She's terrible and doesn't explain anything, she reads her PowerPoint to the class, and her quizzestests are not relatable to the class, she doesn't care about her students.
I basically paid for someone to read off of power points which I could do at home. There is either a test or quiz every week and very rare is there extra credit. So if your not good with taking tests and quizzes then you are in big trouble. Also, when you ask a question she tends to make you feel stupid or she is just rude. Don't take her.
Terrible teacher, very unfair when it comes to grading.
Talks A LOT. Uses big words in her lectures that are unnecessary and is great at confusing students. Makes you feel stupid if you have questions (because everyone should know genetics like it's ABC 123). Also if there is ever a valid reason you can't be in class, she will find a way to not accept the homework due for full credit.
This teacher IS a tough grader, but she should be. This is college not high school. Expect to be tested on your intellect. It's tough to many who don't do so well in the science department but if you try, pay attention, and do your homework, you'll do fine.
She really knows what she is talking about and is very passionate about what she teaches. She is definitely a tough grader so you can't just BS the homework (which you get about 1 or 2 packets a week). As long as you study the terms her tests aren't that bad. Class is pretty monotone so drink some coffee before. DON'T MISS CLASS!
Her grading is inconsistent and very randomized. On an 8 point assignment she would give a whole point off for something small and one point of for a whole question. She belittles and make students feel less than. She does not make time for her lab students. She straight up told many students that she does not have time and can not help them.
Class is her reading off a powerpoint. Everything bolded the powerpoint will be on the test. Marks off a lot if you don't come making attendance not an option.
I had her for lab last year. She is extremely tough for lab. We have online pre-lab quizzes where she gives you 5 complex questions (and they are all fill-in) and you only get 10 minutes to do the whole thing. She's a very hard grader. So much work is done for just one credit hour. She's really nice person though!
Got an A in the lecture, got a C in this lab. Does not test knowledge of genetics at all. Learned nothing from her. Goes through lecture way too fast and takes off whole letter grades for formatting issues. Good students get crushed by this course because of unfair grading. Rubrics are useless. Watched her verbally abuse people in class. Good luck.
Runs her lab like a dictator, claims to be "helpful" but her handouts include too much information which is impossible to remember all at once. bc we should all know the maple trees like the back of our hands. She takes off whole grades for spelling mistakes. takes off whole grads for spelling errors on her extremely complex 10 min quizzes
She's a very nice person but she's too tough of a grader. The class is just tests and quizzes. Worksheets past out in class don't count for grades. The tests and quizzes don't match what is gone over in class most of the time.
Powers is one of the toughest teachers Ive ever had to take. Shes rude to most of her students except forthe couple that she decides to favorite. She grades like we have masters and PHDs. DO NOT TAKE HER. I worked my butt off in this class and still got a bad grade. All of my other science classes go from B+ to As so her grade is Way out of line.
I honestly dont understand why Powers is rated so poorly! She is one of the most intelligent professors Ive ever had and has really great lectures and ALWAYS mentions everything that will be on the exams. She also offers extra credit for every exam, even the final! Shes also available outside of class to answer any questions you may have.
Dr. Powers is an incredibly intelligent and caring individual. She does her best to help students learn lab procedures and how to think on their feet. Many people criticize her for being too strict, but she is doing her best to prepare students for the future. She's easy to get to know and is very respectful. Just put in the effort and you're set.
Dr. Powers can seem very intimidating, but I've had her for a few classes and it's clear she cares. She is always open to answering your questions and explains things in different ways to help you understand. She can be a little scary because she is really smart. She grades papers toughly but tests and quizzes are usually very fair.
Dr. Powers can be intimidating but she is super nice. She is always accessible and gives detailed and clear feedback on notebooking and quizzes. Very responsive to emails. She's a tough grader because she gives clear instructions and expects you to put the effort into your work! Lab can be difficult but she gives you everything you need to succeed.
Dr Powers is a extremely smart person, she cares about her students and is always making time to help. I understand that people feel dumb when they ask her a question but its because she is trying to make the student get to the right answer by itself through logic. She is an admirable person and will never be irrespecutful towards anyone.
Online class due to Covid. I also come from a low income house hold and one day our internet was shut off, unfortunately the same day as an exam. I emailed her about it as previous professors have been understanding and helpful. She basically told me too bad and that I get a zero (in a rude way). Over something I had no control over.
1st negative review I have ever written: This was by far the most difficult Professor I have ever had. From the very unclear unfair gradings policies, an IMMENSE amount of weekly work, to the long gruesome difficult labs, I would never recommend this Professor to my worst energy. Treated students as if we had a PhD Doc degree in the field. BEWARE!!
I'd say avoid Dr. Powers, but she was the only prof available. Intelligent, but she speaks only in advanced academic language. Spent easily 5+ hrs a week doing work for a 1-credit hr class and often only 5 point assignments that she grades very harshly. Expect to read/memorize 10+ page lab manuals weekly, on top of usually 1 quiz & 2 assignments.
Dr. Powers was so enjoyable to have as an instructor. I had her in the fall when things were online and she was ALWAYS available for help- Ive never had a teacher respond so fast to help problem solve! While the assignments were tough in my opinion, the criteria was clear and as long as you put effort in youll be golden!
Worst class ever. Run for your life I took it in 2020 and had to withdraw.
Powers is very intelligent. The problem I had with her teaching was that she went SUPER fast and was going through 2-3 chapters a week. If there was an exam or quiz the next day the lecture material from the day before is going to be on there which gives little time to even memorize the material. Most online exams were proctored. Don't take her.
Get ready to spend more time on a 1hr credit class than the rest of your classes COMBINED. Don't waste your time. Run instead
This class is a lot of work so you have to be good about time management. She's a tough grader but the grading rubric is provided and she always leaves comments so you know what you need to improve. I wouldn't say this class is hard, its just a lot of work. Be prepared to work hard.
Dr. Powers is a very intelligent professor and it shows with her lectures. She is a bit tough (picky?) on her grading, but she will provide feedback and is more than happy to meet during office hours (she will even make time to meet if office hours don't work with your schedule). Overall, just study and memorize what she tells you to focus on.
I had Dr. Powers last semester for bio journal club along with genetics lab. She is the most intelligent professor at Lewis. She uses big words & although students can get intimidated by that, she is realistically making you the smartest version of yourself. She is ALWAYS explaining things if you dont understand something. caring, kind,TAKE HER!
Dr. Powers is the absolute worst professor (and maybe human) I have ever encountered in my life. She makes you feel stupid for asking questions and is unhelpful and rude. This is a ONE credit lab and I have more work in this class than all my classes combined. Grades you like you are a pHD candidate even though this is undergrad. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Dr. Powers makes you feel like you are a burden by going to see her during her office hours to ask questions about the class she is teaching while also actively rolling her eyes while you are speaking. She makes me uncomfortable and uneasy having to go to her with questions about the extensive and rigorous assignments she is assigning.
The problem with genetics lab is Sarah is the only professor that teaches it. There is no other option. She is the worst professor I have ever had i would give her a 0 if it was possible. This class is extremely difficult for a one credit hour course. If you have to take genetics lab, pray.
Yeah it's a no for me.
Dr. Powers was ok. She seemed pretty sweet and understanding at first but that changed. She made us feel inferior to her and would make you feel dumb for asking a simple question or for clarification.
Has nothing better to do than assign busy work for a lab weekly, having you spend DAYS on a useless assignment that teaches you nothing just to get 0 points for a grammar mistake. Should've became a real scientist with how seriously she takes her job lol. Woman is power hungry (no pun intended).
Absolutely sadistic. Will have you spend 5 hours on a lab then dock half points for small mistakes. She makes mistakes too, her manual is redundant and her citations are incorrectly done. Not a good instructor. She needs to stick to the lab and stay away from instructing. Have not learned a single thing in her class thus far.
Crazy amount of work for a one credit hour lab, more than lectures and other labs I've taken. She is extremely picky when it comes to grading, whole letter grades off for tiny mistakes. She seemed nice at first, then became very rude and she makes students feel inferior. Avoid this lab if you can, if you have to take it here then good luck.
Very judgmental, assigns way more things a week than all of my other classes combined (I am a science major..) The assignments are a waste of time, she is a hard grader and will dock tons of points if she doesn't like your grammar or flow of logic. 6 weeks in and I have still learned nothing other than to dread her class.
It's very clear at this point that she does not enjoy being an instructor. The most you will gain from her course is your self-confidence being destroyed. I really think she would benefit from counseling and a career change.
The purpose of this lab was to belittle students in order to make the instructor feel superior. This was accomplished by throwing multiple tasks at students at once, constant eye rolling and uncomfortable over the shoulder hovering. The instructor followed their methods correctly, promptly resulting in the instructor's self-inflation to be observed
Has no care for her students. Her attitude and ridiculously hard grading shows her only motive to make her students miserable. So many assignments a week but she does not give any direction on them and then will dock tons of points like we are supposed to read her mind. Too picky for a lab class, does wayyy too much.
She docks you 20% a single assignment for one mistake. She's antisocial and the only time she seems content is when the teachers pets are brown nosing her like there's no tomorrow. If the world was ending and humanity was loaded on a ship, she should be left behind.
Her only goal is to destroy your self confidence. Even if you complete the assignment correctly, she doesn't feel satisfied unless she docks points for something on the rubric, and leaves no feedback pointing out the mistake she is referring to. Missing the whole point of focusing on what really matters to help your students grow. Do better Powers.
A VERY tough grader, but if you can get past that she's awesome. She's so knowledgeable and always willing to help if you have questions. Really enjoyed her lab.
She goes directly against criteria stated in the lab manual sometimes. Tends to assign enough homework for a a 3-credit-hour class. i will work on an assignment for 4 hours and then get a 8/18. It's very frustrating.
She rolls her eyes and insults students with the intention of belittling them, despite the fact that they are there to learn. The favoritism is abundantly clear in the class, good luck passing the class. She Gives 10 hours of HW on a 1 credit hour class, then gives a 40% for one grammatical error. This is an English class, not a genetics class.
The problem with Dr. Powers is that she treats us like a burden and then takes it out on us. She's decent at lecturing but will stare you down if you try to ask her for help during lab. We are students. We are here to learn but she doesn't even give us a chance to grow. She's also cruel towards a few of her students who need accommodations.
Such a spiteful, cold woman. The lab is supposed to be a collaborative learning environment, not a nursery for contemptuous verbal abuse.
This class is my 13th reason.
Someone needs to sequence her DNA to see if she's even human at this point.
Anyone who rated this woman above a 1 is either the teachers pet that was lucky enough to be chosen to be the one student to pass her class, or is Powers herself trying to boost her rating. This class is a joke.
I had this Professor several years ago and still get PTSD from the trauma she caused me.
All the roast ratings aside, she is genuinely a horrible human. You go to her seeking help, and all you will receive is passive aggressive answer that is no help. Seriously, if you can, avoid any class she teaches, you will learn nothing other than what you would learn in an english class due to her only form of grading being based on grammar.
I'm not sure how the school hasn't fired this woman yet, as she has received so many complaints this semester alone. Students have compared the same assignments, and received points off for something that another student got full credit for. Convinced she just rolls a dice as she grades to determine what we get points off for.
Sadly, I have to say I left this class learning nothing. Genetics is such an interesting topic, and I love labs, but Powers ruined every bit of that for me and many others. The only knowledge you will gain is how to use correct verb tense, and will never receive feedback on your actual understanding of the course. Sad.
I think that Dr. Powers is not nearly as bad as some of these reviews make her seem. She provides very in-depth feedback on most assignments. She is a pretty tough grader, but it's probably because she lays her expectations out clearly. Whenever I had questions about why I was missing points, she helped me understand what she wanted.
I know a lot of people don't like Dr. Powers, and I wasn't too fond of her at the beginning of the semester either! She runs a tight ship and expects the best from her students, and I think the people that hold that against her are probably just upset they didn't get an A! The class is A LOT of work but you learn so much if you work for it.
Where do I even begin. Sarah
No amount of words will begin to explain how terrible this "human" is. She needs to be fired because no one learned anything. I hope she reads all of these reviews and understands all her students hate her and she contributed to many people quitting their biology major.
Dr. Powers yes has very difficult grading on the assignments, but she as a person is highly knowledgeable and a great communicator. Her grading just throws off the vibe of the lab but other than the grading and such, Dr. Powers is quite nice and helps to communicate certain topics you may not understand. Dr. Powers is hard but is a genuine person.
I had Dr. Powers for more than one class and I understand why some people don't like her because she is a hard grader. However, I truly think she just wants the best for her students. If you seek her for help she will listen and give good feedback on what to work on. You have to make time for stuff like that if you really want to do well.
Dr. Powers if you are reading this, please stop. I can't do this anymore. I can barely afford to pay my bills because I had to cut so many hours at work to keep up with your course.
Highly disappointed in this course. Prof Powers should be teaching an english course if she feels grammar is more important than learning the material centered around genetics. She will fail you if she does not like how you format your tables, or if you write in the wrong tense, regardless of how flawless your understanding of the course is.
Dr. Powers sets very clear instructions for all assignments. If you follow directions, it is very possible to do well in her class. If you struggle, she is always willing to answer questions in her office hours. You will find that Dr. Powers cares a lot about her students and wants them to improve. Ask questions early on!
Dr. P maliciously uses her position for the purpose of hazing bio students so she can bully them gatekeep a career from them. It's a 1 hr credit class and you do about 4-15 hrs of work every week, she does this so you don't have time for your other classes. She doesn't make any allowances even if you just lost a parent or have a doctor's note.
Sarah. Where do I begin? She has the academic achievement behind her but her lack of any valuable contributions to the field are easily attributed to her horrific and pitiful personality. She has been observed to flirt with male students and this favoritism can be verified when comparing the grades she gives female students and male students.
Dr. Powers is a very intelligent professor and it's impressive how young she is. I understand she is a tough grader but she wants you to do your best and drills it into you the fundamentals you need for the rest of your career. I liked her and the lab was fun. I was intimidated by her at first but you have to put in the effort.
Although I'm done with her, I still think about how horrible she was everyday. Other professors even comment on her, apologizing on her behalf and ensuring us they will not treat us like her... says a lot. Any good review of her is HER boosting her rating. Even if she does not affect a student directly, no one would ever come on here to praise her.
By far the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. Hope she sleeps well at night knowing the horrid impact she's made on so many lives. Personally as a professor I would want a good relationship with my students, but hey thats me and I am content with myself... seems like she's projecting.
lol she said "it's impressive how young she is".... Powers get off of here. Stop it with the fake ratings missy.
She's still salty over her med school rejection and takes it out on us. God really protected humanity when he stopped her from going into the medical field and hurting people.
She's very strict with EVERY SINGLE assignment to an extreme level. I thought Genetics Lab wasn't too bad at first, but the second week in, it was TERRIBLE! This class should never be known as Genetics Lab. Instead, it should be a writing class for a PhD class or something. I would NEVER take this class ever again even if someone paid me $1000 to!
I like to think that I am a very good writer and have received very good grades on all of my writing assignments in the past, but Dr. Powers gets too extreme with her grading for no reason at all. This causes her to give very bad grades. No matter how much work you put into this class, you will never get an A! Just putting that out there.
She grades so difficult and I am not sure why? It is a 1 credit class and she assigns enough work for a 4 credit class. I take 5 other classes and I feel like I barely have any time to focus on her class.
-20% for a grammar error is diabolical. Imagine you spend 3 hours doing lab work, another 3 hours compiling it, and you mess up one word ending you up with a B-. By her standards, her own lab manual is not perfect because she can't even cite properly, so why is she even teaching?
Deducts -20% on assignments that took you hours if you don't follow the lab manual she made-up to a T, which is unreasonable for a 1 credit class. Most bio majors aren't pursuing research for PhD's anyways. Powers is miserable and looks to make things unnecessarily difficult for students. If there's ever another option for an instructor, take them.
Unrealistic expectations for a 1-credit lab. The stress of assignments made material not enjoyable. Grading is picky, feels pointless to try bc she'll find something to take points off for anyway. Lab notebook expectations also very high, even following the rubric closely you will get points taken off. Too many points for tiny mistakes. Frustrating
Everyone complains about this class but it really is not that bad. The class is hard but structured and organized and Dr. Powers is clear about her expectations. She gives you rubrics to help! Dr. Powers is respected and easy to communicate with, but YOU need to reach out for help when YOU are struggling. She will help you! She cares! Honest Review
Kind of insane Dr. Et al. over here has only two first author publications after 20 years in biology but acts like she is the supreme authority of scientific writing and just loves to s*** all over her students lab archives like she can do it any better.
This is by far the worst the worst lab and professor I have ever had to take in my schooling. She is very rude and does not show empathy towards her students struggles outside of class. Regardless if you know the content and show that, she only cares about formatting. Freakishly stringent rules, and any small mistake is marked off.
Dr. Powers, we understand you graduated from UChicago, but please stop projecting your frustration over not teaching there onto us. While you provided a rubric and grading outline, there was no guidance on how to meet those expectations or improve. If most of your class is failing, isn't that more a reflection of your teaching than your students?
This class seriously made me consider switching majors. Insane amount of work for a 1 credit class, takes points off for the smallest things and has multiple assignments going on at the same time. Would take me 6-10 hours to finish one paper only to receive a below average grade on it. She needs to remember were students, not professionals.
Honest review, there is so much work that needs to be put in for 8-10 hrs per week but that's not the worst. The worst is that you are not actually learning when taking this class you're just trying to please her expectations. Highly recommend to find online resources to pass her class for ANY papers and assignments instead of asking for her help
Horrible person and professor. Takes any opportunity to give out grades below a C for any assignment. It can be predicted that she got traumatized with her time at uchicago and decided to do the same to lewis students.
She's beyond intelligent. If she was more flexible and less intimidating she would be the best in the department. Her biggest strength, meticulous perfectionism, is also her biggest weakness as an instructor. She has unrealistic expectations of her students and holds them to the same standards she has of herself but forgets we are only beginners.
A professor who knows what they're doing. Very knowledgeable and tough. Not afraid not fail those who do not put in the effort. If you take her classes be ready to learn boyz!
Not a fair grader and assigns too much work for a one credit hour class.
not my fav class atm, this girl so picky and her assignments are out of 5 points, 1 point off and thats already a B??? idk how bored you can be to notice the smallest things for every single student like wow. haven't heard a single good thing abt her and i thought yall were tweaking till im in your place frl
It's over for you if you take the genetics lab with her. The majority of the class has a C or lower. No matter how much time you spend on it, your grade doesn't reflect your effort. Powers is willing to help and can explain concepts to you, she knows how to teach but treats genetics lab like it's a PhD course.
I would never take a single class with her again!. She's extremely nitpicky and anal about the formatting of her assignments--so much so that she once gave me points off on my lab notebooks for writing something in number form instead of word form. Her expectations are extremely high, and this class is too demanding for a 1 credit hour class.
I truly never knew a professor could be this awful, she expects students to put in 5+ hours outside of her 1 credit lab per week and no matter how much effort you put into a paper you will never get the grade you want unless you fail all your other courses and dedicate your time to hers. We ask questions and she'll make you look dumb and not help.
wanted to take my wheels off and drive so i can maybe not make it to her PhD course - oh sorry i meant genetics lab. she needs to leave this facility ASAP. SAVE THE FUTURE GENERATION :(
i dont think she knows what she wants bc when she grades, everyone gets smth diff that she marks off lol. not funny but like genuinely what's going on and why is she not fired does no one read these from the biology department??
She made getting a good great unachievable. All the interactions and rubrics on assignments were extremely clear but meeting the expectations was somehow impossible. For the amount of work that I put into this class, I should have had a much better grade. The amount of work is also crazy for a 1 credit lab. There should be another teacher available
The focus is solely based on PERFECT formatting rather than actually understanding the material. Even when you fix everything that she made comments on and took points off for, she will find new things to mark down. Extremely nitpicky and 8 hours required to spend on one assignment.... for a ONE hour credit course. WHO HURT YOU POWERS!!!!
If you have the option to NOT take this class - DO IT! More than understanding what's going on in the course, your grade depends on how tables are formatted. Students should not be subject to this professor, all it will do it tank your GPA. Lewis needs to have another section with a different professor or strip powers of this class.
