This guy is really boring, but very clear, and posts all of the notes online. You don't need the textbook, but it can be very useful as a reference for additional examples. This guy honestly spends half the class doing examples, so his lectures are really boring, but by the end, whatever point he's trying to get across is really clear.
Hi ok my ok name ok is ok sardar ok hossekni ok ok ok
I'm sure he has a lot of valuable things to say since he is a professor, but those things are lost with his constant and distracting use of the word "OK." Imagine every sentence of a lecture containing at least four OKs per sentence. It's super distracting, and leaves you unable to focus on what he's actually trying to say. Absolutely nightmarish.
Just reiterates the textbook and isn't clear on some of the correct answers, is very boring and can be rude. He says 'Okay' a lot and it breaks focus in the already mind-numbing lectures of Philosophy.
A looooot of ok in a sentence! it is really hard to focus even if you tried to! The prof is really confusing and many times wasnt able to really answer a question! Not helpful.. You only need the book.. You ll be more than fine if you want to skip classes!
He is incredibly clear in his lectures. He is aware of his habitual use of the word okay and appears to be trying to improve on that. He's a pretty nice guy. Those complaining about his use of the word okay are just looking for things to complain about imo
Says "okay" too often, boring lectures thankfully, the course content is super easy because he sounds like he doesn't know what he is talking about Would recommend getting a different prof for this course
MUMBLES TO HIMSELF CONSTANLY WITH AN EXTREMELY THICK ACCENT. GOODLUCK.
Often has different answers than the book. Not confident in his own answers.
Very unclear, mumbles a lot. Explanations are unclear. He sometimes acts like a whiny crybaby. 2/3rds of my class no longer attends his lectures, as reading the book probably benefits more.
Very unclear with his in-class examples, changes the answers as he goes when students argue differently. Overall this class tries explaining a subjective way of thinking into rigid structures and it'll throw a lot of people off, especially if your taking this class as a Telfer student and not a philosophy major or other.
If you can avoid his class, do so at all costs. He's a nice man but he mars so hard compared to other classes. This is not meant to be a difficult class but he makes it extremely exhausting and unenjoyable .
The course is already dry, and Sardar's lectures can begin to feel very long. Go to class because he does examples which will be on the exams. When asked a question in class, he usually doesn't give a straight or clear answer, or multiple. Confusing lectures, but attend anyways because the examples done in class are the ones on the exam.
His lectures are very boring and long but participation is not mandatory. If you study his slides and go to the review classes before exams you will get an A. He takes exam questions write from the homework so if you do the textbook questions you'll get an A+. He's a very fair marker and even if you get an answer wrong he'll give you part marks.
Lectures are extremely dry and he does not answer questions very well. It is not necessary to go to his class as he just goes through slides and posts them online, however he does give an abundance of examples in class and some are on the test. However, if you do plan to go to class, do not talk!!!! He will kick you out
Very boring. He has a thick accent and sometimes forgets what he is saying mid sentence. He basically reads off the slides and also says "Right?" about 3 times each sentence. He is bad at answering questions and just overall makes philosophy ( which is already difficult to grasp) so difficult to learn. Avoid taking if you can. Switch out ASAP
I've had Sadar both semesters this year (1101 and 1103 respectively). I thought this sem he'd be better since it wasn't a mandatory course for most students, but I was wrong. Super boring, thick accent, reads slides word for word (they're written like novels, too). Learn to take notes and you might be fine, if not, yikes. Avoid at all costs.
Prof is a genuinely nice guy; I had to get one of my exams deferred, and he was very accommodating/understanding. Personally I found the class to be AMAZINGLY BORING, but it was also quite easy (which I really appreciate!); do the work and you'll get a great mark. Textbook is a must (and super thin, thank God!)
Terrible. Just terrible. WORST for clarity and engagement. Does not care for his students. Very boring and gives terrible feedback. This class was the worst because of this professor. I do not recommend taking this course with him at all. He doe snot explain or answer any questions and he talks as if talking to himself
The lectures were boring. Prof only uploaded summarised version of his slides for access outside of class. Reads off the slides and goes through them too fast that it's hard to keep up to take notes. If taking this course, take with different professor.
unfair and does not care about his students. his slides are unclear, and they contain spelling errors. his exams are painfully long and he gives you unclear guidelines on what to study.
Prof. Hosseini is a genuinely nice person who needs to learn how to be a better lecturer. Each class consisted of him reading off his slides, most of which were directly copied from the textbook. Grading criteria was not always clear. By the end of the semester, only about 1/4 of the class showed up. A good guy but he has a lot to learn!
This prof is the best prof you will ever have in this university. I always had a great time in class, and was always laughing thanks to Sardar. I love this man, and I will work hard to have him again for business ethics. He always kept the classes interesting. He is fire 10/10 would recommend. If you don't choose Sardar then why are you here?
Might be hard to understand in class sometimes, but he'll explain things until we get it. The tests are easy because he uses the questions we do in class as questions on the tests. Really straighforward. I have a really good mark.
His lectures are so dry and boring. The assigned book is 100% more useful in the course than he is.
Great prof! He's thorough in explanation and takes his time to go over homework questions in class. He also lets students out of class pretty early - usually at the one hour mark. If you do not show up to class and do not do your homework, chances are you won't get a good grade in his class.
Lectures are fairly boring, he mostly reads off his slides which are copied from the book and is a bit awkward interacting with students. You can probably get away with not actually going to class and just reading and taking notes from the textbook, it's the exact same examples and definitions anyway. Easy class.
Bioethics is supposed to be a bird course, but he treats it as a fully fledged philosophy course. He's not a science prof & its his 1st year teaching this so he's not knowledgeable in the actual BioMed aspect. Powerpoints are fully paragraphs, and explanations in lecture unclear (reliant on text). Probably good for actual philosophy, not bioethics.
I really enjoyed him as a prof! He gives many hints for the content of the midterms and finals. He is very willing to meet with students, and he is also very willing to regrade exams if you go see him. Do your readings though since he bases some questions right out of the readings. He is a prof that actually cares about his students which is GREAT!
Solid choice for bioethics, yes his midterms are hard but he gives good lectures and provides good slides. contrary to what others are saying his slides are very clear and contain all the necessary information. One typo here and there isn't a big deal imo
Very caring and understanding towards his students. Teaches a lot of relevant and important material! Make sure to do readings, and avoid skipping classes because he tells you what to expect on midterms and final.
Awesome prof, funny guy. Genuinely cares about students and their success. Review the powerpoints, reading pretty optional. Test questions are clear for the most part.
Great prof
GREAT PROF! If you actually put an effort into learning the material you will leave with a new, useful perspective on ethical issues and a good mark! Slides contain all the info you need, so don't actually need to do the readings. He is very clear in his teaching and puts effort into his work. He is VERY helpful during office hours! RECOMMEND!
While his lectures aren't the most exciting, his slides are clear and he often lets us out early which is very appreciated. Actually doing the exercises in the books can prove to be quite helpful.
All slides are posted online and he basically reads off of them in class, providing very little extra material so if you have a good understanding of philosophy you dont have to go. Go to the classes before the midterms to get the layout and hints to the long answer questions. Dont buy the textbook! Its super expensive and you dont need it!
So uninteresting. Classes feel so much longer than they actually are.
Prof has an absolute god complex. Spends half the lecture demeaning students and telling the class how dumb they are. Spent 10 mins the first lecture saying social science students don't work hard or do as well in school. Don't bother going to class, just read the book and spare your mental health.
Professor Hosseini cares a lot about his students and he wants us to do well. His style of teaching is clear and concise; the hardest concepts I was able to understand with ease. You have to come to class if you are struggling with the material, especially the classes where we do practice questions! He tries to make the class entertaining! bestprof
He just reads off the slides and has a very monotone voice. Very boring. None of the readings were on the tests or exams. It is helpful to come to class because he focuses on the stuff that is on the tests. The exam was difficult and there were some random things on the exam that were barley taught. Beware of MC, that was very difficult on the exam
Hard to understand as well as gives mixed answers so you never know the right answer 100%. Many other students I know are taking PHI classes with other profs and they are not doing anything remote to us. Have even gone to group tutor sessions and the tutors don't even understand what we are doing. Most the class failed our first test not surprised
Has no idea what he talks about literally, his TA's mark extremely hard for some reason. Sucks at explaining basic concepts, university should really stop hiring profs like these.
Best prof I've ever mat, accessible for 1 on 1 discussions in his office, works extra hours to ease the course on you.
This teacher cares about his students. It is only necessary to go to the lectures for Chapters 4 and 5. However, I would recommend attending most of the classes where he takes up homework. Doing the practice questions for this class will almost guarantee you an A. Midterms are based directly off the practice questions.
His lecture is boring and dry while his exams are fair; some of the exam questions are directly from a textbook. All slides are posted on the brightspace for students to review. Basically, reading the book and doing some practices, you will be fine.
Avoid this professor at all costs! You're better off getting the textbook, reading it + doing the exercises and not going to class (the prof will just confuse you more). He is a tough grader, the class average after the test was literally a 45 (also because he taught the material so poorly).
Sardar adequately explains concepts in class, though, the lectures can be dull.
He explained the material well in class. He welcomed questions and made sure that you understand the concept you are asking about before moving on. Phi is not an easy course though so expect the class to be fairly hard. He gave only three tests during the term which I found good. The tests were fair, he was approachable and I would take him again.
An awesome prof, available most of times for feedback, helpful and knowledgeable; recommended...
Prof Sardar wiped away my fears upon next feedback-meeting, easy going and very inspirational....
He is a good prof, kind, does his best to answer questions in and outside class. Wasn't boring for a philosophy class. The reading he assigns is really useful, never skip. The 2000 words essay to write is a little difficult but its a requirement for most philosophy classes.
Good prof! Answers well questions. Adds extra info outside powerpoint.
THE WORST PROF I HAVE EVER COME ACROSS. Rude, no passion, care, or desire for teaching students. He is monotone, dull, and is unclear with his explanations. He gives no guidance whatsoever to make the course any easier for learners who need clarification & additional support.
Disorganized. Takes a while for him to actually start his lectures because he struggles with setting up his Adobe Connect. Unclear grading criteria. Monotone, dull, and does not seem to care about students. Low class average because he cannot teach well. Just read the textbook and do the questions. No feedback either. Take someone else!
most of the class is just watching the lecture and writing essays, there was no exam in this class, but you have to read and write essays all the time. well, his feedback is not very clear.
100% need the textbook. If he's doing the PHI first-year class, it's the whole textbook crammed into his slides. Don't necessarily need to be in the lectures as long as you know what they are talking about in the textbook. Was an easy class though, he is a dry lecturer and it is almost impossible to keep your attention on him but my GPA thanks me
is not very help when you have questions and usually responds by saying that "you are not getting the grades you want because you aren't taking his class seriously." Even when you are and are just not understanding. He also tends to just skip through a lot of his slides which are jam packed with words because he doesn't have enough time.
Literally one of the worst profs at UOttawa. Terrible.
Obviously, because of Covid, this class was online, his lectures were barely watchable because he constantly pauses. In the first lecture we had he constantly was stopping his lecture to yell at people in the chat who were spamming things, but still refused to just disable it. His TA's take off marks for things that are irrelevant.
Professor Hosseini holds lectures on Adobe Connect which is a really irritating platform to use. He has been quite rude to students and his TAs mark very hard and don't prove to be very helpful either. You will lose marks for no particular reason on tests.
Mr. Hosseini is very level-headed and knows what he expects of you. As long as you offer him what he wants, you will have a good grade. The concepts in the course are easy enough to get a grasp of as long as you do the exercises in the textbook.
Didn't go to any lectures and got an A. I had two tests and 2 days before, read the textbook and did the exercises. Everything I needed was in the textbook. I'm not an as* who doesn't go to class and still does well. I just found this course relatively understandable. I don't get good grades that often so I'm sure that others can do just as well.
Umm not too bad. I mean prof Sardar seems nice but doesn't offer much support to his students which is a shame. TAs seem HELLA confused and lost whenever we ask for feedback. Class is not hard if you rely on the book. Here's my advice, if you take this class with Sardar online you should be fine. BUT I suggest a different prof if it's in person :)
These comments are confusing tbh. Anything on the exam was thoroughly covered in lecture. i find him to be quite nice and enthusiastic. yes the slides are loaded but he basically summarizes the text for you. Would love to take a PHI class with him again. I would warn that the TA marks a little tough but thats about it. shes cool tho shoutout shelb
He wastes a lot of time in class and has a ery confusing grading policy and
He was no help when you email for extra help even though he encouraged it. You do not receive graded tests back to see where you went wrong or even an answer key so you could check yourself. He told me his class is comparable to math and I received a 96% in my calc course and a failing grade in this one, choose a different prof!
This was easily the worst class I have taken. It's possible the course content could be conveyed in a way that interests students, but that was not the case. The words "y'know" and "alright" occupy about 35% of his communication, which is desperately frustrating when trying to follow logic and equations. Mandatory? I suggest finding another prof.
Response to emails needs to be improved, answers every question without answering the issue at hand. Does not properly set up accommodations for students with academic accessibility. Does not provide solutions to exercises. I got an A+ by memorizing the book with no help from the professor. Solutions to exercises need to be provided to learn.
I can't believe people complain about him, I've realized that the ones who do, simply just don't work hard and constantly whine. All my other courses were proctored, but you get a whole day to write this exam and ITS OPEN BOOK. If you failed this class, that's 100% on your end of the line, it's not right to blame someone else for your own L.
If you don't go to class, it's hard to get a good grade. If you want extra credit, he doesn't care, you won't get it. Lectures are complicated, he doesnt explain well, always uses very difficult terms. I do not recommend. Sure, he talks about what is going to be in an exam, that doesnt mean he does a good job at it. If you have the chance, don't.
Presents a few slides on the entire concept then spends most of the classes reading off exercises from the textbook and answering them. His assignments are wildly different from whats covered in class, and are usually insanely difficult for no reason. Clearly cares for his students but his exams and assignments are much more difficult than in class
Material covered in midterms and assignments were 10x harder than anything covered in class. Talks extremely slow and does not do a good job of explaining concepts at all.
Prof is really respectful and insightful. Puts a lot of efforts into his examples and ensures that everyone understands the course material. G.O.A.T.
Withdrew solely based on his teaching methods
The class wasn't that bad, but I took Philosophy in high school so I had a background - had I not I would've been much more confused. Prof was pretty nice and answered everyone's questions. There were 2 tests and a final, all open book.
Mr sardar was available most of the time to meet in his office on a very short notice and provided lots of support.
I don't understand all the hate. He truly does his best to help his students understand allowing them to interrupt at any point to ask questions. For some that find this class to be more difficult, repetition of exercise will be the key. That being said any confusion will be covered should u decide to ask him about it. He cares, grade depends on U.
The prof does his best to answer all students and make sure they understand the material. His exams cover what's covered in the lectures.
Nice guy. Lets students interrupt him constantly and tries to answer questions but doesnt really help. Organized course never the less. Speaks fairly slow so concentration is key.
Very bad at explaining things; you are better off just reading the textbook. Luckily, the class is pretty easy, so that's not really an issue.
Sardar Hosseini is a very nice guy, and clearly cares about his students well being. That being said, his lectures can be confusing at times and he often contradicts himself. The textbook explains the concepts more clearly. If you read and complete the practice exercises you are sure to do well in this class.
Seems like he cares about his students a lot. Although the class is really difficult for a so called "bird course". The content is taught way more difficult than it had to be. I wouldn't personally take a course with Prof. Hosseini again.
Sardar is a very caring professor. For example, he took over an hour out of his Saturday night on thanksgiving weekend to answer all of our questions regarding an exam we had the upcoming Tuesday. He does have a monotone voice and tends to over explain things. But if you read the textbook, do the exercises, and make the best of it, you'll do well.
He talks slowly and isn't super captivating so it's hard to stay focused, I wish it was pre-recorded so I could watch the lectures on double speed. Not an interesting class, wouldn't take if it's not mandatory for your program. But he does let you know what's gonna be on the exams so that's nice.
THIS PROF SUCKS he is so bad at explaining and he rushes through the lecture and is terrible at helping students he makes it seem way too easy when its really hard
Overall I find him to be alright I mean he is surely not engaging or creative when lecturing, but by all means, he is not somebody who just reads off the powerpoint slides. He is pretty responsive to students' questions during lectures. So long as you go through his lecture recordings, B is easy to get
Terrible professor. Barely teaches anything and makes assignments extremely difficult and impossible. Avoid at all cost.
Very clear explanations, one of my fav profs of the semester. would recommend!
The worst professor that I have had the displeasure of taking at UOttawa. Very bad at teaching and a terrible grader. He gives us 10% for assignments that we should be getting 80% on.
This professor is not very educated on how to teach in an online setting. There were many difficulties with students unable to attend class because he wouldn't let them into the zoom call. He rarely checked the chat box, so if you take this class prepare to speak up! Very difficult class. Not much help from the prof.
Critical thinking: arguments with basic math equations were not my strong suit to begin with. It took me until the end of the semester to understand that the teacher purposefully says wrong answers in order to give his students a chance to correct him. This is a teaching method that I wish I had understood at the beginning!
Absolutely the worst professor I have ever had. He has no idea how to teach. He constantly blames students for their lack of understanding when in reality he is incapable of teaching. The subject matter is difficult enough as it is, his failure to communicate content effectively makes it worse. Avoid taking his courses if you can.
Everyone on here who took PHI2170 with Hosseini says he's bad but Logic I is just a really difficult course regardless of the prof. I didn't do super well in it because I found it hard but Hosseini was always really nice and wanted his students to do well. He would take the time to explain things that were hard to understand. His marking wasn't bad
I found his lectures more confusing than helpful, so I mostly just stuck to reading the textbook (which has a number of unfortunate typos but is otherwise fine) and doing the exercises in there to prep for tests. The content is challenging inherently, but the prof really wasn't very supportive so that made it harder than it needed to be.
I took the mandatory Philosophy course as a prerequisite to take the rest of the philosophy classes at uOttawa. He was very unclear, sometimes confused himself, and gave incorrect test answers. One student double checked a lecture and the answer he gave was marked as wrong on the exam. Symbolic logic is hard. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. This prof was easily the worst I have ever had. He is unclear and doesn't even understand his own work. The textbook is created by him, so the entire course is based on HIS perspective and thoughts. Ask him a question about something outside of the textbook and he gets stuck. This man has no idea what he's talking about.
The actual course I took with this prof at Trent isn't listed, but absolutely no one should sign up for a course with this prof ever under any circumstances. It is 6 days before the final exam period and we don't know when our exam is beyond "I will make it available soon" via personal email correspondence from one student.
He is a great professor. Sometimes he is very funny. He cares about his students, their studies and well-being. Logic is a hard subject matter. He does his best to make it accessible to students. He is always available either after class or in his office. I would definitely take more courses with him.
He is a caring professor. He takes the time to explain the materials. Logic is a hard subject. So, you should expect that the course is not an easy one. But he makes it much easier. I will definitely recommend him. I have already registered to take PHI2170 with him in the Winter.
Dr. Hosseini, while he is clearly passionate about philosophy, seems very disengaged with an intro course such as this one. The lectures are almost exact regurgitations of the textbook (written by another prof at UOttawa). He contradicts himself several times throughout lectures and can never seem to answer a questions straight on.
This is a tough class and if you cannot handle the material well do not go for him. He does help out and wants students to reach out if they need help. His lectures are not great, just stick to the textbook. philosophy is the bane of my existence.
Dr. Hosseini is a good teacher. His slides are clear and contain lots of exercises. His exams are easy. It is true that he does not provide any answer key, but if you ask him to review your test and give feedback, he is always available.
He works hard and tries his best to convey the content to the students. He also provides the students with the exact format of the exams. If you need extra help, I suggest that you talk to him. He is always available.
I loved this course, really easy content. It was structured like a grade 9 math class, content was new but very easy to understand. He tells you exactly what will be on the exam, and most of the time they were questions from the textbook. If you do the textbook questions, you will succeed. Professor Hosseini was really kind and funny. Good prof.
Dr. Hosseini was very clear about what to expect on the midterms and the final exam. A lot of the questions on the exams were the same, if not similar to the exercises in the textbook. He was good at answering questions during class though sometimes I found him vague. He's passionate about the topic, but he just wasn't for me.
He made this course very easy to pass, and he will tell you clearly what are on the test, but his lecture boring af. I studied by myself like every 2 hours before test and still got a B+, thanks for making the test so easy.
The course itself was pretty rough and a lot of people had a hard time grasping the material, but as a prof he was really good and helpful and you got to know him even though it's a big class
Logic I is a very difficult course. It is formal logic for philosophy students. Dr. S. Hosseini is an engaging teacher; he works hard and is always available. Not only we had discussion groups on zoom but also smaller discussions groups in his office in which we reviewed the materials and excericses done in class.
he was rude to students when they asked for clarification on subjects and would claim it as "this is basic knowledge" as if they've also been teaching philosophy for years. the lectures were fun sometimes but very fast paced and can get confusing fast. he also argued with students a lot when they were trying to understand something.
It was a very good course. Professor Hosseini was a very good teacher. Explained difficult concept and made me understand. He is also very funny, and once he told us a hilarious joke. I recommend him to other students.
Professor Hosseini is enthusiastic. He really cares about his students and their well-beings. However, he rushes a bit. I understand that he has to cover lots of chapters, long chapters on both propositional logic and predicate logic, but I wish the course covered a bit less.
This prof made our lectures very long and doesn't well make the slides, the readings are long and the quizzes are worse. They're either too difficult or not at all as he described. 0/10 would never take course again.
I took moral reasoning with him. He is very knowledgeable and delivers the lecture effectively. He explained difficult concepts very clearly. The midterm exams were easy and fair.
He is extremely rude and blunt. Will not give you the time of day if you have any questions. Extremely boring presentations, and slides PACKED FULL of information. I would not recommend him to even my worst enemy.
His lecture slides are filled with lots of important information, but he delivers it all in a clear and well understandable way. His tests are on main concepts and large articles so if you read and know those you will do fine. He is a fair grader and sticks to his grading criteria completely.
I LOVE THIS PROF he is so nice! I took PHI 1101 as my only elective this winter and he teaches really well. I know a lot of the other students are struggling but as long as you pay attention in class, ask your questions, and do the homework, you'll be completely fine. He does care about the students and he's willing to help if you don't understand.
Dr. Hosseini is overall very knowledgeable and explains material in a super clear way. He tells you exactly what is going to be on the midterm so there's never any surprises but the midterms are pretty content heavy. He's easy to talk to and very nice but I wish he would have given more than just 2 midterms with 30pts worth 30%.
He's a good professor and his slides have all the content on them but there is a lot of information them so you must read them carefully. His tests require a lot of writing so you need to be writing at all the time but his questions are pretty simple and broad. He also gives hints and information before so you will know what is on the test.
Good guy, good class. You'll only need to memorize how logic works and you can do well. Certainly need to do the readings and practice questions to prepare for tests. If you do that you can probably attain an A range grade with relative ease.
Sardar is a great prof! I never did any readings (oops) because he is so clear and straight forward. Like will literally tell you what the exam will ask you. He is more than happy to help outside of class (can be a bit mean lol but its okay). Compared to other bioethics prof, he's a lot more intense but if you go to class you should be good.
This course wasn't terribly difficult to begin with, but the sheer amount of textbook examples this professor used throughout the lectures made the exams quite easy. I paid attention in class, barely did the homework, and did fine. He tends to ramble from time to time, but outside of that his teaching is effective. Easy A if you attend class.
He's an okay prof. He tends to ramble a lot, leading to some very confusing explanations and somehow manages to make illogical statements that are somehow logical. Got high in his class one time and my brain still hurt a bit afterwards. Overall meh class, good for an easy-ish credit.
Prof. Hosseini is an okay prof. However, he rambles A LOT and his lectures are often not clear. His slides are PACKED with information (he literally reads off the slides) so attending class felt so useless and was a HUGE waste of time. Easy mark if you are familiar with philosophy, if not, good luck...
Tough grader, lectures with an insane amount of content, rambling. So-so teaching.
He's a bit of a talker, tends to ramble so classes can quickly become boring. You do not need to go to every class, exam is taken directly from the slides. There are assigned readings, but never read any of them and never found anything on the exam that we didn't talk about in class. He's also pretty good at letting you know what's on the exams/
You pretty much don't have to go to class. He tells you what's going to be on midterms and exams, and has slides that cover what he's talking about. He doesn't just ramble in class, but he also rambles on his slides. Concepts are all laid out clearly in the textbook, so I recommend you get it. (It is really hard to find an online PDF of this one)
Boring lectures. Useless slides. Easy test if you read the textbook, but you won't know where you did wrong because there's no answer key. Absolutely no feedback on exams.
Professor Hosseini can seem intimidating as a first year prof but as the course goes on the content gets a lot easier to understand! Exams and finals have essays with topics he gives you before so you can study them thoroughly. You'll do good in this class if you show up and participate!
Professor Hosseini runs a well-structured class. While the content can be challenging, engaging with the material and using tools like unstuck ai can really help. Overall, a fair and rewarding experience.
This professor is one of the few who cares about his students. If you attend the classes, the course will be straight forward. He makes clear what to study. Overall he's a great professor; take advantage. Thank you Mr. Goat
HE'S SO FUNNY I LOVED HIS CLASS. He used real-life examples to explain concepts and joked around, which made it fun. Chapters 5&6 were super tough and could use more time so you have to practice on those, but overall, he made philosophy fun for someone who didn't think they'd like it. He copies and pastes the practice problems onto the exam
So hard to understand what he is talking about, slides and lectures are confusing, would not recommend him at all. So confusing, tests are super essay heavy and hard. They ask super detailed, ultra specific questions. Don't take his class
Clear he's been teaching PHI for a long time. He is funny and has lots of student participation. Lots of reading but would call it very optional. Graded by few things but weights are small ish on the few tasks (no 40, 50% exams). Would take my next class with him.
This professor is honestly not as bad as the ratings. I still HATED this class, but I would ask questions and he would always answer them, no matter how long his stories took him to get there. He is good with office hours and accommodated me even though I couldn't make his set times. I just did the work, asked questions, and tried. Boom, an A.
While the class wasn't hard, I wouldn't say I enjoyed him. So boring that it made the content unbearable. He felt a bit intimidating and would interrupt his lectures just to call out and focus on a student who was whispering to their partner beside them. The TA's marked very easy though, and he was very transparent with what would be on the exams.
The class is brutal but the prof makes it bearable. Readings are optional. Two midterms that you need to write a four page essay for.
He genuinely cares about his students, and it shows in the way he teaches and interacts with us. His class changed many of my perspectives, and if I had the chance, I would take it again in a heartbeat. He never forces his views on us but presents every concept and philosopher equally, allowing us to form our own opinions.
Not a fan of the subject, but the Professor's lectures are interesting, and he goes over homework answers in class. If you listen in class and do your readings, exams are a breeze. He gives students the format of each exam, which includes the type of questions asked and what topics. He is also very nice and will review an exam and re-grade it.
there is a reason most people barely get a C in this course.
Like him a lot more in this course. Much clearer. It was aight.
Avoid if you can, so confusing and such boring lectures
40+ pages of reading a week (80+ per week if taking in summer). NOT OPTIONAL. 2 tests + 1 exam.10 mcq, 2 short answers, 1 essay question that needs to be 1500 words. you need 10 direct quotations from the readings for the essay and short answer or he will fail you. over 1/5 of the class dropped after 1st test.
The prof himself is a nice guy, friendly and respectful. But the course is very confusing and boring, I don't understand the meaning of this course or what I'm supposed to do to get good grades. He often says philosophy is about understanding more than memorizing, but I just don't understand anything. I couldn't write anything during the test.
Easy test, multiple choice was so easy and as long as you read the first three lectures the essay part was a breeze. YES, 1200 words in that time frame is insane but even if the essay is good then you should get a good grade.
Not clear what he wants us to learn, rambles, class average was a 55. Slides aren't clear (way too much info). Complains to class about not studying. Material is boring and have no idea why I need it for a psychology degree. Do everything you can to get a different prof. Not worth it, not surprised I failed lol.
Hard marker, hard to understand lecture, rambles. Not worth it.
Lots of these comments are negative but he is willing to help if you ask him for help. he is also willing to adjust grades if asked to review. he tells us clearly what's on the test. he is a chill guy if you show him you care but if you dont ask him for help dont expect help. I had a midterm with him today and was surprised how he makes things easy
Very respectable man who knows what he's doing
Prof H. is not a spiteful or mean person, and the negative ratings he's gotten do not reflect him. It is reading-heavy, but the slides average 24ish slides and half of them aren't loaded with information. The topics are simple and he is clear about what is on each midterm. The people complaining just refused to listen and put in any work to review.
His expectations in this course for the exam and quizzes are very unclear. The textbook questions are needed to at least pass the course, but half of the answers are not in the textbook that you need to purchase for the class, so its difficult to know if you are on the right track or not. I went to the TA's and they are a waste of space!
He's very passionate about philosophy and funny. States clearly that if you do the textbook questions then you will be able to pass, the tests reflect the exercises in the textbook and if you have practiced them then you will do well. I have not been to office hours but he has stated multiple times that if you are struggling he is happy to help.
Multiple readings to complete for each lecture. Exams are not easy. You must know exactly what you are talking about for the long essay questions; if you do not know everything and use quotes, you will not be able to do well. Took this first-year philosophy class thinking it would be easier but it is definitely not a bird course. Lots of work.
If you thought you were gonna do a single second of critical thinking in this class, think again. This class is almost like a math class, methodical and equations, but no actual critical thinking involved, just solving equations. Half the answers are not in the textbook. Prof is ok, but so boring and unclear with his explanations.
Do yourself a favour and do not enrol in this course. Prof is a nice person but exam expectations are not normal (1500 words essay + 2 short questions + multiple choice in 80 minutes and you don't know the question in advance). The modules are easy but a lot of readings required to then end up with a grade between 60-75% average some less some fail
The prof did a great job explaining concepts and the midterms were extremely fair and covered what was taught. I will say, going to every lecture is extremely important since reading the slides at home does not seem to cover what is taught in person. There are extra readings but I don't think they were super necessary if you went to the lectures.
The prof tells you what to study for the exam and the tests. It's still difficult, but it helps.
Just because someone is smart does not mean they should teach. I'm a firm believer in rating the prof, not the course. Save yourself and run as fast as you can. In the back row, I very quietly whispered to the person next to me if they had gotten what he just said, as I missed it. He stopped class to go on a rant about how disrespectful I was.
worst exams I've ever seen my entire life. stay away. prof isn't mean but if you choose to enrol in his class say goodbye to your dream gpa
very lecture heavy, definitely worth attending classes if you want to do well. lectures were boring at times, just imagine it as like a podcast in the background while you're doing something else. he would sometimes engage in debates w the class. final exam's doable if you know the content and he states the essay topics prior
