I was apprehensive about this course prior to meeting Scarlett. She is an amazing professor! Willing to help and she keeps the class interesting by varying assignments. She incorporated, journals, blogging and Twitter! Fun fun fun!
Very good! Took her for developmental writing and it was pretty easy considering that I don't like to write...she prepared me to pass the needed test for college level English...
Hill is an extremely helpful, caring, and passionate teacher. She cares about students and the material taught. She would be my first choice for any English based class.
She was what teachers should be. Smart, considerate, helpful. she made learning fun and easy. I highly recommend her.
She is the best teacher for Developmental writing. Did the wintermester and I passed the accuplacer with a high grade. She teaches exactly what you need to know inorder to pass the accuplacer. Any questions that you have, she will answer them. Very entertaining. Knows exactly what she is teaching. I highly recommend this teacher!!!
Best Writing Professor EVER! She is passionate about her students and the material she covers. She made writing fun. I plan on taking her for Comp 1.
By far the best teacher ever! I have been taking developmental writing classes since I started college in 2009 (currently 2011), but once I had Mrs.Hill as a teacher that all changed. Her teaching skills and enthusiasm for teaching is great. I passed the Writeplacer with flying colors! :)
Very Challenging course but amazing teacher.
A great teacher, one of the best I've had. She makes the work challenging, but keeps things fun at the same time.I highly recommend her.
Mrs. Hill is an amazing teacher! She is extremely competent, and truly cares about the success of her students. This instructor goes above and beyond to help her students pass. I would definitely recommend taking her class. A true professional!
I really enjoyed this class. The teacher was great and easy to work with..
She has attitude sometimes but at the end of the semester she helped and care more.
Didn't help at all... Grading standards were misterious. In a Developmental class she treat you like you where going to write a book.
Her instructions are terrible and her attitude is very rude. A developmental teacher? Trust me, she is not. She overloads the class. Then, when there is an issue, she is nowhere to be found for assistance. If an assignment has an issue, she does not help you fix it before the deadline. Just a terrible developmental teacher.
Mrs. Hill is great. I took a flew class, and although there was a good amount of homework, all of it was interesting and usually fun. She is a very chill teacher who always takes off her shoes when she teaches! Although she's a tough essay grader, you won't regret taking her.
She will push you to your limits when it comes to writing. I left this class a better writer than ever. Mediocrity will not pass in this class. She is blunt at times, but because she knows that you can do better. He standards are crystal clear. I have no idea what everybody else is upset about.
She is by far the most amazing English teacher ever! She helped me become a way better writer overall. Her class was pretty hard but I learned a lot about myself as a writer. As long as you show that you care about the class and show that you are putting in your very best effort then you are good to go! Also her British accent is cool!
She was not my favorite for many reasons, but a good teacher. Overall it was just the cont. theme of disorder throughout the class that frustrated me. To be fair this was not totally her fault the course was designed without the student in mind. The heavy workload was spread between several different sources from blackboard to insite. Keep up
Professor Hill is a wonderful teacher. Her class is an easy breeze if you go to class (like you're supposed to), if you do the homework (like you're supposed to), and if you hit deadlines (again like you're supposed to). The class is based on the mutual respect of you and the teacher. As long as you don't waste her or your time, you will get along.
Excellent, friendly and clear in her instructions. Answers any questions quickly and is on point in her responses. The class itself is half classroom and half online so pay attention and you'll get a grasp on it easily enough. Grading style is very fair and extremely clear but listen to what she says and do whats asked in feedback & you'll be fine
is an amazing professor, she is very clear when explaining her class. I loved her class it is very easy to follow.
She'll work with anybody willing to make the effort. Really enjoyed the class.
I had Prof. Hill for my first semester of English and took her again for English II in a summer course. Just as amazing as the first time. The whole class is based on mutual respect so as long as you show up, listen and put your full effort into your papers and work, she will notice and grade you what you deserve. Also improved my writing 10 fold.
Have to volunteer as part of class or counts for 5% off total grade. Had chapter quizzes due two days after class started. Offers one single extra credit assignment. Informed her that I go by my middle name, and was told she "can't keep track of name changes" because she has "too many students"? Not sure how every other teacher does it then.
People who don't do the work don't do well, but that's how it should work, right? Slackers tend to complain but if you do the work you really learn and earn a good grade.
Proffessor Hill is a good instructor but strict. If you attend class everyday, you should be fine. Gives quizzes over chapters and she lets you know beforehand (sometimes). Quizzes can only be taken in class with a password she gives out. 3 essays and 1 presentation. Offers extra credit. Could easily make a A or B.
She is a British professor with the best accent, knows her stuff, and will always help out when it comes to creating essays.
Professor Hill is AMAZING! I was nervous at first because there is a lot of work. Yet, she breaks it down very well into many small assignments that lead up to the larger ones. She is pretty straight forward, but I think it's great because you know exactly what it expected. She is very helpful & wants to see students become better at writing.
Professor Hill is not only a great teacher, but she is understanding and will help you with anything you are having trouble with! She is on your side and wants you to be successful! Such a nice person and worked with the class through difficulties!
This class stressed me out, however it wasn't the professor. Apparently, all 1302 English classes are set up this way. She is fair. If you are willing to do the work, then she will help you. I disliked that 10 hours of community service was part of my grade but if it wasn't then it would most likely have been another writing assignment.
she graded hard and she is not nice though. she is not will to help too!:((((
She's awesome--really helpful, especially at the end of the semester!
I attended the maymester so it was very fast-paced. Even so Prof. Hill was always available if a situation needed to be addressed, she seemed to care about the work you submitted and offered feedback. I would take her class again.
I took her for maymester, and boy did it go buy really fast! There were 3 essays due (3-5 pages long). It was almost like pulling teeth with her when it came to essays, and knowing EXACTLY what she wanted to see on the paper. But gives good feedback on "rough drafts" and i would take her again! Overall, you really have to work for your grade.
Not the best teacher to take for a short term class online. She gives quizzes and three essays which she doesn't display ahead of time. If you want an easy grade then she's not your teacher, you're better off with someone else.
Avoid taking her for a short term course if you can. She does not provide any help nor does she garde anything until the end of the course, and her grading is terrible, how are you going to take so long and give bad grades when you give so little time to work on an assignment. I regret taking her
I thoroughly enjoyed Professor Hill, very spunky lady. THIS IS A WRITING COURSE. YOU WILL BE WRITING A LOT. If you miss class, you will miss assignments and points. She gives really good feedback and grades on your improvement. I got an easy A in the class but I enjoy writing. Very clear HW schedule. She works with you if you're trying.
Although she may come off strict at first with a couple of quizzes to start the course, Professor Hill is terrific! She is willing to help anyone get an A on all assignments and she gives a lot of homework that leads towards the major assignments. She is a tough grader, but she cares about her students and is always available for questions!
This class starts off tough, especially for a summer course. Be prepared to read and take quizzes (don't let grades discourage you). Classes seems impossible, but I made an A. 3 major essays and a timed final essay. Only thing I did not enjoy was group discussions. Make effort and you will be fine. There is a chance for extra credit.
Her class was tough, but I definitely learned a lot. I would say she is a tough grader. Don't expect to get B's or higher by just doing minimum requirement. I worked hard on my paper, got very positive feedback from classmates, and still got D on my paper. I would avoid summer course, since she can't give you much feedback or respond to you.
THIS IS MY SECOND TIME TAKING THIS CLASS AND I WILL BE HONEST. IT'S TOUGH!!! I AM GLAD TO SEE OTHER PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME ISSUES AS MYSELF BUT AFTER BEING IN HER CLASS AND TALKING TO HER I SEE THAT SHE IS A GOOD PERSON. I THINK SHE GOES THROUGH THE PROCESS OF ELIMINATION AT THE BEGINING OF THE SEMESTER TO ONLY DEAL WITH THE SERIOUS PEOPLE
I'm currently taking Professor May's online class. SHE DOES NOT REPLY TO EMAILS QUICKLY. It's an online class and she sometimes takes up to a week to respond or doesn't at all. Awful class. Take another professor.
Terrible Professor. Sometimes she's nice other times she's completely rude. Doesn't give good feedback unless your one of her favorites, which there are very few. Lot's of homework, sometimes she takes homework grades for being in class just to hurt those who aren't.. I have some zeros for things I never even heard her assign. Waste of time.
She was my hardest professor EVER. You basically learn by yourself when taking her class. She gives you a lot of homework that don't teach you at all. Also, she is a extremely tough grader. You better give your blood to get an A with her. I'LL NEVER TAKE A COURSE WITH HER AGAIN AND NEVER RECOMMEND IT TO MY FRIENDS.
Took professor May's English class online. She is a great teacher and grades fairly, due dates are clear and assignments are specific. Not a ton of work a week, only 4 major essays due throughout the whole semester.
Took the online course in winter session and it was the most confusing layout I've ever dealt with and caused me to miss many assignments. Poor instructions and really hard grader which made it hard to even come close to making a good grade.
If English 1302 is required as one of your classes I advise you to CHOOSE ANOTHER PROFESSOR . She grades far to hard and left me no choice but to have to drop her class. I understand the difference between a good teacher and a bad one . This professor doesn't give good feedback you have to figure out on your own what you did wrong !
This was honestly one of the best classes I have taken. I learned so much, I have to say I was extremely nervous because she can be really intimating. She will help you if you simply ask. I recommend this class to anyone that actually wants to learn and is willing to put in the effort.
She treats this class as if your were going to become a journalist. She cancels class a lot and gives homework to be completed to make it up. The assignments are difficult because she doesn't fully explain it and when students ask for help she shuts them down and makes everyone feel bad about their writing.
Return emails are very vague, and she answers only part of the questions. Does not grade papers in a timely manor, and the instructions to the assignments are also vague. There is little to no feedback on your papers, just a grade. If you get a comment, your lucky. Therefore, you have no clue on what needs to be improved on. Do Not take her!!!
At the beginning of the semester, Professor May can be a bit rude and uncaring. Near the middle to the end of the semester, she opens up a bit and becomes a lot nicer. She is a tough grader, but really helps you focus on what you need to work on for your papers. The papers are interesting to write, I enjoyed writing them and picking my topic.
I loved being in this class. You have about a month for each major paper. As long as you follow the rubric, do the peer reviews, and go to your conference with her, you will be fine. I think she has a bad rating because people are lazy and want an easy A. You will have to work, but she will help make you a great writer. Worth it. Loved his class!
I went to meet her during office hours and she did not care. I left her office in tears as she continued to interrupt me and talk towards me in a very condescending manner. She takes forever to grade and only half responds to emails. I am a junior and have never ever gotten a lower than a B, I am failing this class, save your GPA don't take her.
Has no respect to her students input. Blames you for not learning how to write so not much help as a teacher. Teachers usually show a little empathy because we are still learning but she doesn't have any and doesn't care. Expects her students to write essays for the New York Times. Please don't take her.
Her last minute absences (4 or 5 of them) and deadlines that weren't adjusted even though we were cheated a day of instruction weren't fun, especially since only due dates on her syllabus are for final essays and she'd give us (in like a pop quiz way) a week to write a first draft. Gives good feedback though! British dry/mean humor so be prepared.
She contradicts herself and is very unclear about assignments. She is very strict about time and will lock you out if you are a minute late. She lacks understanding and empathy.
I took this class during Wintermester Online and although it was tough, it was a great experience. She is clear on what she expects on assignments and responds within the time frame in her syllabus. If you do not read the material required, you will not pass. You must work for your grade in this class.
On of my best professors! Very easy to approach and gives great feedback on essay drafts. I felt challenged by this professor, which I really appreciated. I would absolutely recommend this professor!
Professor May pushes us to do important things and guides us all the way through. If you don't like that in a teacher, take someone else.
Professor May is one of the best professors I have had at Brookhaven so far. She strives to inspire her students and succeeds. I learned so much and catch myself correcting myself with what she has taught me. I recommend her class. One of the best college experiences you will have.
Tougher grader than some but will work with you on just about anything. Responds to emails quickly which is always nice.
Professor May is one of those teachers you will never forget, along with the wealth of knowledge and inspiration she gives freely. It's a well structured class with clear expectations. She will work with you to make sure your essays are ready before the due date. She's hilarious, personable, and caring. You will be a better writer after this class.
I really loved taking this class over the summer. The syllabus was very clear and concise. The due dates are strict but she warns you in the syllabus. The assignments and homework were not difficult. Dedicate the required time for a normal core class and you'll be okay.
Professor May gives options for extra credit throughout the course. Team work was mandatory, but none of my team was responsive -- she set up a new team for people who were having the same trouble. Takes a while to get a grade back on an essay, but she's a fair grader and online class was presented well.
I took this class during Summer (1) it was very challenging for me due to it being an online class. If you read the chapters and do the assignments on time you will pass. Ms. May is a great professor and made sure her students was aware of their course work.
Instructions are not clear. Emails are never returned. Tough grader without feedback so it's hard to improve your writing from your rough draft to final draft. Slow grader. Assignment turned in took at least a month to grade. Instructions on syllabus do not match up with the instructions on specific assignments. Never take her classes.
I signed up for the professor's fast-paced on-line class based on positive reviews of her. However, perhaps due to a heavy workload she seemed disorganized. The students had to prompt her to post assignments. She did not timely grade assignments.
Really helpful !
Professor May was so understanding with everything happening.. way better than the rest if my professors and it really helped me with the rest if this semester!
Assignments are perfectly organised with proper instructions. She always help with the instructions before assignments. Her grading method is clean and clear. She always gives time to work on assignments and if you submit on time you are surely going to get good grade.
Professor May was amazing and patient especially with covid-19 she worked me and did such amazing job at communicating with me Im grateful and wish more professors were like her!!
Makes you use one of the worst programs out there and pushes you way to fast. I would not take her again if I had to take her or drop out of college
Professor May is a difficult person to deal with. She is very short, harsh, and has no problem talking over someone. She isn' understanding or patient when a student is confused. She also gives no feedback on essays so it is hard to improve. I would only take this class again because I need the credit but she makes life way harder than it has to be
Her instructions for assignments/projects can be vague so don't overthink it; just follow the instructions/rubric to a T, ask questions when you have them, and you'll get an A. There's a lot of reading but the material was insightful. Your final grade is based on 3 projects and multiple small assignments.
Make sure to read the assigned reading; you won't pass if you don't. You'll also be doing a lot of scholarly research so be prepared to read complex publishings. Totally doable, but you have to be committed. She was also SUPER forgiving with due dates when the whole covid pandemic hit and she even gave us extra credit opportunities.
Professor May has been by far the worse English professor I have had in all my school years. She is not attentive, very short responsive, grades a week after the class is over, does not give specific feedback on assignments, does not respond to emails, cancels office hours often (on days you need her most, she cancels). I don't recommend the class!
I am usually an A/B student and love school but being in her class was the worst thing I have ever done. Her class is made up of 3 big papers and it was doable but she gave me a bad grade and I genuinely believed I did good! She takes forever to respond emails and doesnt give feedback on work. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!! There goes UT for me
I would have to say this has to be the worst English professor because she does not give any feedbacks and just grades your paper the way she wants but when you email and ask about your grades , she does not answer them which I think it seems to be disrespectful
Professor May really cares about her students & wanting them to succeed! I have been going through family issues for almost 2 weeks now & I missed a few assignments, I couldnt focus & she helped me out a way to pass the class. Im beyond blessed. She is very understanding of what youre going through in your personal life & I admire her for that.
When asked for help or feedback on certain assignments it was swept under the rug and was very rude.
Professor May was a one in a kind teacher. She seeks improvement in her students. I had never had a professor who would read our rough drafts and give us such invaluable feedback. I have gained more knowledge here than in any language class. I am confident in applying what I have learned beyond college. Thank you, Professor May.
Honestly, I'm surprised with all the negative reviews. Professor May has always been caring and willing to answer any questions I needed help with. Yeah, there is going to be a fair amount of reading and writing, but it IS college English. I'm really glad I took this class and grateful for her help. Attend class, do your work, and you'll be fine.
She is a very good professor. Very understanding about taking late work if you have a valid excuse. She is also very good at feedback. Just do your work and join most classes :)
The course load is manageable, and Professor May gives plenty of time to do work and provides feedback in order to improve grades. She is very understanding about taking late work. The only thing is to do the work and try to attend the class in person if possible, if not Professor May is very good about helping online students and easy to contact.
Best professor I have ever had, very caring and is always willing to help you.
Make sure to ask questions!
I was taking 8 classes (5 college and 3 high school), and so getting classwork submitted on time got difficult sometimes. Despite this, she was incredibly flexible with me and my schedule. Also, she was always willing to answer any questions and give critiques on my essay that were very helpful. I have no cons and no issues with her.
Her class is easy, but I didn't expect to get a B.. probably my fault since I didn't put a lot of effort into class. There were about 3 essays to write. She accepts late work without an explanation, which was very kind. I missed some assignments because the layout was a bit tricky for me, but again, I didn't put in a lot of effort. I recommend her.
overall I loved her class she amazing! But I do know something you may ask as much as questions you need she is there to help you understand English was one of hardest subject since high school. You may email her for help she will she gives get feedback because has hope to get you where you need to be in writing.

Professor May is an attentive professor and wants you to succeed in her course! She is approachable and wants to get to know you as an individual. This is a very hard trait to find in college! If more professors could be like her, we would have a very successful generation to help the world become a better place to be in! I recommend her 100%!
Professor May was an ok professor. Be ready to write! The last paper is confusing in instructions. Very easy class!
Professor May was an ok professor. Be ready to write! Instructions for the last paper are a bit confusing. Overall great class!
Great Professor. Nothing will substitute for your total commitment and dedication to the course, so be prepared to make the necessary sacrifice. I will take her class again.
I took the class over summer and received 60's on two assignments I worked tremendously hard on. I tried to be creative and use unique topics as it was encouraged… but look where that led me. I'm an A+ student and on my way to becoming valedictorian, and this grade is unfortunately going to hinder my chances of applying to the ivies. Good luck.
Professor May is an attentive and understanding instructor. She's willing to work with students and provide helpful feedback. The workload can be challenging, but using resources like Unstuck AI for study prep makes it manageable. Overall, a great class to take.
Very hard and difficult way of giving assignments. Not clear instructions. Would never ever recommend any body who has English as a second language.
Honestly the class wasn't bad it was just ALOT of essays which I hate cause im honestly tired of writing them, but other than that pretty fast paced 8-week class which why it was essay on essay, but very clear with her grading and feedback. Every week we had inquisitive test which was annoying but doable.
Prof May is great! She gives great feedback and do all she can to help you pass. Looking forward to taking her 1302 class.
I had took this class online. she is very difficult to understand. I would never ever suggest anyone to take this class.
