Wonderful. Absolutely engaging, entertaining, and insightful. One of the highlights of my University career thus far. Do yourself a favour.
Greatest teacher I've ever had! Opened up my mind and made all my other classes make sense.
Maicher is one of my favorite profs. Explains authors clearly and really engages the class. There's a huge amount of material that's covered, but the papers are short and sweet, however the exam in cumlitive, which is scary, but the class is awesome!!!
Without a doubt one of the best teachers I've had so far. Class content is rich and interesting. Prof is very engaging. Very entertaining lecturer.
Maicher has the mannerisms and accent of an aristocrat from the old world. Also, he?s a an old fashioned moralist, through and through, who has the tendency to be dogmatic in thought, resulting in one desiring to stand up in class and decry: Stop preaching to me MORALITY MAN!
His lectures were a little ambigious, but if you were prepared for class, there was no problem following along. Wasn't the most helpful outside the classroom, but the atmosphere of the class overall was good!
THE BEST! Political theory is dense material and he makes it crystal clear. He lets us pick appart the theories and plays devils advocat until we get to the real problems with a certain author's theory. There is an obscene amount of material, but do your readins and attend calss. And Maicher is easy on the eyes I might add.
Good overall, but some negatives. Knows his stuff and assigns easy summaries. Funny (most of the time), laid-back, and friendly with students. Really likes class discussion. BUT he avoids questions before and after class, and he takes a while to get assignments back. His voice can put you to sleep. SO MUCH READING! And a cummulative exam.
A great professor. Clear and interesting. Good class personality and good rapport with students. I found him very helpful for discussing subjects that were not directly related to the course content. Tells you exactly what you should know for the tests. Cumulative exam, but not difficult if you know your subject. Ever so young for a prof!
I did not enjoy his class, or his teaching style at all. He gave absolutely NO guidelines whatsoever as to what would be on either of the midterms, or the exam. Considering the exam was worth 60%, it would have helped if he had done so. He doesn't test everything, but rather bases the entire test on one or two topics. Textbook is necessary!
Hated his class from the first day. I did the readings and still couldn't follow what he was saying. Bases his midterm on one or two parts of the book, and doesn't help us in term of preparation for said midterms. I taught myself most of the course using the textbook. Made things even more complicated when someone asked a question. Glad it's over!
Over all a very good prof. I found it frustrating that he didn't go over what would be on his tests, but then again, it is university. If you pay attention you will be able to follow the course no problem. He made the information interesting and fun. He's a very funny professor and made Critical thinking actually interesting. But go to class.
Very efficient professor, able to present the contents of the course clearly and interestingly. Follows book very closely, but gives good tips to help us better understand. Good class personality and fun to have as a prof. Not difficult to approach if you know what you want. Tests: a little daunting, so be comfortable with your knowledge of course.
Very good lecturer, interesting and intruiging (though political legal theory already is on its own). Began to enjoy the class less and less over the semester as he tries to cover too much material and it becomes pretty blurry. Would be better to focus on less theories/cases in a more in depth way.
Prof Maicher. Amazing prof. Fair marker. Do the reading and you will succeed. He's quite comical in class and speaks well/clearly. His tests may seem a little tough but only because he believes in being a professor who doesn't just pass a student for the sake of passing them. He's a good wakeup call to all first year students. F-ing gorgeous too
Ive never used rate my prof. The material covered in class is a challenge to any novice, I learned to enjoy the class and made sure I never missed lectures. I learned a lot and though I haven't been doing well because I'm not really one for doing readings. He is approachable and knowledgeable and communicates well in a way that students understand.
I enjoyed most of the lectures. The prof is a very interesting character and extremely amusing. The stuff covered in class is interesting for the most part, but there's way too much material. Philosophy can drive a person mad...easy on the students. Btw Mr. Maicher, you are a cute one and your fly is down :P
Confusing class, but he was pretty good at explaining things. Really interesting guy; lots of funny anecdotes. Didn't want to take the class, but really enjoyed his teaching style. It's not easy, there's lots of reading, but his lectures really help.
Well, I must say that 2 weeks in, I'm already hooked. I dreaded this class (I'm a former B.Mus student from 7 years ago who never had to take PHI, so I was worried). Not only is Prof. Maicher interesting to listen to, he's got a great sense of humour, makes the class fun, plus he's not bad to look at (definitely adds the eye candy factor)
What ethnicity?
The material was very interesting and he is quite funny yet arrogant. He does not reply to any emails and not available for students questions. In addition, he would just not show up to class many times without any notice to the students. Mr. Maicher you have much to learn about what consists of a great professor.
Great class, great prof; he made the material much easier to understand. He has great knowledge about the course material and also provided some interesting asides. He is pretty funny too, and uses good examples to explain the material. Awesome textbook too. It was not a super easy class though; he actually wanted us to come away with something.
He put a lot of effort into this class and it showed. He is passionate about philosophy and it showed. He took a dry class and made it interesting to be there. I really liked his emphasis on thinking critically about media. It was my second last class of my undergrad and he was one of my favorite profs.
ok...so while I am disappointed in my final grade (I have emailed Prof. Maicher to see my final exam), I must say that this class was still very interesting. I thought his knowledge, interest and passion for the subject really came through. Oh yes...he's still hot. :D
This prof is Amazing! He is brilliant and makes his classes so interesting and engages in many discussions with his students. Although his grading methods are slightly stricter than others, I highly recommend taking any class taught by Prof Maicher!!
One of the best profs I've had. Fairly young, but knows his stuff backwards and forwards. Excellent communicator. Invites discussion. Funny side comments. Reasonable workload. 50% final exam. Enjoyed each class, even though I'm no poli thought geek. Recommended.
Prof. Maicher is great! He makes political thought fun and engaging. This was the first political thought class that I have actually enjoyed. Take his class!
Best poli sci prof i've had so far.
No idea what everyone else is talking about because Sasha is so hard to understand ... He lectures in riddles and is just not clear! If you actually want to enjoy political thought take saraka who is fun and engaging Sasha is boring...you'd think that a younger prof would be more engaging but not at all!!!! Avoid at all costs.... I'm serious.
The best professor I had in my entire undergrad. He is tough, but you learn SO much. As a regular A student I was happy with my A- and worked for it, but the material he taught me has been profoundly useful in so many other classes, and even now sets be at a distinct advantage in one of my Master's classes. I would highly recommend him.
Clear in class, but unreliable to meet outside of class. Often hostile when asked questions, infrequently shows up to office hours. Unclear about exam material and expectations. Good public speaker, knowledge of the course material. Just everything else as a prof he needs to work on.
This professor is very clear during lectures, however, in order to do well you must attend all classes and keep up with the readings. Additionally, he asks very specific questions on the midterm/final so make sure to look into all major examples/thought experiments used by the theorists. Good professor, but I found this course very difficult.
Unless you're really good at reading philosophy, you have to attend the lectures. They're pretty intense, but pay attention and you'll do fine on exams.
If you do the readings and keep up in class, you will learn SO much. I`ve had him for 3 clases. Prof. Maicher is extremely knowledgeable in his field and it comes across in his lectures. Also extremely helpful when it came to help with assignments and office hours. Highly recommend if you want to come away with a real understanding of the content.
Professor Maicher was one of my favourite profs so far. His class was by no means easy, and if you didn't go to the lectures it would be hard to write the exams, but I learned so much and it prepared my well for my next political philosophy class.
Undeniably the best professor of my undergraduate career so far. His class single-handedly took my critical thinking and reading comprehension skills to another level. He makes you work hard and think even harder, but it's all worth it at the end. I would recommend this class to any student that is looking for an actual education.
Professor Maicher is a great lecturer who really knows his stuff! He will answer questions in class and really engages students. TAs were harsh markers on the paper, but the midterm and final were fairly straightforward. He doesn't use ppt and covers a lot of material in class, so make sure to bring your laptop.
The lectures are great, just go to them you will thank yourself later. This isn't a "read it all later and catch up" class. Really smart guy, and great professor. Weak point: no feed back or one on one at all. Also almost made us cry in the last class with Weber and the hopelessness of the world. Still. Great class.
Great prof! Doesn't have slides so going to class and taking notes is necessary. But it's well worth going to class because he knows his stuff and encourages interesting class discussion. He really makes you think! Take a class with him if you can.
Great lecturer.
Prof.Maicher is not my preferred teacher for Philosophy class. He does not come prepared to class, provides no slides, is not on Blackboard and does not email his students any further info needed. He goes on tangents during class and does not stay directed. I can tell that he enjoys Philosophy, but I'm not sure if he's right for a first-year class.
A good prof overall. He doesn't provide notes online but he lectures directly from the textbook so it's easy to make up if you miss class. Midterms are fair and there are no surprises if you study properly.
I hate this class. All he does is talk, and repeat the textbook. His exams are not fair. He doesnt usually focus much on the things on the exam and he just tells you everything covered will be on the exam so not very helpful. Avoid if you can!
When a prof is meant to teach about the dangers of rhetoric and importance of substantive argumentation, and uses gratuitous amounts of rhetorical devices in their lectures, without ever saying anything substantial, I can't take them seriously.
Far too often he goes off topic making the actual content of the course confusing. He does not provide notes to any extent. He lectures with no visuals. And does not repeat important information. Does not explain anything further than the textbook so if you don't understand the readings...you're screwed! Not good for a 1st year class
He is unclear, unprepared, and late for both the midterms. I don't think he was meant to teach a first year class... He didn't really teach, just talked on and on. I learned most of the content through the textbook and going to tutorial sessions. He did not specify anything for the midterms. Overall, I would not recommend him.
Not a good lecturer for first year students.
Great prof. People who dislike him are generally the kind who aren't prepared for classes and lectures. There are no surprises with him if you take your academic success seriously.
Difficult to follow along to his lectures. Often goes off topic and does not clearly outline what is expected for the exams. He does not use any visuals. Do not recommend for 1st year students.
Great prof! If you attend class and do the readings, you'll do fine. If you don't understand course material, he's very helpful if you go to his office hours. Also makes jokes often, which made philosophy a bit more bearable.
Very interesting lecturer, makes the subject material interesting. Poor organizational skills though, and very late at giving back assignments/marks. Very difficult to contact outside of class, and often late for office hours.
Go to the tutorials that the philosophy department offers to students. The material is confusing but it could have been explained a bit better. Know everything in the text!
I've listened to the TTC and Yale lectures available online that cover the same material as this class and, for what it's worth, I found that Mr. Maicher's lectures are above them in terms of engagement and clarity. To all the professors at UOttawa and those aspiring to become, take note. I really think this guy sets the bar.
Great Prof
I've taken other classes with this prof because he is AMAZING. His lecture style is engaging, his substance is clear, and I truly learned a lot from him. Definitely recommended.
I would NEVER recommend taking one of his classes. He was unhelpful and I could hardly understand what he was trying to teach. The only reason I passed this class was because I went to extra tutorials that TAs were holding & because I read the text book - no thanks to him.
This professor is the worst.... that's what i think. He is just copy what's in the book. In a philosophy class, talking about the knowledge of Politics... No PowerPoint , No explanation, No note, nothing.....
No blackboards , no notes ,no power points , no practices ,buy a textbook with 170 dollars , then super hard test. Dont know what he wants to teach .He is the worst professor to the first year students ,especially international students. Dont choose his class , thats the only suggestion !
He is not the best professor I have had this year. You should go to to class and try to listen because he lectures right from the textbook, so it's good to hear what he has to say. When you ask what is on the midterm, he will generally give a good idea of what is on it, as well as hints. He recycles questions, so get past midterms. Good luck!
Very interesting and engaging lecturer, puts a lot of thought into the examples he uses. Can be a little unclear with grading criteria but if you attend the lectures and do the readings thoroughly and diligently, you should do well. Good luck!
Great lecturer but no notes so be prepared to type. Otherwise amazing teacher
Judging by the comments, he may not be so bad in poli sci, but he was the absolute worst prof I've ever had in phi. No notes, no power points, terrible explanations, hard tests, unclear expectations, disorganized, didn't even use the right textbook. Overall, absolutely worst prof i've ever had. He's worse than Conheady.
Professor Maicher was by far the best professor I have encountered yet. His anecdotes were hilarious, his lectures were provocative, and he made the material both meaningful and relative. Admittedly it took a few lectures to warm up to him, but he literally received a standing ovation after his final lecture. I highly recommend him.
Please don't just take everything on here as if it's a fact. Use your discretion. Objectively speaking: He doesn't post any slides and doesn't use blackboard, but you don't actually need that anyway. All you have to do is come to class, listen to what he has to say, mostly think and def read the text. He is funny, helpful and very understanding.
BRILLIANT prof. Really knows his stuff; would highly recommend taking a class with him. He goes over the textbook in class, but reading it ahead of time helps follow along with his lectures. Lectures are usually spoken. Only prof I had who got an ovation at the end of the semester.
Very boring teacher. Doesn't use slides, just expects you to read the texts and then stands up and talks for an hour and a half. Boring, unclear of what he's talking about. Very unclear of what he expects from assignments. No blackboard, only communication through email.
He's really great, I would definitely take another class with him! Though it was challenging because he wanted to make sure we were actually developing critical thinking skills, he made sure to go over the questions (multiple choice in textbook, not technically mandatory because he didn't check, but good for studying). He is also very funny.
Prof. Maicher's lectures are good, he's interest, clear with the subject mater, has funny comments etc. But, he is terrible at answering emails, and office hours are not very helpful. If you want to enjoy the lectures and material, I suggest this course, but beware that you will not have any additional support.
Probably one of the best professors I have had thus far. Not only is he a good presenter, but he does not use slides, which is actually good. He is a very clear lecturer, and as long as you attend class and listen actively, you will do fine in the course. Professor Maicher deserves a full-time position for sure!
He uses no slides or video aids which makes it difficult to pass If you miss a day for legitimate reasons. He doesn't answer emails and sporadically shows up to office hours. He gives no specifications about what's on tests or his expectations which makes it hard to study. He would rather you read a 800 pg book then tell you what to focus on.
Entertaining and interesting lectures. My favourite prof of the semester. Really knows the subject and enjoys teaching it. He gets off topic sometimes but I always found the anecdotes to be enlightening.
Worse prof I've ever had. Never responded to my e-mail, didn't specify what's gonna be on exam, etc. Better to focus on a textbook, not on lectures.
Great prof, entertaining, knows what he's talking about, and made Pol Thought interesting for me. Don't expect to have your hand held, if you want the exact questions on the test, good luck. But if you're an adult who can change their pants by themselves and attend the lectures, ask questions, and enjoy his (great!) lecture style, you'll do well.
I would have been better off skipping class and only doing the readings than going and trying to take notes. Interesting guy, and tried to make the class more interesting but if you don't read the course pack you're screwed
Professor Maicher, in my opinion, is one of the best profs at uOttawa! He is a talented lecturer who always entertains your questions and/or comments. He really made Intro to Political Thought interesting for me; can't wait to take Modern Political Thought II with him! 100% recommend :).
Probably one of my favourite professors in university; he's hilarious. He's one of the reasons I learned to appreciate and love Pol Thought. If you go to class, pay attention to his lectures, organize your notes well, there is no way you can't pass. I only read the readings that I needed to write my summaries, and managed a solid A-.
Good professor who clearly knows the subject matter. Highly lecture heavy (no slides at all), but he keep things flowing well with his clear and concise explanations. His comments of assignments can be vague, but his expectations usually clear. Assignments are reasonably challenging and the readings are relatively easy to find.
funny guy but gets off topic often. don't even have to come to class to know what's going on.
Sascha is one of my favorite professors that I have had. His lectures can be difficult to follow at times but he clears things up if you ask. He is a hilarious person too! His class is one of those classes that I get excited to go to.
Easy class, would be better if he had a Blackboard or posted notes. Liberal propagandist but that's to be expected I suppose. Just read the book.
The material in this class actually interested me. Sascha was very knowledgeable on the course material, seeing as he uses absolutely no technology. No slideshows at all during lectures and refuses to even use blackboard. He is also difficult to reach by email. I found him very monotoned and ruined a class I otherwise would have enjoyed.
Not a good professor for this material. He doesn't use slides so if you miss a lesson, you don't know what you've missed. He is a tough marker and doesn't accept answers that aren't exactly what he had in mind, even though the material taught doesn't have a right or wrong answer. Read the book thoroughly and attend every class and you'll be fine.
Awful prof, rarely answers emails and when he does, its 3 months later. He never told us our grades, so I didn't know if I was failing or not. He doesn't tell you what is on any of the tests, he would rather you read the entire textbook. He is extremely unclear about everything he talks about and he is all over the place. I would rate him 0/10.
Don't take this class as an elective and switch profs if it's mandatory for you. He has no slides/notes, doesn't even use Blackboard, and makes the final worth 65% with 2 midterms and still makes the final include everything from the course. His lecture seem important in the beginning but really the textbook is the same thing. Just switch out tbh.
Prof. Maicher does not use powerpoints or any other forms of technology when teaching. Therefore, you will have to rely on everything he says during his lectures. Albeit he makes an effort to make the material engaging, it can get difficult to follow along, if you're not an auditory learner. If you aren't, then I would recommend switching out.
On the first day of class, my first impression of Prof. Maicher was that he was completely arrogant and rude. And while I still think he's arrogant, the more classes I went to, the more I think he's also fair in his grading and teaches what needs to be taught. And really, all philosophers have an ego. But don't take his class if you want an easy A.
I've had Professor Maicher for a total of 3 courses; POL 2108, POL 3109 and currently POL 3105. He is an AMAZING professor, and he is VERY easy to get a decent grade (A-, B+) in if you understand that politics/philosophy is a huge grey area . Bring your passion to class, but know that your understanding isn't the only one out there. You'll do fine!
Really enjoyed his lectures. Both his teaching of the content and his anecdotes were interesting and I actually looked forward to going to class. Midterms were relatively easy and the final wasn't bad with a day or two of studying. He's a nice guy and if you're willing to go to class and take notes, you shouldn't have any trouble
Professor Maicher was a real gem to have as a prof for my PHI1101 class. He is quite inspiring, very funny, and tries to make (at times very dry material) engaging. That being said he relies heavy on lectures and does not use online resources (which I found okay), but if you miss a class you may fall behind. All in all awesome prof.
The class itself is really hard, read the textbook, but also attend every lecture because the prof explains the textbook stuff really really well. He's funny in a dark kind of way, but does relate info to current events so that helps. Tests are easy if you study what he says, but also the textbook exercises. Would take the prof again, not the class
Overall a good prof for philosophy, although the class itself was mildly unfavourable. Good DJ, very questionable taste in the top singles of 1977.
He is a real sweet heart
he explains things well, and in different ways. Good class discussions too
Really engaging prof... Makes the material interesting and is open to debate with his students which makes the class interesting. Do not miss any lecture and learn how to take proper notes.
Awesome Prof. Super funny and will always be ready to clarify anything you need. Try to get into one of his smaller classes though because he likes them better.
Maicher seems to take a sincere interest in his students' learning and with his lectures. Lectures are engaging and humourous, which is enjoyable. No online notes, as mentioned, but if you pay attention in class you'll do well. He is also approachable outside of class. Having the text in PHI1101 will help. Do the exercises. Great prof.
In my opinion, horrible professor. He uses no powerpoints and posts no notes online so you have to rely on everything he says in class, which is impossible to follow along with. Also, he gave out a 1 page syllabus (most classes syllabus' are usually at least a couple pages long) with barely any information on it and almost all the dates were wrong.
He's obviously very passionate about what he does. Gives exemples during the lectures but no bright space so none of the lectures get posted, aka show up. His midterms are very specific. Getting your grades is hard as they aren't posted and tracking him down is also hard as he doesn't answer emails or when he does, its not quickly.
Super nice guy but not a super nice prof. Lectures are dull and hard to follow, and he's not clear on teaching the things you need to know. Really hard to contact as he does not have bright space and takes a long time to answer emails. Make sure you get the textbook for this class as he uses it majority of the time.
He doesn't put notes up online so you have to go to class. But, you can learn most of it from the textbook. Go to know what you're learning, then teach yourself. Basically everyone fails this class, know your stuff - MEMORIZE! Go to the mentors for when you have a question - or to him directly he's good one on one.
People are ripping on Maicher cause he doesn't post anything online, but that's just his teaching style. A solid attempt at making kids actually come to a class they paid for. Also, his classes are all based on the textbook, it really shouldn't be difficult for a uni student to go over the textbook and look at what they missed. Also network, it helps
His lectures are great. He does just talk about most things from the textbook, but he does an incredible job of explaining concepts and doesn't teach everything in the textbook. So I highly recommend you go to class. Tests are not hard as long as you go to class and study. Highly recommend him for this class!!
Doesn't use his bright space at all so there is no powerpoint and you cannot see your marks. So its either you show up to every class and take good notes or you can just pop open the textbook, because he teaches directly from it. also in lectures he rambles a lot and skips over material and explanations are not always clear
Decent explainer, but he talks about himself too much. He kind of wastes your time at lectures by rambling. He tends to test you on stuff covered in class, so that's a good reason to show up, but the textbook is insanely useful. Tried not to let this affect me, but his class is definitely harder than the other classes. Fight for your grades.
At the beginning of the semester I didnt appreciate his method of teaching. Meaning he talks and u write and no of Brightspace or PowerPoints. It was his word and ur ability to catch up with him. Regardless of that, the course is pretty much self taught cz in class he explains the material in depth in class. Great prof, would take him again!
amazing lectures, easy to understand if you go to class and read the book! The midterm was worth 40 %, 40 questions. MC, T or F, matching, and short answers. Final worth 60% and 60 questions same format as the midterm. Questions are straightforward, must read the book. Very funny and smart prof. Easy A!
Really nice guy and a great prof. He's very knowledgeable about philosophy and gives interesting lectures. Make sure you study for the midterm and final since they're the only things you're graded on. Overall, I enjoyed this class and would take it again.
Unusually hard tests even if you study a lot
A really good prof in my opinion. He has fun lectures, although his style tends to lead to him rambling on quite a bit and there are no PP or brightspace backups if you miss a class. Easy A if you show up and take notes. I feel like he's been told that he's supposed to weed out the weak students and that's what he does.
This is by far the worst prof I have come across at Uottawa. I took his critical thinking class. I went to every class, read every reading, did all homework and assignments and still had no idea what was going on in that class. I tried scheduling time outside of class for help and emailing him questions he never answered. Do not take this class.
Read the book before class. He lectures without PPT for this particular class. Not all topics are super interesting, but some great discussions can occur when you ask questions. If you take this class seriously, you will likely enjoy it. If you enjoy Philosophy to some degree, without a doubt take his class. 10/10 would take him again.
What a great prof.
Doesn't use brightspace, doesn't use powerpoint, gets side tracked really fast, talks weird, slurps really loud and on purpose when on the mike. self taught mostly from the textbook.
If you don't go to class then you're screwed because he has a total of 3 power point slides for the entire semester and doesn't even have BrightSpace. However, in my opinion, he's a really interesting prof and I had a lot of respect for him. Would definitely take again!
This prof does not post anything online. There is no doubt that he knows what hes talking about but he will often go on rants that are non related. He also rarely ensures that everyone is on the same page and will only pick the same students to answer his questions. Nice guy outside of class but would not take his courses again.
Bizarre professor. I think he teaches pretty well, but he goes on tangents pretty often and strays from the textbook sometimes. Make sure you do those readings. He also doesn't use slides during the lectures, so listen carefully. Final is worth 60% of the final mark. Beware!
He doesnt post or use any type of slideshows, he believes having the class do badly, will show that if you happen to do well you earned your degree. Class averages are always being bell curved, and hes ruthless with grading. STAY AWAY IF YOU WANT A GOOD GPA!
I feel bad giving him a bad rating because he's smart, and a great guy. Sadly, his teaching isn't. He constantly goes on long tangents, doesn't provide outlines for essays, and is hard to reach outside of class. While he's great if you're wanting to learn to learn, you will most likely not be getting a good grade. He's proud of low class averages.
Stay away. He does not use brightspace or slideshows at all. He is very confusing and marks hard. Always bell curving grades and even stated several times that he is a bad teacher and his passing grades get lower each year. The final exam was worth 60% of the final mark.
The course itself is easy, but you have to teach yourself from the textbook as he goes on irrelevant rants and doesn't use powerpoints. He consistently shows up about 10 mins late to class, and was even late for the final exam. The exam is 60% and he took over a month to post the final grades, and didn't even have them up by the official date.
Smart professor, however, in order to understand you must already have an understanding of the material, so reading the textbook before class is essential. He writes his tests to try and trick students, in order to still do good you must have extensively done the practice questions in the textbook! It is possible to do well but you must work hard!
worst prof ive ever had.
He once forgot which class he was supposed to be teaching and did a political philosophy lecture instead. Didn't post final grades until 4 days after the university deadline. Is often late to class and doesn't respond to emails. Is often disrespectful and talks down to students. Take his class only if you want a constant headache.
Only two assessments: midterm and final. But if you attend lectures and actually listen/take notes, the tests are fairly straight forward. I found his lectures really interesting. Sometimes he can seem intimidating when answering students but overall, I liked him a lot. Would take his class again
I thought this class would be fine, the material is interesting and he seemed knowledgable. After the first midterm I changed my perspective. Marking is extremely hard, super specific and he offers no help. Final worth 50% and gives you no idea whats going to be on it, he is super specific you have to know the entire textbook word for word.
He literally said in class that students should never get A's because it makes them lazy, you literally have to memorize ever single line of the textbook in order to do well. Not willing to give real help for the 50% final. Marks ridiculously hard!!
Although lectures are not mandatory, they are crucial for a good grade because he doesn't have anything online (powerpoints, notes). His exams consist of trick questions and material not covered in class so it's also important to read the textbook. However, his lectures are pretty interesting and stimulating once you get used to his teaching style.
Maicher is complex. He seems anti-tech, judging by his annoying lack of Brightspace use and the years it takes him to reply to emails. The class was 40% midterm, 60% final. Tests weren't difficult but if you don't go to class and take really good notes you're screwed. In that way, attendance is sort of mandatory if you care about your grade.
He goes of on tangents, expects you to memorize the entire textbook, and grades pretty hardly. Refuses to give students real help. Expects a lot in a short amount of writing for his tests.
Professor is regularly late to class and office hours. He does not focus his lectures. Expectations are unrealistic and unclear... avoid if you can.
Seems like a well-meaning professor but he is often late to class, office hours, giving grades back, etc. His lectures are well-organized but he often goes into too much detail which is not helpful or relevant. The multiple choice on exams was difficult and was based on quotations from the textbook. He doesn't post slides and doesn't answer emails!
I took two terrific classes with Professor Maicher, really were the highlights of my time at the U of Ottawa. I hope he still struggles to simplify the complexities of theoretical constructs. He's articulate, he'll catch you with an unexpected joke, he's earnest, he's brilliant really and I hope he checks this some day to me say Thank YOU Sascha:)
You know what is funny? He mentioned in one class that he dislikes anything superfluous. Well this dude is the exact definition of superfluous.
OMG!!!! This Class was LIT!!!!! Thank You Sascha! :)
Kind of ridiculous how often he's late to his own lectures.
Wow! The luckiest students at u of o fall 2019 are the critical thinking student with Sascha this semester. I just reconnected with him since moving back to Ottawa. He hasnt changed a day wow. Brilliant! Ottawa best kept secret! Queens University wow, you gave up a good one. Only professor I would ever recommend professionally from u of o.
This is the most boring prof I have ever heard. I went to a few different classes for PHI 1101 and by far this is the worst one. Easy marks but you might want to shoot yourself in the process. If you hate your life and don't care about learning new knowledge, this is the class for you.
Funny that he's anti-tech when so many of the issues he has as a prof are resolved if he'd just use brightspace. He basically handicaps himself and all of his students every semester. Lectures are a must go bc he tends to just drop a couple of lecture-only questions every exam. Just take the hit if you can and grind out the book, its all you need.
His tests are some of the most confusing and unfair things i have ever seen. For test 2 on fallacies in particular, he had a general question telling us to "identify all the different fallacies" while there are 31 of them and different types of them like "relevance fallacies", "induction fallacies", and "formal fallacies". AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID.
This prof is a TOTAL DISASTER. He changed the date of the test at the last minute even though on the syllabus it said a certain date. He is totally unavailable for help during his office hours and is often late for class. Tests are graded incredibly hard and most examples are hyper specific word for word from either the lecture or the textbook.
He goes on long confusing tangents and expects you to know everything. SHOW UP TO CLASS if you dont you'll fail (half the class ditched and they got 10-20% on test1, those that stayed 70-80%). He adds things that arent in the textbook on the midterms. I suggest you share notes with classmates because he uses complex vocab/terms. Avoid if possible!!
One of the worst profs. When going over midterms, he makes it seem as if he wants his students to fail. He brags about how his averages drop each year and demeans students with the way he answers questions. Enjoyed the material but the prof absolutely ruined it for me. Avoid this class.
Maicher's test were unreasonably difficult, having questions relating to obscure and insignificant quotes from texts, he was also late for almost every single class. His lectures are not terrible, as he often includes light humour, and they are absolutely mandatory to pass. Overall a decent professor, but comes across as kind of arrogant.
This guy was my introduction to philosophy at the university, and after taking his class it seems as though the rest of my instructors in any department have plenty to live up to. This is the type of teacher any student who is eager to learn should be excited to have. Lectures are important, reading is important. Put in the work. Wont regre
Prof Maicher was an extremely boring lecturer. He does not use powerpoints or brightspace so it was very hard to understand what he was talking about because he often went on unimportant tangents. This class is passable if you do all the readings and do not go to class. Overall, Maicher is not a good professor.
A lot of people don't like Sascha cause he doesn't hand out easy As. This is the most difficult course I have taken, but one of my favourites. Listen to the lectures, do the homework, and ask questions. Super funny guy who tells good stories. I learned a lot from his class besides the textbook material and loved it. Must take your own notes.
I took this class before in first year and got roughly 35% on the first midterm with this same professor and dropped it. I took it again this year and did good by putting some work. He is a honest professor that takes his job very seriously and for that he has my respect. I'm a pretty average student always found school hard so work hard and pass
I really enjoyed this class, the topics we covered are really interesting and It really does open your mind to think about world differently! I get it Saschas teaching style or humour isnt for everyone but that does not mean he is a horrible prof. Ps. Literally the only people that disliked him dont even show up to class even tho its mandatory.
I know lots of people don't like him, but those are usually the people who skip class or don't bother to do the readings and practice questions. Yes, the class is hard, but it's fair. His lectures are extremely engaging and easy to follow. My only complaint is that he doesn't use brightspace or provide his lecture slides.
A useless prof for your exam and grade, he only covers some of the points in textbook and exams. And his lecture style makes me hard to concentrate. I passed the course by studying on the textbook throughly and attending the group tutorial with his 0 effort on teaching me. The only good thing about him is that he gave us a word bank on exams.
He's an alright guy. Maybe a little pretentious.
The usual. Midterm was worth 40% (MCQ, TF, Short answer), Exam 60% (same as midterm). It wouldve been worth less if there was essay but that was removed because he didnt have enough TAs. Go to class and take notes since some stuff isnt in textbook. Good prof, no complaints. Study hard. I dont know why ppl complain. Its uni its supposed to be hard
This is an online course, but his microphone is extremely awful. I can not understand any word from him. No PPT, no handwritten things, the only thing I can do for this course is to study the textbook which is like a big dictionary.
Honestly he was a really nice guy and a funny prof who engaged with his students but this course is so difficult. I could barely understand anything he taught and ended up failing the course, but when I took it again with a different prof I passed with a great mark. He's nice, but his teaching is lacking
Honestly he's not a bad guy. He throws in some jokes here and there. However, his lectures are dreadful to sit through. He goes by his materials really fast and it is so hard to write along or take notes. He doesn't use brightspace so good luck getting the material. I honestly failed every exam. It was his generosity of bonus marks that helped me
Professor Maicher's classes were interesting, however, his exams are tough. Make sure to review every day, or else you won't pass.
His lectures were the highlight of my week. He can talk for 3 hours about a subject, seem to go off topic then brilliantly bring everything back to his main point. If you pay attention and review his material you should be able to get a good grade. However, he only gives you chances to get grades using 2 midterms and a final weighed 20 20 60.
Maicher is a great prof for people who care about the class they're paying for and will actually go to it. He loves and respects his job and takes YOUR education seriously. After a degree full of forgetting courses by professors who got me an easy A, retaking PHI1101 in my last year was a meaningful experience and did help me think critically.
Clearly cares about philosophy and I assume genuinely tries to be objective even with his own biases (just as everyone has). Depending on how much you care about critical thinking and truth, is quite engaging and not boring. Test heavy but that's probably because of online class limitations
Very good professor.
Mid1 20% Mid2 20% Final 60%. text PDF free online. Talks the whole 3h. Uses no powerpoints or BS (only test). Always exceeds his lecture times. He does not explain the content well and it can be confusing. I recommend that you study the textbook but also to attend class(not for the content)but to know the symbols/diagram used in tests.
I wrote a review saying 'very good professor' I honestly take it back. Horrible.
3 hour lecture, he talks the whole time, doesn't explain very in depth. Huge textbook is NEEDED to pass/understand but often confusing or vague. Barely records lectures and does not have any notes or powerpoints. Hard to reach. Very tough exams, and 2hr final with supposedly 80Q (to be taken), not seem rational. Want to learn but hard to do so.
super disorganized course. doesnt really know how to use adobe connect or brightspace. grading is super late and rarely answers emails (if yes not helpful). textbook is not great, not good explanations and vague. 3hr lectures of him just talking and 50pg chapters and i still had to do outside research to understand. 2hr final which is irrational
I missed count on the amount of times I have emailed this professor and not once did he reply to them. I thought I was doing fairly well on my exams since I didnt skip class and thought I understood the lectures. I would email him to know my grades (since he doesnt post anything online) and he would never reply. Found out I failed at the end.
Probably one of the worst profs I have taken at uOttawa. Took him until half way into the course to start recording his lectures. If you take this course you will see some guy sitting in his chair rambling for 3 hours straight with an uncalibrated mic. The guy doesn't provide any information pertaining to the format of his tests/final exam.
Moved a midterm from its original scheduled date to a date I where I had a midterm for another class at the same time. I contacted him and the philosophy undergrad department director numerous times about this issue for a week and no got response and no deferral. I got a zero because I clearly cant write 2 midterms at once. Thanks.
If you have to take PHI 1101 class, you should find another professor... You don't need to attend the class because I think his lectures won't be helpful a lot. His lectures are usually 3 hours. SO BORING. And the textbook that he uses is never helpful at all...
The first class he made it clear he is a hard marker and proud of it. He himself said he is pleased that his students do poorly. He was always 10 minutes late and went on tangents. He's also anti-tech so there was no Brightspace which I really hated.
Does not post any power point slides! I do not reccomend this teacher
good prof. lectures are always interesting and engaging. I find his teaching style very effective and I think more profs should adopt his style.
By far my favourite prof this semester. Love the way he lectures, so engaging and interesting, listens to all students' comments. Explains things thoroughly, speaks slowly so its easy to take notes. Exams are challenging but fair and he'll bump the mark as he wants people to do well. His classes are so fun and he's a great, funny guy!
Usually, you're graded on a 40 60 split between the midterm and final. If you miss lectures, you're screwed, but if you keep up with the class, you should be good
He is a nice guy but very unclear on readings. There are no powerpoints or notes, just verbal lectures which are hard to keep up with, but doable. I would suggest a different prof for this class, but its not the end of the world if you end up with him. Midterm and final were decent, just write down everything he says in class!
Good prof, very kind, and easy exams! Learned life long lessons from him. He may go sometimes bring up topics not really relevant but i think it helps when it comes to learning. Hes awesome and I honestly dont see why so many people dislike him. The only criticism I have is that he doesnt use brightspace a lot, nor any slides. Its ok though lol
I did really well in the midterm (worth 40%) and thought I would end the year with an A+. Got an A and was surprised I tried emailing him more times than I can count and still no reply. His lectures are long and the book is even longer. He doesn't post anything and the you will have to guess what mark you got at the end. He just talks at you.
actually *wanted* to show up to class because he's so fun and interesting.
Basically talked at you for an hour and a half. Refused to use visual aids of upload lecture notes and because of this his lectures were very disorganized and I could never tell when or what he was talking about. I will avoid this prof for the rest of my degree
We only had two evaluations the whole term one 40% the other 60%. The tests are all based of how he words things in class so the textbook is useless for tests. If you don't understand things the exact same way he does get ready to be confused. He can be funny and uses many examples though. Its a coin toss good luck.
In my experience, don't even bother going to lectures. Make detailed notes of the textbook chapters and you should be fine. You will basically teach yourself the course, since lectures consist of him rambling at you for 3 hours with no visual aid or anything to study online. I did well by simply reading and studying from the textbook.
This prof is probably one of the worst ones I have ever had the privilege to encounter, I can't wait to tell my grandchildren about this terrible experience. He doesn't teach, expects you to teach yourself through the textbook and that's it. No lecture slides, nothing but 2 exams for your grade and he NEVER ANSWERS HIS EMAILS. Please run!
Worst professor I've ever had. Unfair, doesnt answer emails, uncaring, and rude
Terrible
doesnt care about his students
Avoid at all costs if you want a decent grade!
He doesn't record his lectures. The TAs dont mark fairly, and we always have more readings than we can handle. Never take this prof
Bad prof
Youre basically paying money to teach yourself. He does record lectures, doesnt show lecture slides, only gives you two exams the entire semester then grades them wrong. Do yourself a favour and dont take him. Just read the entire textbook.
Hes terrible, so not helpful at all. Expects you to teach yourself and is so ableist. Please dont take him.
He's not the worst. His tests are okay, not too hard but not easy either. I never felt like I had to rush. But he doesn't answer emails and his TAs make A LOT of mistakes when marking. Seems like a nice guy but his lectures are monotonous and he refuses to give us any written notes/slides. The (long and boring) textbook will be your best friend.
only grades you on midterm and final, doesn't give you notes or slides so you just have to rewatch his boring lectures full of irrelevant information, he's unreachable outside of class and is just straight rude, i ended up dropping the class
AVOID AVOID AVOID!!! Doesn't have any slides, you just sit there and listen to him talk. Does not answer any emails. His midterms literally contradict what he says in class. Do not take classes with Maicher if you don't have to. One midterm and one exam for your grade.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM EVER. No slides, ignorant, and rude to students. Will not repeat what he says or answers questions. Midterms contradict what he says. Impossible to do well in his class.
This guy got such bad ratings before i was in this course. When i took it he was literally the best prof i've ever had. he vibes with his students so much and he will give you points if you explain yourself and your explanation is justified. the exams were open book and they were easy, the exams themselves were easy too. TAKE HIM!
Dr. Maicher has a lot of personality. Great sense of humor! Knows his stuff Was live classes (which he said he wouldn't record but recorded anyways <3) and they felt like fun banter. Midterm was mismarked but if you talk to him he fixes it. No powerpoint, you need to read the textbook to get quotes, statistics etc.
No PowerPoints, doesnt reply to emails. Good lecturer and he makes the content interesting, but would not take again. Course was bimodual and I was part of the online class and he barely pays attention to the online section. A bit concerning because it seems that he doesnt want his students to do well. We got a high class average and he was
he's not as bad as some of the rating indicate. my advice: buy the textbook and hold onto it for dear life. the class set up is quite confusing until you get to the final then it all makes sense. & he posts NO slides. that being said, he's a caring man and I always enjoy his lectures. he's funny af and his classes always have me contemplating life
One of the best profs I've had so far. He really makes online lectures enjoyable. He only has two evaluations with a 60% final so make sure you study hard. He follows the textbook so if you attend the lecture and read the textbooks you're chilling for the midterm and final. The class is pretty boring at the start but super interesting at the end.
Professor Maicher, is honestly not a bad prof at all. People who complain are ones who just don't put in the effort. His classes are very straightforward, read the assigned readings before class, go to class and write down what he says, make good notes, and you will do well. His exams accurately reflect what's in the readings, and what is taught.
I had mixed feelings about this prof and his no posting slides rule. However, his exams are very accurate to what we learned. There was nothing surprising and it was very fair. If you like to listen to people speak at you, and you type very fast, take him! Otherwise, spare yourself. I am not displeased with him, nor am I charmed by him. Good class!
I had mixed feelings at first, but I think he is a pretty solid prof. It's annoying that he doesn't use slides, but you get used to it pretty fast. Also he talks pretty slow which can get boring but allows you to write down everything. His exams are SUPER fair as long as you do the readings and go to class. I recommend taking this with him!
Lectures can get a bit boring but he's really funny. His tests are fair which is good, but the textbook is your best friend (otherwise it can get confusing)
I wasn't looking forward to his class because of the poor ratings. But tbh it wasn't bad at all, I didn't even mind that he didn't use slides. He talks slow enough for you to write everything down and as long as you do the readings before class, the lectures are very easy and so are the exams. Was surprised at how easy the final was
Although all the material is in the textbook, he goes over 95% of it in lectures. If you can write good, fast notes and do well with auditory learning, take this class. I did not read a single page of the textbook on my own nor did I study more than 2 days all semester for this class. Lectures are rough at 8:30 AM but the class is not stressful.
Overall a pretty good professor - Does not have any course slides or notes, so just talks from the textbook/anecdotes during lectures. The textbook will be your best friend for sure. Midterm (40%) and Final (60%) were fair, but obviously heavy. Would stay away if you aren't into independent learning or keeping up with information yourself
If you have the choice, choose another professor. I had him pre-COVID, so he didn't even use Brightspace, and used no visual aids of any sort. His lectures were ramble-like and off-topic. Need to rely completely on your textbook and learn things on your own!
Loved this class with Maicher! He lectures with themes in mind and discusses them throughout. Everything on the exams were from class notes. Midterm was harder than the final but still fair. Some complained he's not very tech savvy/emails but I was in the in-person section which was great. You can tell he's passionate. Great guy, great lecturer.
Dr. Maicher was a funny and engaging lecturer. Lots of great discussions. The lectures aren't organized (no visual content whatsoever) but are easy to follow. Not the best for visual learners, but totally worth attending lectures. Never took philosophy before but found this course easy! Fair grading -- lets you debate the scheme if it seems unfair.
lectures were good but theres a LOT of reading to do. theres no slides so it's just own notes and the textbook. and he says he won't record lectures (he did but threatened it a lot). The grading is so-so, my tip would be think in POV cuz sometime the T/F or MC can be argued differently. Overall I didn't mind, but its not for everyone.
He doesn't do slides. Avoid this Prof at all costs.
Graded by only 2 tests which are almost entirely multiple choice/true or false. Course reading was very heavy, and the book was not readily available anywhere. No visual aids, no study guides, basically just read the book and hope you retain enough to pass. Nice enough guy, but I wouldn't retake this class.
There's no visual aid, I've had him twice and even last time bright space has been completely empty other than the syllabus. Though if you listen in class, go to them all, and take notes you'll be fine. He's an entertaining lecturer, relates content to real life and makes jokes along the way this makes him really easy to listen to.
The prof is clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject matter, and really wants to share his enthusiasm with his students. His rating is surprisingly low, but honestly if you just put in the minimal effort of showing up to class and taking notes you can achieve a decent grade.
The professor only gives lectures and does not provide any notes, not even a powerpoint with a few bullet points. The midterm average was really bad, a D. The midterm had random things that did not seem important and was hard to study for given no study guide or idea of what was important. The only good thing about this prof is he likes teaching.
No visual cue. Just textbook and your notes. The textbook is hard to get by, and if you lucky to find one, get ready to drop $120+ on it. Unprofessional. If you decide to show your enthusiasm you will be met with rather dogmatic and lack of curiosity. Only two exams, meaning you have no maneuver. Would rather get a bullet than attend his class.
doodoo prof. stuck in the past and has no concept of modern teaching. do not take a class with this prof unless you want to go back to a time pre-internet
not willing to hear any feedback on his teaching especially since his lectures are not catered to students who have learning disabilities. He does not post power points,or any lecture material you just sit there and hear him speak. If you answer any of his questions he is extremely condescending and is discouraging. Does not answer emails
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM! This Prof. is extremely rude and condescending towards students. He does absolutely NOTHING to help students who ask for it. He will NOT reply to your email. He puts a lot of blame on his students for his poor class averages but, my class had to beg him to give us guidelines on an assignment. AVOID IF POSSIBLE!!
if you have the choice don't pick him, you'll regret it. for a second year course, he's made it extremely difficult to learn and pass this course. doesn't post any lecture content/slides. expects you to figure it out by listening to him speak. he also talks a bit fast. doesn't answer emails. expects you to remember irrelevant facts for the midterm
I honestly expected to find a much better rating....he's so great. His class is fun/dynamic, his lectures are funny (dad jokes) and his cat is just comical. My class with him was virtual. Reading the textbook's important though, for the practice questions. He's straightforward and a superrrrr easy grader (at least the TAs). Take his class!!!!!
These ratings are outdated. He records his lectures, posts them, uses a whiteboard with a market to demonstrate his ideas and speaks slowly. He regularly asks if there are questions before moving forward. He loves talking about his days as a DJ LOL. He's super kind, pleaseeee don't let these other reviews scare you!!
I kid you not I read every single page of the textbook, attended every class with full notes, and received unbelievably low marks. It's insanely difficult to get high grades for such a beginner-level class. Good person though.
While there weren't any slides, Dr. Maicher made use of the classroom environment and would illustrate concepts on the chalkboard when necessary. The class is content heavy, but he conveys the important ideas very well. If you show up to class and take notes, as long as you review them before the midterm and the final, both should be easy to pass.
The lectures are simply him talking for over an hour. He would show up late daily and never used the whiteboard/chalkboard, never posted any notes online, nothing aside from talking for an hour straight.
Terrible prof AVOID. Late every day and loves arguing with students who ask valid questions.Requires $260 textbook which is hard to find and when found, expect to memorize philosophers, not the topics in the course description. Class is 40% midterm and 60% final and nothing online.Midterm was told to memorize 31 philosophers and was tested on none.
Avoid...
This is a slightly biased review as I am not a big fan of philosophy but had to take this class, there are no power-points, no bright space and the textbook is almost 200$ with no online version readily available. I found this class boring, and draining to go to. There are no assignments or quizzes only the midterm and the exam.
Do NOT take a class with this professor if you are a first-year student! There is so much content and you essentially have to teach it to yourself using the textbook. I'm sure some older students are able to achieve high grades in this class, but for first-years who are still getting used to university, this class will be a great source of stress.
His classes feel like a sermon in which he praises himself. He did not post a single thing online and tried to say it was because "school isn't supposed to be easy." No, it's not easy, but neither is being a prof, he just didn't want to put the effort in. He has a lot of contempt for students and talks about himself more than the class material.
Not having any slides is a little intimidating at first, but as long as you show up to lectures and take good notes you should have no problem. I barely even touched the textbook, he goes over everything you need to know in class. He's a very entertaining lecturer and there's a lot to be learned from his class.
Though he doesn't do lecture slides, he is very passionate about teaching. Show up lectures, taking notes, do the readings :)
I saw a lot of negative coments. But, to be honest, he is amazing. Attnedance is not mandatory, but I highly recommend to show up to the lectures and take notes. This course was a kind of like an introductory course of PHI, so if you are interested in PHI, it is definitely a good option to take this with him. Good luck with your finals!
his teaching style is not effective. it only works well for auditory listeners and he offers no other learning resources other then reading the textbook. the mark break down was made from 40% midterm and 60% final which allows for little error because there is no exam review.
If I could rate him a 0 I would. Terrible prof, always came late to class, brought his child a couple times, never had any brightspace slides. Only content to go off of for the exams was the textbook. He never replied to emails and was overall very unhelpful. Never taking another class with this prof, would have rathered take a summer course.
My favourite prof I have ever had. He is very knowledgeable and passionate. taking his class made me switch programs from psychology to philosophy he is a captivating lecturer and expects a lot from his students. No power point slides and no brighspace information but if you listen then you will be fine I do recommend getting the textbook.
Professor Maicher is rude, mean and acts like everyone is beneath him. He doesn't use lecture slides or post anything on brightspace. Maicher's lectures are unclear and if you ask questions he'll talk down to you and humiliate you in front of your peers. Save yourself the headache and rage of dealing with him, don't take his classes.
I am a firm believer professor Maicher is disliked by those who simply find the content of the courses tough. And that's not his fault. He is an amazing lecturer. Yes, no power points, but since when is that sound evidence for a prof being bad? If you do the work and pay attention, one of the best lecturers I've ever had.
A terrible teacher and an embarrassment to the university. I took this course out of interest and as a prerequisite. Little did I know that the teacher would be pompous, arrogant, and condescending to the class. Two exams, really?? The text took almost a month and a half to arrive, and there needed to be more guidance from this teacher.
Not a fan of this class because of the way it was taught. There were no lecture slides, no notes. When asked what was going to be on the final he said if he talked about it for a while. Had over 70 pages of notes that I needed to study for the final because he would put things that he briefly mention on the exams. Not a fan of his teaching style.
He's awful! His syllabus was one page and no lecture slides or notes. If you have ADHD and require accommodations run for your life. You will not get them. If you have a notetaker you may get out with a 50.
Worst prof I've ever had. He provides no resources (including no power points and no lecture slides!). All you have are the zoom meetings and the textbook, so if you want to learn something get ready to read! He expects a lot from his students but puts 0 effort in helping them succeed.
Professor Maicher is a captivating lecturer, but his teaching style can be challenging. No slides or online resources - you'll need to attend lectures, take notes, and read the textbook to do well. Luckily, unstuckstudy AI can help with efficient study prep.
While the lack of presentations may annoy a lot of people, Maicher clearly puts a lot of effort into his classes. You have to show up and do ALL of the assigned readings but for many of the harder philosophers he does an excellent job at breaking down their ideas so you can understand them. Overall a very passionate and underrated professor!
Awful prof. Doesn't use slides, 40% midterm 60% exam. We were supposed to have our midterm and he did not show up. He sent an email 35 minutes after the exam was supposed to start saying it was moved to our next class and did not offer an excuse. Instead he said your welcome for the extra day of studying. Stay away.
No slides? I-I-I think I'm gonna be sick 🤢. It's very simple: if actually learning something gives you the creeps then by all means do not take this class. If you want to be a big kid and learn and study philosophy, you will not regret this amazing prof.
No slides or other learning materials, all learning is solely lectures. Midterm and exam are the only way to score marks. I hated his teaching style in which he lectured for 1.5 hours (usually includes random rambling) his lectures feel very broad but his tests are very specific. Didn't enjoy the class but not impossible to do well
His lectures were very good, always informative and given in a very engaging way. But the class was graded based on only 2 exams.
Prof. Maicher is a good professor in that he takes broad philosophical concepts and tries to break them down into easier, digestible concepts. Sometimes he does it spot on, and other times you still need to chisel away to get to the meaning. I think there should be either a quiz or assignment to help offset the 40/60 midterm/exam weight.
Prof. Maicher is a nice guy but a bad PHI prof. He doesn't use any slides so lectures are just him reading notes or pages from an expensive mandatory book. The midterm marks were curved because almost everyone failed; the midterm had nothing to do with what was discussed in class. 1 midterm (40%), 1 exam (60%).
If you have the option to get out of taking this class, definitely escape asap. Maicher will make sure to will word the exams in a way that makes you question every answer you end up choosing. His teaching style consists of no slides or posted info therefore attending every class if a MUST. if you are stuck in this class resort to textbook!!
Prof Maisher is pretty chill and funny, but does not post any slides - the only thing he posted was the syllabus. Although attendance is not mandatory, you definitely need to show up to do well and keep in mind that you're only graded on 2 things: a midterm (40%) & the final (60%). Get the textbook only; the course pack is very unnecessary.
Terrible. Avoid!!!! Speaks to all of his students in a condescending manner. Many people did terrible on his midterms to which he went on a lecture explaining how he prides himself in his tough tests. Does not reply to emails. Had to visit him during his office hours 3 times and sent him 5 emails before he fixed the problem A MONTH later
I don't know why so many people gave him a bad review. I found his class to be very engaging, instructive and all around interesting. If you listen and take notes then you're pretty much good.
Sascha Maicher is one of the most captivating profs I have ever had the fortune of having. His lectures are amazing and I am so glad I was in his class. I have no idea why he has so many bad reviews, his tests were fair and as long as you did readings and listened in class everything was relatively easy to grasp.
If you are not a philosophy major do not take his courses. I enjoy taking philosophy but this was by far the worst philosophy course Ive been in. Must go to every class because he rarely repeats concepts more than once and will put things exam you do not expect. The material is simple but the way he teaches, makes everything extremely confusing.
He's a decent guy who is extremely knowledgeable, but his exams sometimes don't align with what was discussed in class. I'd avoid him altogether and would suggest taking this with someone else later on.
He doesn't use powerpoints or any sort of visual information. He doesn't upload anything online, not even you grades. If you miss a lecture then you are completely alone as there are no sources to help you catch up. There is a textbook, however, it is not enough as he adds information to the course that is not written down anywhere.
Whether you should take this prof. depends on your year. If you are in 1st or 2nd year, your grade won't count in your CGPA for grad school, so go ahead (only your last 20 courses count). The prof is good but difficult, and many people did poorly on the midterm. If 3rd or 4th year, take an easier phil. course. Definitely attend lectures.
Would not recommend taking any classes with him ESPECIALLY AS A FIRST YEAR STUDENT. His lectures were messy and made no sense. He doesn't use PowerPoint, making his lectures extremely difficult to follow along with. No quizzes or assignments meaning the midterm was worth 40% and final 60% of ENTIRE GRADE. Very easy to do poorly in his class.
I had him for PHI1104 and liked him. He's very engaging. You can tell he enjoys teaching this course. But you have to be present as he posts nothing online, and does not have slides in class. I found the exams fair, but the midterm & final were your whole mark so you had to do well on them. Overall if you go to class and take notes you will do well
yes he has no slides and posts nothing. it would have helped once in a while to post something online. But i promise yall, if you go to class and take notes it will be fine. he's very engaging and not boring for sure. the class is still hard, but you can definitely still pass. i didn't get the textbook and i got an A. just be ready to take notes.
He does not use any sort of slides and posts nothing online, which can make studying difficult, but his lectures are engaging and he's clearly very passionate. Only a midterm and a final, but they were fair and he is a very generous marker. Even if you all did was show up to the class and just listen and maybe skim the textbook, you'd be fine
This guy is clearly very into philosophy, but mainly himself. He grades the class on a 40 midterm - 60 final, and self proclaims that his class is "easy to pass, but impossible to do very well in." If this class is mandatory, take it with literally any other professor on the planet. This guy has to curve every test he does because everyone fails.
I enjoyed Prof Maicher. He was very entertaining and engaging, but was prone to rambling. He doesn't use any visual aids, opting to just stand in front of the class and speak about the topics. This format isn't for everyone; something to make note of if you rely on slides. Very gracious in terms of grading, giving many points for little information
Grades based only the mid-term and final exam. Pretty unclear about exam expectations but related closely to textbook and lectures. Some questions are intended to trick you. Overall, a decent professor but certainly not an easy A.
Awesome professor!! He made me add a minor in philosophy!
this guy rocks, i pick classes specifically taught by him. incredible lectures and always moving content. good dialogue. seems rare to have a prof who doesn't rely on awful slides to substitute for their mid teaching skills. if you show up to class, take notes, and do the readings you succeed. this shouldn't be too much to ask of a uni student.
Pick a god and pray.
Very difficult tests, yet very interesting lectures. You gotta study for this class hardcore to get a good grade, but if you can deal with the no slideshows and hard exams, then you're in for a fun time with his lectures.
This class is extremely hard. I studied for 2 weeks everyday 4 hours min for the midterm and barely scrapped a good grade. However, the class content is naturally hard as it's political philosophy so I don't think it was necessarily his fault. I think he needs to take control of his TAs better though! As a person very nice! Always wants to help:)
I wish I could rate him higher. His lectures were easily the best I've attended, and he is a really nice guy. The only thing is, there are no slides or posted notes and he has a final worth 50% and midterm 40%. His exams are insanely difficult. He puts very niche things on his exams so even if you study a lot it is hard to do good.
Amazing lecturer. The fact that he has no slides makes me concentrate more on what he said, and many of them are on the exams. That being said, it is a philosophy class so it is naturally hard, but he tried to make it as engaging as possible. I'm lucky that I got a very engaged TA who was always accessible, not the case for some others though.
this course is extremely difficult and the midterm is 40% and the final is 60%. he does not have power points and if you miss a class you miss an entire section of the textbook. honestly this class was the most stressful class I had all semester and if I could I would go back and drop the course.
I've had a terrible experience with this Professor, and I'm sure many people would agree with me. We didn't do any review for the Midterm as well as the Finals. Most of the class didn't show up the day after the Exams. Then the Professor steps in to say “I'm always here to help if you need it”. He never answered to any of my e-mails. 0 Guidance.
Prof Maicher is a very nice man and he made his lectures fairly engaging, but there's no powerpoints, a 40% midterm and 60% final, a textbook (newest version, so not available online), AND a course reader. long answer Qs were all lecture-based, but T/F and multiple choice Qs were niche details. I usually get 90+, but I don't think I did here...
