Really cares about students. Super helpful and makes sure everyone understands work. class isn't mandatory, if you want to be there you will show up. not too much homework. test are down to the point. i am terrible at math and passed with a B.
I'm not sure how he makes math lectures interesting, but he does. Best math teacher ever! You WILL learn in this class.
Professor Childress was the BEST stats teacher ever Take him if you really want to learn but be prepared to work Homework is a must... Quizzes are timed so be prepared... Exams are not bad... The only drawback is that there aren''t any extra credit opportunities... I love Professor Childress and recommend him to everyone.
He makes sure everyone in the class understands the lecture.
Such an easy class! He bonds with his students in class's is and is super helpful he gives a lot of examples to make sure everyone understands and is always available during his office hours. Prepares you for upcoming tests and rarely misses class probably once. Recommend him to everyone. HW is a lot but meant for you to get lots of practice !:)
Such a great teacher!! Nothing bad to say about him. He gave a lot of hw but it helped in the long run. Tests were pretty average difficulty but you have to study pretty hard if you aren't too good at math. He's always willing to help and even offered extra office hours!
Highly recomend! I actually understood geometry WOW! lots of homework though but it helps with exams and quizes. I took him over the summer and it was do-able with another class.
Dr. Childress is an amazing professor. He'll stay with you after class for hours to help if you're not understand the material. I've never been good at algebra and guided me through it. If he is teaching the math you need, and the class isn't already filled up, you should add his class instantly; even if it is an early or late class.
Took class in winter. If it wasn't for Dr. Childress' willingness to help for sometimes hours after class, I wouldn't have passed his class. The man will help you until you finally understand. Group sessions during office hours were great. Prove to him that you're trying your best to pass, and he will do whatever he can to make sure you do.
Amazing professor. GIVES TONS OF homework. but totally worth it. Makes the lectures interesting and the semester goes by so fast. HE loves to joke but when things are serious he's on point.
To those of you who have not been able to pass your math classes, let me tell you, TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! I failed my Math 50 class with two other professors 4 times. I took Math 50 in the Spring and I passed my class! He teaches in such a way that you really get to understand the concept. He is by far the best Math Professor in Mt. Sac.
Childress is amazing and if you struggle with math, take him! Expectations are very clear. HW every week due the following week, gives pop quizzes but more for attendance sake, gives full credit if you show up for it. Be ready to study hard because the sheer amount of concepts alone is hard, but he will help you and gives as much credit as possible
This teacher is one of the best teacher's in the math department. He grades fair and gives partial credit for all problems if you can set the problem up correctly. You get full credit on his quizzes just as long as you attend, he uses the quizzes for you too see how you are in the class. He is smart and explains everything so you understand all.
The best math professor or even teacher I've ever had. He gives lots of examples in class and is very open to questions. He'll work with you until you understand. The lectures could get long but it definitely helped! HW isn't bad if you do it ahead of time. He's always willing to help during office hours and beyond. I wish I had taken the help!
He's a genius but so humble and explains everything to the tee! Doesn't make you feel stupid so you feel encouraged to ask questions, especially if you hated math like me. Do the homework and study, he makes you work for the grade it's math, duh. One of the best professors I've had :)
Professor Scot is the best math teacher I had ever, he explains everything clearly and he can make all math lectures easy to understand. Not a lot of homework, and you can find textbook in library. He doesn't take attendance but you will miss a lot if you skip class. Notes is very important and review them before you take the quiz and test!!
Scot is a great math teacher and he can explain everything clearly and easy to understand. He does't take roll but you better go every class or you will loss a lot. Homework everyday but not a lot and easy to do if you take notes. He has a lot of notes and useful. His quiz and exams are also not that hard if you review and he gives curve
he is an amazing teacher. he gives lots of homework but it worth it. I truly enjoyed his class.
I didn't find any ratings for his 180 and 181 classes. So initially, i thought this would be a bad experience. WRONG! Dr. Childress is an amazing professor. Explains his lessons with such clarity and finesse. Exams and quizzes will make you think a little bit, but it's all for the sake of preparing us for real world math. He's a must take!
Took 181 with him. He lectures fairly quicks, and makes some minor mistakes atleast twice a lectures. Certain topics, he made a bit too complicated. Overall, his quizes are easy, exams are medium difficulty. He is inspiring by providing great examples of real life math application.
honestly I think he is a great person but he's grading sucks! he DOES NOT give out ANY EXTRA CREDITS, he simply does not understand the fact that for struggling students, ec helps a lot, it is not that we are lazy or stupid, but we need time to digest what he is talking in class and we do get nervous in tests and quiz!!!!
I'm writing this prior getting my final grade in the class. Honestly, Professor Scot is great lecturer and awesome professor. Chill, charismatic, cool (in my opinion). He provides a vast amount of example during lecture and is willing to clarify anything if you need it. IDK why students have reviewed him "bad". PUT EFFORT A+
Lectures can be kind of long sometimes, he certainly doesn't waste any class time. No extra credit what so ever. 3 exams and 1 final. I enjoyed his class, and will most likely take him again.
I took his Math 150 on Fall 2016, He is the best professor ever, just read your notes and do the homework on time, and read the handout very carefully which he will give it to you. and ask him if you somewhere got stuck. I promise You'll get an A.
A great instructor! I am horrible at math and he truly went into depth with everything he taught and I understood it. The only reason I got a low grade was because I am an awful test taker and tend to forget a lot. Be ready to study though so it stick in your mind. Also lots of homework that's time consuming. But overall good!
He was patient and teachers in a clear and logical way. He was super nice and always return your email to answer my questions. I would not say his class is easy, but hey, it's 181, which means you gotta work for it. Exams and quizes would not be intentionally difficult, and mainly from his lecture notes and hw. Love the 25 points extra credits.
Loved this professor. He teaches very clear and shows that he cares about the students understanding the topics. He assigns homework every class to help you keep up and understand things but it helps SO much. He doesn't teach off PowerPoint which is also another plus. I think math shouldn't be taught off PowerPoint. But overall really great!
He teach fast , after he finished writing a problem , he will go on for the next one . He won't give a moment to let student think . Homework amount are decent but quizz and exams are hard. He like to combine few concepts into one problem and make it a hard question. Also you can't predict what will be on the test cauee some are never cover in cla
Take him if you don't care about your grade , don't take him if you don't like to feel stress
The test are extreme hard
He will mention something in class once, not put it on the homework, then put it on the exam. Exams are cumulative and he reaches into barely talked about material from previous chapters for exam questions.
the tests are extreme hard, if you like to learn take him, but if you only use it for transfer, take someone else.
if you like to learn you should take him but if you need better grade to transfer , it will ruin your grade
He likes to relate math with physics, if you like to learn lots of physics(math) and do lots of long work question on the test, then take him, if you don't want to due with lots of stress then don't take him.
Quiz's were 30 minutes (felt very short for some of the questions asked). Exams were long and sometimes very hard. Nice guy that seemed to make things harder than it should've been. When in class, I didn't pay attention to concepts because I was busy taking notes. Night class and he takes attendance on Halloween. No Extra credit. Lots of HW.
Extremely hard tests. Pretty everyone dropped the class.
Amazing Lectures. Hard tests, but reasonable. Do your homework/study and you're be fine. Lots of extra credit for attendance.
prof childress is one of the best professors here at mt sac. the tests were challenging, but fair. book is online. overall, he's a very inspiring professor (he really knows the material and gives analogies to simplify difficult concepts). an all-around cool guy. loves cats
Good teaching, but doesnt relate much to his tests. Heavy physics material
I got A on both 180 and 181, and I was confident about getting a good grade in his class as well, but I recently find out that it is hard to get an A in his class no matter how hard you study. I spend 24 hours in tamrc each week, I go over every single question before the test, and I can't get 90% or above.
Dr. C is one of the best math professors you can take at mt sac. He's not easy and you're going to have to work for your grade, but his lectures are very clear and through. If you have any questions he is very open whenever he's in his office you're welcome to stop by ask for help or hang out with him. Very cool dude, try him you won't regret it.
He has a great caring personality the class itself was pretty difficult probably due to taking it in the short term. we covered everything but werent tested on the last chapter because he didnt see it being fair to test us on something the very next day since we were a bit behind. i would definitely take him again. He loves Programming and linux.
I really enjoy this this professor, you can tell he takes his time to create his lectures, he offers a welcoming learning environment however because he gives it so much effort he expects the same. Easily understandable lectures. Extra complicated tests to test your actual knowledge on the subject. NO EXTRA CREDIT
I really enjoyed his class because he makes the subject easily understandable. He makes the lectures entertaining with a good laugh and great energy, and if you go to office hours he's fun to talk to. Also, the packets he gives out for notes are super helpful. If you want to learn, take his class
Professor Childress has to be the most passionate and helpful teacher. I went to his office hours regularly and it helped tremendously. He is very honest, fair, and loves what he does and shows it through his teaching. It is not an easy class but he will take notice to the students who work hard and show an eagerness to learn.
He's the only teacher I've taken that could teach me multivariable calculus. Each class, we filled out packets of notes he had pre-made--so there's not really an excuse not know what to study because his tests and quizzes pretty much exactly resembled the example problems on the packet. He even says "I would give something like this on a test."
Amazing lectures, very good teaching method, and great in-depth explications of the harder material.
He is a very good professor. Lectures are very clear. He prepares note for students. All quizzes and exams are announced and scheduled in the syllabus in the beginning of class. Great explanations for material. He gives hw but you dont have to turn in. Suggest to go to class every day because you dont wanna miss his teaching.
I had him for CSCI 190 during the winter. He made the content really fun to learn and taught everything with a lot of detail. He gave a lot of homework, but that probably has more to do with the fact that I was taking the class during intercession. His tests aren't that hard, but they are very detailed so make sure to read the questions carefully.
Professor Childress is an amazing professor overall. He's clear in his lectures and is sure to elaborate on any unclear topics. His tests can be difficult so you have to study and go to class!
such a great teacher and cares so much about his students !! tests arent hard just turn in all homework
I LOVE HIM! He goes slow and makes sure everyone understands! I really appreaciate his way of teaching
His lectures are great, gives you the notes, much to cover, is very caring when you ask questions, Allows you to use notes or talk to anyone for pop quizzes, tests are difficult but based off of notes, if you show work but get the answer wrong, he still gives credit, gives tests back and posts keys online, homework is a lot but manageable
Great professor if you really understand math. The lectures were really heavy and hard to keep up with. Started with a full class and about 15 dropped. Lets you use notes and talk to others only during quizzes. Gave no study guide for exams. LOTS OF HOMEWORK so make sure you give yourself enough time to do it.
Professor Childress is a great professor who explains the material in depth. He always answered my emails and he will help you with problems after class even if it's not technically office hours. His tests and quizzes can be a little difficult, but he will never ask anything that wasn't in the notes. I highly recommend taking his class.
I really appreciate him for remaining amazing lecture quality in this hard time. Fun guy. Crystal clear explanation. Accessible.
Before quarantine, we managed to cover ONE chapter for Exam 1. During quarantine, we somehow squished THREE chapters for Exam 2 (not joking). I understand there is a lot to cover, but not once did he consider essential workers & the amount of time we had to dedicate to school AND work.
This class was difficult and challenging and algebra and trig play a huge role in the course. However, Math 181 is the toughest math course. The good part is that it was doable. Childress is an amazing professor that explains the engineering physics and calculus concepts to prepare those who will take 4A. Be ready to work hard in his class.
Amazing professor for 290. Took him rn for winter semester. His lectures are extremely clear. Assigns hw, but doesnt collect. Use notes to study for quizzes and tests as he bases his tests off of his notes. Funny guy and overall really great professor!
Professor C is the best professor I've had yet. Class is engaging, he gives real applications for what we learn throughout the lectures, and he really cares about his students' comprehension of the coursework. Seriously a great teacher and a great guy. If you are struggling with calculus do yourself a favor and take his class.
Second semester Calculus is meant to be hard but Professor C makes sure that it is simple to understand. Make sure to go to his office hours if you're lost on a topic because he'll help a lot! The tests are fair game. Be sure to practice and put in the work. It's challenging but definitely worth it.
great professor who knows his stuff. but lots of work. do NOT take the class if you don't like lots of HW. one HW will take you 5+ hours.
I took Dr. C's 260 and 290 courses, and he is a must take (ESPECIALLY if you study math/physics). His passion for math and teaching truly helps challenge his student while simultaneously offering generous support. Super knowledgeable, amazing lectures, communicative and clear about assignments, and reasonable test. I still miss his classes!!!
He is super passionate about his teachings. He sometimes overexplains conceptual ideas, but it doesn't show up on the tests. 3 exams and one cumulated final. Practice the hw questions and ask him for clarification when needed. He is willing to help, so take advantage of his office hours!!
Very passionate about math but grading is a little odd. Tests are kind of brutal because of the way he deducts points. Overall pretty interesting class.
I took Dr. Childress in Spring 2022 and got an A. If you want your hand held through all the topics in class this is your guy. Do the hw for your own good(not graded). The CAS assignments are pretty useless other than to get familiar with wolfram alpha. If you fail this class with him, thats a reflection on you, not the professor. Its impossible.
Dr. Childress is awesome! He truly cares and loves the subject of math. He can be a tough grader, but it is only for your own good. As you advance in the class you see why he demanded for you to do the problems a certain way. He provides excellent notes and thoroughly explains how we got to the subject matter. Would def take him again!
Great professor, easy to understand the course Completion assignments are critical to understanding the unit Unless you fully understand it in class and can apply it to different questions
Great teacher. Notes are understandable, with many examples. Provide homework but it is optional for practice. Grading is understandable, gives you credit for the format and if calculated wrong still gives credit. Quiz once a week, drops 3 of the lowest quiz. 3 exams and a final, final will replace the lowest score. The final is the exam questions.
Although Math 181 is challenging, Prof. Childress provides excellent, well-organized lectures with fill-in notes that are easy to follow. Exams are tough, however, he drops the lowest with the final and overall wants you to succeed. Homework is not graded, rewarding good time management & penalizing bad habits. Overall excellent professor.
Professor Scot is an amazing mathematical teacher. I took his math 181 in the winter semester. He has a very professional knowledge of physics and mathematics!Take his class, you will not regret it!
No extra credit and have quiz, replace lowest exam by final
I would definitely be willing to take him again if possible but his classes are not easy. He is very organized and his notes are neat; his notes are very satisfying for me. He curves grades. But his exams are about 50% of the grade, quizzes are about 20% of the grade, and the final is 30% of the grade. He does not count homework points.
12 quizzes, 4 exams, one quiz every week and one exam every 4 weeks. Drops two lowest quiz scores, first quiz is based off attendance so, free points. Go to the lectures, very engaging and wants students to learn. Open to questions. Exams are kind of difficult, but allows for a notecard for cheat sheet. Overall pretty good, study.
Just do yourself a favor and do not take him. If you are not majoring in science-related fields, DONT TAKE him. In his lecture, he talks a lot of things about physics, and he deducts points very brutally on the tests and quizzes. There are no explanations of his work while he is doing examples, and it is very fast-paced.
Worst professor I have ever taken. This is the first math class I needed to drop. The class was super confusing and it felt impossible to succeed. His lectures were fill-in-the-blank and had the lowest level of difficulty compared to any quiz or exam. You weren't graded by homework so if you did poorly on exams, your grade would reflect that.
He breaks down intricate concepts into understandable parts and utilizes practical examples. Approachability and supportive engagement with students are key, as is providing regular assessments and constructive feedback. With innovative teaching methods and passions for teaching, he inspires students and leads to successful learning outcomes.
Very good prof, but goes too in depth into topics. Would recommend this prof to people who plan in majoring in physics and engineering. Lowk confusing when he deep dives into calculus theory and examples and was not needed as this is the first semester class of calc but ig it would help stem majors so makes sense.
Although I did not pass Dr. Childress's class, I do believe Dr. Childress teaches math in a way that sets you up for success. He will elaborate on concepts, details, and stuff that will benefit you as you progress into more complex math that would make me want to learn from him all math topics. HW was extra credit, 3 exams (2 exams 1 final)
Quiz and Exams are the only thing that moves your grade. Office hours are very helpful, he was a bit sassy but if you go to office hours he'll be nicer. Super knowledgeable in math, very passionate and will go off topic about certain equations but it would be cool information. Gives 40+ questions for hw every week, exams are hard but doable.
He teaches in such a thorough and caring way, however he will expect the absolute most out of you with his exams. He does offer up to 10 points of EC for every exam and a grade replacement though. Great with students and clearly cares about your success, but you will need to almost master what he has taught to do well on his exams
没吃过屎的可以试一下
This professor cares more about finishing his lectures on time than actually teaching. HW is EC and optional and does not relate to the material covered on the exams. Exams are difficult and short on time. He wants everything done his way or don't bother. There are much better teachers here at Mt SAC just take someone else.
I never wore my seatbelt while driving to this class because I wanted to die before making it to his class.
He doesn't care about his students at all. I don't know why he is so stubborn. He just wants to finish his lecture notes instead of really teaching you. There are many unnecessary questions in the homework. He may be a very good doctor of mathematics, but he is really not a good professor. Good comments are all deceiving you. Never believe them.
Probably the most organized and best communicated teacher I've had so far. Homework is extra credit and added to your exam scores. Fun class very clear he enjoys teaching it and provides a lot of applications for the material and motivation for it. very millennial core
If you can get an A in this hellish professor's class, drop out of Mtsac immediately and apply to MIT and the Nobel Prize.
You absolutely have to do the homework even though it is extra credit and not mandatory. Very very proof-intensive class, so be ready for 10 questions of that in exams. I'm convinced we missed a whole lot of other topics because he wouldn't stop lecturing us on them. It's a 3 unit class, but it really should be treated like 5 unit.
You have to follow his methods to succeed in his course, his quizzes and exams are not insane difficulty wise but the study guides are super vague, I would say take him if your not taking any other time intensive classes but be sure to ask him about specific problems to have a better idea on what he is testing on. Take if you like grinding.
The class level is difficult. No exam guides at all, he ends up putting abstract concepts or topics we barely covered on his lectures or the assigned homework and acts like we were supposed to know it even when it was skimmed over. He can be funny and a generous grader so unless you're going to spend ALL DAY studying the material take someone else.
The class was not as hard as others make it seem and his grading criteria is quite lenient. However, he spent so much time covering the first few units that we ran out of time for the last 1/3 of the class. We skipped the entirety of Chapter 5 and 7, and only got through half of Chapter 6 (so yes, we did not even get to eigenvalues/eigenvectors).
Dr. Childress is a great professor he's good at visualizing and helping you understand a lot of the concepts of Calc 2. Is his class difficult?, very. It is calc 2. The homework is extra credit but I highly recommend doing it as they go towards your exam grade. Exams are pretty hard. Take if you want a challenge or have time for hours of studying.
Could not teach at all, spend a monht on random physics. Hoemwork was aorund 8 hours eveyr week. Test was super hard and basically no curve. Doesnt matter if class average was a 50, he still doesn't curve.
If you want a good grade, DO NOT take Childress. He is terrible at explaining things and his lectures feel like he is just trying to get through the material. Exams have a ton of proofs that he expects us to just know despite never going over them or assigning them on the homework. Never curves even if the entire class is failing!
Save your own sanity and DO NOT take this class. Probably the worst math teacher/professor I have ever had. He may be a good researched and PhD, but he is DEFINITELY NOT a good math teacher.
Took Scot for Calc—he's awesome! His class is lecture-heavy, so be disciplined about Extra Credit Homework (E.C.). Exams are key (he gives partial credit), and weak algebra skills need extra study (10 hrs/week). He's clear, organized, and loves curiosity. Do all HW, redo lect. notes, & stay on top of deadlines. You'll learn a lot!
Super difficult class, Quiz once a week for attendance.
If you want a good grade DO NOT take Childress. His class is insanely hard and structured like a pure mathematics course with proofs all over the place. It's also more difficult than MATH 250B at CSUF. Take these comments however you want but your grade will thank me if you avoid him.
