class would be. You have to pay attention the entire time because the material is not returned to or reviewed much(if at all), so focus up because it will be on an exam. Math is boring, she is dry, but hey, I got an A by studying just once a week before the tests.
I had Professor Powers for math100 which I was required to take even though I didn't need the class for my major. Most of the things in this class were things I already knew but if I wouldn't have known everything already I assume that this class would've been too fast-paced. Powers was very accessible to give us help outside of class if we need it
It is very clear what you need to work on when taking the class as she lays everything out well. The study guides she provides are very helpful when studying for exams. Would recommend taking this class.
Dr. Powers was great. Note outlines, test reviews, recorded lectures, and accessible office hours. Dr. Powers sets her students up for success. She was also a relatively quick grader which was nice. HW was out of the book and we had around 5 quizzes, 4 tests, and a final. I would highly recommend her. Very understanding and nice as well.
Very good lecturer and explains things very clearly as well. All classes were recorded and all answers to the test were available from her after the test was graded. Very little group work, and homework was a good amount and was good practice for the tests. Overall a great teacher
Sarah Powers is my least favorite professor I have taken at GU. She is incredibly condescending and makes her students feel very stupid. If you ask a question she will disregard it and give a snarky response. She does not put in your grades at all so you have no idea what grade you have in the class. Avoid her!
Overall, Dr. Powers was a pretty good professor. If math is not your strong suit, take this course. The material is not that bad. She teaches a little fast at times but all of her lectures are recorded and easily accessible if you miss information. She offers a lot of partial credit on exams so it is easy enough to get a decent grade on them.
Professor Powers was pretty good. She was helpful outside of class and was always open to questions. There was a lot of homework and lectures in every class, but she also posted a class recording for every day in case you missed a class. There were a lot of quizzes, but the lowest score was dropped. Overall, not bad.
1 homework section due each week, usually took about 2 hours to complete. Classes are all lecture, I recommend taking notes that you can refer to when doing the homework. Textbook is online, and you can use the back of the book to check answers on all of the homework she assigns. Quizzes aren't super challenging but exams are a little harder.
Probably one of the best math instructors I have ever had. She did a great job explaining the material in a way that I could understand. She was also easy to contact and overall a very pleasant person to work with. I would definitely recommend taking her stats class if you get the chance.
Prof Powers was great at teaching the content, but her Math 104 class was exceptionally easy for a class with so much homework. The homework was often tedious more than helpful, and after a few questions you could get the hang of it. She was mostly kind, though she could also be condescending. Overall great if you want an easy A and nice prof.
She's a good teacher but lectures can get boring, She gives good resources for test prep. Overall a decent choice for lower Div math classes.
HW for every class but manageable. Class is straightforward, she distributes paper packets and then walks through it with the class. It's math so it's not going to have opportunities to be super engaging but she did a good explaining the material and I mostly enjoyed it. Early release ~2 times. Pay attention, do the study guides, and it's easy
Very easy if you took pre-calc in high school or if you pay attention in class. She gives a paper packet and explains the concepts, walks us through a couple, and then has us try some on our own. HW is heavy sometimes so be aware of weeks with lots of problems, problems aren't too bad though. Not outgoing but does a good job teaching.
She is super sweet and is not a hard grader AT ALL. This class is honestly so light and the tests aren't difficult. I would totally take her again. The notes packets are super helpful and her practice exams help you prepare for the tests!
she is a good professor but she teaches a bit slow which can be nice but annoying too. the note packets are super helpful.
There were 3 tests, 3 assignments, 3 group work, a presentation and a presentation or book report, about weekly quizes. Just do the homework and assignments and study. She is nice, strucutre of the class was chill.
Powers is a solid professor. Attendance is vital and if you can't attend class because you are ill she is very understanding and you can join the Zoom. We do note packets every class which is helpful for homework. Quizzes are fine and make sure you study for the exams. Three exams and cumulative final.
Professor Powers is a good teacher who explains concepts well and thoroughly. Tests are a big part of your grade, and there is a lot of homework, but if you study enough you should get a solid grade. (My poor grade was due to me slacking off when studying for tests) Overall, I would recommend taking Stats with her if given the chance.
Attendance is important because each class she goes through a note packet where she clearly explains the concepts you need to know for homework and tests. She gives you all the equations you need to know on the tests as well so you only need to understand when to use them. I was rarely confused in this class as Powers is great at explaining stats.
very clear, no homework, tests aren't bad
Professor Powers is a solid math teacher. The lectures are fast-paced, but the recorded videos and practice problems really help. For study prep, I found Unstuckstudy and the textbook super useful. Overall, a challenging but manageable class.
the way she taught her class reminded me of highschool. not very difficult, just a lot of plugging numbers into equations, and she gives you equation sheets on quizzes and exams.
Powers is an AMAZING professor. She gives note packets for her lectures that are super helpful to study and use on homework. There is kind of a lot of homework but it's doable and graded on completion. She explains things very slowly which makes stats a lot easier to understand.
There are some lectures that are easy to understand that are similar to the homework, but there are some that are no where similar to the homework.
BYE I GOT SCAMMED. That class shouldn't be that difficult. The exams don't match the homework. It's so much busy work. She legit only favors the MALE athletes. I asked for help, and the woman wouldn't even acknowledge me. She doesn't explain well, just shrugs her shoulders when u ask for further explanation. No cheatsheets or formulas provided.
Sarah Powers was not for me. She moves really fast in class, quiet and doesn't explain anything she's doing. She gives you notes packets for you to follow along with which can be helpful but she moves so fast you don't have time to copy down her work. The homework packets are excessively long and are tough to complete in the time she gives you.
Don't take her once a week stats class, Professor Powers is overall a great and kind person, she also does a solid job teaching, but the course being 2.5 hrs sucks. For the 2nd half of the semester, I hoped a car would hit me and cause me to miss class when I walked there, and if I made it, I would play hangman wishing I was the person in the game.
