She's an OK as a T.A., labs are pretty boring/useless, you learn everything from the book. She does weekly notebook checks and quizzes, so make sure to read up on the chapters your doing and the following ones.
Great teacher! Love her lectures! Really cares for the students' well-being and success.
Although I can only speak from the QBIC program I can say she is very caring about her students' success and is very approachable. However, reading the book is essential for success. Quizzes are usually on a weekly basis and the tests contain some questions that are awkwardly worded. She is one of the best professors you will meet at FIU.
I'm part of QBIC program and I found her to be a total sweetheart. Know's most of her stuff. Test questions are kind of difficult to understand (english isn't her first language) but she'll help you understand them if you ask. Loves answering questions, really cares about how you're doing and will help you out if you're always in class/listening.
DA BOMB. She is an amazing teacher, a true asset to FIU's QBIC program.
Nice lady, but very confusing and unclear about a lot of concepts. She expects that chapters are read before lecture...so lectures are pretty useless besides the iclicker for extra credit. You basically teach yourself so you'll be married to your book. I don't like how she talks as if we are all practicing biologists. Study hard or fail.
Her tests are impossible. This is not medical school this is BIo 1. She expects you to know information that is unreachable. Her tests are pure application questions. Yes i did study and go to class and to no avail. Do not take her
This professor is really sweet and cares about her students' understanding of the content. She's very open to questions, but compared to the other Biology professors she's very fast, so it's easy to get left behind if you don't read or study enough. The questions on the test are application questions; if you don't read the book, you will fail.
she genuinely cares for her students and she wants you to pass. class is hard but just a reminder alot of the comments here are from freshman who still havent figured a study habit. biology is not easy but if you read and attend lecture you will pass. she explains things as best as she can and answers questions. she gives tons of extra credit
She doesn't want you to just memorize the material for tests, but to actually understand the concepts. She does give a lot of extra credit opportunities, she has a lot of clickers questions too. She has 4 exams which accounts for 90% of your grade and weekly quizzes that are 10%. The questions on her exams are more of "apply" questions.
Great teacher. Study hard, read the book, come to class and you'll do great. Stop complaining and start thinking critically -- you're not in highschool anymore.
She is an extremely nice professor, super caring and very down to earth. Attendance isnt mandatory but you can gain up to 25 iClicker point which help on exams. 4 exams and a final. Her exams are very difficult and some of the questions are confusing, there is so much application involved. You can study for hours and still fail her exams.
Professor Gavassa is wonderful! She has a true interest in what she teaches and is great at teaching it! This isn't an easy subject, but she is helpful and loves answering questions. Read the book and attend class. The exams test your ability to apply the concepts you've learned, but aren't impossible! Overall great! Take her :)
Professor Gavassa is an amazing biology teacher. Her understanding of the subject is very large, and she is always willing to help. her exams are based on her power points, through a section called the learning objectives, and those answers can be found in the textbook. So long as you exert ample study time for the subject, you are sure to pass.
Terrible to take online.... Terriblee do not take her online. She has no asset or help to an online course. She makes it so hard to take online. Ridiculous. No PLTL.
Extraordinary professore, she explains very well and connects the dots for you, so that you understand and not just memorize. Attendance is not mandatory but I highly recommend it because it will help you understand the material since she explains it very well and simplifies it. Very helpful in her office hours as well. I highly recommend her.
Great class, attending lecture just reinforces understanding of concepts but isn't mandatory (recommended because of extra credit clicker questions) MAKE SURE YOU READ THE BOOK, questions are focused on the book, it was pretty annoying but besides that great class
I do not recommend this professor to anyone who is not dedicated to attending every class and spending all your free time reading the textbook. Her lectures and power points come directly from the book... word for word. She does give in class extra credit and replaces final with PLTL grade. This class is not for slackers.
Took Dr. Gavassa for Gen Bio 1 online. I highly recommend her. She is very helpful and puts you and your grade first. There is a quiz and a homework assignment due every week. There are 2 online exams and a midterm plus final that you take on campus. She has a lot of extra credit opportunities too.
This lady is ridiculous, her class is hard, its as if she doesn't understand that we take other classes. Her exams are hard (5 of them). Plus she does not replace your final with your PLTL anymore, the quizzes are not that bad. You learn more from reading alone because with her accent the mic she walks around with its hard to understand. Good luck
This class is ridiculous. I took the new hybrid course that they wanted to test out this semester, all i have to say is DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! if you have the option to take another gen bio 1 class, DO!!!! the professor is nice, but doesn't help much and it's hard to understand her through the mic in such a big class & THE TEST ARE IMPOSSIBLE.
Would never take her class again. She is by far the least helpful teacher I've ever had because she doesn't even answer questions in class. When you ask her questions, she replies to you with a question. This hybrid course at FIU is a horrible idea and everyone should definitely avoid her class unless you want to marry your textbook!
(Hybrid). She's VERY nice and willing to help. Not the "best" professor but she provides a lot of resources and opportunities so that you can get a clear understanding of everything. Her main motto is that "you can't learn unless you fail," so she gave us a redemption for every exam. I really recommend her as long as you can mostly teach yourself.
Hybrid course. Her class is hard, but not impossible, no textbookno passing grade. If you want an easy grade do not take her, although her class difficult it encourages you to actually read the textbook, if you really want to learn i recommend her because it will help you for future classes.
I took her hybrid course which was hard but a passing grade is possible. The team quizzes confused me so I stopped paying attention and did better by studying the learning objectives she posted. PLTL helped a lottttt.
I took her this year online and the work online was pretty easy and definitely doable but her in class exams dropped me from an A to a C. She is incredibly tough and her questions are out of this world my GPA plummeted
Professor Gavassa exceeds when it comes to helping her students. She responds back to emails accordingly. I took her hybrid class and it was tough. This is because the info is self taught. There are no lectures. Don't take her if you don't plan to read the text & to participate in group activities. You must put in the effort to earn a high grade.
DO NOT!!!!! Worst class I've taken so far!!!! Don't even bother on using the study guides!! or the important points that she tries to reinforce. They are worthless! If you take her, you will do better if you read the entire book and learn every word and concept to kind of do good at her tests. Nothing else will help you!!! READ! she confuses you!
She is honestly a horrible teacher. She does not teach and expects you to know things that you have to "learn" through youtube videos. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!! test are horrible, no extra credit, PLTL will not help. Take Pitzer if you can. worst teacher I've had.
Horrible professor does not teach at all her test are super hard, i took her the first time in class and i had to drop i made the mistake of taking her online because she was the only one available and her class was horrible!
Only meet once a week & about 20 minutes were for lecture & rest of time was doing confusing group activities. Tests are hard & study guides are useless. Online hw (typically 20-30 questions) & quizzes every week. Even if you do PLTL you still have to take the final. Had to drop bc I knew class would crash my GPA. Overall, I do NOT recommend her.
I do not think Gavassa is a bad professor. I believe it is easy to dislike her due to the amount of studying she requires, but she is always willing to help if you ask her to. I started the semester with a 70, as the semester is ending I now have a 92. It is possible to get a good grade, you have to put in the work, study and most importantly READ
This class is a HYBRID class. That means that prior knowledge WILL help you and using the textbook and videos is necessary. If you are dependent on a teacher to lecture you, this class is NOT for you. A hybrid class is NOT a lecture. She will go over material but not in detail. MAKE SURE TO GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS. She is always willing to help you.
2 Online exams, Midterm and Final. Take PLTL, TLC and PASS for extra credit. Before midterm and final take multiple practice exams.
I took the hybrid course of BSC 1010 on Spring 2015 and she was really good. She teaches their students not only for this subject but for a future professional life. I gotta say my major is CS and I took this course because my track requires 2 sciences and I end up enjoying learning biology even though I hate it before.
I was in a hybrid course for Bio 1 I essentially had to teach myself. You're supposed to go over all the material before you get to class and she goes over it again(poorly) in class. She honestly seems like a nice woman and she does give everyone ALOT of extra credit so you'll come out with a decent grade probably but if you want good lecture, pass
I was taking Hybrid course and we basically have to teach each other when it was class time. There are videos before the class but some are pointless. If one person in the group is teaching the rest of the other people in the group and they're wrong you won't know if you're wrong or right. I wouldn't take her class if you can't teach yourself.
Took her hybrid class & liked it. It's half online & all the lectures and videos are there whenever you need them. You only go to class once a week and you have your own group. You take an individual quiz & a group quiz in class & 1 quiz on blackboard @ every week. You just have to watch the videos & pay attention to learning objectives to do well.
I had Dr. Gavassa for a hybrid class and I enjoyed it. I would recommend taking her if you are the kind of person that likes to take learning into your own hands. All of the lectures were online, none in class. Tests in her class were extremely easy if you put the time into the videos. If you take her, keep an open mind, you'll love her in the end.
This class you are basically on your own. it is pretty difficult. her test are NOT easy. you can know the material very well and still fail. i dont recomend taking it unless you like learning everything on your own. Go to her office hours, take PLTL and GO TO CLASS. watch her videos many times. she is pretty fair but you will work you butt off.
I had her for biology lab. She is not good at explaining at all. Expect to never understand what she is talking about. She is nice but monotone, gets upset when you ask her to explain again .She makes your life complicated specially for a 1 credit class and the lab report . If you do not understand her class forget about passing her tests.
I actually learned so much from this class. Mostly because I had to reach each chapter and teach myself to be able to pass. She does not give lectures, all of the "lectures" are online and you have to watch them before class. Do not take if youre not ready to do everything on your own. She doesnt help much.. but the LAs are extremely helpful.
be prepared to teach yourself. I learned a lot of from this class especially with my group. gavassa is really nice and gives a lot of extra credit. just worship your book do the quizzes and you'll be fine. theres been students that barely passed exams and they passed the class with a B so honestly if you fail you're an idiot
Online class, she's very nice, 10 quizzes (pretty easy), two online exams, a midterm and final, 10 group assignments (not difficult since everyone basically helps each other out) . I only passed the first exam (100%) and the rest I failed. Her test are NOT easy. She gives a lot of extra credit, i would've gotten a C without it. I got a B.
The profess does not lecture in class. Instead the class is learn on your own type of class. She does not explain the material very well. But, the class requires work, and bio is not an easy subject. Trust me, this is a class you want to take. She gives a lot of extra credit. And, you will get a good grade and the best part you'll learn so much!!!
Awesome class. She doesn't lecture, but rather encourages that students work in groups to apply the knowledge we learn from the book, and online lectures she puts on blackboard. She always walks around the class to help students, and provides all the essential information necessary for the test. I would definitely recommend her hybrid course.
I loved the hybrid class. My group was awesome and my TA was awesome as well. She gives lots of extra-credit, quizzes, tests, and homework. However, if you are not very into bio, and/or you dont like to study by yourself, take another class, a lecture one.
If you aren't willing to put in the work, you won't pass - take lecture if you can't commit. Expect to be married to the textbook as the class (with mandatory attendance) is not going to help you. Getting an A is easy if you watch the videos and follow the chapters she assigns every week. PLTL is the best extra credit you can ask for. Take it.
Great class. Goes super in depth and thoroughly covers the material but somehow it is totally easy to understand. Havent taken a science class since high school (business major) but found this to be my most intellectually enjoyable classes and got a 95 loved having the videos online for reference and review, would 10/10 take another hybrid class.
Bio is no joke but I really loved the material. took this during Summer C and there was loads of work non-stop each week: 1-6 questions to answer depends on your choice, a quiz and Learning objectives you should have done optionally by each week due before the exam. Test are very detailed questions. The video she gives are really good.
I had her for bio 1, it was a hybrid class and i loved it. She really cares that you understand. The active learning was good, really makes you learn in depth instead of memorizing, Best class ive taken so far. If she thought bio 2 i would taken it. Ive taken several hybrid courses after this experience .
I had her for Gen Bio 1 hybrid, so it involves lots of reading to be done on your own, be ready to teach yourself. When the class meets there's always quizzes and hope your group and LA are friendly.
Do not take. Class is only useful if you attend. As previously stated its mostly yourself doing the work, the videos really don't help, her tests are extremely difficult
She does not teach you anything since its such a big class and since its a hybrid. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER YOU WILL REGRET IT!
I am already dropping this class with a DR grade. Maybe she's not a bad professor, I just would have known if she would have actually teach. Even if you take PLTL you need to take the final exam. I took the hybrid course and every class there was a quiz and no lecture, if was more like a quick review. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS it will ruin your gpa!!
This professor is a bit confusing, she is a great instructor and I feel she could be great as a lecturer but she teaches hybrid and has her LAs do all the teaching, She is super caring and will help you at any chance she can. However, her exams are incredibly difficult. Never a straightforward question and all her questions are tricky and LONG.
She is extremely confusing in all her lectures. I do not think she knows what she is doing and her tests are designed to make one fail. Do not recommend especially as a hybrid course
Do not take this class if you don't want to teach yourself. She does not lecture at all. You learn by reading the book and watching her videos, which are very confusing. All you do in class are team activities and quizzes. LAs are not the best and sometimes they don't even know the answer to your questions. Would not take this class again.
I had her for hybrid. Her lectures were online, and in class we just took quizzes and discussed hw. If you wanna do well you have to read the book, her lectures are overviews. You will be teaching yourself,so if you dont have the time then dont take her. She gives some EC and sometimes allows you to redo test questions.
Many people are complaining about how much work they had to do in the class yet they received an A or a B. It takes work and time to learn and apply the material. Lectures are fine but you are not learning if you are just listening. I took seven classes and ace all of them. Time was not an issue. If you put in the effort you will succeed.
A lot of people are complaining about this class being too difficult or that the professor gives out too many quizzes. The point of this hybrid class is to give you the skills to teach yourself when your future professors won't. You don't even have to touch the book for this class. As long as you watch her videos and take notes, you'll get an A.
Professor Gavassa was the most helpful and caring professor I have ever come by. She is always available to help her students in and out of class. Watch all the online videos before class and take good notes and you'll do fine on the in class quizzes and exams. The class is structured so that you depend on your group for a big part of your grade.
Professor gavassa was amazing . She truly does her best to help you out as much as possible and prepare you for the test . Although the hybrid style is hard at first to get the hang off , after the first test you understand what you need to do in order to excel in the class . The TA's are super helpful . She gives extra credit and is super nice !
The hybrid class can be challenging at first but once you get the hang of it you will be fine. You don't even need the textbook, just watch and understand Dr. Gavassa's videos. The exams are very important, but she gives a lot of extra credit oppurtunities which really help in the end. Take PLTL!!!!
Great teacher! She has a lot of tests, but they are completely based on her lecture videos. As long as you watch the videos and take notes you should be fine.
Didn't like it because I actually like having a professor teach you the content. There was no lecture at all (because it is a hybrid course). However, she is really nce and helpful, if you are good at teaching yourself and like online videos she is the right professor for you. Otherwise look for a lecture.
Not one of the easiest classes i've taken but I definitely enjoyed it. Most of the learning happens on your own at home through videos and homework, as well as through team-based activities in class. Not a good choice though if you need a professor who will teach you all the material through in-class lectures.
Easy class. Just look at the videos that she posts online and always keep the in-class assessments with the correct answers to reference later for studying. She does a good job of explaining concepts and gives plenty of extra-credit opportunities. Very kind professor.
I took this class in the hybrid form. I do not recommend this class in the hybrid form if you're a person who learns through lectures because you're learning on your own in this class. Study the in-class quizzes and learning objectives. Attend class and PLTL. Take all extra credit opportunities given to you. Take thorough notes. Apply yourself.
DONT TAKE ONLINE CLASS WITH HER. 2 QUIZZES ARE WEEK, 2 CHAPTERS A WEEK, AND A DISCUSSION BOARD. VERY DIFFCULT
I took Sat for gen bio 1 hybrid & 2 online. She is very caring really wants to help but her exams arent the easiest. She gives insane amounts of EC so TAKE IT it brought my grade up from a C to an A. Its hard but you learn a lot. I suggest reading the chapters and taking notes on a cheat sheet which is allowed for exams. Stay on top of the work
i took Gavassa in a hybrid course, so we only met once a week. majority of the grading is things done in class and exams. If you don't want to read the textbook she uploads videos about the chapter so you can watch before class since she doesn't lecture in class, you'll just talk within your group. You can pass by just watching the videos.
Took her for hybrid class. It's hybrid so she only reviews any questions you may have, she does not teach. AKA don't sign up for the hybrid if you're not willing to read the textbook. Exams are straight out of the textbook, you can use a cheat sheet for exams. She's super accessible and wiling to help. LA's help a ton. TONS of extra credit in class
This class was amazing and got me passionate about biology! I really didn't think I was going to make it through this class, but if you reserve about 5-8 hours for this class, you'll be fine. You can pass just by watching the videos alone. Take PLTL. Do the cheat sheets before every exam. Take! Take! Take!
Man, I love this lady. She's an angel. She may not be one of the easiest Bio professors, I'm 100% sure you can find one less tougher, but she really navigates you to success.
Don't take her hybrid class unless you want to dedicate 20 extra hours a week. Mandatory 1 hour peer learning sessions once a week, writing 6 pages of questions per week, (long) online assessments every week, weekly videos (avg 7 videos, 5-10min long), 1 hour class lecture, and then a follow up assignment, hard exams. Steer clear.
Gavassa is an amazing teacher, easy A... if you study. If you go to her office hours and show her you are willing to work she really helps you out. I love her, she is really helpful and doesn't hesitate. Take her if you want to learn biology in a different and fun way.
Prof Gavassa is amazing at her job. I actually believe the way she runs her class needs to be conducted on a national level. She wants everyone to do her best, and her class encourages learning. I would extremely recommend her hybrid class over any lecture hall class, ESPECIALLY BIO MAJORS. If you want to go anywhere with Biology, take her.
DR. Gavassa is a wonderful professor! She's very sweet and gives a lot of extra credit to pass without the extra credit I would have gotten a C but I received a B+ due to the extra credit! definitely would take her again!!
Gavassa is absolutely wonderful! I took her online class and I'm lucky I did. There are many factors that go into your overall grade so receiving an A is more than possible. You must complete homeworks, quizzes, discussions, and once in a while she will provide extra credit. She's extremely caring and understanding, this was a great class!
I took her for a hybrid class. Overall, we did a lot of MasteringBiology work which wasn't too bad since it can all be found on quizlet. All the learning had to be done outside of the classrooms. The LAs don't really check the homework and her tests are hard but she curves your final grade because somehow I had a low B and ended up with an A
I love that this class is available online. There is a lot of components that go into your overall grade: discussions, assignments, tests, quizzes, extra credit, PLTL. Which you can benefit from. I love that she included videos for the lessons. I prefer listening & watching interesting videos when it comes to biology.
This class was harder than I expected and at the beginning I was frustrated but by the early end of the semester I learned a lot about Biology. She is application heavy and for the tests (mid term, final) which are proctored, you can use a note card which is helpful. I would take this course again because I actually learned the content. Work hard!!!
Dont take her class unless youre already inclined in Biology. She cares about her students and wants them to pass only if theyre willing to dedicate like 15 hours a week to the class. ONLINE. rediculous how many things she requires. Cant google questions at all. Emailed her several times bc of my job. Online was more like hybrid.
Hybrid: learning is done on your own and class is for"active learning" with your peers. People that didn't care made this aspect of the class a waste. However, my LA was phenomenal and a few students in my group were resources. Her tests go beyond basic knowledge and require application. Group final. PLTL and extra credit helped me get an A.
Was a hybrid/flipped class, which means lots of learning on your own time. I did actually learn the material & she's nice, but you gotta work for it. Attendance is basically mandatory because of weekly quizzes, and if you end up with a terrible group, it can make the experience bad. If you like bio and put effort she can be a decent choice
The class was a lot harder than I anticipated. The fact that PLTL is a required portion is annoying but there are other ways to make it up. The content itself wasnt difficult, you just have to be very careful with her wording when it comes to tests/quizzes. she also gives a good amount of opportunities for extra credit. A bit rude and sarcastic
This class had a lot of quizzes, discussions, mastering biology due every week. There was also tests, a midterm and final exam. The discussions were lengthy and the mastering biology contained a lot of questions. The class itself was not difficult but you would definitely need to put in extra time. There is an opportunity to do well and get an A.
Too much work not enough time in the day. She gives way too many assignments. Do not take her unless she is the only class you are taking and you do not have a job.
I was able to pass this course during summer semester, but the amount of material that had to be done was excruciating. Her class consisted of discussions, assignments, quizzes, reflection of discussions, alongside 4 online exams which included reflections and two proctored tests. On the bright side professor was kind and responded promptly.
She doesn't actually teach. You watch her videos online and she doesn't know english very well; which wouldn't be a big deal but she doesn't know the proper grammar to connect words or sentences. Stutters a lot in her videos. Doesn't know multiple ways of explaining something so if you don't understand her way of explanation your basically SOL.
Workload is anything you would expect of any class. I took it online and I was a bit hesitant taking a core class online but it was great ! Worth the shot. She is willing to help students and work with their circumstances.
Im a business major so taking biology was difficult period . But she has videos along with readings which really help ! You dont have to buy the book for the online course , theres a online book available for free. Participation really matters but you can pass this class even if you struggle in certain sections !
This course is not one to be approached lightly. If you lack the motivation to do the learning outside of class (because it is a hybrid) or you dont show up, you will not do well. If youre motivated and up for a challenge this class is for you. Overall I enjoyed the challenge this course provided but it is not for everyone. Not for lazy students.
This Professor is awesome. Since this is a hybrid class, you have to put A LOT of effort, this is not for you if you need meetings to actually study the subject. However, the class is designed in a very logical way, and if you follow the recommendations, you will actually learn the material. It also helps you with strategies to study by yourself.
Great professor. Go to class and study, and you should receive a good grade.
Dr. Gavassa is a good professor. She cares about her students doing well in the class and understanding the material. Don't take the class if you're just looking for an easy A to satisfy a science requirement. If you want to understand the material on a conceptual level and are willing to put in some work, you'll appreciate this course like I did.
She gives a lot of work and quizzes to the point you might start to complain. BUTTT a lot of them are extra credit and it helps your grade.
A lot of extra credits and opportunities to get an A in this class. There is a lot of homework, but you learn. The reason I received a B is because I didnt have time to take the TLC extra points. The professor is very patient and if you are a student willing to put the extra efforts, it is an easy A.
I took this class online for BSC2010 and it was extremely challenging but the professor gives us lot's of extra credit opportunities to improve our grades in this course. There are weekly quizzes, discussions, PLTL homework, 4 online exams one Midterm, and a Final exam. This is not the class for lazy students but for those who is wants to succeed.
Biology 2 isn't easy but if you put the effort and time, then you will succeed in this course. I took this class online and what I can tell you is that professor sat gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. I would definitely recommend this class. The professor gets an A+ for caring about students performances and helping them succeed.
I took an online Bio class with Professor Sat Gavassa and I enjoyed the class very much. I found that the professor is very knowledgable and is there for students if we needed help. The online videos that she posted were super helpful and if you watch them without distracting yourself with social media, you would get the material very fast.
She really cares about her students and goes the extra mile to make sure you understand the content. Be prepared for weekly assignments that is easy to do when you read the book and/or her study material. Exams are easy enough and are based on the quizzes. Just do the work, be punctual on assignments, and you'll have an easy time with the class.
Professor Gavassa is one of the most understanding professors Ive ever had at FIU. Its a difficult class & I took it online, but doing the homework and going over the quizzes really helps!
As far as online classes go, she's a solid choice. A couple online assignments every week but nothing to extreme. She is nice and the class is straightforward. Online asignments really prepare you for the tests. Would've gotten an A if I didnt slack at the end but still and easy A in my opinion.
I took this class online. It requires a lot of work if you want to get an A. Though, I enjoyed the course and liked the professor a lot. If you are in the Biology major, I recommend this professor a lot, you are really going to learn. For those who are not in the Biology major, I think this class may take more than the desired time.
She makes the class very easy to pass, even if the material is difficult, it is not based on traditional methods so if you fail you know its bc you were slacking. She gives alot of extra credit, tests and assignments are part individual, part group so it helps you out. No iclickers, not mandatory, but if you miss you cannot makeup the work.
Biology is not an easy course. However taking this class with Professor Gavassa made it much easier for me! Everything is clear cut. There is a lot of busy work like discussions and quizzes but thats to be expected of an online classes. That busy work helps bring your grade up. Do all the modules and videos. She always responds to her emails!
The professor is a nice person, but nice does not mean her class is easy. I took online with her, biggest regret. There was a discussion twice a week, a quiz due on Sunday, reading lengthy chapters each week, it was insane. Never take an online class, its the worst. But overall, great professor who tried to minimize the reading with her own videos.
This course was a hybrid course, so it was difficult to teach yourself. All she did was talk about the chapters due that day then we went straight into a quiz. I didn't like the fact I had to teach myself. She didn't do much to help my understanding of the concepts, but if biology is for you and you don't mind teaching yourself. Take the course.
BSC2010 i took her hybrid course. hardest thing ever. she doesn't lecture in class!! she posts lecture videos and gives weekly handwritten homework (which is long). you go to class and take quizzes on what you learned. there is no actual learning in class. tests are hard. get the textbook! this hybrid course was bad. get ready to teach yourself
Shes pretty tough once it comes to grading. The work is not overwhelming but she does get picky with the discussion posts and the replies.
Class is not a crazy amount of work but its not easy either. Discussions will take a good amount of time and quizzes will take some time to review your material as well but they are short. She might get nit picky with some discussions and discussion replies but for the most part shes not too bad.
I liked the structure of the class. There is 6 HW questions every week, a quiz every class (individual and group) and pre-test questions on lockdown browser. Watch her lecture videos-they help a lot. A lot of HW questions and test questions are addressed in her videos. Recommend reading textbook for extra depth. Ask LA's questions, they help a lot!
I had the honor of having Dr. Gavassa as both my Bio 2 and Senior Seminar professor. She has always given great feedback on EVERY assignment and truly cares for her students! The Bio 2 was online so it felt impersonal, but in senior seminar she touched the hearts of all of her students and even remembered us by name! Her feedback is very thorough.
Make sure to study and understand the discussion weekly. Understand all the weekly quizzes, and read the textbook and the videos she post weekly. She help with Extra credit because the midterm and final are hard but you can study hard and pass.
ive never done so much work, this professor has you read the textbook, watch 40 min video lectures that have questions in them that you cannot skip/fast forward, tests, and assignments after test to discuss what you did wrong as well as a course that you need to sign up for to do assignments in conjunction with her regular assignments/discussions
So basically if you take an online class, there is tons of things to do in a week. There are weekly videos, discussion post with 6 questions+you write a reflection, her website with games and questions in pearson/meeting with students. There are 1 midterm and final+extra credit in SPOTS. If you do all the assignments and fail exams you will pass.
Professor Gavassa is literally the best. Go to class prepared to learn, complete all your assignment and read. I promise youll pass her class with flying colors.
Amazing professor. This class will teach you a lot and it will pay off in the long run as a deep understanding in these topics will help you out in genetics, cell biology, and even evolution. Easy weekly homework, group quizzes, and the exams are usually a mix of the HW questions and what is covered in the lectures. Not the easiest A but worth it
She is an amazing professor who really cares about her subject matter and students. If you are ever struggling with anything do not hesitate to meet with her, she really does care. As long as you put in a little bit of work, you can expect to come out both learning and getting that grade. This is the second class that I have taken with her. :)
You can tell she was very passionate about biology. In her live sessions she taught us the material we did for the week and if we had questions she would stay after to answer. She always made sure we understood. There was a lot of work weekly but as long as you can manage your time it isnt too difficult. I finished with an 87. She helps.
Take. This. Professor. She really cares about the students' learning and not just getting good grades. There are 2 videos with questions (called playposits), a forum, and reflection due each week. Weekly lectures and group quizzes are very helpful. Really hoping to get her for Bio 2 as well.
I took her for Senior seminar and really learned a lot about writing scientic papers, resumes, cover letters, and oral presentations. You'll also learn about career choices. The only thing I disliked is that there are lots of weekly assignments which can be hard to keep track of but lessens at the end of the semester.
She is okay but the tests are live with the group if you take her online. She also has LA's helping students during the tests. You do have to study for midterm and final exam but it wasn't too bad. She also provides a lot of extra credit for people that are struggling with grades to get a better grade. Taking her again because of the easy A.
Mind-numbingly boring and a ton of busy work. Had us doing assignments about what graduates schools or medical schools we're going to apply to, graphing our qualifications, who we'll ask for letters of recommendations. This is a lower level class. It's ridiculous she's asking this from people who haven't been at FIU long enough to know themselves.
Overall Pretty Easy, Weekly Discussion, and playposits. All the assignments are automatic 100's if you do them late penalty goes down to max 85 so that is nice. The big part is tests 2 of them a midterm and Final. The practice tests help as they are opposite questions to what the test will be so it helps to learn and understand each question their.
She has been very nice since the beginning of the class and keeps you informed of everything. Extra credit can raise your grade from one letter to the other. Good answering emails. Easy A. She will give you some questions to study for the mid and final. I would recommend her.
Super nice and caring! Simple discussions and only a midterm and a final which are very similar to the practice exams. The study guides are what take a long time but she gives you a month to complete them. Very lenient on grading and gives extra credit. No way you can fail this class... I would definitely take her again!
Easy A, you wont learn bio all that well though. A lot of playposits and busy work but do able. Her exams arent bad but she definitely phrases things weird. If you do the work you'll pass.
For a 1 credit class, I did not think I would have this many assignments. She is sweet, but expect 4-5 assignments per week, due Friday night. Weekly textbook discussion, an insane amount of career assignments (these are actually enjoyable), and a lot of discussions/readings. I liked this class but the workload was a lot. Accepts late work though
The zoom meeting were mandatory. She makes you take a quiz before class and then you take the same quiz with your peers. The one complaint I have is that she didn't let you retake your Midterm if honorlock crashed at the beginning of the exam. She is a very enthusiastic teacher and you can see she loves biology
Took her online LIVE in Spring. Meeting is once a week and weekly workload consists of discussion (automatic A), reflection (same for this) playposits and games from her own website. During class you do two quizzes one alone and the same one in a breakout room with your group. She offers extra credit for handwriting notes. 3 exams total, Honorlock.
Professor Gavassa is easy enough but the workload is insane. She gives so many time-consuming assignments per week and I know no other scientific literacy class has that level of workload. You can def get an A easily and turn in assignments whenever for a small late penalty but the amount of assignments was a bit ridiculous.
Super nice! Easy class to take over the summer but beware there is a lot you have to do each week(play posits are an hour long, study guide questions, a quiz, a reflection, etc.) Definitely manageable though! Study guide and reflection is an A if you turn them in and you can retake the playposits until desired grade. 2 test for the class
She accepts late work and the penalty is small, like a point per day. Overall is a good class, just a lot of things to do, so if you are taking it online I advise you to get ahead because the extra credits are handwritten notes. This class is not hard but very time-consuming. The professor is very organized and replies to emails very fast.
The best thing with this professor was the communication. She always responded in a timely manner and very respectfully. There is a ton of extra credit that helps towards your class performance and final grade. STUDY. No joke. Work can pile if you wait last minute & it's not worth it since the playposits are LONG. Take advantage of the resources
This class had more weekly assignments than any course I've ever had but I actually think it was necessary. Watch all the lectures and do all the assignments! You can't procrastinate in this class due to the volume of work but I liked the course. Her exam review is super helpful too, it saved some students from bombing the exams.
This professor gives an outstanding amount of redundant and repetitive assignments per week for a one credit class. Save your sanity. Half of such assignments are also useless, the same questions are presented in a thousand different ways. A one credit course should not have 9 hours of courseload a week... Insane,
This professor is an angel sent to earth (idc if that's dramatic). It's a lot of homework but still manageable and exams aren't weighted heavily which is amazing. She really cares about her students' LEARNING and not just good grades. I took her for gen bio 1 and 2 so I definitely recommend.
There is a lot of homework which is super hard to balance when you're basically a full-time student and work but she gives you a lot of extra credit and the play posits are really useful for the exams. There's a midterm and a final but if you study, you will be more than fine. DO PLTL
I took this course online and she was ok. You honestly dont interact much w her throughout the course. You do have to attend weekly 1h zoom lessons with a LA of your choice. There's many times to choose from so dont worry. She does give a lot of hw. Her tests are relatively easy if you do the assignments. Overall, would take again.
If you are a freshman this class would be perfect to guide you on studying and test taking in college, otherwise the class is very consuming. Three tests and a final test. For all of them you have to also take a practice exam. A lot of hw and the live sessions (quizzes), you must be there until everyone else leaves or else points are taken off.
This course had soooo much homework and playposits. It was very annoying and I found the amount to be tedious, although she gave us time to do it at our own pace it still felt like a lot. I wish they were due sunday and not friday, it would have helped decrease my workload. Her exams are easy if you pay attention to the playposits and take notes.
Honestly she gives like a bit of homework but the amount of extra credit is also crazy 100% recommend, also the homework is easy usually is videos and homework and the questions of the homework are very related to the tests if you want to study those to prepare yourself and the practice tests are usually super similar to the real tests
Really work heavy course, I dont reccomend taking it with other heavy classes. Multiple big writing assignments plus a 12 page research paper. She is a good grader & most people score well and youll probably get an A but it is an exhausting and tedious class for 1 credit. Pick an easy topic with lots of research on it and good luck
I took this class online. Yes it was a lot of work, biology itself is a hefty subject. There is a lot of homework but they all consist of playposit videos and quizzes for every module.Even if you don't pass your midterm or final you can still pass the class if you do all of your assignments. She does give extra credit too, overall I would recommend.
This professor is great! Lots of weekly work, but very manageable if you stay on top of it. The exams aren't too difficult if you use the resources like unstuck AI and do the assignments. Overall, definitely worth taking.
If you have a life outside of uni, do NOT take this class. The amount of coursework is insane, the professor while nice enough assigns busywork and tries to claim that its not. You will lose sleep and time taking this class, and its even worse if you have more than one course or if you work.
She was a good professor, given that this class was online. She did give a lot of assignments, and it was mainly playpostis and aswering questions. Her assignments are long but, if you do them all youll be able to pass with a good grade. There was only a midterm and a final but there were extra credit opportunities.
Prof Gavassa is super nice and sweet. This is an online class for a half semester, so it was a lot of discussion assignments and one midterm and a final. But she accepts late work for -1% each day which does not have a huge impact on the overall grade. PlayPosits are super long but they are very helpful for understanding the content and PLTL helps
I took both biology I and II with her, best professor I have ever had, super caring and understanding and her lessons were really interesting and useful! I would take this class any time again, loved her! Take her! 100/10!
Take her if you are disciplined with homework. Assigned lots of homework, but if you stay on top of it you would be fine. About 4 PlayPosits, 2 posts, and 2 quizzes due each week. There was a midterm and a final exam, both multiple choice. She gave lots of extra credit opportunities and all of the assignments cushioned your grade.
