25% 1 Midterm:49 multiple choice question in 50 minutes, so average was 69! I would not take her at all. I regret it. The class is easy , but she makes it hard. About 5% extra credit, 25% quizzes and participation. 50% final.
It was Professor Stockwell's first quarter teaching at UCSD. She mumbles when she speaks sometimes and the language of her first midterm was confusing. Lectures are packed with so much information its hard to study. There are clicker quizzes at the beginning of every lecture and participation clickers that are slightly easier and saved my grade.
Not a bad prof. Clear lectures, explains really well. expect reading every night. She makes us read articles and watch supplementary videos+txtbk that r mandatory bc the clicker quizes before every lecture. Tricky exams but class curved. easy extra credit available so dont skip any of them. Overall, a bit more work then other profs but u learn alot
I loved Stockwell. The reading required for the class isn't essential but helps you answer I clickers in class. You should reference the book if you do not understand a concept but she's really just a typical professor (by that I mean memorize slides). She talked about concepts clearly. Her tests are tricky, but she curves. Final was easy!
For this class you had to put in so much effort to read and prepare for her ridiculous in class quizzes. Disscussion sections are mandatory and there are a few homework assignments and extra credits.I had an A on her midterm and did poorly on the final...I wish I was smarter and took a different professor.
Professor Stockwell is, by far, one of the best professors I've had here at UCSD. Her clicker questions and exams can understandably be confusing to some people, but as long as you don't overthink things, you'll be fine! She STRONGLY advises students to study for the midterm and final from her learning objectives. Her extra credit is worth a lot!
She's kind of funny, a kind of humor that's both adorable and applicable to the lecture. Huge lecture classes, but teaches very clearly and concisely. Her tests, however, are the exact opposite. Beware of the tests. Beware of clicker points. Beware of the evil TA's.
Amazing professor, very funny and easy to understand. Pay attention and read the materials and you will do well.
Awesome professor and absolutely great lectures. You also need to work hard for this course.
Here is the best sum: SHE IS a great professor, which is why the lectures are mandatory, because she really goes over what IS important to know and helps clear up concepts. There is a lot of reading, BUT it's not an overwhelming amount. It's only textbook sections and it's generally very easy. If you read, you don't really need to study for tests.
Professor Stockwell is by far one of the best biology professors that I have ever had in my life. She is enthusiatic, intelligent, and a great instructor. Beware of the clicker quizzes, read the sections of the assigned chapters to do well on them. The midterm was easy and the final was okay. Pay attention during lecture to prepare for the exams.
Professor Stockwell is an amazing biology professor. She is a very intelligent person who makes learning biology fun! Clicker questions can be tough. Midterms and finals are manageable if you go to class and fill out the learning objectives, as she bases her exams off of these.
Professor Stockwell is a good professor. Her lectures are clear, except for her Clicker quizzes, I found her questions to be very confusing at times. As long as you read, go to lecture, and go over the learning objectives before exams, the class should be an easy A.
Very nice professor. The clicker quizzes in the beginning of each lecture are difficult because it asks on specific details. Tests were fair, you really need to know your stuff. My TA, Jess, was also very helpful in trying to break down the curriculum to us in discussion. THE LEARNING OBJECTIVES ARE EVERYTHING, DO NOT PUT THEM OFF.
Inspirational and hilarious sometimes. Passionate about climate change and biodiversity. Heavy reading before class and tough quizzes at the beginning of each lecture (but no worries if you lose puts in clicker questions). Useful extra credits and learning objectives. Good scores in exams very important and final harder than midterm.
Prof. Stockwell really made learning about evolution and ecology pretty interesting, especially when connecting it to current events. Has clicker questions in the beginning of class, some of which are similar to her test questions, which requires reading the textbook to answer. Discussion sections are mandatory! Tests cover mainly lecture material.
Prof Stockwell was such an amazing professor. She is so passionate about evolutionary biology and her lectures are interesting! She lets you ask questions in lecture and is accessible outside of class and will go out of her way to make sure you understand the material. As long as you pay attention to lecture and/or read you'll be fine!
This is a fun and interesting course and Prof Stockwell makes it an even better experience. Completing reading assignments on time is important and attendance of lectures is necessary, but it is fairly easy to get an A.
When I took Professor Stockwell during her first quarter at UCSD, she sometimes mumbled and did not have clear organization of her lecture materials which made it hard to follow and study. Clicker quizzes at beginning of every class are important and very detailed so keep up with the assigned readings. Test questions were straightforward.
She's really good. Her tests are a bit difficult but really fair. loved her
This teacher really knows how to make you feel like youre in high school again - group presentations/assignments/mandatory section. The class is not tough but sitting in on her lectures is so boring and she has clicker questions through out the class so can't leave early. I would choose someone else if I had the option.
Her lectures were clear, engaging, and some times funny. Her passion for the subject really showed through. Very reading heavy and lots of clicker questions, but overall a pretty easy A. Discussions were mandatory and not very helpful though.
Professor Stockwell's passion for ecology shows through in her lectures. Some of the discussion projects can be a little juvenile, but at least she tries to engage students during discussion. She has very interactive lectures that will hold your attention and teach you quite a bit!
I loved Sarah Stockwell's lectures! She's very good at keeping my attention and that's saying a lot! Her tests are hard, because it can get pretty specific regarding the content. Best advice is to do the reading and memorize everything for the midterm and test. Her clicker questions also confused me sometimes, but that might just be me haha
I love bio and I have never had a bio class that I didn't enjoy until now. Her tests and quizzes are designed terribly. There are so many tricks quiz and exam questions it's ridiculous. You get people interested in the field of Bio by making them feel confident not attempting to trick them. TL/DR: Great course, terrible professor. Avoid Stockwell.
You can tell how passionate she is with her lectures! Her tests were on the hard side because it relies on a lot of memory; however, if you keep up with the reading, pay attention to her lectures, and study before her tests, you'll be just fine. Make sure you get the clicker points though! They really help in the end
She's a loving professor! It was my fault that I fell asleep terribly in the lectures, though. TA wasn't even helpful at all. Tests are hard imo, even though I did study like crazy for the final, partly because to me, evolution is not really that interesting. If you wanna succeed, take notes, pay attention to details, memorize slides!
Passionate but goes on tangents. Midterm was alright and straight off the objectives. Final was a lot harder. TON OF MEMORIZATION + Reading . 2nd half of the quarter was rushed bc she did not split up the material evenly. Spent weeks just on Darwin's voyage and that was like on no tests and then stuff we spend 1 lecture on was. Section mandatory
While being highly knowledgable and easily approachable, Prof. Stockwell runs her class in a less easy-going way. Your grade is based on your performance on the midterm alongside a much more difficult final (DO NOT cram to study for the learning objectives!) and clicker quizzes which force you to be on your toes with hw and lectures. DO NOT SLACK!
Professor Stockwell is passionate, approachable, and caring but she's unnecessarily strict about certain things. Discussions are mandatory and the tests are difficult for no reason. This is not difficult material but she structures the class and tests to make them harder than they have to be. Prepare to study a lot and beware of trick questions!
Stockwell is a great lecturer! One of the downsides is that you have to read and she'll ask clicker questions based on previous readings. I believe that her exams are mostly based on lectures but doing the readings is necessary to get the clicker questions right. Learning objectives are really helpful!
Clickers in every class but I never read and only attended lectures and will probably get a A- or B+ so not too bad. Oh and discussion is mandatory.
Great lecturer. Two clicker questions every lecture on reading and lecture. There is required reading for every lecture and discussion, and if you don't read it'll show on that clicker grade. Tests are literally the learning objectives that she has on TritonEd, so just memorize all those and you'll get an A.
She is very nice and cares her students. There is iclicker questions in the lecture.
This is my 3rd class with Prof Stockwell. Pros: Passionate, genuinely cares about learning, welcomes questions and answers them honestly and well, exams are straight forward. Cons: Point heavy grading (clickers, participation, group work, reading, papers, exams...), tends to speak too fast and mumbles sometimes.
I think Stockwell was a good professor. Even though her tests and the class content itself wasn't too hard, her clicker questions (called quizzes) were tricky and could have been worded better. Discussions were mandatory, but like the class, they were easy. It's a little hard to stay awake during lectures, but overall she lectures well.
Very tough teacher. Exams are not straight forward. The material is interesting and fun, but she makes it hard and tricky for some reason.
She is so nice and takes the time to answer questions in lecture very clearly. There is a reading after every lecture, followed by clicker questions, but it all really helps when midterms come around. I've learned a lot in her class and it is very enjoyable .
Overall, Stockwell was a good professor. She has readings for every lecture as well as lecture and reading review clicker questions, so her lectures are mandatory. She explains the material well and keeps you engaged during lecture, but her exams are difficult. She likes to trick students on her tests and clicker questions.
I am sorry Professor Stockwell was the only professor out of my whole school career I genuinely wasn't that fond of. By explicitly telling the class that WE messed up in studying for the Midterm and blaming us for such a low average is unprofessional. EXTREMELY nit-picky clickers as well as the amount of reading equal to an upper-division course.
She's a passionate professor and explains well even though her lectures get super dry sometimes. She posts her lecture slides online. She assigns readings for every lecture that annoying for the clicker questions. Her tests are out of the learning objectives but she makes them much harder and overcomplicated. She's a solid choice overall
Iclickers and really book heavy with daily reading quizzes at the beginning of class. She does podcast which is great, and she's a great lecturer. She explains topics well and would recommend 100%. She has alot of hw tho.
She makes lectures interesting and explains well, taking time to answer questions. Very approachable and nice. She makes section mandatory and its pretty pointless. The readings help with course material and clickers, but they can get very lengthy and boring. If you want to do well on the midterm and final you need to do the learning objectives
she is a genuinely nice person & is clearly passionate about what she teaches. I also found her lectures to be interesting. However, I struggled. I wouldn't say the content was the issue, but rather the way she worded questions on tests and the very specific info she'd test us on. I also don't like how she utilized discussion. It had pointless hw.
Great professor who cares a lot about what the students take from the class. Wants students to understand bio and explains things well. Tests are pretty tricky. Clicker quizzes at the beginning of each class. Not a lot of work outside of class besides studying for tests. Discussion sections mandatory and helpful.
Shes a great lecturer and she knows how to make the material fun. But her midterms are based on concepts, not memorization. The tests are significantly harder. Discussions are required. Iclickers are needed too.
Tricky clicker questions, but nice prof.
Stockwell is passionate about her work and an amazing teacher. She cares so much about the environment and us. Theres clicker questions that are tricky but review the previous lecture and youll be fine. She gives extra credit that really boosts your grade so do it. Her tests are a bit tricky but manageable. She wants you to understand concepts.
Dr. Stockwell gives great lectures. Everything is illustrated clearly. I can tell that she's an enthusiastic instructor. There are tricky questions in exams, but if you stay focused in lectures you'll have no problem. There are clicker performance questions on assigned readings and clicker participation questions in the middle of lecture.
Stockwell is definitely a solid lecturer and is passionate about her class. The material wasn't bad but her clickers can be really tricky. Also, her midterm was really tough. Its MC and Fill in the blank but there were loads of "Select all that apply" that are stressful. The final wasn't bad though if you study the topics she has posted.
Stockwell is a fun and entertaining lecturer. She knows the content really well, is always well-prepared, and is passionate about the material she teaches. Clicker questions are not difficult at all- you just have to think critically- and are really only worth 5% of your grade. Exams are fair and discussion assignments are a breeze.
I found this class very interesting and educational. Professor Stockwell is very passionate about biology and is excellent at explaining the material and communicating significance. Highly recommend!! All readings come from the textbook or are posted on TritonED - required before every lecture as there are clicker questions about the reading at t
Stockwell is very knowledgeable in what she teaches. Class is mandatory because of clicker quizzes, but they will help and prep you for her exams. Don't take her class lightly. It may look easy, but she requires students to have strong knowledge about evolution/ecology. My advice is to do the learning objectives on time and form good study groups.
Professor Stockwell is really knowledgable. Her lectures are amazing. She gives extra credits. And if you go over Learning Objectives carefully before the midterm and final, you should be good.
LOVE Prof Stockwell. Her lectures are engaging, but there's a lot of readings before each one. Make sure to attend class on time b/c of the clicker quizzes. Easy to bounce back; Got a C- on the midterm, but an A on the final and in the class.
Professor Stockwell is fantastic, her examples are clear and her lectures come with visuals which makes studying much easier. She podcasts, but still come to class because there are quizzes beforehand. Her last lecture took everything we learned and spun it into a present-day "save the earth" lecture and it was really powerful
Dr. Stockwell really cares about her students. I went to office hours twice and they were incredibly helpful to prep for the final. You have to read the book for the clicker quizzes during lecture, and you must attend section for credit. Her midterm and final were tough but fair. She curves exams a lot (e.g. my 75% on midterm was an A)
Quizzes everyday at the beginning of class and discussion section is useless. Very few homework assignments and grade is mostly based on midterm and final exam. She's nice but doesn't post lectures until after class, which affects me negatively because I can't see the board from anywhere in class.
Prof Stockwell is amazing, both as a person and lecturer. She assigns a lot of reading but it is necessary to understand the material well and succeed in her class. She is very passionate and inspirational. She cares a lot about her students and is always open to answer any questions or explain confusing concepts one on one. Highly recommend her.
BILD 3 covers so much content that it's hard to keep up, especially with the hours of reading each week. However, Stockwell's lectures are pretty straightforward and if you pay attention and make flashcards for yourself, it's not too hard to get a B+/A- in the class. A lot of extra credit is offered, so I suggest taking advantage of that.
very good lecturer that keeps you engaged and interested. Lots of reading, but all of it connects to what you learn in class and helps boost understanding. Offers lots of easy extra credit and long review sessions before tests. 10/10
Professor Stockwell's class was amazing! She is very passionate about what she teaches and she makes the subject interesting to learn about. As long as you study the learning objectives and review the lecture slides, you should be able to get an A! She also offers a good amount of extra credit. You will want to go to class for clicker questions.
Definitely an enjoyable class with interesting content matter. With hard work and dedication there should be no reason you can't do well in this class. Just make sure you do the learning objectives well and review over them throughout the quarter so the information stays in your head. Overall, highly recommend.
Stockwell made this evolution class more interesting than I thought it could be. She has real passion for evolution and decided to study biology part time, despite she had an amazing job, then she became a prof. In her class you can really feel the her passion. She welcomes every question in class. However, beware some test questions are tricky.
Exams are straight from the Learning Objectives, and if you go to OH she will give you the answers and the scope of the how much you need to know about the Learning Objectives. OH and discussion is helpful. Notecards help!Pay attention in class and reviewing the previous night's homework to get 2/2 on iclickers. Dr. Stockwell is kind and amazing
LOVED Prof. Stockwell. Exams are easy if you attend/watch the lectures and overall BILD3 was so much more interesting that I thought. Shes great and makes things super easy to understand. Highly recommend this class and this profesor
Professor Stockwell is an amazing teacher. You can tell that she loves what she does and that she cares about her students. She wants you to learn. You should be able to get at least a B if you do the HW and understand the learning objectives that she lists every lecture. If you have the chance to take her, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.
She is amazing, the class is interesting and she does want everybody to get an A. She gives a lot of extra credit. Just do the reading and don't procrastinate. The quiz is fairly simple. This should be a easy A class as long as you pay some effort to it
I really like Professor Stockwell, it changes the way I look at biology. It is not just a course but closely related to our daily life. Her lecture is clear and interesting, strongly recommend it.
Stockwell was the sweetest professor and I am so bummed that I didn't get to take her class in person! She does have deadlines for when you need to watch the lectures by, but overall it helps for not getting too behind. Her quizzes are fair, and lectures very easy to follow and very engaging!
Stockwell made every attempt to accommodate students during the pandemic. Appreciate her change in approach and consistency in passion. Asynchronous learning but small assignments due at the beginning of each class that really incentivize doing your work. All material possible to be tested is clear and upfront through provided learning objectives.
Dr. Stockwell is amazing. She really tried to make the class relatable. For example, she would elaborate on how UC schools change the dining system to reduce carbon emission. I was taking her in the covid so the test format is really easy, lecture slides are very clear and a lot of extra credits. 10/10
Do yourself a favor and don't take this class with Dr. Stockwell. She makes you read 50-60 pages of scientific articles each week and you have to write a summary of them before each class and discussion. On top of the 3 papers you have to write each week, there are 5 main papers that you have to write based on the weekly papers/readings.
Professor Stockwell is the most caring and passionate professor I have encountered. She cares about students' psychological health so much that she hands mid-term surveys and see if students feel well about this class. In my class, many students report they feel stressed. So, Professor Stockwell directly cancels a reading assignment for one class.
Professor Stockwell is the most passionate and caring scholar. If you are interested in evolutionary biology and you are willing to put effort, you should take her course. Her course requires you to spend a fair amount of time, but your effort will be paid off! Professor also offers many extra credits. She cares a lot about our psychological health
My best professor Mrs. Stockwell. She is the most accessible and caring professor. You will learn a lot if you pay efforts in her class and you will get a good grade. Listen, you really need to pay efforts. She also offers many extra credit opportunities for us. I enjoy her humorous and enlightening class. I hope you take her class again.
There are a lot of readings but they help with the understanding of course materials. One amazing thing about her is that she can almost immediately get whatever I am trying to express and where I am struggling with even when I myself didn't realize where the problem lies. She explains everything extremely clear. Also, her class is fun! :)
She's super nice and funny. Amazing lectures with lots of jokes and the exams are not very hard as long as you study for them. There were multiple extra credit opportunities.
Prof. Stockwell was the best biology professor I have ever had. She really understands the material and takes time to work through it with the whole class rather than having you figure it out on your own. She was really passionate about her research which was super cool. You will do well on the tests if you use the learning objectives to study
She explains everything well in lectures and she provides overviews of what she goes over in class. She gives a reasonable amount of reading. She chooses not to post the PowerPoint before class because you learn better by writing notes down. She has been one of the best professors I have had so far here at UCSD.
Genuinely one of the best professors I've had before. She's super engaging and really understands the material of the course, and she explains topics clearly. Lots of opportunity for extra credit and the grading is straight-forward. If you've taken AP Environmental Science, you'll ace this class just skimming the readings and taking notes.
I ABSOLUTELY loved having Stockwell! She has been one of my favorite professors at UCSD so far. She is extremely supportive and welcoming to all. You do have to get 65% of all iClicker points to get full credit in that section, so go to lectures (they're actually good anyways). Midterm will make you think, but honestly not tough. TAKE HER CLASS!!!
LOVE her! The best prof I have had so far. It is obvious she deeply cares about the material and students. Explains concepts really clearly and is always open to questions and feedback. The grade is based on pretty much only "quiz 3", the midterm, and the final so make sure to do well on those.
Makes attendance mandatory and she uses clicker questions to mark attendance daily. Lectures are a bit all over the place and exams are heavily done off the textbook reading. Not accommodating for students with COVID.
Prof. Stockwell is clear and efficient lecturing. She is very charismatic and cares for her students.
Stockwell is an amazing lecturer, she's very charismatic and engaging. Also is generous with grading. She uses clicker questions for every lecture so attendance is mandatory but those points along with daily quizzes, extra credit, and discussion credit helped bump out my lower exam scores by so much.
Very lecture heavy and she explains the material very well. Lots of real-life applications. Tests were moderately challenging. Pay attention in class !!! She also requires a clicker!
very engaging professor, i don't find bio interesting but she makes the concepts very understandable. one of the easier classes imo, iclicker points and extra credit brought up my grade and she grades generously. a lot of ppl failed the midterm n she dropped it if it hurt ur grade. hw is super easy but a lot of readings.
A great professor overall, but attendance is mandatory and requires a iClicker.
She is a very caring person that truly wants you to learn the material and do well in her class. However, DO NOT take this class unless you want to read 20+ pages of scientific papers per week. I barely have any time to do my other schoolwork because of the heavy amount of reading. Do not make the same mistake I made when registering for classes.
I thought this class was going to be easy but it is very time consuming. Her tests are confusing as she asks very specific questions. Lectures are fairly boring however, she does seem to care about her students. She is a caring professor but the material itself is difficult to understand at times.
Boring lectures. Lots of reading. Mandatory discussion sections. Papers that are due on the same week that you have to submit three different outlines for God knows how many readings. If you are reading this and deciding on what class to take next quarter, do yourself a favor and stay away from this class. You can thank me later. Pray for my GPA.
Professor was nice but too much homework and reading. Not all of your homework gets graded only a few she decides on. If you do well on essays and homework and not on exams you would barely be skimming it to pass seems like. Would not recommend.
This class is mainly graded on exams if you aren't the best at exams like I am then don't take this class. A lot of homework for very few points. She wants specific answers on the exams. Exams are pretty much over 80% of the grade I believe according to the syllabus. You can't see your grade it is blocked until the very end of the semester.
The most boring, useless class I have ever taken.
Lots of reading that require an outline. A midterm and a final for which she provides NOTHING to study for. The exams are all free-response questions and lots of memorization. Three to four papers that are toughly graded by the IA. If I could go back in time and prevent my past self from taking this class I would.
I enjoyed how the grading was in this course; however, I didn't like how participation based it was. You have to go to every discussion and 65(?)% of lectures. There was homework that made me feel like I was in high school again and the tests didn't really fit with what we were learning in lecture (in my opinion). Make sure to read and participate.
A biology elective should not have been more difficult than an organic chemistry class. I should sue for the mental damage this class caused me throughout this quarter.
Take Professor Stockwell. Absolutely an amazing professor who is caring and very sweet. Lectures quite a bit, clickers are for participation, and required discussions. There are daily readings, so make sure to stay on top of those as you will be tested on it. Offers tons of extracredit for doing easy surveys. less than half of grade is from tests
Amazing professor for BILD 3 she was caring and dropped your midterm if you did bad on it in order to improve your grade. She does assign textbook reading but if you took APES in high school then you should be fine the reading was not difficult and the quizzes for every lecture allow unlimited attempts because her focus is on our understanding.
Was a great professor! Professor Stockwell did make you read from the textbook that she assigned, but honestly, it would be better to use the subheading of the book and search it up on youtube. Overall, very kind and caring professor, and if you get confused you should just search for a quick youtube video like the amoeba sisters.
I still remember a lot of the remarkably clear information that the professor shared and it's been a few years. I'm not even a bio major. Definitely one of the classes that had way more impact than other ones. I think that, if you listen well enough, you don't need the textbook. Pretty compelling and clear content.
I think Professor Stockwell is a great, great human overall. The class is a pinch harder than it needs to be, but I think Professor Stockwell makes it engaging; her lectures never felt like they took up the whole hour--time seemed to fly by. She uses clickers for attendance points, but you are granted full credit if you attend 65% of lectures.
Professor Stockwell is a great professor, if you have a chance definitely take her, she has one midterm and a final. Pay attention to iclicker questions as they were practice for the exams. Objectives help a lot with studying.
Professor Stockwell is a great professor. You can tell she is very passionate about what she teaches. The class itself is pretty easy and there is a ton of extra credit. Just don't get behind on the readings. The only thing that sucked was that discussion was mandatory.
I really loves the way she lectures; she seems to know how to makes her lecture be easily comprehended by students. The class although compacted with a lot of information, her test and the week 3 quiz are easy if you pay attention in class and did some of the reading. I suggest to go over the learning objective as you finished.
I took this class during last fall quarter, and I genuinely love Dr. Stockwell. She is so caring and her class is so easy and full of common sense. She cares for all of her students well beings, especially when it comes to mental health. Barely any homework! This class is mainly memory work for certain scientific eras of Earth. 10/10 professor!
easy class. she's great love her
Substantial amounts of busy work, the material is extremely easy, and attendance is mandatory. The only reason I will not receive an A in this course is because I will be docked nearly 10% for not showing up to class, despite getting A's on every exam and paper. Very easy class overall, but the design of the course is atrocious.
She is an amazing lecturer who actually cares about her students. I would take her for all BILD classes if she taught them. The only downside is that discussion is mandatory and sometimes has extra assignments to go with it. But, it is an easy and fun class with an even better professor.
Engaging and entertaining class. Yes attendance is mandatory but you can miss some times but do not use them up unless you really have to. Main gripe with the class is the textbook that is needed for some study guide questions and pre lecture quizzes. Did not like it due to midterm and final content not really being content from the textbook.
Mrs. Stockwell is a caring, energetic teacher during lectures, so going to the lectures is definitely worth your time. The material covered during the lectures is very interesting and thought provoking, mainly about animals and evolution. This is one of the most interesting classes that I have ever taken, and the readings were interesting as well.
She's a great professor, and the class content is fun. But she takes lecture attendance, and discussion attendance makes up a huge chunk of the grade. If you don't like to go to discussions, don't take her class.
Very good professor, clear in the lecture and what is on the slides IS on the mid term, and final. offers extra credit if you attend OH. only thing is that she kind of moves on quickly and class is very much participation heavy
Great teaching style and kind professor, the only issue is that the class curriculum is a lot harder than it needs to be. Quiz 3 weeks into the class, with 11 questions, then a midterm with 20 questions, and then a CUMULATIVE final with 30 questions. It's very dense, with no notes or nothing. There are professors who make this class easier.
She clearly has a passion for the topics she is teaching, which makes lectures very engaging. Material is easy to understand. Exams test on material covered in lectures and reading. Textbook reading and a 2 question quiz before every lecture. Lectures and discussions are mandatory, but she allows a few free skips. Minimal discussion assignments.
Professor Stockwell is great. She's incredibly helpful and patient with all her students. For this class, it's a lot of homework, usually extensive reading before each lecture. There are also a lot of learning objectives per topic so make sure to write detailed notes. Overall, it's a lot of content but not impossible to get through
Bild 3 is probably one of if not my favorite class I've taken at UCSD so far as a second year. Every single lecture I walked away feeling so fascinated by what was discussed that day. Professor Stockwell is so well-spoken, and especially considerate of all of her students. Nothing she could have done better.
Dr Stockwell is so kind and generous, she clearly cares a lot about her student's success and also the topics covered in class. The class itself is very manageable, and grades are spread over many different things. Needed to take bio for a GE when I'm not a science person, but found this class pretty easy and very interesting. 10/10 recommend!!
You do have to get a textbook, but I got mines online for free (There's reddit links). You do have to read reading every time before class and it's only due before your next class which ig is nice. You also NEED and Clicker it's a pain, but she hands out loaners you jus need to give it to her by the end of the quarter. She' humorous overall!
She is such a fun, engaging, and kind professor. The class is made up of many points from various areas so there are many other ways to compensate for any lost points. I found the midterm and final difficult, but if you study consistently it is manageable. An iClicker is needed for attendance points which was slightly annoying buy not a big deal.
Lots of respect for this professor. She values our well-being and always encourage us to keep going, even though the class can feel overwhelming. It has a lot of material, so you have to do a lot of studying for this class, but it's very doable! The questions on her exams are from her learning objectives, and she doesn't trick us. Love her!!
Lectures were mandatory, but all content covered was very helpful to exams. There were textbook readings for homework, but realistically, you don't need to do all of them. The professor gives so many resources to help with exams, and even if you do bad on one, it is still possible to end with an A.
Really nice professor, lectures were really interesting. Requires a physical iClicker for class participation though, but you get to miss 6 classes without penalty. Be sure to take notes from the study guide + textbook because every test contains questions from there, and the final + midterm are cumulative so just be aware of that. Not bad overall.
The class is made up of many points so if you struggle in some areas it will not destroy your grade. I failed the three exams but still ended with a B in the class. The tests are multiple choice/short answer and are based on understanding concepts, not repeating what was said in the lectures. She is a very kind and fun professor, would recommend.
Super caring prof. Lots of extra credit to help ur grade! iclicker points help, discussion participation and worksheets, her extra cred surveys, pre/post assessments. i didn't do as well as I hoped for on the midterm or final but still got a good grade! I recommend taking her, u can tell she is very passionate for this course.
Many of the topics are interesting and Dr. Stockwell shows true passion in teaching. I won't lie, the class requires a few hours of studying everyday but if you stay on top of it you will be okay (seriously, don't get behind!). She has learning objectives that act like study guides which helped with studying for the midterm and final.
AMAZING PERSON. Would definitely recommend most of the lectures were interesting and useful to what is on the midterm and final. Some topics are skimmed through very quickly so notes are very useful. Overall would recommend this class and professor!
She's very passionate about her subject and her enthusiasm is clear in the way she teaches it. As someone who has not taken a biology course in a while, the material and exams felt like they were at an appropriate level of difficulty. The way she grades and the opportunities for assistance provided make getting a high grade very realistic.
Stockwell uses clickers for attendance but 7 lectures are dropped. There are pre-lecture readings + two-question quiz on the reading. Every lecture she encourages us to check in with our neighbors then invites us to take a deep breath before starting. She is one of the best professors I have had here, the climate change lecture changed my life.
Professor Stockwell makes the material engaging and easy to understand. While attendance is mandatory, the class isn't too difficult if you keep up with the readings. Unstuckstudy was a great study tool alongside the provided resources.
Great professor, make quizlet of learning objectives as she uploads to canvas so you can stay ahead. Easy class, minimal homework. 6 lecture skips, 2 discussion skips.
Great Professor and Class, if you attend lectures, read all of the textbook reading that is assigned, you will get an A. The tests are very representitve of the material she covers in lectures and the readings. The learning objectives she posts were a great way to know what to really study.
Stockwell is by far the best biology teacher I have had on campus! She genuinely takes the time to teach and ensure everyone understands. Attendance by iclicker remotes but a reasonable absent policy and every class had a 2 question quiz due immediately before. Super manageable course load if you pay attention and contactable outside for more q's.
Extremely caring towards students and wants everyone to learn. Class moves quite fast, but if you go and pay attention it's not too bad.
Very caring and organized professor. There are no practice exams but she makes it very clear about what's on the exam. There are minimum reading prior to class. Most contents covered over lecture. Attendance is mandatory and is taken through iclicker. The final is a fair game, not too bad.
genuinely such a sweet teacher, she even draws on the chalkboard for visual demonstration. class is easy content, barely took notes or focused during classes and studies 2 hours before the midterm and got a 95%
I LOVE PROFESSOR STOCKWELL!! BILD 3 is such a fun class, especially if you are passionate about animals and nature. She is very clear about the learning objectives for tests, and the readings are usually fairly short. You will need to buy a physical iClicker for this class (NOT a subscription to the app).
i'd only retake this class because of the grading setup. the midterm and final are heavily weighted, but you can still pass with a decent grade through participation, quizzes, clicker points, and extra credit. the class average on the midterm was 28/40, which says a lot about the teaching quality.
The course material is easy to understand, but there is A LOT of filler homework. Expect to spend at least an hour reading and creating reading journals for every lecture and discussion section. Selective reading journals are randomly and harshly graded. Tests are based on reading take aways and with few concepts stressed in lecture.
AMAZING PROFESSOR!!!! If you have a chance to take her I promise you that you won't regret it. I looked forward to every one of her lectures. Her lectures are engaging and really interesting. She has a sweet motherly soul and she truly cares for her students. Homework is just readings that are needed for her online quizzes due before each lecture.
An actual angel. She is the sweetest human ever. Not only are lectures great, but she is very genuine and cares about every single one of her students. Take her and you will not regret it!!!!!
Much love for Dr. Stockwell. The most genuine and kindest woman ever. Great class, entertaining.
Bro, everyone is kissing up to her, let me tell you. She cannot lecture for the life of her. She yaps so much that she has to skip materials. DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO TEACH. pls take a better prof,. Clickers are required; ONLY REMOTE ONES like. She doesn't give study guides or cheat sheets. very unclear with her lectures and often goes off track.
Slow to answer emails or doesn't reply at all. 4 readings plus accompanying busywork assignments every week, if not more. Multiple papers with several hoops to jump through plus midterm and final. Nice person, but not on top of things
My favorite EBE Prof at UCSD, but the class takes up a lot of time. 50 pages of reading and annotation every week across the lectures and discussion so if you don't enjoy reading or don't want to this might be a difficult class. Highly recommend for anyone who is very interested in evolutionary biology. I also recommend Prof. Stockwell's BILD3.
Most difficult professor yet. Gives you extensive amounts of information and does not utilize ANY of very minute amount of it on the actual exam OR final. For the midterm out of 40!!! Most of the people I talked to scared a 24, and I felt horrible with a 26. Not over exaggerating. Take Latisha if you need to take Bild3!!!
The professor often spends hours explaining a single slide and frequently wanders off-topic, discussing things unrelated to the main learning objectives. As a result, important topics are only briefly covered or skipped altogether.
Her lectures were super helpful and the exams were pretty easy if you studied a little bit.
Dr. Stockwell is a good teacher, and encourages curiosity. HOWEVER she went on too many tangents due to students asking hypothetical questions. Not a huge bother, but yea. Must read the textbook because there are specific questions on the tests. Quizzes with unlimited retakes. Clickers for participation. Exams don't always reflect understanding.
She is an amazing professor, really interesting class and she makes it even better. She doesn't assign a lot of hw honestly and it is an easy class.
Sarah is literally the goat I love her so much! Very caring about each and every student, assigns very little homework (only reading and daily quizzes), and is very entertaining lecturer. Class is mandatory and her teachers assistants are great for the most part. Definitely recommend taking this class!!
She has great lectures. She is very funny while still staying on track.
She's very caring and kind, honestly pretty funny in lecture too. BILD 3 is genuinely a breeze with her, and as long as you're not dozing off in lecture you'll do fine.
Her grading style is the worst. And the T/A she chooses does not know how to teach the material handed to them. She doesn't understand her own lecture half the time, and having to buy a physical clicker for her class, knowing we are broke college students, is not the best. PLS by all means choose another professor.
She's really caring and passionate about the subject. Provides plenty of resources for help and is willing to assist you. However, she does lay out her expectations a little confusingly, and does not provide a clear path to set you up for success for midterms and finals. Discussions are mandatory. Short quizzes due before every class period.
She is highly organized and going to lectures teaches you so insanely much. She is so passionate that she cried during last lecture because of climate change. There's daily Homework but reading isint much. She gives you list of concepts that will be on tests so exams are pretty easy too. Discussions mandatory and useless but oh well.
She's great! She is very carrying, will reach out if she feels like your under a threshold. Personally, I don't like science, but in some cases, the way she teaches does make it understandable and doable. Her quizzes & exams are doable, just a lot of memorization and being to apply the concept.
She's the best professor I've ever had. I always dreaded science and was nervous to take BILD 3, but her class made me genuinely interested and feel like I belonged. She makes sure everyone understands, always invites questions, and offers tons of easy extra credit that really boosts your grade.
Professor Stockwell was a genuine and good professor. Class attendance is mandatory through IClicker in which you are required to buy one, Daily quizzes before each lecture but they are super easy and have infinite attempts. The class overall isn't too hard but does require memorization. Overall I would say it was a interesting class.
Professor Stockwell was a great professor, on the last day of class she gave a fire lecture that lowkey made me tear up. In general shes a great and passionate professor. The class is also very easy, if you took any highschool bio/ APES youll already know most of the content. The hardest part of the class was that there was a lot of memorization.
Dr. Stockwell is genuinely such a kind and genuine person. Attendance is mandatory (physical clicker remote), but you get so much out of these lectures. I'm not a science person by any means, but her lectures are clear and make things easy to understand. There's one quiz in week 3, a midterm, and the final with TONS of extra credit. 100% recommend
She's very passionate about the subject, which shows in her lectures. A lot free points from attendance and daily quizzes with unlimited attempts + EC. You'll need an iClicker for lectures, and you can miss 7 lectures and 2 discussions without penalty. Content isn't hard; it just requires memorization, and if you do daily reading, you'll succeed.
Stockwell is a great professor. The lectures to me were pretty straightforward to understand as long you actually pay attention. But, there are a LOT of topics she tries to fit in only 50 minutes so I suggest reviewing the concept and idea after lecture. There is one quiz, midterm, and final exam but it's fairly easy.
Stockwell is a really chill professor, and the class itself is very simple to understand. The learning objectives are exactly is on the midterm and final, the lectures and textbook are optional imo. The only 2 things are that section just gives you unhelpful busy work and that you have to use a physical Iclicker and attend 70% of classes at least.
Clickers, daily quizzes, daily readings, mandatory discussions, mandatory lectures. There's a lot. It's easy, just a lot.
I loved her class. She is so passionate about what she teaches and I would take her class over and over just to hear the love for the subject in her voice. Grading is straightforward, and she accepts questions during and after class. Just a lot of memorization, so review everyday and stay on top of it and you're set!
