Oh my gosh, do not take anything with this professor. He is nearly impossible to understand, every other sentence is "are you all with me." You can tell he learned English within the last 10 years. Avoid at all costs.
OK, so he's probably the worst teacher I've ever had, and granted he copies his tests from the internet test bank, but look on the bright side, you'll know all your exam questions before you take the exam. However, don't expect you'll be learning anything
lots of work. lab is fun, let's you discover things firsthand. exposes you to microbial diversity. need to study material every day.
he's a nice guy, very smart but very very hard to understand...best i can say is that he sounds like he has marbles in his mouth. this lectures are sometimes dull, he does make an occassional joke, but be prepared to work hard for your grade

These other people don't know what they are talking about, Walia is an excellent teacher. YOu can easliy understand him if you're not a moron. He is very intelligent and willing to help if you have any concerns. His tests are all hand written and straight forward.

He's not very clear, but he's a great teacher. He makes you think independently which is what some people dislike. (Get used to it). He assumes you are there because you are planning on going to a professional school. So if that's the case you should do very well in his class or you are going to have problems later. He wants effort.

I liked the guy, after I got used to his accent. Great sense of humor and knows his stuff. Laid back and encourages discussion. Tests are pretty easy if you have half a clue about what's going on.
If the test questions are from an internet test bank can't you go online and see the questions and study them before the test? I have to take this professor next semester and there is no way around it. All I want to know is if it's possible to pass the class with an A and where can I find the internet database with all the test questions?
This professor is absolutely absurd. If there is any way you can skip him, I highly would recommend you do so. He is nowhere near helpful, and he will put material on the test that he has not covered yet. He says one thing but does another. Enough said? What kind of professor is that? IMPOSSIBLE!
Walia does know his stuff, but he is unable to teach. He jumps around all over, barelly understand the guy. He'll say one thing and totally do something else. Good luck if you have Prof. Walia
At first I was not fond of him, but the key is to talk to him after class when you have ?s, ask ?s during class, ask him to repeat what he said if you don't understand. He really does know his stuff and wants his students to learn AND score well in his class. Humorous guy. Don't go to class with a preconceived idea just from these other bad ratings
Make it a point to meet in his office or talk with him after class at least 5 times during the semester. Try it. Class is challenging, but after all it's micro! A lot of material , but sometimes he gives you the exam before hand, then all you have to do is find the answers
All in all, prof. walia is a nice guy. He really knows his stuff, however, he is rather hard to understand with his accent. Other classes before us said that he puts out study guides for our use, he stopped doing that now, so all you have is the book and his notes. He askes some randome questions that are from like one word in the book. Good LUCK!
Never ripped a Professor, but Walia is a real piece of work. He does not care and is a bad instructor. OU should be ashamed of having Profs like him. Avoid this guy, he is unstable, full of himself (pompous) without substance.
This professor was the worst I have had so far. His tests are unpredictable and he used to give out a study guide previous years but no longer does that. You cannot understand a word he says and taking notes in his class is difficult if you can't understand him. Reading the book may help a little more but you will have to study a lot, Good Luck...
Had him Fall 07. Very hard to understand because he has an accent. Would have been nice to know what to focus on. Lectures were awful.
Profossor Walia is a nice guy. He is very difficult to understand if you have a hard time decifering accents. However, he is a great teacher and knows his stuff. He really wants students to walk away from class understanding the material. Exams are tough, but he goes over a practice exam and some of the questions are on the exam.
Dr. Walia is one of the better professors I have had at OU. He has a wealth of knowledge and as well as a true concern for his students. This was a difficult course, but his philosophy was that a 400 level course SHOULD be challenging. You will come out of this class knowing a lot of information. Go to class and prepare beforehand and youll do well

One word, "LAZY." Worse professor I have ever had at any University or College. VERY hard to understand, textbook is terrible, uses publisher text questions, misspells multiple words in his poorly done powerpoints and abuses his teacher aids. He was over an hour late for the final! Shameful that he has tenure (10 yrs) as he should be let go. LAZY!
walia is a good professor. the material is tough but hello if your in nursing school these classes arent blow offs. stop being lazy kids-- alot of self teaching and memorizing his reviews. he makes good jokes but is hard to understand. overall very funny and a good class

Prof. Walia is a good man. He really cares about how you are doing in the class. IF you feel you did bad on a test, right after he will let yo retake it. Micro overall is hard w/whoever you take, but I would recommend him. His tests are basically his notes and w/e tables he tells you to study. Go to every class or you will fail.
One of the worst teachers at OU. PLEASE heed my warning ! Cannot understand him at all. Hardly fluent in english and has terrible medical terminology pronunciation. It's sad that there are so many great teachers who could REPLACE this AWFUL professor. I don't understand how anyone could think he is good? WHO CARES HOW NICE HE IS !, He's horrible !
Dr. Walia is a great professor, he really cares about his students and wants them to do well. Go to class, read your book, do his practice questions and you will do well. His accent is easy to understand after about the 3rd lecture. I would take him again for sure!
Save your grade point. This guy shows up late for class, reads u his ppt slides, tells u if u don't understand read the book and will insult u openly in class if u don't give him a correct answer. He needs to retire, u can see he is clearly burned out or send him to the lab full time, doesnt belong in the classroom anymore

Walia is a very nice man, but very confusing professor. Prepare for quizzes the day after you take notes on a chapter. Even if you do not finish the slides he will give you the quiz. He doesn't answer questions directly. READ THE BOOK! His notes are helpful but he tends to get off subject easily. All exams are based on the book!!!

Prof Walia is a good prof. The course has a lot of material, but thats just the nature of the course. He doesn't "cram" info, he goes at a nice pace, even for a summer class. He is funny, and tries to make class "juicy"! He has a difficult accent, but you can understand by lecture 3. I recommend Walia. Knows his stuff, is funny, &keeps a good pace!
While he was funny in class he was very unprofessional overall. Was routinely late for class, forgot to bring materials, or brought the wrong tests/quizzes. The tests were based on factoids from the book and not really from his notes. Be ready to teach yourself, and pay attention to the little details in the book, even stuff he said to ignore.
Dr. Walia had expert knowledge and enthusiasm for microbiology. He cared about his students gaining a deeper education and consequently he preferred to challenge them during lectures. This could be intimidating, but a very good growth opportunity. I found him personable, willing to lend assistance and he ultimately delivered on his commitments.
He simply didn't teach. All material provided and presented by students with no accuracy check. No feedback. Took over half of the semester to get the first test score. Got test 2 score two weeks before end of semester. Never got feedback on more then half the grades for the semester. Just a submitted final grade with no idea where it came from.
He pretends to teach at the graduate level by not doing ANYTHING. No one in this class was taught a single thing by Walia. He refused to present material. If you bother to look up the few things he did mention about micro you find out he has about a 50% chance of being correct. This is what keeps the OU bio department from being taken seriously.
This can't even be considered a class. There was no structure at all. Through the whole semester we were kept guessing what material to cover since he didn't himself go over biology material. A self taught approach can work I guess, but at least a little guidance regarding WHAT to cover would have been nice.
Dr.Walia is a wonderful professor! I throughly enjoyed his class and he kept things very interesting and practical for nursing students! If you study and read the book you will do great! Very funny and really wants you to learn Microbiology! Best class I've had at OU so far!!
Nic Prof. Covers the material perfectly and his quizzes and exams are not that hard. Exams are easy bcs he repeats the Qs from the quizzes. Read the chapter summary before going to class and you will do awesome. Took this class in summer. Passed with an A.
Funny and nice guy, but doesn't teach nearly what you need to know. If you study just the power points, you will fail. Read the textbook and take good notes and glance over chapter review. He gives review exam questions so memorize them because some of them will be word-for-word on your exam. Offered extra credit essay opportunity. Finished w 3.9
I was very frustrated with this professor. His accent is very thick and its hard to understand him. His lectures were useless, he rambles. You will rely a lot on your book. The good thing is he uses all his quiz and exam questions from a test bank. He says attendance is mandatory but he takes attendance infrequently.
Professor Walia clearly wants all of his students to pass. However, this class is mostly self taught; you have to read the book and take notes on your own. His accent does make it difficult to understand and the lectures are unbearably long, but overall its an easy class. Just read the book and you'll do fine. Finished with a 3.8
Be ready to teach yourself the material. Don't go to class unless you've read the chapter ahead of time because he expects the students to know the material in and out before he lectures. His lectures are long, pointless, and don't prepare you at all for the quizzestests. Nice guy but I wouldn't recommend.

He expects his students to read, and lectures assuming that everyone already knows the information. It is clear that he wants his students to do well though. While he does not offer extra credit, he will do what he can to help you pass if you put in the effort. Make use of office hours, his accent isn't easy to understand, but he wants to help.
Good man, not the best teacher. Lectures at a level higher than for the intro class i took with him. There were always surprises with the test. Tells you to study from his question bank, then doesn't test from those. You study from the book... and all the test questions were from his question bank... Only 4 grades in the class so don't mess up one!

Toughest professor I have ever had. Hard to understand and makes everyone feel stupid if they ask a question. Entire class is out of 95 points. Two quizzes and three exams. Basically be prepared to teach yourself all of the material. Wouldnt recommend.
Took medical microbiology with him which is a level 400 class and got a 3.5. He's a very interesting teacher and his methods are quite... mysterious. But overall, I learned A LOT from the course and I'm sure I'll retain just about all of it. You can complain about him all you want, but if you do your work, you'll get a good grade. Love ya Walia!
After reading reviews I was super nervous about taking microbio with him. Which is insane because he is the nicest person i have ever met, he cares so much about the students. He offers extra credit and even added a second extra credit assignment because we asked him too. He just wants everyone to learn and do good. TAKE HIS CLASS.
I was very nervous to take Dr. Walia's Microbio class in the beginning of the semester. Turns out it wasnt so bad. He's honestly a super nice guy, even tho his teaching methods are meh. His exams are straight off quizlett, so study those real good. At least in a small class environment, he was funny and honestly wanted everyone to pass. Recommend
I was scared to take this professor at first due to the harsh reviews, but this was as easy as Micro could get. His tests are based HEAVILY off the practice questions, he gives extra credit, and he genuinely wants everyone to pass. Lectures are kinda pointless, book not really needed unless you want extra information. TAKE HIM TO PASS MICRO!!!
If you are going to take Microbio at OU I strongly recommend taking it with Walia. I was very apprehensive to take this class due to his reviews, but now that I have taken it I'm not sure why the reviews he has are so harsh. He truly wants everyone to do well in his class, he offers extra credit, and his exams really are not that bad.
He really does want his students to do well, such as giving another exam to improve, but with that being said... the final is worth 50% of your grade and was partly short answer even though we didn't know and were given multiple choice study guides that didn't go over it
Hands down the WORST professor I have EVER had.
Teaching method is the worst and honestly very confused about how he is still a professor. Comes late to class and exams every time without apology, its just the norm. Will call you out and make rude remarks if you dont know something. Hard to understand him. Only good thing is that all the exams are on quizlet, so the class is easily passable.
I really respect professor Walia, his lectures are interesting even though some of the stuff he discusses is not on the exam. Your best bet on doing good in the class is do the practice questions and review book/slides often. I also really appreciate how much he cares for his students! Take him for microbio
If you read anything negative about his teaching style, its probably true. BUT, if you are looking to get a 4.0 & not really learn much, hes your guy. I loved having him as my professor he was hilarious & all answers are online. Youve gotta be extremely naïve to not realize all your answers are online & to not receive an A. Love Walia so much.
Super easy class. You won't learn much from him, but the book is a good resource and he provides powerpoints. Totally online and you learn on your own. Super easy A for microbiology.
Entire class is on Connect. He does not lecture and only posts PowerPoint slides. Basically paying $2500 for an online homework course, which is disappointing. Easy A, all solutions are on quizlet. Take for the easy grade.
I took his micro class fully online. It is the easiest A you will ever receive. If you are looking to learn the material, he is not your guy. You will teach yourself the whole semester. All of the content is online homework, quizzes, and exams. I definitely recommend taking this class with Walia if you want to receive a good grade.
This class is the easiest A I've ever received. All of the homework, quizzes and exams are on connect. He does lecture twice a week but attendance is not mandatory. A lot of people finished the class early. He gives you the option to learn.
If you want an easy A for Micro, take it with him. If you want to actually learn, he is not the right professor for you. He has terrible communication and if he does answer your email, the response most likely won't even answer your question. Lots of homework, quizzes, and exams; cumulative midterm and final exam.
Had no idea what grade was in BIO 4530 until last day of when grades were due.Ended with an A overall,even tho was always lost on when things were due to his lack of communicational and organizational skills,but was worth it .Very scattered in terms of moodle setup and deadlines of hw.Everything was done on connect & 1 pg papers of videos on moodle
Take micro IRL. He assigns useless + time-consuming Connect HW (25-30 Q assignment per chapter, 50 Q quiz per chap, 100-170 concepts per chap, 6 exams not including midterm/final), you might as well go in person and learn it properly. He assigned 8 chapters worth of work in 1 month. No lecture videos or emails, only slides, you do it all yourself
Dr. Walia is a good professor, He gives you the option to learn the materials. multiple assignments and assessments with one midterm and a final. some online vidoes summaries but otherwise the class is fair.

If you want to learn nothing in micro and get an easy A this is truly the guy for you. He assigns things on connect and post lecture slides on Moodle. We have gotten one email from him the whole semester so far and don't plan on hearing from him anymore. Crazy how some professors operate like this.
76 days into the semester and haven't heard from him. He has yet to input a single grade into Moodle. I haven't learned a single thing but if you want an easy A take him.
I learned nothing, however this was the easiest class I have ever taken. It was supposed to be online synchronous, but on the first day he switched it to asynch (bc we begged). Anyways, he is a chill guy and everything is on mcgraw hill.
i never met the professor in person. gave lots of assignments but easy and doable. i completed everythign except the exams in the first month. assignments are very long about 100-200 questions each. the questions are all multiple choice. the exams were about 50-75 questions.
Walia's micro class is an easy A, but don't expect much learning. His teaching is hands-off - you'll essentially teach yourself using the textbook and Connect homework. Definitely use unstuck study alongside other study aids to prep for the exams.
This is an easy course but he doesn'tanswer to emails, and he made no announcement . he wait till very last minutes to grade.all of the work is done in connect. I had issue from connect that they didn't transfer my grades to Moodle and he told me to connect with their customer service. Dont take him if your mental health and learning is imp to u.
