she is such a good math teacher. Bookman taught my math31L class, and it was a disaster and he made me hate math. but sarah taught so well, she made me love math again! She gives good notes , good explanations. Shes very available when you need help. Def take her class
I love Sarah. She is so much better than other Math32L profs out there. Def take her class. Her notes are amazing, and her tests are decent.
Take her class. Completely understandable, lectures on what you need to know for the homework and the test, and is a very fair grader. Occasionally will miscopy notes on to the board, but the errors are small and she usually catches them. Rarely gives ridiculous homework or test problems. Easily the best math prof. I've had at Duke
She is definitely the best math teacher ive had here. Really nice. Clear notes. Goes into proofs a lot but examples are really helpful. I heard 108 was going to be really hard but she made it seem easier than 107 and 103.
Sarah is the best math teacher I have had at Duke. Beautiful and brilliant, she is a compassionate oasis in a desert of callous, cruel math professors. Sarah is fair and generous when it comes to grading and must honestly love teaching undergrads. Amazing. Take her class.
Sara is the best math teacher I've had at Duke. She's extremely clear and incredibly helpful. Her grading is fair and unlike a lot of teachers she genuinely cares about her students and is always available if you need her. She is also fun and nice to talk to. I would recommend to take math with her.
I have to agree with everyone so far. Sarah is the best math teacher I've had at Duke as well. She relates to students and answers questions carefully and patiently. She never puts students down or tries to make them feel stupid for asking questions. She really makes the material accessible. Great person, incredible teacher.
Sarah is extremely helpful and understandable, she's one of those teachers who truly wants you to do well and give you the best grade that you deserve. You know what to expect and you go into the final well prepared. Being a grad student herself, shes sympathetic to the stresses of Duke student life.
Sarah is an outstanding teacher. She is always very helpful, and it is apparent that she truly cares about each and every one of her students. She is ALWAYS very accessible, and I almost wish I liked Math more so I could have her again--she's great!
Sarah is the best math teacher I have ever had. Definitely take her class if you can. She is always available to answer questions and really wants students to understand the material. For calculus, I used to just memorize formulas without any understanding but after taking Sarah's course, I understand the concepts behind the formulas.
extremely friendly, accessible, personable and sympathetic. patient at explaining concepts, never gets frustrated with people asking the same questions over and over again. really identifies with students. would recommend going to office hours. looks like kate middleton.
Great Teacher! If you're taking math, take it with her. I hate math usually, but sarah made it into a pretty good class. In addition, she is a very fair tester, and goes out of her way to help you. In fact, her tests are harder than the final, which is good, as it prepares you well. Before the tests, she reviews material, and is very accessible
Much easier than other math 41 teachers, eager to help students, really nice. Overall a great class.
She was the best Math teacher I have ever had. She is more than willing to help and she can relate to students really well. She presents the material in a clear and understandable way. I went on to TA for one of her classes.
AMAZING teacher!!!! She is SO NICE and so helpful and really wants you to succeed. The class structure itself is very demanding and challenging, but having her as a teacher makes it so much better.
One of the better professors I have had at Duke in general. Genuinely interested in her students. Really nice and cool
Easy material but tests are extremely hard and she will explain things at the most basic level so you are not fully prepared by the end. It's a lot of outside work even if you attend every lecture.
hard tests but she is VERY approachable and loves to help students.
Her tests are hard, but she is incredibly approachable and wants each of her students to succeed.
So nice, very approachable, and goes out of her way to help students. Tests are difficult, but she's always willing to answer any questions students may have.
Puts an incredible amount of effort into teaching. She even went through old tests made by another professor and told us which problems would be the most helpful to us. Possibly the best math teacher I have had in my entire life in terms of clarity and helpfulness
Sarah Schott is about as good as an audio book for the textbook. Over the course of the semester, we have basically transcribed the textbook into our notes. She provides no context in her instruction, merely looping through definitions, theorems, and the occasional (if we're lucky) example. May god have mercy on anyone who takes her lecture.
She was overall one of the best math teachers I've had. She was always willing to meet with student's after class, and tried to make everything as clear as possible for her students. While the tests were difficult, I felt much better prepared than a lot of the kids in other sections. More, she was a really awesome person to get to know!
Sarah is amazing! She's really good with helping you understand difficult concepts which is vital in a tough class like Math122L. She is a fair grader and gives excellent feedback. She's also really easy-going and enthusiastic. Just great! Probably my best math teacher so far.
Professor Schott covers a lot of material very quickly, but only because the syllabus demands it of her. It is strongly recommended to make individual appointments with her and to go to her office hours to slow the pace down and learn concepts better. The tests are very hard and not many people earn the A's and B's they are used to in high school.
Sarah's a fantastic teacher who will always take the time to meet with you outside of class. The class is terrible (math labs are a terrible invention), but if you need to take it, take it with Sarah!
SARAH SCHOTT IS THE BOMB! SHE IS THE GREATEST PERSON EVER! I say person because Math 122L is actually Hell on earth. I feel bad that Duke's potentially best math teacher has to teach this horrible class. It is so ridiculously hard. You think you know all the material then get a 47 on all the midterms. But Sarah is always willing to help & so smart!
Sarah was one of the best professors I have had at Duke so far. Incredibly approachable, possibly a genius, and willing to meet to discuss any concerns or questions outside of class. I actually found myself liking the "most failed class" at Duke. Even though the tests are probably the hardest out of all the teachers, it is well worth for finals.
Sarah is such a nice professor and is always willing to help. If you do the homeworklabs and understand them, then you will do fine in the class.
The best math professor I've ever had, so nice and makes the material clear in her notes. Tests are hard (its a math class) but she has lots of office hours for you to come by and ask questions. I would only take this course with this professor
Hands down the best professor ever. Made taking Math122 worth it even though I was too naive to use my AP credit to place out of it
Sarah is a phenomenal teacher, thoroughly explaining concepts and giving really good explanations in class. Though this class is definitely tough, Sarah is by far the best teacher to take it with. She is willing to stay after class every day to help, and holds lots of office hours to make sure you understand the concepts to your fullest ability.
Awesome teacher! Explains everything clearly and gives out clear notes. What's on the notes are generally what's on the tests. However, her tests are somewhat hard. There are generally no surprising questions, but the questions could be definitely harder than the homework. Best math prof out there.
Very hard class, easily took up most of my workload. That being said, Sarah was a great teacher and extremely helpful explaining concepts. Lectures move very fast, so take good notes and expect to have to do some re-teaching on your own.
Great professor. The class is tough but if you do all the work study her notes, which are very helpful, you'll be fine. Really easy to access for help. If you're taking 122 take it with her.
Although this was the hardest class I've ever taken, Sarah is a very helpful teacher. If you have to take Calc 2, Sarah is really the only option. Very willing to meet outside of class. I was struggling the entire semester but I went to her often and I think my final grade was more of a reflection of the work she saw me put in.
She's absolutely brilliant. Because of her, I loved linear algebra. She likes to teach, super clear, and stuck with the book, which I really liked. She just expanded and illuminated the book instead of presenting entirely new material, and she was always willing to answer questions. Don't forget to go to class!
An amazing, helpful professor. Class is very tough though, with lots of work!
Sarah is one of if not the best teacher I've ever had. Will personally meet with you to talk about anything in addition to being incredibly talented at what she does. Duke math is impossible and without her extra work I wouldn't have passed. Felt like I gained a teacher, mentor, and friend by having her. Simply amazing.
Absolutely wonderful woman and professor. By far the best math professor I've had here. Can take an extremely difficult concept and explain it in terms you can easily understand. Yeah, her tests may be difficult, but I feel that I've learned so much this semester.
Sarah is by far the best teacher I have had in my career as a student. I've never been particularly great at math or a fan of it, but she was helpful and made the class very doable and actually interesting. She really cares about her students and is absolutely brilliant and willing to help. 100% recommend taking a class with Sarah.
Would definitely recommend taking a math class with Sarah. Lectures are at a good pace and clear. She also has very helpful office hours and will work with you to figure out anything you are struggling with. Extremely nice woman and one of the best professors I have had at Duke. Class itself is somewhat challenging but not too bad with some effort.
Amazing! Class structure & lectures incredibly well thought-out/organized. She is dedicated to helping every student. She recognizes that there are multiple approaches to problems, and tries to get on your page to help you understand. She always answered questions on Piazza & extended office hours. Hard class but she does everything to help
Sarah is an amazing professor! She is so helpful and her lecture notes are amazing. She really cares for her students and try to be as much help as possible. Would definitely recommend taking this class with her.
Sarah is the GOAT. Take her class if you can. Literally a goddess among humans.
One of the best Math professors at Duke. Go to each class, takes notes, and GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS she is super helpful. Do not buy the textbook you can find it online.
She's by far the best of the 122 teachers, and everyone loves her.
objectively and subjectively an extraordinary teacher. SO approachable and helpful on every level. she should win some sort of teaching award honestly
She's an amazing lecturer and makes sure everyone understand the lecture. She's definitely willing to work with you when you need help. She has hours in the help room, holds office hours, stays before and after class, and holds review sessions before tests. Her weekly problem sets were hard, but they prepare you for the midterms and final.
best teach i've had at duke. her class is very challenging, but she provides so many resources and is committing to helping you understand. you really learn a lot with her. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. amazing amazing teacher
Schott is truly an incredible professor. This class is difficult, but Schott is absolutely the best professor to go through it with. She is one of the most dedicated professors ever and is more than willing to always help online, over email, or during office hours. Take this class with Schott, you will not regret it - she is amazing!!!
Sarah is a phenomenal teacher. If you're taking 122 and didn't get her, it would even be worth switching to a section at 6pm if she was teaching it. The intuition she applies during lecture is unparalleled, and you will always leave class with a great grasp on the material. It's a tough course, but hard work and studying will yield good results.
SARAH IS AMAZING. YOU'RE A VERY LUCKY PERSON IF SARAH IS YOUR PROF FOR MATH. She cares so much about her students, so she always goes out of her way to help you. Though a challenging class, Sarah makes it much more bearable. Her lectures are wonderful & easy to understand. She'll go over anything until you can understand it. Srsly, best prof by far
Sarah Schott is the best math teacher I have EVER had! Math is the bane of my existence, but she inspired me to keep working hard at it and was always ready to help one-on-one & explain & reexplain things. She is also just an amazing person who can see the strengths & passions of her students beyond her classroom. Feel blessed to have gotten her!
Math is known to be quite hard at Duke, but Sarah does a fantastic job teaching it. She is very approachable and has office hours at least twice a week. Very helpful lectures and great course structure.
This class is a lot of work. Start early on with the homework problems. If you truly review your notes every night and do the practice problems you should be able to receive at least B. But you know what they say. Math 122L at Duke is complete hell.
Gives awesome lectures that you can interrupt with every question on your mind. Very kind and caring and helpful after/outside of class. The class itself is extremely hard and time-consuming and the tests are NOT easy. That being said, she wants you to succeed and if you put in the time you can!
Great professor. Go to class -- her lectures are incredibly helpful. Make the most of your time by asking Sarah for help with the extra problems or homework. Go to math help room for problem sets. You'll do well if you commit a decent amount of time to this class but you should try your best to stay on top of the work.
Sarah Schott is maybe the best math professor you'll find at Duke. She explains difficult concepts well and makes class welcoming so you'll feel comfortable asking her questions. If she's teaching a class you have to take, try to get in her section, because you really won't regret it.
Professor Schott was fantastic. I felt like I learned a lot in her class and that she cared about her students. I went to her office hours every week for help on the weekly problem set and she clearly explained the problems.
I was told at the beginning of the semester by an upperclassmen that Prof Schott was the best prof in the math dept and I was not disappointed. Her lectures were amazingly clear and she was extremely accessible if you had any questions. She also seemed like she genuinely cared about making the class better through the surveys she sent out.
She's a queen. No doubt about it. Good amount of homework to do, but nothing thats not manageable. Go to office hours, you'll get an easy A.
Great and caring professor whom delivers good lectures! Not too much work and problem sets are very doable. She teaches in a way that is effectively clear and very understandable for some difficult topics. Sometimes hard to reach her by e-mail but gets back to you as soon as she can. She's a gem in the math department!
Sarah is a really kind professor. However, I do not recommend taking this class during summer session if she is teaching. The material is overly applicative for the sake of being applicative, tests/quizzes often don't reflect the homework and there is a LOT of work each day. That being said is very nice and gives students the benefit fo the doubt.
Do not take this class and if you do make sure to do it Pass/Fail. Professor Schott is one of the most obnoxious professors at Duke in terms of making sure the class average is a B. There is no clear textbook and the test is much harder than any of the homework so she pretty much sets you up to do badly. As a person shes nice at least.
Tests are way harder than the assignments on the homework. Schott is ruthless. Avoid if you can.
Outstanding lecturer. Has online videos if you miss a lecture. Mid-terms are curved to B, but 90%+ guarantees A-. PSets are very representative of the difficulty of mid-terms. Provides some additional practice problems (common homework). She's very kind, but the material is very dense.
Sarah is the best professor I have ever had! She is so caring and is obviously passionate about what she teaches. She also goes out of her way to help students, often staying beyond the many office hours she holds every week. That being said, the class itself is brutal. The final was the hardest test I've ever taken in my academic career.
Professor Schott is incredible at explaining material and breaking down challenging problems. Her office hours are fantastic and extremely helpful for the problem set. Most students attend at least 1 a week. She clearly cares about all her students and will work with a student to bring them up to speed.
I absolutely loves Sarah - CHOOSE HER if you have to take Math 112/122 (that means if you can skip it please don't ruin your semester taking this one). Super sweet, caring, and gives way better lecture & way more reasonable test papers than other PhD students!! Also super accessible outside classroom & hosts lot of office hour.
Sarah taught everything in a very clear and straightforward way and cares a lot about her students. She's super accessible outside of class, and was always willing to go over psets and labs during office hours. She is brilliant and made a super challenging class seem manageable.
Absolute QUEEN of the Math department. Calc 2 at Duke is hard, but she makes her psets and exams very fair and is very willing to give help and answer questions both inside and outside of class.
Sarah is the absolute love of my life. Her lectures are amazing, she breaks down challenging concepts really well. She made me enjoy math so much that I considered majoring in it. Attend lectures, work through the labs and problem sets and go to her office hours and this class should be an easy A. Duke is lucky to have such a excellent instructor.
Sarah is my idol. Show up to lecture and go to her office hours and you'll be fine (it's a lot of work but doable). Her tests are the most reasonable and she really cares about her students. Once she helped me for an hour at an extra OH since I missed her weekly ones. Seriously, sell your soul to take calc 2 with her. Cannot praise her enough!!
Do everything in your power to get Sarah for 112/122. The lectures are very clear with tons of examples, and the homework/tests are EXACTLY like the problems she goes over in class. She encourages collaboration with other students, and will happily explain exactly how to do every single problem on every single HW if you ask her to. Top tier prof.
Take her 122 class, seriously. I can't stress how nice and good of a professor she is. 122 is hard but her lectures are so clear and she is always accessible outside of class to help. Go to her office hours religiously and you will understand everything.
Professor Schott was a great professor. She is kind and cares about her students. If you participate and attend office hours you will have a higher chance of doing well in the class. However, the tests and labs are a bit challenging to approach by yourself.
Schott is phenomenal, and I'm even TAing for 112 this spring because I loved her class so much. Tests can be difficult, but there is an extreme curve. Keep up with the workload and do the extra practice problems to do well.
Sarah does a great job of explaining lecture content and putting up a lot of materials to help students succeed. There are plenty of office hours if help is needed. The homework and overall workload is pretty high and the questions on the exams are often much more difficult and time-consuming than other practice questions in the class.
Professor Schott consistently goes the extra mile to help her students, sending out surveys throughout the semester and, get this: actually acting on the feedback. It's not an easy class, but she makes it so much more bearable. If you must take Calculus 2 here, please take it with her! A gem at Duke.
Professor Schott is amazing. She is a genius who explains complex topics like they are the simplest thing in the world. Lectures are not recorded, so missing too many classes can be rough on your grade. This course is a lot of work, but Professor Schott wants you to succeed.
Schott is amazing & made this course's dense material much more bearable. I felt very supported - she hosts numerous OH per wk, both in person & Zoom - where she basically solves the vast majority of the PS questions. Def go to OH a lot! This class will be a grind but if you stay on top of stuff consistently throughout the sem you can get an A.
Great and passionate teacher, she communicates very clearly. The course itself is pretty difficult but Professor Schott is quite accessible via Ed Discussion or office hours, etc.
Tests are difficult, but if you study you should be fine. She's really helpful and kind and it's obvious she cares a lot about each student.
Professor Schott is probably one of the best professors at Duke. She explains the content extremely well, and is always there to answer any of her students' questions, regardless of whatever or whenever. Her tests are fair, but studying for the course is essential. Curves are quite lenient though. Highly recommend FLUNCHing her.
Took 112L over the summer with Sarah - could not recommend more! Class was fast-paced during the summer, with 4 quizzes and the final making up 75% of your final grade. However, Sarah and the TAs were extremely accessible and had office hours almost every day. The material is very challenging but it was definitely worth it to take over the summer.
Prof. Schott is the best professor I have had at Duke (and in my life). She is very clear, makes the content straightforward and easy to understand, the course is so organized, there are youtube videos she posts that are exactly like the lectures, and the tests are not unnecessarily difficult. LOVE YOU
As someone who doesn't always like math, Sarah explains concepts so clearly and will stay after class to help her students. She really wants you to succeed and holds lots of office hours. If you have to take 112, take it with Sarah!!
Sarah is extremely caring and intelligent. Office hours are a must for success on problem sets. The course is challenging and moves at a fast pace, but If you spend time reviewing lecture and attending office hours it becomes much easier to grasp concepts! The exams are tough but you eventually adjust.
Prof. Schott is one of the best math teachers I've ever had; posts all of her lectures and gives individualized feedback on her check-in's. Incredibly accessible outside of class; go to her office hours with questions and you'll be set for the psets and tests. Make sure to keep up with homework and psets; all q's on tests come from there.
Sarah is an extremely kind professor who makes herself accessible both in class and outside of it. There is a discrepancy between the problems done in class and those given in the problem sets (which are graded on accuracy and very difficult), but if you put in the work you really do gain a comprehensive understanding of calculus.
Professor Schott is absolutely amazing! Calculus II at Duke is very difficult, but having Sarah as my professor made the class so much more manageable and enjoyable. Her lectures are clear and she is always available for help outside of office hours. However, office hours are a necessity for completing the problem sets.
Sarah is great! She is very kind, makes herself available to students, and is overall very understanding. If you have to take 112, take it with Sarah! Calc at Duke is hard and 112 is no different (moves fast, lots of material, hard exams) but having a good professor makes it better.
Sarah is an awesome professor
Professor Schott is amazing. This course SUCKS, so avoid at all costs. If you must take calc 2 at Duke, be glad its with Schott!
SARAH IS THE BEST. I am sort of upset I would have to take another math class to have her as a professor again. Her class was pretty hard though, exams were difficult AND a time crunch so beware. Even with this, she is hands-down my favorite professor at Duke so far.
This class is hard asf! It's not Schott's fault at all, Duke just has her teaching way too many things. If you can take 122 instead please do that, it'll be just as hard but you'll get two classes of credit. If you do the optional homework everyday you won't be apart of the 40% test average.
This class is SO hard but Sarah does everything she can to make you succeed. You have to study a lot to do well but Sarah has so many resources to practice, learn, and get help. She is also SO accommodating. LOVE Sarah, hate math122
Sarah is probably the best professor to be teaching this course. She tries her best to make sure everyone is able succeed in the course. Very generous with partial credit in exams which helps out a lot. Every midterm is curved and then the final is curved as well which helps out a lot. If you put in the time for this class you will do well.
This class is going obviously very hard but Sarah is super helpful and genuinely cares about each of her students.
Sarah is the best professor you could have for Calc 122. She is super approachable and does her best to give partial credit on midterms. Midterms and finals are curved and she gives daily (optional) homework and exam practices to ensure everyone is prepared. Attendance is optional - try not to miss, but she uploads her notes on Canvas.
Sarah is the best professor I have ever had at Duke. Calc 2 is hard, but she does her best to make it understandable and is SUUUUUPER accessible outside of class to help explain things to you. She genuinely cares about ALL of her students and wants to do whatever she can to help them succeed! If you need to take Calc 2, take it with Sarah!!!
This is a really hard class. I would avoid it if you can, or at least take it with a lighter work load but it's definitely not her fault. It's just a hard topic. The midterms can be quite difficult with a lot of content you need to know but she gives good partial credit and they are curved heavily. Super scary class though.
While the course content is challenging, Professor Schott makes it much more manageable. She's extremely helpful and accessible, always willing to provide extra support. Using Unstuck study alongside the course materials helped me stay on top of the work. Overall, a tough but rewarding class with a great instructor.
Great lectures, very clear and also willing to answer any questions from students during the lecture. Will leave room for answering questions, helping students 1-on-1 and doing practice questions. Never a shortage of resources to turn to if you need help. Lectures aren't mandatory as she always posts recordings.
Hard class but Prof Schott is super good at explaining concepts in an understandable way. If you do the daily hw and problem sets you will be fine and get a good grade. Prof Schott made Calc 2 very manageable.
One of Duke's harder big classes but she makes the content the best it could possibly be! She's a super sweet person and always available for questions or help. The class expectations are super clear/non-subjective, and there are so many resources to help you succeed. Just a great professor overall!
sarah is such an amazing professor - kind, encourages questions, and clear tests! If you do the daily homework and actually make an effort on the problem sets/labs you will have a good understanding of the content, but it's a pretty difficult class regardless
Sarah Schott is a great professor who genuinely wants her students to succeed. Go to office hours for help if you really need it, but If you keep up with lectures, do all problem sets, complete most daily homework, and practice regularly, you'll improve. It's hard to fail, do what's expected, put in effort, and you'll pass and grow in the class.
Such a great professor - I personally didn't struggle too much with the course but if you do, Sarah makes it so easy to get help - regularly holds office hours before and after lectures and clearly cares so much about her students!
Good teacher with good lectures.
Sarah is an amazing professor! Very kind and knowledgable. To be honest I did struggle at first (failed first exam) but her curve is generous and the material itself is very challenging. The class is fast paced and you CAN NOT fall behind. Trust me, you won't catch up. Go to the help room and you will be okay. If you put in the time, you'll do well
Sarah is an excellent professor and one of the kindest. Tests, however, are extremely difficult unless you are very well prepared. Unless you have significant time to dedicate, class can be very hard.
