Sarah is one of the best statistic professors Ive ever had. She makes her class fun and lets you make connections with people even in an online setting. She makes you work but you will actually learn and understand what you are doing. She is always there to help and gives chances for extra credit often. I highly recommend her class.
I loved Sarah, she was very accessible outside of class and was super caring and genuinely wanted the best for all of her students. There are lectures, homework, and reading from the textbook. It wan be a lot of work, but you can tell she actually wants you to learn and help you out. Don't wait till the last minute to do the work!
Sarah is so cool. She really cares about her students and is always available to help. The class isn't a total breeze but thats because you actually learn, and if you have questions she answers them clearly, thoroughly, and promptly.
Sarah is one of the best teachers I've had. She really cares about her students and makes sure to do all she can to help all of her students! She is very accessible outside of class and is willing to help with anything. There are lectures, activities, readings, and homework. It can be hard sometimes but it's not too bad most of the time.
Sarah is the best professor I have ever had at UP. She is so kind, caring, and funny. She is very accessible outside of class and I would 100% recommend going to her office hours-she wants to help you! If you are taking Stats I hope you can take Sarah Sterner. She is a gem and yes Stats is hard but she will help you through it!!
Please take Sterners stats class!! She is seriously the best math teacher ever. She is very clear with her lectures and she is always available to answer questions. She is so passionate about math and she really wants each and every one of her students to succeed. Shes also super fun to talk to in office hours and has the most adorable dog :)
Sarah is one of the best professors I had this semester. Her genuine care for students and the subject matter she teaches is inspiring. She's always ready to help you understand a concept you're unsure about and makes herself incredibly accessible. If you have the opportunity to take her statistics course I would highly recommend it!
I loved her! There was a lot of work to do for her class but she is always available almost 24/7 to help you with anything! She prepares you really well for tests (we had a total of 3 tests and a final group project/test). Overall, she cares a lot about ALL her students doing well and is very passionate about the class!
There is not enough space to express all the good things about Sarah and her statistics class. Her course was highly relevant and engaging. If you needed extra help outside of usual class time she always made herself available. Despite being a required course outside of my major, Sarah found a way to make the class applicable for everyone.
This class was soooo time consuming!! Tests were over 8 hours long given to do over the weekend! Lectures were often over an hour long each video and you had to watch 6 videos each week. She never graded an assignment until the test. Expected us to come to office hours to be taught rather than teaching in class. Marked us down for showing work.
Sarah was a super nice, however I did not enjoy her class what so ever. We were expected to watch hours of lecture videos outside of class and in class do a 30 minute activity. We had to TYPE our work on our math tests with the correct symbols and the tests were take home and took everybody 8+ hours. She marked us down for showing our work on tests
Time-consuming and not effective. She would make us watch hour long, if not more, video lectures outside of class. During class time, she would put us in break out room to do "class activities" but I already finished the activities outside of class. Tests always had to be typed, for her convenience, and took 8+ hours to do.
Her lectures are very long and we are expected to watch them on our own time. In class, we're just put in breakout rooms to work on our class activities. She assigns so much useless online homework. Her tests took all day to do!! She seems like a really nice person, but her class is so overwhelming for a level 100 required course.
Sarah is the chillest prof you'll ever have. She makes sure that as long as you put in some effort, you'll get an A in the class. We watched lectures before class and then did group work (you can choose your group). The content was pretty confusing but she makes sure you wont fail. We had 4 exams and 13 group work activities. also, DO NOT cheat.
Sarah truly cares about our success in this class and she guarantees you will get an A if you always come to class and put in as much effort as you can on classwork, notes, and tests. I appreciate her style of recorded lectures and she is always so helpful and available for questions. She is extremely approachable and genuinely shows us care.
I LOVED Professor Sterner. It is clear that she cares abundantly about her students and their success. As long as you make a good effort and show you care about doing your work, Professor Sterner will do everything in her power to make sure you get a good grade. She is always available in office hours and is always willing to answer any questions.
Take Sarah if you can! She's easily the best stats professor here. She genuinely cares about making sure each student gets an A in the class. There are a lot of lectures, but they're easy to follow and super thorough. She makes sure you KNOW the material. Group work is easy and you can choose who you work with. Lots of free points.
Overall I thought this class was pretty good. Sarah is a nice professor who truly cares about her students. If you put in the effort you will pass. I would not take this class again but only in the current online format. I think as an in-person class this would be much better. Although the tests were a bit ridiculous people below were not lying. H
I absolutely adore Sarah. She can be a bit harsh at times but it's because she really cares about each of her students succeeding. The class was a lot of work but she makes sure that each student passes. We had 4 exams and a lot of easy points to improve our grades. Lectures were long and many but very detailed. Take her if you have the chance!
Sarah Sterner is a really great professor. She shows that she cares about her students from day one and wants to share her passion for math with anyone if you're not math-oriented (like me!). The class can get quite tedious with the work outside of class but other than MyStatLab all assignments are useful and relevant.
If you have to take math I 100% recommend taking Sarah. She cares about every single student in her class and wants everyone to succeed. She is always available outside of class and will help you understand the material until you fully understand it no matter how many times she has to tell you. Just do the work and you will have an A.
Sarah is an amazing professor and a great person! It is obvious that she wants her students to succeed and do well in the class. The only outside work for the class is MyStatsLab and watching lecture videos (but sometimes there is class time for them). If you put effort in and just pay attention she guarantees youll get an A. Highly recommend!!!
Sarah is really caring and passionate about math! She does LOTS of review. There are multiple opportunities for extra credit/revision and she drops some low scores. If you turn in your work, show up, and put a decent amount of effort, you'll get an A! Some homework like MyStatsLab was tedious but overall she grades on completion and effort.
Very kind and just wants you to succeed! As long as you show up to class and turn in your work you will do well in her class. Lectures can be a little long but they are very helpful and clear. MTH 161 H
She is a great professor and offers really good feedback on tests and class activities. She truly cares for her students and will make sure that you do good in the class as long as you show up and put in the effort. She gives a lot of extra credit so take advantage of it. Definitely one of my favorite professors.
While this professor is easy and I got an A+, it is not reflective of how much I learned. I know nothing from this course. She assigns lectures outside of class, totally in more time than if done in class. Her exams are done on weekends, leaving no break time. Her Mastering homework takes hours and hours. This 3 credit course is more like 6 hours.
Sarah is definitely more lenient and provides extra credit opportunities, but you absolutely have to put in effort and work as well. She is extremely caring and wants you to do well, so try your best 100% of the time. Very accessible outside of class - office hours are extremely helpful. Enjoyed her class!
Sarah is super caring and clearly wants her students to succeed. But this class has so much work outside of class time. Lecture videos are super long and the tests took like 6hrs each to complete. I spend all my time doing work for this class. You are guaranteed an A if you show effort but that comes at a cost of tons of work. Wouldn't recommend
I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone who doesn't want to watch long YouTube videos every week. Sarah is very nice and gives lots of opportunities to raise your grade but I feel that she didn't really teach the class. Usually, we are in breakout rooms & everyone works on their own. You may find yourself needing extra help to understand concepts
Watch hours of videos outside of class and then in class says she will give you time for group work but most times will talk and review for the entire class making the videos pointless, leaving even more work outside of class. Tests take 8hrs and online hw is a waste of time. Love Sarah as a person just not a fan of the class. A lot of EC though
Professor Sterner is amazing! She is so understanding and really wants us to succeed. She gives us lots of class time to work in groups and is a big fan of collaborative learning. She is extremely accessible and makes it very clear that as long as you try your best and make an effort you will pass. Thank you for a great semester!
Professor Sterner is incredibly caring and truly wants her students to do well. She is receptive to feedback and is super understanding. Her lectures are easy to understand and offers an abundance of extra credit. If you show her you put in effort, she will make sure you get an A.
Sarah is a super sweet teacher who really cares about their students and their grades. She communicates well outside of class, and there is a fair bit of homework, but if you don't save it for the last minute it's manageable.
I have nothing but positive things to say about Professor Sterner, she is very caring about her students and wants to put you in a position to succeed. Since the beginning of the year, she told us that we are like her kids. She is constantly reassuring you that you can do it and offers many extra credit opportunities. Very enjoyable stats class!
I really liked her because she offered lots of extra credit opportunities and she genuinely wanted you to succeed so she had many opportunities to correct a test for more credit and stuff like that. She was a little hard to reach outside of class because she had specific times that she would answer emails. If you try you will get an A for sure.
Sarah was the best professor ever. You definitely have to work for the A but she always encourages you to go to office hours and will walk you through the stats problems. Yes, her class was time-consuming but if you try your best, do the extra credit, and ask for help, you can totally get an A. She's one of the sweetest people ever, TAKE HER CLASS!
Professor Sterner is amazing! She is very straight forward with her expectations and if you put in effort, she won't let you fail. Yes the lectures are long but she explains the material really well and step-by-step so you won't get lost. A lot of people complain about how much work there is but this is a college course, don't expect a handout.
Great professor! She makes a promise to her students that if you put in the effort, you will pass. There were 4 exams and MANY opportunities for extra credit. You would watch the lecture videos before class. Then, you complete worksheets during class with your peers. Also, there is Pearson homework that is due at the end of the semester.
I LOVE SARAH. She works hard to make her students succeed but it is a TWO WAY STREET, YOU HAVE TO WORK HARD TOO. The class was super easy because her exams are basically the classwork with a little pizzaz which the videos help with. Lots of time outside class for vids and hw, but it's super easy if you do most of it early. Go to office hours.
Sarah is a nice and caring professor. Due to the fact that the university requires MyStat lab she assigns it but it becomes too much work in the end. During this past semester her lectures were pre-recorded which took up way too much time and on top of that the class activities were unproductive if you didn't know how to do it. Ask for help if need
Sarah is super sweet and wants her students to do well. But this class is a lot of work. Show effort and get an A but that comes with hours of work every night and 8hr long tests. Outside of class she is super helpful. I wouldn't listen to a lot of the 5/5 reviews bc she asked us to give her good reviews on RMP. There are better profs you can take
Sarah used a flip classroom, but if you watch the 20 minute videos and come to class prepared chances youll be set. Sarah as a person is super caring and has a very strong moral compass. As long as you put in the work youll make an A and shes very easy to communicate with. LOVE her
Super accommodating. She is from the east coast and is pretty straight forward but its just something you have to get used to. She really cares about her students and will do anything to help them succeed
You're graded on effort show up do work and she will probs curve to an A. Grade does not depend entirely on scores but effort She's nice but dont expect to get extensions, doesn't like to answer questions and is passive aggressive So can easily get A but dont bother asking for extensions or flexibility she will say no. Attendance is critical
I honestly liked the flip model class since I just copies the notes and never watched the lectures. We did the class activities in class and if you follow the notes it was easy. If you finished you could leave early. She made sure that we'd do good on the tests by prepping us well. Don't put off the mystatlab!
Awesome teacher! Probably better than all of the other stat teachers here. She cares a lot about her students and will actually do something if you speak up. The only bad thing was the long online lectures, but if you speed it up by 2x speed it helps. You can also skip to the end to find the easy way to calculate it instead of by hand.
i loved prof sterner and i thought that she made stats very manageable to juggle. very hard to fail the class cause she gives a lot of time in class to do class activities and gives a ton of extra credit. as long as you follow the schedule and put in some work its an easy A
Great prof, very helpful and understanding. Just do what you're supposed to do and you'll be good!
Sarah is a kind soul and a blessing to have as a professor, the class load can get a lot if you fall behind so ensure you are always caught up. Sarah used a "flipgrid" style class as the notes are done on videos and a lecture day on Monday. While attendance isn't mandatory I would recommend going to each class.
Sarah is a great professor who wants her students to succeed. At times, she's passive aggressive when answering questions. All the lectures are online, so class time is spent doing homework which really helps when you have questions! Her office hours are very helpful as well. She offers a lot of extra credit and is very adamant about deadlines.
You won't find another teacher that genuinely cares for their students the way that Sarah does. It is VERY difficult to fail this class, in combination with the teaching, flexibility, and extra credit....you would have to purposely want to fail to fail this class.
Sarah is an awesome teacher! I usually struggle understanding topics in math class, but she makes it clear. She also does not hesitate to help when you need it, and does really well at leveling with the student when they don't understand. She is also hilarious and flexible.
Great teacher, gives tons of opportunities for correction of your homework and tests.
Sarah is an amazing teacher, one of the best I've had in a while. Very understanding when you communicate what's going on. She also does flip model classes so we watch videos on our own time and then come to class and actually do class activities, it's a really good method. It saves time and we get help during class. She's also super funny.
Sarah was extremely helpful when I had things come up and couldn't make it to class. She's also really respectful and will help you if you need help. She also makes sure the class understands the assignments and makes sure that you are doing okay. Thank you Sarah.
Professor Sarah was a great professor. Because of the flip model class we have time to actually discuss the worksheets for the week. Tests are understandable and not overwhelming. I would definitely take another one of Sarah's classes not only for the easy to understand teaching style but also the caring nature of Sarah.
Her course has a lot of activities, but they're all group activities. You will need to steadily work on the material. Statistics can be a difficult subject for any student to understand, but she always provided examples for many ways to solve a question and took great care to make sure the students understand every part.
Sarah's teaching style is really adaptable to any learning style you have. Sarah has youtube lecture videos that are easy to follow that have activity sheets with them. As a person who struggles a lot with math, it's really nice when you have a professor that prefers effort through trial and error and is willing to work with you when you communicat
Sarah can teach stats to people that don't like math in a clear way. This class was easy, but only because all the material is taught so clearly that it's difficult to not have success. She offers extra credit and really just wants people to understand statistics and also feel valued and heard. I hope she teaches higher level stats at some point.
She is the best, she truly cares for her students. I was having a bad day and she let me take an EXAM another day. She understands that we are humans and have a lot going on. She is silly and flexible but don't take it for granted she wants you to learn and makes you work for your grade but so she is loving and no reason anyone should fail.
For a math professor, Sarah is alright, but the flipped classroom style was not for me. She gives 4 exams throughout the year including the final which is not cumulative, so its pretty doable! You get a full sheet of notes to use on exams. My biggest complaint is that it's hard to do well in the class without attending office hours.
I loved Sarah's class! She is available for office hours four days a week which I found really helpful. I'm also a slow test taker so I loved how if you did not finish tests on test day you could go to her office hours to finish it. Overall an amazing class and I would highly recommend her to anyone who has to take Math 161.
Sarah is a great professor and just person in general! Hands down I felt lucky to have her as my Statistics teacher and was sad to leave her class at the end of the semester. Statistics was a hard subject to me but she made it understandable and easy. Her lectures are in video forms which I loved since I could take my time and take notes.
Lowest-stress math class ever. Sarah does a flip-model class so you do have to watch some rather long videos in preparation for class, but she's very chill and if you show up as prepared as you can be the class is super simple. She allows notes on tests and often has extra credit.
I am one of those students who despise all forms of math, but Sarah made it so much more clear than any past teachers/professors have. The homework load was pretty light and she teaches how to use the formulas in a really clear way. Even though it's my least favorite subject, I really liked this class. If you have to take stats TAKE SARAH!!
Highly recommend. Sarah is an extremely kind, funny, and understanding professor. The class includes videos, activities, and a few tests. She is great at explaining the material and activities are graded on completion. Definitely the best mathematics professor I've had.
Sarah is very sweet and understanding. Her grading is very generous and it is not difficult to pass the class if you put the effort in. However, the class is a lot of work, and the video notes take hours and don't necessarily leave you feeling confident about a topic. You will probably have to spend hours studying for the tests.
Sarah is my amazing feminist queen, I love her sm. She's very caring and is sympathetic to mental health struggles/accommodation plans. Aside from that, her class is quite easy to pass. She curves all her tests and I believe they were all open note as well. Lots of extra credit as well, even just for things like drawing a pic for her office.
Sarah has been the best math teacher I've ever had. The videos are tedious but if you're confused she'll help you in class. Very loving and compassionate towards students and understand some people just have tough days. Do my stat lab and you'll get a curve, I did like 4 and got on the curve so it's worth the money. The tests are really long.
Sarah is super nice and is passionate about what she does. She builds a great relationship with her students and is super approachable. She loved helping her students succeed and answering questions.
Sarah is such a great person! She has a flip system that allows for lectures to be viewed outside of class and gives time to do homework in class and be able to ask questions. Always willing to answer questions. The videos are sometimes long but x2 is going to be your friend.
She is a very nice and understanding professor. The way she teaches material is very good and the videos were very helpful. I also enjoyed the class activities. She had extra credit opportunities and prepared us very well for exams. I would take this professor for all math classes if I could.
SARAH IS AMAZING! i wish i could have her for all my classes. she makes sure you get an A if you put in the effort. she gives extra credit if you make her art or go to a sports games. you watch lectures at home and do worksheets in class with a group.
- One class activity per week(on avg.) and reviews it with the class after it's due - Watch videos to take notes outside of class that range from 30min-1hr+ - Four exams total - Doing MyStatLab gets you a curve - Drops lowest 4 class activity grades and lowest 4 note check grades - Overall easy class, effort= easy pass
Sarah is an amazing professor overall. Be aware that she does have a flip style class. You will have to watch 2-3 videos every week along with one homework assignment. For exams Sarah allows you to have a fully page of notes front and back AND allows you to listen to music during the exams as well! Overall I highly recommend taking Sarah for stats!
She has that flipped model learning where you watch all the lectures outside of class. She allows up to 2 weeks of missed class (6 classes) before it affects grade. She also drops lowest activity grades which is really nice. Class is super fun and easy, Sarah is a great teacher. Very enthusiastic.
Sarah is a very kind and understanding professor. She is lenient when it comes to grading. Make sure you watch the lecture vids and at least try a little bit.
she the goat
For not being a fan of math, I enjoyed this class. Sarah was always accessible and was there to support you. I would highly recommend taking Sarah she is amazing.
sarah has a very fair and clear grading system. she is almost always accessible outside of class and i would HIGHLY recommend going to her office hours for a therapy sesh and comedy show 2-in-1 special.
Sarah was really great; her exams were easy to prepare for with the worksheets we worked on as preparation. She gives a lot of opportunities to bring up your grade (replacing scores, accepts late submissions, completion grade for assignments). Only thing I would change is her use of mystatlab; it didn't really enhance my learning much.
Sarah is a top 5 all-time teacher/professor I've ever had. Super caring and super knowledgeable.
She can be very energetic but overall she's sweet and makes sure everyone in the class can understand the concepts. Participation is key!
Sarah Sterner is WONDERFUL! I took her class and she made Statistics truly click for me. She has a very mindful approach to her lectures and the work that is assigned and, I felt well prepared for the exams. It is all structured to make sense and it certainly does. Would highly recommend Professor Sterner, she cares and it shows!
She yelled back and fourth with a kid for accidently forgetting to put her phone away while entering class technically before the class even started and the student got sent to the dean. She can be rude and snappy but if she likes you / you behave / stick up to her its chill no late homework for any reason she means well though
Sarah can be a wild card but she is worth it for the grade. She drops the four lowest assignments and they are majority of your grade. She is very lenient with note submission and she lets you bring a cheat sheet to every exam. There are four exams in total and the final is not accumulative. She can be mean sometimes but her lenience is worth it!
She's definitely a little weird, but in a kind of quirky, harmless way—it's tolerable, and honestly, her class is pretty easy overall. She's really nice and supportive. The biggest downside for me was having to buy a $130 calculator just to follow along with the way she teaches. She is also crazy about having a phone in class.
Sarah is such a good teacher and is worth taking. I love her teaching style and it really allows you to truly learn and thrive. She truly just wants you to learn and thrive in her class and wants the best for each and every student. As long as you put in the work, you will be successful in her class.
Sarah Sterner is an amazing teacher for math. She makes sure you understand the content and allows for extra credit on midterms. I took a total of 4-5 exams in total. She is strict, but in a way that is needed for the class to function. She has a funny side to her aside from teaching and is just a good professor overall. I 100% recommend her!
This will be one of the best statistic professor that you'll take while you're here at the University of Portland. she's caring, you'll have some struggles during the time frame in this class but you'll enjoy it more along the way. she's a respectable, funny, and caring professor one of the best that their is.
I have always struggled with math, but this class helped me finally understand a lot of things
Be aware, Sarah is a direct communicator, so if you cannot handle confrontation she might not be for you and electronics are not allowed during class. She seems scary but she's really a sweetheart who cares about you. She gives you guided notes and one class a week is usually dedicated to homework. Her tests are manageable if you pay attention.
At first when I read the syllabus I was scared to take the class because it said there was no reason at all for you to get an excuse to turn in your homework late. She explained in class its because she usually gives you a class day to work on the homework so you can ask questions and work with your peers. She is super kind and direct.
Don't get me wrong, I was a little intimidated walking into class, but quickly warmed up. Sarah laid ground rules from day one, which made the rest of the semester fun. Although she "does not allow late homework", some of the time she grades it late and lets you turn it in still, but at the end of the semester she drops your 3 lowest. Go to class!
At first, i was nervous to take this class due to her straight-forward manner. However, her lecturing and test styles made this math course the easiest one i've ever taken. Additionally, she drops 4 of the homework's, and offers extra credit. Ensure you get to know Sarah, she is kind and genuinely cares about you as a person beyond the class alone.
