Great teacher!!
YOu never know what tis man is talking about. He doesn't explain anything that needs to be done.
nice guy ,the lectures were extremly boring though. i have never heard a english teacher say "uh" so many times in my life
Such a nice teacher!! I love the way he teaches! The best teacher I have ever had!!^^
very nice teacher but gets too much into the "mathematics" of english, instead of actually improving your writting. makes writting more difficult than it is should be.
The winner of the most boring teacher ever. His lectures will put you to sleep. Doesn't work at improving your writing, just goes over semantics.
He was a very nice teacher. He jsut needs to be a little more clear on what he's talking about. Just ask questions. He's very helpful. Overall a good teacher
Sasha is a good teacher, who really knows English grammar. If you are looking for the easiest class, do not take his one. However, he will teach you to write properly.
He is a very goog teacher.
Very nice guy. Pretty tough class. A decent amount of reading and several large papers, often with unclear prompts. However, Sasha is good at what he does and Im glad I took him. Mild accent.
the way he talks would put you to sleep. borring and not clear at all
He is a hard teacher to understand. He can't explain things very well. When you ask a question about what you have learned on that one topic he doesn't answer your question at all. He will give you a whole different answer that doesn't relate to your question that you have asked him. He is mean!
he is the worst english teacher. i do not reccomend this teacher to anyone! he is not clear with anything he says. horrible!
Too much work and don't give enough breaks. Don't take him, you will be sorry and would think bad on English.
His class can be hard at times, because his lectures are hard to turn into good notes for tests. The key with him is you have to take charge. Ask for practice exams before a test, and ask a lot of questions, before and after class, and you will have no problem in his class. He understands the rules of grammer, better than anyone.
Good Class, hard to understand with accent, and not really helpful when asking questions!
it was difficult trying to understand him. his lectures were boring and not to helpful. it was hard to take notes. hes not helpful and grades very hard. i would never take a class with him again. dont recommend him to anyone.
He has a strong accent and a very monotone voice, he seems to be bright, just not a good teacher. He didn't show up for our midterms and the book we read was absurd and was very philosophical with little relation to english or good writing. Having the 3 hours class on Friday morning wasn't a good idea.
He is very hard to understand and gives unclear answers to your questions. In order to do good in his class you have to ask questions after class and stand up for the grade you think you deserve. If you do he is willing to negotiate. This teacher knows his english but just doesn't know how to teach it.
This guy has got to be the worst teacher i have ever had. The whole class basicly dropped. He is impossible to understand. He is very un helpful. The book you have to read in the class is rediculous. The essays topics you have to write about are very unclear and to top all of that off he is a hard grader. DO NOT GET THIS TEACHER.

DONT SIGN UP FOR THIS GUY! HE'S REALLY REALLY HARD TO UNDERSTAND BECAUSE OF HIS ACCENT AND ALWAYS GOES OFF COURSE OF THE LECTURE OF THE DAY. HE HAS ABSOLUTELY NO PREPARATION FOR THE CLASS AT ALL.
I couldn't even stay in this class becasue it was so boring. He had us read a stupid book that we had to write about. He has a strong ascent and assigns papers without really talking about them.
Bad teacher!!! cant understand one word he says. The books for this class are terrible and dont make any sence. Very unclear paper topics and is not willing to help people at all.
Horrible teacher. I did not learn a thing in 14 weeks. Only 14 because that is the longest I could possibly deal with this guy. Learn English please before you decide to teach it in college.
This teacher was very difficult to understand. We read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and had to base all of our journal entries and our final paper on it. The class was incredibly boring. he helped me to write a little better, but only after I got a bad grade on an essay and asked him how to improve. Find another teacher.
Horrible teacher! You cant understand what's he's saying because of his accent. His daily lectures don't make sense DONT TAKE HIS CLASS!
i think he is a great teacher. he is very intelligent and he leads really good class discussions. he really wants to help you become a better writer
This class is boring. Essay topics are unclear. Not a very good teacher.
there's nothing wrong with his English. The classes are a little boring, but I never had problems understanding what I had to do in my essays. He's helpful, and he cares about his students.
Good teacher, took 120 over the summer, very fast paced. The essays (4) are all prompted (which no one in class liked so much) and the research paper felt a bit too long. 750 and 1000 for the first 4 and 3500 for research). Lectures can be interesting if you really want to learn the topics. Nice guy, worked around fam emergency in midwest.
I seriouely dont know where to start but this teacher is by far the worst teacher at grossmont college. If you are looking forward to succeed in life DONT take his class. He does not teach and not to mention does not follow his essay prompts.
This was the most unfair class I have ever taken. In class, all we did was talk politics, and his views were reflected in his essays, and book choice blowback The prompts seem to be designed to force you to agree with his views, those who disagree are at an unfair disadvantage. He has an accent that might be hard to understand, it didn’t bother me.
Very confusing lectures. Students never knew when test or homework was due.
Great teacher you just have to ask questions he really helped me improve my writing skills. I took his class over at Mesa and he couldn't have been a better teacher.
Not a great teacher teaches his whole class out of a printed booklet.Does not give a clear date when exmas or assignments are due, very hard to understand. His class is easy but he is not helpful.
I like him, he graded pretty easy too.
He's alright. I had him for the summer and I liked the books we hadf to read. His way of teaching isn't clear and think he could actually make sure his students understand his lecture before moving on.
my class started full and my the third week there was only 6 of us. He is very hard. and when it came to our final presentations i thought mine was pretty good and since only 6 of us stayed and stayed through we were all going to get pretty good grades, was i wrong! alot of writing but it is a 120 class, and the research paper is 12+ pages....
Absolutly terrible teacher. Contradicts himself on a daily basis, tells you to do one thing...but you have to do another. Very ANTI-AMERICAN to an insulting point. If you don't agree with his view, you are screwed. DO NOT TAKE.
Very hard to understand him. He as an accent and is very unclear about homework and assignments. could barely pay attention
probably the worst teacher at grossmont. class is boring.
He is very hard to understand, but if you follow his syllabus and do everything and turn it in on time, you do do great! Knowing your grammar is a big part to his class, which is why I did well. Do what you need to do and talk to him personally and you will succeed! Easy A if you do the minimal work!
I wish I ha read all the comments on here before. He is very biased in his teachings and very insulting in my opinion. I would have dropped his class the first week if I didn't have to stay because I have to be a full time student and all other English 120 classes are full. His accent isn't that hard to understand but he is unclear.
This is a good class for those who are interested in english beyond basic literature. We get to delve into the political aspects and tie that into english as a whole. Be prepared for the work, but who goes to school to be lazy? And I loooove his accent!
Sasha's great. It's hard for me to understand why he's received so many poor ratings. He is incredibly forgiving and understanding if you have any personal issues with completing your assignments. The assigned reading was engrossing. The "Very ANTI-AMERICAN to an insulting point" comment below was hilarious.
He has a bad accent and a lot of his work is unclear, probably because he is russian and english is not his first language. He does a lot of busy work, so this class is not for you if you are lazy or just want an easy A. The teacher is understanding; however, I would not suggest this class to anyone.
I would not suggest this professor. He teaches us 1st grade work and gives college level test. He did not follow his syllabus, we had a month worth of stuff left to go over come final date. he's russian so his accent is beautiful! but doesn't make a great english teacher. Great person though!
Nice guy but doesn't teach too well and doesn't grade easy! Lots of quizzes.
Very helpful and nice teacher. He really encourages his students to have a critical attitude to the political and economic situation.
Very nice guy, but I learned nothing regarding English. I learned lots about how corrupt my government is and how much I don't know about it. But I'm wondering why this Isn't a polysci class. Nice guy again but didn't learn any English .
Kaluzski is a very caring man who wants only to help his students become better writers. Close minded individuals looking for an easy grade will find this class most difficult. However if you have an open mind with an ambition to improve your rhetorical analysis skills then you will find this class most rewarding.
Great Instructor
Started out with a full class. After midterm, there was only 13 people left. Does not go over class material well. Lots of busy work that he does not explain. Two books, 4 essays required, 2 in class essays, and 1 final 10 page essay. All class lecture is about political science. I didn't learn much English but learned how corrupt my gov. is.
I really like English. But, this class was terrible. Unless you enjoy talking about the government, then go for it. The teacher is terrible at explaining the homework and in class work. Not worth it.
Professor Kaluzhski is an excellent teacher. He has a pretty heavy Russian accent, but he speaks and teaches English magnificently. He teaches this class as if it's a political science class, so be prepared to critically think about political topics. 3 essays, 3 in class writes, 1 research project; achievable A.
this class is rigorous. bottom line. You will have homework every day and there is a lot. You spend a lot of time on argumentation and the professor claims to be independent but he is not Every one of your assignments will have a heavy liberal bias. If you are a hardcore liberal and enjoy doing copious amounts of homework and essays take this class
Kaluzhski's class is incredibly challenging. however, If you're willing to put in the time and effort, you will be exceptionally prepared for higher level classes
If you want to learn to think outside the box, this is the class to take. It has changed my life!
Easy class, a lot of work once in awhile.
I personally don't think he makes a great English professor he would be awesome for a political science person or government something like that. We are about 8 weeks in now there were 30 something students at the beginning now there are around 10. His lectures are all mediapolitical not much English and he has strong Russian accent.
Kaluzhski's class isn't necessarily tough but there are certainly times throughout the semester where the work will seem to pile up. You will write three essays, two in class essays, a timed essay for the final, and a final paper. I am definitely improved as a writer because of his class. This isn't an easy A but its absolutely doable.
Prof K was by far the most confusing teacher I have had at Mesa. He assigns super long papers, doesn't even clarify what he wants, and then gives you a week to finish the paper! His accent is cool, but he is somewhat hard to understand. Don't get me wrong, he's a really nice person, just a terrible professor. Would not recommend taking his class.
This is a political science class disguised as an English class. You will hear his personal opinion everyday. Extremely unclear in what he wants for essayshomework. Staunch liberal and will definitely let you know it.
Best professor I ever had!
An eye-opening course! Thank you professor!
This man barely speaks English, and he's teaching an English class. Do not take him. I'd rather have Shrek as my professor.
my advice to anyone that is thinking of taking this class, is don't. it was really hard mainly because it's like a political science class. some of the essays assigned are really hard to find the articles on that you need for evidence and he was more than willing to help but his intentions were better than his actual help.
Although the readings were challenging and outside the box (we discussed the mass media propaganda in the US), they helped to grasp some of the issues we face these days with student debt, for example. Lots of options for the research project. Always willing to meet in his office when needed. Recommended.
I took Prof. K's class this spring. The class was great; my writing has improved a lot. The trick is he allows to revise your essays and grades each anew! In between revisions, the professor gives detailed feedback and shows the areas to revise. Always available for office advisory. Highly recommend.
Good reading selections make you think. This professor helps a lot with essay planning and outlining. which makes writing much easier. I really enjoyed his class.
Very good class. My writing was not stellar, but this prof offers lots of help, so I've learned quite a bit. It actually helped me writing papers for my other classes. Great choice!
Great class, a very caring and knowledgeable teacher--my writing has gone way up!
I did enjoy Prof. Kaluzhski's writing class. The texts were straightforward and motivational, which made responding to them easier than it looked in the prompt. Most important still is that my college writing got much better. Thank you, prof!
I really enjoyed Prof. Kaluzhski's class. Assignments were not hard to read and respond to as most of them related to everyday life. Also, this professor allows his students to revise their graded essays for a higher grade--that made a lot of difference in my writing confidence and overall success.
The class was eye-opening; we read current authors discussing real matters and responding to them. As a writer, I feel more confident thanks to this instructor.
It was my last English class before transfer, and it helped my writing most compared to all previous courses. Thanks!
It was a very good class: great teacher, great group, interesting discussions. All these helped a lot with writing tasks!
It's a college class so be prepared to read and do work. Real eye opener. He really cares about his students and loves what he does.
Seemed like a hard Prof. in the beginning, but once he gets familiar with the students, he's very friendly and helpful. His blackboard is confusing as hell tho. it has dates from 2013 and he takes a while to update grades. I did T/Th and he always assigns the heaviest homework on tues, due on thurs. The class is hard, but also a kind of easy A.
*Disclaimer: I am one of those people who actually take college classes to learn and not just hope for the easy grade. If that's you, my opinion may not be very useful to you.* This was not an easy class, but the material uses to write about is EXACTLY why you are in college. Learn something about what's going on in the world and understand it!
It was a terrific class. Thank you, Prof. K!
Enjoyed his class. Also his office time. Thank you, professor!
This professor really helped me improve my writing. I'm much more confident now.
The best thing about this professor is that he is available for help in and outside class. That really made a difference in my case. Thank you!
Great class, and this instructor can be really funny.
Great class!
Prompts arent clear. TONS of homework. told class it would be about 6 hours of homework per WEEK. more like 6 hours per assignment. His voice sounds like a tape recording of a 18th century book. each assignment has 6-8 parts that could be an assignment on their own. hardest class this semester. Nice person difficult professor.
Basically in this course you are given the tools and information to learn but you arent exactly directly taught anything. Hardest class ive taken workload wise but the assignments are just for credit. The essays are for a grade and difficult to write The prompt for the first essay is mostly quotes from sources we never discussed so it was V hard:(
Good teacher and fair grader.
Enjoyed in class discussions and talks after class.
Good hot topics--love it!
I really liked this class; it was an eye-opener. The professor was accessible and very helpful (English is not my mother tongue).
Thank you for teaching me the nuts and bolts of essay writing.
This professor encourages outside-the-box thinking. I liked that.
I have learned so much over the last fall--amazing class. Thank you!
When he gives extra credit in the beginning of the year, make sure to take it because he grades hard. He has a Russian accent but after a few weeks you get used to it. His lectures are pretty boring but other than that he is pretty cool. You don't have to worry too much about being late to his class. There are three papers; (2) 5 pages, (1) 10 page
This professor relates his assignments that make sense. I also recommend seeing him during his office hours; he helps a lot! I appreciate that.
My favorite part was our discussions in groups and editing papers together with other class mates. I have learned a lot! Thanks.
This class was an eye-opener, thanks!
Great class. Good topics to write about.
Really loved his class.
Easy class as long as you work hard and do all the assignments. I wouldn't say that class is mandatory because most days he reads off PowerPoints that is posted on the websites, which you can do at home. Very nice man who cares about your grade and wants you to pass.
Doing the essays are essential for getting a decent grade. The class structure starts very organized but by the end of the semester due dates & homework assignments were very unclear. Attending class is not necessary most of the time & lectures were the worst part of the whole class. Reads off of a powerpoint & goes off on unrelated tangents.
He really cares about the students and their improvement on their work.
His lecture are so very boring,he gives a lot of homework due twice a week. And 3 essays, two of them 5 pages and the other 10. He is very unclear to what he expects you to write. The essays determine your grade not the homework but it is also necessary to do the homework. He is a great guy but not a good professor.
He started out with a full class and people started dropping his class and only had 10 people left. I don't recommend this class unless you want to be in a cold, boring, and hard class with lots of homework.
He is a great person, however he is not a good professor for English 120, maybe for Polysci hed be good. His class is VERY difficult and lecture is boring. I would especially not recommend this class for fresh out of HS college students, its very overwhelming and a lot to take on for just one class.
He assigns reasonable amount of homework which are very useful as the class proceeds. He takes his time with his lectures but he emphasizes clearly what he wants. It's not an easy A but you will learn how to articulate your thoughts thoroughly in an organized academic essay. As an ESL student I recommend you all not to take classes for an easy A!
Do not take him for your English class. Going to class is literally worthless as the whole time he will go on and on about how corrupt the mass media is, and does not teach anything useful to your writing. About halfway through the semester he stopped grading anything. My friend did not even do the final and still finished with a B, do not take
Very intelligent professor. I really enjoyed the class.
Hes a very nice man and lovely to talk to. But he definitely is lacking in the teaching aspect. Doesnt really grade anything aside from the essays. Our current weighted grade is only 46% and our essays are set as 0% of our grade? He takes a month to grade each essay you write. He also just reads directly off a Slide and then uploads it online.
Nice man to talk to, but his teaching criteria needs a little bit of work. It was a bit confusing to me to know what to improve on with my essays as time went by. There was no time to fully rewrite your first essay because the next one was already coming up. He only talks about how corrupt mass media is, but overall, it is a last resort class.
Nice guy but puts a lot of unnecessary stuff in the hw assignment instructions. It took mr an average of 6hrs a day just to do one assignment.
I recommend to sit up close during the lectures due to his soft voice and slight accent. His powerpoint presentations are displayed in small text so back row can't see, although they're posted on canvas. He is super caring about your education if you care as well, he can't force you to write but he inspires creative conversations. GO2 OFFICE HOURS!
Gives too much homework, my engl 124 professor did not give that much homework like Kaluzhski, also he makes you read Brave New World which we have not taken any quizzes on it. It was a waste of time to try and read the book. If you are fresh out of hs, do not take his class, dont make the same mistake i did a year ago.
I took this class during the COVID-19 pandemic and it was a mess. The instructor didn't seem to fully understand how to make this class work online. Assignment would be due at midnight but not available and when I would reach out for help I would never get a response. Grading was very far behind so didn't know if I would pass or not so I dropped
Doesnt get back to students on time ever, doesnt accept late work even if its his fault.
Kaluzhski is an inspirational prof who cares for his students. He runs a fair course but there was only one issue I had with it. He didn't grade most things until the end of the semester, so you didn't know where you stood in his class. Half the class dropped him. I wouldn't suggest this course to people who don't have an interest in English.
Although not happy with my grade, I still learned so much from this class. This was the first course that changed my world view on things. You won't regret taking it.
We had a decent amount of students in his class in the beginning, but then people dropped because essays were hard and he didnt grade hw all semester. I managed to get my A, but I had to really work for it. Lectures were boring too, he would just read off his powerpoints, which all students could have done outside of class. Dont take him please!
This class was online and asynchronous. There was a lot of reading and writing about the reading as well as annotating. I expected nothing less, but personally didnt enjoy the book we were assigned and wished it was something else. Professor is helpful when you have questions and doesnt grade too harshly but still makes you work for it.
He is a great teacher, always answered questions. Do the work and easy grade Love this teacher!
Professor Kaluzhski is not the best at explaining a topic and generally gives longwinded answers. An upside though the course incorporated important information that is applicable to real life. This class required a lot of heavy reading. I would not recommend this class if you want to be better at writing, but only for learning new topics.
The homework he assigned took hours to complete. His lectures were just 75 minutes of him reading off his powerpoint slides. He did not grade the hw until late in the semester. I do not recommend him for English 120.
The course was focused on political extremism. Mentally exhausting, lots of reading & work. Homework was not graded until very late in the course. Supposed to have individual zoom meetings to review our first essay but it kept getting pushed back. never happened. Did not get feedback from him about my writing until the final paper was due
Literally the worse professor I've ever taken. There was an error in the gradebook that he didn't fix until 2 weeks after I emailed him. Waits till the last day of the instruction to grade everything. Extremely tough grader and insulted my paper and refused to read it because I wrote pass the word limit. RUN. He's obsessed with political extremism
Interesting conversation during the lectures, but it often seemed unrelated to the writing tasks at hand. Feedback stopped in the second half of the semester, and I just submitted things without getting a lot of grades back. Eventually, the class ended, and I did great, but I have no idea how I specifically did on individual assignments.
Highly intelligent and knowledgeable professor. Great learning experience. Thank you!
Love this professor. Eyes opening experience.
Brilliant mind! Very interesting topic to discuss. Learned a lot from this professor. Thanks!
Stay away, it's not worth it! Run away while you still can! No grades all term, I didn't get final grade till 4 days after grade deadline. Very Anti-American and nothing he talked about was relevant to the assignments. If you have no other options, it's doable, but get ready to hate yourself.
The class is just him reading off of slides for two hours. There is lots of reading, easy homework, and no grade system, so if you do all your work, you'll get an A. I personally can't learn just from the slides.
Challenging class with heavy workload, but professor is knowledgeable. Use Unstuck ai and other study tools to manage the workload. Worthy learning experience.
This class was awful. He assigned insane amount of homework (like wants a 2 page analysis done in 12 hrs). He pushes his political beliefs a little too much for me. He is also AWFUL at explaining what is required in papers/homework. Absolutely no way to have a part time job and take this class, let alone other classes. He is a nice guy tho
