He has a slight accent, but it is nothing. He is very straight forward with his presentations, with no wasted information. He certainly has the ability to amuse the classroom, but he is the consummate professional. He is genuine and brings a lot of patience to the classroom. We need more like him.
He is very helpful. He does get l little angry when the classs is talking when he is trying to talk, but hey that is rude! His labs are easy because he talks you through them! He is funny, and a real nice man!
Awesome professor! Took him for 130/130LL and took him for the labs for O. Chem I and II. He's very straight foward in his teaching and walks you thru step-by-step in lab. I heard the other O. Chem lab prof. has you go off on you own. Nice guy and gives study guides (and goes over them) for O. Chem lab practicals.
Mr.Bains is a very smart teacher! He teaches class like EVERYONE wants to take more chem. I was just doing it to fill a prereq. The class is fast and he pick and choses homework for maxium help but...if you dont do the homework you wont know what you are doing! He is really funny if your listening
Eventhough I still have NO intersest in CHM, he made the class fun. He is very funny if you listen. He will go out of his way to help you BUT you MUST ask questions. The class is very fast but if you do your homework and ask questions about it, he will SLOW down. P.S. do the blackboard stuff....
Dr. Bains is a great teacher. He's patient with us when we ask questions and he goes out of his way to help us understand. He encourages questions. This is a fast-paced class, not attending only hurts you. Ask lots of questions and do the Blackboard.
I had Dr. Bains for both semesters of Organic Chemistry Lab (CHM 235LL & 236LL). He may appear a bit intimidating at first, but is extremely helpful outside of class. He is a teacher who wants his students to succeed. He recognizes and rewards hardwork, ie extra credit. If you prepare thorough & concise pre-labs & lab reports you will get an A.
The lectures were so fast I had to teach myself and get help from others. If you can do the blackboard questions you will ace the course. Bains does not grade homework so only your test scores will count towards your grade. If you apply yourself you will recieve a good grade.
Explains concepts in depth and answers all questions. I solved all problems from Blackboard and did very well in the course.
I had Dr. Bains for both semesters of organic chemistry. VERY hard class but he will take the time to explain everything and make sure everyone understands the material before moving on. If you do your part he will do everything he can to help you succeed. His tests are hard, but you will know chemistry like the back of your hand after his class
Dr. Bains has to be my most favorite teacher in college so far. I dreaded chemistry before taking his course and now I am half way through it and I kind of like this class. He wants all of his students to succeed. He will explain everything as simple as possible. You should really pick this man as your teacher he is the best for me so far.
I love Dr. Bains! He is the best chemistry teacher! He loves to answer questions and loves his students! He will also prepare you for Chem 151! Make sure you do his blackboard questions! He gets test questions off of it! He explains things the easy way! So disappointed he isn't teaching Chem151 and Chem152! What a great teacher!! Just love him!
Dr. Bains is an amazing teacher. He expects a lot out of his students but he gives just as much in return. He provides you with plenty of examples and homework/blackboard problems so there are no surprises on the test. He really wants you to understand the concepts and prepares you for higher level chem. Great example of a wonderful professor!
Dr Bains was an excellent teacher. He gives his classes a lot of chances to succeed. He explains everything until everyone gets it. He won't move on if everyone hasn't fully understood. By far one of the best professors I've ever had.
If you need to take Chem130 or O-chem then definitely take it with Dr. Bains! He takes the hardest concepts and makes them easy! He is the most helpful chem professor on this campus! He wants to make sure his students understand! His tests are hard but he is just amazing! If you don't take him you miss out! Trust me! He is the smartest chem prof!
There is a lot of homework in his class! homework, homework, homework! but he is very intelligent and very helpful. did i mention he gives a lot of homework?
Dr. Bains is wonderful. His knowledge of the material is impressive, he wants you to understand and succeed, and he is extremely patient and answers every question. Do the hmwk/blackboard and you will pass the exams. This is Organic Chemistry so no matter the prof, you have to study.
I took his CHM 130 Flex class. The course was very organized and his lecture notes helped me understand the material very well. Solve all Blackboard problems to do well. He was always available for help.
I know nothing about chemistry before taking this class. Everyone said how hard it was. Mr. Bains explained things so well that it made it very understandable. He was always willing to help and seemed to genuinely care about the students success. I highly recommend Mr. Bains.
I DO NOT recommend Dr. Baines. He is hard to understand (accent) and likes to teach you what NOT to do first, and then teaches the right way which is extremely confusing. I ended up attending class but teaching myself using the book. Only help from him was the optional homework and quizzes he provided.
Awesome lecturer with added very funny dry humor. I dreaded Chemistry, but got an "A" because of him. His dimensional analysis teaching has meant that I have never got a single math question wrong in my nursing classes and I will never forget his classes. Thank you!
I took organic chemistry with Dr. Bains and he is amazing!! He really wants you to understand and he repeats concepts for you if you dont understand them. He is always willing to move the exams back if our class wasnt ready to take them and his exams are straight forward. I highly recommend him!
I took chem130 with Dr. Bains. He is nice and helpful. Just do the practice tests and assignments and you'll be fine. He really knows his stuff and he gives more extra points during exams. Easy to get an A.
Dr. Bains was very helpful. I took his 5 week summer class and while it was a lot of work I was able to get an A. He makes himself available to answer any questions and I did not think that his accent was hard to understand. He understands that it is a hard class and gave extra points on two tests to make sure that everyone did well.
only word can describe Dr Bains is AMAZING. this guy is wonderful :)
I switched from another Maricopa College to take from Dr. Bains and I recommend him to everyone! He explains the concepts and goes over examples at a follow-able pace. His homework is a good preparation for the test, so the tests are very fair. I am not a chemistry person, so I credit Dr. Bains' instruction to my success in first semester Organic!
You will never find a professor more determined to teach you. He is extremely passionate about his work and understands how difficult the material is. Do the homework, take plenty of notes, and ALWAYS ask questions if you struggle! He will always stop to help you! He is amazing and I would not recommend anyone else but him. :)
Take his class if u wanna learnt. If u r looking for easy "A" forget his class. Take it with other instructor.
great instructor, do his homework and you should be fine.
I took chem 130 over the summer and thought I'd regret it, since math really isn't my thing. But Dr. Bains is a fantastic teacher. He explained things really well and was willing to explain things. I learned a ton in those 5 weeks, and I will definitely take him again if he's teaching organic chemistry.
Dr. Bains is THE BEST. Not only does he care about students to learn, but his passion for chemistry and to teach his students says it all. If you would like to LEARN, and walk away from a class with Knowledge, by doing the work you are assigned to do and attending the class, no reason why no one should not get an A in his class. Love Him!!!
He was OK. Took CHM235 at another school and was more motivated in that one.
Best O Chem Professor! He has a true passion for the field and really has high hopes for his students. He is more interested in the students knowing the material than about grades. Smartest professor at PVCC! Plus his dry humor really helped lighten those other complicated moments.
Dr. Bains is a great teacher. He really wants all of his students to learn and succeed. He will repeat the important points multiple times to make sure everyone understands and is very helpful if you ask questions. OChem is definitely not an easy subject but the tries his best to explain it so everyone gets it. Highly recommended!
He was a really great teacher. Pretty much gives you an A, as long as you do all the homework and study like he says, you will receive that golden A!! I highly recommend taking him if you are someone who isn't interested in this class, and only doing it cause you have too!
Great teacher. Took his class over the summer, a lot of material packed into 1 month. Yet extremely easy to get an A due to the amount of extra credit given out. I ended the class with 100% in both the lab and lecture. Show up everyday and do the homework until you understand it.
Great teacher. He really cares about his students and wants you to understand the material. You have to put work in but this class wasn't hard to get an A in. The online quizzes are really helpful-very similar to the exams. Would definitely recommend taking this course with him!!!!
Dr. Bains is a VERY good teacher! The material is a bit foreign compared to past chem classes but he is there for you. This course was difficult for me because I was taking it with biology, physics, and statistics; take this course with less time consuming classes. Do the homework and online non-graded quizzes ARE VERY HELPFUL! DO THEM! Great guy!
I took 2 semesters of O'Chem with Dr. Bains and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is very obvious that this professor wants you to pass the PCAT/MCAT. Everyone in my 2nd semester that took the PCAT said that they were well prepared for it. Great teacher
Great professor! Dr. Bains explains everything very clearly and his slides are extremely helpful along with the quizzes on canvas. Highly recommended!!
I took O Chem 1 and 2 with him and I thought he did an amazing job. This is NOT an easy class by any means,i.e. expect about 10-20 hours of homework each week. His tests are very reasonable compared to many teachers. He writes his tests from the homework he assigns. He is always willing to help you, as long as you make the time to see him.
Professor Bains is awesome! He is very helpful, and gives fair tests. If you do all the homework, pay attention and ask question you should be able to get an A in his class.
i was scared of organic chemistry and everyone telling how hard is this class until i took it with him and hes now on my top list
He is awesome. He cares more about you actually learning the material than grades. Always offers help and homework is extra credit. Great teacher, would recommend!
Dr Bains is an amazing professor. He is very concerned with pacing his lectures properly by asking is it OK before moving on to the next topic. If you tell him no no no no, he will wait until you know EEEEXACTLY what he is teaching. Make sure you go to class and look at the green laser he uses to know what to focus on for tests, don't just azume.
I took Dr Bains in the summer - 5 week class. It was intense - but he made it completely doable. I have never taken chemistry before so I was very scared. He took it slow, made sure everyone understood before moving on, & offered extra credit. Show up-do all of the homework-ask questions. He is very approachable & wants to help!
Dr. Bains is the best professor I've ever had. I had O Chem 1 with somebody else & struggled. O Chem 2 was great w/ Dr B. He explains everything really well. Do the homework & online quizzes. Attend lecture & study a lot & you will be fine. I learned a lot and feel well prepared for my entrance exam. He's great. Wish I had him for O chem 1 as well.
Great professor. Dr. Bains really cares about how much students learn in his class. Lots of homework!!
Dr. Bains is a great teacher! Ochem is definitely the hardest class I've ever taken, but Dr. Bains does everything he can to help out. He really takes time to make sure you understand the concepts and encourages people to ask as many questions as they need. He really tries to prepare his students for the MCAT. Your grade is based soley on tests.
Dr. Bains is easily one of the best prof I have ever taken! He truly cares about each student as well as their success in one of the most difficult chem classes. He gives you every opportunity to pass the class, so just show up, do your hw, and ask questions. Every test is like a replica of the hw so there are no surprises. The labs are fun, too!
I had to retake this course from another school and he had explained the material in a way that made totally sense. He taught material that is going to be expected on every exam and final. he truly cares about the students, and is easily approachable. He doesn't get angered if you ask a lot of questions.
I took a 5 week summer class with Dr. Bains. As tough as it was, I'm so glad I went through with it. It was intense, but I actually enjoyed it. Nothing quite better than when an instructor gives you CLEAR guidelines on what to do/expect. For this course, I don't feel I would have gotten the grade I did if I was working. You definitely need the time
Bains is the teacher to go for chemistry. He really cares about the students and offers a lot of extra credit! Do the HW and you basically did the exam! Take good notes and I repeat... DO THE HW! Lab is very easy. Different from other colleges. Very funny during lecture. Keeps people awake. Downside was his soft quiet voice. SIT IN THE FRONT!
One of the best prof. I've taking in my life. He is super knowledgeable, caring, inspiring, and a father. I took him for both Ochm classes.
Best teacher to take for chemistry hands down I had to retake chemistry lecture and I passed with an A!!! Hes a very caring teacher and he wants you to succeed he only cares about you learning the material, there is a lot of homework from the book so be prepared its super easy !!! All the quizzes are done on canvas those are easy too!
Must do homework and online quizzes or you have no chance. Must take seriously. Homework & Quizzes not graded just used to study(similar to test). Get ready to put in some serious time into this class. I got an A due to big curve but I wasnt even sure if I passed after final and we had 10 people left at final. Grade consists of 4 test (drops 1).
Very cool class. Lots of homework. Lectures are informative.
He speaks too softy. Sit on the right side of the room or youll never see what hes writing. Print power points yourself or you wont see some of them. The final is graded differently than all the rest of the exams and its considerably tougher. Its the one exam score you cant drop and it can drop you 2-3 letter grades overall.
He speaks softly and his accent makes it quite difficult to understand him. He is a smart man but not a good teacher.
I took both O Chem 1 and 2 with Dr. Bains during this past fall semester and I highly recommend taking O Chem with him. He is soft-spoken but will consistently take the time to help students after class and he provides tips on how to prepare for the exams. If you do the hw, online quizzes, and attend class; you will do well. He grades fairly.
Professor Bains is the best best professor I' ve ever had at PVCC. He's super caring about what students learn and he provides extra credit as well .Come on guys this is a science class and you need to work for it !!! He spends so much time outside class to answer questions. The way he speaks is conpletely understandable. I definitely recommand him
I had Prof. Bains for a 5wk summer hybrid Chemistry class. Mr. Bains was one of the best teachers I ever had, it didnt feel like a hybrid class. He truly wants you to learn the material & ALWAYS takes time to answer any questions in or out of class. He gives a lot of homework, but youll really learn a lot without any of the stress of a 16wk class.
Great professor! Knows how to explain the material simply so that it is easier to digest. There is no shortage of material to learn, so be prepared to spend 10+ hours a week outside of class studying and doing the homework. He is very quiet, but also very patient, so don't be afraid to ask questions. He wants to help!
many many many homework but great professor. be ready for many assignments. great class for summer
Bains is amazing. He a great lecturer and cares so much about students and their success. The only thing graded are 4 tests, with one dropped. However, the tests are composed of random hw questions, which means (assuming you did the hw) youve seen the questions, but the hw can be 30+ questions long. So its a great deal of work, but doable.
His online class isn't a good choice. He teaches basic Information of lecture and he takes a hard exam which you don't even know how to answer the questions. 4 exams, most of the questions have 10 points that if you miss 1 you will lose 10 points! I wish we had more examples and video lessons to study. There are no enough examples in lecture videos
His exams are very hard and each question have like 10 pints!! if you miss one question then you lose a lot of points!!
I have had Dr. Bains in person & online. Without question, he is phenomenal in person; he is engaging as a lecturer, highly educated, and provides great feedback. A lot of this disappeared when things switched to online. The lectures and exam prep isn't too difficult, but the exams are ungodly difficult, even with a solid understanding.
Waste of time! I am so disappointed. I earned my first B in this class after passing 74 credits with A. NO enough resources WITH A STUPID EXAM that only a PhD degree can take! He doesn't want you to succeed, He is ready to give you F. I wish PVCC offers another instructor for Organic chemistry. If you want to fail take this course.
Bains is an amazing ochem professor. I took 235 with him in person, and he does an amazing job explaining the material and moving at the right pace for the class to learn and succeed. You can tell he cares a lot about his students and their success. Online, while easier, was not as good of an experience and I feel like I learned less than I wouldve
His lectures are monotone and it's very difficult to understand him through his thick accent. Beyond that, he is a very lazy lecturer and skips over many important concepts that later appear as difficult questions on his exams. Grading is pretty straightforward, but it doesn't really matter when the lectures are absolutely atrocious. Steer clear.
Great professor!! The lectures are recorded and he explains everything very clearly. Study the PowerPoint notes he posts along with his recorded lecture and you will do well. His tests are over the fundamentals and does not try to trick you. He was very helpful and his lectures were easier to follow. Definitely recommend taking him for Chm 130AA.
I was extremely disappointed by the lack of resources. He provided lectures followed by homework out of the book with answers in the solutions manual. The solutions manual does not explain the answers. When I emailed asking for additional resources he attached the link to the tutoring center. I relied on Kahn Academy to get me through.
Dr. Bains is very helpful and explains everything thoroughly. The material is very interesting and the way he teaches it makes it even easier to understand. The lecturers were really informative and the quizzes were very straight forward. I learned a lot!
All pre-recorded lectures & all assignments are available at start of class. Only teaches what's on tests, so pay attention. Tests allow 4 attempts & show what questions you missed on each attempt. VERY easy class as long as you pay attention to the vids. Be prepared to never get messages back from him though.
He speaks so quietly and doesn't really ever explain certain concepts or how we got to the answer. I am always left confused or spaced out merely because I can't understand anything. I feel like I completely skipped a prereq for this course when I know I didn't. If I could give him a 0 I would.
There are lengthy lecture videos for each quiz. Only 16 quizzes and,10 lab quizzes. 4 attempts on each quiz. Syllabus says to get a $150 lab kit. The labs were fun but not necessary for doing well on the quizzes so If you want to save money do not buy the kit. Overall the class was good, if you take the 4 week class, there are 4 quizzes due weekly.
He's an Easy A if you focus and do homework, exams are not bad he's the best Ochem professor
I really enjoyed Professor Bains's class. The material is very difficult and I spent a lot of time every week on this class but if you do the work you will get an A. The homework wasn't graded but it is necessary to pass the class. I heard a lot of ochem horror stories but Professor Bains's class isn't one of them.
I loved his class. His lecture notes can be a bit dry. But I enjoy searching other online videos of professors breaking down formulas. As far as grading goes, you have to try hard to not get an A in his class. I'm not a chemistry lover but I am leaving his class enjoying chemistry. He responds very quickly to any inquires too!
The subject is difficult and he made is bearable. He really wants his students to pass and will stay after class to help with homework. Homework is used to help on tests and understand material but isn't graded. It was worth a drive for me to take the class with this professor. You won't be disappointed.
I took Professor Bains for Ochem 1 and 2 and I had an amazing experience!! The lectures were long but were very educational and the labs were fun, you do them together as a class which I thought made them easier and more bearable. There is a lot of tough material but if you study and do the homework from the book it's an easy A.
What an INCREDIBLE professor! If every chemistry class was taught by him, every student would pass. Lectures were long but they relate exactly back to the homework and tests. He explains concepts completely and repeats the important information. Truly the best professor I've ever had!
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! I failed ochem1 and was soo nervous to take ochem2 but this prof. is 100% the best prof I have ever had. He truly cares about his students understanding the concepts and he makes lab/lecture the most fun they can be! I am sad I didn't have him for ochem1. I would 100% recommend this prof to anyone considering taking ochem 1/2!
He explains very well and it is really easy to follow. I took a 1 month hybrid class so we did the lecture and lab in class and the rest was at home, which includes homework problems, weekly quizzes, and tests at the end of every week. He is very understanding and if you ask him to repeat anything after class, he explains it again to you.
He was a great professor in the sense of trying to make you learn and help you. However, he suddenly switched ALL online exams to in person FREE RESPONSE half-way through the semester. Which was not stated in the syllabus or course description. This made the class 100x more difficult and more tough than any university level class. Dont recommend.
Let me tell you there are LOTS of problems. Only 50% of what was covered in the online lecture will prepare you for the hw. the other half is stuff we never even once discussed in the lectures. Not to mention the HW questions in the text used are also incorrectly written throwing off your entire answer which may have taken you 30 mins todo.
Have nothing good to say about this course. I feel like I've been put in the wrong class because the lecture material is vague and does not prepare you at all for exams or hw. difficult concepts are barely touched on while simple concepts are over explained. I cant believe they allow this prof to teach with this little of information to succeed.
I took the four week summer course - let me just say it's a lot. The quizzes are more formatted to the exams but this class is ONLY graded on exams, and if you miss one question on an exam you're automatically kicked to a B. Don't rely on just HW! Practice the quizzes more (unlimited attempts) and just grasp the concept and pray for good luck.
I took the hybrid in person/online for both semesters & he was great. Nice guy, always stays to answer your questions. He switched from online to inperson exams but he told us exactly what to focus on and almost all the questions were from the homework problems. Quizzes & homework are online & can be taken unlimited times. Lab is just participation
Grade is based off of four exams only. No extra credit. You have to complete an attendance quiz once a week or could be dropped (attendance does not have points). Syllabus quiz= no points. You will fail without getting the textbook or solutions manual that is specifically required. Dry lectures. Lowest exam is NOT dropped.
Baines is knowledgable BUT provides 16+ PAGE exams w students running out of time & half the exam blank - considering all exam questions are FREE RESPONSE. Tough grader + ONLY exam grades. NO e.c. , no attendance pts, and no quiz/hw grades. EXCESS hw problems each chapter. Would not subject myself to this unnecessary stress if I were you.
One of the worst classes i've taken in my extensive academic career. Grade comprised of 4 exams only. Exams are extremely complex and questions are designed for mental gymnastics rather than test your subject matter knowledge. Insufficient time provided on exams to fully consider the sometimes countless answer options. Lectures are dry,
Caution, this is a terrible class. 4 exams only, no other credit. Exams are nearly impossible to complete with thoughtful consideration for each question. Cannot skip a question and go back. I really feel the motivation is to confuse students rather than encourage learning. Exams all multiple choice but somehow take 2 weeks to return a grade.
He's a good professor, this class is VERY test heavy, but he prepares you for it. If you do all the hw you would do good on the tests. Total of 4 lecture test and a lab test. Read the textbook and do all the homework. He's very understanding. I would take his class again if I had to.
Took Bains for orgo1+2, definitely a daunting class because the only grades are lecture exams + a lab final exam but if you do all of the assigned hw problems (not graded) and pay attention to the things he emphasizes in lecture you should be okay. Sometimes he's funny too lol
I've never had to beg a professor for office hours until this class. Nice guy, but unable to teach all learners. Very little support/encouragement. Only grades are 4 exams (16 pages long + ridiculous), and lab final. Doesn't really teach- tells you to do the 150-200+ homework problems. The labs are unorganized and go over in time every week.
