She hasn't taught much and it shows. Always talking down to students and insulting them in class - should be fired.
Scharie is a great prof. Teaches clearly, encourages discussion and knows how to get the class involved. Also knows a lot about the field and has had lots of experience in various areas. I think she's great! Very helpful.
pretty good teacher. same class format gets a bit dull after a while, but the material is kinda interesting. overall, not bad instructor
Nice lady - boring class. Her exams are straightfoward, pretty easy to get a good mark. Still seems new to teaching and talks down to students. Spends a lot of time doing discussion and group assignments which add nothing to the learning environment. Study for the tests and answer questions when she asks the class- she'll like you more if you do.
Scharie seems dedicated and is always fair-minded and concerned.
when i took scharie's class she did not teach, she only read off her powerpoints and at 8 in the morning that's not enough to stay awake or even show up
She is a poor instructor. Everyone gets good grades so she can get good reviews. Always talking down to those who disgarees with her politics.
Scharie often will treat her students like they are in grade 2. she uses way too many examples to get a simple point across. her assignments and tests are easy as long as you go to class..as her wuestions are right from her slides.
This lady has some serious problems. She is so boring and forces you to answer questions in class. If you are not listening to her or if you're in your own world she will stare at you every 5 seconds. Her exams are so stupid, who cares about knowing statisitcs on the exams. It is a stupid intervention class not a stats class.
She uses the same examples every class. I think she thinks that we are stupid. The questions she asks other students are not something that we have to know. I did not pay to listen to my classmates talking about "once my friend was...." who cares, thats personal information that other students don't need to know about. She should put a stop to this
I thought that Scharie's class was easy. As long as you show up, its all good. She also gives you little hints on what will be on the test. After reading the comments on this site, I thought the class was kind of dumb, but now I realized that because of discussions and such, you actually learn the stuff much better. Nice teacher and easy marker.
She gives about 40 pages worth of assignments of the semester, then made us do a presentation on the assignment and made it worth more than 3 of the papers combined, and then marked it ridiculously hard. I got 14 out of 50 bringing my grade from a 90 to a 60....Oh and this was right AFTER we did teacher evaluations. RUN RUN RUN
Had her for a crim class and a had the same thing happen to me but mine was a typo so I'm sure Yours was too. I doubt she actually giv a 14 out of 50. Mine went to a 14 out of 17 when I brought it up.
She's a hard marker when it comes to essays. I've never gotten less than a B+ on my essays in any classes that used APA or MLA and she basically failed my paper. Funny thing is for written responses on an essay I wrote less than 3 sentences and got full marks. Dumb class, lowered my mark, don't get her as a prof.
Marking was all over the place, assignments were not fairly proportionate in weight. Very hard marker and stickler in APA. Although the final was relatively straightforward and her study guide helped quite a bit.
I had her for intro to criminology and I thought she was excellent. Her notes are easy to follow and they are always on blackboard. She also gives you a midterm and final exam study guide- which was really helpful. Her assignments arent hard, and shes not a hard marker. She gives an outline of what she wants. I would definitely have her again.
Intervention strategies was very interesting. The way Scharie taught the class kept everyone engaged. Midterm & Final were very straight forward and easy. Assignments & Papers though, marking all over the place. She's super picky about APA. Over all, not bad of a class/teacher.
Pretty good class. You must be prepared to do a lot of work. Midterm/Final exams aren't too difficult, and based off of information from guest speakers, class discussions, power-point slides, and the textbook. You can't really afford to miss any classes. Be sure to double-check your APA on assignments. Scharie is also very helpful and approachable.
Honestly, this class was like living through what Sam and Frodo did on their way to Mordor. You were never sure what was going on, kept backtracking, and were facing certain death. In the end you emerge without a finger and you betray everyone close to you. Honestly, avoid at all costs unless you want to face the same fate as Sam and Frodo.
The class was boring and Could have been self taught. There was no consistency and her marking was everywhere AND she basically reminded me of megatron. End of story.
Prepare to do four papers and a group presentation. All due basically in the same month. No point in going to class, you can pass the class just by reading the slides on blackboard. Scharie is approachable, but crazy in APA. Gives a lot of extra credit opportunities too.
Her class was overall pretty easy. The only thing I really didn't like is that she talks to you like you're not very smart. As a criminal justice student I know a lot about the system. But not in her class I didn't!
Scharie is an overall good teacher. She is passionate about the crjs. This class was an easy A. It was interesting. She also set up a tour of the remand center and prison.
Scharie is a great prof overall. She marks fairly easy, and give lots of opportunity for bonus marks (I accumulated about 14% in bonus marks). The only thing thats hard about her class is her tests, they're challenging and makes you apply theories beyond what you are taught in class and the textbook (which is not a bad thing). Very recommended.
Intelligent, but talks down to her students. Her class was easy, but her presumptuous attitude toward almost everything guides my decision not to take classes with her in the future.
got an A in the class but worst teacher I ever had. talks down to students
Awesome Prof! If you do your work there is no chance you will get less than an A- in this class. She gives LOTS of opportunity for extra help and bonus grades. If your up for a challenge and wanna attain more out of a course.. HIGHLY RECOMMEND Scharie.
Awesome Prof!!
Scharie is really not a good instructor. Her lectures are dry and you can learn more from the book. She can be very moody and not approachable. Sometimes she treats us like kids and can be overly harsh. I have seen a couple of students cry after class because of things she said to them in front of everyone.
I was looking forward to this class but came away disappointed. The prof doesn't seem to have much practical experience and her examples are often made up. She seems so up and down .
Scharie is an amazing professor. She gives very clear instructions and I gained a lot from the class. She is tough with grading in regards to APA, but I found this beneficial as I gained a better understanding of APA through writing her papers and following her guides. She has a lot of interesting stories and personal experience related to lessons
She's got an attitude, so what? grow up and do your work, act interested, and you will get as much as you put in from her class. Her exams are difficult i won't lie, but the assignments even that out. Theres no reason not to get an A on her assignments, she literally will go over them before hand if you are willing to reach out!
Prof can be very rude to you. She is friendly one day and different the next. See seems to pick on you sometimes. I hope I don't have another class from her.
She can be hit or miss. I can understand why she wouldn't jive with some people, she can come across as kind of abrasive sometimes. Overall she's pretty nice though. The class was fairly easy and the lectures were tolerable, especially because of the guest speakers. Exams are long and cumulative.
Great prof. Is willing to go over assignments prior to you officially submitting them. Tests are straight forward and she provided a study guides. Class isn't just lectures she asks for students opinions and input. This made the class more enjoyable. Overall great prof if you are willing to put the work in and show up to class.
Most lectures were read out of the textbook and not very helpful. Almost every class was cut short because she would run out of things to say and teach about. You can learn everything you need by reading the textbook and powerpoints on your own time.
Dr. Tavcer's exams just come from the textbook. The written assignment was okay but her grading was really really picky.
Scharie is an average prof. She makes good use of class time and will give many opportunities for bonus grades throughout the semester. Unfortunately she seems to forget she's teaching third and fourth year students and will often teach material everyone already knows. Lectures can also get very feminist or emotional. Otherwise decently easy.
I was hoping for alot more in this class. Scharie's lectures are long and can be disorganized. The guest speakers make up for Scharie's lack of any related experience. Course had lots of potential but the prof?
we are coming to the end of the semester and the class is really just repeating earlier material. Lots of guest lectures which helps keeps things interesting but I was expecting alot more. Professor can be hot and cold
30 page group paper. Last semester and last year she gave bonus assignments, but not this semester. Last year she let students redo their prep, not this semester. Not helpful. Expectations are not very clear. Not sure what we are supposed to learn. I heard great things about this class/ prof, but I was left disappointed.
Lectures very long and repetitive, two group assignments worth 50% of your grade, either pair with a friend or prepare to work alone. Of no help explaining concepts, extremely hard marker for APA citations.
Thank God for the guest lecturers! Scharie is very limited in her own applied experience and her lectures basically come out of a textbook. Lectures are boring and seem 1st year. I still haven't figured out how an overly long term paper makes sense for the course.... also why the APA fetish focus on minor things that are penalized so harshly?
Scharie was okay as a prof. I have taken a couple of classes from her and there is a lot of overlap in what she teaches. She uses lots of guest lecturers which helps but Scharie seems more interested in converting you to her political opinions. If you feed her opinions back on assignments you are guaranteed an A.
Im not sure why Scharie makes learning so hard for so many students. I feel she wants to make a point that she is in charge and wants people to know it. There is no doubt that she plays favourites. It is a bit odd that she want to be Facebook friends with some students - I don't know any other prof at MRU that does this? Just a bit uncomfortable.
Compared to most of the other professors in the degree, Scharie isn't very good. I have taken several courses from her over the last couple of years and she she tends to teach the same stuff over and over. Her own lectures are dry and superficial so guest lecturers help. He approach to grading focuses alot on APA detail. Avoii if your can.
She does not like guys. She talks down to students forcing students to not contribute and to not show up. Skews stats to prove her point instead of teaching us the realities. Not a nice person and I do not recomend taking if you are a guy!
Tough marker, you are expected to use to textbook quite heavily.
Knowledgeable, approachable, and flexible prof. She had a personal emergency this term and was very considerate in trying to ensure students had a good experience & weren't left hanging. LOTS of group projects, tough on APA, and wants specific info from class on tests and assignments (a bit nit picky, so don't miss class), but fair prof in general.
Disaster of a class. Professor seemed intent on making some students feel inferior. I will try and avois taking another class from this prof again.
There is no midterm or final in her class. In total you have 5 assignments to do. The last three of them are in groups. She is caring and down to earth. This class overall was super easy.
Most of the class had an A grade due to the given 20% for attendance. On the final assignment she marked predominantly on grammar & APA. Unrealistic & unclear expectation on a 12-20-page paper. It dropped each student down a letter grade. After, she deleted the assignment outline on Blackboard because it contradicted with her grading. RED FLAGS!
Wouldn't suggest taking if you are a guy. Told a student that they could not have an opinion on a subject as they do not know what it is like to be a visible minority or a woman.
she lost my exam and would not let me make up for it even though she lost my exam. It showed very poorly to who she tries to act like because the whole class was about having empathy and compassion and she did not show any of it for my circumstance. I am glad I was able to see her real colours and not the fake person she tries to be.
This class was basically a "how to be nice" class. There were SO MANY assignments. Material was easy, but the amount of things due in this class was ridiculous, for which a cumulative final worth 30% didn't make sense at all. Overall easy peasy tho, everyone I know finished with an A or A plus
I was told to not take her as I am a male but thought that seemed like a really weird way to choose a professor BUT I should have listened. I'm a feminist but this lady is something else... She literally told a student that he couldn't speak on an issue because he didn't understand because he wasn't a female. I guess sympathy doesn't exist.
Scharie is a phenomenal prof. She is one of the crjs profs at mru that everyone likes, and if you don't you're a rare breed. She marks assignments very generously, and as long as you actually try, it isn't hard to get full marks. She is very understanding and does her best to help her students succeed. She's the goat tbh
LOVE SCHARIE, AMAZING PROF!!!!!! her classes are EASY A's, and you also learn a TON. she is the nicest human alive, amazing prof, cares about students and has amazing connections. 10/10/10/10. you won't regret taking her classes, she is by far one of the best crjs profs there is.
Scharie may give lots of assignments but shes an easy marker and very approachable and kind.
Scharie is an incredible professor. I've had her for several courses during my academic career. She's a hard marker and grammar matters, but she teaches relevant course material really well, and brings in numerous guest lecturers to teach on subject matter related to assignments or real life applications. I highly recommend.
Although attendance isn't mandatory, you should attend as there is no textbook and her lecture slides don't tell you much. She's a very fair and easy marker when it comes to the Q&As as well as the final assignment. Some of the content can seem a bit repetitive and boring but the guest speakers are interesting. Final was online and open book
I really enjoyed Scharie as a professor and I recommend anyone to take her atleast once through your degree. Get the textbook and go to lectures and you will be successful. She always answered my emails when needed and gave good feedback.
Good professor overall but online lectures are dry. She has her own textbook so make sure to read it. Straight forward marker with fairly simple assignments. Will bring in interesting guest speakers. Final was online and open book which made it easier but a long exam
Her and Anita Chiang did not make the test the same for everyone, meaning that everyone got graded extremely differently (some were given easy exam questions, while others got the difficult ones). Their way of testing students' knowledge is unfair and problematic for students, as some can get tested on easy topics, while others get the hard ones.
Shes really nice and lectures well. Takes time to learn your name and takes a lot of feedback from students throughout the semester.
I really liked having Scharie as a teacher, we were only graded on a few things and they were all easy enough as long as you did the work.
I don't recommend taking her classes unless your views align with hers. She seems to add her opinions instead of teaching relevant course material. The class overall was very easy and we didn't have an exam until the final. The final was BRUTAL she did not prepare us with lectures and the study guide didn't outline what was actually on the final.
I highly recommend taking this class with this professor if you can. You'll do well on the assignments and final as long as you attend lectures. Although a textbook is required you could still probably go without it
Great Prof! Every assignment we did can be done in groups and online. She goes through slides throughly yet we were never behind in class. Not very much lecture to study for on the test. Was overall an interesting class and she brings in guest speakers. I would take this class again.
If you do the readings you'll be able to engage in class and it'll be a lot less boring and awkward for everyone. She's really honest about her views on the justice system and I suppose a lot of people who took her class were no prepared to hear the reality of it. The issue was the exam, the study guide did not reflect what was gonna on it at all.
Takes days to reply to emails. Her feedback (if any) doesn't make sense and her expectations are very vague. Whenever I asked about her feedback on my assignments, Scharie corrected my grades from B to A because her feedback did not correlate with what I wrote. No textbook so I had to teach myself. This class felt like a waste of my time and money.
Gives 0 feedback for assignments unless you make a meeting with her but is a tough grader, very rude and dismissive when asking for clarity. She brought in guest speakers who encouraged us to insert ourselves into dangerous situations (like hugging unhoused people in downtown) without considering the danger that can pose to untrained students.
The most inconsistent and harsh grader, with little relevant feedback. If you don't attend class, you are not going to pass. Lecture slides contain no information, informally requiring attendance. Uses guest speakers to fill in her lack of knowledge and pushes her ideologies rather than content. Does not respond timely and is just quite rude.
Scharie always in interrupted the guest speakers and would be rude to students during the guest leactures. At one point a guest leacturer had to reassure a student because Scharie didn't like what the student's perspective was. I swear she made our guest speakers uncomfortable and some probably won't be coming back.
Scharie is really sweet but isn't very caring. She is a very hard marker and does not give good feedback. Her final is worth 40% and is 200+ questions. She expects us to know a bunch of content that was never taught nor in the sides. But wait...a textbook you ask. NO BECUASE SHE DOES'T HAVE ONE. You are required to teach youself everything.
Her final is out of 256. In the past, she has had the final online or open book, so why not this time? A textbook would have helped so much in this class. She puts one word on each slide so people come to class, but how fast can I type during her lecture? And it is impossible to remember every piece of info in a 3-hour lecture without taking notes.
I am seriously so frustrated and its not just me, its a collective opinion from most people in this course. She marks okay - but little to no feedback. She'll put a line through half the sentence when shes grading, and leave no comment, which does not help with fixing that mistake for next time.
She is unclear in marking and gives no feedback. Dont even get me started on how the guest speaker was telling us to approach homeless people... Also, dont know if anyone had her for any other class but, just so you know, she's never brought in a POC guest speaker. Speaks for itself. I'd rather take quant again than another class with her.
She is rude and unapproachable. She talks about the guy that liked her in corrections soooo much. I have never met a CRJS prof like her. May this kind of teaching/grading never find me again.
She was such a caring professor, with great class discussion, I can confidently say that all those negative comments below are not true with the way she ran her lectures and class material. Would 100% take again
A lot of inconsistencies. Ie) Cancelled the first class, graded the first assignment with feedback “refer to first lecture” (lecture has 1 word, and no content to pull for the assignment). She seemed annoyed when asking for feedback on assignments, and only lined out sections of assignments with no comments. No textbook, and poorly structured class
I can confidently say all those bad reviews are true. Scharie had a million of assignments worth of 3-5% and a final of 256 points. Good luck studying because there's no textbook. Don't try to email her, she takes DAYS to reply. Also gets mad if you ask for ACTUAL feedback. She is rude and unprofessional and will be your worst mistake EVER trust me
Scharie emphasizes the importance of mental health and inclusion, but shows a lack of respect for students. Second class I've taken with her - despite learning what her standards are like, she marks inconsistently even when instructions are followed. Has a dismissive attitude when students seek clarification or assistance.
She is the most inconsistent marker and gives maybe two sentences of feedback if you're lucky, instead just crosses out entire paragraphs and leaves you guessing. 9 "tiny" assignments to leave you with a whopping final. THAT SHE WAS NOT PREPARED FOR. If your final is going to be 256 points, have enough booklets for everyone. Prepare to be dummied!
She is by far the worse professor here at MRU. Don't bother taking anything with her unless you want to have no future. So inconsistent, never prepared and continues to put you down. Be prepared to fail the final of 256 questions with no textbook or her lack of professionalism. I hope the school reevaluates her. Shame on MRU
Class is overall....subpar. During one of the guest presentations, she made the speaker very uncomfortable by talking about how "people in their (the guests) position of power are the ones to make decisions about women's body." This clearly made the guest speaker very uncomfortable, claiming afterwards that it was a joke.
Scharie didn't like me because I always asked for more elaborative feedback, sent her emails about her assignments, called her out when she made mistakes while grading. I had an A going into the final and after she graded my exam and I ended up with an A- she went back and regraded because she found one more error and I ended up with a B+. 79.4%
Unclear grading and often makes mistakes. Also unapproachable and unorganized.
All these negative reviews are accurate. This professor is more focused on pushing their personal, very woke ideologies than actually teaching the course material. Disorganized (for example, did not print enough exam booklets for the final, only realizing last minute). Unhelpful (assignment feedback is minimal). Uninterested in student success.
"I understand how stressful final exams are, and not having enough booklets certainly didn't help!" These were her own words, yet she made the final worth 40% of our grade, totaling 256 points, with 19 short-answer questions worth 100 marks. Excessive and poorly planned.
Instructed us to focus on memorizing definitions as if they would appear on the written part of the exam, which ended up being entirely scenario-based. To make matters worse, only a few of these concepts even showed up in the MC section. Misalignment between her guidance and the actual exam format was both misleading and unfair as many would agree.
Future students, take these reviews as a serious warning!!!
Scharie is great, you get what you put into her class. Show up to class, do any required reading and approach her for help. She is very knowledgeable, but will push you and hold you accountable, so except to spend a bit more time on her class than others.
Literally the worst final I've ever taken. She makes it so hard and long for an easy content class. She's an okay teacher but I find doesn't give much help with assignments or any info on the slides. The lectures can be boring too
Honestly I didn't find Scharie to be a bad professor. I felt like she graded extremely easy, and while the final was quite long, if you attended class you should have done well on it. I did find this class to be confusing. I don't know why being able to recite schizophrenia symptoms is particularly useful. I think the class could have been better
If she doesn't like you, you will know through her pettiness in her marking on assignments that are worth only 10% of our grade. I despise the way that she formats her final. There are no tests throughout the semester, but then her final is cumulative, 25 written responses (127 points) and 110 multiple choice, and she refuses to provide a guideline
I don't really understand what the bad reviews are about. The final exam is definitely complicated and long but she's a really easy marker. As long as you do well on the assignments and midterm which are very easy you don't have to put that much effort in the final to pass with an A. She's honestly a good professor and I love her marking style.
